01 . Mysore Palace/Amba Vilas Palace

Undoubtedly the most popular tourist attraction of Mysore, Mysore Maharaja Palace is located in the heart of Mysore city. Known for its renowned Mysore Dussehra Festival, it is one of the largest palaces in India. This palace was designed by a known British architect, Henry Irwin.

Residence of Mysore kings Wodeyars, the present structure of the palace was built in 1912 when the previous wooden building caught fire during a wedding ceremony of Chamaraja Wodeyar eldest daughter Jayalakshammanni. This palace is known for its architectural beauty which combines Muslim, Gothic, Hindu and Rajput style of architecture as well as Indo-Saracenic architecture.

02 . Jayalakshmi Vilas Palace

Built in 1905, for Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar’s eldest daughter, Jayalakshmi Vilas Palace also used to be called First Rajkumari Mansion. One of the most beautiful palaces in Mysore, it has been declared as a heritage site by the government of Karnataka.

This palace houses three museums namely Folklore Museum, Archaeology Museum and General Museum. This spacious palace, which is spread over 6 acres of land, has around 125 rooms and more than 250 carved doors and windows. It is located near another popular Mysore attraction Kukkarahalli Lake.

03 . St. Philomena’s Church

07 . Krishna Raja Sagara Dam

Popularly known as KRS Dam, this dam was built in 1932 during the reign of Wodeyar Kings. Named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, it is the creation of Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah, who is considered to be one of the best engineers of India.

Built over Cauvery River, this dam is also the first irrigation dam of India. It is 130 feet high and has 152 sluice gates. About 3km long, this dam is around 20 km away from the Mysore city. 08 . Lalitha Mahal Palace

Located at the foothills of Chamundi Hills, it is the second largest palace of Mysore. This palace was designed by E.W. Fritchley. The structure of this palace is believed to be an imitation of St. Paul’s Cathedral which is located in London. It was built in 1921, by the Mysore King Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV to serve as a guest house for the then Viceroy of India. Later on it served as a royal guest house.

In 1974, Lalitha Mahal Palace was converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. It is currently maintained by the Ashok Group of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC).

09 . Tombs of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali/ Gumbaz

Gumbaz consists of the tombs of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. It is located in Srirangapatna which is about 15 km from Mysore. It was built by Tipu Sultan in 1784 as tombs of his father Hyder Ali and mother. Later on in 1799 AD, Tipu Sultan was also buried here.

Standing in the midst of Lalbagh Gardens, these tombs captivate everyone with historical significance and alluring architecture alike. Their structure is found to be similar to that of Golconda Tombs. These tombs with a height of 20 meters are built in the Persian style of architecture. Visiting timings are 8 AM to 6 PM.

10 . Somnathpur Temple/ Chennakesava Temple

Located in Somnathpur, about 35 km away from Mysore, Chennakeshava Temple is one of the best examples of Hoysala architecture. Standing on a raised platform, this temple is a Trikuta. It consists of three shrines. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple was built in 1268 during the reign of King Narasimha III.

A heritage site, this religious shrine is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This temple has also been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site. It opens every day for visitors from 9 in the morning to 5.30 in the evening with a minimal fee of Rs.5 for Indian tourists and Rs.100 for foreign tourists.

11 . Trinesvaraswamy Temple

Located inside the Mysore Palace Complex, this temple is on its north eastern corner. Trinesvaraswamy Temple stands facing the Mysore Fort. Built in the Dravidian style, this temple is dedicated to three-eyed Lord Shiva, often referred as Trinesvara.

Initially located on the Banks of Doddakere, this temple came under the premises of the fort when the fort was extended during Kanthirava Narasaraja Wodeyar and Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar rule. The temple too has been renovated under the reign of Maharajas of Mysore.

Verditer Flycatcher, Brown-headed Gull, White Ibis, open billed storks, little cormorants, egrets, river terns, Pied Avocet and Common Teal are just a few birds that one can commonly spot at the lake. As many as 250 varieties of birds are found around the Lingabudi lake.

13 . Karanji Lake

Initially built as a source of drinking water and as a source of water for day to day chores, Karanji Lake was built by Mysore Maharaja. However, later in 1976, this lake became a part of Mysore zoo and since then it is maintained by Mysore Zoo authority. This lake is spread over 90 acres of land and is often referred to as the fountain lake.

Located at the Chamundi foothills, it has the largest walk-through aviary in the country. Not only visitors seeking a captivating view and serene waters, this lake attracts a lot of birdwatchers as well. More than 147 species of birds are seen here. The Regional Museum of Natural History, Butterfly Park are other attractions at the Karanji Lake.

14 . Kukkarahalli Lake

Built in 1864, this lake was the brainchild of Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Spread over 58 hectares, Kukkarahalli Lake is often visited by nature lovers. Its 5 km long shoreline is also a major attraction point apart from the rich avian fauna. Close to 180 varieties of birds can be spotted around the lake.

The first sand sculpture museum in the entire country, it is a unique and comparatively new addition to the list of sightseeing places in Mysore. Inaugurated in 2014, this museum showcases a wide array of brilliantly sculpted sand creations. This museum is a brainchild of M.N. Gowri, who is one of the very few women sculptors in India.

One of its kinds in India, Mysore sand sculpture museum, presents sculptures made just out of sand and water, depicting unparalleled craftsmanship, precision and creative excellence. A 3-dimensional selfie gallery has also been added to the museum in 2017.

Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum presents 16 different themes of sculptors. Some of the themes are Dasara procession, Disneyland, civilizations, Goddess Chamundeshwari, wildlife and many more.

18 . Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery/ Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery

Jaganmohan Palace, an alternate home of Mysore royal family, was converted into an art gallery in 1915, during the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. In the honour of Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur, this art gallery was renamed as Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery in 1955.

One of the best art galleries in India, it boasts of a rich collection of artefacts and paintings of the renowned painters from all over the world. With more than two thousand paintings and equally impressive numbers of artefacts, it is a must visit for art lovers. Located on Deshika Rd in Devaraja Mohalla, Chamrajpura, this art gallery opens at 8.20 AM and closes at 5.30 PM.

19 . Folklore Museum

Another interesting museum to visit in Mysore is the Folklore Museum. Established in 1968, this museum, as the name suggests, focusses on the varied folk arts and crafts of Karnataka. It has a rich collection of more than 6500 archives about dance, literature, music and various other arts forms from all over the state.

The collection range includes puppets, masks, props from folk dramas and much more. Situated inside the campus of University of Mysore in Manasa Gangothiri, it can be visited from 10.15 in morning till 1.15 in afternoon. It reopens at 2.30 in afternoon till 5 in the evening. However, it remains closed on every Sunday of the week.

20 . Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts

23 . Brindavan Gardens

Located on the banks of Cauvery River, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is spread over 66 sq.km. This bird sanctuary gets its name after the Hindu God Sri Ranganatha Swamy. Its scenic beauty and rich avian fauna is worth experiencing. Apart from spotting rare species of Migratory birds belonging to places as far as Siberia, Australia and North America, you can also go for boat rides at the river.

The view of surrounding greenery and serene water is worth experiencing. Indian tourists can visit Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary with a fee of Rs.50 while those from outside the country are required to pay Rs.3000 as entry fee. It is open from 9 AM to 6 PM.

25 . Shuka Vana

Another place to visit in Mysore for the admirers of nature and especially ornithologists, is the Shuka Vana. Established by the Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji, it is located in Avadhoota Datta Peetham of the Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Ashram.

This place was built with the main purpose of rehabilitating birds which have been injured or abandoned. It is now an abode of more than 450 species of birds, and also holds the Guinness Book of World Records for being the aviary with maximum number of bird varieties. 26 . Kishkindha Moolika Bonsai Garden

Another park established by Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji which one can visit in Mysore, if there is enough time, is the Kishkindha Moolika Bonsai Garden. A home to an extensive range of bonsai plant species, this garden is spread over an area of four acres. More than 450 species of bonsai trees can be seen in this garden.

Along with trees, you will find statues of Buddha and scared monkeys around the park. A small stream also flows within the garden. Every year, in the month of December, bonsai Conventions is also held here. Located within the premises of Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram, it is open to visitors on all days of the week except Wednesday. Its entry timings are 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM and 3.30 PM to 5.30 PM.

Tipu Summer Palace – Abode of Happiness

Also known as Dariya Daulat Bagh (Wealth of the Sea), Tipu Summer Palace used to be the summer retreat of Tipu Sultan. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mysore. The grandeur of Tipu Sultan Palace is one of a kind. The pillars of Teak and beautiful interiors painted with floral motifs will sooth your eyes. There is a magnificent garden in the palace that brightens the architectural beauty of this grand place. In the outer walls one can see beautiful paintings of battles and different events of that time. The palace also houses a museum which showcases the belongings of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali. Chamundi Hills – Grandeur of Mysore

Behind the Karanji Lake is the Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens at Mysore also known as Mysore Zoo. Mysore is the cultural capital of Karnataka, home to the Internationally popular MysorePalace which gets over 6 million visitors each year and is India’s second cleanest city after Auroville. Before the formation of Karnataka State in 1956, most of South India was under the rule of Mysuru state. It is the erstwhile capital of the Wadiyar Dynasty.

Interestingly, history or legends say that it was around this time during their rule that the famous sweet Mysore Pak was invented in the palace kitchen’s by one of their cook’s. The cook, although, had no idea himself of the name of the most mouth watering sweet whose ghee immersed flavor just melts in your mouth, boggling your taste buds. Such was the feeling of the then king when he first tasted Mysore Pak. • Mysuru Palace : Constructed in Indo-Saracenic style, the magnificent Mysuru Palace also known as Amba Vilas is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysuru. Its exquisite interiors – replete with carved mahogany ceilings, stained glass, gilded pillars and glazed tiles – epitomizes royalty and grandeur. The palace, illuminated with 97,000 lights, turns into a glorious spectacle at dusk on Sundays and public holidays. It is arguably the most visited palace in India.
• Lalit Mahal Palace : The second largest palace in Mysuru, located near the Chamundi Hills. Built in 1921, Lalit Mahal Palace is now a heritage hotel.
• Talakadu: A place of tremendous archaeological significance, Talakad is known for the 30 temples buried under the sands. Legend says that the temples of Talakad buried under the sands due to a curse. Excavations led to the discovery of several temples - mostly dedicated to Lord Shiva - belonging to the Hoysala, Ganga and Chola dynasties. Devotees throng this temple town during the Panchalinga Darshan held once in 12 years.
• Chittaranjan Palace: Chittaranjan Palace was built by the Maharaja of Mysuru for his sister in 1916. Chittaranjan palace is located on the Hunasur road.

• Mysuru Zoo: The Mysuru Zoo or the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is the most popular zoo in Karnataka and is one of the oldest zoos in the country, established in 1892. The zoo is home to abundant flora and fauna and is known for 1,450 species of animals and 168 species of birds belonging to more than 25 countries. Mysuru Zoo is a must visit when in Mysuru, particularly for animal lovers and families with kids. • Nagarahole National Park : Situated between the Mysuru plateau in Karnataka and the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu, Nagarahole is a 640 sq. km. sanctuary that is home to an abundant variety of wildlife. Rajiv Gandhi National Park is an important Tiger Reserve in Karnataka and is a major hub of conservation under Project Tiger and Project Elephant, the sanctuary is host to the largest herd of Asiatic elephants in the world and innumerable species of birds, flora and fauna including large predators, reptiles, gaurs, deer, bears and smaller animals. Nagarahole is a must visit national park for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers as the forest safari offers a very high probability of being able to spot Bengal tigers and Asiatic elephants in their natural habitat. Nagarahole national park is also home to a large number of wild dogs, leopards and bears. Commonly spotted herbivores animals are wild gaurs, wild boar, sambar deer, Antelope, spotted deers as well as several species of birds.

Religious Places

• Chamundeshwari Temple : Located 12 km from Mysuru, the Chamundi Hills is home to the Goddess Chamundeshwari, the patron deity of the Mysuru Royal Family. Built in the Dravidian style architecture, the 17th-century Chamundeshwari temple with a richly-attired image of the deity also has a huge statue of Mahishasura near the entrance. An older Ganga-era Mahabaleshwara Temple is also located on the hilltop. According to the legends, the Goddess defeated the demon king Mahishasura, on this hill. Halfway up the hill, you can also see the monolithic Nandi, believed to be one among the largest in the country.Said to have been 1000+ years old, Chamundeshwari temple featuring Goddess Durga received patronage from all rulers such as Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire and Mysuru Wodeyars. The temple tower (Raja Gopura) was added by Krishna Raja Wodeyar III in 1830.
• Temples inside Mysuru city: Kamakameshwari Temple, Maruleshwara temple and Chaudeshwari temple.
• Somanathapura (35km): Displaying every bit of the artistry that its sculptures were famed for, the Keshava Temple at Somnathpur is one of the best preserved example of Hoysala architecture. Completed in 1268, the temple exhibits ornate carvings on literally every inch. Though the image in the central sanctum is missing, the other two contain an image of Krishna playing the flute and of Janardhana, respectively. A unique feature of the temple is that sculptors were allowed to sign their work here.
• Gomatagiri (24km): Though not as tall as the one at Shravanabelagola, the statue of Gomateshwara at Gomatagiri is still an imposing figure, at 10 m tall. Shrines with the footprints of the 24 Jain Thirthankaras are scattered around the hillock. From the top, one can view the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam and the Brindavan Gardens, at a distance. Gommatagiri comes alive during the head-anointing ceremony of Lord Bahubali every September.
• Siddhalingapura: Just outside Mysuru city limits, Siddhalingapura is home to Chandramoulishwara temple.
• St. Philomena’s Cathedral, Mysuru : One of the largest cathedrals in India, St. Philomena’s Cathedral in Mysuru is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. The majestic church, built to honour the memory of Saint Philomena, a Latin Catholic Saint of the Roman Catholic Church, draws inspiration from the beautiful Cologne Cathedral of Germany. Remains of St Philomena are preserved at the cathedral. St. Philomena’s Cathedral is one of the tallest churches in Asia.
• Nanjangud (23 km): Nanjangud owes its name to the ancient temple of Nanjundeshwara situated on the banks of the River Kapila. An architectural marvel, the temple stands out for its remarkable tiered gopura, stucco work and ornately sculpted mythological scenes. The temple, with Lord Srikantheshwara as the main deity, has an impressive gallery of 122 metallic figures on Shaivite themes and a stone Nandi facing the sanctum sanctorum. Nanjangud is also famous for the exotic Nanjangud rasabale – a unique banana variety grown in and around here, which was given a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
• Datta Peetham . Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Avadhoota Datta Peetham is an ashram in Mysuru with beautiful gardens with bonsai among other plants.
• T.Narasipura: Thirumakudlu Narasipura is known for Agastyeshwara, Markandeshwara, Someshwara, Gunja Narasimha and Hanumantheshwara temples. River Kaveri and Kabini merge near T Narasipura.
• Golden Temple : The Namdroling Monastery, popularly referred to as ‘The Golden Temple’ is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. Located in Bylakuppe, about 5 kms from Kushalanagara, the golden temple complex is home to about 16000 refugees and 600 monks.
• Tagadoor: Home to Mulasthaneshwara, Lakshmi Narayana Swamy and Ankanatheshwara temples
• Suttur: A prominent Veerashaiva centre, agrahara and home to Sutturamma temple of Ganga times. Other prominent temples near Suttur are Hoysala style Narayanaswamy temple, and Mahadeshwara temple.
• Sosale: Home to Honnadevi, Veerabhadra, Kote Ganapathi and Kolalu Gopala temples.
• Saligrama: Home to Yoga Narasimha, Shambhulingeshwara, Jyothimayeshwara and other temples.
• Periyapattana: Home to Chennigaraya temple and an old fort with Vidyeshwara temple, Anjaneya Temple and Manikamma temple.
• Maszid-e-Nawab Saheb: Oldest mosque in Mysuru from Tipu Sultan’s times. Halain Moimen mosque is the other notable mosque in Mysuru.

• Brindavan Gardens (24 km): Spread across an area of 60 acres, Brindavan Gardens is adjacent to India's first irrigation dam - the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, across the river Cauvery. Modelled on the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir, the garden entices visitors with its lush green lawns, terraces, parterres, flower beds, topiary and multihued fountains. Today, the Brindavan Gardens is world famous for its ethereal beauty, grandeur and musical fountain.
• Melkote (50 km) Known for its shrines, monasteries, Iyengar Puliyogare and the Academy of Sanskrit Research, Melkote is a scenic hill town and an important pilgrim centre in Karnataka. Melkote is the location of the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, with a collection of crowns and jewels which are brought to the temple for the annual celebration. Legend has it that Ramanuja, the Vaishnavite saint, recovered the lost idol of the main deity and installed it here. The main attraction here is the annual Vairamudi festival when the deity is adorned with the magnificent diamond studded crown offered by former Maharajas of Mysuru and taken out in procession.

• Dasara : The ten-day festival of Dasara has become synonymous with Mysuru, thanks to the grand celebrations held at the Mysuru Palace. Celebrated with aplomb and joy, Mysuru Dasara is the “Nadahabba” or the State-Festival of Karnataka. With fairs, cultural events, dance performances and musical concerts, the ten-day festival is celebrated with pomp and pageantry. The tenth day, Vijayadashami, brings a spectacular procession led by the image of the deity. Bedecked elephants, cavalry, foot soldiers, folk dancers, musicians and tableaux wend their way through the city. The extravagant celebrations come to an end with a torchlight parade as fireworks light up the night sky.

There are two types of safaris in Kabini- one is the jeep safari and the other is boat safari in Kabini River. • Mysuru Rail Museum : The Rail Museum was setup in 1979 and provides a fascinating insight into the history and growth of the railways in India. It contains a number of interesting exhibits, including the impressive Sri Ranga Pavilion, with its royal coaches belonging to the Maharaja of Mysuru, the vintage Maharani's Saloon built in the UK in 1899, and a kitchen dining car built in Mysuru in 1914. • Regional Museum of Natural History: The historical city of Mysuru added another landmark with the opening of the Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) on 20th May 1995. 17. Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park was once the hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Mysore. #1 Stare in wonder at Mysuru Palace

Mysuru’s centre is dominated by the walled maharaja’s palace, popularly known as Mysuru Palace, a fairytale spectacle topped with a shining brass-plated dome.

It’s especially magnificent on Sunday nights and during festivals, when it is illuminated by nearly 100,000 light bulbs. The palace was completed in 1912 for the 24th Wadiyar raja, on the site of the old wooden palace that had been destroyed by fire in 1897.

In 1998, after a lengthy judicial tussle, the courts decided in favour of formally placing the main palace in the hands of the Karnataka state government but the royal family, who still hold a claim, have lodged an appeal, which is ongoing.

Twelve temples surround the palace, some of them of much earlier origin.

#2 Nip into the Residential Museum

Privately owned by the present scion of the royal family, and housed within the residential part of the palace, the Residential Museum displays royal treasures, paintings, musical instruments, children’s toys, furniture, trousseaux and armoury.

#3 See the paintings at the newly-renovated Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery

Built in 1861, the three-storey Jaganmohan Palace was used as a royal residence until 1915, when it was turned into a picture gallery and museum, the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery, by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV.

Most of the “contemporary” art in the collection dates from the 1930s, when a revival of Indian painting was spearheaded by E.B. Havell and the Tagore brothers, Rabindranath and Gaganendranath, in Bengal.

#4 Gawp at artefacts and jewellery of various tribal groups in the Government Museum

Occupying a two-storey building that was once home to the Duke of Wellington, the Government Museum is devoted to anthropology on the ground floor, with photos, artefacts and jewellery of various tribal groups, mainly from the Himalaya and northeastern India. Upstairs there is a collection of statues and a modest selection of modern art. The grounds are strewn with large terracotta sculptures.

#5 Visit one of the oldest zoos in India

Officially named Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru Zoo is one of the oldest and best in India. Established as far back as 1882, it was opened to the public in 1902 and has grown to encompass 245 beautifully landscaped acres, with spacious compounds for most of the animals that live here.

The zoo boasts all the usual big mammals, including leopards and tigers, and there are also many species of bird and reptile to be admired, though some of their cages do not make viewing the animals easy.

#6 Take in the views from Chamundi Hill Temple

Around 12km southeast of the city, Chamundi Hill Temple is topped with a temple to the chosen deity of the Mysore rajas – the goddess Chamundi, or Durga, who slew the demon buffalo Mahishasura.

It’s a pleasant, easy bus trip to the top; the walk down takes about thirty minutes. Take drinking water, especially in the middle of the day – the walk isn’t very demanding, but by the end of it, after more than a thousand steps, your legs are likely to be a bit wobbly.

Inside the twelfth-century temple, which is open to non-Hindus, is a solid gold Chamundi figure. Outside, in the courtyard, stands a fearsome, if gaily coloured, statue of Mahishasura.

#7 Try some yoga

Despite the passing in 2009 of its founder, Sri Pattabhi Jois, the world-renowned Ashtanga Yoga Institute, 3.5km northwest of town in Gokulam, is still a revered pilgrimage destination for devotees.

The surrounding neighbourhood has in recent years turned into a bustling expat haven, filled with cafés, guesthouses, restaurants and internet cafés. The institute doesn’t offer drop-in classes; students must register for a minimum of one month, and book at least two months in advance.

There are several other centres clustered around Gokulam, including Bharath Shetty’s popular IndeaYoga which offers early morning courses of between two and eight weeks’ duration, and Yoga Bharata, who welcome drop-ins and offer courses of one to four weeks Some 3 km south of town, Mysore Mandala Yogashala, is a self contained retreat, offering excellent instruction, an organic café, well-tended garden, cultural events and drop-in classes.

Mysore has an extensive city bus network, covering all major areas a traveller might visit.

You will only need around two to three days to visit Mysore. That's enough time to visit the major attractions like Mysore Palace and then venturing up Chamundi Hill to pay homage at the Chamundeshwari Temple.

The railway station is 1.5km northwest of the centre. For long hauls, the best way to travel is by train, usually with a change at Bengaluru , the fastest service is the a/c Shatabdi Express which continues to Chennai.

The Hampi Express Goes daily via Bengaluru to Hosapete There are 2–5 daily express services to Hassan, of which the Talguppa Intercity Express is the fastest.

Mysuru has three bus stands: major long-distance KSRTC and other state services pull in to Central, near the heart of the city, where there are advance booking counters.

The Private stand is about 1 km northwest of here and a host of agents there can make bookings for private buses.

Tens of thousands protest against Canary Islands’ ‘unsustainable’ tourism model

Organisers say 50,000 turn out to call for limit on tourist numbers, saying model makes life unaffordable and puts strain on resources

Tens of thousands of people are protesting across the Canary Islands to call for an urgent rethink of the Spanish archipelago’s tourism strategy and a freeze on visitor numbers, arguing that the decades-old model has made life unaffordable and environmentally unsustainable for residents.

The protests, which are taking place under the banner “Canarias tiene un límite” – The Canaries have a limit – are backed by environmental groups including Greenpeace, WWF, Ecologists in Action, Friends of the Earth and SEO/Birdlife.

“We’ve reached the point where the balance between the use of resources and the welfare of the population here has broken down, especially over the past year,” said Víctor Martín, a spokesperson for the collective Canarias se Agota – The Canaries Have Had Enough – which helped to coordinate protests on Saturday across the eight islands.

Eleven members of Canarias se Agota have already been on hunger strike for a week to protest against the construction of two large luxury developments in southern Tenerife, which they describe as illegal and totally unnecessary.

Police said 20,000 people had turned out for the demonstrations, but organisers put the figure closer to 50,000, Spain’s TVE public television said.

“We are not against tourism,” Rosario Correo, one of the protesters, told TVE. “We’re asking that they change this model that allows for unlimited growth of tourism.”

Protesters also gathered in Madrid and Barcelona to show their support for the rallies in the Canary Islands, public television said.

Last year, 13.9 million people visited the islands, which have a population of 2.2 million. Tourism accounts for about 35% of the archipelago’s GDP – bringing in €16.9bn in 2022 alone – but local people say the industry is stressing natural resources and pricing them out of the rental market.

Figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute show that 33.8% of people in the Canaries are at risk of poverty or social exclusion , the highest proportion for any region except Andalucía.

Martín said the regional government’s continuing focus on tourism at a time when the climate emergency was leading to cuts to water supplies made no sense. “Demand is rising in urban areas where there are more tourists,” he said. “We’ve had a very dry winter and a water emergency’s already been declared on Tenerife.

“There are going to be restrictions if there’s not more rain this month but it’s 36C here right now. This is all unsustainable and it means that we won’t even be able to keep normal levels of tourism going. And yet the authorities and the businesses here are trying to stick with this model.”

The housing situation in many parts of the archipelago was also dire because of high prices, low wages, a lack of public housing and the continuing cost of living crisis, Martín said. “I realised we’d reached the limit when I saw people who were working as hotel maids or waiters were living in shacks.

“Wages are so low that they don’t cover the basic costs of living, especially in the current crisis, which is global, but has been felt keenly in the Canaries because we have to import practically everything.”

He insisted the protest movement was not anti-tourist, pointing out that many people in the Canaries had known and liked generations of families from countries such as the UK and Germany.

“The problem isn’t the tourists,” he said. “It’s a model that was built around, and with the connivance of, a business class that doesn’t want to listen to what needs to be done, and with a political class that serves that business class instead of serving all the citizens.”

He said a complete rethink of the Canaries’ tourism model could not wait. “What we’re asking is very simple. Given that tourism is the main economic activity and the cause of all these problems, we want an immediate halt to these two mega-projects,” he said of the Tenerife developments.

“We also want a tourist moratorium that will lead to a study of the load each island can take and which will determine whether we’ve already passed the critical point. In areas where there’s an overload, we want to see a stage of degrowth of economic activity to benefit natural resources. Otherwise, you have an existing model that only benefits a very few people.”

Martín said a proper study of the problems the Canaries suffer from could have global repercussions. “This rethinking of the tourism model could put the Canaries on the map as an example of sustainable tourism development,” he said. “We could be known for something positive instead of something negative.”

Fernando Clavijo, the regional president of the Canary Islands, has said his administration is already taking action. “All the actions this government has taken have been based on a revision of this model,” he told reporters this week . “The Canaries tourist model has been a successful one, but obviously, as with anything, there are things that could be perfected.”

Over-tourism has become a major issue in many Spanish cities and regions , triggering protests and backlashes in Barcelona , and leading the authorities in Seville to consider charging visitors to explore the Andalucían city’s famous Plaza de España .

Ban on public nudity among proposed Brevard tourism cultural grant modifications

Brevard County Commission Chair Jason Steele is recommending that a new restriction be put in place on county tourism grants to arts and cultural organizations ― no nudity at public events, or else you'll be disqualified from getting a grant.

Steele put forth his proposal at a recent meeting of the Brevard County Tourist Development Council , the tourism advisory board that Steele also chairs. Steele wants the proposal incorporated into the county guidelines for cultural grants — guidelines that must go to the County Commission for final approval.

"I'm only concerned about nudity and partial nudity and things of that nature that might be offensive to children and their families," Steele said.

During the TDC discussion of the issue, Steele didn't define "partial nudity" or cite any specific examples of this happening at events that received county cultural grants.

In a subsequent interview, Steele said he is not aware of any particular past instances, and is not targeting any specific events or organizations. But he wants to make sure that grant recipients abide by state and local laws, and wants to avoid situations "that potentially could harm children."

Cultural grants and other tourism grants are funded by Brevard County's 5% tourist development tax on hotel and motel rooms, vacation rentals and other short-term rentals.

Tourism cultural grants have been awarded by the county for years, but became controversial since August, when Florida Rep. Randy Fine, who represents South Brevard County, raised questions about a proposed $15,000 grant to the LGBTQ+ organization Space Coast Pride for its 2024 Pridefest event in downtown Melbourne.

Part of Fine's concerns stemmed from the Drag Queen Story Time that was a part of some previous Pridefest events. Drag Queen Story Time was not included in the 2023 Pridefest, held in Sept. 23.

Space Coast Pride eventually received approval for its grant for its Sept. 28, 2024, event. But not before the County Commission briefly withdrew funding for cultural grants altogether, affecting 25 arts and cultural organizations and events, as money was shifted to paying for ocean lifeguards and marketing expenses for the lifeguard program.

"There was a big issue before," Steele said, referring to the cultural grant program, while adding: "I'm not pointing my finger at anybody."

Steele said his proposed restriction is limited to events that are held in a public venue that can be viewed by passersby. He said it's not intended to censor performances by local theater groups or other entities that may qualify for grants ― events in which patrons purchase a ticket for the event, and parents can decide on their own whether to bring their children to the performance.

The Brevard County attorney's office has been working to come up with specific language for the County Commission to consider, reflecting Steele's wishes.

Space Coast Office of Tourism Executive Director Peter Cranis said the language in the grant guidelines "can't be too subjective."

The discussion of Steele's proposal came as the Tourist Development Council made a series of recommendation for the cultural grant program — as well as for two other grant programs funded by the tourist development tax ― for the 2024-25 budget year that begins Oct. 1.

The TDC recommended that $605,000 be allocated for cultural grants, and that the grants be tied to the number of out-of-town visitors the events are expected to attract.

It also recommended $240,000 in grants for sporting events, with amounts tied to the number of hotel room-nights each events generates.

Cranis, however, pointed out that cultural grant funding would be contingent on what the County Commission decides to do related to funding of beach lifeguards. Money for the county's lifeguard program potentially could be shifted from the pool of tourist tax money designated for cultural programs.

"There may not be any money for cultural grants, period," Steele said.

Nevertheless, TDC member Julie Braga, a hotel general manager, maintained that the TDC needs to send the message to the County Commission that cultural grants are important, and that arts and cultural events help bring tourists to the Space Coast, thus generating tourist tax revenue.

Tourism + Lagoon Grant Programs

The TDC recommended that Tourism + Lagoon Grant Program — which is designed for tourism-related projects that benefit the Indian River Lagoon — be given $500,000 for grants in 2024-25.

The program previously was funded for up to $1 million for several years. This grant program was suspended for the 2023-24 budget year, as a result of the expenditure of all tourist-tax-generated beach funds in order to repair the South Beaches because of damages from several storms in late 2022.

Under the TDC's proposal for the 2024-25 budget year, grants in this program could be for up to $50,000 apiece.

The Tourism + Lagoon Grant Program guidelines will come before the County Commission for final approval on Tuesday. The cultural and sports programs guidelines will be on a future County Commission agenda, potentially in July.
