Discover auckland travel expo goes ahead.
Auckland remaining at alert level one is good news the Discover Auckland Travel Expo, which will go ahead ensuring people are wearing masks and scanning in with the Covid Tracer app
Photo: 123rf
After a new case of community transmission in the city was revealed yesterday , officials decided today there was no need to change alert levels .
The Discover Auckland Travel Expo has confirmed it will go ahead with 70 exhibitors at Shed 10 from 10am to 5pm tomorrow.
Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development destination manager Steve Armitage said although some may still stay away from the city centre, he expected the event to be a success.
"That wasn't lost on us at all. Clearly this summer period is a huge one for us in terms of how we can shore up support for the visitor economy, those tourism operators on the periphery of the region who've struggled over the course of the last eight to nine months," he said.
"The appetite is there and people are keen to get out and about. I do think there may be a slight impact some people are more circumspect about large crowds and certainly coming back into the city centre."
Waiheke's EcoZip Adventures manager Gavin Oliver is among those exhibiting.
"I'm really relieved. This is a great opportunity for Aucklanders to get out and engage with some tourism businesses who have been doing it quite tough over the last few months."
"We're really relying on a big December and January and there's a lot of businesses if they don't have a strong December and January they may not be able to re-open their doors in the new year, so it is a pivotal moment for us."
Armitage said the city centre's economy was estimated to have suffered a $10 million hit today as workers heeded the government's call to stay home.
"I've seen figures suggesting that the impact on the city centre economy alone would have been around $10 million. We can't sustain that type of impact too frequently. It's already had a huge impact with a number of businesses particularly on the golden mile of Queen Street having to shut up shop."
Registration for entry to the expo is free.
Auckland this weekend will also host the Diwali Festival, the Chocolate and Coffee Show, the City of Auckland Rally and Battle of Jack's Ridge; Dumplings on Dominion; the Women's Rugby Triple Header; Big Boys Toys and the Aotearoa Music Awards.

About 70 airlines, tourist authorities, tour operators, adventure suppliers and rental car companies will exhibit their services at this year's Travel Expo at Greenlane's Logan Campbell Centre on Sunday. Tourist authorities include those from Canada, Cook Islands, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, New Caledonia, Niue, Norfolk Island, Northern Territory, Samoa, Tahiti and Vanuatu. "The value of having tourist authorities represented is that you can talk to experts from the countries you are thinking of visiting," says Matt Freeman, marketing manager of Flight Centre, which is organising the event. Travel operators will also show nine films, with screenings every half-hour from 10.15 am. Overseas Working Holidays will promote a Pub UK programme - which provides a live-in job paying $100 to $450 a week, with training, to travellers aged 18 or older who have British work permits. Expo-goers can enter a draw for two free return air tickets to London, flying Qantas and British Airways - a prize worth about $5000. Entry to Travel Expo is free. It is open from 10 am to 4 pm.

The history of TRENZ
TRENZ is a vital part of the New Zealand tourism industry. Originally known as Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand, TRENZ started in the 1960s as an annual travel trade show based in Auckland. The earliest iterations of TRENZ hosted about 30 Sellers and Buyers.
Today, the TRENZ trade show is a hundred times its original size and boasts an international reputation as a supreme business event.
TRENZ continues to evolve, innovate and elevate the industry. While borders were closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, TRENZ Hui online and national events were held to help New Zealand Sellers prepare for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
TRENZ Talks, a series of fast-paced and lively speaker sessions featuring cutting-edge content, was launched at TRENZ Hui and continues to evolve.
The digital platform TRENZ Connect was created to enhance the resilience of our world-leading industry. The platform allows Sellers and Buyers to connect year-round, regardless of time zone or location.
For those that qualify for the in-person trade show, the platform is also their digital gateway for registrations, pre-event planning and information.
In 2023, the in-person trade show returned to ensure New Zealand is well positioned on a world stage. The event is expected to have generated $174 of economic impact a minute over four days, with ongoing benefits to the city and New Zealand’s tourism industry.
In 2024 TRENZ will be held in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington for the first time. The format for 2024 has been remodelled to allow for more time before and after the business meetings for exploration and discovery of the capital city.

NZ-China expo roadshow highlights trade opportunities

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A New Zealand-China expo roadshow was held in New Zealand's largest city Auckland on Monday.
Brett O'Riley, CEO of Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) and co-chair of New Zealand-China Products Expo Committee, said in his speech that there are many new industry sectors that poses trading opportunities between New Zealand and China, such as importing building products, clean energy and low-carbon products and even pet food from China to New Zealand.
Jeff Shepherd, executive director of New Zealand China Trade Association(NZCTA), highlighted the import part of New Zealand's trading with China.
"I'm sure that New Zealand is going to benefit from some new products that are coming from China," said Shephard.
Representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the Chinese embassy in New Zealand, China Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand, the Auckland Business Chamber, Employers and Manufacturers Association, and New Zealand China Trade Association attended the roadshow. ■

Exponent's (nasdaq:expo) investors will be pleased with their respectable 49% return over the last five years.
It hasn't been the best quarter for Exponent, Inc. ( NASDAQ:EXPO ) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 10% in that time. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. In that time, it is up 42%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 84%. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 17% drop, in the last year.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Exponent achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 7.8% per year. So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 7% per year. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Exponent's earnings, revenue and cash flow .
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Exponent's TSR for the last 5 years was 49%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Exponent shareholders are down 16% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 24%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Before spending more time on Exponent it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.
Of course Exponent may not be the best stock to buy . So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
