Steps to Becoming a Travel Nurse

A travel nurse must meet the same educational and clinical requirements as all registered nurses (RNs). You must first earn an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Once you earn your degree, you need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and acquire your state nursing license. Because employers expect travel nurses to immediately begin working, travel nurse staffing agencies typically look for applicants with at least one year of clinical experience. Specializations and certifications can give you an advantage.

Earn an ADN or BSN Degree From an Accredited Program.

Travel nurses must earn an ADN or a BSN to qualify for RN licensure. An ADN offers the fastest pathway to an RN nursing career. However, a BSN, which typically takes four years to complete, provides graduates with a higher level of training and clinical experience, leading to broader employment opportunities. The major travel nurse staffing agencies and large healthcare systems prefer to hire RNs with a BSN degree.

Pass the NCLEX Exam to Receive RN Licensure.

You need to pass the National Council Licensure Exam for RNs (NCLEX-RN) to earn an RN license. This computer-adaptive test takes up to six hours and covers nursing practice, conditions and treatments, how the healthcare system works, legal and ethical issues, and patient communication and education.

Gain Clinical Nursing Experience.

The more clinical experience you have, the more likely you will find a placement. Most agencies only consider applicants with a minimum of one year of experience. However, some healthcare contracts require two years or more of clinical experience. Before working with a travel nurse agency, it is important to research its reputation. When evaluating agencies, you should compare if the contracts they offer meet your expectations about available locations, types of assignments, salary and benefits, and travel and housing arrangements.

Begin Your First Travel Nursing Assignment.

Because travel nurses work in multiple settings with varied patient populations , duties and responsibilities differ for each new assignment. In most cases, you will receive little on-the-job training. Depending on the employer, your first shift may begin with a full orientation or just a brief introduction to the facility’s procedures and policies. You may be paired with a nurse for your first few days, but then you will be expected to work independently soon after.

While some travel staffing agencies handle housing arrangements to help you settle into your new environment, you may decide to find your own accommodations to save on living expenses.

Travel Nurse Education

Different employers and positions have different travel nurse requirements. Generally, it takes at least two years to earn an ADN, the minimum requirement to become an RN.

If the state where you earned your initial RN license participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), you do not need to apply for another license to work in any other NLC state. However, not all states are NLC members . If your intended travel nurse assignment is located in a non-NLC state, you must apply for a license in that specific state before starting your contract. Some states have expedited processes for temporary licenses, and certain staffing agencies can assist you with the application process.

Maintaining an active license as a travel nurse is no different than for other RNs. You need to renew your RN license periodically, meeting the specific requirements for contact hours and continuing education units in your home state. If you are working in a non-NLC state, you must meet the renewal requirements for that jurisdiction.

Travel Nursing Certification and Specialization

RNs often choose to earn specialty nurse certifications in a variety of areas, including emergency care, pediatrics, obstetrics, and infection control. While earning a certification may not be required for a certain position, a specialization helps distinguish you from other job applicants and may boost your salary.

According to a 2019 travel nurse compensation report , the demand for travel nurses is highest for those with specializations in ICU, medical-surgical, operating room, and emergency room nursing. ICU nurses, the most in-demand travel nurse specialty, accounts for 16.5% of all travel nurses. Healthcare employers and staffing agencies often look for travel nurses with specialties in particular patient populations, including neonatal nursing and pediatrics, or those with experience in specific types of services, such as emergency and critical care nursing.

Travel nurses fill temporary assignments wherever nurses are needed. They may find placements in hospitals and clinics facing nursing shortages, community health facilities, and healthcare organizations in the U.S. and abroad that must respond to public health crises, disease outbreaks, and other medical emergencies. The average travel nurse contract lasts between 13 and 26 weeks, but hours and shifts vary widely depending on the assignment.

Travel nurse salaries also vary by setting, location, and specialization. According to Vivian , a major healthcare hiring service, the average weekly pay for travel nurses is $2,118, or $44.79 an hour, compared to $42.80 per hour for RNs overall, as noted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics . However, earnings can range from $458 weekly for the lowest-paid travel nurses to $6,419 for the top earners, and some travel nurses may be given a housing/relocation stipend.

Although working as a travel nurse has many benefits, there are some potential downsides. Travel nurses may be required to complete onboarding for each new contract they begin, even if they have already previously worked at a facility. This process can require time-consuming steps, such as providing proof of vaccination, fingerprinting, and documentation of your medical history, which can delay your start date.

Travel nurses are registered nurses (RN) who work in a non-permanent or temporary nursing role by filling gaps in staffing. Travel nurses typically work for staffing agencies that contract with individual healthcare facilities and companies. Travel nurses can work in any typical nursing setting, from inpatient to outpatient setting; however, bedside inpatient nursing is the most common.

You'll need an active RN license and 1-2 years of bedside nursing experience to be a travel nurse. The specific steps for how to become a travel nurse are as follows:

Step 1: Graduate From an Accredited Nursing Program 

Before you can become a travel nurse, you will need to attend an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) nursing program to begin the process of becoming a registered nurse.  

Step 2: Pass the NCLEX and Register for State Licensure 

Take and pass the NCLEX and register for a nursing license in either your home state or the state where you will be working your first nursing job. 

Step 3: Gain Relevant Bedside Nursing Experience 

Most travel agencies require a minimum of one to two years of relevant bedside experience before you can begin traveling.  

Tip: Travel nurses get VERY little orientation for each contract, so having a solid foundation and skill set is imperative to your success.  

Step 4: Obtain Advanced Specialty Certifications 

While not a requirement, additional nursing certifications will make you more marketable to not only nursing staffing agencies but also healthcare systems.  

TIP: Think about CCRN and CWOR-type specialty nursing certifications. Basic certifications such as BLS, ALCS, and PALS are often job requirements and will not make you stand out or seem more desirable to employers.   

Step 5: Communicate With Nurse Staffing Agencies 

This can often be tricky, especially with new travel nurses, and may take some trial and error. Think about where you want to travel, what kind of unit and shift you are interested in, and your minimum pay requirements. 

Reach out to several agencies and recruiters to determine the one that best meets your needs. Remember, it’s okay to work with multiple staffing agencies.  

TIP: Some agencies will hold exclusive contracts with specific healthcare organizations, so you might have to work with that agency/recruiter on a specific contract. 

Step 6: Sign Your Travel Nurse Contract! 

Travel nurse contracts are lengthy and can be wordy. Things can be missed or misinterpreted. If you have ANY questions, ask for clarification and MAKE SURE IT’S IN THE CONTRACT. For example, if your recruiter tells you to work out a vacation request with the nurse manager/scheduler and it is not in your formal contract with the hospital, it does not have to be honored.  

TIP: Before signing your contract, have a friend, family member, or a trusted coworker look over it to double-check for anything you might have missed. Every detail matters, and the contract is what you, the staffing agency, and the healthcare facility will go by.  

What Are the Requirements to Work as a Travel Nurse?

Education requirements.

The education required to become a travel nurse is similar to that of a staff nurse, meaning you’ll need either an ADN or BSN degree, and you'll need to pass the NCLEX. 

Some travel nursing positions may require a  Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. These positions are less common but do exist. 

Licensure Requirements

An often confusing aspect of travel nursing, licensure can be frustrating but also very expensive. The implementation of the Enhanced Nursing Licensure Compact (eNLC) has made the process easier and more cost-efficient. 

If your permanent residency state is part of the eNLC, then you will not need to apply for additional state licenses. Unfortunately, if you hold a single-state license and your permanent residency state is not a part of the eNLC, then you will need to apply for individual state licensures. This can delay the start of a contract and also be very costly. Some staffing agencies will reimburse you for your nursing licenses.

How Many Years Does It Take to Travel as a Nurse?

Including schooling, it can take 4 to 6 years to become a bedside nurse. After one to two years of bedside experience, you can begin exploring travel nurse positions. So, in total, you’re looking at 6-8 years to become a travel nurse.

How Do I Start Travel Nursing?

To consider starting a position as a travel nurse, you must have a minimum of one to two years of full-time bedside experience. After obtaining the necessary experience, speak to several nursing staffing agencies and determine where you would like to be a travel nurse and what positions are a good fit.

Your 2023 Guide to Travel Nursing

A new year is the perfect time to start something new. And if you’re looking for a fresh opportunity that builds on your current clinical experience, travel nursing might offer the ideal path for you. Or maybe you’re already on that path – but looking to do things a little differently.

If travel nursing is in your future, here are a few tips on creating your 2023 roadmap.

Let’s Start with the Basics. Should You Explore Travel Nursing?

If you’re still vacillating between interest and uncertainty, you might have some concerns about travel nursing. Maybe you worry you’ll be lonely or ignored by facility staff . Perhaps the inconsistency of assignments bothers you, or you think the licensing and applications will be too complicated.

Here’s the reality: travel nursing is pretty great. It’s exciting, pays well, and you get to see some of the most beautiful parts of the country. You’ll also enjoy a flexible schedule. You might complete an assignment providing hands-on trauma care for several months, then take a few weeks off to relax and recharge. You’ll expand your skill set, explore new clinical modalities, and build amazing connections.

As for assignment consistency and logistics – much of that comes down to the agency you work with. Choose wisely and you can count on administrative and professional support, as well as rich opportunities. Choose poorly and well, not so much.

Let’s look at a few guidelines that can make or break your travel nurse life.

Staffing Agencies: The Good, the Bad and the Incompetent

It was a sad story – but a common one.

As an in-demand ICU travel nurse, Ava was offered astounding pay rates during the pandemic. For her third contract, she decided to work with a for-profit hospital offering thousands of dollars a week. But just 10 days into her 13-week contract, her unit manager and recruiter informed her that her rate would be cut in half. When she protested, the recruiter pointed out that the contract terms specifically said the hospital reserved the right to change rates or cancel the contract at any time.

That’s standard for almost every travel nurse contract. By the same token, nurses can give notice with no financial or legal consequence. In other words, a travel contract is often just an agreement – but not a legally binding one.

Compensation isn’t the only possible disappointment. Gilberto, an experienced critical care nurse, signed up with a large staffing agency because he felt their size offered security. But he discovered their scheduling practices were complex, their communication poor, and their support non-existent. They did not prepare him for the facility he was assigned to, so that the staff were annoyed at his lack of awareness about the patient population’s clinical needs . When he tried to contact the agency, his recruiter ignored him.

These are increasingly common scenarios in today’s volatile nursing market. Shortages means hospitals and staffing agencies try to attract talent with high rates and reassuring promises, but then deliver something very different. One agency made the news after nurses complained of subpar housing with used needles and excrement on the premises, and filthy rooms with broken locks and stray cats in their motel beds.

Finding a Good Agency: Play Detective and Ask Questions!

As you can tell, picking the right staffing agency is critical. In addition to experienced recruiters and good hospital connections, here are a few things to look for.

To start, ask if the agency has clinical leadership. Leaders who work on the floor as physicians and nurses are going to understand your challenges and advocate effectively for you. Another factor: consider smaller agencies. Larger agencies may view you as a drop in a very large pool, with a dozen more clinicians to take your place if you leave. Smaller agencies are more incentivized to keep you happy, so they tend to ask for your personal preferences and work to ensure an assignment fits your professional goals.

Also ask the agency about its day-to-day practices. How is scheduling done? How long are the assignments? Who arranges travel and lodging?

Next, have your recruiter walk you through a theoretical assignment. What information will they provide about the facility size, patient population, and surrounding community? What type of training or orientation will you receive? What is the nurse-to-patient ratio? Are hours guaranteed? Who can you call to request help or report issues? Are there local stores where you can grab essentials and groceries – and what should you pack? Knowledge is power, and a good agency will want you to be as informed as possible.

Take Control: Set Yourself Up for Travel Nursing Success

A good staffing agency will help with logistics, but your success as a travel nurse also depends on you. Organize your paperwork – certifications, immunization records, references, and CV – so every document is current and available. If you’re not used to being away from home for long periods, remember to set up mail collection arrangements, make automatic online bill payments, and take other steps to make the transitions smoother.

Once you’re on assignment, try to befriend both the facility staff and other travelers. This is a perfect opportunity to enrich your network with clinicians of different specialties.
