Watch: MR. BIG Kicks Off 2024 U.S. Tour In Houston

MR. BIG kicked off it U.S. tour last night (Friday, January 12) at Warehouse Live in Houston, Texas. Fan-filmed video of the concert can be seen below.

MR. BIG 's ongoing last worldwide tour is aptly titled "The BIG Finish" . Since the band's original drummer and co-founder Pat Torpey lost his battle with Parkinson's disease in 2018, the band now feels it's time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy. The first leg kicked off in Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August 2023, where the band performed for hundreds of thousands of loyal fans at 11 sold-out shows including Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Now MR. BIG is bringing "The BIG Finish" to the U.S. Joining MR. BIG on drums for this special final world tour is longtime friend of the band Nick D'Virgilio ( SPOCK'S BEARD , BIG BIG TRAIN ),stepping in for Torpey .

MR. BIG 's final tour sees the band performing the entirety of its breakthrough platinum-selling 1991 album "Lean Into It" from start to finish as a featured highlight of the live setlist.

MR. BIG recently entered the studio to record a new studio album to coincide with the last shows of the band's farewell tour.

Last November, MR. BIG singer Eric Martin was asked by Troy Patrick Farrell of the weekly live "This That And The Other" radio show why he and his bandmates feel that now is the time to officially pull the plug on MR. BIG . He said: "Well, I really didn't wanna end it. I think we're gonna be done with it. I would just keep the door open forever. I didn't wanna ever end something. I hate the end of anything, but Pat Torpey is not there anymore. And that's kind of taking the wind out of the sails. He was the anchor of the band. And Nick D'Virgilio is a great replacement. He's phenomenal drummer. He sings just like Pat . Nick 's great. But everybody has so many other projects. I don't. I really like the MR. BIG project… I have a couple of irons in the fire. But, yeah, it's over. To me, it's kind of a bummer. But it's time. It's been 35 fucking years, man."

Martin went on to say that it "feels great" to have a drummer in MR. BIG who can not only reproduce Torpey 's parts on the band's classic songs but who also has the voice to harmonize with him during MR. BIG 's live shows.

"No offense to Matt [ Starr ]," Eric said, referencing the drummer who played with MR. BIG for four years prior to Torpey 's passing. "I thought Matt Starr was great. He was fine. The thing about Matt is that he came when Pat just couldn't do it anymore. He had this little cocktail kit on the side and he would play drums with us once in a while. Matt did it. It was just too soon for me. I wasn't ready to give up Pat Torpey . And when Matt did it, Matt has his own style. He's more like a John Bonham . He's not a Pat Torpey , and I was looking for somebody to play exactly like Pat , because I could. I wanted it, and I was really bummed that Pat couldn't do it anymore. And Matt did it, and he did a fine job for us. We sounded like a different MR. BIG . Pat Torpey has this finessey kind of things, and he's like Steve Gadd meets Vinnie Colaiuta meets maybe like a John Bonham . But Matt has got that form, heavy rock [approach], but there's a lot of finesse in the MR. BIG style — you know, 'Colorado Bulldog' and all that. And Matt did a great job; he really did. But then, after Matt , we didn't do anything. COVID thing, Pat passed away first, actually. And then nothing happened. And then when we were gonna get another drummer, we wanted to do a different style — not a different style, but we wanted to find somebody new that could play exactly like Pat . And that's what we found in Nick . He's got the same chops and the incredible voice. Matt can sing too. I mean, he was great. But I'm just letting the folks know out there, there's no bad blood between Matt Starr and MR. BIG or me or anything like that. He's killer."

Regarding the possibility of MR. BIG making a new album as the follow-up to 2017's "Defying Gravity" , Eric said: "We're doing it now. We're working on it now. [ MR. BIG guitarist] Paul Gilbert and I — I've been going back and forth to Portland, Oregon, where Paul lives, and we've been writing and recording everything. And so far, I wanna say, [we have] 10, 13 songs so far. And Billy 's [ Sheehan , MR. BIG bassist] got one that he just brought in. And Nick — we said, 'Hey, Nick , if you've got any tunes, man, throw it our way.' And he's got four songs that are pretty good."

In an April 2023 interview with Border City Rock Talk , D'Virgilio spoke about how he landed the gig as MR. BIG 's new touring drummer, five years after the passing of the band's co-founder, Pat Torpey . The 55-year-old Nick , who has spent the last nine years working for the Indiana-based online retailer of music instruments and audio gear Sweetwater , said: "It stemmed through Sweetwater . I've known Paul [ Gilbert ]; Paul was the one guy I knew most. I met Pat , and I met Billy — Gosh — at a music trade show back in the day. And I was definitely a fan of the band. I listened to a lot of Pat 's drumming way before I ever met him in person. But at Sweetwater , we do a lot of recording workshops and we get artists in to come and people pay to come to the studio and hang in the studio with the artists that come in. Paul does it quite a bit; he's been there a bunch. Billy was there a while back as well, but Paul 's been there a number of times. And I've been able to play as his rhythm section for these recording workshops. And I also had Paul play on a song on my solo record called 'Invisible' that I put out in 2020. Through all of this stuff, we got to just jamming some more stuff. And I know Paul through Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse and a lot of circles of musicians. After the last thing we did at Sweetwater , Paul just sent me an e-mail and asked if I would be interested in going on tour with MR. BIG in Asia. Now, this was [in] July [2022], when he first sent me the e-mail, so nine, 10 months ago or so. And I immediately said 'yes'. I think I said 'fuck yes', all in bold letters… So then I went sort of hog wild here in my studio and I videotaped and multi-tracked my drums. I kind of just went hog wild, sending back these demos of me playing and then singing all the parts. So I sang the lead vocal, and then I sang Pat 's parts too. Since [it was an] audition, I figured I'd put my best foot forward. Long story short, they said, 'Yeah, we'd love to do it. And you're in,' basically. So that's kind of how it all happened. It came out of the blue."

As a session musician and touring artist, Nick has worked with many different kinds of artists and bands, from TEARS FOR FEARS , Sheryl Crow and Kevin Gilbert to Peter Gabriel and Eric Burdon and the ANIMALS . In 1996, Nick took Phil Collins 's place in GENESIS and played on their "Calling All Stations" album. He has also carved out a major presence in the progressive rock world with his bands, SPOCK'S BEARD and BIG BIG TRAIN .

Before joining the Sweetwater team, Nick spent almost five years touring with Cirque Du Soleil 's "Totem" as drummer, vocalist, and assistant bandleader.

When D'Virgilio 's addition to MR. BIG was first announced in March 2023, Sheehan said in a statement: "We found a wonderful drummer in Nick , and he's got a great voice too. Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat 's, and he'll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse. It's a big relief because MR. BIG has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other. We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It's difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage."

Gilbert concurred, saying: " Nick gets close to the spirit of Pat Torpey . Billy , Eric [ Martin , vocals] and I have been really happy with the music we've already shared back and forth. I'm impressed with Nick 's level of musical adaptability and breadth of skill. He and I have done some recording together, and I was blown away with his groove, and how he just played what fit the song. If the song requires him to be more progressive and stand out, he will stand out. But if the song requires him to groove, he will groove. That's actually a rare thing, and it really fits in with what we do in MR. BIG ."

Martin added: "I love the fact that Nick was a fan of Pat Torpey and wants to keep our BIG sound intact. When I first saw his audition demo video of the 'Lean Into It' song 'Lucky This Time' , Nick was playing drums with those signature Pat snare hits and singing harmonies spot on to what Pat used to do. It gave me goosebumps!! I am so thrilled to have this man who will be filling some mighty BIG shoes join us on our last tour."

Exclusive: PAUL GILBERT Talks MR. BIG Farewell Tour - "I Realized The World Would Be A Happier Place, At Least For Us And Our Fans, If We Did It"

BraveWords recently caught up with guitarist Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X) to discuss his new instrumental tribute album to Ronnie James Dio, called The Dio Album, which is out now. Towards the end of the interview, Gilbert talked about the upcoming Mr. Big farewell tour, which is due to hit Japan this summer and hit other countries in 2024.

BraveWords: There's been a lot of "will they or won't they?" speculation about a Mr. Big reunion tour over the last few years. Did it take a lot of convincing to get everyone on board?

Gilbert: "I might have gone back and forth on it once, and then I realized the world would be a happier place, at least for us and our fans, if we did it," says Gilbert. "I started to feel good about it, and I started to get excited about it. It's wonderful to be excited about things. I was excited about making the Dio record, now I'm excited about this tour."

"Billy (Sheehan) is famous for doing his incredible bass solos, and I've kind of dreaded doing my own solo (at the upcoming shows). I would do one in the '80s and '90s, but I've gotten away from that, which I think has a lot to do with teaching. When I'm teaching I often discover what the student needs to work on is not unaccompanied guitar solos. They need to be able to count to four and cue the drummer in (laughs). I need to bring my unaccompanied '80s  solo fire into the game. I'm working that stuff out now, and I have to like it because I don't want to be (Spinal Tap's) Nigel Tufnel making fun of the genre (laughs)."

BraveWords: Speaking of incredible solos, going back to doing something like the ones in "Addicted To That Rush", is that muscle memory for you? Or do you have to go back and really rehearse it?

Gilbert: "I would say the solo in 'Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy', I worry about that one a little bit, but I try it and it works, so... (laughs). I want to ptarctice it enough that I'm not worried about it."

BraveWords: This is going to be your last tour; any chance there will be a new Mr. Big studio album as a going away present for the fans?

Gilbert: "We've got a big block of time between this summer tour and 2024, so I think... we haven't booked anything, but it's possible. We're sort of floating that around, so we'll see."

Watch for the complete interview with Gilbert about The Dio album, coming soon.

Mr. Big is putting on their signature top hats and old shoes one last time for a worldwide tour, aptly titled The BIG Finish. Since the band’s original drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, the band now feels it’s time to mark the end of this chapter of their legacy.

The first leg will take the band to Japan and Southeast Asia in July and August, while shows in South America, Europe, and the US will launch in early 2024 and will be announced soon.

“We wanted to do a proper farewell, and this seems like the right way to do it,” asserts bassist/vocalist Billy Sheehan. Notes guitarist/vocalist Paul Gilbert, “We’re in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music. And since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we’re going to play in as many of those places as we can.” Submits lead vocalist Eric Martin, “If we were in the movie business, we’d just put it all up in lights and say, ‘Welcome to The BIG Finish!’ Seriously, I’m glad we’re getting a chance to do it all onstage together as Mr. Big again and raise a flag to everything we’ve done as a band over the years.”

After 35 years of being addicted to that perpetually electrifying performance rush, the band feels it’s finally time to collectively hang up their top hats and shoes after coming together for one final, extended curtain call — a curtain call that will take them on an all-out world tour commencing in 2023 that will go for as long as, well, as long as Mr. Big fans demand it.

Joining Mr. Big on drums for this special final world tour will be longtime friend of the band Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train), stepping in for founding drummer/vocalist Pat Torpey, who sadly passed away in 2018 following his heroic battle with Parkinson’s disease. “We found a wonderful drummer in Nick, and he’s got a great voice too,” confirms Sheehan. “Nick has a vocal range similar to Pat’s, and he’ll be able to do the parts Pat did with a similar finesse. It’s a big relief because Mr. Big has always been heavy on the harmonies. When the band began, we really relied on each other. We knew each guy would do exactly what he needed to do vocally and to do it righteously, on key, and in time. It’s difficult to find a drummer who sings in that range, but Nick has the voice we really need onstage.”

Concurs Gilbert, “Nick gets close to the spirit of Pat Torpey. Billy, Eric, and I have been really happy with the music we’ve already shared back and forth. I’m impressed with Nick’s level of musical adaptability and breadth of skill. He and I have done some recording together, and I was blown away with his groove, and how he just played what fit the song. If the song requires him to be more progressive and stand out, he will stand out. But if the song requires him to groove, he will groove. That’s actually a rare thing, and it really fits in with what we do in Mr. Big.” “I love the fact that Nick was a fan of Pat Torpey and wants to keep our BIG sound intact,” says Eric. “When I first saw his audition demo video of the Lean Into It song ‘Lucky This Time,’ Nick was playing drums with those signature Pat snare hits and singing harmonies spot on to what Pat used to do. It gave me goosebumps!! I am so thrilled to have this man who will be filling some mighty BIG shoes join us on our last tour.”

One particular aspect of this upcoming final run that Mr. Big are excited about to a man is the decision to perform the entirety of their breakthrough Platinum-selling 1991 album Lean Into It from start to finish as a featured highlight of the live setlist. (To be sure, the full setlist will encompass Mr. Big’s entire career.) Fact is, Lean Into It is the perfect litmus testament to the band’s inherent dexterity at blending a variety of styles together, whether it’s the heady rocking brew of “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind,” the power-drilled and power-chorded identity checklist “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy,” or the truly heartfelt sentiments found within “To Be With You,” Mr. Big’s chart-topping, worldwide #1 smash hit single.

For his part, Martin the songwriter remains eternally grateful for the never-ending success of “To Be With You,” but the essence of Mr. Big goes much, much deeper than that. “That song helped put the stamps in our passports,” Martin allows, “but we really nailed it on Lean Into It. I’m still in awe of how Billy and Paul play on that album, because they’re such brilliant players. I used to call them the dynamic duo. And Pat Torpey was an underrated drummer, in my opinion. I mean, just listen to his tone! Lean Into It is totally indicative of who we are as a band.”

Explains Sheehan, “Lean Into It was put together much like a movie, with an opening scene that lets us get into the dialogue and find out what the story is. And then you get the love scene, the car chase, and the punchline ending. I think it’s a perfectly sequenced album.” Observes Gilbert, “Some people thought we had brought in professional background singers to do all those harmonies on Lean Into It, but no, it’s really us. We always felt like we had something to prove whenever we went on the road and did all that singing ourselves, just to show everyone that we really could do it.”

Just like the consummate performers they are, Mr. Big still want to reach into your dreams. “I hope the people who come see our shows get to feel what it’s like when musicians get together and really play and sing the songs they wrote,” offers Sheehan. “We want the audience to be one with us, and feel our evening together was a magical and beautiful event.” Theorizes Gilbert, “Music is like time travel. You can hear something that takes you right back to 1992, and it reminds you exactly of what was happening back then. On this tour, I want to give people the opportunity to time travel like that and go, ‘These guys are on fire!’ Good music is timeless.”

Concludes Martin, “I love playing with these guys. And if I’m being honest, I don’t want it to ever end. I’m the guy who just knows we still have that special spark together, and I always want to keep the torch burning. But if it really is the end, then I want us all to have a happy ending together. We’re a great live band. I want everybody to come out and see us, because we want to blow you away and have you all think as you’re leaving, ‘Mr. Big really is the real thing.’”

Indeed, when it comes to harnessing the real thing that best represents the unyielding power of rock & roll, Mr. Big have truly got what it takes. Make sure to catch them before they bring down that final curtain, because when it’s through, it’s through. Mr. Big really do want to be with you at least one more time, and they’d be more than honored to see you, one and all, somewhere around the world.

Paul Gilbert interview: I’m happy that anybody’s paying attention

Shred King Paul Gilbert on big hair, learning from Joe Satriani, and his inner melodic generator

Paul Gilbert

At the age of 19, Paul Gilbert was the youngest ever tutor at the renowned Guitar Institute Of Technology in Hollywood. His virtuoso metal band Racer X was one of the star turns on Mike Varney’s shred label Shrapnel , and Gilbert hit pay dirt in 1988 when he co-founded the hugely successful Mr. Big .

In May he released his latest instrumental solo, Behold Electric Guitar .

paul gilbert tour 2024

There are some fun titles on the new album: Sir, You Need To Calm Down, I Love My Lawnmower . What comes first, the title or the tune?

I actually wrote a vocal melody and lyrics for most of these tunes. The opening track, Havin’ It , was: ‘ Havin’ it don’t make me stop wantin’ it/The back of it just makes me want to see the front of it .’ If I want to play [guitar] like a singer, I need something to sing. It gives you a musical and emotional structure.

You’ve toned down the shred in favour of very lyrical playing. Was that a conscious decision?

When I was a kid you’d still hear muzak, elevator music, so for decades I thought if an instrument plays a vocal line it’s going to wreck it. But then I did the G3 tour with Joe Satriani [in 2007]. He’s fantastic at playing melodies on guitar, and I realised it can sound good if done with care. One of the most satisfying things a musician can do is make that connection between your hands and what you’re hearing with your inner melodic generator. This album’s been my most successful in those terms.

You’ve always had an off-the-wall sense of humour. Has that helped or hindered your career?

I’m doing the best I can with what I have. If I woke up one morning and looked as amazing as David Coverdale I’d go for it. In Racer X I had big hair and wore eyeliner a bit, but other people had bigger hair and looked cooler. You get a sense of what’s working for you and what’s honest and authentic.

Teaching is in the toolbox, from GIT to your online guitar school. Where does that impulse come from?

I had some lessons, but I taught myself a lot, and people just always came to me to learn. My fantasy was we’d get off the tour bus and there’d be all these beautiful girls waiting for us. The reality was it’d be a bunch of guys who wanted guitar lessons. But it’s great. Teaching keeps me immersed in music, it’s inspiring and I’m never bored.

Will Mr. Big be back?

You never know. We did a lot of touring these last couple of years and I got burned out on playing the same great set every night. I’ve got my own tour this year, and I’m always trying to do something new. It’s terrifying but interesting.

There’s a pleasing paradox in that your biggest hit, Mr. Big’s To Be With You , features your simplest solo.

I like that solo! Everybody who hears what I do is an individual. People hearing that in the pub, that’s probably the only time they’re going to hear me play anything. Those who come a masterclass will know my deep cuts and will be angry if I don’t play Scarified by Racer X. I’m just fortunate and happy that anybody’s paying attention.

Behold Electric Guitar is out now via Mascot/Music Theories Recordings. Paul Gilbert will tour The UK in September .

Mr. Big announce farewell world tour

At each show, the band will perform their 1991 album, Lean into It – including the album's sing-along, chart-topping smash hit single, To Be With You – in its entirety

Billy Sheehan (left) and Paul Gilbert perform onstage with Mr. Big at KOKO on October 17, 2014 in London

Way back in 2018, Eric Martin – lead singer of Mr. Big – announced that the band would likely record one more album and subsequently call it quits .

The band's drummer and co-founder, Pat Torpey, had passed away from Parkinson's disease earlier that year, and Martin felt “uncomfortable” continuing the band for an extended period following Torpey's passing.

A few years have come and gone since, and we've yet to see that new album, but today, Mr. Big – Martin on vocals, virtuosos Paul Gilbert on electric guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass guitar , and new addition Nick D’Virgilio on drums, in place of Torpey – announced “The Big Finish,” a trek that will serve as the band's final worldwide tour.

At each show, the band will perform their 1991 album, Lean into It – including the album's sing-along, chart-topping smash hit single, To Be With You – in its entirety, along with a host of other favorites from their discography.

“We’re in the process of making sure we come up with a suitably big entertainment extravaganza to go along with our music," Gilbert said in a press release, "and since our music has resonated so wonderfully in places all over the world, we’re going to play in as many of those places as we can.”

“I hope the people who come see our shows get to feel what it’s like when musicians get together and really play and sing the songs they wrote,” added Sheehan. “We want the audience to be one with us, and feel our evening together was a magical and beautiful event.”

Thus far, the band have only announced a run of summer shows in Asia, but more dates on other continents are promised for 2024. You can see a list of those Asian dates below.

"I’d seen the success of the  Eat ’Em And Smile  band [with singer David Lee Roth] and I wanted to see that level of success with a band I’d put together,” Sheehan told Guitar World last year when reflecting on Lean Into It and its impact on the band . “It changed so many things in my life and for the first time, this was my success – I put the band together. It’s me, Pat, Eric and Paul’s success – we made it happen. It was not only a life-changer, but a life-completer."

Though open to music of all kinds, his greatest love has always been indie, and everything that falls under its massive umbrella. To that end, you can find him on Twitter crowing about whatever great new guitar band you need to drop everything to hear right now.

Although his shredding isn't as perfect as it once was, the amount of groove and feeling he gained over the years clearly makes Paul a better musician and showman than he ever was!!

Although I never got quite into his previous album 'Stone Uphill Puhsing Man' I thoroughly enjoy(d) 'I can destroy'.

With this in mind I immediately bought tickets when they became available. Expecting nothing less than an amazing show from my favorite though aging virtuoso, I was blown away by his highly improbable finesse, accuracy, speed but most importantly groove and feeling.

Opening with an instrumental medley constisting of about 30 songs, spanning over 30 years of songwriting and lasting over 40 minutes couldn't have been more awesome. A good selection of melodic, fast and slow, shred and emotional songs. Confirming precicely how I know and remember Paul.

He put a smile on my face the moment he entered the stage and that smile didn't go away a single moment until all the way back home. A very rare skill.

If you haven't seen him... do it! Just... do it!

Great show. A little too loud for my taste but nothing significative. The venue was terrible, but the show made it worth it.

It opened with a mix of hit PG songs untill he switched guitars and started the I can destroy album. Thomas lang was also great, very varied and professional. Peter was not that great. The sound was bad, so probably it didnt do justice to him.

The sound was really saturated, the kick drum low frequencies covered the bass guitar, making it hard to appreciate since lang used a lot of double kick drum rhythms. The electric guitar was not tolerable when paul played the first two strings open, and sometimes around the fifth fret.

I blame it all on the venue really, paul was great and very open to the public, talking to us even though most people probably didn't understans what he was saying.

It was a great show.

Paul Gilbert is both a top shredder and a great showman... a rare combination indeed. The rest of the band (Thomas Lang on drums and Pete Griffin on bass) was great too.

This is a must see show! He is "known as a metal guitarist" and that is only about 5% of what he does! Entertaining in every way! Must See every time he comes to town!

Masters Memories Still Special To Local Legend Gibby Gilbert

  • Tuesday, April 9, 2024

Gibby Gilbert walks off the 18th green in the 1980 Masters where he finished second

It has been 53 years since the first time Gibby Gilbert drove down Magnolia Lane entering the Augusta National Golf Club. Even today, those poignant memories remain vivid, refusing to fade into the collage of notable accomplishments from a professional career that spanned four decades.

There was always something special about the Masters Tournament for Gilbert. As the 88 th rendition of the annual rite of passage that seems to usher television viewers and patrons into the glorious hope of spring unfolds later this week, Gilbert still cherishes the five opportunities he had to compete in the golf season’s first major.

“For as long as I can remember, the Masters is the tournament,” Gilbert said. “It’s the one that everyone wants to win because of the prestige of knowing you’ll always be remembered as a Masters champion. Back when I played, you did whatever you had to do to get into the Masters.”

Gilbert learned the game of golf while growing up in Chattanooga, then played two years at the University of Chattanooga (now UTC) before moving to Florida to embark on his professional journey in 1961.

He finally captured his first win in 1970, winning the Houston Champions International in a playoff to seal his invitation to the next year’s Masters. Oddly enough, former Baylor School and UTC golfer Stephan Jaeger also earned his first PGA Tour win in Houston last week to garner his first Masters invite.

“I remember driving down the driveway the first time I went to Augusta National and I got butterflies in my stomach entering the gates,” Gilbert said. “It was even a bigger thrill to play my first practice round with Billy Casper. He coached me where to hit it on certain holes, which holes to run it up to the green and which ones to fly it to the hole. It was a special time for me.”

Gilbert made the cut in his first Masters, navigating his opening round at even par 72 before finishing 45 th in 1971.

He again advanced to the weekend at the Masters the next year to finish tied for 38 th in 1972, but it would be five years before Gilbert returned to Augusta. He punched his return ticket with his second career win in claiming the 1976 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, then missed the cut the following year the only time in his five Masters.

But the 1980 Masters proved to be the most memorable for Gilbert. After recording birdies on all four of the par 5s in his opening round to shoot 2-under 70, he was off to a good start.

“When you tee it up at Augusta you first want to make the cut,” Gilbert said. “I shot 70-74 the first two days and I was back in the middle of the pack.”

But something magical happened over the final two rounds. Gilbert opened Saturday’s play with birdies on three of his first four holes, his 68 tied for the low round of the day with a 23-year-old Spaniard, Seve Ballesteros, along with Ben Crenshaw and Andy Bean.

Ballesteros carried a seven-shot lead into Sunday that grew to a ten early in the round, leaving no mystery as to who would don the green jacket. But Gilbert continued his steady play with a front-nine 34, before birdies on holes 13-16 pushed him to 10-under and in second place.

Only a bogey on the final hole cost Gilbert sole possession of second, finishing at 9-under with Jackie Newton, four back of Ballesteros who won the first of his two Masters championships.

“I shot 68 and had low round Saturday and then on Sunday shot 67 and had low round, so I had both low rounds on the weekend,” Gilbert said. “I was never really in the hunt to win the golf tournament. Once I started making a few birdies, I knew I couldn’t catch Seve because he was way too far ahead, but I could finish second. That was my target on the back nine.”

The weekend earned Gilbert a nice payday of $30,500, which pales in comparison to the $1,584,000 awarded to Brooks Koepka for his second-place finish behind Jon Rahm last year.

“Those guys are playing for so much more money out there today,” Gilbert said. “But I was proud of finishing second and being able to pick up a nice check. If I didn’t play golf, I’ve got no clue what I would have done. I didn’t have a Plan B.”

Gilbert made one more trip to the Masters in 1981, once again making the cut before finishing tied for 28 th .

He’s never returned to Augusta National since his last round there, but watches the tournament ever year reminiscing about his five Masters appearances.

“I'll watch every minute and enjoy seeing some of the guys hit it where I hit it,” Gilbert said. “I can remember how the greens rolled and the contours. It's just fun to almost replay your rounds on TV again.”

Even with the lengthening of the golf course over the years to accommodate the advances in modern equipment, Augusta National remains special to Gilbert.

“The thing I liked about the golf course was it was fair,” Gilbert said. “The greens were tough because you’d have two or three tiers. You have to hit the ball on the right tier to have a decent putt. Otherwise, you're looking a three-putt in the eye.”

Gilbert added one more victory to his PGA Tour resume’ with the 1977 Walt Disney World National Team Championship, then added six more wins during his successful years playing on the Champions Tour. He competed in 13 PGA Championships with a pair of top six finishes, and played in five U.S. Opens.

His lone career regret was the fact he never made it to the United Kingdom to play in the Open Championship.

“I was exempt a couple of times, but I didn’t go simply because they weren't playing for enough money,” Gilbert said. “We played in Milwaukee that was opposite the British Open, and Milwaukee paid twice the money with half the expenses. I love the trophies, but I was out there to make a living and had to go to Milwaukee.”

Gilbert did eventually make it Scotland a few years ago with his sister to play the historic courses in the Open rotation. The trip left him more convinced that he should have made at least one trip across the pond during his competitive heyday.

“I lived in Florida for 15 years where I learned to play the wind,” Gilbert said. “I could hit the ball as low as anyone, and my game would have played well at the British Open. I'm not saying I could have won but I could have had a decent tournament. That's the only regret I have in golf is I should have played that one time.”

Gilbert, 83, who has been inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame and the UTC Athletic Hall of Fame, now spends his time at The Ooltewah Club shooting below his age and mentoring his granddaughter, Gibbie Kay Cain.

“She's going to be good,” Gilbert said. “She's 15 now and she outdrives me and most of the times she beats me. She reminds me so much of me when I was her age. I started playing when I was 13 years old and I had to play golf every day because it was my life. She's exactly the same way.”

Paul Weller rocks out on guitar.

On May 25, 2024, Paul Weller turns 66.

To celebrate, the former frontman for The Jam and The Style Council is releasing the appropriately-titled album “66” and hitting the road in support of the new record.

The tour, his first in North America since 2017, kicks off with concerts at Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theater on Friday, Sept. 6 and Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 7.

And while we can’t confirm whether Weller’s collaborators for his upcoming record — including Noel Gallagher , Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, and Madness ‘ Suggs McPherson — will perform with him on tour, we do know the best way to find out is live.

If you can’t wait for the upcoming 14-concert trek, tickets can be secured for all shows as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 12, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found here.

Paul Weller set list

As noted earlier, this is Weller’s first U.S. tour in seven years.

However, he performs overseas quite regularly. To wit, he played a gig in Leicester, GB, a day before this story was published.

Here’s what he took to the stage — including a few cuts from The Jam and The Style Council — at the De Monfort Hall on April 9, 2024, courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “That’s Entertainment” (The Jam song) 02.) “A Man of Great Promise” (The Style Council song) 03.) “Shout to the Top!” (The Style Council song) 04.) “Broken Stones” 05.) “Fat Pop” 06.) “You Do Something to Me” 07.) “Start!” (The Jam song) 08.) “Porcelain Gods” 09.) “Hung Up” 10.) “Peacock Suit” 11.) “The Changingman” 12.) “Wild Wood” 13.) “Mayfly” 14.) “Soul Wandering” 15.) “Jumble Queen” 16.) “All the Pictures on the Wall” 17.) “My Ever Changing Moods” (The Style Council song)

Paul Weller new music

Ahead of the “66” album release, Weller has released a pair of singles this year.

First up, he dropped the three-minute “Soul Wandering” on Feb. 23. The track is a jaunty, folksy tune with inventive instrumentation simmering beneath the surface. Around one minute in, a backup singer joins Weller and the song kicks into high gear.

He followed that up with somehow simultaneously plaintive and uplifting “Rise Up Singing.”

If you want to hear both bops, you can find them here .

Huge acts on tour in 2024

Many iconic artists that you may fancy if you’re a Weller fan are on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live.

•  Roger Daltrey

•  Elvis Costello and Daryl Hall

• BEAT featuring Adrian Belew and Steve Vai

• Ryan Adams

Nate diaz vs. jorge masvidal four-city 'baddest tour' kicks off friday in las vegas, share this article.

Fight fans are about to get a heavy dose of Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal together in the same room.

The UFC veterans announced Monday on their respective Instagram pages that they will take part in a four-city “Baddest Tour” ahead of their boxing match.

The first stop on the Diaz vs. Masvidal promotional tour is this Friday inside Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World in Las Vegas. After that, it continues April 16 at Palladium Times Square in New York, followed by April 17 at Pier 5 at Bayside in Miami, before concluding April 19 at The Novo Theater in Los Angeles. All four events are open to the public.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nate Diaz (@natediaz209)

Diaz and Masvidal are scheduled for 10-round boxing match June 1 at Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif. It’ll be a rematch of their inaugural BMF title fight that took place in November 2019 at UFC 244, which Masvidal won by third-round injury stoppage TKO due to a cut above Diaz’s eye.

Diaz, 38, is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Jake Paul in their boxing match last August. It was Diaz’s first competition since he left the UFC after his final promotion appearance, a win over Tony Ferguson, in September 2022 at UFC 279.

Masvidal, 39, hasn’t competed since losing to Gilbert Burns last April at UFC 287 , which capped off a four-fight losing streak. Masvidal announced afterward that he was retired from MMA.

Power of Law 2024

Variety has announced the return of the Variety Power of Law Breakfast Presented by City National Bank, taking place Thursday, April 18, in Los Angeles.

Speakers at the event include Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global Business Operations Dan Scharf, CEO, City National Entertainment Kelly Coffey, and Producer and Original Film Founder Neal H. Moritz.

Scharf will speak with Variety Co-Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Littleton in a keynote conversation about content deal-making for Amazon MGM Studios. He oversees business affairs, physical production, studio operations, casting, and music for the studio’s television and feature film groups. Since joining the company in 2013, Scharf has spearheaded negotiations for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Boys,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” among other series and films.

“We’re excited to partner with City National Bank once again for our annual Variety Power of Law Breakfast. Exploring the intersection of law and entertainment is vital to understanding the industry as a whole, and this event serves as a platform to delve deep into the complexities, challenges, and innovations shaping both areas,” said Variety Chief Operating and Marketing Officer Dea Lawrence.

Coffey will kick off the event with opening remarks.

“City National Bank recognizes and values the critical work done by the legal community to support the entertainment industry, and we have had the distinct pleasure of working with many Variety Legal Impact Report honorees,” said Coffey. “On behalf of all of my colleagues at City National, I would like to congratulate Power of Law Award recipient, Cliff Gilbert-Lurie, for his illustrious career and the incredible work he does for children both in Los Angeles and around the country.
