Barbara , most commonly referred to by her nickname of Barb , is the queen of the Rock Trolls and Thrash 's daughter. She made her first appearance in the DreamWorks Trolls franchise as the main antagonist of Trolls World Tour where she nearly starts The Rockalypse , but reformed by the end of the film.

She never appeared in Trolls: TrollsTopia but was mentioned in the episode " TrollsTopia "; she was also seen in the supportive short series Trolls Scrapbook Stories , where not only did she went on another tour, but she now visits Poppy regularly with Debbie . She also appeared in Trolls: Holiday in Harmony as a supporting character. She also appears as a main character in Trolls Remix Rescue . Though she is absent in Trolls Band Together , she was meant to be mentioned by Poppy to Viva but the scene was cut making her completely absent from the movie. [1]

One of the early trailers showed an earlier version of Barb's model. Her teeth appeared to be like fangs in early trailers, but are more rounded in later clips and the movie itself, and her nose is shaped like an arrow head.

Barb's face is particularly unique among the Trolls. Part of the "The Sound of Silence" scene was meant to test out how she would interact with Poppy and that her assets were working. Her head was initially so large that it caused issues with her face and had to be scaled down by 10%. [2]

Barb showing her early trailer teeth

Barb is a muddy red-skinned Rock Troll with a bright red mohawk. Her left ear is missing the tip and she has a hoop earring in it; on her other ear are two earrings. She has heavy black makeup around her eyes.

Her red hue and bright hair makes her a lot more distinct from other Rock Trolls, who are mostly colored in greyish tones with either black, white, grey, dark red or blond hair. She's in fact one of the most colorful members of their Tribe. However, her colors seem a bit inconsistent, like Branch's, going between a darker pinkish red/lavender and a muddier red. Similar to Branch as well, her hair is actually short for a Troll of her size.

She has a "rocker" outfit. This includes fishnet stockings with a rip on the right knee, a torn-up white tank top, black leather bottoms, studded bracelets and a silver belt with a skull buckle.

Barb has a fairly large set of eyes compared to most other models of Trolls in the series. This makes her 3D model very expressive, and DreamWorks seems to take advantage of it. She has been showing doing some very expressive facial gestures not even seen in other Trolls thus far. She also claims that she's 1 centimeter taller than Queen Poppy (this would be a lot, since the average height of a Troll is 6 inches). Her body appears to be rather skinny for a Troll, as most are quite plump with visibly large bellies.

In TWT

A brief scrapbook appearance of Barb is seen in the story "Poppy's Rock Queen Transformation" and made a bigger role in "How To Train Your Debbie".

Personality

Queen Barb is shown to be a zealous hard rocker at heart, who loves the members of her Tribe and her music. Even though she mostly shields herself with a rough exterior, Barb actually has a softer side that she mostly expresses around the kids in her Tribe (she is seen rocking with Amp during Crazy Train ); she also cares deeply for her senile father, and her pet bat Debbie , whom she calls her "hairy little baby". Barb appears to have a more realistic perspective of friendship and believes that one can't just become best friends all of a sudden, but rather friendship takes time with mutual care and respect. But judging by how the other Rock Trolls treated her (as their queen and leader and not as a fellow Troll to befriend), it seemed that she was lonely and wanted real companionship.

Her more realistic approach to the world lets her see how the Tribes were different, which was a stark contrast to Poppy who believed everyone was the same, but she didn't see how this was positive. Instead, she saw the only way to unite the Trolls as being under one music, which she believed should be her own music: Rock. Her plans proved to be far more insidious, as she planned not only to eradicate all other kinds of music except Rock, but to turn the other Troll Tribes into "Rock zombies", using the Rock string to overwrite their true nature and force it to be dedicated to Rock. Although Barb thought her actions were righteous and for the greater good, she casually admitted her goal was basically world domination, and called it fun.

She had no qualms with threatening and attacking the other Tribes, as seen in her confrontation with King Trollex , and appeared to look down upon them and their music (such as mocking the Techno Trolls' music as "bleeps and bloops" and calling the Classical Trolls' music boring because theirs doesn't include lyrics). She especially mocked the Pop Trolls after going on a violent rant of how much she hated Pop music, thus appearing to loathe Pop the most out of all the other tribes. This is likely due to the ancient Pop Trolls being responsible for the Tribes living apart and isolated from each other. Barb didn't seem to realize, or perhaps she just didn't care, that her motives and her methods to destroy all the other Tribes' music so that all are united under Rock is basically the same thing the ancient Pop Trolls did, which made her a hypocrite, if not a worst villain due to converting Trolls into Rock zombies.

Barb displayed a twisted cruelty when she tossed the guitar holding the Strings to Rock-zombified Poppy so she would be the one who converted King Peppy and the Funk Twins. It backfired on her, as Poppy had avoided the brainwashing of the Ultimate Power Chord. Barb's constant victories during the Trolls World Tour made her arrogant and overconfident; she was so sure of her victory that didn't perceive this as a bad idea to begin with when she tossed Poppy the guitar.

Although she threw blame onto Poppy for destroying all music, Barb did show remorse after realizing that the ruining of music was ultimately her fault. During Just Sing , she seemed to resist the urge to sing with the other Trolls, and as a result her heart didn't glow nor did she have her colors return until right at the end of the song, with her late entry starting the songs "Rock" section. Once she realized her mistake, she learned to accept other's company and their differences. When she finally joins into the harmony created by the 6 Tribes, she took her first step of making new friends by accepting Poppy's offer of friendship, therefore gradually becoming a happier person.

In Trolls Scrapbook Stories , it was shown that Barb had grown to regret her actions in Trolls World Tour , and was taking steps to make up for it. In Trolls: Holiday in Harmony , she is shown singing the line "I've done a lot of foolish things, That I really didn't mean" during the song Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) . It is shown she is now on good terms with everyone else and is even excited to partake in Poppy's gift swap.

Barb gives derogatory nicknames to other Trolls, and generally isn't afraid to insult them. In Trolls World Tour , she uses the following:

  • "Popsqueak/Pipsqueak" - refers to Poppy being 1 centimeter shorter than Barb herself. Poppy didn't like this, and tried to protest that she's not one.
  • "Popsicle" - another one of her degrading terms to Poppy. A play on words, she calls Poppy a "sucker", meaning she's gullible.
  • "Popcorn" - a more general mocking to Poppy.
  • "Boytoy" - this is her nickname to Rock Zombie Branch . "Boytoy" is a very degrading term, and was her worst nickname for anyone. For girls, this terms means a young girl who's sexually attractive, and thus a "toy" for male sexual desires. When referring to a man, the term refers instead to the man being a "sex toy" for older women.

Relationships

Riff is Barb's right-hand man, who generally does whatever she tells him. She calls him casual nicknames like "dude" and "man" in a typical rocker fashion. Riff is shown to fear her temper, but was also the first Rock Troll to tell her something she didn't want to hear, pointing out that her plan to make everyone look the same and like the same things would render to no one knowing that they're cool.

Tim Heitz confirmed that Barb and Riff are like brother and sister in terms of relationship (or cousins) and there is no attraction between them. [4]

Val Thundershock

In Trolls: TrollsTopia , Val Thundershock and other Rock Trolls accept their Queen's behavior as a changed person, but acknowledge her past actions though they no longer reflect their current situation. Val was also taken on her second tour during the Trolls Scrapbook Stories short " Poppy's Rock Queen Transformation ", presumably the pair are on good terms.

After she appeared in Trolls: Holiday in Harmony alongside Barb, Tim Heitz mentioned that Val was one of Barb's "besties". [4]

Other Rock Trolls

Although mostly a callous Troll, Barb does have a soft spot particularly to the kids form her tribe as they admire her as a queen. This unfortunately doesn't change the fact that she has generally little to no friends, despite claiming otherwise and citing Carol as one. The Rock Trolls seem to show little interest in their Queen herself, and are more in supporting her plan to make Rock music the dominant genre. Barb herself notes to Poppy that her people often pretend to be her friends, and only tell her what she wants to hear.

Queen Poppy

Before she began her world tour, Barb used to hate the Pop Trolls for what their ancestors did in the past; therefore, she held the same grudge towards Poppy as the Pop Trolls' leader during the tour. When Poppy reached out to her to become friends through a glitter card, Barb misunderstood her friendship request and lost her temper, believing that she was making fun of her since she regarded Poppy as selfish as the ancient Pop Trolls; she immediately burned the card afterwards. She also acted condescending towards Poppy when she managed to hold her captive, particularly after she didn't live up to Barb's expectations.

When Poppy accidentally destroys all music by damaging all of the Strings, Barb shoves the entire blame onto the former, despite her own misdeeds, so that she can hide her regret of what she had wrought. However, after witnessing how Poppy has encouraged the reunification of Tribes and how she (along with the other Tribe leaders) helped everyone realize that music truly comes from within them all, Barb finally appreciates and becomes friends with Poppy.

Though she never made an appearance, she was mentioned by name in the Trolls: TrollsTopia episode " TrollsTopia ", when Poppy said "our good friend Queen Barb", indicating Poppy still considers Barb as a friend. In " Smooth Operator ", Poppy describes Barb as her "bestie x infinity +1". And though she hasn't been physically seen in the series, in Trolls Scrapbook Stories , it was said that she and Debbie visit Poppy every so often.

Barb mocks him when she first meets him as "Poppy's little boyfriend", clearly not impressed with him and was annoyed he dropped a heavy book on her. She even insults him after he's transformed into a Rock zombie, calling him a "boytoy". But it's presumed that with Barb's change of heart, they're now friends.

King Thrash

10E27 SQ750 S30 PUB F138 2K FINALR-min

Barb and her father have a good relationship, and she cares about his well-being.

The pair have a good father-daughter relationship, and Thrash apparently supported Barb's conquest of the Strings. She appeared to be quite eager to impress him by her conquest. It was also mentioned in Trolls World Tour: The Junior Novelization that she was under pressure to please her dad. Nevertheless, by the end of Trolls World Tour she accepts his advice to let everyone be what they want to be, including herself. According to DreamWorks' Twitter account, Barb is a "Daddy's Girl". [5]

Debbie is Barb's pet bat, whom she has a strong affection for. She's upset when Debbie has been dressed up by Poppy, losing her temper and throwing a violent tantrum. She moves Debbie away so that she doesn't accidentally harm her.

Skills & Abilities

She has most normal Troll abilities , as well as the abilities of her Tribe .

She's fully capable of riding a Beetle Bike upside down, though later in the ending credits of Don't Slack , when teaching Poppy how to ride one, appears to be frightened of how she drives it.

As a leader, she lived to expectations of her station as the "baddest" rocker around and lead her Tribe in the name of rock. However, unlike Poppy, she doesn't seem to be surrounded by friends she can rely on. In addition, when Riff spoke against her just before Poppy smashed the Strings she displayed issues with listening to others and ignored both Poppy and Riff as they spoke up against her, a issue that Poppy herself had only just come to the realisation moments before was important to be a good Queen.

In Trolls World Tour: The Junior Novelization , it was mentioned that she was expected to live up to expectations of her father.

Barb's intelligence is a bit above average for her Tribe, and was able to put into action her plans for world domination within a short span after becoming Queen. Her tactics for taking the Strings considered hitting the other Tribes hard, and when need be she resorted to more sneakier modes to turn things in her favor.

Her realistic approach to things means that she had mistrust towards Poppy and Trolls of other Tribes, but she understood her short comings and limits, hiring bounty hunters when she wanted Poppy dealt with specifically. Despite her intelligence in comparison to other Rock Trolls, she demonstrated that while she understands the bigger picture, her conclusions are not the best. While her source of information gathering is still not yet known, she was very well informed on other Trolls. Her only short-sightedness in this area was expecting the Pop Trolls to be a bigger threat than they actually were, and underestimating Poppy's tactifulness in avoiding from getting brainwashed. Her plan had worked so well that she got cocky about her victory, which was her undoing.

Barb is seen using a wireless, axe-shaped electric guitar that can shoot out power beams with each strum of the strings. She's seen playing this guitar with both a left-handed and a right-handed posture, making Barb ambidextrous.

She also sings. Though she's capable of going higher into upper notes, in Trolls World Tour , her voice has a dark tone with a gruff quality to it, and thus she has a tendency to favor lower ranges. This makes her vocal a contrast to Poppy with her higher vocal pitch and brighter tone.

As Queen of the Rock Trolls , it was her sworn duty to protect her music, including the red string of Rock, until she learnt music comes from inside. Due to her position, and Rock Trolls giving a lot of high status to talented bands and musicans, Barb likely holds a lot of social ranking and status among her people.

Medical Status and Issues

She's seen in Crazy Train leaping between various Fauna that the Rock Trolls are using for transport during her World Tour. She's shown to be quite agile and strong.

Physical Injuries

As noted in "Appearance", Barb is missing the tip of her left ear which is shaped like a bite mark. It is unknown currently what caused this injury.

  • " Rock You Like A Hurricane "
  • " Crazy Train "
  • " Barracuda "
  • " Just Sing "

"Barb" is short for "Barbara", as revealed within the Trolls World Tour movie when her father King Thrash said the line "its okay Barbara, just let everyone be who they want to be, including you".

Of another note worth mentioning in relationship to her name in regards to the line Guy Diamond said in Trolls World Tour "everyone was taken to Volcano Rock City by Barb and her Barbarians". Aside from the obivous intended pun on her name "Barb", both "Barbara" and "Barbarian" have the same origin from the greek word "βάρβαρος" which means "strange" or "foreign", which was used by the Greeks to refer to something or someone from a alien or foreign land which is strange compared to their own culture.

In concept art, Riff's name was "Spyke", likely to make his name match Barb's as both names would have referred to pointy objects. Since the name was changed to "Riff", the pair's naming scheme was broken as a result.

  • However, the reason of why her left ear is chipped is never explained so far.
  • Her short hair is very similar to how Branch's hair is shorter than most Trolls. According to supporting Trolls material, Branch's hair is short due to his habit of not showing his full potential. When Trolls show their full potential, their hair grows as was the case with Branch. This means Barb's "standard appearance" is likely not her fullest potential, just as is the same case for Branch.
  • In later sources for the Rainbow Trolls , it was noted that all Rainbow Trolls had hidden "True Colors" that only showed when they're reflecting their true selves. Because of this, she displays traits of this family, despite being from an entirely different Tribe. "Rainbow Trolls" are currently considered a retired family as of Trolls World Tour .
  • Barb is not the first Punk Rock-style Troll Doll design; in fact, she's one of several. In the 1980s, Dam Things produced the "Gonk Punk Rock", a Troll based on a British Punk Rocker. Russ Trolls would later produce a Punk Rocker Troll Doll in the 1990s; this particular doll is one of the most well-known dolls of the Russ Trolls era. Hasbro also produced an action Troll Doll called "Punk Troll" as part of their The Original Battle Trolls action figures lineup for Series 2.
  • In 2023, however, the DreamWorks Trolls Twitter account stated that Barb's starsign was switched to Taurus and Branch was given the Aries starsign. [7]
  • Discounting Poppy, Barb was the only Troll Leader to be mentioned from Trolls World Tour in Trolls: TrollsTopia until the episode " Troll Exchange Program ", which mentions Trollex.

Specific To...

  • Her red hair matches the color of the Rock string, which is also red.
  • In the extras video "Tourist Map", Cloud Guy calls Barb "the Queen of Darkness". This is a nod to her father's voice actor, Ozzy Osbourne , who's nicknamed "the Prince of Darkness".
  • During Just Sing , Barb was the last Troll to re-color and the only Troll whose heart didn't start glowing until right at the end of the song, when she chimes in. Upon doing so, she also not only re-embrace Rock Music but the harmony of the other Tribes' music, thus gaining a rainbow mohawk, this was followed by Poppy herself coloring up afterwards. Poppy and she were the only two Trolls to do so.

Trolls 2 Voice Cast: Who's Voicing The World Tour Characters

The main cast of Trolls World Tour

Trying to keep your kids entertained while stuck at home just became a lot easier now that DreamWorks Animation has released Trolls 2: Trolls World Tour as a digital rental the same day that it was supposed to hit theaters. Back in all that good animated and musical goodness is a voice cast including Anna Kendrick , Justin Timberlake , James Corden , and more actors and musicians than any reasonable parent can keep up with.

For the sake of my own sanity, I've put together a list of the Trolls 2: Trolls World Tour voice cast and why their voices probably sound familiar to you. And before you ask, yes, that is Ozzy Osbourne, and yes that is Mr. Christian Grey himself as the oddly adorable Chaz, the Smooth Jazz Troll. So get out your favorite Troll doll and buckle in because we're going on the wild ride that is the Trolls World Tour character (and voice actor) list.

Queen Poppy and Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick - Queen Poppy

Queen Poppy is the main protagonist is both Trolls and Trolls World Tour , in which the fearless leader of the Pop Trolls who sets out unite all the different Trolls tribes that exist outside her own. Poppy is voiced by Anna Kendrick who is best known for her work in the Pitch Perfect and Twilight franchises.

Branch and Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake - Branch

Unlike his love interest, Queen Poppy, Branch is a cautious and more grounded Pop Troll who spent much of his life mastering different survival skills before embracing song and dance with the Trolls. The character is brought to life by the singer/dancer/actor/everything Justin Timberlake, who requires no further introduction.

Biggie and James Corden

James Corden - Biggie

With a heart as large as his stature, Biggie is a tall and round blue Pop Troll who joins Poppy and Branch on their different adventures. Voiced by everyone's favorite carpool karaoke enthusiast James Corden, this lovable character is nothing but bounds and bounds of fun and joy.

Mr. Dinkles and Kevin Michael Richardson

Kevin Michael Richardson - Mr. Dinkles

You couldn't have Biggie without his best friend Mr. Dinkles, a small worm who uses a squeaky "mew" sound to communicate instead of using words. Mr. Dinkles is voiced by acclaimed voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson, whose list of credits includes shows like Samurai Jack , The Batman , and Rick And Morty to name just three of his scores of roles.

Guy Diamond and Kunal Nayyar

Kunal Nayyar - Guy Diamond

The so-called "Life Of The Party," Guy Diamond has an auto-tuned voice and is full of himself more than any other troll. With all the different trolls being introduced in Trolls World Tour , it should come as no surprise there would be a Smooth Jazz Troll by the name of Chaz. Part musician and part bounty hunter, Chaz is a character no one will be forgetting for a long time. This could be thanks to the fact that he's voiced by Jamie Dornan , aka Christian Grey.

Satin and Chenille and Icona Pop

Icona Pop - Satin And Chenille

Satin and Chenille are conjoined twins connected by their blue and pink hair. Like any good set of twins in an animated movie, Satin and Chenille can't seem to agree on anything. The twins are voiced by Icona Pop (Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt).

King Trollex and Anthony Ramos

Anthony Ramos - King Trollex

King Trollex is the leader of the Techno Trolls and looks like something out of a pixilated rave than he does a traditional troll. This high-energy neon troll is voiced by singer and actor Anthony Ramos, who you might remember from his brief appearance in A Star Is Born .

The McElroy Brothers

The McElroy Brothers - Skyscraper

Skyscraper is rather unique Pop Troll that has four heads that talk in unison. They are voiced by the McElroy Brothers.

Those are just some of the trolls you'll get to know and love in Trolls 2: Trolls World Tour . Did we forget your favorite troll? Sound off in the comments below.

Philip Sledge

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.

Blessed with heaps of confidence, he’s always the life, song and dance of the party. He recently had a son, Tiny Diamond, who has found his own way to follow in his proud dad’s musical footsteps.

Queen Poppy

Lives in: Pop Village, Pop World Top Troll traits: Cheerful-looking. Tall, pink hair. Sparkly cheeks. Fun facts: Queen Poppy is like sparkles in a Troll shape. She is the eternally happy and beloved leader of the Trolls. She truly believes that everything is possible, as long as you have a pop song in your heart. She gets very frustrated when others don’t get along and will do anything in her power to make them! She believes that, in life, why say it when you can sing it? Oh, and there’s nothing you can’t fix, celebrate or solve with a sparkly scrapbook.

Lives in: Pop Village, Pop World Top Troll traits: Bright-blue dreadlocks. Big smile. Smart hat. Oh, and four legs, of course. Fun facts: Unlike most other Trolls, Cooper has four legs instead of just two. And he’s not afraid to wiggle them about in the craziest dance moves. He may not be the brightest Troll around, but he’s definitely one of the friendliest, happiest and, not least, grooviest. His biggest talents are wicked harmonica solos, brutal honesty and pooping cupcakes when he’s scared.

Lives in: Pop Village, Pop World Top Troll traits: A little grumpy-looking. Favorite outfit: Vests. Purple-ish blue, spikey hair. Fun facts: Where others see problems, Branch sees catastrophes. If you think he is grumpy now, it’s nothing compared to how bad it used to be. Since the Trolls made their peace with the Bergins, Branch CAN be fun when he wants to. But for now, he’s most happy when he can keep to himself, avoid high-fives, snap branches when he gets mad, and prepare for new dangers that are sure to come down upon the Trolls any minute now.

Battle Dwarf

“Five angry trolls and a rock giant? Hah, what else d’ya got?” The Battle Dwarf is a fierce warrior of the Boar Clan, a brave and proud family renowned throughout the land for their expert iron-forging. He carries the axe Gougetusk, crafted by his own hand, and the legendary war hammer Snoutsmasher, famed for its ability to flatten enemies with the force of a charging razorback. The Battle Dwarf is as loyal a friend as he is ferocious an opponent, though his hearty back-slaps of comradery are almost as likely to knock you over as a blow from his hammer. The tattoo on his shoulder recounts the tale of how he once faced a fire-breathing sea dragon. He didn’t manage to slay it or anything, but just getting away in one piece was considered a great heroic achievement – and the encounter left him with his magnificent new hairstyle, too!

Biggie and Mr Dinkles

Live in: Pop Village, Pop World Top Troll traits: Biggie: Large. Blue. Comfy pants. Mr. Dinkles: Small. Yellow/pink. Mostly says “meep”. Fun facts: Biggie’s heart is almost as big as he is. And that’s saying something. But don’t let his enormous size scare you. He is really just a big old softie. He is not ashamed to burst into tears at touching moments. (Of which he has a lot.) He carries his beloved pet worm and trusty friend, Mr. Dinkles, everywhere he goes and likes to spoil him by dressing him up in cute little outfits.

Lives in: Pop Village, Pop World Top Troll traits: Head in the clouds. (Actually, his head IS a cloud.) White sports socks. Sly smile. Fun facts: Cloud Guy doesn’t take himself, or anything else, too seriously. He loves riddles, jokes, rain, having a good time and helping out his friends. For a high-five, of course. He enjoys teasing Branch because who could be more fun to tease than the most serious guy in town? He means no harm, he just can’t help playing pranks on everyone.

So much of the slick, ADD-riddled studio animation that passes for family-friendly entertainment these days has been watered down by cheap jokes and bland message-mongering. You have to hand it to “ Trolls World Tour ” for trying to turn that standard into a half-assed Trojan horse: Yes, this candy-colored jukebox musical sequel to the 2016 installment stuffs a ridiculous playlist into silly and psychedelic gags about hairy forest critters who thrive on joy and good tunes. And yes, it will mainly appeal to kids and stoners for those reasons alone. Yet buried in all that surface inanity, “Trolls World Tour” (which was set for a wide theatrical release but will instead snake its way into American households on VOD) musters a savvy treatise on the history of modern music, and a serviceable message about the cultural differences that make its diverse traditions worthy of celebration on their own terms. It’s a stupid movie with deep ambitions, energized by that trippy neon palette, and the occasional hot beat.

For the uninitiated, troll dolls are the plastic toys that exploded in the ’60s, but the current “Trolls” universe transforms them into cheery/eerie bundles of constant joy that thrive on parties deep in an enchanted forest. The previous entry found former grump Branch (Justin Timberlake) finding his inner joy and integrating into the never-ending party of the troll kingdom overseen by Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick). They seemed destined to continue as living ecstasy pills forever after. But the troll universe turns out to be much bigger than Poppy and her gleeful servants knew, and “Trolls World Tour” expands the mythology of the original movie by revealing the same narrow confines that made the original “Trolls” soundtrack so narrow: They’re “pop” Trolls (get it?), while other regions of their land include other troll communities that adhere to very different genres: Techno, country, funk, classical, and rock. (In an amusing acknowledgement of the movie’s modern-day limitations, Poppy’s dated map also has disco on it.)

This instant world-building ensures whatever happens in the immediate future, we might be seeing “Trolls” movies for years to come, and that’s a terrifying concept even in these trying times. But “Trolls World Tour” begs you to work through the fundamental inanity of its setup by trying to do something smart with it: returning director Walt Dohrn (back from the previous entry) and a small army of screenwriters use the expansive universe to careen through a range of musical experiences while the exploring the simmering tensions between them.

That’s largely due to the efforts of crude goth chick Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), the boisterous and egocentric Queen of the Hard Trolls who looks like a Mad Max reject and wants the world to bow to her distorted riffs. As the movie begins, Barb has enacted an evil plan to steal the musical power of the other troll communities in an attempt to play “the ultimate power chord” that will allow her to overtake all the other communities.

It doesn’t take a musicologist to parse ideas here. Given the history of rock ’n’ roll and pop music often threatening to dominate the cultural landscape, the outrageous setup already has a clever enough metaphor at its center for everything else to fall into place. Poppy thinks she can befriend Barb, but Branch — harboring a crush for his Queen and unable to get the words out — isn’t so sure. As the pair journey across the Trollniverse in an effort to save their kingdom, “Trolls World Tour” hurtles through the usual pileup of snazzy remixes, some more durable than others (“Trolls Just Wanna Have Fun” is particularly grating, but an opening cover of Daft Punk’s “One More Time” suggests the techno trolls could anchor a raging party movie of their own). The movie keeps finding new ways for the trolls to learn that pop music doesn’t deserve to dominate the show — and may have even stole it. The movie gets real in a come-to-Jesus moment between Poppy and the funk trolls, overseen by a terrific George Clinton and Mary J. Blige as their appropriate king and queen, as they explain the value of fighting back against homogenization. “Denying our differences,” Clinton’s King Quincy says, “is denying the truth of who we are.” Facts!

There’s much to enjoy about the zany dance numbers and the mostly goofy plot surrounding them, but the real star remains the most distinctive visual concepts to come out of DreamWorks Animation since “Shrek”: Dominated by bright, shape-shifting imagery that mutates across multiple sceneries throughout its running time, “Trolls World Tour” is a shimmering mind trip jam-packed with too much weird visual information to fully parse in real time. The WTF factor ranges from a four-legged Kelly Clarkson bolting out somber country tunes to Guy Diamond — the scene-stealing, all-nude, auto-tuned troll of the original — inexplicably giving birth to an infant glitter troll with his hair, and a newborn Tiny Diamond who immediately talks like Kenan Thompson. There’s the set of musical bounty hunters hot on the pop trolls’ trail, including a yodeling Sam Rockwell, Jamie Dornan as a smooth-jazz Yanni knockoff, and a showdown between K-pop and Reggaeton that actually does both traditions justice, if only for a moment. At a certain point, you either give over to this loopy set of circumstances and enjoy the eclectic beats, or give up early on, but “Trolls World Tour” works overtime to win you over. We’re a long way from the sophisticated internal logic of Pixar movies, where even the most unlikely universe develops a realistic foundation for narrative conceits. “Trolls World Tour” mostly just wants to mess with your head and make you smile, pulling off the endeavor about 50 percent of the time.

Once the full scope of its drama has been unleashed, “Trolls World Tour” settles into a familiar routine as it builds to an inevitable kumbaya finish. By then, the more complex ideas on display have been smushed into blander formula. As the euphoria dies down, “Trolls World Tour” winds up less a tribute to the grand tapestry of music at its center than a queasy attempt to turn all of that into yet another market-ready product; it’s the same danger that the movie indicts early on. Still, that paradox invites a degree of scrutiny that makes this baffling franchise at least somewhat purposeful. It’s not the panacea the world needs right now, but it displays a genuine desire to figure out what that might look like. These are strange times, and “Trolls World Tour” sits right at the center of them, tossing glitter to the masses and hoping something sticks.

Universal releases “Trolls: World Tour”   on VOD (and some theaters) on April 10, 2020.

Every song on the trolls world tour soundtrack.

2020's Trolls World Tour's soundtrack is even bigger and more diverse than the original movie's. Here's every song featured in the film.

Warning! Major spoilers for Trolls World Tour below.

Trolls World Tour is full of catchy earworms just like its predecessor - here's a breakdown of every song on the soundtrack. The film, which is just as glittery and fun as 2016's  Trolls , takes place at some point after the events of original movie.

In Trolls World Tour , Poppy is happily ruling as queen of her tribe, with her best friend Branch at her side. Thanks to an invitation to Queen Barb's world tour, Poppy learns her tribe is just one of six Troll tribes - pop, rock, classical, funk, techno, and country. Each tribe has a string that represents their genre of music. Barb intends to steal the strings from each tribe to force all trolls to come together under her music: rock. Branch and Poppy set out to convince Barb to unite all music, instead of destroying what's different than hers.

As the film encompasses a wide variety of music genres, so does its soundtrack. Here's every song from  Trolls World Tour  that appears on the soundtrack.

  • "One More Time" - Daft Punk:  The Pop Trolls sing this song at a party. Queen Barb's entrance interrupts the song.
  • "Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions:   Barb sings this song as she drops in on the Pop Trolls' party and informs them of her plan to acquire each of the strings so she can rule over every Troll.
  • "Trolls Just Want to Have Fun":   The song is an ode to "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper. Poppy sings it as her intro to the movie, with a little help from Branch, as he sings about his feelings for Poppy. The song is mashed up with "Groove is In the Heart" by Deee-Lite and "Good Times" by Chic.
  • "Born to Die" - Kelly Clarkson:  Clarkson, who plays Delta Dawn in the film, sings this original song.
  • "Crazy Train" - Ozzy Osborne:  Barb sings the song after acquiring the Techno string.
  • "Wannabe" - Spice Girls / "Who Let The Dogs Out" - Baha Men / "Good Vibrations" - Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch / "Gangham Style" - Psy / "Party Rock Anthem" - LMFAO:  Determined to show the Country music Trolls that music should make you happy, Poppy, Branch and Biggie sing this medley to them.
  • "Leaving the Lonesome Flats" -  Dierks Bentley:  The song plays over Branch, Poppy and Biggie's escape from jail.
  • "I Fall to Pieces" - Patsy Cline:  Hickory sings the song to Branch as he calls him out on his feelings for Poppy.
  • "Atomic Dog" -  George Clinton:  The song briefly plays while Poppy, Branch and Hickory fly into Vibe City.
  • "It's All Love" - Anderson .Paak, Justin Timberlake, Mary J Blige, George Clinton:  The star-studded pop song is used to explain the Pop Trolls' dark past.
  • "Perfect For Me" - Justin Timberlake:  Branch sings this song after he and Poppy have a big fight.
  • "Russian Roulette" - Red Velvet / "Mi Gente" - J. Balvin and Willy William:  The K-Pop and Reggaeton Trolls sing this song to distract Branch before they kidnap him.
  • " Barracuda "-  Heart:  Once she has all six strings in her possession, Barb sings this song so she can play her "ultimate power cord."
  • " Just Sing" - Justin Timberlake:  Every troll across each tribe comes together to sing this song.
  • "The Other Side" - SZA and Justin Timberlake:  The song plays over the final moments of the film.
  • "Don't Slack" - Anderson .Paak and Justin Timberlake:  This song plays as the film fades into the credits.
  • "Rock N Roll Rules" - HAIM and Ludwig Göransson:  The original song plays over the  Trolls World Tour  credits.

Unsurprisingly, given Trolls World Tour 's cast is made up of musical artists or actors with a background in music, these songs are integral to the film, and will be earworms for all who listen. Music is an intrinsic part of the Trolls franchise, and that continues with the Trolls World Tour soundtrack.
