Tomjachu Bush Retreat

Meals are available upon request in the Lodge Dining room. An array of activities can be enjoyed in the surroundings, including Kruger tours and Scenic Route Tours outsourced to a specialist guide. Fishing, hiking, mountain biking and game drives are offered on the property.

The Bush Cottage was very beautiful, with a great pool and lovely rooms. The main lodge had a beautiful common area that included the dining room and pool terrace with a fantastic view. The Staff was very attentive and helped make our stay more comfortable and enjoyable. If you decide on Tomjachu, please take the opportunity to go on the hiking trails. The groundskeeping staff does an excellent job at manicuring the gardens near the various properties as well as the trails. Other than the lush plant life, the wildlife was a major highlight. Hearing the abundant birdlife was a privilege, not to mention seeing the various game close up on foot.

Rockview Lodge

Situated in Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga region and Mbombela Stadium reachable within 8.1 km, Rockview Lodge features accommodation with free WiFi, a children's playground, an outdoor swimming pool and free private parking.

This is just a little paradise nested on the way to Blyde River Canyon. The staff is super friendly. The property has many animals and birds. Design and decoration is outstanding with an eye for detail. Very lovely property!

Offering views of the garden and the river, the timber log chalets at Hippo Water Front Lodge provide a rustic style outdoor atmosphere. Each chalet has a open plan deck with kitchen and dining area. Barbecue facilities are available.

An amazing place to stay in peace and tranquility. The location next to the river is beautiful and we were lucky enough one evening to see several hippos. A relaxing place with beautiful grounds and well thought out lodges.

Shandon Lodge exceeded my expectations. The room was very neat and comfortable and the staff was absolutely amazing. The breakfast was delicious and well worth it. We also decided to have dinner which was amazing. I would definitely recommend this place for a romantic getaway.

Road transfers from KMIA to Umkumbe can be arranged and take approximately 2 hours. A road transfer from Skukuza to Umkumbe takes approximately 1-1.5 hours and please bear in mind the Kruger National Park fees due when landing in Skukuza.

We went to sonpark upper deck and really enjoyed our time there it is not over crowded and we felt safe

I had had the pleasure of sleeping in Patsy (the converted school bus) before so I stayed in one of the containers this time. I was blown away by how cleverly the shipping container had been utilised to make spacious, elegant and comfortable accommodation. The decor is so imaginative and pleasing on the eye. Janine has a wonderful gift for interior design and Gavin knows how to marry form with the wonderful bush environment. I had the folding doors open day and night during my three-day stay and with just the mosquito net between me and the elements. The sounds of birds, toads and wildlife helps to create such a relaxing atmosphere. The hosts are so enthusiastic about their off-the-grid venture and are only too happy to explain their set-up. They have established marked walks around the homestead and seating areas to just admire the beautiful panoramic views. The homestead is just a 10-15 minute drive from the centre of Nelspruit. Janine and Gav cannot do enough for their guests. They love the area and have established a network of contacts amongst other hostelries and service providers so can help in planning activities and make recommendations to make the most of your stay. As well as the gorgeous surroundings, the care and attention to detail by the hosts just makes you walk around the plot with a huge smile on your face and all the tension and cares of modern life just evaporate. I loved their four huge hounds, two Great Danes and two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and followed them galloping around Kokiville. I spent many an hour with Gavin and Janine putting the world to rights over a bottle of Windhoek lager or a nice South African Shiraz and replaying the 1995 Rugby World Cup or great moments in cricket. In your fridge, the hosts thoughtfully provide milk. The well-appointed room has as a Nespresso machine with capsules, tea bags, that South African favourite, rusks, and some welcoming sherry. And for those unable to break free of the modern world, there is good Wi-Fi. The shower has a great jet of water thanks to a pressure pump Gavin installed. There is a barbecue area and, on the decking outside the container, comfortable seats to look at the starry sky and commune with nature. I can’t recommend this place enough. I suggest you extract as much information about the area and activities in the area from your boundlessly enthusiastic hosts. They suggested the Sudwala caves to me and I had a fantastic time exploring the World’s oldest dolomite caves.

The capital city of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, Nelspruit (Mbombela) is considered the gateway town between the Kruger National Park, Mozambique and Swaziland. It is also the largest town in the Lowveld, a lush area where tropical fruits and nuts are farmed. The outlying areas consist of rolling green hills, waterfalls, forests and rivers, a place where Mother Nature parades her complete array of magnificence.

Nelspruit is strategically located between the large Gauteng cities and the coast of Mozambique, its history tells of it being on a trade route and later, a junction for trains carrying cargo to the shipping port in Maputo Bay. 1. A visit to the Kruger National Park is mandatory. This world famous reserve hosts the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), the endangered African wild dog, hyena, crocodile, hippo and many other mammals. A total of 451 bird species have been officially recorded in the park.

2. Farm stalls along the roads around Nelspruit are common, however, the Halls Farm Stall on the R104 is worth a stop to sample the excellent coffee and fresh home bakes on offer. All manner of gifts, jams, and preserves line the shelves. The place has a lovely garden to rest up.

3. Travel to the Croc Grove Crocodile Farm on the Schoemanskloof road to see the 75 breeding Nile crocodiles, some well over 3m in size. Try and schedule your visit during croc feeding times.

Nelspruit was officially renamed to Mbombela (meaning Crowded Place in isiSwazi) in 2009, however, the new name is long in being adopted. At this stage, both names are recognised, use either when asking for directions.

Chacma baboons are numerous in the Kruger National Park and live in huge troops numbering up to 200 animals (typically between 30-40).  Troops consist of a family group of males, females and their young.  Young baboons depend on their mothers for transportation, initially the little “pink foots” cling to the underside of the mother.  At around 3 months of age they start riding “jockey style” on mommy’s back (leaning against the tail for support) as seen in this footage...

We have been travelling to to South Africa every year for the past 12 years and stayed at many game reserves including the Krugar many times. This year we saved up hard and achieved our dream, to stay in Sabi Sands. All that I can say it's Well Worth every penny, the reserve is just something else! It's the best and it's a must, forget the rest push the the boat out and and stay at in Sabi Sands.. We chose Elephant Plains due to our budget. It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... So if you are looking for a safari holiday then look no further this place is the best. Memories we will never forget.

This was a great experience overall. The resort was nice and homely. Our ranger Kelsey and tracker Bennett were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions that we had. The game drives were exciting and the search for the leopard was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms were spacious, and the food was almost unending. The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped.The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

When we surprised a rhino and it charged our Land Cruiser, leave it to our guide, Brogan, to take care of business. With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

All the information you need about getting to Arathusa Safari Lodge

Arathusa Safari Lodge is located in Mpumalanga, South Africa, within the northern sector of the coveted Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent to the world-renowned Kruger National Park. This region has a long and reputable history within the South African tourism industry due to the presence of incredible concentrations of wildlife, which is accessible via high-quality private game safaris.

Experience the heart of the African bush with daily direct flights with FedAir from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Nelspruit KMIA and Skukuza Airport gateway to the Kruger National Park and the private game lodges. A short, small aircraft transfer connects you onward to Arathusa’s doorstep and the Arathusa Airstrip. On departure, a short air transfer from the lodge airstrip or Skukuza Airport to Nelspruit KMIA connects you conveniently to Livingstone (Zambia) and Vilanculos (Mozambique) gateway to the Bazaruto and Benguerra Islands. Cemair & Airlink also offer flights to Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit.

Arathusa Airfield, located just to the west of the Kruger National Park, has a  tarred runway which is 1200 metres long. The geographic coordinates of this airport are 24 degrees, 44 minutes, 39 seconds South (S24°44’39”) and 31 degrees, 31 minutes, 21 seconds East (E031°31’21”). Arathusa Airfield is 1200 feet above sea level.

FEDERAL AIRLINES SHUTTLE AND CHARTER FLIGHTS – 

Federal Airlines offers a premium point to point shuttle service and also highly customizable charter flights. Two flights from Johannesburg to Sabi Sands and two flights from Sabi Sands back to Johannesburg are offered daily – see timetables below:

Morning departure from Johannesburg to Lodge

• Check in for this flight will be open from 07:00

• Pax must be checked in at the Federal Airlines kiosk latest 09:30 to connect onto this flight

• Pax must be checked in at the Federal Airlines departure lounge latest by 09:45 to connect onto this flight

• Departure and arrival times may vary up to one hour

The following vehicle entrance fees are charged by the Sabi Sand Wildtuin on entrance into the reserve, and are excluded from the rates for accommodation:

•  Light vehicles: (under 3500kg GVM) R310.00 per entry PLUS a per person fee of R140.00 per entry (2025: R350 and R160 respectively

•  Heavy vehicles: (over 3500kg GVM) R540.00 per entry (fees are inclusive of 15%). 2025: R620

• Effective 01 January 2024 to 31 December 2024  the mandatory Sabi Sand Wildtuin Conservation Levy is  R345 (inclusive of 15% of VAT) per person per night.

Effective 01 January 2025 to 31 December 2025 the mandatory Sabi Sand Wildtuin Conservation Levy is R410 per person per night (inclusive of 15% VAT, and subject to change as prescribed by the Sabi Sand Reserve)

•  This contribution goes towards conservation initiatives within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, with a particular focus on the prevention of rhino poaching.

•  These costs are added to invoices for accommodation, although arrangements may be made to add the charges to extras payable by guests on departure from the reserve.

• Johannesburg is approximately 550 km / 7 hours by road from Arathusa Safari Lodge

• Nelspruit is approximately 170 km / 3 hours by road from Arathusa Safari Lodge

• Hoedspruit is approximately 2 hours by road from Arathusa Safari Lodge

• Orpen Gate is approximately 46 km / 1.5 hours by road from Arathusa Safari Lodge

• From Johannesburg, take the N12 to Emalahleni (Witbank). At Emalahleni (Witbank), take the N4 to Nelspruit

• You will go through 2 national toll gates on this road – Please insure to carry enough money for all toll gates

• Take the R40 from Nelspruit to White River and proceed to Hazyview

• Remain on the R40 towards Bushbuckridge (from Hazyview it is approximately 68 km/ 1 hour until Acornhoek/Manyaleti Road

• Turn right at the robot to Acornhoek/Manyaleti

• Continue straight for 36km

• Turn right onto dirt road

• Follow dirt road for 6.4 km until the Uthar Clinic is on your left

• Turn left on gravel road (Utha Store will be on the right) – 7.3 km to the Gowrie Gate

• Entrance fee to the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is payable in cash

• Travel straight through the Gowrie Gate. At signboards continue straight to Arathusa Safari (do not turn right to Arathusa Private) – 5.9 km

• Turn right at the stone wall for Arathusa Safari Lodge & follow the road until the entrance to the lodge on the right

• Follow the R40 until you get to a T-junction

• At the T-junction, turn left

• Travel on this road for 7km to the Acornhoek / Manyeleti road turn left at the robot

Due to the ongoing roadworks on this route, please enquire with the lodge for directions

•  Entrance fee to the Sabi Sand Reserve, at the Gowrie Gate entrance: See above for details.

•  While Arathusa Safari Lodge is accessible with 2-wheel drive vehicles, it is a dirt road and access is more comfortable in a 4-wheel drive vehicle

•  Use Gowrie Gate ONLY. Due to river crossing you will not be permitted to use any of the other gates in Sabi Sand Reserve

•  It is best to arrive before 15h30 for the afternoon game drive, although check in time is from 12h00. It takes approximately 7 hours to drive from Johannesburg to the lodge

•  Please DO NOT follow your GPS ‘quickest route’ co-ordinates to Arathusa Safari Lodge. This route inevitably leads guests through the incorrect entry gates (Kruger National Park and into the Sabi Sand Reserve) which do not service Arathusa. Furthermore, many of the prescribed roads are not navigable in a normal vehicle. Following GPS co-ordinates can result in getting lost in the middle of the bush, or unnecessary delays of up to 3 hours.
