Reviews of Sirena on Cruise Critic are Concerning

By katiebeth , January 26 in Oceania Cruises

Cool Cruiser

We are booked on the May 3rd sailing on Sirena London to Barcelona.

We are frequent cruisers but I have not been on these boards recently.    We have sailed on Oceania twice in the past, one European sailing and one Caribbean.   (Pre-Covid).     My husband and I very much enjoyed Oceania and especially the food.

However, I have recently read several reviews posted on Cruise Critic over the past year and the reviews are consistently bad.    Many have indicated that the overall product is in decline; food, excursions, customer service, and the list goes on …

My husband and I are really looking forward to this cruise, but I must say the recent reviews have me concerned as they are overwhelmingly negative.

Do others who have cruised recently on Sirena seen an overall decline post covid?     We have booked several excursions thru Oceania and am now having second thoughts.

Any input/feedback would be greatly appreciated.      Thank you very much,   Nancy

It's a great ship and you will have a fabulous time. Red Ginger is awesome.

We were on Sirena 11/19-29/2022 for 10 nights in the E. Caribbean. Loved her and our smallish B2 cabin. So much so, that we're back on Sirena 8/28-9/19/2024 on a B2B in the Baltic. This time in an F and one of the upper deck big C1s.

Just have reasonable expectations and be prepared to be happy. (We just did a magnificent 20-night B2B on Riviera in the Med in Oct-Nov 2023.)

We were on the Sirena over the holidays and really enjoyed it.  Most of the food was quite good (there are always going to be some things that don't appeal to some individuals, myself included).  We didn't have any particular problems, but the service in general felt very good to us.  The excursions were admittedly a mixed bag, but we also booked fairly late, so there may have been some good ones that were no longer available.  We were in an Oceanview cabin, so the storage was fairly limited.  We even had to lift the bed up a bit to be able to slide our full sized luggage underneath due to the lip on the bottom of the bedframe.  The bathroom was very small, but certainly workable.

Personally, I would have no problems going back on the Sirena.

Holiday Sharing

Blow off the negative and go with a positive attitude and you will have a fabulous time. As was said, a visit to Red Ginger will “make your day” unless of course you do not like Asian Fusion dining.  Must try the Watermelon and Duck Salad, the Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass or their Rack of Lamb or the Teriyaki Beef (Filet Mignon) and so much more to choose from.  The staff is wonderful and they really do want you to have an awesome experience.  ENJOY!

Thank you all very much for taking the time to respond.    I appreciate it so much.

I was having a difficult time imagining that Oceania had declined so much since our last sailing in June of 2017.    Again, we had a wonderful time on both of our Oceania cruises and are looking forward to returning in May.

I understand the excursions can be a mixed bag, but we wanted to use our shore excursion credits and we go with a positive attitude and expect to have a lot of fun. 🤩

The itinerary looks great and we will be visiting many places we have not been to before ….so that is exciting.

Again, thank you for your responses.

Great Review

I think it's all about expectations.

Someone who complains about small cabins and bathrooms clearly did not do their homework. If cabin size is important to you, book PH or book another ship.

Someone who expects the entertainment on O to be on par with the big ships clearly lives in a fantasy world. This will never happen.

However, we did not notice any decline compared to pre Covid when it comes to service and food. Still among the best, in par with SS in our opinion (and much cheaper). So I would really take the reviews with grain of salt.

I've been waiting for the right time to share this photo. It was on our Hurtigruten Norwegian coastal cruise. The oldest ship in their fleet. A real pothole. No curb between the shower and the (small) rest of the bathroom. We couldn't both stand on the floor at the same time. Ship did have stabilizers and one rough night we would slide from the top of the bunk to the bottom - laughing every time. HAD A FANTASTIC time and had another one booked before covid raised its ugly head.

We're currently on Sirena, left Miami yesterday. The ship is in fine shape. We're in a PH cabin that looks pristine. We dined in the Tuscan Grill last evening and dinner was just as good as our prior cruise last year on Regatta. We walked up to the restaurant after boarding and were able to get this extra reservation for 7:00 PM. Spent day one at the pool and there virtually no chair hogs - plenty of choice loungers at 9:30 AM and its a sold out 10 day Caribbean cruise. Heading to Red Ginger tonight.

Thanks

Cayman09.    Thank you for taking the time to respond.    I really appreciate it.

Wishing you a wonderful time on your cruise.    Enjoy!

Was on Sirena in a PH last March on the TA to Lisbon. HAD A FABULOUS TIME. All good! Perfect?, no. Fabulous, yes!  I generally write up a travel diary but this was a TA, so lots of sea days. I’m booked in August on Sirena again, so clearly no issues!

I found the entertainment staff to be so sweet, so cute, so talented! There was a Country Fair one day. Everyone had fun. Here are the so cute dancers!

We are currently on Sirena and have no complaints. We left Miami on Friday and ate in Red Ginger yesterday. The duck salad and miso glazed sea bass were just as good as in the past. The staff have been wonderful and we’re looking forward to the rest of the cruise. Don’t worry about going on Sirena, you’ll have a wonderful time.

Just got off her yesterday.  Our second O cruise since November when we were on the Nautica.

I cannot compare the service in the past but we thought the service was excellent.  If you are larger

folks the bathroom might be a challenge.

Also just off yesterday. Our first time on one of the smaller ships. Fortunately we had a PH suite so did not have the issue with the smaller showers. I will admit I prefer the larger ships but that is just more a preference thing. The ship was in excellent condition and looked beautiful. Food and service also was excellent with a couple of hiccups but nothing worth complaining about. Just another exceptional Oceania experience.

Also just off Sirena yesterday and it couldn't have been better. Food and service were terrific. We were two couples and between the four of us there was only one meal that was slightly sub par. The dining room was timely for our expectations, a bit under 90 minutes each time. The specialties were outstanding, especially Red Ginger.

Reading the reviews of the Vista, I wish I was back on the Sierena.

Well I’d be wary of reviews. I’ve been on Vista and loved it.  In fact, just booked another cruise on it while onboard Sirena on Saturday.

Said a comedian on an Azamara cruise: the shower on this ship is so small you just have to soap the walls and turn around to get washed! But the cruise was fantastic in every way!

Hello Katiebeth, we are also booked on this cruise!  We are looking forward to it and hoping we will not be disappointed with our first Oceania cruise. I hear such wonderful things usually. Did you find any other forums worth reading about this trip?

IWantToLiveOverTheSea

It's now been 9 or 10 months since I sailed on Sirena.  But I found her to be wonderful, and almost the same as I found her a year before that. I think some people expect perfection on a beer budget and are disappointed.

I believe more people take the time to write a negative review than a positive one regardless of cruise line. When people complain about small cabins and lack of entertainment they obviously didn’t do their homework and picked the wrong ship/cruise line. It’s like choosing RCCL and complaining there are too many kids on board.

We booked our first Oceania cruise for next year on the Vista and are going in with a positive attitude. We already know what to expect from a smaller ship as we did a Viking Ocean cruise last year. It would be difficult to go back to a mega ship after that.

We sailed on the Vista for 16 days in Nov of 2023. Loved the ship and everything about it. You will have a fantastic time!

Panama Canal was great. Oceania wasn't.

Mar 28th, 2024

Don't take tours sponsored by Oceania. One of ours was terrible and they didn't stand behind it. Should have been a 7 hour tour and it lasted 10. We got back on the ship after sailing time. We asked for a refund and they said no because not enough people complained. A ridiculous position for a cruise line that is supposed to be higher end. This was our second time with them and will never sail with them again.

Trip experience could of been better if ....

Mar 21st, 2024

In general, this cruise would be much better if: 1/ provided detail port information and disembarkation information in advance for better planning and ashore experiences 2/ provided the accurate information about health situation on the cruise rather than announcement about one sick person leading to cancellation of all aboard activities Missing the first port of call and cancellation of major onboard activities made this trip quite boresome and socially unpleasant after all

Small Island Splendor

Definitely a adult cruise. At 61 I was one of the youngest passengers. Great food and staff. Limited onboard activities. Small cabins but very clean. Interaction with the staff was excellent. Don’t book for onboard activities. Very relaxing. Never crowded in pool or hot tubs.

Overall, very nice trip and the ship was fine. I will cruise again possibly on this line but will never use one of their shore excursions again.

Internet terrible. We paid for an Owners Suite and had to pay extra per day per item for better connection. Food over-rated in their ads Service and staff first rate

High quality everything!

Not worth it

Wonderful trip around the Mediterranean

Jul 1st, 2023

All-in-all, we enjoyed the cruise very much. We are considering going back to Crystal though, because Oceania is quite expensive, and though we don't mind paying it, we would expect flawless service and we did not receive it this cruise. I saw it everywhere so it wasn't just aimed at me. The other thing that is a huge fail in our opinion, is that the excursions nearly ALWAYS return to the ship after 2:00pm and with only one exception, in ten days every time we returned to the ship in the afternoon, there was no where to eat. I heard it from lots of people, and of course it was our experience as well. It was super frustrating to go out on a very physically demanding excursion (all of ours were) and return exhausted and ravenous and literally only have one option: room service. We never called room service on the afternoons because we knew the rest of the ship was too. There was WAVES, the poolside restaurant, but there is very limited seating, it is outdoors and hot, and a limited menu that many people (including me) were too keen on as there were really no healthy options. So that was super frustrating, so much so that it will impair our excitement for the next two cruises we have booked with oceania to book any optionals. We may have to make other arrangements because Oceania just can't seem to line up returns of the day tours with having viable options for dining. If the buffet would even stay open til 3 instead of closing at 2 it would have been a HUGE help.

Some good, some not so Much

May 30th, 2023

Oceania is totally overestimated on all Counts. The staff was outstanding - end of story. Tired ship, above average food but little more tell

4-6 cruises

Good cruise on a nice ship but with a few glitches

Mar 23rd, 2023

This was our first cruise on one of Oceania's smaller ships. We liked the larger Riviera/Marina better but this was not bad. Major kudos for the entertainment!!!! We will not sail in/out of Aruba again.

Oceania Sirena Itineraries

Oceania sirena review, review of oceania sirena.

The 1999-built (as "R-Four") Oceania Sirena cruise ship is an R-class vessel with sisterships Regatta , Insignia and Nautica . Until 2016, the boat was part of Princess Cruises fleet under the name "Ocean Princess". Oceania Cruises Sirena ship was drydock-refurbished in 2019 (May) by the OceaniaNEXT fleet renovation project (2019-2020).

The vessel (IMO number 9187899) is currently Marshall Islands /France- flagged (MMSI 538006842) and registered in Majuro .

History - construction and ownership

Oceania Cruises is a US passenger shipping company and luxury travel brand owned by NCLH-Norwegian (shipowner), Between April 2007 and September 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, Oceania and the sister company RSSC-Regent are owned by NCLH - acquired at a total cost of USD 3 billion. Oceania ships offer luxury cruises with relatively shorter itineraries, as well as Around The World voyages up to 180 days in length.

Oceania Sirena cruise ship

The 700-passenger ship Sirena was scheduled for a 35-day refurbishment in Marseille , France in March 2016, which cost around USD 40 million. The new Oceania ship Sirena was transformed just like her R-Class sisters to feature renowned speciality restaurants and the line’s latest “luxury cruising” inventions – the Baristas service and the Terrace Cafe (cook-to-order grill).

Decks and Cabins

Oceania Sirena staterooms (349 total, in 16 grades) include 62 Suites, 170 Balcony, 89 Oceanview (including 14 single-occupancy) and 28 Inside cabins. Most staterooms (66%) are Balcony and sized 175 ft2 / 16 m2. Most cabin balconies are smaller (sized 45 ft2 / 4 m2).

The largest accommodations are the Owners Suites (620 ft / 58 m2 plus 345 ft2 / 32 m2 terrace).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Sirena guests take advantage of the flexibility of 4 open-seating dining venues. The Grand Dining Room serves Continental cuisine. it is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Alternative, reservations-required options are Toscana, which offers gourmet Italian food, and the steak house Polo Grill. The buffet restaurant Terraces serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is transformed into "Tapas on the Terrace" at night for a relaxed atmosphere. All dining venues have bars, and there is no cover charge. In addition, a poolside grill offers hamburgers, sandwiches and salads at lunchtime. There is also a pizzeria in the buffet area. The observation lounge Horizons serves afternoon tea. Room service is available 24 hours.

Oceania Sirena cruise ship

The Sirena ship offers a new bistro-style concept. At lunch, the Dining Room is transformed into the “Jacques Bistro” serving an exclusive menu with signature dishes by Oceania’s executive chef Jacques Pepin.

Follows the complete list of Sirena restaurants and food bars.

  • Grand Dining Room (complimentary 340-seat restaurant for open seating Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner; offers French-inspired dishes, and menus change daily)

  • Red Ginger (feng shui Asia speciality restaurant with a 5-course “tasting” and a la carte menu)

Oceania Sirena Wiki

Oceania Cruises Sirena ship ("Ocean Princess" until 2016) was built under the name R Four, as one of the R-class vessels acquired from the fleet of the defunct Renaissance Cruises. In April 2016, the new ship joined her R-Class sisters (and current fleetmates) Insignia , Nautica and Regatta . From this "Renaissance-class" are also the Azamara ships Journey , Pursuit , Quest , Onward (Pacific Princess) .

The vessel was initially owned by a group of French investors and operated by the Renaissance cruise line company. Renaissance bankrupted in 2001, and Princess Cruises purchased two of its vessels - Ocean and Pacific. First, they renamed the "R Four" ship to "Tahitian Princess" and later to "Ocean Princess".

The boat was delivered to Oceania in March 2016. It was purchased from its previous owner Carnival Corp for USD 82 million and underwent a 35-day long drydock refurbishment in France ( Marseille ) at the cost of UD $50 million before entering Oceania's fleet.

The name "Sirena" means "mermaid" in Spanish. The ship was transformed from "Princess" to "Oceania" with both new and traditional touches, including the addition of the Italian seafood/steakhouse restaurant Tuscan Steak (in the place of Toscana and Polo Grill restaurants), the Asian restaurant Red Ginger, also Terrace Cafe and the popular Baristas bar.

In December 2015, Claudine Pepin (TV host, cookbook author, daughter of master chef Jacques Pepin) was announced as godmother for MS Sirena. Jacques Pepin is also Oceania Cruises' Executive Culinary Director. The naming ceremony was held on April 27, 2016, in Barcelona. The traditional bottle smashing failed the first time (considered very bad luck for the ship), but the "Moet & Chandon Champagne" bottle was utterly smashed in the ship's hull on the second try. Following the christening, the godmother and her famous father sailed on the Inaugural Cruise, featuring themed onboard events (including cooking demonstrations and cookbook singing). All guests booked on the maiden voyage received a complimentary copy of Claudine Pepin's book "Let's Cook French".

On September 2, 2014, the NCL Norwegian company purchased the company "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (owner of Oceania and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas ) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

The Apollo Group company provides all Oceania ships with the entire onboard hotel product and services. This includes administration, food staff (preparation and serving), housekeeping staff, also the vessel's provisioning and crewing. Other cruise lines served by Apollo are Thomson UK (Marella Cruises) and RSSC-Regent .

The longer itineraries also visited ports in the Bahamas (including Great Stirrup Cay Island ).

Each Cuban voyage featured a wide array of traditional Cuban dishes, as well as expert-led onboard lectures themed on the country's history, art and music.

Next table shows a 7-day round-trip itinerary (themed "Timeless Cuba") with prices starting from USD 3400 pp (double occupancy Inside cabin rates).

Oceania Sirena refurbishment 2016 review

MS Sirena's 2016 drydock refurbishment (35-day refit, March-April, in Marseille) cost ~USD 50 million.

The remodeled ship had all its outdoor deck spaces and cabin balconies covered with top-quality teak and features custom-made tiles, luxury china (Villeroy&Boch), silver flatware (Christofle) and crystal (Riedel), plus the traditional for all Oceania vessels large collection of artworks displayed throughout the ship.

  • During the drydock, all Owners and Vista suite accommodations were updated with colorful artwork, plush carpeting, dark walnut furniture finishes.

  • All Vista Suites had their bathrooms upgraded with marble touches and teak balconies.
  • All cabins were renovated with new furnishings, luxury bedding, artworks.

In 2014, the vessel was purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings from Carnival Corporation for USD 82 million. The USD 24 million were paid in cash in November 2014.
