Last month the 'Someone You Loved' hitmaker went public about his Tourette's Syndrome diagnosis because he didn't want people to notice his tics and think he had a substance abuse problem.

"I have been diagnosed with Tourette's," he said in September. "I wanted to speak about it because I didn't want people to think I was taking cocaine or something. "My shoulder twitches when I am excited, happy, nervous or stressed. It is something I am living with. It is not as bad as it looks."

Review by Sarah Kidd . Photography by Chris Zwaagdyk .

Strolling into town last night, self-proclaimed ‘one hit wonder’ Lewis Capaldi laid down a set dipped in equal parts melancholia and Glaswegian humour that left the sold-out audience satisfied, but somewhat a little short-changed.

In support, the lovely Yorke (aka Grace Hughes), a Byron Bay native whose stage name is a play on New York, her favourite city in the world. Performing her first international show last night, she gracefully commanded the stage, her sequinned top reflecting minute fragments of light.

Accompanied only by a guitarist and her own keyboard, Yorke offered up a short set of her indie pop stylised tracks which included singles ‘Thought I Could’ and ‘Wake The City’ as well as a promise to donate all the proceeds from her merchandise sales to the Australian Rural Fire Service ; ‘Watertight’ a poignant song to follow such a selfless gesture from an emerging artist.

Upping the ante with a cover of Lana Del Ray’s ‘Summertime Sadness’, Yorke proved not only that she has come a long way since her days of busking around her hometown as a teenager but that her aspirations will continue to propel her forward into a bright future.

Amusing themselves with impromptu karaoke to Robbie Williams ‘Angels’ playing over the sound system, the Auckland crowd patiently waited for Capaldi to appear; Flight of the Conchords ‘Business Time’ both a tongue-in-cheek intro and a playful nod to his kiwi fans.

A four piece band in tow and a giant version of the cover of his debut album serving as his backdrop, Capaldi arrived dressed down in simple black jumper and jeans, the fact that he has been nominated for not only a BRIT Critics Choice Award as well as a Grammy not quite getting to his head yet.

And that’s part of the twenty-three years old’s affable and at times disconcerting charm; racing to the top of the charts with both his single ‘Someone You Loved’ and his debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, one would expect Capaldi to be embracing the pop star life and acting accordingly. Instead, the young singer is a walking conundrum, his songs steeped in heartache and loss, while in between his onstage (and offstage) banter is self-deprecating and at times wildly facetious, his social media posts full of material on everything from blocked hotel toilets to Tinder profiles, supposed net worth and his love for Buckfast Tonic Wine.

Even the title of his album appears to poke fun at his own feigned disdain for both his despondent compositions and the music industry itself, at one-point last night he even referred to his own record company as ‘money hungry’ for releasing an extended version of said debut. Is it all an act? Is Capaldi playing up to his fans? Or as a young artist entering a new decade as a worldwide star, is he just acutely aware of his own limited longevity in an industry where flavour of the month changes by the hour and is therefore just calling it as he sees it?

Either way, his fans love him for it as evidenced by their adoring faces and impassioned sing-a-longs to almost every one of his songs. Opening with ‘Grace’ it is immediately evident that Capaldi can sing, the gravel tinged tone topped with occasional emotional crescendos a recipe that works for lyrics about pining for lost love, just ask Calum Scott and James Arthur.

Part concert and part stand-up comedy show, Capaldi interspersed his middle of the road pop songs with banter about anything and everything, playfully teasing the audience to their immense delight and while for the most part they seemed enthralled with his every move, the show still felt lacking. Maybe it was the absence of confetti and showers of sparks that appeared at his recent Australian shows (to be fair this could have been a venue restriction) or the short set list that scraped in at just eleven songs. Capaldi may only have the one album, but there was ample room for a couple more tunes or at least a cover. The rather monotone lighting and lack of introductions of his own band only adding to the feeling.

Finally upping the tempo a bit more both musically and stage wise with big and bold versions of ‘Fade’ and ‘Hold Me While You Wait’, Capaldi genuinely thanked his fans and farewelled them with the song that no doubt many had been hanging out for; ‘Someone You Loved’ taken over by the audience and strangely turned into a fast paced chant towards the end before Capaldi once again took charge for a sentimental finish; any hope for an encore quickly dashed by the swift raising of the house lights.

Capaldi has the chops, and the fact that he is riding this current wave of success without sacrificing who he inherently is as a person has to be admired. Just how long that wave lasts however remains to be seen, but one can’t help but wish the very best for him.

Award-winning singer-songwriter Noah Cyrus will join Lewis Capaldi on his upcoming Australia and New Zealand tour .

Cyrus will open for the Scottish pop superstar at all his arena shows in Aotearoa and Down Under, with dates in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Auckland, and Wellington throughout July (see full dates below). Tickets for the shows are on sale now via Secret Sounds, with one date each in Sydney and Melbourne currently sold out.

Miley Cyrus’ younger sibling released her debut studio album, The Hardest Part , last year to wide acclaim. “Cyrus has always been in the spotlight, all the way back to appearing on her father Billy Ray’s TV drama, Doc, when she was two years old.

“But The Hardest Part is the result of her stepping away and figuring out who she is — and the songs she wrote during that time sound appealing even as they’re digging into knotty, complex emotions,” wrote Rolling Stone in a positive review of the country-pop record.

Capaldi, meanwhile, is touring in support of his recently announced album,  Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent , which is set for release on Friday, May 19th via EMI Records (pre-order here ).

It’s the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to his 2019 debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent , which reached number seven on the ARIA Albums Chart and was the best-selling album in the UK two years running. That album spawned the massive singles “Someone You Loved” and “Before You Go”, the former of which earned a nomination for Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent contains the new single “Forget Me”, which became Capaldi’s third number one UK hit.

Lewis Capaldi cancels his upcoming New Zealand dates

Lewis Capaldi has just cancelled all his upcoming New Zealand tour dates, and we’re just as upset as you!

The Scottish singer-songwriter has just announced on his socials that he’s taking a much-needed break from touring “for the foreseeable future” to rest and recover after his  Tourette syndrome has caused some struggles while performing .

In the heartfelt note, Capaldi wrote: “I’d hoped having a 3-week break would be enough of a rest to get me through the rest of the shows this summer which I was really looking forward to, but I knew the moment I got in the car down to play this Saturday that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order to be able to carry on doing everything I love for a long time.”

He added that learning to adjust to the impacts of his Tourette Syndrome has been difficult.

“FOR THE MOMENT I’LL NEED TO MAKE SOME DIFFICULT DECISIONS TO WORK OUT WHAT WORKS BEST FOR ME, I’M UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO ILLUSIONS WHATSOEVER THAT I’M INCREDIBLY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THIS MOMENT WHEN OTHERS MAY NOT.”

He continued: “I’m so very lucky to have an amazing family, friends, team and medical professionals around me who have all been so supportive at every single step of the way through the good times and like right now the most difficult of times. I want to thank them and thank all of you also for the outpouring of support and encouragement through everything and even more so these past 12 months when I’ve needed it more than ever.”

“Again I’m so incredibly sorry for all of you who had planned to come to a show over before the end of this year but now is the time to properly focus on being well to give me any chance at being able to get back to doing what I love so much. Playing these shows every night is all I’ve ever dreamed of so it’s been the most difficult realisation of my life that right now I have to pause for a moment,” Capaldi added.

While it’s incredibly sad that this means he will not be making his way to our shores here in NZ, it’s good to hear that Capaldi is taking the time to focus on his mental health.

The news comes after  Lewis previously mentioned a potential break while performing at Glastonbury festival over the weekend .

The singer apologised towards the end of his set: "I feel like I’ll be taking another wee break for the next few weeks, you might not see me for the rest of the year. But when I do come back, and I do see you, I hope you’re up for watching."

Capaldi's cancelled performances include Auckland’s Spark Arena on Tuesday, July 18th and Wellington’s TSB Arena on Wednesday, July 19th.

Lewis Capaldi cancels New Zealand shows, rest of 2023 world tour: ‘I’m so incredibly sorry’

Lewis Capaldi has confirmed his New Zealand shows are no longer going ahead, just weeks before he was set to perform in Auckland and Wellington.

The Scottish singer was set to take to the stage in Auckland on July 18, followed by a show in the capital on July 19, but after struggling through his Glastonbury set over the weekend, he’s now revealed that he’s been forced to cancel all his upcoming shows to focus on his health.

Capaldi told fans in an emotional statement shared on his Instagram page tonight that while the news probably didn’t come as a surprise, he was “very sorry to let you know I’m going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future”.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lewis Capaldi (@lewiscapaldi)

“I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I’d hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out,” he continued.

“But the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”

Capaldi thanked his family, friends, medical professionals and his fans “who’ve been so supportive every step of the way through the good times and even more so during this past year when I’ve needed it more than ever.

“I’m so incredibly sorry to everyone who had planned to come to a show before the end of the year but I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve,” he added.

“Playing for you every night is all I’ve ever dreamed of so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I’ll be back as soon as I possibly can.”

Promoter Live Nation confirmed the Auckland and Wellington shows would not be going ahead, adding in a statement that refunds would be automatically processed for everyone who had purchased a ticket.

“We’re sorry for any disappointment caused. Thank you very much for your patience,” the statement continued.

Earlier this week, Kiwi fans realised Capaldi’s New Zealand shows were in doubt after seeing things take an emotional turn during the artist’s set at Glastonbury.

Battling through losing his voice and a great deal of tics, a symptom of his Tourette’s syndrome, the star profusely apologised to the crowd before revealing he planned to take some more time off to allow himself time to “rest and recover”.

During the set, the star told fans, “I wanted to come back and do Glasto because it’s so incredible, so I just wanna thank you for coming out and watching us. I was s*** scared but you’ve really made me feel at ease. I’m really sorry — I hope the Eavises will have me back even though it’s been a bit of a s*** show.”

He added, “I feel like I’ll be taking another wee break for the next few weeks. You might not see me even for the rest of the year, but when I do come back and I do see you, I hope you’re up for watching.”

His fans are applauding his decision to put his health first and take care of himself.

It comes after he revealed earlier this week that he was cancelling upcoming shows in Glasgow, Dublin, London and Norway, writing “This is a really difficult message, and one that hurts me a lot to have to type, but I’m really sorry to say that I’m going to have to cancel all commitments from now until I play Glastonbury on June 24th.”

He went on to say he needed time to “rest and recover” and empathetically said “I know many of you will have spent money on travel or hotels, which I appreciate more than ever with how difficult things are economically at the moment, so I’m extremely sorry for the impact this will have. The fact you’re willing to come out and spend your time, money and love on these shows is beyond comprehension and I feel incredibly lucky.”

He signed off by saying, “I take none of this for granted and can’t wait to be back doing it again.”

Lewis Capaldi Profile

Lewis Capaldi is a Scottish alternative singer and songwriter. He has released a number of EPs in anticipation for his debut album, which is titled “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent”.

Musically, Lewis Capaldi is a cross between Ed Sheeran, Bastille, and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man. He opened for Bastille on his 2018-2019 tour. He has a booming, powerful voice set above melodic guitars.

Lewis Capaldi’s biggest singles so far include “Grace” and “Someone You Loved”. Someone You Loved made it to #1 in Lewis’ home country of Scotland and was a big success. The 2019 world tour that accompanied the album was Lewis’ biggest yet.

In the fall of 2019, Lewis announced a co-headlining tour with Niall Horan . Due to the success of those dates, the pair had plans for a 2020 extension of the tour. However, those were cancelled because of the pandemic.

In 2023, Lewis will be releasing his second studio album and going out on tour again.

Lewis Capaldi Will Bring the Heartbreak on New Album and Tour

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Scottish singer-songwriter (and late-night Harry Styles texter ) Lewis Capaldi has officially announced his second album, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent , which will arrive May 19, 2023, on Capitol Records.

The album follows Capaldi’s hugely successful 2019 debut, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent , which featured the musician’s breakthrough single, “Someone You Loved.” A full track list for Broken by Desire hasn’t been released yet, but it will feature Capaldi’s latest single, “Forget Me” (which recently got a goofy video based entirely on the classic Wham! clip for “Club Tropicana”).

To make Broken by Desire , Capaldi reunited with the songwriting/production trio, TMS, as well as Phil Plested, both of whom he worked with on Divinely Uninspired . The new record also features contributions from pop’s most indomitable hitmaker, Max Martin.
