Day Trip in Oslob (Cebu): Things to Do + Itinerary

Oslob is a coastal town in the southern area of Cebu, popularly known for its whale shark activity where you can swim up close with whale sharks in the ocean. It’s a must-visit when you’re in the province. We visited here on a day trip during an outreach trip. Here’s our Day Trip Guide to Oslob, Cebu!

P.S. If you’re exploring the south, don’t forget to read about our Day Tour in Moalboal & Kawasan Falls and Travel Guide to Moalboal .

From Cebu City

From badian, update: why we don’t recommend this anymore, sumilon island, tumalog falls, sunset viewing in osmena peak, reminders and tips, budget and expenses, what to read next:, how to get to oslob (cebu).

There are different ways to get to Oslob.

From Cebu City, travel time is 2.5-3 hours.

  • From Cebu South Terminal, ride a bus to Bato via Lilo-an (P155 per person, 3 hours). Inform the driver know to drop you off at the whale shark activity site or resort you’re heading to.
  • Alternatively, you can also ride a van (P150 per person, 2.5 hours) at the GT Express Terminal along Junquera Street. Get off at Oslob town proper and then ride a tricycle or habal-habal to the whale shark activity site.
  • Ride a bus to Bato and get off at the last stop. Transfer to a bus bound for Cebu City and get off at Oslob. Let the driver know you are going to the whale shark activity site or else you will be dropped off at the town center (10 km away), where you will need to take another ride.
  • You can also rent a scooter for a minimal fee. This is a good option for budget travelers who are exploring the south for a few days.

Oslob Day Tour itinerary

Here is a sample itinerary for your day tour in Oslob.

7AM – 8AM Whale shark activity 8:30AM – 11AM Sumilon Island Lunch 1PM – 3PM Tumalog Falls 4:30 – 5:30PM Sunset at Osmena Peak 6PM End of tour

If you’re coming from Cebu City, it’s best to leave at 3 or 4AM so you’ll arrive early in the morning.

Here are the activities you can do on a day trip to Oslob.

Whale shark watching

Oslob is mostly known for its whale shark activity. Here, you have to ride a boat to an area where you can see the whale sharks up close. Sightings are guaranteed all year round.

The whale shark activity is located in Barangay Tan-Awan. Once you get here, you can find resorts offering boat tours to the whale shark area. The activity starts with an orientation where you will be reminded (1) to not touch the whale sharks and (2) to avoid wearing sunscreen.

Guidelines on whale shark watching in Oslob

First of all, we were amazed that the whale shark area isn’t very far from the shore. In fact, we could already see the tour boats before boarding.

The experience was great. The whale sharks glide in the water in ones or twos and threes, mouths hanging open. It was difficult to swim though since the currents were strong. Our guides were helpful in taking pictures. I was wearing a lifevest so one guide pushed me down the water while another took photos with our action camera.

Swimming with whalesharks in Oslob, Cebu

What I noticed though is that it was easy to touch or hit the whale sharks unintentionally, due to the strong current and the fact that the whale sharks swim too close to humans.

  • The activity starts from 5:30AM to 12 noon only. It’s best to get in the wharf early in the morning before the current gets strong.
  • The activity is good for 30 minutes only.
  • Bring an action camera. If you don’t have any, you can rent one with CD copy for P550.

After this trip, I’d read about whale shark watching in Oslob and learned that it is harmful to the whale sharks for various reasons . If you still want to have a whale shark encounter, a good alternative is that in Donsol, Sorsogon, where whale sharks are left in the wild.

Here’s further reading on ethical animal encounters around the world.

Sumilon Island is a private island famous for its picturesque sand bar. Bluewater Sumilon Island Resort is located here, but it is also open for day passes.

The island is just several minutes away from the main beach in Tan-Awan. You can arrange a boat trip to Sumilon Island.

Sumilon Island in Cebu

We stayed here for a few hours, and it was time well spent. The water was clear and from there were different shades of blue.

Sumilon island clear water

  • Day pass starts from 7AM to 5PM.
  • If you’re on a day tour, you can only stay in the sand bar area.
  • There are no stores here. Bring packed lunch or food from the stores or restaurant in Oslob’s beachfront.

Tumalog Falls is a 15-minute ride from the resort area. Ride a habal-habal to get here.

Tumalog Falls is an 80- to 100-meter high waterfall with umbrella-like formations, similar to Ulan-Ulan Falls in Biliran . The water falls gently into a man-made pool, which then flows down to smaller pools. The pool is a beautiful light blue. It’s shallow so it’s safe for kids, but it’s also freezing cold.

All I can say is that Tumalog Falls is lovely. It’s high so it’s difficult to capture whole in the camera. It’s also one of the best waterfalls in the Philippines I’ve seen as of yet. I highly recommend including this stop in your Oslob day trip itinerary.

Interestingly, I googled Tumalog Falls after the trip and noticed that the cement pool walls were a recent addition. I think I would’ve preferred it au naturale, but I understand that the local government also has to make it more “palatable” and “easy” for visitors. Anyway, as long as it’s clean and properly managed, I’m happy.

Tumalog Falls in Cebu

Sunset viewing in Osmena Peak is a wonderful way to finish your day trip in Oslob.

To get here, ride a bus bound for Cebu and ask the driver to drop you off at at Dalaguete (pronounced Dalaget), which is three towns away. From there, hire a habal-habal or multicab to take you to Osmena Peak.

Osmena Peak is one of the highest points in Cebu. It’s famous for its natural rugged peaks and a favorite stop for those who want to see the sunrise or sunset.

Osmena Peak in Cebu

You can choose to hire a guide. The trek is relatively easy and takes only 20 minutes to reach the peak.

Here are some reminders and tips when planning your Oslob day tour:

  • If you have more time, you can also visit Oslob Heritage Park , where you can explore a museum and Spanish-era buildings. Entrance is free.
  • This is the usual day trip itinerary in Oslob. An alternative to the afternoon schedule includes visiting Tumalog Falls and then heading to the town of Samboan to visit its 3 waterfalls: Aguinid Falls , Dao Falls , and Binalayan Falls . However, you won’t have time to trek to Osmena Peak. (Another nearby waterfall is Kawasan Falls , although this one is best visited on a half-day tour.)
  • This day trip can be done DIY. You can also booked packaged tours online.

Here are the current rates ( Updated as of 2020 ):

In a group of 5 people, a safe budget is P1400-1500 per person .

Hi! Thank you. Your blog is very helpful. I have a question. Do you know when’s the first trip of the vans going to Oslob? Thank you!

Hi! Did you guys just do this tour by yourselves or you availed a tour package from a tour agency? Many thanks!

Katherine Cortes

DIY lang but there’s a lot of tour agencies offering this type of tour rin naman.

hi! can you share info regarding boat rental? I’ve been looking through FB, but all are linked to a tour package. we only need a pumpboat for the Sumilon island trip

Hello. You can ask at the resorts in the area once you arrive. Ganun lang rin ginawa namin.

Im so xcite because i read a lot about in cebu theres a lot of fun..this is my list bucket for my vacation dis coming december in the philippines…i never canceled to go there with my family..thanks for sharing the xpirience in cebu

Hi. Just want to know if you can book directly in oslob for the swimming with the whale sharks? And can we join other groups for this activity to cut the cost since the tours i’ve seen in various websites are expensive for 2persons? Thank you.

Hi Em. Pls read our update. We don’t recommend the whale shark activity in Oslob – https://www.taraletsanywhere.com/swimming-with-whale-sharks-philippines/

Alana Delia

Thanks so much for this! I am planning my first trip with my sister and filipino boyfriend to do this travel together in south cebu, looking forward to it! Thanks

I’m planning a day tour for Oslob for my family. Would you know any beach resorts around the area where we can wash up?

2traveldads

What a beautiful place and an incredible experience! I feel like 4 meters is still too close for the creatures’ own comfort though, when considering their size in comparison. Was this area baited/krill-stocked to attract the sharks? I’ve read of that being done, which would be my only concern with visiting.

I think so, yes. It turns out there’s a controversy about whale shark watching, with environmentalists saying it changes the natural behavior of the sea animals. I think whale shark watching in Donsol, Sorsogon, is a good alternative to Oslob.

Adrenaline Romance

Amazing trip! On your next trip, try the other side as suggested by Mustachio. There’s snorkeling and scuba diving in Moalboal, falls hopping in Samboan, and more! Cebu has so many adventures and sites to visit. 🙂

Next time we’ll do that! 🙂 We only had a day to spare because we were on a connecting flight to Siargao then.

Have you been to the southwest municipalities in Cebu? I recommend boating/snorkeling in Moalboal, canyoneering in Alegria (though I haven’t tried this myself), going to the waterfalls in Samboan, Ginatilan, and Badian.

Haven’t yet! This is literally the only time I’ve been in Cebu haha. 🙂 But I’ve been seeing so much photos of Moalboal, Alegria and the waterfalls you’ve mentioned I think it’s time I actually schedule another visit.

I love the beach and the falls, swimming w/ whale sharks seems fun, but according to studies, it disrupted the normal behaviour of this gentle creatures.

Cai Dominguez- Travelosyo

I never been to the southern part of Cebu, I’ve been planning to visit oslob ever since. I love to do diving with Butandings too that’s sooo awesome. Lovely beach plus falls. Ohhh Cebu has a lot to offer. By the way, I explored the northern part of the Province when I went there 🙂

donnamariebb

The beach in Sumilon looks amazing!

Yes it does. 🙂 We plan to go back and stay in the resort.

Results and Highlights from the 2024 Tour of Flanders

The world champion attacked on the Koppenberg and he was no match for the rest of the riders in the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

108th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 men's elite

Grey skies and consistent rain: it must be the Tour of Flanders.

The conditions were fitting for the the second Monument of the season—arguably the best of the bunch. The 2024 Ronde van Vlaanderen brought more thrills as we continue to chug through the best part of the cycling season.

Here’s how both the men’s and women’s races played out at the 2024 Tour of Flanders.

Van der Poel captures record-tying third Flanders victory

Mathieu van der Poel won the 2024 Tour of Flanders, making his definitive move with 43 kilometers to go, and once he did, he left no doubt about it.

It was a vintage cycling scene up the brutal cobbled Koppenberg with 43km to go in the race. It was there that it was all blown apart. Van der Poel laid waste to the rest of the field up the treacherous climb, that gets as steep as 22% at its worst. While many of the riders had to dismount their bikes and try to run up the hill, van der Poel (have you heard he’s a cyclocross star?) stormed ahead. His advantage only grew after that, and it quickly became apparent that it was a race for second.

108th ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 men's elite

The world champion and Alpecin-Deceuninck leader solo’d for the last hour of the race. It’s van der Poel’s third win at the Tour of Flanders, tying six others for the most wins in the Momument’s history.

Pedersen tried some interesting tactics to try and steal it from van der Poel. The Ghent-Wevelgem winner from a few weeks ago gapped the peloton with over 86km to go. He was able to establish an advantage over 25 seconds, but was eventually reeled back in before the Paterberg.

Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) was a surprise second place, out-sprinting a strong field of riders at the end to grab a podium spot, 1:02 behind van der Poel. Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) was third in the same time with Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla) relegated.

21st ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 women's elite

9 years after her first Flanders victory, Longo Borghini wins for a record second time

While the men’s race lacked drama in the final hour, the women’s race packed a ton of action into the last 45 kilometers, once the riders got on the nasty Koppenberg. In the end, Elisa Longo Borghini sprinted to the win—with the help of a teammate—to win the Tour of Flanders for the second time in her career, nine years after winning the race in 2015.

Longo Borghini won a three rider sprint to the finish over her Lidl-Trek teammate Shirin van Anrooij and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM). Van Anrooji provided the leadout for Longo Borghini, who seized the opportunity at the end and out-sprinted Niewiadoma for the victory.

Longo Borghini is the fifth rider to win the Tour of Flanders twice. No rider has ever won three. It was a 1-3 finish for the Lidl-Trek squad to cap off a big day for the team.

The Koppenberg proved to be a pivotal moment in the race. The unbelievably steep climb—made no easier by wet and rainy conditions—claimed many victims. It broke the race apart, with two-time defending champion Lotte Kopecky, as well as her SD Worx-Protime teammate Demi Vollering, among many others losing ground

Those two, along with van Anrooij, were able to make their way back to the lead group. Van Anrooij wasted no time and launched an attack off the front when the chasers rejoined the lead group. From there, she was able to gap the field.

21st ronde van vlaanderen tour des flandres 2024 women's elite

With 12km to go, Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma caught van Anrooij, and the chase group—including Kopecky, Vollering, and Marianne Vos—didn’t have the power to bridge the gap to the three leaders and it set up to be a three-rider race to the finish.

Longo Borghini handled the Koppenberg well, and rode arguably the most consistent race of the other contenders in the race. Surely, that helped her in the end, as she was able to catch van Anrooji for the run into the finish, and sprint to the win.

There was no three-peat for the world champion Kopecky, who won Flanders in 2022 and 2023. Going for a record third win in the classic, she spent much of the latter part of the race chasing down gaps. Vos took fourth, winning the sprint of the best of the rest on the day.

OUDENAARDE, Belgium (AP) — World champion Mathieu van der Poel was untouchable in tough, rainy conditions on Sunday as the Dutch rider claimed a record-equaling third win at the Tour of Flanders cobbled classic, one of cycling’s most challenging one-day races.

In the absence of several rivals, Van der Poel was the favorite from the start. He met expectations in style with a long-range attack in a brutal climb.

The Tour of Flanders is one of the “monuments” of cycling — the five most prestigious one-day events in the sport — along with Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro di Lombardia.

First held in 1913, the race is also known as De Ronde (The Tour). It features multiple short but punishing climbs and is one of the two classics with cobblestone sections along with Paris-Roubaix.

Elisa Longo Borghini won the women’s race to claim a second title following her 2015 victory in Flanders. She won a sprint ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma and Shirin van Anrooij.

Van der Poel attacked from a group of contenders in the ascent of the Koppenberg, with about 45 kilometers (28 miles) left in the race.

Jonas Hansen Vingegaard - Team Visma - Lease A Bike, the winner of the race, celebrates on the podium with the Trident Trophy after the 59th Tirreno - Adriatico 2024, Stage from San Benedetto del Tronto to San Benedetto del Tronto, Sunday, March 10, 2024 in San Benedetto del Tronto, Tuscany, Italy. Ivan Garcia Cortina, the lone remaining breakaway rider, had a mechanical problem and was swallowed on the cobbles made slippery by the rain. Most of the riders had to dismount and walk up the iconic climb while Van der Poel, sitting firmly on his saddle, used his immense power to reach the top of the hill first, and then destroyed the field.

Spurred on by thousands of vociferous fans lining the roads, Van der Poel did not look back afterward and opened a huge gap as he continued his amazing solo effort in the remaining climbs. Van der Poel slowed down near the finish and, once he crossed the line, held up his bike in triumph.

Van der Poel joined a group of riders with the most Tour of Flanders wins (3), along with Achiel Buysse, Fiorenzo Magni, Eric Leman, Johan Museeuw, Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara.

Luca Mozzato was the best of the chasers to clinch second place, ahead of Nils Politt after Michael Matthews was relegated from third to 11th following a jury decision.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar skipped the race this year, focusing instead on his preparations for Liege-Bastogne-Liege on April 21 and the Giro d’Italia in May. Other big names missing included Wout van Aert and fellow Belgian rider Jasper Stuyven, who were both ruled out after crashing at high speed during a preparation event last week.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Mathieu van der Poel converts Koppenberg attack into third triumph

The 29-year-old broke clear from a chase group on the cobbled climb with around 45km to go on his way to victory, as Elisa Longo Borghini took the women's race.

World road race champion Mathieu van der Poel is the seventh man to win the Tour of Flanders three times

World road cycling champion Mathieu van der Poel joined an exclusive club of three-time Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) winners after soloing to a comfortable victory in the 2024 race on Sunday (31 March).

Van der Poel had sat back in the peloton early, only bridging across to the lead group with around 87km to go. After another attack went clear, van der Poel caught the leaders on the penultimate ascent of the Oude Kwaremont at 45km to go.

Movistar's Iván García went clear on the descent but suffered two hills later on the slippery cobbled Koppenberg climb, on which Van der Poel launched his decisive attack.

From there, he was unmatched. The chasers had no answer for the world champion, who imposed himself on the race and opened an unassailable lead. Eventually, the chase group seemed to settle on racing for the minor podium spots.

The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider's lead grew close to two minutes, and while his advantage shrunk on the flat final 10km run to the line in Oudenaarde, no one was able to catch him.

Van der Poel crossed the line in six hours five minutes and 23 seconds, slowing up in the final metres before getting off his bike immediately after finishing to lift it into the cold, rainy air in celebration.

"My season is already a success. Winning the Tour of Flanders in the world champion jersey is a dream come true and I need a few moments to let it sink in," Van der Poel said after the race.

  • Mathieu van der Poel on planning Olympic season: 'It's always a difficult puzzle to make'
  • Mathieu van der Poel exclusive on switching between cycling disciplines: “It used to be easier”

History for van der Poel and Longo Borghini

After previous wins in 2020 and 2022, the Dutchman became the seventh man to win the race a record three times. It was his second triumph of the season after winning the E3 Saxo Classic last Friday.

Behind him, Alberto Bettiol and Dylan Teuns both went clear of the remaining chasers with around 20km to go, and held off multiple attempts to bring them back until the final sprint, when they finally cracked.

A group of nine managed to catch Bettiol and Teuns, with Italy's Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) taking second place in a photo finish ahead of Michael Matthews . However, Matthews was later relegated by the race commisaires to the back of the group, giving third to German Nils Politt of UAE Team Emirates. Van der Poel's eventual gap to Mozzato and the chasers was 1:02.

After the race, the Dutchman was not ready to discuss the next crown in the classics calendar – Paris-Roubaix next weekend – quite yet.

"I cannot think about Roubaix yet… it was one of the hardest races I've ever done with the weather circumstances. I was really completely empty the last 10k to the finish line – I just closed my eyes and tried to get there as fast as possible."

The women's Tour of Flanders went to Elisa Longo Borghini in a race dominated by her Lidl-Trek team.

Shirin van Anrooij made a solo attack just over 20km from the finish and was joined by teammate Longo Borghini and Katarzyna Niewiadoma with 12km to go.

The three were together at the finish, and Italy's two-time Olympic bronze medallist won the sprint with Niewiadoma second and van Anrooij celebrating a team triumph in third.

Longo Borghini is the fifth woman to win two Tour of Flanders having been victorious in 2015. World road race champion Lotte Kopecky , who was seeking a third consecutive title, finished in fifth place.

  • emmjaacee 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles I know it's a novel - but it needed to be said...Blu Range "blew" us away!!! Booking a tour with a local provider on the other side of the world often feals like a leap of faith...BUT from the moment I made contact with Blu Range owner Hannah (she is simply amazing) I was in good hands. From start to finish, as we finalized the custom details of a 4 day and 3 night itinerary I felt supported and reassured both overseas in Canada and in the Philippines. Hannah and her fabulous Team took such great care of us. I told her that we felt like family and it's evident throughout - she wants to ensure you enjoy your stay and that all booked experiences from the first moment you interact with her extended team are living up to your expectation. She ensures that her Team guides you to all the designated locations and are accountable each and every step of the way. Her thoughtfulness and attention to detail really shines. On our final day in Cebu - she noticed it was my birthday and as a touching surprise she coordinated the purchase of a small birthday cake at Carbon Market, wrote both of us a personalized note and provided a symbolic souvenir gift as a send-off - what a beautiful touch!! Heartfelt THANK YOUs to Hannah's extended team - we are extrememly grateful. Cyrus, your personal story-telling and knowledge about Cebu made the drives very educational and entertaining, and for getting us everywhere we needed to be on time. Oliver, your superb driving skills and extreme patience made sure that despite mother nature's rainy morning forecast we were able to appreciate Oslob and Moalbal to the fullest. Jorge for maintaining a good pace while giving us as much time as we needed at each site on a full itinerary in Bohol - also your photography skills are on point!! Leye for being so warm and personal with your experiences - the food tour in Cebu city came alive; we ate so well, were stuffed and savoured the uniqueness and richness of the cuisine. One gets a real sense that Hannah's Team also feels equally respectful of her - it's highly encouraging! Don't hesitate booking your experience Blu Range Tours, you certainly won't be disappointed - Hannah, we can't thank YOU enough for making our time in the Visayas EXTRA special and SO very memorable. It lasts about an hour long, but I got to do exactly what I came to see--the sardines and sea turtles! Jonathan, my guide, made me feel safe as I am not the strongest swimmer. I also had the go pro upgrade and got lasting memories of the tour without having to worry about taking my own photos/videos as Jonathan took care of it all and had it transferred to my phone after the tour. I also found out that the group does other diving adventures as I recently took up scuba. If I'm back in Cebu, I will hit them up again at ABISMO Divers Moalboal. Read more Written February 11, 2024

Bare in mind, you will be eating a lot (it's not just sample portions it's full portions every location) so make sure you have lots of room to eat. Lastly, The food that she showed was a mixture of everything Cebu had to offer and keep in mind it is all pure Filipino Street food so it may not be the same condition as Western Street food. Regardless, the food was delicious and overall a unique cultural experience! Read more Written January 5, 2024
  • ltorres50 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Stay away, unless you want a silent tour and to try Cebu’s famous lechon from a shopping mall food court. Short version: Horrible experience, stay away,. They promised a private high -end food and culture tour and Blu Range didn’t deliver. We booked for 11/03/2023, started the tour that evening, and immediately canceled after the first stop as it was obviously going to be a waste of our time and money. The operator promised a refund for a failed tour and never did process the refund to this date almost two months ago. Long version: We booked a food tour with Hannah from Blu Range Cebu Tours on short notice. We only had one night in Cebu at the tail-end of 3 weeks in the Philippines and we wanted to have a great food and cultural tour, especially to experience Cebu’s world famous lechon. We discussed via WhatsApp with Hannah what we wanted and agreed to a rather pricey private tour (almost 14,000 Philippine Pesos or over $250 USD). Nevertheless , we felt good about Blu Range after reading reviews here on TripAdvisor. The tour guide met us at our hotel with a driver and we were off. Our comfort and confidence on the tour quickly faded. The guide and driver drove us to our first stop to try lechon. Rather than easing us into the ultimate Cebu dish with other foods, this was her first offering. I asked what the itinerary was, she said in very difficult English that we would go to this place first and try some foods at other places and continue until we were satisfied. Doubt started creeping in as this seemed very unplanned and haphazard. Our fears were gravely realized when the guide and driver took us to a food court in a modern shopping mall near our hotel (in Mactan, not Cebu City proper) to sample lechon. When we got there, needless to say we were very very disappointed. We don’t consider a shopping mall food court a highlight that would adequately spotlight Cebu’s world famous lechon. Additionally, the ride to the shopping mall was about 20 minutes and aside from answering a couple questions we had about the tour, the guide was painfully silent throughout almost the entire ride. She had nothing to offer about the city/location, culture, people nor the food we were about to eat. We didn’t know if she had difficulty communicating, as she barely communicated at all. The driver was even more silent, but they did talk to each other sporadically in Cebuano which we felt a little put off by. Full disclosure, I was born in the Philippines and had not been back in over 25 years. My wife isn’t Filipino and this was her first time visiting. I can understand and speak Tagalog. I can’t understand nor speak Cebuano nor radio silence. The final straw for us was when the food stall that offered lechon only had one type of lechon available, a very spicy lechon. There would be at least half an hour wait for the regular lechon. The guide didn’t even know this situation going to the place and she didn’t ask us about our dietary preferences. At this point we realized we were not going to get the food and cultural tour we discussed with Hannah and paid for. We contacted Hannah and mutually agreed to cancel the tour and she rpomised to refund us. The tour guide and driver took us back to our hotel, again in silence. We felt a little bad for the guide and driver, we tipped them despite our horrible experience as we did not want to be stranded in the shopping mall. It was near the holidays and we had extra pesos before returning to the US, so we felt like doing the right thing and gave them something. What a mistake. We communicated with Hannah a few times to inquire about our refund after arriving back in the US. To this date, almost 2 months since the failed tour, we still have not gotten a refund. 3 weeks of a beautiful trip to the Philippines was ruined by one evening of incompetence and disaster. Stay away from Blu Range Tours. Read more Written December 21, 2023

Mathieu van der Poel celebrates after crossing the finish line at the Tour of Flanders

Mathieu van der Poel crushes rivals to claim third Tour of Flanders title

  • Men’s world champion produces devastating attack on cobbles
  • Elisa Longo Borghini wins women’s race in sprint finish

The men’s world champion, Mathieu van der Poel, crushed his rivals with a devastating long-range attack to claim his third Tour of Flanders on Sunday.

In the women’s race, the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini came home first after outsprinting Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma and Shirin van Anrooij of the Netherlands.

Van der Poel, who now has five Monument titles to his name, produced a trademark brutal acceleration in the Koppenberg’s cobbled ascent, 45 kilometres from the finish, and never looked back as several riders had to step off their bikes. The cycling calendar has five Monuments: Milan-Sanremo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Giro di Lombardia.

Van der Poel also won Milan-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix last year. He will be the heavy favourite for the Flanders-Roubaix double when he rides in the “Queen of the Classics” next Sunday.

The Dutchman, the first rider with five consecutive podium finishes on the Tour of Flanders, was in a class of his own in the Belgian rain in an event Wout van Aert missed after sustaining injuries in the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race on Wednesday.

The warm-up race was won by Matteo Jorgenson but the American cracked as he was chasing Van der Poel after the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider’s attack. The 29-year-old Van der Poel was in a class of his own and crossed the line more than a minute ahead of the Italian Luca Mozzato and the German Nils Politt, after the Australian Michael Matthews, initially third, was demoted following an irregular sprint after 270.8km.

Elisa Longo Borghini celebrates victory in the women’s race

Britain’s Josh Tarling (Ineos) was 17th, Owain Doull (EF Education-Easypost) was 19th, Tarling’s teammate Ben Turner was 38th and Fred Wright (Bahrain-Victorious) was 50th of 87 finishers. Tadej Pogacar, the defending champion, did not take part in the race as he is focusing on a Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double this season.

Longo Borghini, of Lidl-Trek, was celebrating her second Tour of Flanders title, having won it first in 2015. Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) was the highest-placed British rider in the women’s event, 1min 46sec off the lead in 13th place.

Start of Pandemic

On January 30, 2020, the very first case of the Corona Virus was reported in the Philippines. It involved a 38-year old Chinese National who was hospitalized in the San Lazaro Hospital in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Just a few days after the recorded first case, the country reported the very first death outside mainland China. He was a 44-year old Chinese man. On March 5, a 62-year old man who did not have a travel history was confirmed positive of the disease and that’s when the community transmission began.

While the cases in Metro Manila were rising, Cebu still remained COVID free and tourism was still on going. Only until the 13th of March when the very first case was announced, that things changed. Preventive measures were made by the government and that included the “Stay-at-Home” order. Although lockdown was still not in the plan, strict regulations have been implemented in the borders to prevent the virus from spreading.

Status of Tourism

The start of the pandemic also marked the suspension of tourism activities in Cebu City and in the whole island. Tourist destinations, resorts, and beaches closed. People were encouraged to go back to their hometowns. Because all the countries in the world ordered lockdowns, foreigners were required to go back to their countries. This made tourism be paralyzed.

While tourism is at freeze, the tourism sector suffered a lot. This doesn’t only include travel agencies and travel destinations but also affected hotels, and car rental companies. With the pandemic going on, there is no guarantee yet as to when tourism will be back.

What is the Tourism Sector Doing During the Pandemic?

Though this pandemic has impacted so many companies and caused the closure of some, other companies made this as an opportunity to improve and divert to other better opportunities. In Oslob for example, the local government allotted a budget for the continuous feeding of the whale sharks so that the gentle giants will not depart from the place. So when the pandemic is over, the whale shark watching activity will automatically go back to normal operation. Some car rental companies are catering shuttle services for companies that started to open. Some tourist destination companies also took advantage of this time to do some renovation and improvement. Hotels, on the other hand, partnered with companies like BPO to provide temporary accommodation for their employees.

2024 Valero Texas Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

P layers will have one last chance to tune their game before the Masters this week at the 2024 Valero Texas Open , which is once again being held at TPC San Antonio. Corey Conners will look to defend his title after winning the event last year with a score of 15-under par.

Below, we look at the 2024 Valero Texas Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Rory McIlroy typically doesn't play the week before the Masters but he's in the Texas Open field this year and the betting favorite to win at +1000. Ludvig Aberg (+1200), Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) and Collin Morikawa (+2500) are among the other big names teeing it up this week.

TPC San Antonio is a par 72 and plays at 7,438 yards with very little elevation change throughout the course. It's not an overly challenging course, with the winning score being between 11-under and 20-under par over the last 8 years. However, if the wind picks up it will have a big impact on scoring.

Valero Texas Open – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:53 p.m. ET.

Ludvig Aberg (+1200)

Aberg is only in his 1st full season on the PGA Tour, but he's already one of the best ball strikers in the world and that's highly advantageous on this course. He ranks 24th in strokes gained: tee-to-green this season and his putting isn't holding him back too much (57th in SG), so he's a perfect fit for TPC San Antonio, even after missing the cut here last year.

Corey Conners (+2200)

It's always hard to expect the defending champion to win in back-to-back years but Conners' course history and ball-striking prowess make him too good to ignore. He's won here twice since 2019 (his only 2 PGA wins)  and hasn't finished worse than 35th in his last 5 starts in this event, using his stellar iron play to propel him to 2 victories.

Valero Texas Open picks – Contenders

Keith mitchell (+5500).

After blowing a 54-hole lead at the Valspar Championship 2 weeks ago, Mitchell missed the cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open over the weekend after finishing 3-over in his last 5 holes to miss it by 1 shot. He's still among the best players on tour from tee to green, ranking 8th in strokes gained, and he's finished 17th and 26th in 2 starts here during his career. He's due for a bounce-back.

Erik van Rooyen (+6600)

van Rooyen has not been good around the greens this season, which is holding him back from contending more, but he's 48th on tour in strokes gained: tee-to-green and 19th total. Before he missed the cut at the Players Championship, he finished 8th, 2nd and 25th in 3 consecutive tournaments.

Valero Texas Open picks – Long shots

Ryan moore (+10000).

Moore is quietly playing well right now, finishing 31st, 5th and 45th in his last 3 starts. Impressively, he's 12th in SG: tee-to-green, including 4th in approach, but his putting has been horrific (173rd). TPC San Antonio is more about ball striking than putting, which has helped him finish in the top 10 twice before, so he's a worthy long shot this week.

Matt Kuchar (+12500)

Kuchar has finished 3rd, 2nd, 12th and 7th in his last 4 starts at this tournament, an event he plays every year. Looking at his stats from this season gives you pause when it comes to betting him because he isn't playing well (6 missed cuts in 8 starts), but it's hard to ignore his recent finishes at TPC San Antonio.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Tours to Moscow

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Our online Airline Ticket booking system offers some of the most competitive rates to Russia available on the web so if you need tickets, please visit our Russian air ticket center . Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
