2023 Tour Championship leaderboard: Collin Morikawa tied on top breaking Tigers Woods' record at East Lake

Moriakwa's 125 through 36 holes is two strokes better than woods' previous record mark in atlanta.

Collin Morikawa is off to a record start at East Lake Golf Club, following his Thursday 61 with a Friday 64 to shoot 125 through the first two rounds of the 2023 Tour Championship. That mark bests the prior best set by Tiger Woods, who shot 127 through 36 holes in 2007.

Morikawa remains tied atop the Tour Championship leaderboard with Viktor Hovland, who was similarly on fire in Atlanta on Friday. Hovland, last week's BMW Championship winner, once again utilized a back-nine sizzler to pull ahead of the competition and into pole position alongside Morikawa at 16 under as the weekend begins at East Lake.

Rattling off four straight back-nine birdies and needing only 30 strokes across his final holes, Hovland remained on top with Morikawa with the duo now sitting two strokes ahead of Scottie Scheffler, who entered the Tour Championship two shots in front of Hovland in an advantage provided by the FedEx Cup standings.

With $18 million awaiting the eventual winner, there is still plenty of golf left to play entering Moving Day. Keegan Bradley (-13), Xander Schauffele (-12), Jon Rahm (-12) and Rory McIlroy (-10) all sit within six shots of the lead with 36 holes left to play.

If Hovland is to become the first player since Patrick Cantlay in 2021 -- fourth overall -- to pull off the BMW Championship-Tour Championship double, he will need to putt like he did Friday. Ranking 29th in strokes gained putting in Round 1 -- besting only Scheffler -- Hovland found his groove in Round 2 gaining nearly three strokes on the green and ranking first in the field. He has proven to have the complete game and a champion's mettle, but so have his American counterparts as the list of potential FedEx Cup winners has shortened.

Morikawa made his move Thursday, and while he matched Hovland with a 64 on Friday, Hovland finished hotter on the day with a back-nine 30. Carding a bogey-free 6-under 64 to sit at 16 under, Morikawa finds himself needing to match the hottest player in the world stroke for stroke if he is to make history and become the first FedEx Cup champion to start the week nine off the pace.

Meanwhile, Scheffler has been flawless since his triple bogey on the 15th hole in Round 1, playing his next 21 holes in bogey free fashion at 6 under. The FedEx Cup leader (at the tournament's start) and No. 1 golfer in the world is within striking distance of retaking the lead entering Saturday's third round.

The leaders

T1. Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa (-16): If it felt like déjà vu, that's because it was déjà vu. Hovland's back-nine 30 looked awfully similar to his back-nine 28 at Olympia Fields from last Sunday. He began the homeward half with a par before carding scores of 3-3-3-2-3 to speed past his counterparts. Not only did Hovland claim the lead at the halfway point, he effectively trimmed the potential names engraved on the FedEx Cup trophy. For much of the afternoon, the leaderboard was packed like sardines. Hovland has since cracked open the tin and made it so those at the top have plenty of room to swim.

The contenders

3. Scottie Scheffler (-14) 4. Keegan Bradley (-13) T5. Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm (-12) 7. Rory McIlroy (-10)

Outside the mess on the par-5 finisher, Scheffler's second round was what we expected from the world No. 1 this week. Getting around the par 70 without a blemish and adding five birdies along the way, Scheffler remains in the thick of it at the halfway point. Like Hovland, Scheffler was much better on the greens Friday gaining nearly two strokes with his gamer. If he putts like that, he should win the FedEx Cup and make up for last year's blunder. However, it's a big if.

Xander's love affair with East Lake

Stop, if you have heard this before: Schauffele is in contention at East Lake. The winner of the Tour Championship in 2017 -- the final year of the shadow leaderboard -- Schauffele now eyes his first FedEx Cup crown. In his 26 rounds at East Lake, Schauffele has shot under par 23 times (including a 64 Friday) and not once has carded an over-par round.

"It's just you got to sort of plot around the property well and if you can get your putter going, the greens are so pure you feel like you can start rolling anything in," said Schauffele. "So, it must just fit my eye. I'm not really sure. But, yeah, I mean, I played pretty well around the property and I'm going to need some more of that magic here on the weekend."

Rory's back still an issue

The three-time FedEx Cup champion looked somewhat looser Friday compared to Thursday, but McIlroy continues to struggle with his back. A 3-under 67 has him on the periphery of contention at 10 under, six adrift of the leaders. However, his eyes may already be on the Ryder Cup despite confirming he will be playing in the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour before the action in Rome.

"I would rather it pop up now than in three or four weeks' time," said McIlroy. "Yeah, again, I've managed it well and I think I did well to get through yesterday. I've got through another day. Hopefully it feels a bit better over the weekend"

Rick Gehman and Patrick McDonald recap the second round of the Tour Championship. Viktor Hovland keeps rolling, Scottie Scheffler bounces back and much more. It's storylines, scorecards and betting favorites. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

2023 Tour Championship updated odds and picks

  • Viktor Hovland: 17/10
  • Collin Morikawa: 23/10
  • Scottie Scheffler: 33/10
  • Jon Rahm: 10-1
  • Xander Schauffele: 14-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 22-1
  • Keegan Bradley: 25-1

These are the only seven players listed below 150-1. The top three on the board command the most respect, and rightfully so. I think you can cross off Bradley and McIlroy, due to his health, making this a five-man race for the crown. Let's take a shot on Schauffele at 14-1 to track down the three-headed monster.

Rory wraps up

It is a round of 3-under 67 for the three-time champ, and he will head into the weekend at 10 under. It is likely he finds himself a touchdown behind Hovland or whoever claims the 36-hole lead, but the main concern has to be his back and if he can stretch it even further.

Hovland makes his move

The Norwegian remains en fuego and now holds the lead at 15 under. The Americans trail by one and separation has officially been made as the next closest player is four strokes behind Hovland. It is likely Hovland, Scottie or Collin will be your FedEx Cup champ.

Leaderboard beginning to separate

Three young guns now have a two-stroke lead over the rest of the field with Collin Morikawa leading the way at 14 under. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler find themselves at 13 under before Jon Rahm and co. at 11 under. If the three at the top can finish strong, they could conceivably trim the number of potential winners to 5-6.

POY conversation heating up

They are running 2-3 behind Collin Morikawa, and they have been the best players all year. Scottie Scheffler stands at 12 under and one behind is Jon Rahm at 11 under after starting his back nine in style. The Spaniard missed a 5-foot chance to get to 12, but he now heads to the difficult 14th looking to hold serve before a potential fast finish.

Morikawa marches ahead

A birdie on the difficult par-4 8th has Collin Morikawa at 3 under for the day and 13 under for the tournament. He leads by one over Scottie Scheffler and could be on the move as he heads to the difficult ninth. This is the most separation we have seen today as congestion is the name of the game at East Lake.

Hovland cards first bogey of the week

It took him more than 20 holes, but Viktor Hovland has finally dropped a shot and returns to -11. He sits one behind Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler and is joined by Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley. If either of the latter two win, would they garner a U.S. pick for the Ryder Cup? I lean no despite what would be a great season.

Rory McIlroy claims his third FedExCup title

Viktor Hovland was the toast of the BMW Championship after his course-record 61 to pip Scottie Scheffler but it is the World No.1 who will tee off in the best position in the Tour Championship after the 30-man field was confirmed.

The season's lucrative Playoff finale for the $18m first prize will once again feature a staggered start beginning in the first round at East Lake in Atlanta where Scheffler starts top of the leaderboard at 10-under before a ball is even hit following the first two Playoffs events.

That's because the FedExCup points leader begins the championship at 10-under par and the No. 2 player, Hovland, will start at 8-under.

The No. 3 player, Rory McIlroy , starts at 7-under, the No. 4 player starts at 6-under and the No. 5 player starts at 5-under.

Players listed 6-10 start at 4-under, players 11-15 start at 3-under, golfers 16-20 start at 2-under, those 21-25 start at 1-under; and players 26-30 start at even par.

At the end of Sunday, the player with the lowest stroke total over 72 holes when combined with his FedExCup starting strokes will be crowned the FedExCup champion, be credited with an official victory at the Tour Championship, earn a bonus of $18m and a five-year PGA Tour exemption.

Scheffler is in the box seat going into Thursday's first round after a consistent season with two wins from 22 event plus two runner-up finishes, 16 top tens and 20 top 25 finishes as he has pocketed over $21m in prize money.

After the American, Hovland starts on eight-under after two wins, one runner-up place and eight top 10s from 22 events for just over $14.1m in prize money. Then next is McIlroy on seven-under with two wins , two runner-up finishes and 12 top 10s from 17 events for $13.9m as he defends his title.

Viktor Hofland lifts the BMW Championship

BMW Championship winner Viktor Hovland starts at 8-under, two back of Scheffler

Jon Rahm starts at six-under teeing off with McIlroy after four wins from 19 events for $16.5m in a season that has included one missed cut and one withdrawal.

In-form Lucas Glover , who won back to back recently, starts at five-under before Max Homa , Patrick Cantlay , Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark and Matt Fitzpatrick start at four-under.

For all the jockeying for position over 72 holes at Olympia Fields Country Club in the BMW, only Fitzpatrick - who has over $8.1m prize money this season - was able to play his way into the Tour Championship as the field was cut from 50 to the final 30.

Despite starting the final round as joint leader, Fitzpatrick, who shot 66, had no complaints with Hovland's win, he said. “Just really pleased again that I played really well final round in contention with world No. 1, and I didn't lose it. Someone else came from behind and won it.”

After Fitzpatrick and Co. tee off , then it is Tommy Fleetwood , Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele at three-under.

Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners and Si Woo Kim are two-under. Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa and Jason Day are one-under. While Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth and Sepp Straka start level par.

Tour Championship starting scores:

  • -10 Scottie Scheffler
  • -8 Viktor Hovland
  • -7 Rory McIlroy
  • -6 Jon Rahm
  • -5 Lucas Glover
  • -4 Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick
  • -3 Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele
  • -2 Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim
  • -1 Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day
  • E Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta – site of the PGA Tour’s 2023 Tour Championship and the finale in the FedEx Cup Playoffs – originally was designed by Tom Bendelow and opened in 1908. Donald Ross redesigned the layout in 1913, and Rees Jones worked on the course in 1994.

Architect Andrew Green will begin another renovation, with a goal of returning many of the Ross features to East Lake, soon after the last putt drops in the Tour Championship.

East Lake ranks No. 5 on Golfweek’s Best 2023 list of top private clubs in Georgia, and it’s No. 92 on the list of top classic courses built before 1960 in the U.S.

The course will play to 7,346 yards and a par of 70 for the Tour Championship. Nos. 1 and 14 normally play as par 5s for members, but they will be listed as par 4s for the Tour Championship with only Nos. 6 and 18 playing as par 5s.

2023 Tour Championship odds, picks, field, predictions: Golf expert fading Scottie Scheffler at East Lake

Sia nejad reveals his top tour championship 2023 picks, props and sleepers as the 2023 fedex cup playoffs conclude at east lake this week.

pga tour championship east lake 2023

The champion of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season will be crowned when the tour's top 30 players square off in the 2023 Tour Championship beginning Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will try to cap off a tremendous season by winning his first FedEx Cup title. Because of the tournament's unique staggered start, he begins the season-ending Tour Championship at 10-under par and with a two-shot lead over Viktor Hovland. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy looks to win a record fourth FedEx Cup title. He starts the tournament three shots behind Scheffler.

McIlroy is the +330 second choice in the latest 2023 Tour Championship odds. Scheffler is the +130 favorite, while Hovland (+450), Jon Rahm (+850) and Patrick Cantlay (+1800) round out the top five choices on the PGA odds board. Before locking in any 2023 Tour Championship picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been on fire on head-to-head matchups since the Charles Schwab Challenge, going 24-15-1 and returning 6.59 units over that span. That's a $659 profit for $100 bettors in the past 13 weeks.

Nejad also nailed 75-1 longshot Wyndham Clark as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners. Nejad also had a winning head-to-head record in seven of nine weeks. He was up more than 70 units over that three-month span.

Now, Nejad has focused his attention on the 2023 Tour Championship field and has locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2023 Tour Championship expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is completely fading Scottie Scheffler, even though he is the +130 favorite to win with starting strokes and starts with a two-shot lead. The 27-year-old Texan is on a remarkable run, having made the cut in 24 straight tournaments – a stretch that dates back to last year's BMW Championship. He also has finished in the top 12 in 20 of 22 tournaments this season.

Scheffler starts the Tour Championship with a two-shot lead over Hovland, but Nejad believes that may work against Scheffler. Nejad thinks that Scheffler being on top will apply even more pressure on his putter, which has been the only weak facet of his game all season. "I'm not comfortable with his short odds relative to those of the rest of the field," Nejad told SportsLine. See all his picks at SportsLine .

However, Nejad is high on the chances of Sam Burns, who is +4500 to win without starting strokes. The 27-year-old from Louisiana is making his third straight appearance in the Tour Championship. He finished 18th in 2021 and 24th last season.

Nejad likes that Burns seems to have bounced back from a minislump. After missing four cuts in eight starts, he has rebounded with two top-15 finishes in his last three events. "His game is trending in the right direction across a myriad of metrics, including greens in regulation and approach play, and we know he's the type of player who can get hot at any given moment," Nejad told SportsLine.  See whom else to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2023 Tour Championship picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2023 Tour Championship and is backing several longshots, including one who is priced higher than 50-1. This player "continues to play well" and is a longshot who could surprise. You can see Nejad's PGA Tour picks only at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2023 Tour Championship, and which player in the Tour Championship 2023 field could bring a huge payday at more than 50-1? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Sia Nejad's top picks for Tour Championship 2023 , all from the expert who was up more than 70 units on his recent golf picks.

CJ Cup Byron Nelson betting guide: 5 picks our expert loves this week

Our expert likes Alex Noren's chances this week.

Getty Images

Welcome to our weekly PGA Tour gambling-tips column, featuring picks from GOLF.com’s expert prognosticator Brady Kannon. A seasoned golf bettor and commentator, Kannon is a regular guest on SportsGrid, a syndicated audio network devoted to sports and sport betting. You can follow on Twitter at  @LasVegasGolfer , and you can read his picks below for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, which gets underway Thursday in McKinney, Texas. Along with Kannon’s recommended plays, you’ll also see data from Chirp,  a free-to-play mobile platform  that features a range of games with enticing prizes, giving fans all kinds of ways to engage in the action without risking any money.

For the fourth straight year, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson will be contested at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, just about a half-hour north of Dallas. If history holds true, we are in for a birdie-fest this week as the average score of the three prior editions of this tournament has been better than 24-under par.

It looks like weather will be a factor too. Rain and scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for each day of the event. It appears Thursday and Sunday will also be affected by wind. While moisture and possible electricity in the air could cause delays, any significant amount of rain could potentially soften up this golf course and make scoring even easier.

Weather delays are nearly impossible to predict which in turn makes it very difficult to spot a potential draw bias this week — that is, if either the early-late or late-early start times will catch an advantage. Thus, I have played it straight, handicapping the golf course and the field with all things being equal.

TPC Craig Ranch is a par-71 Tom Weiskopf design that stretches to over 7,400 yards. It features very wide fairways with very little rough and large bentgrass greens. Driving distance is not necessarily required this week but it is more important than driving accuracy, in my opinion. Long approach play will be a factor, as will making the most of the golf course’s long par 4s, and taking advantage of the three par 5s. With another birdie-fest being the expectation, I have also looked at players who excel in making birdies and players who putt at a high level.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds: Our long-shot pick eyes his second PGA Tour win

Golf courses making the list this week that feature very similar layouts and thus require similar skill sets for success are Port Royal Golf Club (where they play the Bermuda Championship), Memorial Park in Houston, TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, and Detroit Golf Club, where they hold the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Note that wind is also a typically present weather factor in Bermuda, Las Vegas, and Houston.

In returning to a standard stroke-play format this week, we will also return to playing our selections for both an outright win and a top-20 finish.

Alex Noren (25-1)

Noren has yet to miss a cut in 2024 and, along the way, has racked up six top-25 finishes. He is No. 1 this week on the correlated courses, having collected top-5 finishes at each venue, including a runner-up finish at Port Royal. Over the last 36 rounds, he ranks 17th in this field for both SG: Approach and SG: Putting (bentgrass). He also ranks sixth on Par 4s measuring between 450-500 yards and is eighth for SG: Par 5s. On top of all this, Noren is a very good wind player.

Byeong Hun An (30-1)

An is my only selection this week who is not traditionally a good putter. But off-setting that is the fact that he bombs it off the tee and is No. 1 in this field for Birdies or Better Gained over the last 36 rounds. He is also excellent on lengthy approach shots, ranking in the top 14 for Hole Proximity from 175 to over 200-yards. I also like the form this season with top-20 finishes or better at the Sentry, the Sony Open, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Masters.

Adam Schenk hits drive at 2023 Tour Championship at East Lake

Adam Schenk (40-1)

When looking at the stats, one has to like the combination of areas of success for Schenk: being upper tier in SG: Off the Tee, on the long Par 4s, and being an excellent putter. Keep that up all week and you just might have an outright winner. In 2023, Schenk had the best season of his career, and he’s held serve for the most part in 2024 with a 17th-place finish in Phoenix, a 19th at the Players Championship, a fifth-place finish at the Valero Texas Open, followed by a 12th at the Masters.

Mackenzie Hughes (45-1)

Over the last 36 rounds, Hughes ranks 26th in this field on the 450-500 yard Par 4s and is fourth for SG: Par 5s. Like Schenk and Noren, he too is one of the best putters in this field, ranking 14th out of 156 players. The form this season has been very strong, only missing one cut in 10 starts and finishing inside the top 40 seven times, including a third-place finish at the Valspar Championship and a 14th in Houston, both happening as recently as last month. Already a two-time career winner on Tour, last year Hughes finished 14th at TPC Craig Ranch.

Maverick McNealy (55-1)

Like Hughes, McNealy too has only missed one cut this season in 10 stroke-play event starts, with top-10 finishes at both the WM Phoenix Open and the Players Championship. Similar to Schenk’s numbers, McNealy is top-tier in this week’s rankings for SG: Off the Tee, on the long Par 4s, and is No. 2 in this field for SG: Putting (bentgrass) over the last 36 rounds. On the correlated courses, McNealy has top-10 finishes at TPC Summerlin and Detroit Golf Club, and has two top-20 finishes at Memorial Park in Houston.

Who Will Win the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro?

Field finalized for 2024 cognizant founders cup.

  • LA Championship
  • Tournament News

pga tour championship east lake 2023

The fans may be missing Nelly Korda this week, but it’s doubtful that her fellow competitors are. Fresh off her fifth straight win and second career major championship victory, Korda has decided to take a week off. Even though the No. 1 player in the world will be absent, the field is still terrific at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, as 144 competitors are ready to challenge one another for a share of a $3.75 million purse.

Seventeen of the top 25 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings are competing, and the top 65 and ties will play the weekend. The first-place finisher will take home $562,500, which is one of the largest non-major winner’s shares on Tour. Wilshire Country Club has hosted all five previous editions of this event, and the average winning score is 13-under. Wilshire is a classic design and a very tough test. Last year, Hannah Green won with a four-day total of 9-under as the layout played like a true major test.

The weather will be dry and moderately windy this week. Temperatures are forecasted in the mid-70s, and the par-71 layout measuring 6,447 yards will play much like it should. It’s fun to see any Tour compete at a classic venue, and this setting amongst the Hollywood Hills always gives fans tremendous theater. To predict the winner among this betting board, let’s take the traditional approach and look at the last two leaderboards.

The two most impactful strokes-gained categories that correlate to success around Wilshire Country Club are approach play and putting. The top 10 from the 2022 and 2023 leaderboards gained an average of four strokes with their iron game and flat stick. Since classic courses always seem to require great approach play, keep your eye on Minjee Lee, Alison Lee, Megan Khang and Rose Zhang. Minjee Lee won here in 2019 and has earned two more top-seven results at this property.

Putting always helps on greens like those at Wilshire. Classic complexes with putting surfaces averaging 5,000 square feet in size present small targets. This championship course is nestled in a hilly city neighborhood, so when you putt, experience with the breaks and green-reading skills are required. Mao Saigo, Hyo Joo Kim, Sarah Schmelzel and Sei Young Kim lead the field in putting ability. They should have an advantage this week, with Sei Young Kim finishing inside the top six here twice.

The par-71 layout only has three par 5s, and these holes are the key to scoring. Looking at those same two groups of top-10 finishers, each played the par 3s and 4s near par. Surviving those holes will only keep you near the rest of the competitors. To contend, you must take advantage of the par 5s.

Those same 23 athletes who finished in the last two top 10s averaged 4.66 strokes on the 5s. Patty Tavatanakit, Georgia Hall, Xiyu Lin and Charley Hull lead the field in par-5 scoring. In a race to 13- or 14-under, they will have a considerable scoring advantage.

The last characteristic this year’s champion should have is a successful scrambling percentage. Small greens, a layout with 127 bunkers and 13 holes where water comes into play will make players get creative around these tiny targets. The contenders from 2022 and 2023 were successful around the greens 64% of the time, a rate that is well above the Tour average.

In this group, Ayaka Furue, Lin, Khang and Hyo Joo Kim can really score from close range. They will need to because if they don’t hit greens in regulation like Haeran Ryu, Nasa Hataoka and Hull, their short game will be tested. It becomes pretty clear by looking at those past two leaderboards what an awesome exam Wilshire Country Club is. Favor those above who are in fine recent form.

Sei Young Kim has had a sensational spring and Haeran Ryu made a serious run at The Chevron Championship. Who are you picking?

After all, that’s the point. By selecting a couple of names, you create a connection to the action. It’s fun for me to know who’s on my list, so you should definitely write your own. Once you do, the entertainment on Sundays will draw you in like a great Hollywood ending, much like the golf will this week at the JM Eagle LA Championship.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Nelly Korda couldn’t have imagined the incredible run she’s put together this season while at home recovering from a blood clot that required surgery in 2022.

“Because obviously then I was just more scared for my health,” she said. “Competing was kind of on the back seat. I was not thinking about competing at all. But I think all of the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today.”

Fully healthy now, Korda is seemingly unstoppable. The world’s No. 1 player hasn’t lost a tournament since January, and now she’s a two-time major champion.

Korda etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books Sunday, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women’s PGA Championship.

“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here,” she said.

Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

She had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th , with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Her parents — former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda and Regina Rajchrtova — beamed as she was presented with the trophy.

“She had a difficult ’22 and ’23 in certain ways,” Petr Korda said. “She did not win a tournament in ’23 and some things probably made her humble and (she) put a lot of work into where she is right now. Without the work and commitment, she would not be here. So seeing that, I’m very happy.”

Korda’s older sister, Jessica, is a six-time LPGA winner who’s taking a break from golf after giving birth to her first child.

Korda took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, a significant increase from last year’s purse of $5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $2,424,216 and her career earnings to $11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie’s Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by doing a cannonball off a small dock into brown-tinged water. World No. 2 Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. Vu withdrew from this year’s tournament before the first round after experiencing “severe discomfort” in her back during warmups.

While still shivering from her post-win plunge Sunday, Korda confirmed she’ll be competing in the JM Eagle LA Championship next week in Los Angeles. She was then asked about the possibility of becoming the first to ever win six straight LPGA tournaments.

“I’m going to enjoy this right now and then I’ll think about that,” she said. “But yeah, it’s been an amazing time. Hopefully keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row, too.”

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is on a similar tear, on his way to a fourth victory in five starts until rain interrupted the final round of the RBC Heritage . He couldn’t help but check in on Korda.

“I actually was checking the scores this afternoon when we were in the rain delay,” he said. “I’m extremely happy for her and proud of her. That’s some pretty special stuff. It’s been a treat to watch.”

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning on a windy and unseasonably cool day. She was wiped out after her big win because she’d been up since 4 a.m. to prepare for the end of the third round.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for third with Brooke Henderson.

Coughlin got emotional when discussing her best finish in a major.

“It’s really cool to see all of the work that I’ve put in, especially with my putting and my short game, and putting specifically showed off this week, as well,” she said.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year. But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes of the fourth round. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.
