‘Boy Kills World,’-Inspired Animated Series In Development

Overview: America’s favorite cracker magnate is back, baby! The Hornsby family returns for more character-driven and commercial drama when they’re forced to put out fires wherever they turn. Matt’s school, J. Davis High, becomes a microcosm for conflict when Royal Crackers gets pushed out of the cafeteria in favor of a healthier alternative that just so happens to be peddled by the Hornsbys’ greatest rivals, the Dennisons. Elsewhere, Deb’s affinity for a new Peloton-esque exercise routine throws a curious wrench in the spokes of her relationship with Stebe. Each Hornsby seeks out validation in their own respective ways, but it might take catastrophic conflict and the destruction of a business or two in order to get these wounded souls satisfaction. Our Take: Royal Crackers has been one of the biggest surprises to come out of Adult Swim in the last few years and an animated series that truly attempts to do something different. There’s a rough-around-the-edges visual aesthetic that’s perhaps kept some audiences at a distance, but the moving characters and heightened storytelling makes it easy to fall in love with this series. Royal Crackers’ first season heavily leaned into marketing that turned up the “Succession, but with crackers” angle and it’s reassuring to see its sophomore season get out of its own way and be more confident in its own skin. The Hornsby family are still deeply dysfunctional and detached, yet these two early entries from season two expand the series’ scope in ways that are both entertaining and organic. Crackers have never been so comedc. Royal Crackers’ second season begins with many compelling scenes where the entire Hornsby family work together and their irrational love for money enables one another to get crazier and bring out the worst in each other. These episodes move further away from the central power struggle within the Hornsby family and there is a greater attempt for them to work together and take on the community, which is a clever angle and an effective way to build upon the chaos. Royal Crackers messes with the Hornsbys’ social standing as they try to find peace within the community. The Hornsbys do their best to awkwardly blend in and learn how to accept themselves before they're accepted by others. That being said, this season emphasizes that the Hornsby family are the good ones here and not just a deluded, out of touch cracker conglomerate. It’s a subtle change, albeit a fundamental one, that helps the audience root for the Hornsbys and empathize with their plight, rather than simply pity them or laugh at their antics, which could occasionally be the timbre back in season one. There’s also some playful drama to be had here over the stress of being under scrutiny in a public venue, like a television broadcast, and how this pushes characters like Stebe to unexpected places. Royal Crackers focuses more on the Hornsby family’s fragile egos, frail images, and how this is all liable to crumble like a cracker. The Dennison family are back this season, bigger than ever, and continue to function as satisfying rivals that pose a threat to the entire Hornsby family. One of the silliest and most ridiculous details about the Hornsby/Dennison feud is that Dennison Snacks is pushing kale chips against Royal Crackers, considering that crackers aren’t even that unhealthy of a snack food. It’s not like they’re peddling donuts, cookies, or even anything that’s dense in sugar. It’s apples to organic apples here, which makes this crusade all the more outlandish and entertaining. It perfectly exemplifies the broader mania that often drives Royal Crackers storylines. The Dennison family drama boils over into a larger meditation on bullying, whether it’s in school, the community, or America as a whole, all with various degrees of imposing fascism. It’s a smart, effective way to juxtapose Matt’s personal problems with universal ones. On that note, Royal Crackers’ premiere features one of the stronger Matt storylines and he emerges more as a character this season than the shy cipher role that he largely fulfilled back in season one. Royal Crackers’ first season finale, “Craftopia,” did wonders for his character and so it’s satisfying to see the series continue to explore this and build upon it, rather than have him regress or decide that season one already covered this material while Royal Crackers instead shifts its focus to the rest of the Hornsby family. That being said, Royal Crackers really shines a light on Stebe and Deb’s marriage dynamics in a realistic manner that functions as the beating heart of this sweet animated comedy. It’s endearing to get stories that authentically explore marital malaise that don’t purely reduce these issues to broad punchlines. Theo, who’s frequently positioned as the most ridiculous member of the Hornsby family, also experiences a validating identity crisis. There’s a really satisfying wrinkle through these episodes where Theo turns to George Zeebos as a new father figure and someone who will better appreciate his odd interests, even if it’s a toxic, manipulative dynamic that’s doing demonstrably more harm than good. It’s a dark path for Theo to head down, but another layered character dynamic that fits the series’ themes. It speaks to the vulnerable, flawed nature of the Hornsby family and how they all really just want to find love and acceptance, even if it has to come from a heartless corporate overlord. Some of the strongest episodes from Royal Crackers’ first season are the ones that really play with form and indulge in science fiction and fantasy, like “Factory 37.” It’s encouraging to see that these more outlandish genre decisions are still very front and center in season two. There’s fantastical chaos like violent, bloody massacres, robot adultery, and a Terminator-esque billionaire CEO in these two episodes that provide so much personality and flavor to the franchise. Even the season premiere, which is a reasonably grounded and human story, ends with a completely ridiculous stinger where a human being shatters to pieces, defies reality, and it’s goddamn glorious. This is Royal Crackers in a nutshell – real, emotional storytelling that occasionally explodes into ludicrous lunacy. It feels like vintage Adult Swim programming in the best way possible. “Fight for J. Davis High” and “MyCycle” both go out on surprisingly sweet resolutions that focus on understanding over admonishment. As silly as Royal Crackers gets, it’s appreciated to see sincerity creep in and for the episodes’ conclusions to push commendable values that stand for something more substantial than simply creating the silliest story possible. There’s genuine weight to these episodes’ messages, which is what helps separate Royal Crackers from other series of its ilk. It functions as a testament to this show’s staying power beyond two seasons and that it’s far from out of ideas in its weird, wonderful world. It’s the secret ingredient to Royal Crackers’ success that guarantees that it’s not just some “unhealthy snack.” These are real characters with real things to say, even if they do frequently devolve into manic chaos. Royal Crackers never forgets that it needs to do more than that. Royal Crackers comes out of the gate swinging in its second season. There’s such a strong energy, a snappy rhythm, and tight storytelling in these two episodes that naturally moves the narrative along. It’s a powerful start that will please those who enjoyed season one, but it’s also a perfect, accessible entrypoint for any newcomers who are curiously checking out Royal Crackers for the first time. These two episodes are an excellent summation of what the series is all about and the heightened characters who bring its stories to life. It’s a very natural, confident start to the season that hopefully only continues to build upon this fantastic foundation. Bring on the all-out war between the Hornsbys and Dennisons. 8/10 Royal Crackers Season 2 Cast

Recap / The Patrick Star Show: S1E15: "Uncredible Journey" / "Host-a-Palooza"

Edit locked.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uncredible.png

Original air date : 2/10/2023

Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye all gather for a playdate. But when GrandPat accidentally breaks the downstairs toilet, and when the repairman goes to fix it, he takes the pets away by mistake. It's up to them to find their way home.

Uncredible Journey contains examples of:

  • Character Narrator : Tour guide Rube Goldfish narrates the episode, telling the story of the Star family pets Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye getting taken away and journeying back home. When they're tired and can't find a way home, Rube breaks into the story (despite acknowledging that he shouldn't) to point them in the right direction.
  • Enemy Mine : Ouchie and Pinkeye are rivals, often seen fighting and chasing each other. However, they have a mutual friend in Tinkle, and will put aside their feud to all play together.
  • Heroic Fire Rescue : While finding their way home, the pets are grabbed by a passerby who points to a baby in a burning building. They go in, extinguish the fire using Tinkle's toilet water, and save the baby, to a crowd of applause.
  • Narrating the Obvious : The episode has Rube as a Character Narrator . However, most of what he says is describing the exact things that just happened on screen. Rube : Uh-oh, Mr. Plumber thought Tinkle was the broken toilet. He replaced him with a regular toilet and took Tinkle away.
  • No Animals Allowed : No animals are allowed in the grocery store, so the pets get kicked out for trying to enter. They form a Totem Pole Trench disguise with Tinkle as the head to get in, steal items, and get out.
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated : GrandPat breaks the downstairs toilet, so the family calls a plumber. When he arrives, he hears noise from upstairs (sentient toilet Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye playing together) and captures the three of them, then replaces Tinkle with a regular toilet. The Star family see that Tinkle isn't eating or playing, and mistakenly believe he's dead, holding a funeral in the front yard. After finding their way home, the three pets reveal themselves, and Tinkle is welcomed back into the family.
  • Stock Animal Diet : When the pets look into the store windows, Pinkeye is seen drooling over carrots.

Original air date : 2/17/2023

Patrick gets injured on his show, leaving him in no condition to perform. In his stead, Squidina must improvise a line-up of guest hosts, each worse than the last. But how long will the Patrick-loving audience tolerate these replacements?

Host-a-Palooza contains examples of:

  • Advanced Tech 2000 : Cecil's high-tech fishing rod is called the Cecil 6000 Modern Fishing Rod.
  • Brick Joke : When Squidina first tells Patrick about the guest hosts, he says that he hopes one of them is ice cream. At the very end of the episode, Patrick does call on a guest: a living ice cream cone.
  • Compliment Fishing : Parodied as part of a Literal Metaphor . GrandPat and Cecil throw their fishing lines around randomly, and finally hook each other, leading them to compliment each other. They tell her that they were "fishing for compliments": Squidina groans .
  • Hidden Depths : Cecil is shown to be a talented fisherman and inventor. While his custom fishing rod does have some questionably useful attachments, the fact that he built it and they appear to work is still pretty impressive.
  • Lame Pun Reaction : When Cecil and GrandPat are having a fishing contest, both of their catches are set-ups for puns . Squidina isn't amused. Squidina : Dad jokes and grand-dad jokes? (slaps forehead) Ugggh!
  • Let's See YOU Do Better! : Annoyed by the audience repeatedly asking for Patrick, Squidina decides to act like him herself . The audience finds out, and isn't satisfied. At her breaking point, Squidina tells the audience to go and try doing a better Patrick impression. The viewers do; they run on stage and start jumping around, leading the entire set to collapse.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band : A magic act scene is scored with some showy, triumphant music. But when Pinkeye surfaces from the hat and yawns, the music slows down and decreases in pitch.
  • Older Is Better : GrandPat shows up to complain about Cecil's overly modern fishing rod. His "rod" is just a bone with a rusty hook, but he brags that he didn't even need bait to use it, and mocks Cecil for using something so complicated.
  • Pull a Rabbit out of My Hat : Shmandor waves a wand over a hat surrounded by magic items. Pinkeye comes out and makes an anticlimactic entrance, clearly waking up from a nap.
  • Terrible Interviewees Montage : Essentially the entire episode. Every new host Squidina puts on either has terrible material, has their acts go completely off the rails, or is otherwise unfit to entertain the audience.

  • [The episode begins at the Star family house as the sun plays the violin.]
  • Rube: Well hi, everybody! This your old pal Rube here! And boy, have I got a tale to tell you! [fade to inside the Star house] Ahem... [we see Squidina sleeping and hugging her camera] it's morning at the Star family home [Patrick turns in his bed and eats popcorn] and everyone is tucked snugly in their beds. [we hear something crashing in the living room] That is everyone except... Ouchie the sea urchin and Pinkeye the sea bunny. [Ouchie and Pinkeye are laughing and chasing each other all the way upstairs] In the wild, these two are natural enemies. But today is different. [Ouchie and Pinkeye go inside the upstairs bathroom] Today, they're going to visit their best friend... Tinkle, the upstairs toilet.
  • Tinkle: [barks happily]
  • Ouchie and Pinkeye: Yay! [hop inside of Tinkle's lid as they all play together]
  • Rube: And when those three get together, they have nothing but fun.
  • [Ouchie and Pinkeye flush themselves in Tinkle, then jump out of the lid.]
  • Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye: Ta-da!
  • [GrandPat enters the upstairs bathroom and gets toilet paper thrown at him. He sees Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye licking their tongues together.]
  • GrandPat: What!? Oh, bluefish. I'll have to use the downstairs bathroom. [runs out and trips on a doll on the stairs] Ohhh... I gotta go, I gotta go! [trips down the stairs and lands on the downstairs toilet, making water spray everywhere] I broke the toilet again!
  • [His eyes fill with water, which sprays on the screen and wash out to the Stars in the car. A plumber drives up.]
  • Cecil: Hello, Mr. Plumber! The broken toilet is inside.
  • Bunny: We're taking GrandPat to the restroom at the mall.
  • GrandPat: [kicks Cecil] Hurry, son! [holds out dentures] My back teeth are floating!
  • Cecil: Heh. Okay!
  • [The car flips backwards and down the road. The plumber enters the house and looks around, then turns off the water main.]
  • Rube: Mr. Plumber doesn't know that the downstairs toilet is the broken one. He only hears the sounds of a toilet flushing [pan to Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye playing upstairs] coming from upstairs.
  • Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye: [laughing and playing together]
  • [The plumber climbs up the stairs. The pets are scared as he opens the bathroom door.]
  • Ouchie and Pinkeye: [hide in Tinkle's lid]
  • Tinkle: [growls angrily at the plumber]
  • Mr. Plumber: This toilet isn't just broken. It's dangerous. [holds out a muzzle and puts it on Tinkle, wheeling him into the van]
  • Rube: Uh-oh, Mr. Plumber thought Tinkle was the broken toilet. He replaced him with a regular toilet and took Tinkle away. [crash, the family's car lands upside down] Are you with me?
  • Plumber: Toilet's all fixed! I'll send you the bill!
  • [The family waves from their car.]
  • Cecil: You're an inspiration!
  • Bunny: I love you!
  • Squidina: Thanks, Mr. Plumber!
  • [The plumber drives away with Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye in the back. Each of the family members enters the house by pushing the door a different way.]
  • Bunny: Patrick, dear, go upstairs and feed Tinkle. It's past his lunchtime.
  • Patrick: [laughs and grabs toilet paper from a cabinet, carries it upstairs, then screams] Everybody, come upstairs now!
  • Cecil: What's the hold up?
  • Bunny: Oh, no! What's wrong?
  • Squidina: Patrick, what is it?
  • [The Stars gasp when they see the toilet.]
  • Patrick: [pokes the toilet, which is full of toilet paper, with a brush] He won't eat. He won't bark. He won't bite. Did he turn blue? Tinkle is-- d-- d--
  • Squidina: Dainty?
  • Bunny: Delightful?
  • Cecil: Decalcified?
  • Patrick: Dead!
  • [The Stars gasp again and pray. Bunny starts to cry very loudly and floods the house.]
  • Bunny: [sobbing]
  • Rube: Oh, no. I wish I could tell them that Tinkle isn't really dead, but I'm just the narrator. I'm not supposed to get involved. Anyway, next scene!
  • [Bunny's tears come out of the house's window. Transition to a dump. Crows caw and the plumber's truck drives in.]
  • Tinkle: [nervous bark]
  • [The plumber takes Tinkle out of the van and throws him into the pile of broken toilets.]
  • Rube: Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye had never heard of a junkyard. [Ouchie and Pinkeye get out of Tinkle's lid] But they knew they needed to get out of there, pronto.
  • [The pile of junk they are on shakes. They jump down and a red eye appears in the pile. A giant worm rises up]
  • Rube: Yikes! That old junkyard worm didn't like to be disturbed when he was napping.
  • Junkyard worm: [roars]
  • Tinkle, Ouchie, and Pinkeye: [scream and run away]
  • Rube: And he meant to teach Tinkle and his noisy friends a lesson.
  • [The pets run away from the junkyard worm. It burrows into the ground and comes up underneath them. In slow-motion, it is about to eat them, but Pinkeye grabs onto Tinkle's lid and uses it to slide down the worm. They crash into the fence and huddle together as the worm advances on them. Tinkle swallows the worm's head as Pinkeye flushes Tinkle and Ouchie pokes the worm.]
  • Rube: They're giving that old junkyard worm a swirly.
  • Worm: [whimpering, crying, runs away]
  • Rube: That is one wimpy worm.
  • [The pets cheer. Tinkle hops towards the sun as Ouchie and Pinkeye jump on top of him.]
  • Rube: To find their way home, Tinkle would follow the sun. The uncredible journey had begun.
  • [The pets hop down the street. Some people run out of their way.]
  • Tinkle: [whistling]
  • [Pinkeye stops to look at something. Ouchie stops and looks too. Tinkle jumps on them, and the two come out of his lid. The camera cuts to show Trader Barg'n's Reef Market. The pets press against the window, looking at various foods: carrots for Pinkeye, sausage for Ouchie, and toilet paper for Tinkle.]
  • Rube: That junkyard rumble led to some rumblings in their tumblings.
  • [The pets lick their lips and rush into the store. The manager kicks them out.]
  • Manager: Shoo! [drops them outside with a grabber] No toilets or vermin allowed! [taps building] This is a food store!
  • [The pets come in with a disguise. Tinkle, as the head, is wearing a hat and trench coat. Ouchie and Pinkeye control him from beneath. His arms are a spatula and a toilet brush.]
  • Rube: Looks like our friends have come up with a plan to rustle up some vittles.
  • [The pets go around the store, get a shopping card, and push some food into it. They accidentally reveal themselves as the trench coat opens, then gasp and close it. The manager looks discomforted.]
  • Manager: That will be 12 bucks even, sir.
  • Tinkle: Huh? [pulls out his pockets, showing them to be empty]
  • [Tinkle points away and distracts the manager, who looks away. Tinkle knocks over the cart and grabs the food items.]
  • Manager: Aah! Halt! Thief! Stop that man in the trench coat!
  • [Some old people shopping notice, put on police hats, and approach Tinkle. Pinkeye throws a carrot at one and Ouchie throws a sausage at another. Tinkle sprays water at the third one. They escape the store.]
  • Rube: Pshew, they made it. And now, suppertime. So they ate a hearty meal and rested for a spell. [the pets are now fat and burp]
  • [Used toilet paper rolls transition to the pets, still in disguise, walking down the street.]
  • Rube: Our trio soon realized if they stayed in disguise, no one would know they were really just two animals and a toilet.
  • Policeman: Huh?
  • [A man with his hair on fire urgently grabs Tinkle.]
  • Man: Help! There's a baby in that building!
  • [A baby is crawling on a windowsill in a building on fire.]
  • Tinkle: Huh?
  • [Tinkle runs across the street. Two cars that crash into each other cause a live-action explosion. He combat rolls into the building and sprays water to extinguish the flames. He gasps and sees the baby, carrying it out on his lid. He puts his hands on his hips as everyone cheers. He delivers the baby to a woman, tips his hat, and jumps off. Perch runs in.]
  • Perch: Perch Perkins here. Tell us, how do you feel about that man's incredible rescue?
  • Woman: I never got a chance to thank him... or tell him, this isn't my baby.
  • Baby: [babbles into Perch's microphone]
  • [A live-action soap bar transitions to a jellyfish and a seahorse in the jungle.]
  • [Ouchie cuts through the jungle. Pinkeye has an explorer's hat and backpack. Tinkle is scratched up. The pets hop in a circle, noticing their footprints.]
  • Rube: Our heroes were so exhausted from saving babies that they lost their sense of direction. It was then they started to think they might never find their way home.
  • [The pets starts crying. Rube comes out from the jungle.]
  • Rube: Hiya, fellas. I know I'm not supposed to get involved, but I can't take it anymore! You're all just too tired to see it, but your house is right next door!
  • [They leave to the left. They dig up Gladys' flower garden, and she screams. They look at the house and prance around in front of it.]

  • Cecil: If you have some memories about Tinkle you want to share, please come up.
  • [Patrick, Bunny, and Squidina step up.]
  • Squidina: Tinkle's seat was never cold.
  • Patrick: He never got clogged!
  • Bunny: [still sobbing] And he never splashed back! [crying] Oh, you were perfect!
  • Paperboy: [steps up] When my dad was laid up in the hospital, Tinkle paid our bills for months. He was the best toilet who ever flushed! [cries]
  • [The audience cries and claps, except for GrandPat.]
  • GrandPat: It's still a toilet!
  • [The audience shush GrandPat. The mourners flush Tinkle's grave. Tinkle himself begins crying, right at GrandPat. GrandPat hands him a tissue as he blows his nose and continues crying and hugs Bunny. Squidina and Patrick join by hugging, crying, and sobbing. The trench coat falls down, revealing Pinkeye and Ouchie crying and sobbing too.]
  • Squidina: [notices the pets] Tinkle? [Patrick, Squidina, and Bunny see them]
  • Tinkle: Ah heh heh heh heh. [waves with his handle as he smiles]
  • Squidina: [happily] Tinkle! Oh, [hugs Tinkle] I knew that old toilet wasn't you! I just know it!
  • Bunny: [happily] Tinkle, my wittle commode! [hugs Tinkle]
  • Tinkle: [licks Bunny with his tongue and Bunny laughs]
  • Patrick: Tinkle? [smiles] What are you doing here? [rudely] You get back in your grave right now!
  • Tinkle: [jumps on Patrick and licks him happily as Patrick laughs]
  • Cecil: Attention, mourners. It seems that Tinkle is alive and well. So this funeral is officially canceled. [flushes, knocks the tombstone down and washes his hands with soap and water]
  • [The mourners are disappointed and walk away. Slappy throws his hat on the ground in frustration.]
  • Rube: [laughs] And so we come to the end of our uncredible journey. I hope y'all had fun today. I sure as heck did. And this funeral pie is amazing! My favorite, straw-burial. [the pets maul him for the pie] Ow! Ow! Hey, stop it! That's my pie!
