12 Things to Do Around Lake Zurich

places to visit in lake zurich

The fifth-largest lake in Switzerland, Lake Zurich is the focal point of much of the leisure and recreational activities of Zurich. The city sits at the northwest end of the long, narrow, arc-shaped lake. On both sides of the lakeshore close to the city, there are seasonal restaurants, bathing facilities, beaches, and watercraft rentals—enough to keep any outdoors enthusiast entertained and active.

Zurichers, like most people who live near lakes in Switzerland, seem to seek out every opportunity to be in and on the water, so when you visit Zurich, especially in warm weather, make like a local and spend some time enjoying its beautiful lake. Here are some of the top things to do in and around Lake Zurich.

Stroll, Bike or Scoot Along the Lakeside Promenade

Courtesy of Zürich Tourism

The easiest and most immediate way to take in the beauty of Lake Zurich is along the lakeside promenade, which runs for several kilometers along both sides of the lake and connects several lakefront parks. There are lanes for walkers, bikers, inline skaters, and those on electric scooters (the latter of which are everywhere in Zurich). A pleasant stroll will take you past parks, bathing facilities and beaches, and to lakeside restaurants and bars. The Bürkliplatz, right at the bottom of Bahnhofstrasse, is the midpoint of the promenade.

Take a Boat Ride

TripSavvy / Michela Sieman

At any time of year, a sightseeing boat ride on Lake Zurich is a way to get acquainted with another side of the city and appreciate the lake without getting wet—and it's one of our top things to do in Zurich . Lake Zurich Navigation Company  operates a large fleet of sightseeing vessels, including motorboats and steam-powered ships, which also serve as commuter vessels for people who work in Zurich but live in its bedroom communities along the lake. During warmer months, sailings are more frequent and varied and include themed cruises. Zurich Card holders ride for free on certain sailings.

Swim in the Lake

If you visit Zurich in the summertime, you'll notice that everyone is in the lake! Zurichers take to lake swimming at the first hint of warm weather, often when the water is still quite brisk. There are bathing facilities all along the lakeshore, which allow you to swim either in an enclosed "pool" area filled with lake water or just dive right into the open lake. You can also wade in just about anywhere along the lake, as long as there aren't posted signs telling you otherwise. Lake Zurich, like all of Switzerland's lakes and rivers, is crystal clear and clean.

Drink and Dine at a Lakeside Bar

Courtesy of Zürich Tourism

In warm weather months, lakeside bars and restaurants open up around Lake Zurich and are an essential part of socializing for Zurichers. Most are very casual, to the point you can jump in the lake and take a dip between courses. In Seefeld, on the eastern shore, Lake Side is a seasonal favorite. The Pumpstation is a casual spot close to the opera house. In the evenings, many bathing facilities convert to lively open-air bars.

See the Lake from a Stand-up Paddleboard

Glide across the smooth surface of Lake Zurich on a stand-up paddleboard—which can be rented from SUPSWISS and other vendors along the lakefront. SUPSWISS offers lessons and tours, including daytime and moonlight city tours via SUP. If you've never used a SUP before, we suggest taking your tour on a sunny day when the water is warm—just in case you fall in.

Hit a Lakeside Beach

Another delightful summer pastime in Zurich, lakeside beaches spring up all along Lake Zurich. Most are grassy lawns with small sandy beaches and swimming areas. Many have piers, boat rentals, picnic facilities, and snack bars or simple restaurants, as well as lakeside or inland pools. There's a day-use fee that usually includes lockers and changing facilities.

Ride a Bike Around the Lake

Dozens of biking trails starting in Zurich explore the towns and natural areas on both sides of the lake. Trails may offer easy riding along the level lakefront, or lung-busting climbs which are rewarded by stupendous lake and mountain views. Zurich Tourism offers suggestions for short jaunts and longer trips, as well as information on bike and e-bike rentals.

Rent a Boat

Setting out on your own is a carefree and adventurous way to see the lake. The Lago boathouse rents small motorboats for which no boating license is required, as well as non-motorized boats like pedalos. If you want to let someone else do the navigating, they also offer charter services on skippered sailboats.

Visit the Monastery Island of Ufenau

From April to November, Lake Zurich Navigation Company runs boats to the monastery island of Ufenau, site of the 12th-century St. Peter and Paul Church and St. Martin's Chapel. The island is a nature reserve and no swimming is allowed, but it's a pleasant place to spend a half-day or so. There's also a cozy restaurant on the island.

Warm up in a Sauna

Courtesy of Seebad Enge

When temperatures cool off, that doesn't mean fun on Lake Zurich has to end. At the Enge swimming area on the western shore of the lake, a wintertime sauna opens up allowing guests to work up a sweat indoors while gazing through windows out onto the lake. The brave can even take a quick dip in the frigid lake waters—allegedly good for blood pressure and circulation after a sauna session. There's a women's only sauna and a mixed sauna—all are for adults only.

Ice Skate With a View

The cold weather need not stop you from enjoying lake views. While ice skating rinks pop up all over Zurich in the wintertime, only a couple of them are right on Lake Zurich. The open-air rink at the Romantik Seehotel Sonne offers day and evening skating, skate rentals, and a snack bar from November to January. Set close to the opera house, the Wienachtsdorf Christmas market is open in November and December and has a skating rink near the lakeside promenade.

Get Out of Town on a Day Trip

A Visitor’s Guide to Stunning Lake Zurich, Switzerland

We’re reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Aside from the splendor of the Alps, Lake Zurich is one of the most popular destinations in Switzerland. And it’s no wonder because this gorgeous lake is framed by a beautiful collection of hills and offers prime water activities from spring to summer.

At its western shore, you’ll find Zurich, which is Switzerland’s largest city–and the country’s chocolate capital, we might add. And along the northern-east bank, you’ll find the chic “Golden Coast,” which is incredibly popular in summer and features a rich collection of high-profile homes.

There is so much to do and see around this gorgeous lake, so we’ve broken it down for you in this Lake Zurich Switzerland travel guide !

What is Lake Zurich Like?

Lake Zurich is one of the “Big Five” lakes in Switzerland , meaning it’s one of the country’s biggest lakes! It’s shaped like a banana and framed by lovely hills on both sides.

It has four tiny islands you can reach by boat ride and has many activities to enjoy year-round. Some small streams from the lake also pass through the town of Zurich, forming what’s called the Limmat River.

lake zurich overlooking the city

The people here speak Swiss German and are known to be very friendly, and the cities have a wide variety of architecture, from the Mediterranean to medieval town vibes.

The area is costly during summer and winter, due to the increase in tourist traffic. Many people flock to Lake Zurich in the winter as a hopping-off point to go skiing in the Swiss Alps, while others come in the summer to enjoy all the outdoor activities at the lake. Sometimes, that just can’t be avoided, but we recommend planning your visit during spring and fall to skip the crowds and make the trip more budget-friendly.

Where is Lake Zurich, Switzerland

Lake Zurich is located to the southeast of Zurich, Switzerland. It’s about an hour west of Lichtenstein and just 95 minutes north of the Swiss Alps. You can easily reach it from the Zurich Airport via train, bus, or car.

How to Get Around Lake Zurich

The best way to get around Lake Zurich is by using public transportation, as traffic and parking can be pretty difficult—and expensive! The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) connects most of Switzerland and stops at Zurich HB, the central train station in Zurich. You can take a local train or bus to your final destination from there.

zurich public transportation

If you plan on staying in one place during your trip, we recommend getting a Zurich Card. This card gives you free use of public transportation in the city, as well as free or discounted admission to many of the city’s top attractions. You can purchase a 24-, 48-, or 72-hour card.

If you’re renting a car, remember that parking is very limited in the city and can be expensive. We recommend using public transportation or your feet whenever possible!

Best Things to Do at Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich and the surrounding area are teeming with fun activities to explore during all times of the year. Here are some of our favorites way to experience Lake Zurich to the fullest!

Swimming and Sunbathing on the lakeshore

One of Lake Zurich’s most popular warm-weather activities is having a beach day! With temperatures averaging in the mid to high 70s during the summer, it’s never too cold or hot to chill out on the shores or dive into the waters.

You’ll find many places to go, but some of the most popular spots include Wollishofen, Mythenquai, and Enge.

Explore the Lake Zurich Islands

Lake Zurich has four small islands that are all worth a stop. Take a boat ride to Ufenau Island to see the medieval Einsiedeln Abbey, the foundations of a Roman temple, and the surrounding nature reserve. Or, head over to Lützelau Island for more nature, a campground, and a restaurant that serves the local specialty, Fischknusperli. Saffa Island is also fairly popular because it can be reached on foot via a short bridge that connects it to the mainland.

Take a Tour with The Lake Zurich Navigation Company

Want to see the lake in a leisurely manner? Book a boat ride with the Lake Zurich Navigation Company ! They have everything from shuttle boats that cross Lake Zurich from end to end to leisurely cruises that feature a variety of culinary themes!

If sightseeing is your primary goal, you’ll likely want to book one of their standard lake cruises, which allows you to hop on and off the boat at any of the included ports! Or, take one of their shorter (2-hour) cruises and enjoy a loop around some of Lake Zurich’s highlights.

Try some local water sports

You’ll find no shortage of water sports at Lake Zurich or Limmat River! Local tours offer everything from wakeboarding, wake surfing, and water skiing, to kayaking, SUP, and sailing.

Alternatively, if you have a boating license, you can rent a boat and explore Lake Zurich at your leisure or enjoy some water activities like tubing and water skiing on your own.

Go hiking on Uetliberg Mountain

No matter the season, visiting the local mountain is a great idea! Uetliberg overlooks Zurich, providing panoramic views of the city, Zurich Lake, and the Swiss Alps in the distance! You’ll find plenty of hiking trails in the warmer months, plus a mountain bike trail. In the winter, the trails are turned into sled runs, so you can still enjoy the area!

Walk the Lakeside Promenade

Don’t miss a relaxing stroll around the lakeside promenade at any time of year! This public park area provides visitors and locals alike with incredible views of the lake plus shopping and recreational activities. Plus, it’s free to enjoy, which is always a bonus.

We weren’t kidding when we said that Lake Zurich was the chocolate capital of Switzerland (which is pretty much the world’s chocolate capital, right?). If you’re interested in a Swiss chocolate tour, head over to Kilchberg on the western shore to visit Lindt Home of Chocolate.

Visitors can tour the factory shop and museum for an interactive tour on the cultural heritage of Swiss chocolate. It also includes stops at the world’s biggest Lindt Chocolate shop, where you can buy as much chocolate as your heart desires, and a nine-meter-tall chocolate fountain!

Take a day trip to the Alps

You can’t get that close to the Swiss Alps and not take a visit! Rent a car or take a day tour to explore their beautiful scenery in any season. Check out our article on the best day trips from Zurich to get inspired about other day excursions.

Make a Splash at Alpamare

You don’t need a sunny day to enjoy the water at Lake Zurich! The largest covered waterpark in Switzerland and Central Europe’s longest waterslide are found at Alpamare in Pfäffikon. The park is decorated with palm trees and a Mayan ruin theme, making it feel like summer even when snow is outside! And since there are both indoor and outdoor sections, there’s no seasonal limit on the fun here.

It has many slides, a whirlpool, a lazy river, a sauna, and a sun terrace for sunbathing in warm weather.

Check out Old Town Zurich

If shopping and dining are high on your list, head over to Altstadt in Zurich. This historic area is full of gorgeous architecture and plenty of activities. Lake Zurich Switzerland: What To See & Do

About lake zurich.

Lake Zurich (known as Zurichsee locally in German) is a picturesque and large natural lake with its larger part located in the Zurich canton of Switzerland, although it stretches further to the southeast beyond Zurich.

Lake Zurich, Switzerland

The entire Lake Zurich which has a shape of a banana belongs to 3 cantons of Switzerland – Zurich in the north-west (which encapsulates most part of the Lower Lake or the downstream part of the lake), and the cantons of St. Gallen  and  Schwyz in the south-east where the Upper Lake (or the upstream part of the lake) belongs. Locally, the Upper Lake is also known as Obersee and the Lower Lake as Untersee.

Lake Zurich is fed by the Linth river which originates from the glaciers of the Alps in the canton of Glarus in the southeast. It flows into a large basin that forms the Upper Lake of Lake Zurich. At Rapperswil (located on the north shore of the lake and near the south-eastern end of Zurich canton), the Lower Lake begins and it continues till Quaibrucke towards the north-west passing through the Zurich City (the biggest city around the entire lake). At Quaibrucke, the lake ends but it then flows out further to the northwest as a river known as Limmat .

Limmat River & Lake Zurich Switzerland

The end-to-end length of Lake Zurich is 40kms and its maximum width is 3kms covering a total area of about 89 square kilometres. The average depth of water is 49meters.

At Rapperswil, there is a causeway and bridge known as Seedamm built on the narrowest section of the lake. The Upper Lake is to the right of Seedamm, while the Lower Lake is to its left (west).

Map of Lake Zurich, Switzerland

The Seedamm is a 1km long partially artificial causeway and a bridge built in the year 1878. It connects Rapperswil city on the north shore of Lake Zurich with Pfaffikon on the south shore. The Seedamm has a road and a railway track. The railway track is used by the S5  and  S40  lines of the  S-Bahn Zurich and also by the SOB railway of Switzerland. There is a swing bridge at the centre of Seedamm which allows small vessels to pass. Other than Seedamm, there is only one other bridge on Lake Zurich and that is at Quaibrucke.

Take A Boat Ride

Undoubtedly the best and the most popular way of experiencing and enjoying the lake is by taking a cruise. There are a number of boat rides available daily from various points around the lake starting from early morning sunrise cruises to sunset sailing, including special cruises complete with breakfast or dinner. And these cruises are usually available year-round. There are also musical cruises and other special boat tours on public holidays.

Lake Zurich Navigation is a public Swiss company and the main operator that operates these boat rides all through the year. They presently have 17 boats out of which two area Paddle Steamers (very popular with tourists) and the remaining are large motorboats including Limmat boats that operate on the Limmat river.

Lake Zurich Cruise, Switzerland

The company operates daily scheduled cruises from Zurich City, Rapperswil and various other places around the lake. Depending on the type of lake cruise (mini, short or long), the duration of a round trip can vary from 55-minutes to more than 3 hours. Most of these regular cruises stop at several points along the shore, so you can get off anywhere you like or complete the entire round trip.

If you are boarding from Zurich, the cruises usually depart from Zurich Burkliplatz. The mini-lake cruises usually go via Wollishofen, Zollikon, Tiefenbrunnen and Zürichorn, and alternately in the opposite direction. The short lake cruises go via Kilchberg (the place for the world-famous chocolate factory), Erlenbach (the historic village with vineyards), Zurihorn where you get to see the “Heureka” sculpture machine that stands on the shore of the lake, and then returns.

The long cruises go up to Rapperswil (18kms one-way) and return. If you take the long cruise, then a great idea would be to get off at Rapperswil and stroll around to enjoy this beautiful and charming old town. You can get back to Zurich City by train (Sbahn).

Lake Cruise ticket prices are reasonable (unless you want to book a special cruise with meals). You can buy tickets at any ZVV (Zurich Public Transport) sales point, at the SBB railway counter or directly on the boat. There are no seat reservations… it’s free seating once you have the ticket. You can find lake cruise schedules, information about offers, special cruises etc from this Lake Zurich Navigation Company Website .

You can also book a privately operated Lake Zurich Cruise online through this Viator Website .

Stroll Around & Visit Places

If you are in Zurich for a few days, you will end up spending substantial time at Lake Zurich because this is a central attraction of the city and the canton as a whole. The lake is so beautiful, clean and its greenish-blue water so attractive that you will keep getting drawn back to the lake.

There are many large and grand mansions, villas as well as historical buildings around the lake. The shores rise through gradual slopes to many orchards and vineyards, and far away you can see the alps to the south… it’s a picturesque setting. There are often many swans on the water.

And there are paved wonderful walkways around the lake. You will find fountains along the way, benches to soak in the view and enjoy the breeze as you watch the gently rocking waves. You will also find many grassy lawns around the lake that are excellent for relaxing or a family picnic.

Lake Zurich Walkway

A section of the northern shore of Lake Zurich is known as the Golden Coast … it stretches from Zollikon to Feldmeilen. This section of the coast is known for low tax rates but very high property prices… no wonder you will see fabulous villas and mansions of the rich and the famous here. Switzerland is the world’s most expensive country, but the residents here live lavishly beating all cost barriers in the world.

If you are in Rapperswil , take a stroll along the lake-side promenade and enjoy its Mediterranean charms with lovely views of the lake. Walk down to the public gardens that house over 15,000 rose bushes with more than 600 varieties of roses… no wonder Rapperswil is known as the ‘Rose Town’. Stroll around this Old Town, enjoy its enchanting charm and see the imposing Rapperswil Castle that was built in the early 13th Century.

Another great place of interest particularly for children is Knie’s Children’s Zoo at Rapperswil. One can really get close to some of the animals here. Depending on the species, one can touch, feed, pet or even ride an animal. There are more than 350 animals of 41 species including elephants, horses, leopards,  Giraffe,  many small animals as well as penguins and flamingos. Elephant rides are offered. #1 – Old Town – A great place to see in Zurich if you love architecture

Old Town

  • Home to several important churches
  • Nostalgic and olde-worlde air
  • Cultural experiences
  • Lively night scene

Why it’s awesome: Straddling both sides of the Limmat River, Zurich’s Old Town provides a fascinating peek back in time. Charming medieval streets wind through the area, lined with quaint buildings and historic monuments. There are delightful squares dotted through the Old Town, many of which have ornate water fountains where visitors can refill their water bottles for free. Awash with culture and heritage, Zurich’s Old Town also offers exceptional shopping and dining opportunities. Not just a top place to visit in Zurich during the daytime, the Old Town also boasts a vibrant nightlife.

What to do there: Lose yourself in the atmospheric streets and admire the gorgeous buildings. Wander along Limmatquai and see the stunning old Renaissance-era guild houses from yesteryear, with those built for various merchants, carpenters, and more. Marvel at the imposing Grossmünster, which was built between the 11th and 13th centuries and whose two towers are among the most iconic symbols of Zurich. Step inside the magnificent place of worship to see spectacular carvings and stained glass, descend into the Crypt and visit the Reformation museum.

Visit another of the famous landmarks in Zurich in the Old Town: Fraumünster Church. #5 – Moulagenmuseum – One of the more unique places to visit in Zurich!

Moulagenmuseum

  • Quirky and offbeat attraction
  • Medical research and education facility
  • Discover more about diseases
  • Free admission

Why it’s awesome: Zurich’s Moulagenmuseum is a wax museum with a twist—almost certainly unlike any other wax museum you’ve visited before, it contains wax models of diseases! Moulages were once a vital part of medical learning and understanding, important tools to help practitioners recognise different diseases before the advent of plastic moulds and colour photographs. The collection of grotesque models in Zurich is among the biggest such collections in the world.

The museum was established in 1916 and houses almost 2,000 realistic wax models, of which more than 500 are on public display. Although members of the general public can visit the museum, it is also still a centre of learning for Swiss medical students. There is no admission fee to see the horrifying and morbidly fascinating collection.

What to do there: Take a deep breath and brace yourself to confront some of the world’s most horrendous diseases in life-like form. Ogle the curious collection of wax representations, created based on real afflictions and symptoms. The 3D models have the same colouring, size, and texture of the real deal, with some that have even had strands of hair added to make them even more realistic.

If you’ve ever wondered what syphilis, leprosy, hives, herpes, cancer, dermatitis, and other conditions actually look like, this is your chance to find out! Visiting the Moulagenmuseum is definitely one of the most unusual things to do in Zurich. Warning: it’s not for the queasy or faint of heart!

  • Activities and Interests
  • Architecture
  • Destinations
  • History and Culture
  • Outdoor Activities
  • Religious Sites
  • Sightseeing
  • Switzerland

As the largest city in Switzerland, Zurich is rich in history, architecture, natural beauty, and just about everything else (after all, it’s also the country’s financial capital). It has world-class museums and art galleries, convenient access to two breathtaking bodies of water in Lake Zurich and the Limmat River, and numerous Michelin-starred restaurants.

For travelers, the issue isn’t deciding whether or not to visit Zurich — it’s deciding what to do when you get there. The gorgeous places on this list will give you a head start.

1. Old Town

Walk down the busy streets of Zurich’s Old Town , and you’ll feel like you’re taking a tour of the city’s history. The area is full of restaurants and features a world-famous shopping mile with medieval houses and Renaissance town halls set along narrow cobblestone streets.

Some of the city’s most famous churches and buildings can be found here, including Grossmunster and Peterskirche , which features the largest clockface in Europe. The streets of the Old Town are split by the beautiful Limmat River, so as you stroll through the area, you’ll have a perfect view of the city. Consider booking a guided tour, which will help you understand the historical significance of the Old Town’s many landmarks.

2. Lake Zurich

After you’ve finished exploring the Old Town, follow the Limmat River to Lake Zurich. Once a major transit avenue, the lake is now a serene destination that’s perfect for boating, swimming, or a shoreline picnic.

Take a quick boat ride to get the full experience of the lake and its surrounding environment — there are regularly scheduled boat tours and cruises to choose from — or hike the Lake Zurich Trail for an up-close-and-personal experience. The trail follows the east side of the lake and passes near a large playground, so if you’re traveling with children, it offers a great opportunity to get some light exercise.

Fraumunster in Zurich, Switzerland.

3. Fraumunster

This ninth-century church is one of the most-visited landmarks in Zurich. With its unmistakable green steeple, you can’t miss this gorgeous building set along the west bank of the Limmat. Fraumunster literally means “women’s church,” and the structure was originally used as a convent for European women of the aristocracy.

Now visitors flock to this stunning house of worship to view its impressive stained glass windows (created by artists Augusto Giacometti and Marc Chagall) and the enormous organ with its 5,793 pipes.

Uetliberg in Zurich, Switzerland.

4. Uetliberg

Zurich’s own “mountain,” Uetliberg , boasts some of the absolute best views of the city, Lake Zurich, and even the neighboring Alps. While Uetliberg is more of a hill than an actual mountain, the peak, Uto Kulm , sits 2,850 feet above sea level, and the hike up is fairly easy.

During the summer months, this peak offers clear panoramic views of the surrounding area. While hiking in the fall, you’ll experience a vantage point above the blanket of fog that often hovers over the city.

5. Thermal Baths & Spa

At the Zurich Thermal Baths & Spa , you can pamper yourself while also enjoying a beautiful rooftop view of the city. This brewery-turned-spa offers a variety of soaking experiences within century-old stone vaulted rooms.

Choose from an assortment of water treatments featuring fresh thermal water from Zurich’s Aqui spring. The main attraction is a year-round open-air bath that allows you to soak on the rooftop.

6. Grossmunster

The Great Church was built in the early 12th century, and during the 16th century it played a major role in the Swiss-German Reformation led by Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger. If you’re interested in the history of the Protestant Reformation, this is a must-visit location.

Though the church was stripped of most of its elaborate ornamentation during the Reformation, there are still notable stained glass windows, a Romanesque crypt, and Romanesque capitals to check out. Grossmunster also has two beautiful neo-Gothic towers that were completed in the late 18th century; they are some of the most prominent features of the church.

Lindenhof park in Zurich's Old Town.

7. Lindenhof

In the heart of the city sits a park oasis. The Lindenhof town square has a rich history: It was the site of historical battles as far back as ancient Roman times. Speaking of Romans, Lindenhof in Zurich’s Old Town was once home to a Roman castle.

Today, Lindenhof is making up for that history of violence. The beautiful pedestrian-only park is full of lime trees and quite peaceful. Lindenhof also offers an amazing vantage point with incredible views of the city and the Limmat; no barbarian invasions guaranteed.

Any visit to Zurich is bound to be a memorable event. But if you can make it to all seven of these attractions, your trip to Zurich will be one for the history books.

You will find the best viewpoints below if you want to see Lake Zurich in all its glory, the Old Town, famous churches, and more.

Table of Contents

Grossmünster

View over the Limmat River from the Grossmunster Tower

One of the best views in Zurich can be found in the heart of the Old Town on the banks of the Limmat River at Grossmünster Church .

Grossmünster Church is a stunning Romanesque Cathedral that dates back to the 12th century and is a gorgeous building. So much so that it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Zurich.

View of the second tower, Grossmuster Zurich

Make sure to see the notable stained glass windows, the stunning towers, and the wonderful interior. Historically, this Grossmünster Church was a Catholic place of worship but was converted to a Protestant church during the Reformation.

But what about the beautiful views? On a clear day, you can climb the 187 steps to the top of one of the towers of this great church for a perfect view of the city, Lake Zurich, and even the neighboring Alps. It costs 5 CHF to enter and you can grab a ticket in the back corner before you go up.

It’s a bit tight as you ascend the spiral staircase, but it soon opens into a wooden structure with lots of space. The viewing area is closed for safety, but you can get your camera up to the grate and still get epic shots.

View from Grossmunster's tower window

You can look down onto the Limmat River, the narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Town, the Fraumunster, St. Peterskirche Clock, and the city’s rooftops.

The restaurant serves fine European dishes while the bar is all about signature cocktails specializing in gin, and there is a bistro for a few light snacks.

From Lindenhof, you get beautiful views of the medieval houses, the old town, the west bank of the Limmat River, Grossmünster Church, and City Hall, too!

It is said that all paths lead to Lindenhof from the Old Town, making it a famous historical meeting point. It is a relaxing place, soaking in the views while sitting on benches under lovely trees.

Uetliberg mountain in Zurich

Mount Uetliberg is known as Zurich’s little mountain and certainly offers one of the best views in Zurich. Sitting outside of the city to the west, Mount Uetliberg is easy to get to, and it offers some stunning hiking trails, too, if you want to escape the busy streets for a day.

From the top of Mount Uetliberg, you can look back onto Lake Zurich and see clear panoramic views of the city and the Alps, too.

You can hike up to the peak of Mount Uetliberg from Zurich if you are up for a challenge. It takes about 2 hours to get up there, and there are more hiking trails to discover on the peak, too.

If a long hike isn’t quite what you are looking for, you can take the S10 train from Zurich HB station, directly to the top of the mountain. Once you have taken in the beautiful views, you can hike back down the mountain, eat and drink at the mountain-top restaurant, and lots more.

Uetliberg and the chain or hills along Lake Zurich are great places to hike near Zurich on a weekend or later summer’s evening.

Polyterrasse is an observation deck that is a part of Zurich University, but you don’t have to be a student to see some of the best views in Zurich as it is open to the public.

From Polyterrasse, you can see panoramic views of Zurich, historical buildings, and the mountains beyond. One of the key landmarks to spot is the town of the famous Fraumünster Church.

Loorenkopf tower.

Loorenkopf Tower Platform

The Loorenkopf Tower offers some of the best views in Zurich without question, but it is not in the city. You must go on a little hike into the hills to experience this view.

The Loorenkopf Tower is located east of the city on the Adlisberg mountain. It is a wooden tower in the middle of a forest that towers above the canopy and provides panoramic views of the city, Lake Zurich, and the hills and mountains beyond it.

Getting to the Loorenkopf Tower is an awesome experience in itself, and you should reserve it for a day when you want a break from the busy city and want to get back into nature.

You can hike directly from Old Town Zurich, and following Google Maps, you will be at the Loorenkopf Tower in just over an hour. The hike is lovely, taking you through the forests and hills. You can also rent a bike and ride there following the biking trails.

It is worth the effort as you get one of the absolute best views of Zurich and the surrounding countryside. Be sure to choose a clear day and why not take a picnic.

Zurich Thermal Baths & Spa

Hürlimann Thermal Bath & Spa Zurich

Zurich Thermal Baths & Spa is located on the western side of Zurich and has one of the best views in Zurich. Imagine soaking in a spa with breathtaking views of the city, Lake Zurich, and more.

The Zurich Thermal Baths & Spa is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering a rejuvenating spa experience and a view. You can book everything from saunas to hot tubs, massages, thermal baths, and more.

For a panoramic view, head to the top floor of the building, where you will find a heated outdoor pool. Enjoy panoramic views in every direction while swimming, relaxing, and soaking in the warm waters on the roof.

Talk about combining a traditional Swiss experience with spectacular views, but that is what the Swiss are all about.

You can find the Zurich Thermal Baths & Spa at 150 Brandschenkestrasse. It is easy to get to, just a 20-minute walk from the Old Town, or hop on a bus or the metro.

There is nothing like taking a stroll through a city and enjoying a new beautiful view of the city with almost every step you take. That is what the street of Limmatquai offers you in Zurich, as it follows the eastern bank of the Limmat River through the Old Town.

Limmatquai is known as one of the most beautiful streets in Zurich, and as you walk along this 1 km stretch, you will see a ton of the most iconic landmarks in the city.

The old buildings, Grossmünster, Fraumünster Church, Rathaus, and Münster Bridge are all notable sites you can see along the way.

At the end of Limmatquai, you will find yourself at Lake Zurich and it is the ending that has the best view for me. As you stand on the shores of Lake Zurich and gaze across it, you realize the magnitude of the nature surrounding you.

Beautiful Lakes around Zurich

Switzerland is often called a water castle because it has around 7,000 lakes. Besides the lakes, there are rivers and streams, with water going to different parts of Europe and ending in the seas. Many pretty lakes are found in Switzerland.

If you’re visiting Zurich , you may be curious if there’s a lake nearby the city.

The straightforward answer is definitely yes: Zurich is situated at one end of a large lake in Switzerland, which shares its name with the city, Lake Zurich. Additionally, there are several smaller lakes in the vicinity of Zurich.

In this article, we will talk about the most beautiful lakes close to Zurich you can see. These are nice lakes you can go to for a day trip if you’re staying in Zurich.

Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich, (Zürichsee or Zürisee as the locals call it), is one of the largest lakes in Switzerland, and it’s surrounded by stunning views and activities that will keep you busy no matter what time of year you visit.

You can walk to it from the main train station in Zurich. It is part of the three cantons Zurich, Schwyz, and St. Gallen. It has little islands like Ufenau and Lüztelau. There are two parts that stick out into the lake called Hurden and Au. You can take a ferry from Meilen to Horgen and back, joining the two sides of the lake. There’s also a road and bridge that goes over the narrowest part of the lake, between Hurden and Rapperswil. A train goes over this bridge too.

You can do lots of fun things on the lake, like boating, stand-up paddling, swimming, riding pedal boats, and more. There are many places to swim along the lake’s edge between Zurich and Hurden, like Kilchberg, Richterswil, and Horgen.

Ufenau Island on Lake Zurich

Whether you’re looking to enjoy an elegant meal with great views or you want to explore the region’s winding roads, Lake Zurich has something to offer everyone.

Lake Zug is the largest of the lakes, in the vicinity of Zurich. To reach it, get off the train at Cham or Zug from where you’ll find the lake easely. A short 15-minute walk from Cham takes you to Strandbad Hünenberg, where you can find a diving board, a place to play beach volleyball, rent stand-up paddleboards, and eat at a restaurant. In Zug, you should try the old Strandbad Seeliken with its fancy bistro. It’s free to get in, there’s a lifeguard, and it’s a great spot to watch beautiful sunsets.

Lake Hallwil

Lake Hallwil has multiple access points you can go to, but the most popular ones are Strandbad Seerose and Arbeiterstrand Tennwil. Both spots are on the lake’s east side, and you can see sunsets from there. I like the “worker’s beach” in Tennwil because there are lots of trees for shade and a big wooden bench that goes into the lake. There’s also a self-serve restaurant and a place to camp.

People who live nearby like to walk, bike, or rollerblade around Lake Greifensee. To swim or do stand-up paddleboarding, there are some spots you can go to in Greifensee, Fällanden, Maur, Egg, and Niederuster. There’s a public swimming area in Niederuster with a big pool, easy access to the lake, a diving board, and a restaurant.

Lakes to visit from Zurich on a Daytrip

Lake lucerne (vierwaldstättersee).

Lake Lucerne is one of the most famous lakes in the country, with pretty mountains all around. It’s the fifth-biggest lake in Switzerland. Five cantons, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Schwyz, and Uri, share it. Lake Lucerne is about 53.9 kilometers from Zurich. If you drive, it will take you less than an hour to get to this lovely lake.

The lake has different parts: Lucerne, Küssnacht, and Alpnach. It also has some smaller areas – Stansstaad, Weggis, Buochs, Gersau, and Uri. The many parts and small areas make the view of the land very exciting and always changing.

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

Lake Constance (Bodensee) is a long lake, 63 kilometers, shared by Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It’s very big, covering 540 square kilometers. The lake is about 124 kilometers from Zurich. It takes about 90 minutes to drive there from Zurich.

Altnau steg at Lake Constance

Lake Constance is the third-biggest lake in Europe that’s not by the sea. It has three parts that connect – Untersee, Obersee, and Überlinger See. There are also three islands – Reichenau, Lindau, and Mainau. You can do lots of things at Lake Constance. It’s the second-biggest lake in the country, after Lake Geneva, and covers 473 square kilometers.

Some nice towns to see at Lake Constance are Arbon, Steckborn, Kreuzlingen, Romanshorn, Rohrschach. Arbon is a special old city with a port, an old part of town, and a castle, as well as a swimming pool.

Lake Walen (Walensee)

Lake Walen, or Walensee in German, is in the vacation area called Heidiland. It’s a pretty lake close to Zurich, about 70 kilometers away. Two-thirds of the lake is in St. Gallen area, and one-third is in Glarus area. There are lovely towns by the lake. We like Weesen the most, but Quinten and Quarten are nice too. You can see the Churfirsten mountains from the lake, and many people going to the Graubünden area pass this lake on the road or by train.

Walensee lake a daytrip destination from zurich

There are also pretty trails and paths to walk around, and it feels relaxed and a bit like the Mediterranean, especially in Weesen. On a nice day, you can eat lunch at a restaurant with a terrace and enjoy the great view. It’s a peaceful day trip from Zurich, not as crowded as Rapperswil or Bellevue in Zurich. As you can guess from its name Heidiland, this is where Johanna Spyri was inspired to write her book Heidi.

Lake Cauma (Caumasee)

Lake Cauma (Lag la Cauma in Romansh, Caumasee in German) is a beautiful lake in Flims, Graubünden. It might be one of the prettiest lakes in the country. The water is a special blue-green color. Sometimes it looks light blue or light green. It’s a great place to visit and close to Zurich! Lake Cauma is about 140 kilometers from Zurich. Driving there takes around an hour and 37 minutes.

You need to buy a ticket to go inside. On bright, warm, sunny days, there can be a long line to get in. But once you’re in, you can swim, paddle, and play (they have a fun playground for kids). There’s also a restaurant to eat at, and you can watch fish swimming in the clear water. It’s fun to watch the fish swim. If Lake Cauma is too crowded, you can try Crestasee (Lag la Cresta) instead. It’s close by and usually not as busy as Lake Cauma.

Lake Brienz (Brienzersee)

Another pretty lake close to Zurich is Lake Brienz. It’s closer to Zurich than Lake Thun. It takes about 1 hour and 39 minutes to get there from the city, a total of 111 kilometers. Lake Brienz has blue-green water and is just north of the big mountains called the Alps. It’s in the area called Canton Bern. The beautiful lake gets its water from the Aare river and the Giessbach stream.

You should also visit the village of Brienz. It’s at the bottom of the Brienzer Rothorn mountain and close to the Giessbach Waterfalls.

Another pretty lake is Lake Thun, about 140 kilometers away. If you drive, it takes around 1 hour and 44 minutes.

Lake Thun is a big mountain lake that’s 17.5 kilometers long and 3.5 kilometers wide. From April to October, passenger boats go around both Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. In the summer, the special Steam Boat Blümlisalp goes from Thun to Interlaken and back once a day. The trip takes 90 minutes and has amazing views of Hilterfingen, Hünegg Park with Castle Hünegg Hilterfingen, Oberhofen and its castle, and Gunten with its great panorama and clear waters.

Castle in Oberhofen at Lake Thun

All around the lake, you can see beautiful views of meadows, mountains, and castles. If you want to stop in a town by the lake, there are many choices. Stops include Hünibach, Hilterfingen, Oberhofen am Thunersee, Gunten, Spiez, Beatenbucht (St. Beatus Caves), and Interlaken West.
