Situated in the picturesque locality of Fontainhas, the Chapel of St. Sebastian is a quaint affair in white and has an imposing façade. Inside the chapel, the statue of Virgin Mary and three beautifully carved screens received from a church in Diu also deserve admiration. Places to visit in panjim, the heart of goa.

Panjim or Panaji, Goa has been home for me for the last few years. We tend to take our homes for granted, and so did I. This post took so long to write, but I hope it would be like we say in Hindi – Der Aaye, Durust Aaye. It came late, but it came out well. Get to know about Places to visit in Panjim.

Miramar Beach - Places to visit in Panjim

Panjim is surrounded by water on almost all sides. On one side is Mandovi merging into the Arabian Sea, and on the other River Zuari. To get out of the city, you need to cross one of these rivers or walk along Mandovi till it feels like a mainland.

History of Panjim

Panjim is an island that got connected to Old Goa, which was the capital of the Portuguese when a long causeway connected it. I am talking about the Ribandar Causeway that still connects the city to Old Goa through an arched structure in laterite stone. When I walk on this, I feel I am walking on the birth limb of Panjim.

Do you know Panjim has two roads named after two historical dates – 18th June Road and 31st January Road?

Initially, Panjim was limited to an area that we now know as Fontainhas. A lovely little area with colorful houses and heavenly bakeries. Now, it is becoming home to heritage hotels, boutiques, and designer stores. If you have seen the city in films, you have probably seen this area.

Places to visit in Panjim

Explore the following interesting heritage, landmarks, city walks, leisure, art, festivals, restaurants, museums, water sports, entertainment, and beaches while visiting the city and/or Goa.

Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church

Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church, Panjim

This late 16th CE church with a lovely staircase sits on a hill overlooking the city. It is the most photographed and filmed part of the city and maybe the state. It is a pleasure to sit in front of it and admire the lovely structure. One of the popular places to visit in Panjim, particularly during Christmas.

Maruti Temple

On another sits the saffron-colored temple dedicated to Hanuman. The temple is best seen at dusk when it is lit up and it shines like a jewel on the hill. It needs a bit of endurance to climb the steep steps leading to the Maruti temple.

Adil Shah Palace or Old Secretariat

This lovely building in quintessential yellow and white is the only Palace in Panjim. Now it is home to art exhibitions. We keep hearing the state museum will shift here, but it is yet to happen. The road that you see outside the palace was a moat around the palace.

Cabo Raj Bhawan

The official residence of the Governor of Goa is situated on the tip of a finger jutting out into the Arabian Sea. Normally, you are not allowed to go inside, but on Sunday mornings, it is open for those who want to visit the church there. Try your luck – it is worth a visit. Of course, if you know the governor, invite yourself!

Cabo Raj Bhavan Goa

Update – Raj Bhavan is now open to the public with prior online booking, three days of the week – Friday to Sunday. You can go to Raj Bhavan Website and book the tour. It is priced at Rs 300/- per person and you are required to carry a Photo Id card.

The tour covers the Aushadhi Vatika or a herbal garden, the helipad, and the cannon point where you can see old cannons looking into the sea. This is the westmost point of Goa, so all you see around is the sea. You get to see the Raj Bhavan Museum, which is small but interesting. You get to see the Church where Dona Paula of Dona Paula’s fame is buried. Grotto and the beach are other attractions of the tour.

Mahalakshmi Temple

Unique Deepstambh at Mahalakshmi Temple

One of the most popular temples in Panaji is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi. Do not miss the unique Deepstambh in brickwork here.

Museums – Places to visit in Panjim

The city has 3 museums. Museum buffs may easily spend some time during the daytime.

Goa State Museum

Mahishasurmardini at Goa State Museum - Panaji

Like every state museum, this museum aims to showcase the heritage and antiquities of the state. Not the best museum you would see, but go there to see a lovely wooden Rath or Temple Chariot, the ancient Hero stones that honor the brave posthumously. The time needed is about an hour. It is indeed the Place to visit in Panjim if you like heritage and museums.

Goa State Excise Museum

This is a lovely little museum located in a 400+-year-old blue building on the banks of the Mandovi River. On the two floors of this museum, you walk through the history of smuggling – I call it a walk through the smugglers’ minds over the ages. Of course, it also tells you the tales of customs and taxes that exist across borders. Time Needed – 1 hour. Read my detailed blog post here .

Goa Science Centre

The Science Centre is the go-to place for school-going kids. They can see magic galleries and learn about a bit of science in this museum conveniently located close to Miramar Beach.

Experiences – Places to visit in Panjim

Following are some of the cherishable experiences you may gain here.

Sunset at Dona Paula

Dona Paula is famous for its sunset. It gives you a vantage point where you only see the sky, sea, and sun. Reach 20-30 minutes ahead of sunset time and enjoy the stunning sunsets. Sunsets are particularly colorful and dramatic post-monsoons in October and November.

Cruises & Water Sports in Panjim

Yacht Ride in Goa

The city offers plenty of water-based activities at the Mandovi River, estuary, and Arabian Sea. You can hire a private boat to explore the backwaters of the Mandovi River, birding near the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

Most organized cruises operate in the evening – for the tourists to have fun, get sunset view, dusk view, dolphin sighting, etc.

  • Boat Ride on Mandovi
  • Dinner Cruise on Mandovi
  • Paragliding
  • Jet Ski Ride

Popular Tourist Boat rides at Miramar beach

Panjim Beaches – Places to visit in Panjim

Miramar beach.

Colorful sky at dusk, Miramar Beach, Places to visit in Panjim, Goa

Miramar Beach is the most popular beach in Goa – always full of tourists. This is where I go for my evening walks when I am at home. It is a pleasure to watch the sunset here as tourists try to catch them with their cameras.

You can take hour-long boat rides from Miramar Beach that take you a bit inside the sea. They promise to show you some locations that you might have seen in Hindi Films. Dinner and sunset cruises can be taken from Santa Monica Jetty.

Bambolim Beach & Siridao Beach

Sunset scene, Bambolim beach, Places to visit in Panjim

This is a quieter beach mostly visited by people who stay in the high-end hotels located next to it. We always take our guests to Bambolim Beach for a quiet beach experience. Though, technically it is a bay and not a beach.

It extends further to Siridao Beach, which is one of our favorite places to watch the sunset as the local boys play cricket and football.

Walking Trails – Places to visit in Panjim

Fontainhas heritage walk.

A colorful tiled wall at Fontainhas

The Fontainhas is the oldest part of Panaji, sometimes also called the Latin Quarters. It is known for its colorful houses and steep staircases that connect it to the hill above. This is the popular heritage Place to visit in Panjim.

Read our detailed post on Fontainhas Walk

Mandovi Promenade Walk

Panaji is one of the few cities in India that is walking-friendly. The main road of the city officially called D B Bhandodkar Road is a great place to walk. I would suggest starting with Kala Academy. Watch the sunset at Darya Sangam and then walk towards the Jetty point along the Mandovi River. You can stop and stroll at Forest Park or taste some street food on the way. By the time it’s dark, all the boats, signboards, and casino boats would be lit up. It is a must-see sight in the city.

Dona Paula Walk

Sunset Viewpoint Dona Paula Jetty - Places to visit in Panjim

Dona Paula is best known for its sunset and its famous statue of Dona and Paul. However, it is a pleasure to walk on the lanes leading to the Jetty with some hidden treasures.

University Walk

Goa University has a lovely campus. We love to go for walks there. The best one is behind the university library. Reach the library and walk on the road that takes you behind the library. The narrow road will take you past many departments but more importantly through the many trees where you can spot many birds.

Ghodi or Horse dance performance during Shigmo

The city celebrates all major festivals, here are some special ones that we recommend.

New Year at Miramar Beach

Start your new year by witnessing the fireworks at Miramar Beach. You not only see the fireworks of Miramar but also see the panorama of fireworks on the northern beaches of the state.

This is a folk festival when artists from around the country come and perform at Kala Academy for a good 10 days or so. It is a cultural riot with an equally happening market where you can buy products from across India. The cherry on this cake is the street food of India that is usually not available in the state.

Viva Goa Carnival

Celebrated in the month of Feb this is well, a carnival. The main street is full of colorful floats and there are song and dance all around. King Momo rules for 3 days and his orders are – eat, drink, and be merry.

Read more –   Viva Carnival

This is personally my favorite Goa festival. 18th June Road reverberates with traditional music. Festivities roll and the audience on both sides of the road enjoy. This is the Holi Time festival of the state.

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with fervor in the city. Public Pandals are set up in various parks. A peculiar thing to notice in Ganesh Pandals of the city is the Matoli made with fruits, vegetables, and local herbs.

Anant Chaturdashi

One of the biggest houses in the city – the Mamai Kamat house opens its doors for everyone to celebrate this festival. Any number of those who come are served a multi-course meal. This is quite a unique way to celebrate this September festival.

Narkasur Chaturdashi

This is the way the city celebrates Diwali. Children get together to create the demon Narkasur only to burn it down on the last day.

IFFI – International Film Festival of India

In November, the city plays host to the biggest film festival in India. Venues like Kala Academy, ESG, and INOX theater are full of cinema lovers. The main street is decorated and the weather is just perfect to move around.

This is your chance to rub shoulders with whos who of the film industry and watch some of the world’s best cinema.

GALF – Goa Arts and Literary Festival

December brings literature and art lovers together at ICG for 4 days. Talks, panel discussions, workshops, art exhibitions, networking, bookstores, and book launches – there is so much for literature lovers to look forward to.

The Churches of the state are a sight to see during Christmas. We usually go for a drive to see the churches and the Cribs that dot the city. It is interesting to see the creative displays every year – many of them floating in the water.

Public Spaces – Places to visit in Panjim

Sunapranta - Places to visit in Panjim

The capital of the state is always buzzing with activities that include public performances or talks. Here are some of the places you should check out:

Kala Academy

This is a well-designed Academy with multiple auditoriums. It plays host to all kinds of concerts, plays, and festivals. On the banks of River Mandovi just as it merges with the Arabian Sea, it is a good place to watch the sunset or to enjoy the activities.

Check out the Kala Academy Website for the latest events.

International Center, Goa

Located near Dona Paula, ICG is home to Goa Art and Literary Festival which is held in December. The rest of the year too, it has talks, workshops, and quizzes. Check out their events calendar – ICG .

This Palacious Goan house in blue and white on top of Altinho Hill is home to art shows and has a film screening every Wednesday. Their cafe is perfect for you to sit back relax or even work from. They hold an annual Sensorium festival. Check out what Sunapranta has to offer when you are visiting the city.

Goa State Library

Goa State Library is not just the best public library in India. It is also home to the state’s Art & Culture department. See our detailed post on State Public Library .

Menezes Braganza Hall

This is a favorite venue for local events. Check out the local newspaper for what is happening. During the day, you can buy homemade stuff like Pickles and Sweets sold by women’s self-help groups. This long yellow building is also home to Goa Police Headquarters. The entrance to Menezes Braganza Hall has Goa’s best Azulezos paintings – handmade in Blue & White.

This long yellow building is also home to the State Police Headquarters.

Fundaco Oriente

A quaint art gallery in Fontainhas that hosts occasional talks and art shows.

Broadway Books – The best place to get books on the state or by Goan authors. They have two outlets in the city – one on 18th June road and the other in Caculo Mall – I love going to the former which has an old-world charm and a much bigger collection.

Singhbal’s Book Store – opposite the main Church Square – a lovely building in White and Blue.

Bookworm is a lovely children’s library and bookstore in Taleigao.

Of course, there is a crossword for regular bestsellers.

However, what we recommend is a visit to Goa State Library, Saraswati Library on June 18th Road and a 100+-year-old reading room in Fontainhas.

This is where you can go to pick up your Panaji Souvenirs.

  • Mario Miranda Gallery near Panaji Church
  • Wendell Rodricks Boutique in Campal
  • Zantye for Cashew and Kokum Sherbet
  • Municipal Market / Fish Market – more for street photography

Years back I came to Panjim with my family. After that I have only been to the other side of Goa. Your book recommendations are fab 🙂 I have bookmarked for future Goa travels and hope we can connect someday in person?? what does Sunapranta mean?

Ishita, as and when you come to Goa, would take you around for a heritage walk.

Suna means golden and Apranta means beyond the Prant or limits of the kingdom. Sunaprant is a local word used to describe Goa meaning Golden region.

Go has the best public library in India – I sometimes go and work from there. It is a must visit for all Bibliophiles.

Nice post dear, travel to Panaji – great place to visit in India……

Thank you, Suchana.

Unique information which i have never known before about this place. Pictures look amazing. Very informative article.

Glad you liked the post, Jahnavi.

Nice and precise. You covered almost everything there is. Maybe the kids parks, I would add. And the mall ???? Also a few more places to eat like viva Panjim and venite in the fontainhas area.

Thanks, Kuheli. Kids parks – yes can be added. Shopping mall – I would skip, there is nothing for a traveler there. I have written places that I have tried myself. The restaurants will get added as I visit them.

hi, we are planning to be in aldona for 3 nights starting 18th oct 2017- staying in a homestay. was keen to do my bit of building excitement for my kids by mixing fun and education. I know that Goa has a rich history and it will be worth discovering it at least now (der aaye durust aaye). A friend recommended Panjim, Fontanhas. ferry across the mandovi and Reis Margos. The walk mentioned in your blog seems very interesting. Please let me know if you can help.

Muthu Ji, There are 50+ posts on IndiTales on offbeat things to do in Goa. Please read them for details and if you have a specific question – I would be happy to answer that.

Just what I needed as I travel to Goa next week 🙂

Perfect Lata. Have a great trip.

I have only been to the state library because of my continued visits to the FRRO which is the whole police station complex. I was always in awe of the tile art on the wall and it’s definitely an insider tip for those who want to see more of the Portuguese side. Otherwise, I enjoy Miramar too, just to hang out and there are a few lovely boutiques there. Ultimately my husband family has got a few relations in Miramar and that’s why we would go there more frequently in the past.

Helene, now you should come more often to Miramar, for we live close to it. I love visiting the library – sometimes I work from there and it is like having a huge co-working space to yourself.

My sister had her destination wedding in Goa and it was absolutely stunning. I was so sad to leave because I wanted to explore the area properly! The food was amazing, the people were so incredibly friendly, and it had the most wonderful vibes. This post has made me want to return even more – I’ll definitely be visiting some of the places you’ve mentioned!

Malvika, Come back soon. There is so much more to Goa than its beaches, which we all know are beautiful.

Wow, what an informative blog post – you really covered all the bases! It actually makes me really disappointed in myself because I visited Goa a few years back and I don’t think I saw any of the amazing sights that you have listed. And the festivals – I’m DEFINITELY going to have to go back to check out those!

Come back fast, Valerie. Some of the festivals are definitely worth a special trip. My favorite is Shigmo.

Wow that a really complete list ! Really nice put down, Panjim sure seems like a great place to visit, I had no idea they were so much to do, always nice to learn more ! 🙂

Lyne, Most tourists in Goa miss visiting Panaji. I hope this would bring some of them to my lovely little town.

I think ‘Der Aaye, Durust Aaye’ needs to be my new motto in life, I love it! Panjim sounds like an incredible place, I hope I’ll get to visit someday. The heritage walk looks very beautiful, I would love to see those colourful houses and steep staircases in person.

Phoebe – Come over. Winters is a good time to visit Goa.

Goa, and now Panjim, has been on my travel bucket list for a while. I would love to do the Fontainhas heritage walk and check out the beaches at sunset. It looks like one should plan at least a couple of days to experience all of Panjim.

Linda – 2 days is a good time to explore Panaji.

The church and the beach are on the top of my list. That sunset is gorgeous ????

They are not too far apart…

This is a comprehensive list!!!! Thanks for the in depth Dissection of Panjim! Keeping this article for future reference!

Thank you, Bonita. Glad that you find it useful.

Exceptionally well written content to say the least..Panjim indeed is the heart of Goa..Informative at the same time. Personally I feel private and custom tours at Panjim always come up with best results for it’s personalized and brings in comfort for the tourist.

Thank you, Patrali.

I love how colorful everything is. Just screams of LIFE! This is so very comprehensive and I love that you put all your love into writing about a place you call home.

Thank you, Ariana. Sometimes, you need an outsider’s eyes to look at your own home.

Oh my there is so much to do there! That Excise Museum, all about smuggling, it sounds really interesting. So cool to know this place celebrates its history so much. I dream about coming here someday.

Time to plan a trip to Goa and Panjim, Megan.

Loved the post. Thanks a lot for all info’s. Amazing pics.

Thank you, Rupam.

I feel like sometimes the places we know best are the bardest to write about, but I am so glad you did. Between the beaches and views and museums and architecture, I feel like I would never get bored here. Love the Portugese inspired buildings and have been dying to go since my friend said she grew up there!! Thanks for a great share!

Kelly, we came here with the intention to live for a year, but it will be 4 years in January and we want to live nowhere else. Panaji has a perfect balance of nature, heritage, culture, happening events despite being a small town.

You are so right that we take our homeland for granted. If one explores, can really be surprised with what your own city has to offer. You have covered everything in your post. I love Goa and bought a house in Goa recently though not sure if I will live there. Those pictures of sunset are simply magnetic. A great amalgamation of nature, heritage and that awesome laid back feel.

Thanks, Monica. Goa is lovely to live although I have written extensively about all the cities I have lived in – Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune.

I’m actually really sad that I missed out on Goa while in India. I hear it’s absolutely beautiful and has the best vibes! Definitely an excuse for me to head back 🙂

Come back soon. Both Goa and India have a lot to offer to the travelers.

Good informative blog. We have moved to panjim from mumbai since a year now. There is so much that we haven’t covered. I would like to add forest garden next to kala Acadamy to the list. Its really nice place specially for kids and evening walk. And cafe George opp panjim church for authentic goan food.

Thank you, Pritam. Bhagwan Mahavir Park is the Forest Garden 🙂 I will try Cafe George and add it to the post. Thank you for adding. Do let us know anything else you discover in Panjim that we can add to the post.

We moved here almost 4 years back but are still discovering this small city.

My partner and spent a few nights in Panji in August this year and we both fell in live with it! He’s from Udaipur in Rajasthan and had never been before, and I’m from Australia and I went to Panji 6 years ago, but I didn’t go to Fontainhas – I don’t know why. We had a beer at two lovely bars – Hotel Venite and Joseph’s Bar. We loved Panji! …but I wish I had seen your post before we went. I’ve saved it to read for the next time we go!

Verity, we look forward to have you in Panaji. There is a lot more to this tiny city surrounded by water all around.

Yes, I think there’s a lot more to discover! I think we both thought that maybe we would like to live there one day. Thanks again.

Verity, you would not believe – I am visiting Canada & met an old friend who just said the same. He would like to spend his old days in Panjim.

Hi, an informative and we’ll written post. When is Lokotsav held?

Thank you, Dilip. Lokotsava happens in January sometime. You have to check the newspapers for the exact date in January.

Heavenly place, I stayed for a year at Miramar beach area. Most peaceful and calm area. Once we step in not possible to step back.

Right Sir, Miramar beach is beautiful & Panjim is a lovely place to live.

Wow, I lived in Goa for 2 years and still didn’t know about some of these attractions. Lovely post. The images of Fontainhas are beautiful.

Thanks, Priya. Glad you enjoyed Inditales.

Nice presentation but I find missing a map indicating the various sites. Would save time (enquiring where),would save money (would not need to hire rickshaw or taxi) because you could do it on your own.

Thanks for your suggestion, we will try and add a map as soon as we find some time to do it.

Unique information which I really don’t know about this earlier. It’s very nice post also the way you define the beautiful picture’s it’s looking awesome. Thanks.

How much I need to see old Panji?

You can see it well in a couple of days or even a day.

Panaji , also spelt Panjim , is the capital city of the tiny state of Goa in India . It has its own charm, a river flowing along one side of the city, some areas which are low-rise and red-roofed, and even a Latin Quarter at the eastern end of town. Increasingly, it is shaping itself as a centre where cultures (many from around the globe, and from diverse areas of India too) meet and creativity flourishes.

By plane [ edit ].

The nearest airports are Dabolim Airport ( GOI  IATA , 35 km) and Manohar Parrikar International Airport ( GOX  IATA ).

By train [ edit ]

The nearest railway station is 15.490458 73.924535 1 Karmali (IR station code: KRMI ), about 10 km to the east, but many express trains do not halt there. A more important railhead is Madgaon Junction , 45 km to the south, being the main junction on the Konkan Railway all trains stop here.

From the railway station, taxis, rickshaws and buses go to Panaji, but if you are carrying only a backpack, motorcycle taxis are a bargain, plus you get to ride on the pillion seat! Be sure to fix fares before the ride. If you are on a tight budget, and carrying little baggage, you could take the local bus. To get to the bus stop, get out of the Karmali station, a short climb and across the road is the bus stop. Wait across the road for busses going towards Panaji. There is no sign board marking the Bus stop.

On the first floor of the KTC Bus stand at Panaji is the Konkan Railway ticketing office, you can make or cancel all Indian Railway tickets here. A ₹10 service fee is levied on each transaction, which is well worth it, as it saves you making a trip to Karmali, Thivim or Madgaon station to do ticketing work. The ticketing office is air conditioned, has seats, and issues tokens, so you don't have to stand in a queue awaiting your turn. The counter is open from 8AM to 6PM on weekdays.

By bus [ edit ]

Panaji is connected with the state of Karnataka to the south and Maharashtra to the north by winding highways.

A wide range of buses are available. The non air-conditioned, state transport bus, that though cheap is an interesting way to travel, if you don't mind the discomfort of a rattling bus body, rigid seats, over crowding and stopping at umpteen villages and bus depots along the route. You could also take a reserved ticket, which assures you of a seat, though is no protection against over crowding. Locals usually share seats. The state transport corporations, also have semi-luxury and luxury buses. Luxury meaning the seats are padded and recline.

The major state transport corporations operating in Goa are the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC), from Goa, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), from Maharashtra, and the Karnataka State Road Transport from Karnataka. All the state transport buses, usually begin and terminate at the Kadamba bus stand at Panaji. Bookings, time tables etc. can be had here.

Dozens of semi-luxury and luxury buses also connect Panaji with Mumbai, Pune, Mangalore, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. A relatively comfortable option is the Air conditioned Volvo coaches that operate towards the later hours. Find out prices before you purchase a ticket, as it is not uncommon to find that your neighbour on the bus has paid a much higher or lower price for the ticket. Many travel agents have their offices in the building adjacent to the Kadamba bus stand.

A famous romantic Bollywood film, Bombay to Goa starring the Indian super star Amitabh Bachchan, was based on this bus journey.

All private buses leave from the bus stand at the beginning of the Mandovi bridge. Bus departures start daily from 4PM and go on till almost 10PM when the last Volvo coaches leave.

By car [ edit ]

  • NH-17 (National Highway-17) passes through Panaji. (This is the route buses will take while coming down from Mumbai ). The route is scenic, and roads in good condition compared with other routes, but narrow and risky along part of the journey, so driving down is not recommended unless you are used to Indian roads. A detour from NH-17 towards Kolhapur joins you to the Expressway and further on to the Mumbai Pune Expressway. Take this route if you intend including Lonavala, Khandala or Pune on your itinerary. The expressway is also faster and safer, though the additional distance will not save you much time.
  • NH-4A connects to the NH-17 from Panaji. This is the main highway connecting Goa with the state of Karnataka. Be prepared for a rattling travel, as the road condition has deteriorated beyond repair on a 20 km stretch near Anmod, as soon as you enter Karnataka. The Government of Karnataka has neglected this important tourist link, which connects Goa with world heritage sites at Badami, Pattadkal and Hampi. This road is one of the reasons why Karnataka lost the Tata Nano project to Gujarat, as its bad condition almost deprived Dharwad of the nearest port facility.
  • From Mumbai - Take NH4 or the new Expressway towards Pune, Kolhapur. After Kolhapur, continue on Nh4 for 25 km, then pass the town of Nipani, then climb up a hill, and the take right towards Ajra, Sawantwadi via Amboli ghat. This will take you through Uttur, Ajra, Amboli, & finally Sawantwadi - in about 3-4 hours. After reaching Sawantwadi continue south on NH17 towards Panaji. Sawantwadi to Panaji is about 60 km; you will pass through Mapusa and you could take a detour to Calangute, Baga, Vagator. The time from Mumbai to Pune is approximately 3-4 hours. Pune - Kolhapur is approximately 3-4 hours and Kolhapur to Panaji via Sawantwadi is 4 hours.
  • From Mumbai - Take the Pune Expressway, exit at Panvel. Take NH-17 South and continue for 600 km down south to Panaji. You will pass through Mahad, Khed, Chiplun, Vengurla, Sawantwadi and finally into Panaji. NH-17 is a narrow, winding road and expect to travel at an average of 50 km/hour.

  • Don't miss out on the old city .
  • See the islands that are just across the river. It only takes a couple of minutes to cross on the car ferry, and on the other side there are unpopulated fields of high marsh grass, sweeping views and utter peacefulness. To access the islands go to Ribandar, on the road to Old Goa, and take the ferry at Ribandar going to Chorao. Or go further down, just past the Goa Institute of Management and take the other ferry. The ferry service is free to passengers, though cars, motorcycles and other vehicles pay a small fee. The islands can also be accessed from the Ferry crossing at Old Goa, behind the Church Complex, also a calm spot for a bit of fishing.
  • Miramar Beach - A lovely golden beach of soft sand girdled with palm trees. The main beach outside of state-capital Panaji. The usual hangout for urbanites from Panaji and around, and also for 'desi' (domestic, Indian) tourists visiting the region. Try the fast-food of both Goan origin. D'Silva's , serves delicious authentic Goan snacks opposite the children's park, just past the roundabout. The place is obscure and easy to miss out. For other Indian snacks, Chaat (Bhel Puri) and Mid-East shwarma-based food go a little ahead on the beachside stalls. Cafe Coffee Day is a hip hang out for the younger set. Nice playground for kids, including a giant fish made of cement.
  • Dona Paula A beach outside Panaji and beyond Miramar. This is where so many Bollywood (Hindi) films have been shot. No wonder it is hyped up among Hindi film audiences. Scenic. In fair weather, a boat service connects this point with Vasco da Gama.
  • 15.49294 73.833255 3 Goa State Museum , Panaji, Patto, ( Former EDC Complex ). Hindu and Jain sculptures, including bronzes, from the 4th to the 8th centuries. The proprietor, Linda, makes the rounds to chat and make sure people are happy. The food is delicious, and authentic (read spicy).

Drink [ edit ]

There are lots of places in Goa where one can find a bar and restaurant. There's one around every corner of every road. Visitors arriving in Goa during the very early hours, stand a better chance of getting a tipple than a cuppa.

Many small village bars also serve authentic Goan fare. Some of the best and freshest fish curry and rice and fried fish, squid, mussels, crabs etc. can be had here. You can be sure it is authentic Goan fare as few tourists visit these places. Most of these bars offer a quiet laid back atmosphere to sip your drink and contemplate, unless of course a Cricket match is on television.

  • 15.499004 73.833425 1 Down The Road , at Pato Bridge, GM road . The other landmark is the general post office, 20 meters down to the bridge. The ground floor is a bar with Kala OK. The restaurant is at the 1st floor. The menu is GOA flavor and also Indian and Chinese food. • Rajshahi Restaurant , G1 G2 G3 Karmally Glass towers ( Opp. Traffic Police Station ), ☏ +91 2421426 . 11AM-11PM . Muglai and Punjabi food. ₹150/head .
  • Spicy Bella Bar & Restaurant , opp Campal Parade Gground, Bal Bhavan Rd ( on the way to miramar beach ), ☏ +91 6454710 . 24 hrs . The speciality of this restaurant is Italian Pizzas and Pasta, which you have to try. The ‘Spicy Bella Pizza’ shown at the right is unarguably the best Italian pizza you can get around Panaji. It will keep you wanting for more. The other Italian pizzas are a bit plain, and go for those only if you have an appetite for Italian pizzas specifically. If you love Domino’s and US pizzas, it is likely that you won’t like the usual Italian ones. The menu hosts an exotic list of pasta dishes. Since every pasta dish is totally different, we can’t comment much on their taste in general. The quantity is good enough for 2 people though. And with every pasta or pizza, you get about 4 different spices and pepper sauce. The drinks menu lists about 6-7 mocktails, but if you let them know that you’re all in for moctails, you will be presented with the bartender’s special menu with super exotic ones and all kinds of combinations such as kiwi juice with blue crush, pineapple juice with coconut cream and so on. We tried some cool ones. In the adjoining photo, the leftmost one is “Mickey donald”, with a dominant pineapple taste and an hint of strawberry and cream. Prefect for pineapple lovers. The one in the middle is ‘Pink Blossom’ from the regular menu. It has a combination of pineapple, orange and litchi. The one that took the longest to make is the one at the right, called ‘Spring Cooler’. It is a unique blend of juices, cream, and crush. Overall, we can say that Spicy Bella has the most exotic list of mocktails on the menu.

Best Things To Do In Panaji/ Panjim

1. walk the latin quarter aka fontainhas.

Fontainhas latin quarters

Fontainhas is an area in Panjim where you’ll see charming homes and buildings and is a retreat for anyone who loves good architecture. The narrow streets have various colorful constructions that will leave you mesmerized. The quaint lanes have cafes where you can enjoy the food and almost every other building in the place acts as a backdrop for a Gram-worthy photo. Some of the buildings in Fontainhas have balconies with wrought-iron railings and walls with colored tiles.

With many boutique hotels, art galleries, and restaurants opening up in the area, Fontainhas has become a thriving tourist destination in Goa.

2. Go On Church Hopping

Church hopping at Old Goa

Old Goa or Velha Goa is a historic town located about 10 km from Panaji. It was the capital of Portuguese India from the 16th to the 18th century, and today it is home to one of the UNESCO world heritage sites known for its picturesque churches and other historic buildings.

A trip to Goa is incomplete without visiting these beautiful spiritual places of old Goa. We went on a spree and visited numerous churches. The places were so fascinating we wrote an exclusive guide on churches in old Goa .

3. Play In A Casino

casino in Panaji

Along the Mandovi River in Panjim, several casinos can be found with a lot of entertainment activities. Featuring restaurants and bars, they offer a range of games including roulette, baccarat, blackjack, slot machines, and poker to name a few. The experience is fun and one must definitely visit them once irrespective of the taboo around the subject. Just go in, have a gala time, and head on your way. It is important to note that visitors must be at least 21 years old to enter the casinos.

4. Go On A Goan Feni & Tapas Food Trail

Goan Feni is a popular alcoholic drink that is made from fermented cashew fruit or coconut sap. It is a traditional drink in Goa, and it is often enjoyed during festivals and other celebrations. The strong spirit has an alcohol content ranging from 40 to 43 percent.

The tapas dishes are often a fusion of Spanish and Indian cuisine and may include dishes such as prawn skewers, chicken tikka, and vegetable fritters. Tapas are often served with Feni or other alcoholic drinks, making for a great culinary and drinking experience in Goa.

5. Tour Divar Island And Chorao Island

Ferry service at Goa

Divar Island is a tranquil and scenic island popular for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The island is accessible by ferry from Old Goa and offers visitors a chance to experience a laid-back way of life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The island is known for its picturesque villages, historic churches, and serene natural landscapes, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers.

Chorao Island, on the other hand, is known for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, home to a variety of bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and egrets. The island is accessible by ferry from Ribandar, and visitors can take a boat ride through the mangrove forests to spot birds and other wildlife. Chorao Island also has several churches and temples with an incredible past, as well as a traditional Goan village vibe. The isle is perfect for those interested in the culture and heritage of the region.

Both Divar Island and Chorao Island are easily accessible from Panaji and are popular day trip destinations for visitors to Goa.

6. Eat At Joseph’s Bar

Joseph bar, Panaji

St. Joseph’s Bar is particularly popular among locals and is known for its lively atmosphere and friendly regulars. Serving for more than 60 years, the bar is a great place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing or meeting new people and making new friends.

The bar is also an amazing spot for tasting the local beer Susegao and a locally made glass of Kombucha (Borécha). Located in the heart of the city in Fontainhas, it is a hotspot for tourists who want a casual drink or a few quick bites. Be sure to try some of the city’s specialties which blend Indian and Portuguese flavors, such as vindaloo, xacuti, and bebinca.

7. Dona Paula View Point

Dona Paula, Goa

The village once called Oddavell got its name changed after Dona Paula, a Portuguese woman who worked towards the upliftment of the villagers. The viewpoint offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and Mormugao Harbour. Several benches and seating areas are available at the viewpoint, built just for you to enjoy the sunset, making it an excellent picnic spot. If you’re someone who likes to be enveloped by the serenity of nature, this must be on your list. The Dona Paula beach is also located nearby, in case you want to dip your feet in the water.

Another notable aspect of the Dona Paula View Point is the Knox statues. The locals and tour guides always tell that the statue is of Dona Paula. However, interestingly, according to author Heta Pandit, the statue is of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Knox. In her book, “Walking in Goa” she mentions how a Dutch sculptress, Yrse Von Leistner, carved the sculptures of the couple because she was in awe of the two philosophers.

things to do and places to visit in panjim panaji goa

Goa’s capital city, Panjim (Panaji) offers the best insight into the states unique history and culture, and there are many things to do in Panjim.

Goa is mainly famous for its beaches and parties, but there’s so much more to explore in Goa. Most tourists only visit Goa’s beaches but if you don’t explore beyond the beach then you simply haven’t seen the real Goa!

It’s such a shame that not so many people take the time to explore the beautiful and magical Goan countryside, wildlife sanctuaries, markets, temples and churches and historic sites.

There’s so many things to do in Panjim and the central goa hinterland – its definitely worth prising yourself away from the beach for a day or 2 and making time for Panjim in your Goa itinerary.

The Best Things to do in Panjim (Panaji) Goa’s Colourful Capital

panaji tourist points

Why you need to visit Panjim

Goa’s capital is a pleasant, colourful and historic city, probably the most pleasant capital city I’ve seen yet in India. Panjim is now called Panaji, but most people still call it the old name Panjim.

There are so many things to do in Panjim including iconic landmarks, heritage walks, churches, temples, beaches, museums, Goan restaurants and colourful Portuguese backstreets.

Panjim also makes a great base from which to explore the other amazing cultural and natural heritage sites of Central Goa including the UNESCO listed churches at Old Goa, the spice plantations, wildlife sanctuaries and waterfalls – all of these are easy day trips from Panjim.

Staying in Panjim will also give you a glimpse of a very different Goa away from the crowded and touristy beaches.

If you want to make your trip to Goa complete then get off the beach and visit Panjim and Central Goa!

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church

If you only see 1 site in Panjim then make it this – the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church. This colonial Portuguese church is the spiritual and geographical center of Panjim.

A chapel was first built here in 1540 and then in 1619 the church you see today was built. This church was the first port of call when sailing to Lisbon when Panjim was just a small fishing village. It wasn’t until the 1850 that the land in front of the church was reclaimed and the criss cross stairs were added.

This is a beautiful Baroque style church that sits on a hill overlooking Panjim like a fancy stacked white wedding cake. It’s painted a bright white colour and features zig-zag stairs that are lined with swaying palm trees and is also colourful and interesting inside.

It’s no surprise its one of the most photographed landmarks in the city, and a lovely place to admire not only from below, but also while ascending the stairs. Another thing I really enjoyed were the views of the city below. The church is also beautiful illuminated at night – definitely one of the very best things to do in Panjim.

If you get peckish while you’re here there are a few cafes nearby – try tasty veg food at the Kamath Hotel (Restaurant), or have a drink and some non veg Goan food at the George Bar and Restaurant

Althinto Hill

This hillside area is home to some of Goa’s most elite residents. It’s also a great place for an afternoon wander. Althinto Hill is home to the imposing 19 th century Bishop’s Palace , which dates back to 1893 and was regarded as the finest property in Goa during Portuguese times.

It’s also where the Pope stayed on his 1999 visit to Goa. Another reason why I recommend the neighbourhood in my list of things to do in Panjim is for its magnificent views over Panjim and the Goan countryside.

Maruti Temple

The Maruti Temple is a stunning terracotta-coloured temple that’s dedicated to Hanuman; a Hindu deity that was devoted to Rama. The temple sits atop the Altinho hillock overlooking Fontainhas and is accessible by walking along the old Margao road. It is especially exceptional at night when it’s all lit up and glimmers like a gem.

Eat at Hotel Venite

No list of things to do in Panjim would be complete without eating traditional Goan food! Hotel Venite on 31st January Road is a popular, legendary restaurant that has been serving traditional Goan cuisine since 1955 .

The vegetable vindaloo, spicy Portuguese-inspired  chouricos  (spiced sausages) and masala prawns are my favourites. It’s one of the most atmospheric restaurants in Panjim with it’s charming and quirky décor and the cute lit-up balconies that overlook the street are a great place to watch the world go by.

There’s also a thriving cafe culture in Panjim with plenty of cute and cosy places to hang out with great coffee and delicious cakes. You can even try pasteis de nata right here in Goa due to it’s historic ties with Portugal. Here’s an insider’s list of the best cafes in Panjim to try.

Fountainhas & Sao Tome Heritage Walk

Fountainhas is the oldest neighbourhood in Panjim and known as the old Latin Quarter. Exploring this area is one of the best things to do in Panjim.

Fountainhas is filled with picturesque colourful architecture, narrow winding streets and loads of charm. At the very south end of this old quarter is a small square that’s dominated by the Chapel of St Sebastian. The square is a nice place to sit and read a book.

It’s also worthwhile to pop into the Gitanjali Gallery to have a look at the artwork or have a coffee in the café.

At the very north end of Fountainhas is Sao Tome, another lovely neighbourhood that boasts picturesque houses painted in pastel colours. This old quarter is centred around Panjim’s main post office, which was once a tobacco trading house.

A heritage walk along the narrow roads and winding streets in both of these neighbourhoods makes for a fantastic afternoon. We went on the heritage walk with Make it Happen. If you really want to learn more and get under the skin of Goa’s history then you can also take a tour of Panjim’s heritage with an archaeologist .

Kala Academy

Kala Academy is a prestigious cultural centre that is run by the government. It is home to numerous auditoriums and hosts all kinds of plays, concerts and art shows. Check out their website to see whats on.

The Kala Academy is situated on the banks of the River Mandovi right where it meets the Arabian Sea, making it a good place to watch the sunset over the water. Beforehand, I recommend heading to the nearby Campal Gardens for a picnic lunch, a stroll through the gardens or to enjoy the views over Reis Magos Fort.

Floating Casino

Gambling is illegal in most states of India, but not in Goa, so its not surprising that visiting a casino is one of the most popular things to do in Panjim. There are some casinos in upmarket hotels but by law they can only have electronic games. The floating casinos in Goa on boats anchored in the Mandovi River have all the games.

There are several floating casinos within easy reach of Panjim – the most popular ones include the Deltin Royale and Casino Pride. You have to pay an entrance fee but you’ll get drinks, snacks and some playing chips included. You can try your luck at Blackjack, Roulette, Bacarrette, Stud Poker or Rummy, or use the electronic slots.

The views from then upper deck of the yacht are magnificent. There is also a pretty good restaurant, music and entertainment and a sundeck bar, which is a nice place to watch the sunset. Check out this article for more info on Goa’s casinos.

River Cruise

Another one of the top things to do in Panjim is taking a river cruise along the Mandovi. Boats leave from either the Santa Monica Boat Jetty or the Panaji Jetty and go on a tranquil cruise along the river.

You can do a quick one-hour cruise or a two-hour dinner cruise. There are also two-hour back river cruises that run twice a week. Music and cultural dancing is always part of the journey.

The most popular river cruises are the sunset cruises which includes dinner, drinks, music and entertainment. This sunset cruise and Panjim at night tour also takes you to see the illuminated Church and Maruti temple.

Goa State Museum

Indian musesums don’t normally match up to the standard of museums in the West, but of all of the museums in the city, the Goa State Museum is worth a visit and its free to enter. There are three sections of the museum; Art and Craft, Ancient History and Archaeology, and Geology which together contain around 8,000 artefacts.

This includes an impressive sculpture of Lord Vishnu, hero stones that date back to the King Biravarma period and a beautiful wooden chariot. I found the furniture room the most interesting. See more info on their website.

panaji tourist points

Miramar Beach and Dona Paula

The other beaches of Goa are more well known but you don’t have to miss the beach when in Panjim. These two beaches are a must for anyone visiting Panjim – Miramar Beach and Dona Paula.

Miramar is the busier of the two and the main beach of the city. It is the beach that many Goa locals and domestic tourists hang out.

Just beyond it is Dona Paula, which is famous for its sunsets. It is also where Raj Bhavan is located, which is the official residence of the Governor of Goa.

Eat at Mum’s Kitchen

Mum’s Kitchen is another of the most popular places to eat in Panjim. It’s won many awards and is famous for it’s seafood. The restaurant was created to preserve traditional Goan family recipes that have been handed down through Goan families and are served up in a charming, rustic, homely ambience. Check out their website for more.

Celebrate Carnival

The Goa Viva Carnival is celebrated every year in late February/ early March time as a last opportunity for excess before lent and is one of the most colourful festivals you can go to.  The entire main street is closed off to traffic and instead it is filled with colourful floats and people that sing and dance in the street.

The first float is always the float with King Momo, who declares that everyone should eat, drink and be merry. And this is exactly what everyone does during Goa Viva Carnival. It’s one of the very best things to do in Panjim so book accommodation well in advance if you’re coming for carnival.

Best Things to do in Panjim (Panaji) in central Goa

Day Trips and Tours from Panjim

As well as the many things to do in Panjim, the city also makes a great base for exploring some of the best cultural and natural sites in Central Goa like the UNESCO listed churches at Old Goa, spice plantations and waterfalls.

Many of these can be easily done as a day trip from Panjim so if you feel like getting out of the city for a day, these are a few things to do outside of Panjim.

UNESCO Old Goa Churches

Goa was under Portugese rule for about 500 years, and this influence can still be seen in Goa’s food, culture, religion and architecture but the most impressive place to see the Portugese legacy is at Old Goa. This place used to be so important that it rivaled Lisbon but all that is left now is the churches of Old Goa, most of which are now UNESCO sites and are one of the best things to do in Goa.

Old Goa was once so grand that it was pegged the ‘Rome of the East’. It was also the old capital city of the province before it was moved to Panjim in 1843, leaving behind many magnificent old churches, including the largest in all of Asia – Se Cathedral.

It’s easy to just get a taxi there but you will miss out on learning about the history of this place which brings it alive. If you want to know the stories behind the old churches you can take a private half-day Portuguese heritage tour.

Or you could make a full day of it and combine a tour of Old Goa with visiting a spice plantation for lunch and a crocodile spotting river cruise. See details here.

panaji tourist points

Ponda Spice plantations

One of the most popular Goa day trips is a visit to a spice planatiaon. Just 28 kilometres outside of Panjim is Ponda where you’ll find a couple of Spice Plantations that you can visit.

Sahakari Spice Farm is one of the most popular with 60 acres of organic spices, fruits, medicinal trees and herbs. Visiting the spice plantations are a treat for all your senses. They staff will take you for a tour around the luscious, fragrant, tropical and colourful plantation, giving you interesting facts about the spices and plants and teaching you how to climb a beetle nut tree.

There’s also a tasty Goan lunch included and you may get to see a folk dance and elephants. Check out their website for more info.

There are lots of tour options to the spice plantations. This is a good value for money tour to the spice plantations.  Or if you want to make your trip to the spice plantations a little more exciting you could take a crocodile spotting river cruise to the spice plantation.

There are also some interesting temples around the Ponda area – this spice plantation and temples tour allows you some culutre and spirituality along with your spice farm visit.

Dudhsagar Waterfall

At the very far corner of Goa in the jungle is the beautiful Dudhsagar Waterfall. This is the second highest waterfall in India and is best viewed after monsoon, when it is gushing with water, but really anytime you can enjoy the jeep safari adventure through the jungle, admire the waterfall and take a refreshing dip in the cool waterthe pool below the falls.

This great value Waterfall, Plantation and Old Goa tour   takes you on a jeep safari through Mollen National Park to Dudhsagar Waterfall, visits a luscious spice plantation, the churches of Old Goa and includes a traditional Goan lunch in 1 easy day trip.  See full details here.

Chorao and Divar Islands

Both of these inland islands are just a short boat ride away from Panjim, and both make for a great day trip and escape from the tourist crowds.  Explore villages with old mud and thatched houses, whitewashed churches and elegant Portuguese villas.

They are both tranquil and picturesque with some stunning countryside and will take you back into to time to experience what life was like hundreds of years ago.

This Divar Island tour takes you on the ferry to Divar island to discover historic villages, ancient temples and churches, holy sites and hidden caves and includes lunch at a local home and an amazing view over Old Goa’s churches.

If you’re feeling more active then one of the best ways to explore these sleepy and picturesque inland islands is on a  cycling tour!

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

This bird sanctuary actually takes up the entire western side of Chorao Island, though is a separate day trip all together. The sanctuary was named after naturalist Salim Ali, who was known as the ‘birdman of India’.

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is covered by low mangrove forest, which is the perfect habitat for western reef heron, striated heron, black bitten, jack snipe and red knot birds.

If you’re interested in more bird watching you might like this North Goa Bird Watching Tour which takes you to Socorro Plateau, Paithona Stream and Pilerne Lake to spot lots of exotic birds.

Where to Stay in Panjim

There are some great hotels and accommodation options in Panjim – from backpacker hostels to budget guesthouses, boutique and heritage hotels and even luxury resorts.

Panjim has some great heritage properties which have been converted into charming guesthouses and hotels which are full of character and history and make for a special and unique stay.

Luxury – The 5 Star Goa Marriott, Panjim

Located on Miramar Beach the Marriott is the best luxury hotel in Panjim. Rooms are stylish, modern, comfortable and there are great sea views from the pool and many excellent dining options.

The Cidade de Goa   is a uniquely designed, colourful 5 star beachfront resort in Dona Paula, 10 mins from Panjim. I love the Portuguese village style architecture and bright, colourful rooms with stunning sea views. There are 2 lovely outdoor pools, a spa and fitness centre and several restaurants.

Mid Range –  Hospedaria Abrigo De Botelho.

A cosy heritage guest house in Fontainhas with classic, simple, heritage style rooms complete with modern amenities and great hospitality.  I love the large doors that open out onto the small terrace balconies.

La Maison  is another great heritage hotel in the Latin quarter that mixes traditional charm with modern luxury. There’s only 8 rooms so you get a personalized experience and all the rooms contain restored antique furniture, impressive art work as well as mod cons. The European restaurant is also good.

Also located in Fontainhas is the Panjim Inn  – one of the first mansions in the area. It’s now an affordable heritage hotel with spacious rooms containing period furniture mixed with modern amenities and there is fine art and collectables displayed all over the property.

Budget – The Old Quarter Hostel

My favourite backpacker hostel and budget stay in Panjim is The Old Quarter by Hostel Crowd who run some of the most popular backpacker hostels in Goa. This comfy, clean and friendly hostel is located in Fontainhas, the old latin quarter of Panjim and has a cute coffee shop.

How to Reach Panjim

Panjim is conveniently located in the middle of Goa – it’s only 30 mins away from the beaches of Baga and Calangute and it shouldn’t take more than 1 1/2 hours max to reach even the further beach resorts of Palolem and Arambol. Cheap local buses run all across the state to the city so there’s no excuse to not visit!

Goa is India’s premier-league travel destination, attracting millions of tourists each year.

Located on the west coast of India, Goa is the smallest state, but packs a big punch. Loved your post.

Welcome aboard to your new home GOA and much appreciation on a very well written guide not only to foreign and Indian tourists but also Goans like me living overseas who have not discovered the many hidden treasures that Goa offers …thank you! Sorry state of affairs that the past and current Govt have not been able to offer world class beach amenities unlike Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia or even Sri Lanka. Our bitter experience begins at the international airport in Dabolim where private taxis rip tourists which is a SHAME and govts have failed in their responsibilities to address and stop this madness Rightly though the only pleasant experience is the warmth of the local Goan people whose memories one will cherish on the way back home.

Yes, I love Goa, it’s no Maldives but it has it’s authentic charm which I feel is missing from more developed tourist places like Maldives and Thailand.

Two Together

3 Days in Panaji, Goa

Last updated on

Often overlooked by visitors, Panaji is perhaps India’s most laidback state capital where lunches go on for hours and evenings are spent on the beach or by the riverside. There are lots of things to do in Panaji, much to see and eat too, for in this city, colonial-era buildings stand alongside modern architecture and heritage family-run restaurants rub shoulders with hipster joints. Then there’s Fontainhas, of course, whose pastel-coloured red-tiled houses and whitewashed churches are unabashedly Portuguese in look and temperament. Spend 3 days in Panaji for a taste of what this beautiful city has to offer .

PANAJI, GOA / INDIA

Panaji or Panjim, we wondered aloud minutes after disembarking from the bus that had brought us to the capital of Goa from Margao. It was the beginning of August. Rain clouds flecked the horizon. The bus station was empty except for a few bus drivers and hawkers who were prepping for the day. In the next two days over delicious curries and cans of chilled beer, we would learn that Panjim (the last ‘im’ that also appears in names of other Goan towns like Betim, Siolim, Candolim, etc. indicates a nasal ending, so the ‘m’ is never heard) is the older Portuguese name and the official name is Panaji. Locals usually pronounce it as ‘Ponnjee.’

Old Goa was one of the three principal cities in Portuguese Goa and Panjim, on the left bank of the Mandovi estuary, was originally a suburb of Old Goa. The city is laid out in a grid; the main roads run parallel with the seafront. In 1500, Yusuf Adil Shah of the Bijapur sultanate built a palace here that would later be seized by Albuquerque and renamed the Idalcao Palace. After malaria and cholera epidemics ravaged Old Goa, the Portuguese Viceroy moved to Panaji in 1759 but Old Goa continued to the  de jure capital of Goa until 1843.

Panaji has since grown into a beautiful city. A wide, leafy boulevard lined by grand colonial structures stretches along the Mandovi. Anchored in the river, are Goa’s famous offshore casinos, and beyond it, on the other bank, in Verem, is the Reis Magos Fort. The city is best known for Fontainhas, a neighbourhood of brightly painted Portuguese-style residences at the foot of the Altinho hill. This is where the city’s hostels and hipsters cafes, its art galleries and heritage eateries are located. The gastronomy scene is exciting with renowned restaurants like Mum’s Kitchen, Horse Shoe, Black Sheep Bistro, and Black Market catering to discerning food lovers who come from near and far. 3 days in Panaji is perfect for covering all main Panaji attractions and activities, exploring the city, and getting a taste of the local cuisine at heritage cafes and family-run restaurants.

3 Days in Panaji Itinerary: Day 1

AM // Start your 3 days in Panaji trip with a Goan breakfast at Café Real . Established in 1946 by Gajanan Shirodkar, the café is known for local favourites like puri bhaji . Get a plate of mirchi bhaji and samosas to go with it and a cup of tea to start your day.

Next stop: Church of Immaculate Conception . On the way, drop into Singbal’s Book House and pick up a book or two on Goa. A broad sweep of steps from the Largo da Igreja leads you to this 16-century church, the tall, Portuguese Baroque towers of which were originally built as a landmark for sailors. It was constructed in 1541 and enlarged in 1600 to reflect its status as the parish church of the capital. Resplendent in colours of Goan Catholicism: blue, white, and gold, the interiors are decorated with heavy chandeliers, gilded wood, and chintz. The two altars to Jesus the Crucified and Our Lady of the Rosary are flanked by marble statues of St Peter and St Paul.

Fontainhas , Goa’s Portuguese heart, is full of pastel-coloured houses featuring tiled roofs, seashell-studded windows, and overhanging balconies. Family-run restaurants, like the amazing Viva Panjim, and lovingly restored homestays, like Afonso’s and Mitaroy, all painted in bright colours, adorn the nooks and crannies of this neighbourhood. There are wishing wells and rainbow-coloured staircases, and further ahead in the Hindu neighbourhood of Mala, there’s a century-old reading room. Walking through Fontainhas is like walking in a world of Cadbury Gems: here’s a red one! here’s a yellow one! oooo, a blue one! look, there’s a purple one! For a self-guided walking tour, see our Fontainhas Walking Tour guide.

Stop by Confeitaria 31 de Janeiro , which has been treating locals to fresh bread and biscuits since 1930, for a snack: beef patties, pork rolls, pantheras , rissóis , and freshly baked cakes. Buy a packet of biscuits and a box of guava cheese to take home. There’s a store, Global to Local , on 31 de Janeiro where you can buy Goan pantry staples like kokum, triphal, and atom sola , spice mixes like recheado , traditional pickles, and local produce like bimbli . We love to explore local markets but we were short on time and this store was a wonderful alternative.

For lunch, either settle down at Viva Panjim , a family-run eatery serving delicious local fare like sorpotel and vindaloo that you can down with a shot of feni or walk to the Rua de Ourem, where at Horseshoe , Chef Vasco Silveira rustles up authentic Luso-Goan dishes like Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (local clams cooked with white wine) and Balchão de Camarão (prawns cooked in a shrimp and coconut feni sauce) for a loyal clientele.

Also read : Planning your next meal in Panaji? Read Where to Eat in Panaji for our favourite eateries in the city.

PM // Ride the local bus to Miramar Beach and settle down with locals and tourists to see the gorgeous sunset. Miramar Beach isn’t as pristine as other Goan beaches but it’s a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Panaji. Get a beach towel, settle down on the warm sands with some groundnuts, and watch as the sky breaks into shades of crimson. Hang out in the twilight, watching the moon climb the skies.

Later, settle down for dinner at Mum’s Kitchen . Voted one of India’s best restaurants, Mum’s Kitchen specializes in Goan Saraswat cuisine. Try regional specialities like the xagoti , khatkhatem , uddamethi , and ambotik and finish off with a slice of bebinca topped with ice cream.

If the night’s still too young for you, drop into Joseph Bar for a tipple!

3 Days in Panaji Itinerary: Day 2

AM // Start your day at the Mahalaxmi Temple . Built in 1818, the Mahalaxmi Temple was the first Hindu place of worship to be allowed in the Old Conquests. The idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi was initially worshipped in a temple in Taleigaon but the Brahmins, afraid of being persecuted, brought the idol to Mala from where Raghavendra Mhamei Kamat transported it under the cover of night to Bicholim. Years later, the Goddess appeared in a dream to another member of the influential Mhamei Kamat family who located the idol and with permission from the viceroy, Conde De Rio Pardo, established it in a temple built on land donated by the Sinari family of Ribandar.

Stop by the 300-year-old Boca de Vaca spring , so called because the water gushed out from the fountain through a conduit shaped like a cow’s mouth before heading up the heritage steps to the Bishop’s Palace in Altinho. There are six landings and from the top, you can enjoy lovely views of Panaji and the Mandovi river. At the top of the staircase is the Sunaparanta Café at the Goa Museum of Arts . Stop by for a quick breakfast, then explore the museum (and check if there are any events scheduled during your stay) before heading towards Bishop’s Palace , a 19th-century building which is the residence of the Archbishop of Goa. The magnificent coat and arms at the entrance belong to Goa’s first patriarch, Dom Antonio Sebastiao Valente. Linger awhile in their leafy neighbourhood, marvelling at the handsome mansions before heading down either the same flight of stairs that you took earlier or, if you want to head into Fontainhas again, down the colourful “Peacock” stairs near the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court.

For lunch, head to Kokni Canteen where you must order the fish thali. If you are feeling special, order the “ bappa ” thali that comes loaded with crab curry, prawn curry, mussels, and fried fish. Kokni Canteen specializes in coastal Konkani cuisine and serves some of the best seafood in Goa. From kismur to clams sukha , from mackerel curry to rawa -fried surmai , order your heart away!

PM // You have two options tonight!

Option 1 : In the evening, ride the bus to Our Lady of Penha de Franca Church . Then, settle down for a cosy dinner at the Black Market , one of our favourite restaurants in India.

Located at the confluence of the Mandovi and the Mapusa rivers and overlooking the island of Chorao, this grand church was originally built in 1626 and rebuilt in 1655. It is usually empty unless there’s a wedding or any other event going on. When we visited, there were a few local boys fishing. Otherwise, we had the place to ourselves. From a distance, the church looks ethereal: the red-tiled roof, the white façade popping out from a sea of lush vegetation. The silence, the solitary fishing boats, the tropical greenery of the riverbanks, the cool breeze skimming the slow waters of the Mandovi, and the sky shot with the crimson of sunset make for a magnificent setting.

For dinner, settle down at Black Market, the sister-restaurant of our beloved Black Sheep Bistro. Indulge in their superb cocktails and European-inspired fare cooked with only the seasonal, locally available ingredients.

Option 2 : Stroll down the riverside boulevard towards Tobacco Square , or Post Office Square, which is flanked by  Casa de Moeda  (literally ‘house of coins’) that functioned as the Mint of Goa from 1834 to 1841, the red and white buildings of the General Post Office, and the  São Tomé chapel  which was built in 1849 and renovated in 1902. The post office building started off as a depot for trading tobacco thus giving the square its name! On the way, stop by the statue of Abbe Faria , one of the pioneers of the scientific study of hypnotism, hypnotizing a woman. Across is the street is the Mhamei Kamat House , a beautiful residence that is open to the public on Ananth Chaturdashi. You can also walk to the Mermaid Garden which is known for a 5 ft long porcelain statue of a mermaid (probably installed sometime between 1939 and 1945 when Froilano de Melo was the president of the Camara municipal de Pangim) that was painfully restored by filmmaker, Shirish Desai and sculptor, Ghanshyam Anant Chari.

Anchored on the river are cruise ships with casinos on their decks. The offshore casinos were a way to bypass Indian laws that forbade gambling on Indian land but had no regulation as such about Indian waters. The laws have since changed but the offshore casinos continue to be one of Panaji’s prime attractions and bring in a lot of revenue for the state. If you are into gambling, give it a go. Else, opt for a dinner cruise on the Mandovi. Most of them include live cultural performances with local musicians belting out popular hits and dance troupes presenting Goan dances.

Book your stay in Panaji

3 days in panaji itinerary: day 3.

AM // After an early breakfast of puri bhaji at Café Bhonsle or at Café Tato , ride the local bus to old Goa. Goa Velha, or Old Goa, was the Portuguese capital in the east until malaria and cholera outbreaks forced them to abandon the city in the 17th century. In 1843, the capital was officially shifted to Panaji. Imposing churches and convents, some in ruins, others relatively well-preserved dot old Goa.

Start at Basilica de Bom Jesus which contains the tomb and mortal remains of St Francis Xavier. According to Lonely Planet, “The body was moved into the church in 1622, and installed in its current mausoleum in 1698 courtesy of the last of the Medicis, Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, in exchange for the pillow on which St Francis’ head had been resting. Cosimo engaged the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Batista Foggini to work on the three-tiered structure, constructed of jasper and marble, flanked with stars, and adorned with bronze plaques that depict scenes from the saint’s life. Topping it all off, and holding the shrivelled saint himself, is the casket, designed by Italian Jesuit Marcelo Mastrili and constructed by local silversmiths in 1659, whose sides were originally encrusted with precious stones which, over the centuries, have been picked off.”

Next, visit the Sé Cathedral , the largest church in Asia. The exterior, built in the Tuscan tradition, is solemn in its simplicity. Inside, there are four chapels, of which the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament is notable for its gilded ornamentation. Sé Cathedral is also known for the famous Sino de Ouro (Golden Bell), the largest in Asia. Renowned for its rich tone, it once tolled to accompany the Inquisition’s notoriously cruel autos-da-fé (trials of faith), held out the front of the cathedral on what was then the market square.

Next, visit the Church of St Francis of Assisi to see its beautiful woodwork and gilded walls and ceilings. From there, walk to the Church of St. Cajetan which was modelled on the original design of St Peter’s in Rome and the Archaeological Museum.

Then, visit the holy hill, at the top of which stands the only remaining tower of the Church of St. Augustine . Built in 1602 by Augustinian friars, one of the three great Augustinian churches in the Iberian world. It was abandoned in 1835 and by 1938, most of the church had collapsed. Standing on a high bluff and commanding excellent views of the Mandovi is the Manueline-style Church of Our Lady of the Rosary , one of Goa’s oldest churches and one of its best preserved. According to legends, Afonso de Albuquerque surveyed the action during his troops’ attack on the Muslim city from this bluff and vowed to build a church there in thanks for his victory. Nearby is the Church and Convent of St Monica , which houses the nuns of the Mater Dei Institute.

Take the bus back to Panaji for a lazy lunch at Hospedaria Venite . The charming eatery with its cute balconies overhanging the street is housed in a Portuguese-style building and serves fresh seafood, cooked in the local style. If you are craving meat, try their pepper steak or order a sizzler.

PM // Bid goodbye to Panaji over the scrumptious fish curry thali at the Ritz Classic. Loved by locals and tourists alike, the thali at Ritz comes loaded with kismur , clam curry, fish ambotik , sol kadi, a vegetable dish, Goan prawn curry, and rawa -fried fish. And if that doesn’t fill your belly up, order a plate of fish recheado and prawns balchão on the side!

Sadly, we have misplaced all our photos from this day.

The palace of Yusuf Adil Shah of the Bijapur sultanate fell to Portuguese invaders in 1510. Today it is Goa’s oldest colonial-era building and houses the state secretariat. The 55 cannons and the surrounding saltwater moat are gone and the original design has been altered vastly by the Portuguese.

A blue tile frieze hand-painted by Jorge Colaco in 1935 leads you inside the central library and public rooms of what was previously the Instituto Vasco da Gama (est. 1871). The library has a rare collection of religious texts but if that doesn’t interest you, explore the art gallery upstairs that displays paintings by European and Goan artists.

The twin-towered church is designed in the Mannerist Neo-Roman style of architecture. Originally a chapel built in 1584, it was rebuilt in 1605 and in 1606 it was raised to the status of a parish church. The present structure was built in 1653. The feast of Our Lady of Ports is celebrated here.

At Dona Paula, visit the chapel (open on Sundays for Morning Mass).

The Dabolim Airport, Goa’s only international airport, connects it to the rest of the country. From the airport, you can either book a taxi or hop into a Kadamba Transport bus to Panaji for INR 100.

The Vasco da Gama railway station is the nearest long-distance railway terminus. From the station, you can either book a taxi or hop into a Kadamba Transport bus to Panaji. The bus stop is a little distance from the station.

Overnight sleeper buses connect Panaji to Hyderabad , Bangalore , Pune , Mumbai, and other cities in the neighbouring states.

This post made me so nostalgic. I stayed in Fontainhas on a trip to Goa a year ago and just never wanted to leave. It’s so pretty and so Goa – really a refreshing change from the crowded beaches up north. One can spend days walking around Fontainhas and the neighboring areas. Might interest you to check Chandor out next time around. More on it here: https://wanderfulweekendz.com/2017/06/04/chandor-off-the-beaten-track-in-goa/

Panaji being a part of South Goa, I haven’t explored much. My visit to Goa was entirely spent in North Goa, this post really admires me to visit Goa again, with south goa on priority. Good blog.

I’d call Panaji maybe Central Goa but yes, I highly recommend visiting the city. The architecture is worth marvelling at and the pace of life is generally slow. Plus some of the best eateries in the entire state!

Nice post, Goa is on our travel list for 2019!

Make sure you spend some time away from the beaches in the Goan hinterland.

It’s a well researched and detailed post!

Thanks! We spent a wonderful time in Panaji.

Happy to hear this 😊

Panaji looks so beautiful! I would definitely do the walking tour if I ever go 🙂

Thanks, Louise!

Amazing place! I can really see the fusion of cultures from the past.

I had a very short trip to Panaji & only went to the beach and mahalakhsmi temple. It’s good to know there are so many more places to explore there. I wish I knew this before. Thanks for the detailed post!

what a detailed itinerary in Panaji. looks like this place draw a lot of tourists.

I’d heard Goa was great for beaches but it looks like the city is also really nice. What a lovely way to spend a day exploring.

It’s a pity that nobody talks much about Panaji and the Goan hinterland but they are loaded with history, the architecture is amazing, and you can discover slow life in charming villages far from the din of tourists and parties.

I’ve never heard of Panaji before! I’m always learning about new places in India! Sounds like a very scenic day!

Panaji is glorious. In the old town, you can slip into sussegado which Footprints defines as “a relaxed attitude and enjoyment of life to the fullest.” In Panaji, you can spend hours over lunch, then slip into the cool darkness of your room for a nap, and wake up to take a walk by the Mandovi.

I start all of my trips to new places with walking tours as well! They help me get acclimitised to where I am and what I want to see more of because I’m so geographically challenged!

Walking tours are really the best way to explore a new city esp. if its a city as walkable as Panaji and choc-a-bloc with antiquities.

I love these absolute gems you find, Mohana! I was recently in Macau (China) and I learned that Macau and Goa were ‘sister regions’ under the Portuguese Empire…. I must admit I had no idea India was even a Portuguese colony! I guess that’s how you learn—through travel and experiencing things for yourself. The sign for St Sebastian Road is very familiar! I saw lots of tiles like that in Macau as well.

I had no idea that Goa and Macau were ‘sister regions’ under the Portuguese. Now I have to travel to Macau 🙂 Those tiles are called Azulejos and they are my most favourite thing about Goa. Thanks for stopping by, Emily!

I’ve been hearing more and more about Goa recently. I definitely want to visit it when I go to India. Thanks so much for sharing about Panaji. It’s my first time learning about it and it seems charming 🙂

Please do! There is something for everything in this teeny-tiny state. If you a party animal, go up to the beaches of North Goa. If you prefer to stay off the tourist trail, find a homestay in one of the many small villages inland and enjoy a restless stay.

A great list of sights to see and fascinating fact about why the buildings are painted the way they are!

From what I know, under the Portuguese rule, there were strict codes for residential buildings. They might have been trying to replicate Portuguese towns. Only churches could be painted white.

Panaji looks fantastic. I love reading about less discovered spots. One to add to our India itinerary for sure!

Beautiful pictures! I would love to do a walking tour of the area. It looks so antique and charming.

It is! Panaji is one of the most charming cities we have visited in India. The architecture is worth marvelling at.

This sounds like an amazing hike ! I would love to do one in Asia! Thanks for sharing your amazing experience ! Valerie

Thanks for stopping by, Valerie!

Your writing style makes me feel like I am reading a novel. I can imagine myself in the setting!

Thank you, Lindsay! I am glad to be able to welcome you into this charming city through my words.

I haven’t travelled to India yet so I don’t know too much about where to visit, but this area looks beautiful and definitely worth adding to an itinerary!

I was only in Panaji for one day but I hit a few of your bucket list recommendations (including lunch at Kokni Canteen – though as a vegetarian I had to have the veg thali!).

I’ve been to India three times but have yet to go to Goa because I mistakenly thought it was only a beach/party destination (I’m not much into any of those anymore). Didn’t realize it has such a rich history or that it has a strong Portuguese influence. Would try to make it there next time.

What happens during a solar eclipse? Experts explain the awe-inspiring phenomena to expect on April 8

By David Pogue

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 9:03 AM EDT / CBS News

Monday's total eclipse of the sun won't be just any old eclipse; it's being referred to as the Great American Eclipse, because it's going through some very populated areas of the United States. Solar eclipses actually occur every 18 months or so, but during most of them the spectacle is "wasted" on empty ocean. But this afternoon , the moon's shadow will leave 32 million Americans in 15 states briefly in the dark.

  • Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times

Where is the best place to view the eclipse?

map-of-totality-nasa-getty.jpg

What exactly is a total eclipse?

Astronomy author and educator Ed Ting says that in a solar eclipse, the moon passes exactly between your eyes and the sun, and casts its shadow on the Earth. That shadow is only about 100 miles wide, so you have to be in a specific place to witness the solar eclipse in totality.

It's all the result of a freakish cosmic coincidence, when the moon and sun appear to be the exact same size in the sky. "The sun is 400 times bigger than the moon," said Ting. "But by happy coincidence, it is also 400 times further away. So, from our perspective they are the same size."

Total Solar Eclipse, 2017, Grand Tetons National Park , Teton County, Wyoming

What can happen during a total solar eclipse?

But the thrill of an eclipse isn't just about what's overhead – it's what happens all around you as the sky darkens. "The wind sometimes starts to pick up," said Ting. "Animals get confused. The streetlights come on."

But it's not exactly like nighttime. "The sky takes on this sort of fish-scaly, shimmery quality, and you will freak out," Ting said. "You can understand why the ancients ascribe such spiritual or religious significance to eclipses, because you will feel very strange. Half of the people who see an eclipse for the first time will cry."

What preparations are being made?

If you live in the path of the eclipse, you may notice one more effect: A lot more traffic.

Cari White is the chairman of the Eclipse Oversight Committee for Jonesboro, Arkansas, where the moment of totality – complete blockage of the sun – will last 2 minutes and 17 seconds. And for that experience of totally, White said the town will briefly grow to twice its size: "One-hundred-sixty-thousand people might be in town for the eclipse, and we're very excited about it," she said. "Our police department, our fire department, city water and light, they've all been working for over a year to design a plan."

And Jonesboro is not alone: "Everywhere, all over the country, [people] are doing exactly what I've been doing. It's a big, big deal."

  • How Americans in the solar eclipse's path of totality plan to celebrate the celestial event on April 8
  • Here's how one airline is planning to provide a total eclipse experience — from 30,000 feet in the air ("CBS Mornings")
  • Hotel prices soar as tourists flock to see solar eclipse

How to safely view the eclipse

Looking directly at the sun can permanently damage your vision, which is why you need eye protection. Cari White's committee in Jonesboro ordered 75,000 pairs of special glasses. "We have been working for weeks to pass them out to all the schools, we've passed them out at all of the major businesses, the library, the city hall," she said. "If you don't have a pair of glasses and you live in Jonesboro, I don't know how to help ya'."

But here's something about the glasses you might not know: According to Ting, "Once totality hits, you can take the glasses off. Because there's not much light coming from the sun. Once the sun starts to come out again, you do need to remember to put your glasses back on!"

Cameras need protective filters, too. But Ting offers a classic piece of advice for would-be photographers: "See your first eclipse, photograph your second. I have seen this personally where there is an eclipse, and the person is not looking up; they're fiddling with their camera. And then, before you know it, the eclipse is gone, you never saw it – and you didn't get the picture."

What about the weather?

Of course, all the precautions in the world won't help you if the conditions aren't right. Asked what she'll do if the weather is bad on Monday, White said, "I guess I'll cry. Don't talk to me about the bad stuff."

Fortunately, it's mostly good stuff.

"When you consider that this truly is the Great American Eclipse, because it goes through the center of the United States, it just puts you in awe," White said. "I just know that it's gonna be wonderful. And I'm gonna take it all in, every second of my two minutes, I'm gonna take it in and enjoy."

‘My misery, your paradise’: Canary Island residents say mass tourism is at breaking point

Locals are being forced to sleep in their cars and even caves.

Activists say locals are being forced to sleep in their cars and even caves.

Residents in the Canary Islands are planning protests and strikes in a backlash against overtourism.

Campaigners say the unsustainable influx of visitors is ruining life in the holiday hotspot.

One activist group on the island of Tenerife has planned a hunger strike over the construction of two new hotels.

Others report locals sleeping in cars and caves due to soaring house prices.

In 2023, the archipelago attracted 14.1 million foreign visitors, a record for the island group.

Canary Island residents plan hunger strike over hotel development

Demonstrators in Tenerife have organised a hunger strike next week over two new hotel developments.

Authorities had halted work on Hotel La Tejita and Cuna del Alma in Tenerife’s Puertito de Adeje over environmental breaches but construction has recently resumed.

Canarias Se Agota (Canaries Sold Out) also plans to hold demonstrations on 20 April in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Palma under the tagline ‘The Canaries have a limit’.

Canarias se exhausta (The Canary Islands are exhausted) is another key group behind the plans for the islands-wide protests .

“We in these islands have always been very welcoming to tourists. But we want more sustainable tourism,” Ruben Zerpa, of Canaries Sold Out, told UK newspaper i.

“Tenerife is a small island with limited resources. The roads are overwhelmed with traffic, there is a hydraulic emergency going on and hotels are full.”

Canary Island residents are living in their cars

Zerpa added that tourism has forced up rental prices making it unaffordable for many local residents.

“I earn about €900 and live with my partner but the rent is €800 per month. That is Santa Cruz, which is not even one of the most expensive parts of the island,” he said.

“Airbnb and Booking.com are like a cancer that is consuming the island bit by bit.”

Ivan Cerdena Molina, who is helping organise the protests, told local news outlet The Olive Press that locals are being forced to sleep in their cars and even caves as housing gets snapped up by tourism operators.

“We have nothing against individual tourists but the industry is growing and growing and using up so many resources and the island cannot cope,” he said.

  • ‘Go f*cking home’: The European cities where locals are fighting back against overtourism

One local organisation said the islands are “collapsing socially and environmentally” under the pressure from mass tourism .

A report from Ecologists in Action warned that almost 34 per cent of the local population - nearly 800,000 people - are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

The floods of holidaymakers to the Canaries are also putting pressure on health services, waste management, water supplies and biodiversity.

Canaries residents erect signs to ward off tourists

Residents have put up fake ‘closed to overcrowding’ posters and stickers in an attempt to deter tourists in certain overcrowded places.

‘Do not enter’ signs appeared near popular beauty spots on the island of Lanzarote last month, with some areas chained off.

“It is time to boycott, with the tools at our disposal, the tourist activity that is expelling us from our own land,” activists wrote on social media.

Near other popular attractions, anti-tourism graffiti has appeared reading ‘My misery your paradise’ and ‘Tourist go home’.
