“It was so good at Lunch, We went back for supper !!” The food was great from start to finish. The Perch Tacos were AWESOME. Having never wanted to try a fish taco, I was brave , YUMMY. Some say no matter where, once you’ve slept on an island, there is nothing else quite like it. We want to think so too! Put-in-Bay, to us is home, and most of us who live on the island make it our focus to make your Ohio Vacation the best it can be.

Put-in-Bay In The Winter Months

While most of the state pauses thru the long winter, South Bass Island Residents are busy planning the upcoming seasons’ events. Booking entertainers, planning events, and expanding to meet the growing demand each year are just a few of the things that happen over the Winter. Fewer than 700 people make Put-in-Bay, Ohio, their home on a year-round basis.

In the long cold winter months, residents depend on local airplane service to get on and off the island after the ferry boats stop. Islanders must carefully plan for the lack of ferry service. Meat orders are placed, canned goods are stocked, and things we take for granted daily are forgone. There is no Mcdonald’s, Dominos Pizza, or Longhorn Steaks, and we like it that way!

Our gas station may open a few days a week, and the bank just one. But that’s just fine as we know just around the corner, thousands of you will return each year to enjoy the island.

When we thaw out, the birds return, the trees sprout new leaves, and we welcome a new season. Just about every year, there is something new at Put-in-Bay. It might be an attraction, restaurant, shop, hotel, or ferry boat. It’s always better than when you last saw it, and still worth another trip!

The Put-in-Bay Season

The first weekend in April, the Put-in-Bay Hotels open to receive guests, who come in droves. Birdwatching is especially popular this time of year, and birders see hundreds of species of birds migrating annually. The bars open with refreshed menus, a few new faces, and many of the same entertainers. Mike Mad Dog Adams has been performing here for over 40 years, and each year the crowd gets bigger!

For Seven fun-filled months, Put-in-Bay transforms into a vacation playland that offers something for everyone, regardless of age. The island is a safe community with a local police department, Modern EMS with Lifeflght Care, and a Fire Department. No stoplights, trains (well, other than a tour train), or highways to disturb the day. When was the last time you sat by the lake, and the only thing you heard was crickets?

Put-in-Bay has been nicknamed the “Key West of the North” and offers an exciting nightlife with live entertainment to satisfy all generations, young and old alike. Strolling Barbershop singers, bagpipers, and steel drums are just a few of the ats you will see!

Things To Do At Put-in-Bay

Rare is a place where there are so many attractions in such a small area. The 2.5 by 5-mile island packs an attractions menu that few places on earth can rival. From soaring high above the ground in a Parasail, Helipcoter, or Bi-Plane to being underground in one of our mystical and historical caves. The Perry Peace Memorial reaches over 300 feet above the ground with an elevator and observation deck. On a clear day, you can see the Toledo & Detriot Skylines while learning about the battle that shaped the United States as we know it today.

We discourage motor vehicles on the island; we don’t need them. Instead, we drive Golf Carts, and you can too! These specially equipped golf carts seat 2-4-6 & 8 people and are rented by the hour, day, or overnight. Put-in-Bay Golf Carts Should Be reserved online here : Our attractions don’t end with just a little adventure! Many of the Put-in-Bay Attractions incorporate learning into the experience (hey, the kids don’t have to know!), and we hear time and time again how these experiences have stuck with children for years. Many of our returning guests were here as children and still remember the experience vividly!

Getting To Put-in-Bay

Many people say half of the fun is getting here! We are an actual island, so you have to take a Put-in-Bay Ferry to get here! The Jet Express Ferry offers a narrated tour with comfortable inside and outside seating. The trip is a scant 20 minutes or so, depending on which ferry you take. These are large ocean-certified vessels inspected by the United States Coast Guard annually and generally offer a smooth, comfortable ride. You’ll leave your car on the mainland side; you won’t need it at Put-in-Bay.

Sailing, Swimming, hiking, and biking are convenient, and our trails are abundant. Our Lake Erie Islands Historical Society has an extensive collection of artifacts that show how island life has evolved over the years.

There are endless things to do on Put-in-Bay, which can be as simple as a stroll through town. Visit our stunning state parks, Perry International Peace Memorial, and lakeside pebble beaches on your journey. Spend the afternoon playing with the kids at the Put-in-Bay Resorts heated pool and swim-up bar! Rent jet skis and see the island from a boater’s perspective! There’s no shortage of unique experiences and family togetherness on the island. Once it gets close to lunchtime, check out the local Put-in-Bay restaurants! Let’s Not Forget The Shopping!

No, we don’t have a mall, but you will be reminded of a simpler time when the village square was filled with specialty shops. The excellent service levels at Put-in-Bay seem to be something lost in time on the mainland. Browse the storefronts. Many are packed with locally created goods. Our local “Candy Bar” pumps out homemade fudge by the pound in various colorful flavors. Their extensive candy selection often includes childhood favorites like Red Hots, Lemon Heads, and Pop Rocks. Freshly made hand-dipped ice cream is served in many locations on the island and is quite popular.

Many of the island restaurants also have gift shops where they sell their specialty sauces, clothing items, and popular food selections to go! Be sure to grab some Lobster Bisque for the trip home! It’s one of the island’s best sellers. Local craftsmen and women create artwork and jewelry, some made with locally sourced beach glass. Local wineries sell gift boxes loaded with their award-winning wines and grape juice. An excellent gift for a friend or family member who appreciates wine!

Put-in-Bay Dining!

We all have a little “Foodie” in us, and Put-in-Bay does not disappoint when it comes to great food. From barefoot casual to picnic, resort casual to fine dining, we’ve got you covered! On a warm summer day, the simplicity of an old-fashioned picnic has never been more accessible. Mother Nature has created some fantastic dining spots in our parks, nature trails, and shorelines. Many Put-in-Bay Restaurants will prepare your order to go for your enjoyment. In the center of town, De Rivera park has numerous picnic tables and even a few BBQ grills that you can cook out on with supplies from the local grocery.

Local Chefs have creative and delicious ways to serve up Lake Erie’s prized Yellow Perch and Walleye. A good steak always hits the spot, and we have plenty of them! Several of our Put-in-Bay Restaurants offer stunning waterfront dining with views of the shoreline, local harbor, and docks. While most of the restaurants are located in town, there are several hidden gems situated on the interior of the island, such as the Goat & Joe’s Bar. Sometimes, dining in the comfort of your hotel room or poolside is appealing. Everyone loves Pizza, and the Put-in-Bay Pizza Company delivers to all major hotels, resorts, and island rental homes. Our entertainment venus rivals any big city setting. Many of the entertainers you would see in surrounding major cities play their summer gigs at Put-in-Bay! The Beer Barrel Saloon is our largest venue, seating over 1200 people and home to the world’s longest bar. Nationally known touring acts are frequently seen there. There are over 30 places to enjoy an adult beverage, and all are within a 5-minute walk from each other.

Many of our nightlife hotspots are popular restaurants by day that convert to dancing and nighttime fun sometime near 9 pm. Late-night options include pizzas, sandwiches, and new 2020 Lesters Authentic Street Tacos in front of the Edgewater hotel on the main strip. What Are The Hours Of The Put-in-Bay Airport

Generally speaking, you have access to your plane 24 hours a day. The airport itself is not a manned tower. Takeoffs and landings are restricted as the runways are not lit. There is no published IFR approach into the Put-in-Bay Airport. Parking is available for a daily fee.

Is There Fuel At The Put-in-Bay Airport

No there is no fuel service. The closest fuel is Port Clinton (PCW) about 6 miles south of the Put-in-Bay Airport. Be sure to contact them in advance for fueling hours.

What Do I Need To Do To Bring My Boat To Put-In-Bay

If you are planning on bringing your boat to Put-in-Bay we suggest that you bring extra fenders and lines. Most all docks and marinas require rafting off of other boats as many as 4 deep. These extra lines and fenders will help keep your boat securely tied off. You should also take into consideration the same with a water hose and power cords.

Can I have Alcohol On My Boat At Put-in-Bay

Yes, you can. The docks themselves do not permit open containers but you may enjoy your beverages on your private boat. There are local stores that sell beer & wine. There is no liquor store on the island.

Where Is The Best Place To Get A Golf Cart If I Am On A Boat

Put-in-Bay Golf Carts is located across the park from the Public Docks & Marinas and services all public and private marinas. Reservations are strongly suggested and may be made by calling 419-285-7427 Ample parking along the docks is available.

Is There A Place To Purchase Boat Fuel At Put-in-Bay

Yes, the marina at the Boardwalk docks and restaurant complex has fuel service with Diesel and Gasoline.

Are There Public Boat Ramps At Put-in-Bay

Yes, there are several options for boat ramps. Between “C” and “B” dock there is a public ramp free of charge. There is one at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club for a small fee. There is one at the Soth Bass Island State Park along with ample boat trailer parking.

Is There Fresh Water On The Docks

Yes, All of our docks have a freshwater connection. Boaters are advised to bring their own hoses and fitting to make the connection. Connections are shared to fill holding tanks and then disconnected. A 50 to 75-foot hose is generally sufficient.

Is There Electric Service For Boats On The Docks

Yes, there is. Various levels of amperage are available and included in your dockage rates. Longer shore power cords are favorable as you may be a short distance from the closest connection.

Can I Make A Reservation For A Boat Dock at Put-in-Bay

The Public Docks at Put-in-Bay are on a first-come-first-served basis. If you are planning on coming on a weekend, the earlier you get to Put-in-Bay, the more likely you are to get a dock. The privately-owned docks take reservations, and some offer memberships granting priority dockage. Mooring balls in the harbor are also an option. There is a water taxi that brings boaters to and from their boat to the shore.

How Do I Reserve A Golf Cart For Put-in-Bay

Putinbaygolfcarts.com website allows and encourages advance reservations. They feature the largest and newest fleet of rentals at Put-in-Bay. Travelers are encouraged to book early as supplies are limited and they often run out. Golf Carts are available to rent in two, four, six and eight-person seating. Carts are rented daily and overnight. Golf Carts are treated as cars and all licenses and rules apply.

When getting off the ferry, you may select any taxi you wish and are not required to use the one in the front. The nicer cabs are quite easy to see.

How Much Does It Cost To Go To The Top Of Perry’s Monument

The fee is $10 per adult (16 years of age and older)for a day pass to go to the top of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Children under 15 are free when accompanied by an adult. The monument is part of the National Park Service. NPS passes such as the Annual Pass and Season Pass are accepted here.

Where Can I Find An ATM At Put-in-Bay

There is an ATM located on the main strip called Delaware Avenue in front of the Edgewater Hotel and the Put-in-Bay Golf Car Rental. There is also an ATM in the lobby of the Put-in-Bay Resort. Both are accessible 24 hours a day in season.

No this is not permitted. The State of Ohio Fire Marshall sets occupancy limits for all hotels and rentals and owners are not permitted to exceed those limits under any circumstances. Always be sure to book enough rooms for your group as their will rarely be anything left to book last minute. All locations are strict bout the enforcement of these rules. If a room at a Put-in-Bay hotel is advertised as a six-person suite, then it is a six-person maximum

How Do I Get From The Ferry To My Hotel

The best way to get to your hotel from the ferry dock is to rent a golf cart or take a taxi. When you get off the ferry you will generally see several taxis waiting to transport visitors to their Put-in-Bay Hotel or Resort. If you decide to bring a car (not recommended) many hotels have a limited number of parking spots. Keep in mind you may wait as long as three hours each way to get a car on or off the island.

There are plenty of islands in Ohio even if this Midwest state is not your first thought for an island getaway.

There are so many things to do in Ohio and Ohio has 312 miles of Lake Erie shoreline. There are a number of islands sprinkled throughout this Great Lake that belongs to Ohio.

If you are looking for a unique nature getaway in Ohio , then check out some of these islands on Lake Erie for a fun time.

From cute, fishing towns to historic sites to wildlife refuges, these islands in Ohio have something for every type of traveler to enjoy.

The more developed islands are great for a family vacation or romantic getaway. You can explore small towns and wineries, chill at beaches , go shopping, or spend time out on the water.

On the other hand, some of the islands have been left open to nature and wildlife. These islands of Ohio are great for photography, birdwatching, and fishing.

A few of these Lake Erie islands are completely inaccessible unless under special circumstances. Even so, they are fun to learn about.

Now, let’s look at some of these Ohio islands in more detail!

South Bass Island

South Bass Island is probably the most famous islands in Ohio and is even known as the “Key West of Lake Erie.”

This is where you will find the charming town of Put-In-Bay, with so many charming things to do This is a popular vacation destination for both tourists and locals.

There are so many historic and fun things to do in Put-In-Bay and the rest of the island.

Head 352 feet into the air for amazing views from atop Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, which honors those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

It costs $10 to ride the elevator to the top of the world’s tallest Doric column.

Nature lovers will want to explore South Bass Island State Park or visit the amazing Butterfly House where there are over fifty species of butterflies.

Chocolate lovers or anyone traveling with kids will want o stop by the Chocolate Cafe and Museum.

The 45-minute tour of the museum will teach you about the history of chocolate, and you will see chocolate sculptures.

The cafe will make your mouth water with a menu of milkshakes, gelato, pastries, and more!

Visit the Lake Erie Island Historical Museum and the South Bass Island Lighthouse to learn more about the region’s history and culture.

To get to South Bass Island, you can take one of two ferries. The Miller Ferry is an 18-minute ride from Catawba Island to the southern tip of the island.

Take this ferry if you want to bring a vehicle. The Jet Express leaves from Port Clinton and takes about 35 minutes to arrive in downtown Put-in-Bay.

Middle Bass Island

Middle Bass Island is just north of South Bass and can be reached on the same Miller Ferry line. It is a scenic, 40-minute ride.

This island in Ohio was first visited by French explorer, Robert La Salle, in 1679, and was known as the Isle des Fleurs because of all the wildflowers.

In 1856, the Germans took over and began to cultivate grapes. Today, you can visit the old Lonz Winery. It is now a museum.

The winery is found within Middle Bass Island State Park, and it is not the only attraction here. You can rent bicycles, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore the water and island.

The East Point Nature Preserve is accessible only by kayak along the Lake Erie Islands Water Trail. This untouched, natural area is perfect for birdwatching.

North Bass Island

North Bass Island, also known as Isle St. George, is the last of the Bass Islands and is the least developed.

North Bass Island State Park is a secluded place for fishing, birdwatching, hiking, and primitive camping in Ohio . You’ll need a permit to camp.

For a really unique Ohio vacation , rent the Lake House at the state park. This lodge can sleep up to twelve people and features a full kitchen, large-screen TVs, and even wifi. An ATV is also provided so you can get around the island.

The only way to get to this Ohio island is by plane or private boat. There is a small airstrip on the island.

Kelleys Island Is One Of The Interesting Islands In Ohio

Kelleys Island is the largest of Ohio’s islands at 4.41 square miles. The island went through many name changes before settling on Kelleys Island in 1840 when the brothers Datus and Irad Kelley bought most of the island. They worked to quarry the limestone here.

Kelleys Island has unique geological features, pretty nature spots, and historic sites that make it one of the best Ohio island destinations.

Like many of the other islands in Ohio, this island was used for wine production and there are still a few wineries where you can get a drink. The Monarch Winery and Butterfly Box is a unique place to visit with a greenhouse you can walk through and a monarch butterfly farm.

Head to Kelleys Island State Park to see something you can see nowhere else in the world.

The Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve features the largest accessible glacier grooves in the world. They are 400 feet long, 35 feet wide, and 10 feet deep. You can marvel at the power of glaciers.

This state park also has kayak rentals, a swim beach, Ohio hiking trails , and a campground.

History buffs will want to visit the Inscription Rock Petroglyphs. This slab of limestone was discovered in 1833 and the carvings are thought to have been made by Pre-Columbian peoples.

There are a couple of ways to get to Kelleys Island. You can take the 20-minute Kelleys Island Ferry from Marblehead which allows vehicles and bikes onboard.

The Jet Express leaves from the Sandusky dock and takes about 20 minutes.

Johnson’s Island

Johnson’s Island is one of the best islands in Ohio to visit for history lovers. This 300-acre island in Sandusky Bay is also easily accessible since you can drive the causeway to get there.

In 1891, the island became a prisoner of war camp for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. More than 15,000 men were imprisoned here during that time.

The camp was abandoned after the war, and in 1990, the island became a National Historic Landmark.

Today, you can visit the Confederate Cemetery where over two hundred prisoners were buried. Archaeological digs take place on the island as well.

Johnson’s Island makes for a great day trip from Sandusky since the drive only takes about a half-hour.

Whiskey Island Is One Of The Best Islands In Ohio To Visit

Whiskey Island is another easily accessible islands in Ohio. This small island is found where the mouth of the Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie in Cleveland . It is not technically an island, but rather a peninsula.

Half of the island is industrial and the other half holds a marina and a public park. Wendy Park is a great hangout spot to get away from the noise of Cleveland.

The park features sand volleyball, picnic tables, and a fishing pier. It is a great place for kayaking since it is protected by the breakwater. It is also a great place for birdwatching and seeing migrating monarch butterflies in during the fall in the Midwest .

Check out the historic coast guard station for great views of the harbor and city skyline. You can walk along the Whiskey Island Connector Trail which will lead you along the waterfront to Edgewater Park.

Catawba Island

Catawba Island is another peninsula in Ohio that pretends to be an island. While it is now barely connected to the mainland, historically, it actually was once an island!

This former island in Ohio is a great place to set up a base for a vacation in Northern Ohio. There are plenty of parks to explore and small towns vibes to soak in.

Head to Catawba Island State Park for an awesome beach day on the lake. You can swim, fish, or get out on the water in a canoe or kayak. In winter, you can enjoy ice skate or ice fish.

The area is known for its craft breweries, wineries, and peach orchards, perfect if you are looking for romantic things to do on islands in the Great Lakes.

If you like learning about history, visit the Catawba Island Historical Society Museum.

Gibraltar Island Is A Tiny Island In Ohio

Gibraltar Island is a small Ohio island found just off the coast of Put-In-Bay and is known as the “Gem of Lake Erie.” Even though this island in Ohio is only 6.55 acres, there are a lot of things to see here.

The island is closed to the public except in the summer when you can book a tour run by Ohio State University. On the island, you will find a collection of historic buildings, geological sites, and a research lab.

Cooke Castle is a Victorian-Gothic mansion that dates back to 1865. The inside is not open to the public, but you can admire the architecture from the outside. The island also has a number of historic cottages and more glacial grooves.

The tours are $10 per person plus $6 for the water taxi.

Rattlesnake Island Is One Of The Mysterious Islands In Ohio

Rattlesnake Island is named after the rattlesnakes that allegedly once lived there. The snakes are gone now, though.

This Ohio island changed hands a few times but mostly remained undeveloped until the 1990s.

Today, the island is home to the Rattlesnake Island Club. This private club is only open to members and their guests.

Because of the eliteness of this island in Ohio, and security rerouting people, rumors abound.

But instead of mob activity, members most likely only come to enjoy the pools, racket ball court, golf course, and fine dining.

West Sister Island

The West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of the islands in Ohio that is no longer open to the public.

Today it is used for research purposes only. It is recognized as an Important Bird Area and is a crucial nesting habitat for herons and egrets.

Even though you cannot visit it, it does have an interesting history to learn about.

If you happen to pass by on a boat, you might see the West Sister Island Lighthouse.

This 55-foot structure was built in 1848 and is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It is still in operation today.

During Prohibition, bootleggers coming from Canada would stop here along the way and use the thick trees to hide from authorities. If they were spotted, they would dump their bottles overboard.

According to legend, these bottles can still be found littered around the island.

Packing List For Traveling To The Islands In Ohio

If you will be traveling, either by plane or by car to the Midwest, here are some tips on how to pack lightly.

Sandusky Ohio: A Guide to Visiting the Shores, Islands, and Cedar Point!

Jess and I have explored a great many parts of her home state of Ohio in the United States. We’ve now visited nearly every corner of the state and have seen a lot (including all the best waterfalls in Ohio !), and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you.

In today’s post, I want to share with you a suggested itinerary for visiting one of the more popular parts of the state – the Lake Erie Shores and Islands, which we were invited to visit by the Shores and Islands tourism board on one of our trips to Ohio.

Centred around the town of Sandusky on the northern edge of the state by Lake Erie, the Shores and Islands offers everything from a world famous amusement park through fine dining and island exploration.

This three day itinerary we’ve put together would be perfect for a long weekend or just a three-day midweek break. You can do it in any order you like of course – although we’d suggest setting it up so you visit Cedar Point on a less busy day, so try to avoid weekends or holidays if you can. Also be aware that school holiday periods will be busier in general.

Now, let’s take a look at our suggestions for visiting Sandusky Ohio and surrounds over three days. This includes a detailed guide to what to do in Sandusky, what to do on the shores and islands, and a guide to getting the most out of your Cedar Point visit.

Day One – Explore Sandusky Ohio

Our first day has you exploring the town of Sandusky, where there is plenty to occupy you. Here were some of our favourite things to do in Sandusky and surrounds to give you some ideas for your first day.

What to Do in Sandusky Ohio

1. walk around sandusky historical downtown.

Established in 1818, the town of Sandusky has plenty of old buildings and pretty streets to occupy your time with a wander, as well as a number of cafes and restaurants where you can stop in to refresh and revive.

If you’re interested in a detailed walking tour, the Erie County Historical Society website has an excellent suggested walking tour of Sandusky with a number of stopping points that you should definitely check out.

2. Visit the Merry Go Round Museum

If you’re a lover of old-time amusement park rides, then a visit to the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky is a must.

Here you’ll find everything you ever wanted to know about carousels, including a number of hand carved wooden figurines and a full, working, original 1939 Herschel carousel that you can take a ride on.

The museum is also home to a number of master carvers who both create and restore carousel animals, and you’ll learn all about their historically accurate processes when you take the tour.

3. Visit the Maritime Museum

If you’re interested in learning all about Sandusky’s Maritime history, then you should definitely include a visit to the Sandusky Maritime Museum on your itinerary.

The museum houses all sorts of exhibits about the fishing, boating and shipping activities on Lake Erie, as well as having information on boat-building and wetlands. There’s even an exhibit about Sandusky’s role in the Underground Railroad.

4. Head to the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum

A short drive south of Sandusky will take you to the small town of Milan, which is famous as being the birthplace of the inventor Thomas Edison.

Today, you can visit the home where Edison was born, the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum and learn all about the early life of the man who invented hundreds of things we take for granted today – everything from lightbulbs to phonographs!

The museum has to be visited as part of a tour, and as well as touring the house where Edison was born and raised, you’ll see examples of Edison’s early inventions, some of his documents, and family mementos.

5. Visit the Follett House Museum

To learn all about the history of Sandusky and surrounds, look no further than Follett House Museum . Here you’ll find everything you ever wanted to know about this area, from before the War of 1812, through to the Civil War and right up to the present day.

Located in Follett House (a National Historic Landmark) and spanning four floors, you’ll find everything here from information on Presidential visits through to the industries that have driven Sandusky through the years, told through documents, photographs, maps, and more.

Day Two – Visit the Islands

One of the wonderful things about this part of Ohio is the huge expanse of Lake Erie that forms the northern border of the state. And sitting in Lake Erie are a number of islands, which are an easy boat ride from Sandusky using the Jet Express ferry service – which was exactly what we did.

We spent a day exploring two of the islands, Kelleys Island and South Bass Island, which is usually referred to as Put-in-Bay, the name of the main town on the island.

You can definitely do both of these islands in one day, although there’s also more than enough to do on each island to fill a day, so it’s really up to you. In our opinion, Kelleys Island is the more laid back of the two islands, and Put-in-Bay is where you’ll want to head if you’re looking for a party.

Here’s what we got up to on each island to give you some itinerary suggestions. Let’s start with:

What to Do on Kelleys Island

1. rent a golf cart.

On both Kelleys Island and South Bass Island we rented a golf cart. There are very few cars on either island, and if you want to do some sight-seeing then we highly recommend either a golf cart or a bicycle – both of which can be hired near the ferry ports. On Kelleys Island we used Portside Marina , and at Put in Bay we were actually lent a golf cart by the local tourism office. However, there are a number of operators so you’ll be able to easily find one!

Golf Carts are super easy to drive and they’re road legal. There’s not much traffic, and you’ll be able to get from location to location much more quickly when using a gold cart. Do be aware though that the rules of the road do apply when driving a golf cart, and in particular the drinking and driving limit is still enforced for golf cart drivers, so you’ll still need a designated driver!

2. Visit the Glacial Grooves

A remarkable natural feature, these rock grooves were formed by the movement of ice across the limestone around 20,000 years ago. They’re found around a mile and a half north of the main town on the island (you’ll appreciate that golf cart), and you can walk all around the grooves on the well marked trail, which also has information signposts.

These grooves are in fact the largest and most accessible of their kind anywhere in the world, and as they’re so easy to get to we definitely encourage you to check them out. It’s hard not to be impressed by the power of ice against rock when you see them first hand!

3. Take a Hike

Nearly a quarter of Kelleys Island is given over to Kelley’s Island State Park, which covers 677 acres. In those acres, which include both lakefront and forested interior, you’ll find six miles of hiking trails which are perfect if you’re looking to stretch your legs.

The island is pretty flat, so you shouldn’t tire yourself out, but this is a lovely and peaceful way to get back to nature and relax.

4. Marvel at the architecture

There are numerous historical properties on Kelleys Island, and in fact the entire island is on the national register of historic places. Just wander along Division Street, and you‘ll come to the Old Stone Church and Estees School, with many more historic homes and businesses found throughout the island.

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the island, you can visit the Old Stone Church, which is now home to the Kelley’s Island Historical Association. You can also pick up the Kelley’s Island Tour guide, prepared by this association, which is available at various gift shops on the island.

5. Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

If you’re feeling a bit more active, one good option is to hire kayaks and take to the waters. Kayak’s can be hired on State Park Beach, which is just a short walk from the Glacial Grooves. They also offer stand up paddle board rentals.

If you’re after something a bit more exciting than Kayaking, you will probably want to head to South Bass island, where you’ll find numerous water activities including jet-skiing.

6. Enjoy the beach

If you’re not feeling active, no worries. You can just relax on the beach instead. Kelley’s Island State Park beach is the main public beach on the island – there are other beaches but they are privately owned so off-limits to visitors without specific permission.

Once you’ll all done with sight-seeing (there’s lots more to do on Kelleys Island – see their official website for more ideas), you will either hop on the boat home, or, if you’re going to fit both islands into the same day, take the boat across to South Bass Island and continue the adventure!

What to Do on Put-in-Bay / South Bass Island

1. sample the local fish.

If you’re doing this itinerary to include both islands in one day, then you might find yourself getting hungry at this point. We recommend you satisfy your hunger with some of the local fish. As you wander around the various eateries, you’ll probably notice Lake Erie Perch and other local catches being advertised.

This is a freshwater fish, officially known as Yellow Perch, and is most commonly served breaded and fried in a sandwich with various accompaniments. Not to be missed.

2. Visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

Lake Erie, and its islands, were the site of a major naval battle during the War of 1812, between the United States and the British. Despite the name of the War, the battle itself took place on September 10th, 1813, and involved six British ships and nine American ships. Despite lesser numbers, the British had the advantage due to having much longer range guns on their ships.

The battle itself was fierce and brutal, with losses on both sides. However, the American side prevailed, and managed to capture six of the nine British vessels, with the remaining boats either sunk or damaged beyond repair. If you’re interested, you can read a full depiction of the battle itself here .

In Put-in-Bay, you can visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. This consists of a 352ft high monument, as well as a visitor centre, where you can learn all about the battle of Lake Erie, as well as Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, commander of the US ships during the battle, and for whom the memorial is named.

There are also often talks and demonstrations here and we watched a fun talk about the war on the lawn outside the visitor center which included a musket firing demonstration.

The memorial itself celebrates the long peace that has existed between the US, Canada, and Britain, and is symbolically located five miles from the longest undefended border in the world. It was definitely a highlight of our visit to Put-in-Bay, and we highly recommend you stop by.

3. Go Wine Tasting

Ohio has been producing wine since the 19th century, and for a time was the leading wine producer in the United States. After the American Civil War though, and following a number of crop-disease outbreaks, wine production had virtually died out. It has however had a resurgence, and the German immigrants who moved to the islands of Lake Erie at the turn of the 20th century certainly helped Ohio’s wine production renaissance.

With this in mind, we feel that no visit to the Lake Erie islands would be complete without taking in a tour of the vineyards and a spot of wine tasting. There aren’t quite as many vineyards as you would have found a hundred years ago, however excellent wine is still produced on the islands, and you can sample the produce at both Heineman’s Winery , which is a very popular spot, or in town at the Put-In-Bay Winery .

Both locations offer wine tastings for reasonable prices, and Put-in-Bay winery also includes a tour of the property and estate during the tasting.

4. Visit the Crystal cave

It’s not just enormous bars that are record breakers on South Bass Island. If you visit the Crystal Cave , part of Heineman’s Winery , you’ll be able to step inside the world’s largest geode!

This geode was discovered in 1897, when workers at the winery were digging a well in order to water the vineyard. Found 35ft below ground and around 12,000 years old, the Crystal Cave is in fact one giant geode that you can step inside.

Since it’s discoverery it has been a popular attraction for visitors to the area, and you can combine a bit of wine tasting with a tour. The income from visitors visiting the cave has even helped the winery survive when times were harder, such as during Prohibition!

5. Ride Kimberly’s Carousel

Jess’s favourite ride at every fairground we visit is always the Carousel, and Put-In-Bay is home to a gorgeous original 1917 Herschel carousel with wooden animals – everything from the classic horse through to chickens, pigs, roosters, and, of course – a Perch!

Rides are excellent value and are a lovely way to experience a bit of nostalgia for when fairground rides were somewhat more laid back.

6. Visit the Aquatic Visitors Centre

Last on our list of fun things to do in Put-in-Bay and South Bass Island would be a visit to the Aquatic Visitors Centre .

Operated by the Ohio Division and Wildlife, this building was once home to the state hatchery, and countless millions of Lake Erie fish were hatched and raised to a viable size here.

Today, the centre serves as a knowledge centre where you can learn all about the marine life living in Lake Erie and around the islands. It also has fishing gear you can borrow, free to children under the age of 16, which makes it a lot of fun to visit for the whole family. Definitely worth checking out when visiting Put-in-Bay!

7. Drink at the longest bar in the world

One thing that Put-in-Bay is definitely known for is having a good party scene. And what better way to start of your party then with a drink at the bar which hold the Guinness World Record for having the longest continuous permanent bar in the world?

With 405 feet of bar surface to choose from, you shouldn’t have too much difficulty finding a spot to get served at the Beer Barrel Saloon. And with plenty of food and drink to choose from, we’re sure you’ll keep yourself entertained for a while. There are several other popular bars within walking distance and you won’t have any trouble finding a place to drink.

And that summarises some of our favourite activities on Kelley’s Island and South Bass Island! There is plenty more to do than the list above, and you could easily spend a weekend or more on either island by itself. But we’re heading back to the shore to relax now, before a fun filled day on our third and final day!

Day Three – Cedar Point!

Our last day in the Sandusky area has you going to Cedar Point – one of the world’s most famous amusement parks! Cedar Point has more rides than any other amusement park in the world, which includes no less than 16 roller coasters. It won best amusement park in the world for 16 consecutive years running, and holds all sorts of records for its rides.

In business since 1870, Cedar Point really has something for everyone. Jess isn’t a huge fan of the really big rides, but we found plenty to do for both of us when we visited.

Naturally I did go and experience some of the biggest rides in the park, with my favourite being Millennium Force, which when it opened was the world’s highest and fastest. Of course, records like this tend to get broken very quickly as parks try to outdo each other, but the ride is still a real thrill.

Beyond the roller-coasters, as I mentioned before, there’s really something here for everyone. From water rides to a beach, a petting farm, glass blowing demonstrations, an award-winning dedicated kids area with plenty of smaller rides, live entertainment, as well as restaurants, bars and even face-painting, you won’t find it hard to stay entertained all day. Jess really loved visiting the older part of the park, the classic rides, and learning about its history.

The beach is accessible from the park although is not on the park grounds, so if you visit the park and want to also go to the beach you need to get a re-entry stamp on your hand. It’s also worth remembering that the park has a fun evening schedule on the beach, including beach games, music and a fireworks finale, which lasts from 6pm to park closing. See more on that here .

Our main advice for visiting Cedar Point is to try and visit on a quieter, weekday outside of holidays, and to arrive as early as the park opens. That way you will be able to experience some of the bigger rides before the queues start to build up.

Alternatively, you could invest in a fast pass, although these are relatively expensive, so really only worth it if you want to ride the biggest rides multiple times, or if it’s a particularly busy day.

In addition, the larger rides, especially the roller coasters, can close for safety reasons due to rain and bad weather. Occasionally they also close for maintenance. So do check the weather forecast before you go. You can also download the Cedar Point Mobile App for live information on ride status and queue times.

When to Visit the Sandusky Shores and Islands

We’d suggest that Sandusky and surrounds are best visited when the weather is warm and sunny – so many of the attractions are outdoors, and you’ll find that more is open over the summer months. Northern Ohio typically has very cold winters, and many of the attractions in this post, especially on the islands, won’t be open in the Winter months.

Overall, either summer, late spring or early fall are good times to visit. Early fall and late spring will be a little less busy than the summer months, although as this is a popular part of the state, it can be busy throughout, and accommodation can book up a long time in advance, especially on weekends and holidays. Late June through to late August are going to be busiest due to school holidays and better weather.

Where to Stay When Visiting the Sandusky Shores and Islands

There are a lot of accommodation options in the area, including in downtown Sandusky , on the islands themselves and even at Cedar Point .

Depending on what your priorities are for your stay, you will want to locate yourself appropriately. If you’re super keen on visiting Cedar Point for example, you might want to consider being as close to the park as possible to maximise your time there, and also to save on the car parking fees. It’s also worth remembering that some hotels have special packages that include Cedar Point.

If you’d prefer to spend more time exploring the islands, then finding a hotel on one of the islands themselves is going to be your best option.

Do be aware that despite the availability of lodging, the popularity of this area means that prices are a little higher than other parts of the state, and budget accommodation in particular is hard to come by. This is particularly true during the peak summer months and over holidays.

If budget is a main concern, do take a look at some of the nearby towns, including Huron , and the further out Vermilion .

We actually stayed at a vacation rental in Vermilion and it was only around a thirty minute drive to all the attractions we visited, including Cedar Point.

As an FYI , Miller’s Ferry in Catabwa offers much cheaper ferry service, along with free parking, to Put In Bay than Jet Express. It’s located 9 miles from Port Clinton, and 18 miles from Sandusky. In addition, Miller’s is able to carry your car, whereas Jet Express is strictly for passengers. For 2019 An adult round trip from Port Clinton to PIB is $34. Round trip for an adult on Miller’s is $15.

Island for sale. Wolfe family retreat on Ohio's Buckeye Lake hits market for $5.75 million

The Wolfe family, former owners of The Columbus Dispatch, are selling "Journal Island" on Buckeye Lake, the first time the property has come on the market in more than a century.

One of the largest inhabited islands on the lake, at more than 6 acres, the site for decades hosted power brokers and regular lake gatherings on its immaculately groomed grounds.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for someone, for a family to create a legacy, to create memories," said Brian Kemp, the Keller Williams Capital Partners agent listing the property for $5.75 million . "Every time you leave there, you just pinch yourself."

Kemp said he believes the listing is the highest-priced residential listing in the lake's history. He said the island has been owned since the early 1900s by the Wolfe family, who built a complex of buildings on the island over the decades.

The island includes a main house, a guest house, a pavilion entertainment building, a theater building that can also accommodate guests, two boat houses and several storage sheds.

The property also includes 5 acres on the south shore of the mainland with a parking lot, boat launch, dock and two-car garage.

"It's easy and convenient to entertain for a family or for many, the way the parking is situated and the ease of faring people back and forth from the mainland to the island," Kemp said.

The island offers a landscaped retreat, with walking trails through the trees or along the shore, a bridge-covered stream, a stone pavilion next to a waterfall, and multiple seating areas offering 360-degree lake views.

"The way it's laid out and maintained, it's luxury but also it's the ultimate in privacy — just to be on an island, you don't feel like you're in a fish bowl," Kemp said. "With the walking trails, gardens and waterfalls, it's stunning."

The one-and-a-half-story main house, about 5,500-square feet, includes six bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. The home includes a sunroom, an eat-in kitchen with an island, a dining room, living room, walk-in pantry and first-floor laundry. The home has two primary suites, one on the first floor and one on the second.

The older guest house, about 925 square feet, includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, a sitting room and a kitchenette.

Next to the pool is the "pavilion" building which includes a bar and entertaining room, full bathroom and changing rooms for the pool.

The "Journal Island Theater" features a large-screen tv, kitchenette, full bathroom and a sitting area with a fold-out sofa that could also double as a guest house, Kemp said.

"There are also several storage buildings for equipment, lawn gear, golf carts, everything you'd need," he said.

Kemp said the property could be sold as a turnkey home with furnishings if buyers are interested.

Journal Island is among 21 islands on the lake, 18 of which include homes, according to the Buckeye Lake Historical Society . The Wolfes are among several prominent Columbus residents, including Wendy's founder Dave Thomas , who at one time have owned homes on Buckeye Lake islands.
