Our guide was great and interacted well with the group. He had lots of animal knowledge and found us some great animals. Our transport was a van but it made it there and back and wasn't too bad for game viewing. Plenty of space for the 6 of us. Accommodation is a basic tent with bed and mossie net but was all we really needed. Meals were good and there was always plenty. While the trip is advertised as 4 days, it's only 3. I would have enjoyed having an extra day to spend in the Mara.

Many tourists who visit Masai Mara national park may be a bit snobby about their fascinating experience in this park, but I confess to a soft spot for Masai Mara. It is East Africa's most popular and best-known park, with easy access from Nairobi and plenty of cheap accommodation options. It was my first time to visit the park and I can still remember the thrill of seeing my first Lioness walking royally in the middle of the road with a queue of safari vehicles lined up waiting for her to move. The fact that we had the chance of seeing an elephant for the first time was really amazing. The cheaper and incredible services offered by the tour guides, combined with cheap accommodation in this place makes it seem as if the tourists here outnumber the animals. Our tour was so amazing that we even took photos of some animals and learnt much about wildlife. This place was really nice and worth our visit. I would recommend more tourists to visit this park and bare witnesses of incredible services.

Hello everyone,

We arrive by air to NBO and spend that night at an airport hotel at NBO. The next morning/afternoon I need a transfer to Wilson airport where we have a room for that second night at the Aeroclub of East Africa Wilson Airport hotel (the following morning we catch an early flight to Masai Mara).

Coming back we fly back from Masai Mara to Wilson and will need a ground transfer back to NBO to catch our international flight to the Netherlands.

Can anyone reccomend safe and reliable ground transfer options between these two airports. I'm struggling to find online, other than Uber (which I wonder about) and renting a car which doesn't sound like something I want to do. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

If using a tour operator ask them to provide your transfers.

Similarly ask your hotels.

If you want the peace of mind in using a 'Meet & Greet' taxi service, have a look @ Jim Cabs.

Take the NBO Expressway to cut down the driving times & by-passing the traffic on the Uhuru Highway.

Kenya: Floods cause widespread devastation in Nairobi

Roads have turned into rivers in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, as a top official said flooding had “escalated to extreme levels.”

Heavy rain has pounded Kenya in recent days, causing widespread devastation.

The UN says that at least 32 people have lost their lives and more than 40,000 have been forced from their homes because of the rain and flooding.

Edwin Sifuna, who oversees Nairobi county, posted footage showing an entire neighbourhood flooded.

In the clip, residents can be seen trapped on the roofs of their homes.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels. The County Government for all its efforts is clearly overwhelmed. We need all national emergency services mobilised to save lives,” he said.

Hundreds of others in Nairobi and nearby areas were marooned by floods following heavy rain overnight.

Local media reported that residents of the Mathare slum had been forced to sleep on rooftops overnight.

Major highways have been submerged by floodwater, causing traffic jams across the country.

“The city is at a standstill because most roads are flooded,” Uber driver Kelvin Mwangi told the AFP news agency in Nairobi.

A five-year-old boy who was left stranded by the flooding was rescued by a police helicopter in Yatta, south of Nairobi, on Tuesday.

“The child, visibly shaken by the ordeal after being stranded for quite a long period, was safely rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for care,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

Wider East Africa has also been badly affected by heavy rain in recent weeks.

Nearly 100,000 people have been displaced in Burundi, while at least 58 people have died in Tanzania.

One of the biggest drivers of heavy rain in East Africa is the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).

The IOD — often called the “Indian Niño” because of its similarity to its Pacific equivalent — refers to the difference in sea-surface temperatures in opposite parts of the Indian Ocean.

During a positive phase the waters in the western Indian Ocean are much warmer than normal and this can bring heavier rain regardless of El Niño.

However, when both a positive IOD and an El Niño occur at the same time, as was the case last year, then the rains in East Africa can become extreme.

One of the strongest positive IOD patterns on record coincided with one of the strongest El Niño patterns in 1997 and 1998, with severe flooding reported. These caused more than 6,000 deaths in five countries in the region.
