The Best Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames, London
June 22, 2021

The Best Things to do in Kingston Upon Thames
Why kingston.
Just 30 minutes by train from central London, Kingston upon Thames pulls off something of a magic trick. Part stand-alone neighbourhood village, with unique medieval buildings and history. Part seamless modern space with shopping options to convert even the most devour of puritanical monks into the 21st century consumer capital.
Kingston works as a launchpad into the world of history, shopping and leafy riverside walks. And though I lived there during my doctoring days, a new hotel just outside the busy centre brought me back.
Let me tell you all about the best things to do in Kingston, as well as take you through a review of the new hotel, The Kingston 1. And just before you think there are too many kings in that sentence…my address used to be Mr & Dr King, Kingston Hill, Kingston. For real.
What is there to do in Kingston upon Thames?
What is Kingston upon Thames famous for?
Here’s the short version:
- Leafy riverside walks and cafes
- The Bentalls Centre and every shop you could dream of
- Wild open parks like Richmond Park and Bushy Park
- Hampton Court Palace – the former home of King Henry VIII
Disclosure: if you book or buy through any of the links on this page, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Some, but not all, of the experiences mentioned were gifted. However, as ever, as always, we keep the right to write what we like and make our own recommendations. There’s just no point otherwise!
When should you visit Kingston upon Thames?
You’ll find plenty of things to do in Kingston Upon Thames all year around. However, if lazing by the river is high on your agenda, then your best bet is during the summer months of May to September. Although, as with everything to do with the weather in Britain: nothing is guaranteed.
The Best Things to do in Kingston upon Thames, London
Browse Kingston Ancient Market
On any day of the week, head to Ancient Market Place Kingston to find Kingston’s market going strong. It’s been going strong since around 1170 or so, selling flowers, fresh vegetables, pastries and street food. Each winter, twinkling lights and sugar dust turn Kingston Market into one of the best Christmas Markets in London.
Stroll along the riverside
A beautiful path meanders along the banks of the Thames, dotted with cafes and restaurants and under the watchful eye of mallard ducks and swans. Watch rowing boats glide past and think about how much history has taken place just upstream and downstream of this spot.
Shop in the gleaming Bentall Centre
I’m not the first to notice the similarity between houses of worship of the past and shopping centres of the present. But following that line of thought makes the Bentall Centre the St Paul’s Cathedral or Notre Dame of shopping malls.
Gleaming in geometric white, the Bentall Centre is home to more than 1000 different brands in more than 75 shops and stores. Even if shopping is not your thing, it’s worth paying a visit to marvel at the design.
Shop in the independent boutiques
While the Bentall Centre and the Ancient Market are focal talking points, for obvious reasons, Kingston’s trading and shopping offering runs beyond those two. You’ll find specialist shops for old vinyl records, craft beer, haberdashery and more as well as the fresh produce of the market and big names of the Bentall Centre and High Street.
Take architecture tours
One of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames in London involves travelling back through time through bricks and mortar. From the gleaming, modern Bentall Centre to the flavours of Kingston’s ancient market and the All Saints Church, you can spot sculptures, facades, shields and all kinds of architectural accoutrements.
But all is not as it appears. Take the Jack Wills building above, full of dark Tudor beams and saints and shields. And although Hampton Court Palace, a Tudor stronghold, lies just across the river, this Tudor facade is, well, a facade.
It was constructed during the Victorian era to add a sense of grandeur to this meeting place of Saxon Kings.
You can walk around Kingston yourself easily enough, but to get more from the experience, try out an architectural tour like this.
Visit the Rose Theatre
The Rose Theatre in Kingston takes its inspiration from the Rose Theatre of the first Elizabethan era, a place where Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe saw their work come to life. This new version has a few more comforts than the original, however. You’ll notice a roof and some comfortable modern seats. Thankfully.
Sip cocktails and dine at the Kingston 1
In the name of nothing but research, I caught up with an old friend to try out the new cocktails at Solo Restaurant at the Kingston One Hotel. Freshly made, the Solo Martini had a sense of sophistication, while the Pornstar Martini had a dreadful name but refreshing, pomegranate taste.
You can also dine here and sip cocktails elsewhere but more about that later.
Roam around Richmond Park
One of the best things to do in Kingston upon Thames involves enjoying the outdoor activities along the river and in Richmond Park. When I lived in Kingston, I went cycling every morning through Richmond Park. It’s one of the Royal Parks, with free access and maintained gardens, cycle paths and hiking routes.
If you go there quietly, you’ll likely see deer wandering through the grass.
Visit Hampton Court Palace
Ah, Hampton Court Palace. The huge, imposing former home of one of England’s most notorious of monarchs: King Henry VIII. Yes, he of the six wives, the split with Rome and the reformation and the series involving Jonathan Rhys Meyers, depending on your preference for history and pop culture.
Originally owned by Henry’s most trusted adviser, Cardinal Wolsey, it became Henry’s as the former slipped from power and the high stakes nature of Tudor life took its toll.
Several other royals lived here afterwards, but it’s the Tudor period that keeps the crowds coming back and trying to make sense of it all.
The Tudor Kitchens
A Tudor soundtrack greets you as you first head under the arch and across the cobblestones. Props and displays list the banqueting feast orders and provide a glimpse into the daily lives of the staff who worked here.
Elsewhere, you can see the small chapel where royal christenings and funerals took place, as well as the grand hall where various queens took turns at being alive and well before things soon took a turn for the worse.
Planning a trip to Hampton Court Palace
Have I mentioned yet that it’s a big, big place? Plan on giving yourself at least half a day to make your way around. Perhaps even a full day if you’re a big fan and want to spend plenty of time in the gardens.
During normal times, you’ll find a functioning cafe and car park, as well as toilets and plenty of benches.
Where to Stay in Kingston upon Thames, London
You’ll find plenty of options for somewhere to stay in Kingston, from vacation rentals to budget and business hotels.
Yet I’d like to highlight the Kingston 1, a boutique spot just far enough from the crazy centre to give you some peace, but close enough to walk to in less than 10 minutes. Here’s my review of the Kingston 1 hotel.
The Kingston 1 Hotel Review
Describing itself as a “new hotel, neighbourhood restaurant and bar off the beaten track,” the Kingston 1 is a whole lotta fun.
It’s hardly off the beaten track at all, being just ten minutes walk from the Bentall Centre. But it is far enough away that you feel as though you’re in a real London neighbourhood, not a tourist trap.
The vibe is understated modern cool but it’s definitely not pretentious. With 22 rooms, it’s small but not tiny but it does hold a hallowed resource when it comes to London hotels. Limited, but some, parking spaces available.
It is, as they say, ideal for staycationers, foodies and business travellers.
Decked out in cool white and charcoal, with splashes of blue and gold, the decor is calming in each of the 22 rooms. Two suites provide an additional living area and premium bar area, while the other guest rooms come as Standard Double, Standard King, Executive Double and Executive King.
You’ll hear the authentic London soundtrack outside and it’s still a busy spot. Personally, I find this soothing and enjoy the sense of place, but if you’re looking for silence and solitude, it’s wise to pack some ear plugs.
Toiletries come from The White Company’s Noir collection and, to many a woman’s relief, include conditioner as well as the standard shampoo, shower gel and body lotion supplies.
The Restaurant
The main restaurant, Solo at the Kingston 1, shrugs off the bland feel of many a hotel restaurant with innovative decor and creative food.
Open to the public, including for breakfast and brunch, Solo ups its game further on Thursday to Saturday. Then Head Chef Marco Palazzo from The Hoxton and Jamie’s Italian brings out his chef’s menu, a mix of Italian technique with local British produce.
I chose the signature charred octopus tentacle with olive tapenade, while my friend chose the spinach and ricotta cannelloni. I then opted for the rib eye steak and finished off with the chocolate fondant with hazelnut praline.
The open plan ground floor moves from restaurant to cafe to lounge bar and reception, making good use of the space and switching atmospheres as it goes.
The cocktails are divine. Especially the horribly named but tangy-sweet pornstar martini.
What I Loved
- The cool decor in the rooms and warm and welcoming lounge area.
- The friendly, attentive staff.
- The parking space!
- The fantastic location to get out and explore.
- The charred octopus.
- The cocktail list.
What To Know
- There’s no lift (elevator) so you need to carry luggage upstairs.
- You’ll hear the sounds of London life through the windows.

Getting to Kingston upon Thames
Kingston upon Thames sits in greater London on the River Thames, just 12 miles from Westminster and 25 minutes by train to London Waterloo. Kingston has its own station but you may find more frequent connections from nearby Surbiton station and Norbiton station. All three stations lie within zone 6 and can be accessed with the Oyster Card. Surbiton town centre is quieter than Kingston, so I wouldn’t recommend a stay there unless you have a specific reason to go there.
If driving in London freaks you out, bear in mind that the roads around Kingston upon Thames are more genteel than those around Marble Arch and Oxford Circus.
Kingston is close to the M3, A3 and M4 and only 8 miles from the M25. Parking is relatively easy, with numerous car parks, but costs can be high. You can also easily drive from central Kingston upon Thames to Hampton Court Palace, which has its own car park.
Kingston’s closest airport is the international behemoth Heathrow Airport, with good bus and taxi connections between the two. You can also, of course, travel to Gatwick Airport or London City Airport, but the connection will take longer.

Things to do in South West London from Kingston in Detail
1. visit kingston ancient market.
One of the top things to do in Kingston Upon Thames is to browse the Kingston Ancient Market. The open air market in Kingston is a great place to pick up some fruit and veg or grab a bite for lunch.
2. Seek "Out of Order"
David Mach's "Out of Order" is probably Kingston's most famous tourist attraction. Located at the end of Old London Road, "Out of Order" depicts several bright red phone booths tipping like dominos.
This modern art installation has been in place for over 10 years and is a popular South West London photo spot.
3. Tour Strawberry Hill House and Gardens
Catch the bus from Kingston to Strawberry Hill House and Gardens. This neo-Gothic mansion was built in Georgian times by Horace Walpole, son of England's first Prime Minister.
Insider Strawberry Hill House, you'll find amazing period stained glass protected by pocket shutters.
Pay 12.50 GBP for a self-guided tour. Knowledgeable docents in each room are a wealth of information about the house and historic personalities who lived there.
One of the most memorable scenes from Strawberry Hill House is the bright red gallery with gold leaf ceiling featuring a historic painting of Catherine de Medici and 4 of her 10 children.
The painting was donated in lieu of paying inheritance tax (apparently a fairly common thing in England).
4. Make a Pitstop for Coffee and Cake at The Mugs Patisserie
We walked from Strawberry Hill House to Twickenham, about a 10 minute walk.
We enjoyed a slice of carrot cake plus eggs with avocado puree on toast served with an Americano at The Mugs Patisserie. Mugs looks kind of unassuming from the outside, but the food is fab!
5. Enjoy an Indian Feast at Atithi in Twickenham
If you are hungrier for more than just cake and coffee, I recommend enjoying an Indian feast at Atithi in Twickenham. Poppadoms and spicy dipping sauces took the edge off our appetite. We followed it up with fish pieces atop a spicy green sauce.
Vegetarian curry, rice, and naan rounded out the meal nicely. They even brought me a bowl of chopped raw chillies to kick things up a notch.
My eyes were watering from the spicy food as I looked around to appreciate the decor. Atithi is definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in South West London.
6. Shop Church Street in Twickenham
Walk into Twickenham and onto pedestrianized Church Street. Browse quaint shops selling unique local souvenirs or simply bask in the atmosphere and grab some photos for your Instagram feed.
7. Stroll York House Gardens
Emerge at the end of Church Street and head into York House Gardens. It's fun to amble through York House Gardens along a very quiet section of the River Thames in Twickenham.
Follow the promenade along the river. We took a short detour when we spotted some statues peeking above the hedges and discovered a delightful and mossy ornate Italian fountain.
Continuing on, we found all sorts of colorful wildflowers. Another small mossy pond was tucked away down a narrow path over a wooden bridge.
We left the York House Gardens through an open gate and once again found ourselves along the river.
8. Tour Eel Pie Island
Make sure to take a brief tour of Eel Pie Island, another place to visit in South West London with fascinating history. Eel Pie Island was famous for its Jazz and Blues clubs in the 1960s.
We crossed the bridge to the island and spent about 15 minutes walking around. We were faced with gates and 'private property' signs at every turn. It wasn't a particularly inviting place.
The one exception was the Loveshack whose gate was wide open. I smiled when I saw the notice posted on the gate: Notice: Thank you for noticing this new notice. Your noticing it has been noted.
We left the island and continued a short walk along the Thames. We discovered an informational sign that highlighted some of the musical artists that got their start on Eel Pie Island.
9. Stop for a Drink at the White Swan on the Thames
We'd done a lot of walking and exploration at this point and decided to stopping for a cheeky afternoon drink (Sipsmith Gin and Tonic for me!) at the White Swan on the Thames in Twickenham.
Sit out on the porch near the entrance or on the terrace closer to the Thames. We saw some tide markings which led me to believe that sometimes the terrace is inaccessible when the river is running high.
Fortunately for us, there were no issues on the day that we visited and we were able to enjoy our quiet drink against the backdrop of the Thames.
10. Visit Orleans House Gallery
We continued our walk along the Thames Path between Twickenham and Richmond in South West London. In the process, we stumbled upon Orleans House Gallery.
Check out free modern art exhibits and a chance to see the historic Octagon Room. We were encouraged to move around the pieces in an exhibit about the Nile to contribute to an ever-changing narrative, much like the ever-changing nature of the Nile River itself.
11. Walk Marble Hill Park
We continued on to Marble Hill Park. The park was quite large and we passed the coach house and ice house before arriving in front of Marble Hill House, a Palladian mansion built for the mistress of King George II.
Marble Hill House and Park is worth a visit if you are passing through the area, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit if I didn't have another reason to be in this area of South West London.
12. Enjoy Coffee and Cake at Islay in Teddington
We took the bus from Marble Hill Park to Teddington, another super-quaint place to visit in South West London.
We took the opportunity to pop into Islay Coffee and Cake to warm up with an espresso. Islay Coffee and Cake had a great local vibe.
13. Walk Along the River Thames from Teddington Lock to Kingston.
Properly fueled from the coffee break, take the opportunity to walk the Thames Path from Teddington Lock back to Kingston.
The walk takes about 45 minutes and largely traces the course of the River Thames. We emerged among lovely shade trees and the calls of parrots in Canbury Gardens in Kingston.
Kitschy flamingo boats, swan boats, and house boats covered in items of flair proliferate along the Thames in Kingston.
14. Indulge in Indian Food for Dinner at Chakra
If you are looking for a hearty and authentic meal in Kingston Upon Thames, grab Indian food for dinner at Chakra. Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka, and Lamb Rojan Josh hit the spot after our long walk back from Teddington.
Chakra is situated right along the Thames and sports views of historic Kingston Bridge.
15. Drink a Gin and Tonic at Chadwick's House of Zoology
We wandered past Chadwick's House of Zoology, noticed what appeared to be three storeys of forest growing inside and just had to go in. Most people were upstairs where we were told they serve "theatrical" drinks.
We stayed downstairs where they serve an extensive menu of gin and tonics and other cocktails. We loved having the place to ourselves. We absolutely loved the Red Admiral made with hazelnut bourbon and a surprise chocolate truffle.
I can't resist an extensive gin menu with recommended pours. I opted for Portobello Road Gin with London Essence Pomelo and Pink Pepper Tonic.
We absolutely loved Chadwick's House of Zoology! It's the perfect place for a mid-week workcation cocktail in South West London.
16. Take a London Workcation Coffee Walk
One of our favorite things to do on a workcation is explore local coffee shops on a morning walk. We really appreciated the opportunity to get an early start to explore a place like Kingston and have it all to ourselves.
Beanberry Coffee became our go-to place for coffee during our week in Kingston. On one visit we had a well-crafted oat latte and tried two different espresso beans: JavaScript and Wildcat.
The next time we opted for V60 drip coffee. We tried the 8am Blues seasonal blend and a single-origin Ethiopian brew.
Beanberry proved to be great fuel for our walks! We picked up a flat white and some beans to take home on the final day of our workcation.
On one of our other morning walks in Kingston Upon Thames, we stopped for coffee at Forunella Cafe.
We paired a respectable cappuccino with a pan au chocolat from Olivier's Bakery at the Kingston Ancient Market.
Coffee in hand, keep an eye out for cool mosaic street art under the train bridges in Kingston. Alternatively, take a stunning morning walk on a sunny day along the Thames in Canbury Gardens in Kingston.
We loved the life-like reflections in the water and a surprising number of swans in flight. Swans are so elegant in the water yet so awkward in the air!
17. Sample English Rose
One of the great things about a workcation is that you can stock the kitchen and try some local specialties. We finished one of our workdays with *gasp* an English wine.
A rose from Aldi caught my eye because of the pink door on the bottle (my regular readers know how much I love door photography , especially Dublin door photography ).
It turns out that this particular English Rose was a respectable offering! I would definitely buy it again.
18. Spend the Day at Hampton Court Palace
We started with a tour of Henry VIII's kitchen. The audio guide tour of Hampton Court Palace is free and really well done. Transport yourself back to the Tudor era and imagine what it took to put food on the King's table.
We got acquainted with Henry VIII and the fascinating tales of his six wives by touring his royal apartments.
It is rumored that the palace is haunted by Catherine Howard, Henry VIII's 5th wife who tried to escape her date with the executioner by running and screaming through the halls.
We especially enjoyed exploring Georgian history at Hampton Court Palace. Things I learned: when Queen Anne died in 1714 without an heir to the throne, England had to scramble to find a successor.
Many of Anne's closest relatives were Catholic so in the end Georg of Hanover in Germany became England's King George I.
We ended up touring Hampton Court Palace a bit out of order. Next up, the 17th century State Apartments of William and Mary.
We admired sumptuous decorations that escalated the deeper you went into their chambers. The State Apartments of William and Mary also featured an impressive and artistic display of arms.
It was fascinating to hear a different perspective about the "Glorious Revolution" in which William defeated then King James to take the throne.
Learn about the other side of the story at the Battle of the Boyne site in Ireland which can easily be combined with a weekend in Carlingford .
Hampton Court Palace is also known for its extensive and fabulous gardens. We checked out the coiffed trees, fountain, and long canal.
You may even catch a glimpse of the deer descended from Henry VIII's hunting herd. The Wilderness at Hampton Court Palace is indeed wild and covered with daffodils in March.
You can also check out the kitchen garden en route to the Tiltyard Cafe at Hampton Court Palace. Keep an eye out for hidden sculptures.
There is also a hedge maze at Hampton Court Palace. We decided to pass on it since it was overrun with school groups when we visited.
The Privy Garden at Hampton Court Palace was for the exclusive use of the monarch and their family. Today, you can wander freely. We really appreciated the great views and golden light in the afternoon.
There are a number of formal art galleries featuring works from the royal collection at Hampton Court Palace. Don't miss the Mantegna Gallery (accessible from the Privy Garden) with its collection of Roman sculptures and paintings dating back 500 years and covering the Triumphs of Cesar.
19. Take a Break at Little H at Molesey Lock
We took a break from exploring Hampton Court Palace to get coffee in the sun at Little H at Molesey Lock along the Thames Path.
There is a cafe at Hampton Court Palace, but Little H seemed like a much nicer option. A cappuccino and goat's cheese and apricot toastie enjoyed in the sun was just what we needed.
Walk through Hampton Court Village on your way back from Molesey lock. The village is just a block or two square but I found it to be incredibly picturesque.
20. Drink and Eat Your Way from Hampton Court to Kingston
We took the bus from Kingston to Hampton Court Palace (1.65 GBP with Oyster Card) but decided to walk back with a few pitstops on the way.
We grabbed a pint of Guinness to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in an idyllic setting at Ye Olde Swan in Thames Ditton.
Next up? We stopped for a surprisingly fun Plumble 11 cocktail (pink gin, Fernet Branca, Cocchi Rosa, strawberry, lemon, and plum bitters) served over crushed ice in a bright blue Roman head sipped on the Thames at Hideaway in Surbiton.
We finished the day with a Happy Hour Cocktail (blood orange and grapefruit gintonica) and dinner of fish and chips and a plant-based burger at Hart's Boatyard.
After dinner, we followed the Queen's Promenade back to Kingston. Without breaks, it would take about an hour and fifteen minutes to walk from Hampton Court Palace back to Kingston.
The food and drink breaks really made it more feasible for us. We logged over 20,000 steps for the day!
21. Have Coffee and Cake on Kew Green
Kew is a quaint South West London town. Take the bus from Kingston to Kew and enjoy coffee and cake at Sift. The place is pretty tiny.
There were just a couple of benches outside on a very trafficky street. We drank our coffee and ate our snack outside historic St. Anne's Church on Kew Green instead. Such a lovely spot!
22. Spend the Day at Kew Gardens
Another top tourist attraction in South West London is Kew Gardens. Did you know that The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew is one of 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in London?
We spent the day at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Enter via Elizabeth Gate on the Northeast corner of the gardens. The cost to enter Kew Gardens is 19.50 GBP per person if you book a timed ticket online in advance.
First stop? Bright orange Kew Palace and the Queen's Garden. We discovered very cool displays of blooms at Davies Alpine House at Kew Gardens.
Check out The Hive at Kew Gardens, a modern art installation that mimics the vibratory communication of bees.
One of the top things to do in Kew Gardens is tour iconic Palm House, a Victorian-era greenhouse. I loved the spiral staircase that allows visitors to get a bird's-eye view of the plants on display.
We discovered 10 different climate zones to explore in the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens. The orchids on display were particularly lovely.
Temperate House at Kew Gardens is the largest Victorian greenhouse still standing in the world and was recently refurbished.
Explore rare and exotic plants from around the world. Climb the spiral staircase for fantastic views both inside and out.
The Marianne North Gallery at Kew Gardens is an absolute must see. No photos allowed inside, but prepare to be dazzled by ~1000 oil paintings featuring flora and fauna from Ms North's travels around the world in the 19th century. Absolutely spectacular!
We caught a glimpse of the Pagoda at Kew Gardens and then ducked out of the Lion's Gate. From here the train station in Richmond is about 1 km away.
23. Get Lost in Richmond
We decided to walk from Kew Gardens to Richmond and take some time to explore this lovely South West London town. An adorable laneway caught my eye in Richmond which led me on a detour.
If not for this diversion, we likely would have missed out on our next stop... Time for craft beer and an afternoon snack at Tap Tavern Richmond.
We sampled lovely and surprisingly light calamari plus bread and vegetables with beetroot and pea hummus.
We took a little time to walk around and admire the magnificent Spring magnolias in Richmond before catching the bus back to Teddington for our dinner reservation.
24. Go Upscale for Dinner at One One Four in Teddington
Our time in London was drawing to a close. We decided to finish our trip with an upscale dinner at One One Four in Teddington.
The two (35 GBP) or three course (42 GBP) prix fixe at One One Four comes with focaccia, an amuse bouche (mini arancini ball), and a mini cocktail. I opted for a Gin and Tonic instead of wine with dinner.
The gin menu at One One Four was quite extensive. No slim line tonic though, buy hey, it was a special occasion so I just went with it.
We enjoyed a tuna tartare starter, cod and duck breast mains followed by a mini cheesecake pre-dessert at One One Four in Teddington. This was followed by an absolutely fabulous chocolate marquise and then petit fours with the bill.
Such a fantastic meal in Teddington to finish off our workcation trip to South West London!

The best things to do in Kingston with kids
It’s always the way – there’s so much out there to discover that we forget to explore what’s right on our doorstep, so while I live under an hour away, my daughter was one before I managed to start exploring Kingston with kids.
contains affiliate links *
Needless to say, we’ve been back more than once since then as there are more things to do with kids in Kingston upon Thames than you might expect.
The ancient market town might not have such a high profile today as when Saxon kings were crowned there, but there’s still a lot to discover, not least the ‘Coronation stone’ in the grounds of the Guildhall as well as a daily market in Market Place.
Contents - click to jump to a section
Rose Theatre
One of the biggest attractions in Kingston for kids, the Rose Theatre was modelled on the original Elizabethan Theatre on Bankside in Longon, also called the Rose.
Today, you can find everything from musicals to Shakespeare as well as plenty of family-friendly productions – such as an adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom, Zog, and The Smeds and the Smoos, as well as a live Hey Duggee show.
You’ll also find lovely sessions for toddlers and preschoolers at the Rose, including Monkey Music.
The Coronation Stone
Wander past the Guildhall and you might wonder why there’s a chunk of stone surrounded by railings – until you get a bit closer and discover its fascinating origins.
The ancient Sarsen block – the same kind of stone used to build Stonehenge – dates back over a thousand years, linked to the site where seven Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned centuries ago.
Today there’s an engraving showing the names of the seven kings crowned here, including Ethelred the Unready in 979 as well as earlier kings dating back to the beginning of the 10th century.
Find the historic bridges
When you’re discovering the history at Kingston upon Thames with kids, you can’t miss the Clattern Bridge. One of the oldest intact bridges in England, it dates from around 1200, crossing the Hogsmill River.
The name supposedly comes from the clattering made by horses’ hooves as they crossed the cobbles over the bridge.
Much bigger, Kingston Bridge has its own memorable history. The original wooden bridge was constructed here in the 12th century and was the only crossing over the Thames until the 18th century, apart from London Bridge.
The first stone bridge followed in 1826 and it has been widened twice since then: follow the path downstream and keep your eye open for the location of the first bridge marked in the cobbles.
Explore the riverside
A walk along the Thames is a lovely thing to do at any time of year, and it’s as easy to go for a short stroll or a longer walk before refuelling in one of the family-friendly restaurants.
You could walk all the way to Richmond if you head off in one direction, or over to Hampton Court in the other, if you fancy a peek at the Tudor Palace (or a visit inside).
There’s also some green space to enjoy and a play area at Canbury Gardens, as well as restaurants and aces galore or just watch the swans gliding serenely along the Thames, narrowboats lined up along the bank, to add a splash of colour on a very grey day.
My daughter’s first visit to Kingston saw us checking out the burgers at Byron Burger Kingston, but you can also find a string of family-friendly options including Cote Bresserie and Bill’s, as well as Thai at Busaba, Indian food at Chakra and Lebanese at Comptoir Libanais, plus waterside pubs.
Head out on the river
Even better than walking by the river in Kingston is to get out onto the water itself.
If you like the idea of getting behind the wheel of a boat yourself, check out the different options from GoBoat London, with space for up to eight in each electric boat (and it’s dog-friendly as well).
You don’t need to have experience before you set off – there is training given on arrival, along with a route map of where to see along the river in West London between Teddington Lock and Molesley Lock, passing Hampton Court Palace .
You’ll get life jackets for babies and buoyancy aids for children too. The captain must be over 18.
Check out our review of GoBoat with kids from the central London location in Paddington
Or if you’d prefer someone else to do the hard work, the boat tours from Turks River Cruises have been travelling along the Thames for over 300 years.
The eye-catching boats (most famously a Mississippi style stern wheeler) run most days between Richmond, Kingston and Hampton Court, passing beautiful Hampton Court Palace, Teddington Lock and the quirkily fascinating Eel Pie Island.
Or Albany Park canoe and sailing centre runs courses and classes to help kids learn how to sail, as well as canoeing and kayaking sessions on the river.
Follow a Treasure Trail
For one way to discover some of the secret highlights of Kingston with kids, pick up a fun Treasure Trail around the town.
The spy mission takes you from the Market Square, with its gilded statue of Queen Anne and the historic buildings, decorated with notables from Kingston’s history, down to the river and passing lots of quirky details along the way.
With a puzzle to solve, the loop through Kingston stretches for just under two miles and takes around two hours to complete.
Discover some public art
There’s always new street art to spot as you explore Kingston upon Thames with kids, but keep your eyes open for a few special public artworks as well.
One of the most famous is Out of Order , where 12 red phone boxes lean against each other – the first still upright, and the rest tilting over in a curve until the last one lies almost flat upon the ground. The work by artist David Mach sits on Old London Road.
In the Market Place, spot Party Animal by Alex RT Davies, the winner of the 2021 Kingston Sculpture trail, with a traffic cone resting on a bronze goal’s back – the goat’s golden nose is getting shinier and shinier as passers-by rub it as they pass. It’s made to be interacted with, so climbing on the goat’s back is encouraged – a definite bonus if you’re visiting with kids.
Or head down to Riverside Walk, to see Echolocation by Mat Collishaw, an 11m long video installation in the undercroft between Cote and The Bishop Pub.
Plus there’s always something new to spot, with some of the latest eye-catching pieces of street art listed here .
Kingston Museum
Did you know that one of the early pioneers of film was born and died in Kingston upon Thames? Or that the town has links to aviation history as well?
Tracing the history of the town, Kingston Museum has a string of displays showing its Saxon heritage, right through to highlights from the last century, including some of the area’s most famous names.
There are also regular temporary exhibitions to enjoy, along with photos, artworks and more. Entry is free although the museum is currently only open on Thursday to Saturday.
Stanley Picker Gallery
A great place to visit in Kingston with teens, the Stanley Picker Gallery holds exhibitions and events throughout the year (though it closes during the summer months) featuring work by local artists and designers as well as students at Kingston University.
Set on an island along the Hogsmill river, it’s an easy walk from the town centre and there’s always something new to discover.
Visit Kingston Market
Given Kingston’s history, it’s no surprise to discover that the town’s market has an equally long pedigree – there has been a market in Market Square since at least the early 13th century.
Running every day, with just under 30 permanent stalls, you’ll find everything from a greengrocer and fishmonger to street food, and extra stalls appearing for the Kingston Christmas market or for other special events.
For more independent shops in Kingston, head to Old London Road, although you’ll also be spoiled for choice when it comes to high street shopping on Clarence Street and the Bentall Centre
Try an escape room
There are two different Escape Rooms in Kingston for kids, with puzzles that are perfect for families to try.
Kingston Escape Rooms has a sweet option for younger kids, helping the Crazy Cat Lady find her missing cats – suitable for age 5+ – as well as An Hour To Kill Hollywood.
Or the games at Escape Hunt Kingston are suitable for age 8+ with everything from pirate fun in Blackbeard’s Treasure, plus Journey to Atlantis, Alice in Puzzleland and Escape the Wild West.
There are Virtual Reality games here which are suitable for ages 12+ as well.
Find soft play
Sadly Caterpillars Cafe, the soft play at Kingston’s Bentall Centre (which my daughter loved when she was younger) has since closed, along with Jellybugs.
But you can still find soft play at The Pod , in the YMCA Hawker Centre. The two-storey soft play centre has something for all ages up to 11, with areas for babies and toddlers as well as space for older kids to be active.
The Sensory Room has also been refurbished, aimed at children under 24 months or with additional needs benefiting from sensory play. Plus there’s a riverside cafe for parents to grab a coffee while their kids let off steam.
PICNIC play village
Aimed at children aged six and under, the mini world of PICNIC is heaven for younger kids.
Inside the play village, with its mini town, little ones can head off to the shop to play at being a cashier or picking up essentials, fulfil a few dreams of being a firefighter, put on a performance in the theatre or cook up a few cakes in the bakery, as well as delivering the post for good measure.
It’s the kind of thing my daughter adored when she was little (where we tried something similar at places like Eureka Children’s Museum in Yorkshire), with 10 themed play areas set around the village square.
Mini golf & games at Pop Playrooms
The Rotunda Kingston is home from a brand new entertainment hub called Pop Playrooms , including nine-hole immersive mini gold plus American pool tables and AR darts.
And in between the fun, there are plenty of places to eat, including street food like Wing Wing for Korean-style crispy double-fried chicken, plus design inspired by a string of pop videos – perfect for tweens and teens.
Things to do near Kingston with kids
While there’s plenty to entertain families in Kingston upon Thames itself, you’ll find a few more great days out if you’re basing yourself in the town.
Hampton Court Palace
This spectacular Tudor Palace – ‘acquired’ by Henry VIII from Cardinal Wolsey – is one of my favourite things to do in London with kids and Hampton Court Palace is only around 10 minutes from Kingston with kids.
A fantastic place to get a taste of how the royal court lived, you can see everything from the sprawling kitchens catering to the inhabitants to a series of rooms decorated from different time periods, including grand Tudor ceilings and Georgian apartments, courtyards and thrones under canopies, plus the beautiful chapel royal.
As you walk along the Haunted Gallery, it’s said that Catherine Howard’s ghost can still be heard pleading for mercy.
Outside, there’s as much to see in the gardens. Home to the famous maze, the Magic Garden children’s playground is another favourite with kids plus there are regular family activities during school holidays – anything from Tudor sports to Easter hunts. Stop by the real tennis court as well to see if you can catch a display of Henry VIII’s favourite game.
Visit a Royal Park
The biggest of the royal parks, Richmond Park stretches for an astonishing 2,500 acres and is also a nature reserve.
Most famous for its herds of wild deer, both red and fallow deer, you’ve got a good chance of spotting them as you wander – the Tamsin Trail , along the edge of the park is ideal for families, as it’s almost car-free, and is a good path to follow to get a few glimpses.
It’s important to remember that they are wild animals though, so don’t try to feed them and always keep at least 50m away , especially during the rutting season (from September to November) and during May to July when fawns are born.
Don’t miss the pretty Isabella Plantation gardens, with lovely winding paths past the flowers and water, or on a clear day, climb King Henry’s Mound and look across towards St Paul’s Cathedral more than 10 miles away. It’s a protected view, so nothing is allowed to be built in the sightline.
You’re also close to Bushy Park , the capital’s second largest royal park, with its own deer herds, 17th century water gardens and gorgeous places to walk.
White Spider Climbing
Try a new challenge at White Spider Climbing in Surbiton, with the chance for kids to try taster sessions in holidays including options suitable for ages 5+, with separate sessions for younger kids and teens.
Or turn up for Clip and Go sessions for all ages and abilities, although children must weigh more than 15kg to try this.
There are also drop-in sessions for the Spider’s Castle play area, for children aged 3+, with a labyrinth to explore and towers and turrets to scale – there are bouldering routes for all abilities, plus passages to climb through and slides to discover if your kids don’t fancy climbing.
Jurassic Encounter mini golf
Dodge nine near life-size dinosaurs as you challenge yourself to the mini golf course at Jurassic Encounter.
The holes take you through prehistoric caves as well as past cascading waterfalls and over islands, with 18 holes in total.
The course in New Malden is only around 15 minutes from Kingston by car, or around 30 minutes by public transport.

When the eclipse will peak in your community
The total solar eclipse will take over the skies on Monday, but the time of when that starts and how long the celestial event will last will vary slightly depending on where you are viewing it from in Ontario.
On April 8, the moon will cross the path of the sun and Earth. The partial eclipse is set to start at around 2 p.m. and end at around 4:30 p.m. in Ontario, but that time will change depending on location.
- Download our app to get local alerts on your device
- Get the latest local updates right to your inbox
“Since the path of totality is going through southeastern Ontario, the earliest moment of totality will be in the southwestern part of Ontario at 3:12 p.m., and then by the time that it reaches the furthest part [in] southeastern Ontario, that’ll be at about 3:26 p.m.,” Daliah Bibas, researcher-programmer for astronomy and space sciences at the Ontario Science Centre, told CTV News Toronto in an interview.
Depending on where Ontarians are viewing it from, Bibas said, totality can last from under a minute to about four minutes long.
“In Toronto, totality is not going to happen,” Bibas said. “We are in 99 per cent coverage...so the highest amount of coverage we will see will also happen at 3:19 p.m.”

According to Bibas, Fort Erie is set to have the longest totality peak in the province, lasting about three minutes and 45 seconds.
Michael Reid, associate professor at the department of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Toronto, also pointed to Niagara Falls as being the closest to the centre of totality, where the peak will last for about three minutes and 31 seconds.
“I’ll give you a contrast, if you were in Oakville, for example, right on the very edge [on the path of totality], its a few seconds,” Reid said. “It’s a pretty big difference depending on how far you’re willing to go [and] fight through crowds.”
The reason why the timing changes depending on the location is due to where the city falls on the path of totality, both astronomers explained, where the darkest part of the shadow of the moon projects onto the Earth. Thankfully for Ontario, however, everyone will see part of it.
“All of Ontario is able to see a partial eclipse. The further south you go, the closer you’ll be to totality, with places like Hamilton, Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, Kingston, Burlington, being in the path of totality while places like Toronto and anywhere further north than that, even London, being really close to the path of totality but not exactly, those places will experience partial solar eclipses,” Bibas explained.
“Basically meaning that you will not see the corona of the sun, the outermost layer of the atmosphere.”
Here is when the eclipse will start, peak and end, depending on where you’re viewing it from in Ontario, according to timeanddate.com , which Bibas and Reid both pointed to as the most accurate data:
- Ajax , eclipse starts at 2:05 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., eclipse ends at 4:32 p.m.
- Barrie , eclipse starts at 2:05 p.m., peaks at 3:19 p.m., eclipse ends at 4:31 p.m.

Those who are planning to view the solar eclipse on Monday must not observe it with their eyes alone, as it is extremely dangerous to do so.
“It’s great to go out and look at it but people should really be reminded, especially if they’re supervising kids of anyone who needs a bit of extra supervision, not to look directly at the sun without special glasses,” Reid said, adding they should also buy certified glasses intended for eclipse viewing as there may be dupes out there on the market.
“Be aware that someone may also try and sell them fake glasses, or they may suggest other unsafe methods like sunglasses or smoked glass – none of those are a good idea.”
The next total solar eclipse for the Toronto area will not come again for more than 100 years, until 2144. However, the next partial eclipse will sweep the skies on Jan. 14, 2029.

Total solar eclipse: Canadians soak up once-in-a-lifetime spectacle
A once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse passed through portions of Eastern Canada on Monday, with several cities hosting an influx of sightseers who were eager to stand in utter darkness across the path of totality on April 8.
While estimates are not yet available, crowds did not appear as enormous as first anticipated and there were no major traffic incidents as of 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Still, the spectacle drew in people from far and wide and many attendees described feeling emotionally and spiritually moved by the celestial event.
The eclipse first hit Ontario from the south just before 2 p.m. EDT on Monday and departed Newfoundland just after 5 p.m. EDT, or 6:30 p.m. NDT.
Hot spots like Niagara Falls and Kingston, Ont., Montreal, and Fredericton, N.B., received maximum coverage, with some experiencing it for as long as three and half minutes as the moon passed between the sun and Earth.
Here’s more on what happened at some of the most popular spots hosting viewing events.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 3 mins. 43 secs. between 3:18 p.m. and 3:21 p.m. EDT
The last time the Fort Erie area saw a solar eclipse was in 1925 and another one won't be back until 2144.
Although the skies didn't clear entirely on Monday, most who travelled out to nearby beaches and the Peace Bridge weren't disappointed.
The municipality experienced the longest duration of darkness in Ontario, due to being closest to the centre of the path of totality.
Of the hundreds gathered on Waverly Beach to experience almost four minutes of darkness, most said it was time well spent.
"You know, I've been through a few partials and it was still exhilarating," said James Ballard, who travelled some 326 kilometres from Sarnia, Ont.
"I drove almost four hours to get here and I don't think it was a waste of time."
Local Ben Madsen, who savoured the three minutes and 46 seconds of dark skies, said it was simply "awesome."
"This is probably the most supernatural event I've ever seen in my life. It was pretty incredible," Madsen said.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 1 min. 47 secs. between 3:18 p.m. and 3:20 p.m. EDT
Hamilton was lucky enough to get a break in the clouds Monday afternoon, allowing several thousand to experience a couple of minutes of total darkness at Tim Hortons Field.
Overcast skies threatened to ruin the celestial event for much of the day, but blue skies emerged in the west over the Mountain just in time. The crowd cheered as the temperature dropped rapidly and darkness descended on the stadium during totality.
Several visitors from the Toronto area opted to travel down the QEW to get a total eclipse experience, including Mason Adams from Uxbridge, who was celebrating her 21st birthday.
"It was beautiful," a beaming Adams said.
"I'm so glad we made the choice to come. It was cleared up right in time. We got a really good view."
Another total eclipse will not be seen in Hamilton for another 120 years.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 3 mins. 32 secs. between 3:18 p.m. and 3:21 p.m. EDT
Video: Niagara Falls experiences total solar eclipse
The eclipse began its partial phase in Niagara Falls, Ont., at 2:04 p.m. Monday and hit totality at 3:18 p.m., lasting about three and a half minutes.
In January, National Geographic tagged the spot as the “most picturesque” place to view the eclipse with ideal vantage points and the “iconic waterfalls thundering in the background.”
With the city being a reasonable distance from half the population of North America, the spot was an attractive location that had the potential to draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors. However, clouds did not clear out in time for peak viewing.
Still, Global News senior correspondent Jeff Semple said the clouds shifted briefly at the moment of the total eclipse.
"The crowd where we were started screaming," he recounted.
Several attendees, some travelling from as far as Colombia, told Global News' Caryn Lieberman that they were not disappointed by the clouds and that the experience was emotionally and spiritually moving.
The last time Niagara Falls saw a solar eclipse was in 1925 and another one won't be back until 2144.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 2 mins. 52 secs. between 3:22 p.m. and 3:23 p.m. EDT
Video: Thousands gather at Kingston’s Fort Henry to view Solar Eclipse
Crowds gathered near the waterfront and around city hall in Kingston, Ont., could be heard cheering throughout the downtown as totality hit right on schedule at 3:22 p.m.
The cheers were followed by an eerie quiet at Confederation Park as the hundreds of people gathered to watch the glowing ring in the sky and took in the sudden nighttime conditions caused by the eclipse.
And then, just like that, the sun reappeared and the crowds cheered again.
Kingston seems to have avoided what city officials worried would be the “worst-case scenario” – hundreds of thousands of people clogging city streets following the eclipse.

Leading up to the eclipse the city had said anywhere between 70,000 and 500,000 visitors were expected to visit Kingston for the eclipse, depending on weather conditions.
Whether it was cloudy conditions that kept the big crowds away, the preparation of city officials who strategically planned viewing events across the city or a combination of both, the city appears to have avoided the worst of the gridlocked traffic officials had feared.
A city spokesperson told Global News an estimate of how many people actually visited Kingston would be made available on Tuesday.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 1 min. 26 secs. between 3:26 p.m. and 3:27 p.m. EDT
Video: Montrealers take in total solar eclipse at Parc Jean Drapeau
In Montreal, the show did not disappoint. Thousands flocked to Parc Jean-Drapeau, with some early birds arriving at 7 a.m. Monday. Organizers confirmed around 100,000 people took part in the festivities on the island.
Before the eclipse even began, the crowd was so big, it was being compared to what one might expect at a Taylor Swift concert.
The turnout was so imposing that authorities were forced to close off both ramps leading to the park from the Jacques Cartier Bridge just before 2:30 p.m.
The mood leading into the 90-second show was electric and when darkness fell cheering could be heard ringing out in various parts of the city where impromptu viewing parties were held.
According to the city, the last total eclipse in Montreal happened in 1932.
Tourists chasing the eclipse also converged on the Eastern Townships region of the province, with totality in some areas lasting up to three and a half minutes. Some, like Cathy Slaun White and Chris Robart, both in their 60s, went to great lengths for a chance at the best view.
After looking at the forecast on Sunday, they hopped into their car and drove all the way from Kingston, Ont., despite hotels in the Townships being fully booked.
"We stayed at the hotel Walmart parking lot," Robart said, adding that sleeping in the car was "worth it."
The local tourist town of North Hatley saw an influx of visitors usually only seen in the height of summer. One family flew in from Los Angeles via Dallas, while another family travelled 40 hours from Australia to reunite with relatives for the unique event.
Other Quebec municipalities in the path of totality included Sherbrooke, Lac-Mégantic and Cap-aux-Meules, with the total solar eclipse taking place between 3:25 and 3:40 pm. depending on the region.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 2 min. 12 secs. between 4:33 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. ADT
Video: New Brunswick Scout troop sees once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse
The first sighting in Fredericton, N.B., started with a partial phase emerging at 3:23 p.m. local time on Monday and the path of totality began at 4:33 p.m., lasting just over two minutes.
Other areas that experienced 100 per cent totality include Woodstock, Florenceville-Bristol and Miramichi. Each of those venues saw the sun's light covered by the moon for just over three minutes.
In Miramichi, a large crowd had amassed at the local airport by midday. As many as 15,000 were expected in total, with clear skies creating the ideal viewing conditions. A final crowd estimate is not yet available.
Among those gathered was Gregory MacIvor, 56, who was born and raised in Miramichi but now resides in Calgary.
He's been waiting since he first learned about the eclipse when he was 11 years old .
"I was worried. 2024? I might be working on a moon base by then. I might not get a chance to see it," he recalled.
Maximum totality (maximum coverage of the sun): 3 min. 15 secs. between 4:35 p.m. and 4:38 p.m. ADT in northern P.E.I.; 2 min. 54 secs. between 5:15 p.m. and 5:16 p.m. NDT in eastern Newfoundland
The path of totality also included the northern half of Prince Edward Island, a sliver of the northern tip of Nova Scotia and throughout central Newfoundland.
In fact, Newfoundland was the destination of the final viewing of the eclipse in North America.

However, some viewers across Ontario weren't too pleased with their experience.
Amanda Barlett paid over $100 total in tickets for herself and her two kids, but little was visible standing next to the viewing floor of the CN tower.
“I don’t think it’s any better. We’re probably at the best vantage point just because we’re higher relative to the crowds. There's a lot of buildup for not much view,” she said.
The mother of two and her kids admitted they were disappointed but aren’t sure if they would have gone outside the city if given a re-do.
“It was opening up. I got some good shots, and you could see the shadows changing."
Out at Niagara Falls, entertainers did their best to try to cheer up the crowds, especially as some made the journey bright and early, and travelled vast distances to secure what they thought would be a prime location.
However, their perseverance would pay off, with a sliver of a glimpse of the total solar eclipse coming near the very end.

Conditions clear up for Kingston as onlookers start to capture the event
Out in Kingston, Ont., conditions started to clear up to give viewers a chance to witness the rare celestial event.
Kingston is one of the major Canadian cities that will able to see a total solar eclipse, with totality beginning at 3:22 p.m. EDT.

Residents across Ontario gear up to witness a historic event — despite the challenges
Across Ontario, many are getting ready to witness the solar eclipse, such as in Kingston. However, on the ground reports show that the cloudy conditions in the sky aren't doing anyone many favours.

In Toronto, where a partial eclipse will be seen, many have flocked to the CN Tower to witness the event.
Toronto Metropolitan University students Teo Mesrkhani and his friend Charlie Zhao have reservations at the CN Tower restaurant. They didn’t move fast enough to get general admission, so they must spend at least $75 each to take in the view. General admission tickets were about half that cost.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so the next time is in 120 years , so this will be our only chance to do it. It made sense to splurge the money,” Mesrkhani said before heading to his table.

Poll: Will you be viewing the 2024 solar eclipse?
Forget city monuments, affordable transit, or rising leisure time. There’s nothing quite like the rare solar eclipse to set off a tourism boom — and right now, as people gather together to honour the historic event, Canada is profiting big time.
Many of the key cities on the path — including Kingston — have reported seeing a rise in hotel occupancy for the big day, with travellers heading to Niagara Falls expected to spend at least $1,000 per night for a room if they haven’t booked already.

What if it's cloudy during the eclipse? Here's what to look out for.
If you happen to be in a cloudy spot during the eclipse, all is not lost.
According to Matthew Cappucci, a meteorologist and atmospheric scientist for the MyRadar app, you’ll still be able to see the moon’s shadow sweep across the sky even if it's cloudy. Chances are it will be dark and cloudy overhead, but the horizon around it will still appear bright.
“It looks very weird — like you’re in the middle of this ring,” he told Gizmodo , noting that you'll likely experience a sudden change in wind speed and see unusual animal behavior due to the spontaneous darkness.
“You can still experience it with your ears because the birds might change their roosting songs,” Patricia Reiff, professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, told Time magazine. “You might experience it with your eyes because the dogs and other animals are lying down and acting as though it’s the evening.”
Even Bill Nye the Science Guy said an eclipse is super cool no matter how cloudy it is.
“It'll still be an eclipse,” Nye told the Austin American-Statesman . “Be in the moment for these four minutes. Just settle in and enjoy it. It's spectacular.”

What time and where will the 2024 solar eclipse be visible in Canada?
In Canada, the solar eclipse's path of totality will pass through some cities and towns in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, plunging them into darkness for a few minutes.
In the chart below, you will see listed all the major Canadian eclipse hotspots with the time of onset and duration posted beside.
Those living outside the eclipse's path will witness a portion of the moon blocking the sun, and this can range from 10% up to 99% depending on your proximity to the path of totality.
Below, see a chart of major Canadian cities that will witness a partial eclipse along with the percentage the moon will block the sun.
Solar eclipse 2024: What to expect from the weather, cloud forecasts across Canada
Cloud cover looks like it will impact parts of Canada that are subject to the solar eclipse's path totality. Forecasts are subject to change, which makes it crucial to check local conditions.
Here's the latest info from The Weather Network to help you understand what to expect:
Southern Ontario: Clouds with breaks of clearing
The moon’s shadow makes landfall on the northern shores of Lake Erie near Leamington at 3:13 p.m. ET. Totality will spend just fourteen minutes traversing Ontario, with lucky folks smack dab in the middle of the path of totality seeing midday darkness for about three minutes.
Clouds will play a starring role in Monday afternoon’s brief show.
A low-pressure system over the northern United States will spill some clouds over southern Ontario to start the day, so you’ll wake up to plenty of clouds.
However, in the final countdown to the eclipse, those clouds will begin breaking up across extreme southwestern Ontario. Folks down here—including Leamington and just south of Chatham —may wind up with a fine view anyway.
While Toronto proper may have clouds obscure the 99+ percent coverage of the afternoon sun, locations expecting totality around Hamilton and Niagara may start seeing peeks of clearing through the clouds. Here’s hoping for the perfect timing for the tremendous number of folks camping out across the region for totality.
Eastern Ontario: Eclipse may filter through high clouds
The moon’s shadow will sweep over Lake Ontario and cross over Cobourg, Belleville, Kingston , Brockville, and eventually Cornwall .
High clouds streaming over the region from that pesky low-pressure system in the northern U.S. will allow filtered sunshine to bathe the region on Monday afternoon. There’s also a chance we’ll see breaks emerge around totality.
This deck of cirrus clouds won’t make for ideal viewing during the eclipse, but it’s not a complete deal breaker. While onlookers may not see a perfect disk in the sky with all the celestial trimmings , the eclipsed sun should still be visible through high-level clouds, and the moon’s shadow will have a unique appearance in the sky as it passes overhead.
Folks who’ve seen eclipses with high clouds often say that the obstruction has a surreal, almost cinematic effect, making it look like a spaceship passing overhead.
Quebec: Clean and clear, especially in the east
Some of the best views of the eclipse in all of North America will unfold in the skies over southern Quebec on Monday, making this one of our go-to spots in Canada.
A ridge of high pressure over the region should hold off the advancing clouds long enough to provide just about everyone in the path of totality a crisp view of the event.
Skywatchers in downtown Montreal , Sherbrooke, and Saint-Georges are all likely to score a memorable experience amid mostly sunny skies on Monday afternoon.
New Brunswick and P.E.I.: The gold standard
Congratulations are in order for folks looking forward to totality over the Maritimes. Clear skies will provide a crisp view of totality throughout central and northern New Brunswick, as well as the western half of Prince Edward Island.
We’ll see totality cross the international border and arrive in Woodstock and Hartland, N.B., at 4:25 p.m. AT, lasting for a little over three minutes in each community.
The moon’s shadow will then cross over Fredericton , Doaktown, and Miramichi , before crossing the strait to darken the skies over western P.E.I., where folks in downtown Summerside will witness about one minute of totality beginning at 4:32 p.m. AT.
Newfoundland: Better in the west than the east
The island falls between a centre of high pressure to the west and a stubborn low-pressure system lurking over the ocean to the east. This system to the east will bring thick low-level clouds, onshore winds, and a risk for rain or drizzle during the eclipse.
As a result, Bonavista and Clarenville will see several minutes of daytime darkness without being able to see the eclipse itself.
If you’re eager to view totality in all its splendor, your best bet is to head toward Port aux Basques on the southwestern coast.
Partial eclipse graces the skies over Canada
Folks often say that a solar eclipse is “totality or bust.” That may be the case if you’ll settle for nothing less than absolute perfection. But a partial solar eclipse is pretty cool, too. Our skies always have something to offer nature lovers of all ages.
A partial solar eclipse is visible across all of Canada on Monday afternoon—for the lucky towns where clouds aren’t in the way.
That lumbering low over the northern U.S. will send ample cloud cover across northern Ontario and southern Manitoba, potentially hindering the view of the partial eclipse for towns like Timmins, Thunder Bay, and Winnipeg.
The best view of the partial eclipse is out west toward Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan. Calgary and Edmonton have an excellent opportunity to safely watch more than one-third of our sun slip behind the moon early Monday afternoon.
Unfortunately, most folks in Vancouver and throughout southern British Columbia will miss out on the event as a dreary system pushes ashore with thick clouds and rain.
It's official: Niagara Falls home to new Guinness World Record as over 300 people dress as the Sun
A Guinness World Record has officially been set in Niagara Falls, after 309 participants took part in the largest gathering of people dressed as the Sun. It beats the previous record of 287 set in China in December 2020.
The monumental event took place on a Hornblower Niagara City Cruises boat. Participants were told to arrive in black, yellow or white pants, and then were provided the Sun costumes by the City of Niagara Falls.
It's now surely a day to remember, as participants turn their attention toward witnessing the April 8 total solar eclipse in Niagara Falls.

What is the path of totality?
The path of totality is the centre line that the moon's shadow takes across the earth, Greg Lisk of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada explains.
"It is about 100 miles in diameter," Lisk says. "The size of the shadow as it rests on the earth depends on the angle that it is hitting the earth. As it moves from Mexico/Texas, it hits the earth full-on, but as it moves up through Canada, the shadow noticeably stretches over the curve of the earth."
Niagara Falls just moments away from being home to a new Guinness World Record
Hundreds of participants are boarding a Hornblower Niagara City Cruises boat, looking to take part in history and break a Guinness World Record.
With the total solar eclipse on the horizon, it's only right that the record that's set to be broken is for the largest gathering of people dressed as the Sun. At least 288 participants are needed to break a record that was set in China in December 2020.
Results are expected to be shared at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Previously, it was reported by a Guinness World Record adjudicator that about 400 people are already registered to board the boat, where they'll receive their costumes.

California man travels all the way to Niagara Falls to take in the total solar eclipse
It was expected that Canada was going to see a tourism boom thanks to the solar eclipse . Manning Aalsma from California is an example of that, after he and his family made their way to Niagara Falls, Ont. to witness the rare celestial event in person.
Seven years ago, Aalsma's dedication took him to Oregon to view the total solar eclipse. He'll now be one of many who are setting up their equipment along Niagara Falls, while hoping for clear skies.
"I think it'll still be pretty marvellous," said Aalsma.

What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when, at just the right moment, the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, according to NASA.
Types of solar eclipses :
Partial solar eclipse
Annular solar eclipse
Total solar eclipse
Hybrid solar eclipse
What makes the 2024 eclipse significant is this celestial event is a total solar eclipse, meaning that the Moon, for those in the path of totality will completely block all sunlight for several minutes.
Many of you have been wondering, "how do we know so far in advance there is going to be an eclipse on a set day?"
"We have known for decades there will be a solar eclipse in the region," explains Lisk. "We have calculated the moon's orbit so precisely that we know exactly at what moment the moon will block the sun's light from reaching earth," said Greg Lisk of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada .
Canadians up bright and early in Niagara Falls with a Guinness World Record on the horizon
Niagara Falls, Ont., is set to become a place of history on April 8 with a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the Sun.
An official Guinness World Records adjudicator, Mike Marcotte, has made the trip to Niagara Falls to document the attempt. The previous record of 287 was set in China in December 2020.
About 400 people are already registered to fill the Hornblower Niagara City Cruises boat, Marcotte told Yahoo Canada , where the attempt will take place. Previously, the city's mayor, Jim Diodati, said to The Canadian Press that those who will be on the boat will be provided the costumes.

Beauty or a bust? Where clouds may hinder Canada’s solar eclipse
Here's the latest info from The Weather Network , as they breakdown where in Canada we could expect "beauty or a bust."
Ontario may fight through clouds
Monday will start with a sprawling low-pressure system over the northern half of the United States. This storm will spill mid- to high-level clouds over southern Ontario during the eclipse.
By mid-afternoon, as we countdown the minutes to the eclipse, the atmosphere will be in the process of clearing across extreme southwestern Ontario. During that time, there are signs that peeks of sun will be emerging in Hamilton and Niagara, even, so here’s hoping for the perfect timing.
Good news: The Port Stanley to Leamington corridor is becoming a higher-confidence sunny zone.
We’ll continue to see clouds from the stateside low streaming into eastern Ontario, with mostly cloudy skies and occasional breaks of sunshine. It’s not an ideal location to take in the eclipse if you’re looking for an unobstructed view of totality, but it’s possible a break could emerge around the big moment.
Quebec and New Brunswick get a front-row seat
Some of the best odds of seeing a crisp eclipse with all the celestial trimmings will fall across eastern Quebec and New Brunswick.
A ridge of high pressure over the region will keep clouds to a minimum and offer mostly sunny skies on the day of the eclipse, keeping that region as our go-to spot anywhere in North America.
Sherbrooke, Saint-Georges, Hartland, and Fredericton look to be in fine shape for Monday.
The province is rewarded with the best viewing in all of Canada. Clear skies and simple sunshine are forecast across the path of totality.
Newfoundland’s odds seem to be improving a bit
Trends in recent computer guidance have shown more favourable odds for good viewing conditions across portions of Newfoundland. A trickier setup is in the cards here as the island falls between a slow-moving low-pressure system to the northeast of the island and a ridge of high pressure to the west.
This slow-moving system could bring thick low-level clouds, onshore winds, and possibly even some precipitation on the afternoon of the eclipse along Newfoundland’s eastern shores, including around Bonavista and St. John’s.
If you’re eager to see this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle, consider heading down toward Port aux Basques on the southwest coast or even a last-minute hop across the Gulf to New Brunswick.
Western Canada stands the best chance of seeing the partial eclipse
The low over the northern U.S. will make for poor viewing across a wide swath of northwestern Ontario and southern Manitoba.
Alberta will score the most optimal view of the partial eclipse with nothing but sunshine in your forecast for the event.
Unfortunately, most folks in B.C. will miss out as onshore flow and showers rain on your view of the partial eclipse. You can follow the action on Monday with our livestream across all of The Weather Network’s platforms.
Solar eclipse 2024: Snapshots of previous solar eclipses from Canada and beyond
