If you’re not sure  where Niagara Falls is located , it’s within the course of the Niagara River, specifically between the province of Ontario, Canada, and New York State. From the United States, the closest city to Niagara Falls is Buffalo, NY, about 20 miles away. To go to Niagara Falls from New York City , you will have to travel about 400 miles, which is about a 7-hour drive. But it’s completely worth it since it’s one of the best things to do in New York State .

Most people who take a  trip to Niagara Falls, Canada  do so from Toronto, which is a little over 90 miles away. That said, the cities of Hamilton and Mississauga are a bit closer, so they’re two other options .

Which side of Niagara Falls is better? – American side vs. Canadian side

If you’re short on time and can only visit one side of the falls, don’t worry. There are plenty of  things to do in Niagara Falls  on both the American and Canadian sides.

There is a huge push for  tourism in Niagara Falls , so below I’m including the highlights for each side. Just remember to bring your passport and/or visa to cross the border.

Niagara Falls Canadian side

If you’re interested in sightseeing, a  Niagara Falls tour of the Canadian side  is your best choice. Not only are most of the tourist attractions there, but the views of the falls are better.

There are many  unique things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada , which is why many tourists say it resembles an amusement park. The mix of entertainment venues and leisurely outdoor spaces is a hit with visitors.

In Ontario, you can stand directly in front of the falls, and there are several hotels and casinos nearby. While these large accommodations are a bit imposing on the natural environment, the waterfalls provide a great backdrop while you’re staying overnight.

Niagara Falls U.S. side

For those who want more outdoor recreation and nature activities, a trip to  Niagara Falls, USA  won’t disappoint.

While the views of the falls aren’t as spectacular on the American side, there are still plenty of things to do around this beautiful natural environment.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada

To make the most of our trip, we booked   this tour , which includes a heli-tour, Voyage to the Falls boat ride, a meal at Skylon Tower, and a few other activities. It was the best way to see the falls as a first-time visitor, so I highly recommend it.

A  Niagara Falls boat tour  is one of the best ways to see the majesty of the falls. If you’re on the Canadian side, Voyage to the Falls is the best attraction, and you can get your ticket  here .

This tour gets you as close to the Horseshoe Falls as possible, giving you a one-of-a-kind view of the rushing waters. The boat goes through the Niagara Gorge and passes the American and Bridal Veil Falls before inching closer to the Horseshoe Falls.

The ride will leave you speechless, and you can either stay inside the cabin or put on a poncho and go out to the deck. If you’re interested in Voyage to the Falls and other attractions on the Canadian side, I recommend booking the  full-day tour  I mentioned earlier.

Journey Behind the Falls, the best way to get close to Niagara Falls

Journey Behind the Falls  is one of the top Niagara Falls tourist attractions. As the name suggests, it takes you just behind the Horseshoe Falls, offering one of the  best ways to see Niagara Fall s up close.

You’ll enter at the Table Rock Center next to the falls, then take an elevator 130 feet down to the underground tunnels. This is one of the most striking experiences that you can’t replicate anywhere else, so be sure to  book your ticket  in advance.

While you’re on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, be sure to visit Skylon Tower .

This  Niagara Falls observation tower  is nearly 520 feet tall, so it offers the best panoramic perspective of the waterfalls. Even the elevators, locally known as “Yellow bugs,” are fully paned in glass so you get stellar views.

If you are going to visit the Skylon tower you have two options:  reserve your ticket  to the 360° viewpoint, or dine at the Tower’s Revolving Dining Room or Summit Suite Buffet. Both restaurants have a great menu; we ate at the buffet and would go again, for sure.

We had dinner as part of this  combo tour , which also included the Hornblower cruise, Journey Behind the Falls, and a helicopter ride.

Zipline to the Falls, a fun thing to do at Niagara Falls

Soaring over the water on a zipline is one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , and an experience you won’t ever forget.

The Niagara Falls zipline travels almost 2,200 feet across the Niagara Gorge to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. While it can seem terrifying and not the best for people who suffer from vertigo, it’s completely safe and even has an automatic braking system.

You can take photos from the observation platform and even fly down the zipline at the same time as your friends. Just be sure to  book in advance  so you’re sure you can experience this activity when you visit!

Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour, the best way to visit Niagara Falls

For another aerial perspective, consider a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour .  This 12-minute flight  soars over the Niagara Whirlpool and the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the Canadian and American sides. You’ll also be able to see Queen Victoria Park, Skylon Tower, and all of Toronto from a birds-eye view.

A helicopter ride is one of the top activities that I recommend, and you can also embark on this adventure  from the American side . Personally, we went with the  combo tour  that also included a boat ride and dinner at Skylon Tower.

Enjoy the views from the Niagara SkyWheel

A trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario is not complete without a ride on the  SkyWheel . At nearly 165 feet tall, it’s the largest observation wheel in Canada. It’s in the nearby entertainment district of Clifton Hill and boasts amazing views of the falls and beyond.

A ride on the Skywheel lasts about 10 minutes, and the cabins are fully enclosed and climate-controlled, so you can ride comfortably all year round. If you’re wondering  where to view Niagara Falls at night , the Skywheel is the top choice.

It’s also a popular place to see the famous Niagara Falls fireworks, so I recommend  booking a ticket  in advance, especially if you want to ride at a specific date or time.

Things to do in Niagara Falls, NY

Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls

One of my to p Niagara Falls tips  is to get off the beaten path and check out  Terrapin Point Lookout on Goat Island . Since the lookout is on the western end of the island, you’ll get awesome views of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and Niagara Gorge.

Goat Island is on the Niagara River, so you have to cross a bridge to get there. While you’re there, spend some time on the walking trails or check out the Cave of the Winds, another popular place for  tourism in Niagara Falls , which I’ll mention later.

Maid of the Mist, the official Niagara Falls boat tour on the American side

One of the best ways to experience  Niagara Falls, USA  is by taking a boat tour. The American tour is called the  Maid of the Mist  boat ride and is one of the most popular attractions on this side of the falls.

You’ll travel along the Niagara Gorge and make your way out into the Canadian waters briefly to get a spectacular view of the waterfalls before returning to the  Niagara Falls U.S. side .

The boats depart every 15 minutes, and the trip takes about 20 minutes. I suggest reserving a spot in advance or booking  this tour , which also includes access to the Cave of the Winds.

Cave of the Winds, the best thing to do on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

The  Cave of the Winds  is another popular  Niagara Falls U.S. attraction . It’s a series of platforms that lead to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls, behind which you can see a natural cave that was discovered in the 1830s.

As you traverse the wooden bridges and stairs, you’ll make your way across the Niagara Gorge. Wear shoes with good traction and keep your poncho handy because you will get wet. The conditions as you approach the falls are similar to those of a hurricane, and the observation platform is aptly named Hurricane Deck.

Before descending 165 feet to the wet and windy platforms, you can explore The World Changed Here Pavilion, a multimedia exhibition that explains the history of Niagara Falls. We enjoyed this attraction and did it as part of this  half-day tour .

American Falls, one of the best places to visit in Niagara Falls

While the Horseshoe Falls in Canada are the most famous, the Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls are also very beautiful.

The  American Falls  are nearly 100 feet tall and are quite an impressive sight from the  U.S. side of Niagara Falls . The best place to see them is from the Prospect Point viewing area. You should also check out the view from Luna Island since it’s between the American and Bridal Veil Falls. The island isn’t that big or crowded, so it’s a unique place to see the U.S. waterfalls.

Old Fort Niagara, a must-see on Niagara Falls’ U.S. side

Old Fort Niagara  is another interesting place to visit on the U.S. side. It’s located in Youngstown, where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. It’s about a 20-minute drive to get there, or you could book  this tour , which includes an optional Maid of the Mist ride.

The fort is a colonial fortification built by the French Empire in 1726. Along with the historic building, there is also a visitor center that functions as a museum. Everything is contained within Fort Niagara State Park, which supports  tourism in Niagara Falls . If you’re looking for some more natural sightseeing, this area is great, as there are several nearby hiking trails.

The best time to visit Niagara Falls

You might be wondering  when the best time is to go to Niagara Falls , but the truth is that this place is beautiful any time of the year. Depending on what you want to do and which attractions you want to see, one season may be better than another.

For example, all the tourist attractions are open in the summer, but it’s also the most crowded time to visit and it can get pretty hot. You’ll have to book your accommodation and tour tickets months in advance, and even then, it’ll be quite expensive.

If you decide to visit in the spring, you’ll be able to see some of the tourist attractions as well as get a cheaper price for a hotel. While it’s less crowded this time of year, the weather is unpredictable. We visited in May and were lucky, but you never know.

Fall is the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  if you’re more interested in the natural surroundings. The autumn colors and foliage are gorgeous, the weather is nice, and there aren’t many tourists.

Finally, you might not think that a winter trip to Niagara Falls is a good idea since most of the attractions are closed. However, when it’s cold and the falls freeze over, it makes for one of the most extraordinary sights, and it’s something we hope to see for ourselves soon!

How to get to Niagara Falls – parking at Niagara Falls

If you’re not sure  how to visit Niagara Falls , the easiest way is by car. Most people who  travel to Niagara Falls  in Canada arrive from Toronto, which is about 90 miles away. That said, the cities of Hamilton and Mississauga are closer, so those are two other options.

If you’re wondering  how far Niagara Falls is from New York City , it’s about a 7-hour drive. Those who visit the American side usually come from Buffalo , which is just 20 miles away from the falls. That isn’t to say that you can’t take advantage of a trip to NYC by also visiting Niagara Falls. Just be aware that it’s a very long drive and it may be better to book a tour. We’ll list some options below.

You can get a rental car for your trip or go in your own vehicle, but you’ll run into the problem that parking isn’t free at Niagara Falls. On both the American and Canadian sides, you must pay for parking, unless your accommodation has a free parking lot. Considering this, it might be easier to book a tour that includes transportation or hotel pick-up and drop-off .

If you don’t have your own car or don’t feel like driving, you can get to Niagara Falls from Toronto, New York, and Buffalo by booking a tour that includes transportation. Here are the best options :

Niagara Falls from Toronto

There are two  Niagara Falls tours from Toronto  that I recommend.

If you want to go straight to the falls, I recommend  this tour , which goes to the most iconic attractions like Skylon Tower, Niagara Parkway, and the Niagara Whirlpool. Along with incredible views of the falls, you’ll also get a wine tasting.

Another option is  this night tour  with a boat cruise. In addition to seeing the falls up close, you’ll experience Niagara Falls’ magical evening lighting. The tour also includes a few tourist attractions and a wine tasting, so it’s the perfect choice if you don’t mind returning to Toronto after dark.

Niagara Falls from New York City

There are several great  Niagara Falls tours from New York City , depending on how much time you have.

My first choice is this  one-day bus tour   with admission to the Maid of the Mist and a few other attractions.

For those who have more time, I recommend  this two-day tour . Along with a ride on the Maid of the Mist and other interesting attractions, on your way to Niagara Falls you will stop at Watkins Glen State Park. This package also includes a nighttime viewing of the falls and an overnight stay at a hotel.

Finally, you might be interested in   this three-day tour , which includes a visit to Niagara Falls and several Toronto attractions.

Niagara Falls from Buffalo

Lastly, if you’re looking for a  bus to Niagara Falls from Buffalo , NY,  this  is the best option. Unlike the tours from Toronto and NYC, this booking is for transportation only, so you’re free to visit the falls and attractions that interest you.

I suggest spending at least one night in Niagara Falls so you can enjoy the beautiful lighting and fireworks. Seeing the falls in the evening is a totally different experience that you shouldn’t miss. If you’re looking for  hotels in Niagara Falls , here are the top recommendations.

Hotels in Canada at Niagara Falls

We stayed overnight  at a Niagara Falls hotel in Canada , the  Sheraton on the Falls , and the views from our hotel room were incredible. As this is one of the top accommodations in Niagara Falls, I suggest booking your room in advance.

Sheraton on the Falls

I have to start with the  Sheraton on the Falls  because it really blew us away. The rooms are great and some of them offer spectacular views of the waterfalls. While these particular rooms are a bit more expensive, it was worth it to us to get stunning views from the comfort of our bed.

Also, the hotel is home to the  Fallsview Restaurant , which serves buffet and a la carte meals. The accommodation’s facilities also include shops, a spa, and a Starbucks. Plus, the hotel connects to the  Niagara Casino and Fallsview Indoor Water Park , so on top of a great location, you’ll have all the amenities you want.

We loved staying here and think it’s one of the most beautiful hotels on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview

If you’re looking for luxury, the  Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview  is a perfect choice. The accommodation is just 300 feet from the falls, so it offers a convenient location and unbeatable views.

The hotel also boasts awesome amenities like a breakfast buffet and complimentary drinks and snacks. Besides the hotel rooms, the facilities include a couple of restaurants (TGI Fridays and Keg Steakhouse), a Starbucks, an indoor pool, and a gym.

From the hotel, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the Skylon Observation Tower, so this is one of the best places to stay if you want to be close to the action.

The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls

The  Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls  is aptly named, as it provides wonderful views of the Canadian falls. The hotel has an observation room where you can enjoy incredible views without the crowds.

It’s next to the  Falls Incline Railway , which connects to  Table Rock  and  Journey Behind the Falls . Along with its nice location, this accommodation has rooms with waterfall views, although they cost a bit more.

That said, if you stay here, you can take advantage of some great amenities, such as a living room with a fireplace, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a sauna, and a fitness center. There is also an Applebee’s on the premises.

Tower Hotel at Fallsview

The  Tower Hotel at Fallsview  is another beautiful accommodation in Niagara Falls, Canada. Along with comfortable rooms, the hotel also has a decent restaurant, so it’s quite a bargain for the price.

If you’re not sure  where to go in Niagara Falls, Ontario  for more quiet lodging, this hotel is the best choice. You’ll get the rest you want, and you won’t have to pay too much.

Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites

The  Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites  is another top hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada, that I recommend. It’s centrally located so you’ll have easy access to the area’s attractions and restaurants. Some of the rooms have views of the falls, too.

This hotel also connects to the Fallsview Casino, so it’s a great place to stay if you plan on visiting the casino in the evening.

Hotels in Niagara Falls, NY

We also stayed at a  Niagara Falls hotel  in New York. which was nice because we arrived at night. We spent a restful night in our hotel room and got up early in the morning so we could go straight to the attractions.

Our room was at the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , and although the views weren’t as impressive as the Canadian hotel, if you ask for a room on a high floor, you’ll get beautiful views of the falls. You can even see the Niagara Falls fireworks without leaving your room.

Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino

The   Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is one of the best hotels to stay in while visiting New York’s Niagara Falls. The resort includes a casino, fitness center, sauna, massage services, a hot tub, an indoor pool, a cafeteria, and several restaurants. Our room was beautiful and immaculate. It’s all-around one of the best hotels on the American side of Niagara Falls.

Best of all, it only took us 20 minutes to walk to Terrapin Point, one of the top  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA . If you stay at this hotel, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. While you can’t see the falls directly from the hotel, you’ll get beautiful views. Plus, you can see the nighttime fireworks from your room, which is convenient if you don’t feel like going out!

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for another good hotel to stay at in Niagara Falls, USA, the   Hyatt Place Niagara Falls  is a great option.

This accommodation is located a little closer to Niagara Falls on the U.S. side, which is very convenient. Also, it is next to Old Falls Street, a small entertainment district where you’ll find great good, shopping, shows, and family activities. If you’re not sure  what to do in Niagara Falls, New York , you can always go there.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls, a good hotel in Niagara Falls, USA

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is also close to the Rainbow Bridge, which you can take to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

While the prices are similar, this hotel isn’t as nice as the Seneca Resort, but it’s still a good option if you need a place to stay overnight.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York

The   DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York   is another accommodation that I recommend on the American side of Niagara Falls. While it’s a bit further away than the previous two hotels, the location is still very good.

The rooms come with nice amenities and they’re very spacious. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the Niagara River, while others overlook the city. I suggest requesting a riverside room, as it’s a more pleasant view.

Overall, this is a hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, that you can book without hesitation. It’s comfortable, affordable, and clean.

Sheraton Niagara Falls

The   Sheraton Niagara Falls   is one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, New York, that I recommend if you want to be close to the falls without breaking the bank. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is quite good for the location.

Also, the hotel has a connective corridor to the Seneca Resort, so it’s super easy to go to the casino and enjoy some of the facilities.

Sheraton Niagara Falls, a place to stay in Niagara Falls, USA

The unique thing about the Sheraton hotel is its Reed Beach Club, which has the largest indoor pool in Niagara Falls. So, not only is this a good place to get some rest, but it’s got plenty of amenities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls

The last hotel that I recommend is the  Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls , which is a great option for travelers on a budget.

For an inexpensive hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, the location isn’t bad at all. Plus, it’s the best choice if you’re planning on walking over to the Canadian side of the falls since it’s just five minutes from the bridge.

8 Tips to visit Niagara Falls

If you’ve read this far, you should have all the information you need for a  trip to Niagara Falls . Still, I’m including some final tips here so you can make the most of your visit.

1. Plan to visit both sides of Niagara Falls

Instead of wondering  which side of Niagara Falls is better , plan to visit both the American and Canadian falls.

The easiest way to see both sides is by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. That said, you’re still crossing an international border, so you need the proper documentation, such as a passport,  visa or Electronic System for Travel Authorization . You can check below what type of documentation you need.

If you’re renting a car, check first to see if they allow you to enter another country with the rental vehicle.

2. Book at least two days to visit Niagara Falls

Both sides of the falls are interesting and worth visiting, so make sure you book plenty of time. At least, I recommend spending two days visiting Niagara Falls, and that should give you time to check the most important attractions.

3. Stay in a hotel with a view of Niagara Falls

While there are different  Niagara Falls hotels  on the Canadian and American sides, I highly recommend booking a room with a view of the falls. Fortunately, several hotels offer waterfall views, so try to reserve one on a higher floor.

On the Canadian side, the hotels with the best views are the  Sheraton on the Falls ,  Embassy Suites ,  The Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls ,  Tower Hotel at Fallsview , and  Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel and Suites .

If your  Niagara Falls itinerary  includes an overnight stay on the American side, I recommend the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino . Just be sure to reserve a room on a higher floor so you can fully see the falls.

4. Leave everything that can’t get wet in the car/hotel

There are some areas where it’s impossible not to get wet by the  Niagara waterfalls , even if you wear a poncho. That said, don’t let a bit of splash and spray deter you from getting an impressive view of the falls.

One of the best  travel tips for Niagara Falls  is to leave behind anything that could be damaged by water. Either keep it in the car or your hotel room or seal it in a waterproof bag if you’re keeping it on you.

5. Take the helicopter tour of Niagara Falls

A  helicopter tour of Niagara Falls, NY  is an unforgettable experience and the best way to get a good look at the falls. I recommend  this tour  from the American side. While it’s only a 10-minute flight, every second is mesmerizing and you can get a sense of the falls’ magnitude.

If you’re on the  Canadian side of Niagara Falls , I suggest booking  this tour . The 12-minute flight soars over the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls, and the helicopter is one of the quietest of its kind.

6. Arrive early to find a good spot to watch the Fireworks

The Niagara Falls fireworks are one of the most popular things to see on summer evenings. The show starts every night at 10 pm, although you’ll want to find a spot 30-40 minutes beforehand. If you’re not sure where to view Niagara Falls at night , I suggest the Skywheel (at the Canada side) or Prospect Point (at the American side).

7. Treat yourself to a Niagara Falls buffet dinner

Most Canada  Niagara Falls itineraries  include a visit to Skylon Tower. Besides being a wonderful viewpoint overlooking the falls, the Tower has two excellent restaurants: the Revolving Dining Room and the Summit Suite Buffet.

We ate dinner at the buffet, and we would definitely eat there again. It’s one of the  top things to do at Niagara Falls , so be sure to  book a ticket  to the Tower in advance. Or do what we did and take  this lunch tour  with a helicopter flight and boat cruise.

The Top of the Falls Restaurant is another place where you can eat while enjoying incredible views of the falls. This one is on Goat Island, on the American side.

8. Come back to Niagara Falls in winter

As I mentioned, the  best time to go to Niagara Falls  depends on what you want to do and see here. While the summertime is popular with most tourists, there is something special about visiting in the winter.

There are way fewer tourists, the prices are lower, and the atmosphere is calmer and more peaceful. That said, I don’t recommend a winter trip for your first time in Niagara Falls since most of the attractions are closed.

If you’re still wondering if a  visit to Niagara Falls  is worth it, I would say, without hesitation, yes!

While the  best time to visit Niagara Falls, NY  is in the summer, this is also when it’s the most crowded. If you’re  planning a trip to Niagara Falls, Canada , budget enough money and days so you can get to everything.

Despite all the planning and calculating involved, this is a place that you must see at least once in your life.

Hi Eileen, May is a wonderful time to visit! The weather won’t be as hot and there should be fewer crowds. Niagara Falls is following current COVID restrictions, but proof of vaccination isn’t mandatory. The closest airport is the Niagara Falls International Airport.

Is everything still open like the first week in September? Or should we plan for an August trip? This will be our first trip to Niagara Falls.

The natural wonder is historically famous as a honeymoon destination—these days more in a campy, maudlin kinda way—but it also attracts a range of visitors, especially families. The tourist zone of the city centers around the Horseshoe Falls (the Canadian waterfall that is named for its bowed shape) and the American Falls, both of which gush into the Niagara Gorge. This waterfall destination may have a touristy reputation, but the surrounding fine hotels and a casino provide a classy backdrop to rest in after you've strolled around the falls or ventured beneath the mist.

It's widely agreed that the Canadian side of the falls, just across the water from Niagara Falls, New York , is more interesting to visit. To make the most of your visit to Niagara Falls, whether you decide to spend a night or two or just stop by on a road trip, you'll want to know all the possible attractions, plus the best places to eat and stay.

Planning Your Trip

• Best Time to Visit : Summertime offers the best weather for seeing the falls, but the crowds can be overwhelming. Fall is a great time to see the waterfall surrounded by fall foliage and although you'll need a jacket, it won't be too cold.
• Language : Canada's official languages are English and French, but you'll find that everyone speaks English in Niagara Falls, as it is part of the primarily English-speaking province of Ontario.
• Currency: Because it's located on the border, U.S. dollars will be accepted at most attractions, shops, and restaurants. However, you will get a better value if you pay with Canadian dollars.
• Getting Around: If you are coming from the U.S., it is simple to drive your car over the border, but you'll find that once you get there, it will be easy to walk between attractions. If you don't have a car, you can also use public buses and taxis to get around.
• Travel Tip: If you are crossing the border from the U.S., you will need to show your passport or a passport equivalent .

Things to Do

Niagara Falls caters full-on to tourists by offering up a plethora of splashy attractions that thrill, excite and amaze, such as the famous and longstanding Hornblower Tours , the Whirlpool Aerocar , or IMAX movie theater. Beyond waterfall-related adventures, there are several other ways to stay busy on a trip to Niagara Falls.

• The Niagara region is perfect for bike riding, especially the extensive and picturesque bike path system of the Niagara Parkway and the Niagara wine region, where cyclists can stop for tastings along the way.
• Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake are big golf destinations with many scenic, some waterside, courses like Legends on the Niagara and Grand Niagara Golf Club .
• Niagara Falls has a system of rivers and waterways where you can fish for rainbow trout, brown trout, salmon, lake trout, musky and small-mouth bass. Popular locations in both the upper and lower falls include Fort Niagara State Park and Niagara Reservation .
• Niagara Falls has outlet shopping on both sides of the border. Typically, the American side has Walden Galleria and Fashion Outlets Niagara amongst others, that offer the likes of Ralph Lauren, Guess, Coach, and Pottery Barn at up to 75 percent off regular prices.
• If the timing is right you may be able to partake in annual events like the Niagara Falls Festival of Lights , a light show that includes an illuminated five-kilometer route of displays, fireworks over the Falls, and more. This festival takes place during the holiday season between November and December, but the also popular Niagara Wine Festival usually occurs in January, during the ice wine season .

What to Eat and Drink

Niagara Falls is a tourist town, which means that most restaurants you'll find are overpriced and not very high quality. Chain restaurants are the norm, but if you're a true foodie, you may want to leave downtown and take a trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where the selection is more diverse and sophisticated. If it's just a small bite and a drink you're looking for in town, you can grab a pint in a classic Irish pub-like Doc Magilligan's or go for a quick wine tasting at Wine on Third. For lunch, you could also try Griffon Gastropub, which keeps over 50 different kinds of beers on tap.

If you prefer to dine near the water, Casa Mia is a cozy and authentic Italian restaurant that provides complimentary shuttle service to and from many hotels. The Niagara Fallsview Casino has at least a dozen restaurants, from casual to fine dining. Of course, the most romantic thing to do is to find somewhere to enjoy a meal or a few drinks within views of the natural wonder, which is possible to do at Canyon Creek Chophouse , which is part of the casino.

If the wine tasting piques your interest in the wine of this region, you may want to extend your trip to take a tour of Niagara-on-the-Lake . This romantic destination is home to popular wineries and vineyards like Peller Estates Winery and Wayne Gretzky Estates , owned by the famous Canadian hockey player. Hockey and wine fans can come together at this unique winery, which has its own skating rink, plus a whisky bar for when you get tired of wine.

Where to Stay

Niagara Falls has many big-name hotels, such as Doubletree, Sheraton, Courtyard Marriott, Embassy Suites, and more. You'll find many of these hotels offer rooms with views of Horseshoe Falls. When booking your hotel, consider how close to the Falls you want to be and how important it is to be able to see the waterfall from your room. Other hotels are closer to outlet shopping, such as the Outlet Collection in Niagara-on-the Lake, from where you can take a short shuttle to the waterfall.

If romance is the priority, some hotels offer in-suite hot tubs or you could go the non-traditional route with a boutique hotel like the Old Stone Inn or a bed-and-breakfast like Redwood Bed & Breakfast . There are many options , but that just means you'll have more choice when it comes to choosing something right for your budget or travel style. The majority of hotels are concentrated in the center of town, sometimes known as Clifton Hills, but you can find a few more options in the area surrounding Fallsview Boulevard.

Getting There

Niagara Falls is about 90 minutes from Toronto and 30 minutes from Buffalo. If you are traveling by plane, you have the choice of flying into Lester B. Pearson (Toronto International Airport) , Toronto Island Airport, Hamilton International Airport , The Greater Buffalo International Airport , or Niagara Falls International Airport. As a popular road trip destination, most people arrive by car, but you could also take a long-haul bus line to Toronto or Buffalo and transfer via public transportation. Go Transit  offers bus and train service from various Ontario cities, like Toronto and Hamilton. 

There are four ways to cross the border from the U.S. into Canada at Niagara Falls. The Lewiston Queenston Bridge is open 24 hours, the Whirlpool Bridge doesn't allow trucks, the Rainbow Bridge has a pedestrian crossing if you want to be able to say you literally walked across the border, or you can take your bike over the Peace Bridge.

Money Saving Tips

• If you plan to visit several attractions, consider buying a pass, such as the Niagara Falls & Great Gorge Adventure Pass , or for those visiting both U.S. and Canadian Niagara Falls attractions, the Niagara Falls Power Pass may be your best buy.
• Although winters are cold in Niagara Falls, travel during the winter months offers plenty of savings when it comes to accommodation and you can enjoy fewer crowds as well.
• When deciding which outlet malls to visit, the exchange rate should factor into deciding which side of the border you decide to shop on. The American side has better deals, but shoppers must consider personal allowances and the possibility of paying duty if shopping in the U.S. and returning to Canada (or vice versa), however, it could be worth shopping on the Canadian side if the exchange rate is in your favor.

Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls

The summer is the best time to visit Niagara Falls to experience the nicest weather as well as this is when all the attractions are open.

That said, the summer season also has the most tourists so everything is quite a bit busier. 

In the late spring (April-May) and early fall (September-October), visitors can still enjoy beautiful views and take advantage of less tourists.

Wintertime at Niagara Falls also has its own unique beauty but the attractions are a little more limited.

If it is your first time visiting Niagara Falls, I would visit in the summertime or early fall so you will have the opportunity to fully take in everything the Falls has to offer and enjoy all of the tours and attractions in this area.

Taking Kids to Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is extremely family friendly. We took our four young boys ages 1-9 and had an absolute blast!

Niagara Falls is Stroller Friendly

Most of the attractions at Niagara Falls are very stroller friendly or have specific areas for stroller parking.

You can even bring a stroller or wagon right on the Incline Railway without needing to fold it up!

If you are using the WEGO bus system, which is a bus line that connects many hotels and accommodations with most of the tourist attractions, you just need to fold up your stroller and you can bring it on to get to your destination. 

Niagara Falls has TONS of Family Friendly Attractions

Niagara Falls in Canada also has SO many things for kids and families to do.

From all of the attractions near the Falls plus all the fun to be had on Clifton Hill, there is no shortage of entertainment and excitement in Niagara Falls!

Family Friendly Accommodations + Restaurants

Additionally, many of the accommodation options in the area are family friendly as well as the restaurants.

I 100% recommend bringing kids to Niagara Falls.

You can find luxury hotels as well as more budget friendly ones as well.

Expert Recommendation

I recommend booking a hotel that is close to the Falls. This will put you in close range to all of the attractions that the area has to offer and will even make many of them walkable.

Staying near the Falls will also allow easy access to the WEGO bus line to get to the different attractions and sights as well!

Finally, staying near the Falls will let you enjoy them both during the day and at night. 

Embassy Suites Fallsview

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Fallsview hotel and absolutely loved it. We were able to book a room that had a view of the Falls.

Each night we watched the fireworks and were able to see the Illumination of the Falls right from our hotel room!

The Embassy Suites has easy access to the Incline Railway which takes you right down to the Table Rock Centre where some of the attractions are, the bus line, and the paved trail along the water where you can get some of the best views of the Falls.

Even more, the Embassy Suites has rooms that will sleep a large family. We had three KING beds in our hotel room.

The Embassy Suites also has breakfast every morning for guests.

My biggest complaint about the Embassy Suites was the elevator situation. You had to wait a very long time for an elevator at certain times of the day.

Other than the elevators, the Embassy Suites was a phenomenal place to stay on a Niagara Falls vacation.

Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls

If you are looking for additional kid friendly hotels, there is a Great Wolf Lodge, but it is not walking distance to most of the attractions or main tourist areas on Fallsview Boulevard or Clifton Hill. 

Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview

This is another hotel with great views of the Falls as well as a convenient location to restaurants and attractions.

Note: If you read the reviews of many of the hotels in the Niagara Falls area, they are not the best.

I think it is important to be aware that some of the rooms in these hotels may need upgrades and the service you receive may vary.

We had an enjoyable stay at the Embassy Suites with very few complaints.

When it comes to choosing a place to stay, I think the most important thing is to make sure you are located in an area where you can easily walk to some restaurants, attractions, and the WEGO bus line.

To me, visiting Niagara Falls is all about the Falls so my best recommendation is to (1) find a room at a hotel that will fit your family (2) at a budget that is comfortable for you and (3) has the amenities you want in addition to (4) having a view of the Falls from the hotel room or ability to walk to the Falls quickly. 

Best Ways to Get Around Niagara Falls

The three best ways to get around Niagara Fall is either by walking, driving, or riding the WEGO bus. 

Driving Around Niagara Falls

Driving around Niagara Falls is fairly easy. We drove to a restaurant and to the Whirlpool Aero Car.

Traffic is pretty light overall. It can get a little busy on Niagara Parkway between Table Rock and Niagara City Cruises but is still very doable.

Most of the Niagara Falls attractions have parking lots onsite or nearby. Some parking is free while other lots have a fee.

Niagara Falls WEGO Bus Lines

I think the best way to get around is to use the WEGO bus lines. It is super convenient and stress free.

If you purchase any of the Niagara Parks attraction packages , you will receive a 48 hour WEGO bus pass as well! 

Note: Your 48 hours starts as soon as you swipe your pass the first time you ride the bus. 

If you take the green line, you will be able to get to all of the attractions by Niagara Parks. 

There are additional bus lines that have stops near some of the hotels and other tourist areas. 

The WEGO bus is essentially a hop on and hop off bus service so we used it to get to all of the attractions we visited.

Walking Around Niagara Falls

Walking is another fantastic method to get around. 

Niagara Falls is very walkable. In fact, walking is the simplest way to get to many restaurants and attractions.

The Incline Railway is another method to get to the Table Rock Centre, the WEGO bus hub, and the paved Fallsview trail which follows the Niagara River from Horseshoe Falls to Niagara City Cruises.

If you have younger kids, I highly recommend using a stroller or wagon to get around. These can be folded up and taken on the bus as well as put right on the Incline Railway. Attractions are also either stroller friendly or have a designated area for stroller parking.

Niagara Falls Attractions

There are SO many thrilling, unique, and fun attractions in Niagara Falls. Here are my top 5 must do attractions.

1. Niagara City Cruises

Taking the Niagara City Cruises boat ride up to Horseshoe Falls and feeling the mist on your face is an unforgettable experience.

This 20 minute boat ride has the best views of all three Falls plus you get to really feel the power of Horseshoe Falls.

You will likely get wet on this cruise even with the poncho given to you. Make sure you are wearing waterproof footwear or have a change of shoes available.

Make sure to book your cruise time in advance online.

2. Whirlpool Aero Car

This was my absolute favorite attraction because the views were so phenomenal and the color of the water is just incredible.

The Whirlpool Aero Car is a suspended cable car that goes across the Niagara Gorge.

Beneath you will be the roaring rapids of the Niagara River as well as the swirling waters of the Niagara Whirlpool. 

Make sure to book a time to ride the Whirlpool Aero Car online in advance.

The Whirlpool Aero Car has its own free onsite parking lot if you want to drive there or is located on the WEGO green bus line. 

3. Niagara Parks Power Station and Tunnel

At this unique attraction, you will descend 180 feet in a glass elevator to the Tunnel. 

Once you arrive at the Tunnel you will walk almost .4 of a mile until you reach the observation deck where you will have amazing views of Horseshoe Falls as well as American and Bridal Veil Falls too!

Coming out of the Tunnel to the view of the Niagara River and the Falls is a spectacular experience!

Besides the Tunnel, visitors can also explore the Power Station building where for 100 years water from Horseshoe Falls was turned into electricity. 

Make sure to have on good shoes for walking through the Tunnel as it can be a little slippery in spots plus you may want a sweatshirt or light jacket for the 60 degree temperature inside of the Tunnel.

If you have small children, I recommend bringing your stroller for the walk through the Tunnel.

4. Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill is the fun and entertainment center of Niagara Falls.

This area is extremely touristy but a must see part of Niagara Falls! 

5. Niagara Falls Illumination and Fireworks

Finally, Niagara Falls is incredible during the day but at night, it is truly magical.

It is a must to experience the Falls at night as well!

Enjoy seeing the Falls lit up in a spectacular light show as well as the fireworks at 10pm through the first week of October.

You should be able view the Falls Illumination as well as the fireworks anywhere along Niagara Parkway between Table Rock and Niagara City Cruises.

If you can see the Falls from your hotel room or a restaurant, you should be able to watch the fireworks from there as well!

Niagara Falls has a variety of restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Some of my favorite family friendly restaurants include:

Flying Saucer

The Flying Saucer is a super short drive from the Fallsview and Clifton Hill area. 

This unique restaurant is shaped like a saucer so the kids will LOVE it!

The Flying Saucer also has tons of variety on its menu and affordable prices.

Zappi’s Pizza

Zappi’s Pizza is a quaint Italian eatery just a couple of blocks from the Embassy Suites Fallsview. 

The food is delicious and prices are decent too!

Zappi’s Pizza has a really nice outdoor area to eat as well!

Niagara Falls Itinerary

The number of days needed to visit Niagara Falls depends on your interests, travel style, and desired activities.

If you like to mix adventure and relaxation into a vacation, you will want to have three days.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind having a busy and jam packed day, one or two days will suffice. 

If you have kids with you, especially younger ones, you will likely want to take some breaks during the day so you will need three days for sure to experience everything. 

I think that three days is the optimal amount of time.

If you wanted to lengthen your trip to 4-5 days, there are definitely enough things to see and do in the area to keep you busy. 

Here are a few options for how you can spend different numbers of days in Niagara Falls:

Day Trip to Niagara Falls

For one day in Niagara Falls, I would make sure to take a walk along the Fallsview Trail to Table Rock Centre on one end and Niagara Cruises on the other end. 

It is about a 15 minute walk between these two destinations. 

Additionally, I highly recommend taking the Hornblower Niagara Falls Cruise.  

If you have easy access to your car, consider also doing the Whirlpool Aero Car .

Make sure your book times for both the Hornblower Niagara Falls Cruise and the Whirlpool Aero Car ahead of time.

You should also have time to do the Niagara SkyWheel or Skylon Tower .

Maybe have dinner at one of the restaurants with a view of the Falls or at Clifton Hill.

Finally, don’t miss the Illumination of the Falls and fireworks !

I think that doing these things will really give you a great feel for Niagara Falls and help you feel ecstatic about your day spent here.

Weekend Getaway to Niagara Falls

Doing a 2-3 day weekend getaway to Niagara Falls will make it worth it to purchase one of the Niagara Falls Parks packages . 

These packages include 48 hours to ride on the WEGO bus and a couple of the packages include the Incline Railway as well!

Spending 2-3 days in Niagara Falls will give you time to do many of the top attractions including the Niagara Falls Cruises, Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Parks Power Station and Tunnel, White Water Walk, and Whirlpool Aero Car.

Additionally, you could take the bus to the Niagara Floral Clock or the free Botanical Garden.

Also, you should have time to enjoy some of the attractions on Clifton Hill plus enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Falls.

Longer Vacation to Niagara Falls

Having 4-5 days will definitely give you ample time to do all of the 25 incredible things to do in Niagara Falls plus so much more!

You will even have time to visit Niagara-on-the-Lake and possibly venture out to some other areas as well.

Spending 4-5 days in Niagara Falls will make your vacation feel more relaxing as you can slow down and enjoy the views, take leisurely walks, and take some additional tours.

Top Tips for Visiting Niagara Falls

Make sure to bring have your passport for everyone in your group if you are not a Canadian citizen.

Plan what you are going to do for money. We simply used our credit card that has no foreign transaction fees the whole time.

Bring extra shoes or waterproof footwear in case your feet get wet at some of the attractions especially Niagara Falls Cruises.

Dress in layers or bring clothes for all types of temperatures. Also, walking around sometimes the mist from the Falls can actually get you quite wet!

If you have younger kids, bring a stroller or wagon. Niagara Falls is very stroller friendly!

If you are staying overnight, try to book an accommodation that has a view of the Falls or that is walkable to most all of the attractions and restaurants. You will likely want to be on Fallsview Boulevard or Clifton Hill areas.

Don’t be afraid to use the WEGO bus lines to get around too! It is convenient and fairly easy.

Book attractions ahead of time online or if you purchase one of the Niagara Parks Packages, they will assign you times at each attraction when you visit the Niagara Falls Information Booths.

If you purchase one of the Niagara Parks packages online, you will need to visit one of the Niagara Falls Information booths, attractions or Welcome Center to get your lanyard and card that will get you into the attractions as well as that you will scan to ride the WEGO bus and Incline Railway. When you visit this booth or attraction, the team member working will also assign you times for the attractions that are part of your pass.

There's More to the Niagara Falls Region Than the Iconic Waterfall — Here's How to Plan the Perfect Trip

Most travelers venture to Niagara Falls for the picture-perfect view, but a host of new visitor experiences can help you see this world wonder in a whole other light.

As we drove past North America's largest waterfall, Lezlie Harper, the founder of Niagara Bound Tours told the story of a sign that once hung in downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario.

"It read 'Don't forget to see the falls,' " she said with a laugh, before gesturing to the majestic cascade in front of us. "As if you could miss it!" I laughed, too, but the truth is that, for many years, I had blithely driven past this wonder of the world with barely a glance.

When I was a kid growing up in a Toronto suburb, Niagara Falls was the place I begrudgingly visited when relatives flew in from out of town. I didn't know then that it is actually a trio—Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls sit side-by-side along the Canada-U.S. border—or that the charms of the region extend far beyond its main attraction.

But last autumn, I took a four-day trip with a girlfriend, Viji, and was reintroduced to the landmark and the city—along with its quaint little sister about 25 minutes north, Niagara-on-the-Lake. And on this visit, I found a new appreciation for the place I thought I knew.

Viji and I started at—where else?—the falls. Over lunch at Table Rock House Restaurant (entrées $24–$38), which is perched at the edge of Horseshoe Falls, we oohed and aahed at the crashing curtain of water right in front of us. Next, we took a short stroll to the Niagara Parks Power Station , which used the falls to provide electricity to much of the region for a century, beginning in 1905. It reopened in 2021 as an interactive museum that highlights the lives of the people who worked at the plant.

As we stood in the shadows of the turbines we'd learned about earlier, projections brought the workers and machinery to life.

We also took a hard-hat sneak peek at an upcoming attraction, which has since then opened. As of July 2021, a glass elevator takes people 180 feet underground into the old Tailrace Tunnel. The descent mimics the route the water once took through the power plant. After disembarking at the bottom, guests are able to stand on an outdoor platform for an entirely new vantage point of the falls.

That evening, we had dinner at AG Inspired Cuisine (prix fixe $89), a restaurant set in a former creamery in downtown Niagara Falls. The menu—which included a winter-squash bisque, juniper-roasted deer loin with a vegetable cassoulet, and a cranberry poached pear—celebrates Niagara terroir, and much of the produce comes from the restaurant's own farm 10 minutes away.

Later in the night we returned to the power station to experience Currents: Niagara's Power Transformed, an immersive indoor light and sound show. As we stood in the shadows of the turbines we'd learned about earlier, projections brought the workers and machinery to life and helped convey the importance of the plant to the region and the province. Afterward, we retired to the historic Old Stone Inn Boutique Hotel (doubles from $159), located steps from the water.

On our second morning we met Harper, our guide for a tour that followed the journey of the enslaved Africans (including Harper's own ancestors) who made their way to Canada. Most history books stop with their arrival via the Underground Railroad , but Harper shared what happened in the decades that followed. She told us about Josiah Henson—a once-enslaved man who found his way to freedom along with his wife and four children, inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, and became a founder of one of the most successful Black communities in southern Ontario. Harper also talked about the predecessor of the NAACP, a civil rights organization called the Niagara Movement, which had its initial meeting in 1905 in Fort Erie, a town on the Niagara River. As I looked out at the powerful waters, I found it hard not to become emotional at the thought of the men, women, and children who risked their lives to cross over to freedom.

Viji and I continued our drive along the river to meet Tim Johnson at the Landscape of Nations . He is the director of the Landscape of Nations 360° Indigenous Education Initiative, a nonprofit that aims to educate Canadians about the contributions of Indigenous peoples. Johnson walked us across the site of the War of 1812's pivotal Battle of Queenston Heights. We paused just outside a collection of rails meant to symbolize a longhouse, an Indigenous style of dwelling, before following a stone trail through a memorial built to acknowledge the Six Nations' aid in the war.

Visitors can enter without a guide, but being with Johnson allowed Viji and me to ask questions and reframe the history we'd been taught as kids. I made a mental note to book a full Indigenous Niagara Living Museum tour in the future.

Afterward, we wound north to Niagara-on-the-Lake and checked in to 124 on Queen Hotel & Spa (doubles from $209) . Our apartment-like two-bedroom suite sat above a row of shops, offering views of the old-fashioned main street below. Recent renovations added a lounge for both guests and locals, plus a hydrotherapy-focused spa.

As I looked out at the powerful waters, I found it hard not to become emotional at the thought of the men, women, and children who risked their lives to cross over to freedom.

After a long day, we were thankful to be just steps from Treadwell Cuisine (prix fixe $95), an upscale restaurant in Niagara-on-the-Lake's Old Town. I ordered steak frites with a Cabernet Franc from the local Stratus Vineyards, while Viji went for a Sauvignon Blanc from nearby Five Rows Craft Wine to pair with her pan-seared scallops. From our window booth, we watched a parade of shoppers wander the street outside and remarked on how rarely we take the opportunity to sit and absorb the scenes around us. It was a simple pleasure to do just that.

This is wine country—there are more than 50 vineyards in the Niagara region along Lake Ontario—and Niagara-on-the-Lake is particularly renowned for its ice wines. We began our tasting tour just outside of town with lunch at the intimate Two Sisters Vineyards (entrées $17–$40) . As it turns out, sipping Cabernet Francs and Rieslings while nibbling a delicate beef carpaccio and crisp pizza is a good way to spend an afternoon.

What seemed like just a couple of hours later, we were back at the table, this time indulging in a dinner of roasted Ontario duck breast at Trius Winery & Restaurant (prix fixe from $66) . Winemaker Craig McDonald paired his award-winning vintages with chef Frank Dodd's creations, which included butternut-squash soup and a spiced-pumpkin blondie dessert.

After dinner, we experienced one of Niagara-on-the-Lake's most beloved attractions: the Shaw Festival , which began in the early 1960s as an annual event that celebrated the works of George Bernard Shaw, but now includes a variety of productions in three theaters. We saw Desire Under the Elms, Eugene O'Neill's complicated, tragic love story, and made plans to return to see Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest in the spring.

On our final day, Harper's words not to forget the falls were on my mind, so we headed back to where our journey began. We were ready for some downtime, so we booked sessions in the Hydrotherapy Infinity tub at Christienne Fallsview Spa .

As I sank into the steaming waters and stared at the falls and the gardens that surround them, I thought of the little girl who'd once underappreciated this gem. No longer. This, I thought as the bubbles worked their magic, was the postcard memory I came for.

What is Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls is a group of large waterfalls that are located in the Niagara River on the eastern coast of the United States and Canada . They are located on the border between the two countries, and are composed of three waterfalls.

Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls – Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and American Falls. These three waterfalls span between Canada and the United States.

The falls were formed during the melt-off of the last Ice Age (around 12,000 years ago), when the extreme flow of water formed the falls. During the height of summer and fall run-off periods, there are more than 700,000 gallons of water flowing over the falls per second.

You can approach the falls from either side. That means that if you’re an American you won’t need a passport to visit the falls, and vice versa for the Canadians.  You can just stay on your own side.

How Do I Get to Niagara Falls?

There are two airports you can fly into within close proximity to Niagara Falls. There’s the Toronto airport on the Canadian side, and the Buffalo, NY, airport on the U.S. side.

From Toronto Airport, the drive to the falls is about a 1.5-hour drive. From Buffalo, the drive is around 30 minutes. I do advise renting a car because it will be so much easier for you to get around, but it’s not entirely necessary.

There is a train station in Niagara Falls that you can come into from Toronto, New York, or other close by cities. Once in Niagara Falls, as long as you’re staying within the main tourist area, you can walk or cab to just about everything.

When to Do a Niagara Falls Vacation

Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year. In fact, it never closes. However, some of the attractions do close during the winter period when conditions are poor. 

Summer months are extremely crowded at the falls and you’ll end up spending more money due to high season prices. So, we recommend visiting Niagara Falls during the fall or spring, if possible. These are the shoulder months, so you won’t have to fight crowds or overspend on accommodations.

Some key info about the weather:

• Summer months average high temperature ranges between 70F and 80F
• Fall peak foliage happens typically in the third week of October and it’s a beautiful time to visit the falls
• In winter, some attractions may be closed, but the falls are really beautiful when shrouded in ice

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

As mentioned, there is a Canadian and United States side to the falls. You can stay on either side and there are great hotels and restaurants in both areas.

One of the main reasons for going to Niagara Falls is for the view, so I highly recommend splurging for a hotel that has a view. I personally love the Hilton Niagara Falls. Here’s a list of a few others I would recommend that have great views (click to see room rates):

Niagara Falls Tours

One of the best ways to see all aspects of the falls without putting in a ton of effort to coordinate everything is to book an organized tour. Here are a few that we recommend.

• Best of Niagara Falls Tour from Niagara Falls, Ontario – this is a 5-hour comprehensive tour of the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, including a trip up Skylon Tower, the Journey Behind the Falls excursion, and the Hornblower cruise.
• Niagara Falls American Side Highlights Tour – this 4-hour tour includes Prospect Point Observation Tower, the Maid of the Mist boat tour, and Cave of the Winds on-land tour. You’ll visit Bridal Veil Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Goat Island, and the Mighty Whirlpool.

6 Best Ways to Experience the Falls

Getting a close-up look at the falls, where you can see AND feel the full majesty of the powerful falls is likely your top priority when visiting Niagara Falls, so we want to make that as easy as possible for you. Check out these places to go for the best views of  Niagara Falls , so you can make the most of your trip and create unforgettable memories.

Float Right Up to the Falls

From the Canadian side of the Falls, take the Hornblower Niagara Cruise . It is a great way to enjoy the river, as well as the actual waterfalls. The boat trip takes you up the river past the waterfalls on the American side and into the gorge that contains the spectacular Horseshoe Fall. Once there you get to go within a few feet of all that roaring water. It is a great way to experience the power and the majesty of the falls.

At certain times of the year, you can enjoy an illumination or fireworks cruise. Being right next to the Falls when they are lit up by colorful lights really is a memorable experience.

Go Behind the Falls

If you want to get even closer, take the Journey Behind the Falls tour. During this tour, you take an elevator 150 feet down into 130-year-old tunnels. From there you can walk out onto a observation deck that puts you behind the Horseshoe Falls and its raging stream of water falling at over 40 miles per hour. You’ll need to put on your bright yellow poncho to keep from getting soaked from the mist coming off the falls.

See the Falls from Above

As you’ve already seen, there are many observation towers and points from which you can get a bird´s eye view of the Falls. Since the Falls are the main attraction, and no doubt the major reason you visited this area, you should see it from as many angles as possible.

One of the best is from above, at the Skylon tower, on the Canadian side. At the Skylon Tower Observation Deck ( get tickets in advance here) , you’ll be 775 feet above the falls. The deck is so high that you can see 8,000 square miles of Canada and the U.S from this vantage point.

If you like fine dining you will really enjoy the world-class food that is served in the revolving restaurant. Plus, staying for a meal is a great way to enjoy the view for longer. There are a few other attractions to enjoy in the Skylon Tower , including a family fun center, a 3D/4D movie about the falls, and a glass-blowing gallery.

Walk Alongside the Falls

If you’ve ever been white water rafting, then you can probably imagine the power and force of Class 6 rapids. Walking alongside the river will give you an up-close view of just how powerful these rapids are.

On the White Water Walk , you’ll be able to walk a quarter mile along the boardwalk that follows the base of the gorge. It gives you a unique view of the rock layers that form the gorge, and you can stop off at viewing platforms for an even closer view of the water raging by. Tickets are approximately $17 for adults.

Panoramic Falls Views

Another fascinating way to see the Falls from a different angle is on the Niagara Skywheel. This Ferris wheel glides up to 175 feet over the Clifton Hill area, and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the falls and the city below. From the ride, you’ll glimpse unique views of both the Horseshoe and American Falls.

The gondolas are small, built for 2-4 people, and are fully enclosed and air-conditioned. It’s always best to purchase tickets in advance for the ride so you can skip the line. The ride lasts about 10 minutes. Tickets are approximately $13 for adults.

The Niagara Skywheel isn’t the only tourist attraction located in Clifton Hill. In fact, this area is one of the busiest, because it’s packed with touristy activities. Whether you’ll want to visit any of them is a matter of personal preference, but you can find things like midway games, a wax museum, a mini-golf course, a 6D theater ride, and tons of touristy chain restaurants.

Niagara Falls History Museum

After seeing the Falls for yourself, a visit to the Niagara Falls History Museum is a nice way to follow up and learn more. This museum contains exhibits that tell you about the history of the area, its people, geology, and industry, as well as the waterfalls themselves.

You only have to take a short walk from your Niagara Falls Hotel to find dozens of restaurants and bars right on your doorstep. Here are a few of our favorites.

You can also explore the area’s budding craft brewery scene, which has been growing steadily since 2010, with a handful of breweries and brew pubs in the area. Food trucks are also starting to become more prevalent in Niagara.

One of the best ways to enjoy a plethora of craft beer from Niagara is on a brewery tour. We liked this Luxury Craft Beer Tour in Niagara . Located at the north end of Niagara Falls, Counterpart Brewing is a local craft brewery that opened in 2019. The beer is great and the food is also worthy of the visit.

Wine Tasting in Niagara Falls

Did you know that there are dozens of wineries within a very short distance of Niagara Falls in Niagara on the Lake? This wine region’s most prized export is the fruity, rich, and sweet ice wine, and there are award-winning vineyards and wineries all over this fastest-growing wine region in Canada where you can try the wines.

For wine enthusiasts, there are numerous wineries in the surrounding Niagara area in Ontario. Many of these wineries are open to the public for taste samples as well as tours of their orchards and facilities. If you haven’t tried ice wine made from frozen grapes picked in the middle of the Canadian winter, there’s ample opportunity to do so here in the Niagara region at both the wineries that make them as well as the many restaurants that feature them.

When it comes to planning your trip, make sure your dates coincide with at least one of Niagara’s many food events. For a classic summer vibe during August, there’s  St. Catherine’s Ribfest in Montebello Park. When is the best time to go to Niagara Falls?

Not surprisingly most people visited Niagara Falls in the summer. The few who did go in the winter said they were impressed by the falls surrounded by ice, but expressed regret that they could not go on the Maid of the Mist (it stops running in October). You should not go to Niagara in the winter unless you are prepared for the cold. Going in the fall will enable you to enjoy the foliage in Upstate New York along the way.

If possible, we recommend including a stop in Niagara Falls on a visit to Toronto for a great long weekend trip from New York or Boston . Chances are you will not be disappointed in a trip to Niagara Falls if you go when you are prepared for the weather, do not stay more than two days, and do not have high expectations of the attractions outside of those related to the falls.

We are visiting in the next week or so, and was curious about the stuff to do. We want to do the Hornblower cruise, journey behind the falls, skylon Tower, butterfly place, and wanted to see whats the best way to do all of these. Should we plan on doing one each day, or several in one day.

3-Day Niagara Falls Itinerary for Planning the Perfect Weekend Trip

So you’re planning a trip to Niagara Falls, getting the logistics of your itinerary and wondering how to make it the best weekend ever. You’ve come to the right place, my Rambling friend!

Seeing how Niagara Falls is within the top 10 largest waterfalls in the world and claims the top spot as the most-visited waterfall in the world, you won’t want to skip a beat.

The perfect Niagara Falls itinerary starts with a plan on how to visit the Falls, what to do in the area and the best airport to fly into to make your trip spectacular. I recommend flying in early Friday morning so you can beat the rush of visitors that flock to these majestic Falls every weekend.

But if you can’t don’t worry. This is the only 3-day itinerary you’ll need — whether you fly in on Friday morning or Friday night!

How to Visit Niagara Falls on a 3-Day Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday)

If you arrive in Niagara Falls on Friday night, wait until Saturday or Sunday morning to jump on the Hornblower Niagara and catch different angles of the Falls. You’ll still want to see the Falls at night!

1. Arrive at the Airport and Head to Niagara Falls

To start day 1, it really depends on what time you arrive for your Niagara Falls visit and what time of year it is. If you don’t get started with your Niagara Falls weekend until Friday night, don’t worry you’ll still be able to see everything on this Niagara Falls itinerary. You’ll just have to switch a few things around (which I’ll note when we come to them) and you may be a little more tired on your flight home Sunday night.

If you arrive at night, head to the Falls to see them all lit up under artificial lights, shining blue, red, green and every color under the rainbow. It’s a pretty cool sight to see and it gives you a different perspective of the majestic Falls.

Whether you arrived at night or during the day, you’ll want to catch the Falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night for a special fireworks display !

If you arrive during the day, you’ll be happy to know that seeing the Falls doesn’t take that much time and you can knock out a ton of different angles in just a few hours. But take your time and take it in, because these Falls are incredible.

2. Jump on Hornblower Niagara

If you’re lucky enough to begin your Niagara Falls weekend early on a Friday, I suggest you drop your bags wherever you’re staying and head directly toward the Hornblower Niagara! Getting this in on Friday means you won’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn Saturday or Sunday to beat the crowds of people swarming here.

The Hornblower is the boat that takes off from the Canadian banks of the Niagara River and sails you directly toward the three Falls that make up Niagara (American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe). After smoothly sailing by American and Bridal Veil Falls, Hornblower gets you up close and personal with Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three that spans 2,700 feet wide and 167 feet high.

The boat takes you near the spinning whirlpool vortex at the base of Horseshoe, exposing you to the pouring waters of the Niagara River flowing over its rocky spine. You will get wet, so wear that poncho with pride!

Seeing Niagara Falls from the Hornblower boat is the best way because you get to experience it as well. You get to bask in its waters and stand at the bottom of the Falls gazing upward toward the most-visited waterfall in the world.

3. Catch Different Angles of Niagara Falls

From the paid, self-guided tour of Journey Behind the Falls to the free viewing points of Rambler’s Rest Pavilion , Niagara Falls View , Niagara Falls Viewpoint and Table Rock Viewing Area , you should take in Niagara Falls from as many different angles as possible.

Realistically, there’s no bad spot to view Niagara Falls from, so I highly recommend you start walking and get to as many as possible! But, if you’re flying home from the U.S., save going to the American side of the Falls for Sunday. It’ll be on your way and you won’t have to pay the international crossing fee twice.

4. Explore Downtown Niagara and Surrounding Area

There are truly three parts of Niagara: the touristy area where there are lots of flashing lights, restaurants, game rooms and even a Ferris wheel and go-kart track; the casino district just south of the touristy area, which has, you guessed it, a lot of casinos; and the locals-centric downtown Niagara, where you can find bars, eateries and coffee shops filled with locals and a few tourists.

While you’ll need a car or ride-sharing service to get to downtown Niagara, the other two areas can be (and are better when) explored on foot. If you’re into casinos, head to that area for one night and take it all in.

I’m not much of a casino dweller, so I walked through during the day to check it out and spent most of the nights walking the streets of the touristy area, grabbing food, drinks and checking out what the shops have to offer.

Day 2 (Saturday)

If you arrived at Niagara Falls late Friday night, hold off on the rental car and head straight for the Hornblower Niagara boat first thing in the morning to beat the crowds. The Hornblower is an absolute must when planning a trip to Niagara Falls.

Once you pick up the rental car, you can either go straight to Niagara-on-the-Lake or hit a hiking trail. If you hike first, it’ll make the wine taste a little better and give you a reason to splurge on the impeccable food!

1. Pick Up Rental Car

This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but picking up a rental car is key. It allows you to get out of Niagara Falls and explore more of what the region has to offer. I booked my rental car a day in advance and still paid just $7 USD per day.

You can try your luck with booking a rental the day before if you’d like. There are plenty of rental car companies in Niagara Falls, so you may be able to get a cheaper rate since they’ll just want to make some money.

2. Take a Hike

Niagara Falls, Ontario may not be known for its hiking trails, but there are a ton of trails with some pretty spectacular views all across the region. My recommendation is to go to nearby Niagara Glen Nature Center and Park and hike the Niagara Whirlpool Loop .

That’s a pretty easy hiking trail (3.4 miles and about 1.5 hours) that starts on the top of the cliff overlooking the Niagara River before taking you down to its aqua blue banks for about 2.5 miles. Hiking first thing in the morning will make the wine taste better! (More on that later.)

3. Explore Niagara-On-The-Lake

After picking up the rental car and taking your morning hike, drive 30 minutes north to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where a bustling town with streets lined with old 19th-century buildings and tall green trees sits on the banks of Lake Ontario.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the heart of Ontario’s wine country, boasting nearly 40 wineries within its city limits. After enjoying a nice lunch (with a glass of wine on the side), you’re ready to experience wine country!

4. Go to a Winery

There are plenty of wineries to choose from (and even a wine bike tour that see you riding a rented bicycle down the streets of backcountry Ontario stopping at a handful of wineries), I highly suggest going to Konzelmann Estate Winery .

It’s the only winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake that sits directly on the banks of Lake Ontario and is open to the public. The wine is tremendous and the views are spectacular! Ontario is known for its famous ice wine, which is a sweet dessert wine made from grapes that withstand the harsh Ontario winter.

Day 3 (Sunday)

1. hike the american side of falls.

After dropping off the rental car and before heading back home, there’s still one thing you must do before leaving Niagara Falls: check out the lesser-visited American side. It’s home to Niagara State Park and Goat Island, which each offer unique views of the Falls and excellent hiking trails.

It also has the Maid of the Mist (the equivalent to the Hornblower Niagara) and an excursion that allows you to walk right up to Bridal Veil and American Falls (similar to Journey Behind the Falls).

2. Head to the Airport

Unfortunately, this is the time you bid adieu to Niagara Falls, the spectacular sights it offers and the diversity in its wine regions and scenic hikes. If you’re like me, you’ll probably find yourself back in the Niagara Falls region again sometime in your life.

What Is the Best Airport to Fly Into for Niagara Falls?

For Americans planning a trip to Niagara Falls (or if you’re flying from the United States), the closest airport to fly into is the Niagara Falls Airport. However, it’s a two-terminal airport so most flights will be routed to nearby Buffalo. It’s only a $4 1.5-hour ride by public bus or a 45-minute drive by car .

If you’re a Canadian flying in to see the Falls, the closest airport is in Toronto, which will then require a 1.5-hour drive or bus ride into Niagara Falls.

How to plan a visit to Niagara Falls Canada?

Nearly 14 million people visit the Niagara Falls every year for a once in a lifetime experience. Other than the natural wonder of the Falls themselves, there are so many year-round attractions and special events that are organized at the Niagara Falls that it becomes difficult to fit all of them into a travel itinerary.

HOW TO PLAN A VISIT TO NIAGARA

1. Decide upon dates during which to visit: Though the Falls are open throughout the year, the best season to visit Niagara would be from spring to the fall season.

2. Make reservations for accommodations: There are hotels, bed and breakfast inns, campsites and hostels suitable for every budget.

Hotels located in the Clifton Hill area provide easy access to Niagara Falls promenade and are affordably priced.

3. Travel to Niagara: Niagara Falls is easily accessible via international airports, trains and by road. If you are traveling from Toronto to Niagara Falls, there are various bus tour operators. 2.  White water rapids :  This consists of a walk along the white water rapids of the Niagara River.  You are a witness to the raw power of the river from close quarters.

3.  Botanical Gardens :  It is a short drive north of the Niagara Falls and consists of 40 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens.  The famous Butterfly Conservatory is also located here.

4.  Whirlpool Aero Car :  The Whirlpool Aero Car or Spanish Aero Car is a cable car located in Niagara Falls, Ontario that transports passengers over a section of the Niagara River referred to as the Niagara Whirlpool.  The system was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and has been upgraded several times since 1916.

5.  Hornblower Niagara Cruise :  State-of-the art catamaran boats take you out on the Niagara River all the way to the base of the Falls.  The cruise generally operates daily from April 1 to November 30.

6.  Niagara Skywheel :  Enjoy a panoramic view of the Falls during the day and illuminated fall at night in this temperature controlled gondola.

TWO-DAY TRIP TO NIAGARA

If you are going to Niagara Falls with your family for a vacation, it is good to find attractions that will be fun for the whole family.

1.  Niagara Falls :  The Niagara Parkway runs along the River Niagara from the town of Fort Erie, Ontario to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.  Take a walk along the Niagara River promenade for stunning views of the Falls.  Children are sure to enjoy a helicopter ride, so book a helicopter ride out to the Falls if your budget permits it.

HISTORICAL SITES Canada played a very important role as the last stop on the Underground Railroad. Learn more about the nation’s history by visiting some of the heritage sites.

Old Fort Erie: The Fort played an important role in the War of 1812. Old Fort Erie is located on the southern edge of the Town of Fort Erie, Ontario, directly across the Niagara River. Each year, during the second weekend of August, hundreds of historical re-enactment enthusiasts come together to reenact the siege of Fort Erie.

Mackenzie Printery: Located in the quaint village of Queenston, the Mackenzie Printery is the restored home of publisher, rebellion leader, and Toronto’s first mayor, William Lyon Mackenzie. It offers visitors a hands-on experience with a working linotype and 8 operating heritage presses.

McFarland House: This Georgian-style manor dates back to the year 1800 and was first built and owned by John McFarland, an engineer with the British Navy. Costumed interpreters provide guided tours of this historic home throughout the day and host several special events during the holiday season. Guests can enjoy delicate baked desserts and afternoon tea.

Laura Secord Homestead: Laura Ingersoll Secord was a heroine of the War of 1812. Witness where her famous hike to warn the British soldiers began. It is the restored residence of Laura Secord. Guided tours are provided by costumed interpreters.

Battlefield of Chippewa: The Niagara Campaign in 1814 was the longest and costliest military operation of the War of 1812. Visit the preserved 121 hectares of battlefield.

Brock’s Monument: It is located in Queenston Heights Park and is the highlight of the park with its imposing 56-metre column dedicated to Major General Sir Isaac Brock, a Canadian icon from the War of 1812.

Fort George: A British Fort which played a key role in the struggle for the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812. It is located at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Fort George has been restored to its state on the eve of the war. Costumed staff recreate lifestyles and activities of the period.

NATURE AND GARDENS

Botanical Gardens: Established in 1936, the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens presents visitors with 99 acres of beautifully maintained gardens. Its world-famous rose garden features over 2,400 roses. This section of the parkland is also home to the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture.

Butterfly Conservatory: Located on the grounds of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Conservatory is a tropical paradise full of lush vegetation, trickling waterfalls and thousands of vibrantly coloured butterflies. Over 2,000 butterflies, made up of 45 different species, call this beautiful space home.

The Floral Clock :  This is a popular stop on the Niagara Parkway and is one of the most photographed sights.  The building of the Floral Clock was initiated by the chairman of Ontario Hydro in 1950.  Today, it is maintained by Niagara Parks, though the clock is still maintained by Ontario Hydro.

Floral Showhouse :  It is just a short walk south from Niagara Falls and Table Rock Centre.  Some of the rarest and largest collections of orchids, flowers, and other tropical plant species are on display throughout the year.  Eight floral shows are put up every year that reflect the changing seasons.  For further information, please visit here .

Bird Kingdom :  Bird Kingdom is an aviary in the tourist district of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  It is just a 5-minute walk from Niagara Falls and is open all year.  Opened in May 2003, it is the largest free flying indoor aviary in the world.

Marineland :  This is a themed amusement park and zoo for both marine and land animals in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Opened in 1961, the park has roller coasters and a triple tower ride.  There are marine shows and exhibits of dolphins, walruses, sea lions, an orca, and beluga whales.  The park also keeps bears, deer and other land animals.  The park is seasonal to check the schedule before visiting.

Niagara Glen Nature Centre: The trails through the glen overlook the Niagara River and offer a spectacular view of the Niagara River Whirlpool.

RIDES ON THE FALLS

Zipline to the Falls: The MistRider Zipline to the Falls at Grand View Marketplace takes you on a breathtaking ride into the gorge, towards the base of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. You will travel down 2,200 feet, soaring past the American Falls and landing atop the Falls observation deck at the base of the Horseshoe Falls.

Niagara Skywheel :  The 175-foot Ferris wheel is located in the middle of Clifton Hill area.  It gives an amazing view of the Falls and other landmarks.

Whirlpool Aero Car :  Also called the Spanish Aero Car, this cable car service transports passengers over the Niagara Whirlpool.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum :   Located in the heart of Niagara Falls on Clifton Hill since 1963, the always growing Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum still holds onto its reputation as Niagara’s best museum.  You’ll find over 500 mind-boggling displays of rare and amusing oddities.  Here, you’ll see some of the most incredible customs, unusual hobbies, and weirdest artifacts from around the world.

Niagara Daredevil Exhibit :  It is conveniently located next to the Niagara IMAX Theatre.  It houses the only collection of the original daredevil barrels.

Niagara Falls Museum :  It is most notable for being the oldest museum in Canada.  It is dedicated to preserving the history of Niagara Falls City and the surrounding areas.

Guinness World Record Museum: Located on Clifton Hill, it houses displays, photographs and interactive exhibits of various world records

St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canal Centre: The Welland Canal is a ship canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The Welland Canals Centre’s elevated observation platform lets visitors see ships from around the world as they navigate Lock 3 on their way through the St. Lawrence Seaway System. The centre also provides opportunities to picnic in its park or enjoy the playground with your family. The small museum houses exhibits on local history and the canals.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS

Greg Frewin Theatre: This modern theatre with dinner service option hosts a Las Vegas-style magic show and tribute bands.

Oakes Garden Theatre: Located directly across from the American Falls, it is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery. This spectacular garden is the entranceway to Queen Victoria Park. Concerts and special events are held here throughout the summer. Decorative iron gates, Queenston limestone edging, lily ponds and bordering shrub have been meticulously integrated to the formal garden design and offer visitors a tranquil escape.

Lundy’s Lane: Welcome to a shopper’s paradise! There is a wide range of plazas, boutiques and gift shops on Lundy’s Lane. Lundy`s Lane Tourist Area offers over 2 miles of affordable accommodations, shopping, restaurants and entertainment. Restaurants offer scrumptious international and local cuisine.

SEASONAL ATTRACTIONS

There are some attractions that can be seen at only certain times of the year. Be sure not to miss them if you happen to visit Niagara Falls during those times.

Winter Festival of Lights: From early November until the end of January, the stretch between Queen Victoria Park to Dufferin Islands is illuminated by millions of lights in various formations, making Niagara Falls a winter wonderland.

We’ll go through some easy tips to help you plan a great trip to Niagara Falls, Canada or New York. You’ll learn where to get the best views, where to stay, and what to do to make your trip fun and easy.

I’ve been to both sides of the Niagara Falls, as well as taken the Maid of the Mist to the falls & it really is an amazing experience. Checking off this bucket list item was a highlight of our trip.

Niagara Falls USA versus Niagara Falls, Canada

I prefer the Canadian side, if you only have a short time, as it has the best panoramic Niagara Falls views , a beautiful floral display in the gardens, and more lodging options.

It’s also home to the lively tourist district of Clifton Hill. Which offers restaurants, souvenirs, the big Sky Wheel and many family friendly activities.

The Horseshoe Falls, which is the largest of the three falls, is also located on the Canadian side. You can Journey Behind the Falls , take a Hornblower Cruise and see the falls from to top of Skylon Tower.

The USA side is in Niagara Falls State Park, a quieter experience, which features hiking trails and scenic overlooks. If you want to get up close and personal with the falls, the American side offers the iconic Maid of the Mist boat ride, which takes you right into the mist of the falls.

I had a chance to visit the falls and take the Maid of the Mist a few years ago, and it was an amazing experience. Being so close to the power of the falls, I kept thinking about Annie, the first person to go over the falls in a barrel , what a wild and crazy ride it must have been.

The American side also has the Cave of the Winds tour, which takes you down behind the base of the Bridal Veil Falls.

LOCAL TIPS :

• I highly recommend touring the falls from both the USA & Canada sides to get the full Niagara Falls experience. Each side has it’s charms.
• Walk across the Rainbow Bridge from the US to Canada or vice versa for amazing fall views. Bring appropriate ID as it’s a border crossing. On the US side, we’ve found the best location to be dropped off is the corner of Prospect Street and Niagara Street in Niagara Falls NY. On the Canada side the parking lot at 5827 River Rd, Niagara Falls, ON, Canada is a good place to pick up / drop off.

Best Time To Visit Niagara Falls

The best time to visit Niagara Falls is between June and August, as it’s the nicest weather, averaging in the high 70°s (25°C). Niagara Falls in summer is busier, and peak season, so while attractions are all open, they also tend to be more expensive and busy.

Spring and Fall have fewer crowds, as the temperature drops. I think visiting in the fall gives you the best of both worlds, fall foliage & stunning waterfall views. Winter is also fun due to the frozen wonderland of the falls covered in icicles and ice formations.

Niagara Falls State Park is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and it is a fun family friendly destination year round. 

Niagara Falls Lodging 

Of course, the first thing on any family vacation itinerary is the arrival at the hotel. The Niagara Falls area features a few hotels designed specifically for fantastic views of the falls (Canada side), so you don’t have to leave your room for breathtaking vistas of the grand waterfall. 

There are also fun resort options close by with attractions onsite on either side for your trip to Niagara Falls with kids.

Niagara Falls was the first state park in America and draws a crowd of over 12 million annual visitors thanks to its history and beautiful views. 

Enter the falls through Niagara Falls State Park , USA. Once you are there, you’ll get the closest and best views of the falls from anywhere in the area. You can see both the two main falls and the Bridal Falls from platforms and stairways throughout the park.

For an unobstructed view of all three, as well as a prime spot to do a little bird watching, we found visiting the Niagara State Park Observation Tower is key. Keep your eyes out for peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and a variety of gulls.

The Maid of the Mist iconic boat tour of Niagara Falls has been operating since 1846. This tour can only be accessed on US side, and get tickets at the booths by the Observation Tower.

Journey through the mist, hearing the thunderous roar of water as it falls around you and your family.

I loved taking the Maid of the Mist, and couldn’t stop smiling.

We definitely got wet, so wearing the rain poncho they give you, is a must. I also recommend wearing either short sleeves or a rain jacket under the poncho, as the wind blows the sleeves up and your arms get wet.

My feet also got soaked, so consider that when choosing your footwear for the boat ride, and pack extra, dry clothes, socks & shoes in a waterproof bag (or your car).

OPEN : Seasonally, usually beginning of April to first Sunday in November.

BEST VIEWS: Our captain recommended the lower level, front left side for the best & closest views (but it was extra wet, but super fun anyway).

Views of Niagara Falls in Canada

What I think is especially great about Niagara Falls Canada is you can view the Falls for free at the Table Rock Welcome Centre , day or night.

For a close up view, head on a Journey Behind the Falls . Descend 125 feet by elevator to take in the awesome power of 2,800 cubic meters of water / second falling overhead.

Parking can be a bit of a challenge so I recommend checking out info on parking lots close before you go.

Hornblower Cruises

Canada’s answer to the Maid of the Mist is their Hornblower Niagra Cruises . These boat tours offer spectacular views of all three falls, and the Niagara Gorge. You will get wet so plan accordingly. Take the first boat for less crowds.

For a unique experience, take a cruise after sunset to see the mist and falls all lit up.

Or grab a jet boat tour of exciting rapids and beautiful scenery along Niagara River.

Skylon Tower Observation Deck

For epic photos during the day, and Niagara Falls vistas at night visit the Skylon Tower Observation Deck .

You’ll travel 775 feet (236 meters) above the falls in a glass-enclosed elevator—‘Ride to the Top’. Enjoy a meal and take those instagram worthy photos of Horseshoe and American Falls, the Great Gorge, and Niagara River.

The Great Gorge Scenic Overlook hike is well-traversed by people of all ages, making it a family-friendly level that still provides both fun and views. At one hour long, we think it’s also the perfect brief outing for families with young children.

If you’re visiting the falls with very young children and are worried about having options available to you, worry no more. It’s a short drive from Niagara Falls State Park.

This option is a great choice for history buffs and offers a mix of history and drama to make this educational experience engaging and fun for visitors of all ages. 

The fort is over 300 years old and originally served the interests of New France in the mid-late 1600s. There are exhibits with authentic artifacts from the time and reenactors to help make it a fun, family-friendly experience.

Fort Niagara is about  a half hour drive from Niagara Falls.

The Aquarium of Niagara is in the Niagara Falls area of New York and offers much more than just views of marine animals (although they certainly have a lot of that, too!) 

The Aquarium of Niagara has lots of penguins, rescued seals, sharks, and rays for people to enjoy.

Every family needs something to get the kids nice and tired by the end of the day. For that, there’s no better option in the Niagara Falls area than the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark . 

This waterpark is on the Canadian side of the falls. It features three acres of 16 waterslides and a huge wave pool for the kids.

We found it to be one of the largest waterparks we’ve ever visited. Not only that, but there are some more fast-paced extreme water slides for parents, as well. I wasn’t that brave.

How to Plan an Adventurous Niagara Falls Road Trip

If you love waterfalls and vineyards, then you should start planning a Niagara Falls road trip! I remember visiting here for the first time as a kid, marveling at the sheer amazement of the power of Niagara Falls. Returning as an adult, coming here still brings up those same powerful feelings of wonder and awe.

Over the years, I’ve made countless road trips to Niagara falls with friends, boyfriends, and family. It’s a quintessential Canadian road trip that makes for a perfect day trip or weekend getaway. This Niagara Falls road trip planner has everything you need to know about visiting this world wonder!

Toronto to Niagara Falls Road Trip

Niagara Falls is just 128 KM from Toronto , but it’s likely going to take you at least two hours to drive to Niagara Falls because traffic leaving Toronto is notoriously awful. So if you can, avoid driving to Niagara Falls between 7-10 am or 3-6 pm. You’ll end up saving so much time.

If you don’t have your own car, regular bus tours run there from Toronto. You can also book a ticket with Busbud.

If you’re looking for places to stop on the way to Niagara Falls from Toronto, you could make a detour in Hamilton. It’s known as the world capital of waterfalls with over 100 that you can see hiking the Bruce Trail, so this is a great place to stop for nature lovers!

From Hamilton, it’s just an hour’s drive to Niagara Falls.

Things to do in Niagara Falls: Adventure Activities

Niagara Falls is a city in Ontario, Canada, but across the border/river, there is Niagara Falls, New York. Confusing! For this article, I’m going to focus on the best things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada, since this is where I’ve spent most of my time.

If you are coming from the American side – you can get to Canada in ten minutes by following the rainbow bridge. Just remember your passport!

Marvel at the Wonder of Niagara Falls

One of the best things to do on a Niagara Falls road trip is to go and marvel at this world wonder. There are three different waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls ( the Canadian Falls), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

The cool thing about visiting from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is that you can see all three waterfalls at once – not to brag or anything.

Every evening beginning at sunset, Niagara Falls is transformed into an incredible, multi-colored water and light masterpiece. You can see the falls illumination schedule for the year here.

During the summer, they also put on regular fireworks which make it even more magical. It can get hectic around this time, so you’ll want to arrive early (around sunset) to secure a spot.

Although I’ve since seen many other world-wonder waterfalls , including Iguazu Falls in Argentina and Victoria Falls in Zambia , Niagara Falls is still one of my favorites.

While the falls are lovely to look at it (and free to visit), you wouldn’t expect me to leave it at that. This is an adventure travel blog after all!

Here are some ways you can truly experience the wonder of Niagara Falls, inside and out.

Niagara Hornblower Cruise – Voyage to the Falls

The Niagara Hornblower Cruise , or as I fondly remember it the Maiden of the Mist, is a boat cruise that takes you up close and personal with horseshoe falls.

It’s a 20-minute journey and you can expect to get very, very wet. Don’t worry, they provide ponchos! It’s so much fun to feel the spray of this powerful waterfall.

Go on a helicopter tour of Niagara Falls

Riding a helicopter is truly a remarkable way to see a waterfall. I took a helicopter over Victoria Falls, Zambia , and the birds-eye view was unlike anything else I’ve experienced – you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

You can do the same at Niagara Falls by taking a helicopter ride which will give you epic views of the waterfall and surrounding region.

Zip-line over the falls

If you want a quick dose of adrenaline, take a zip-lining tour over the falls . Starting at 67m high, you’ll soar right past the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls on the left, then land on the observation deck at the base of Horseshoe Falls with speeds up to 70 kph+.

The entire experience takes about 60 seconds. While not as long as some of the epic zip line adventures in Costa Rica , it’s a pretty memorable way to see Niagara Falls.

Journey Behind the Falls

You’ve flown above it, you’ve gotten next to it, what else could there possibly be left to do?

Get behind it!

Yes, it’s possible with this very cool tour.

The experience starts with a 125 ft descent down an elevator where you’ll land behind horseshoe falls.

You’ll then walk through 130-year-old tunnels in the bedrock, coming out on an observation deck right next to the falls where you can witness them in all their glory.

Jet Boat through the River

Ride an open-air jet boat through Niagara Falls class five rapids. While scenic, don’t expect a relaxing ride. These boats cut through the water at high speeds, which will leave you soaking wet. Although not as wet as I was after river rafting class five rapids on the Zambezi River in Zambia!

Can’t decide which adventure you want to go on? Do multiple of them! On this epic half-day tour, you’ll get to ride the Hornblower Niagara Cruise, descend 125 feet underground and explore the tunnels below the Horseshoe Falls at the Journey Behind the Falls, and ride on the yellow bug elevators at Skylon Tower to enjoy a breathtaking vista!

Relaxing Things to do on a Road Trip to Niagara Falls

While the waterfalls are the main attraction in the Niagara region, there are a few other ways to enjoy the nature of this area.

Butterfly Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

Visit the Butterfly Conservatory and you can feel like you’re walking through a rainforest. This climate-controlled room is full of thousands of butterflies that will most likely land on you. They like human sweat; it’s weird.

Next to the butterfly conservatory is a beautiful botanical garden where you can stroll around and admire the gorgeous flora and fauna.

Hike or Rock Climb on Niagara Glen Nature Reserve

Just a few km away from Niagara Falls is the stunning Niagara Glen Nature reserve. This is the perfect spot to go day-hiking with several trails that overlook the whirlpool on the Niagara River.

Niagara Glen Nature reserve is also a great place to go rock climbing. Bring your own crash pad as there are many bouldering spots along the escarpment.

The best part about the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve is that it’s completely free to visit, which you may appreciate after a night at the casino.

Bike through Vineyards at Niagara-on-the-lake

Niagara Falls is part of the greater Niagara Region, which includes Niagara on the Lake. It’s a well-known wine-producing region, so taking a wine tour is the perfect thing to do here.

The easiest way to get to Niagara on the Lake is by driving; it’s just a half-hour drive from Niagara Falls. As you leave behind the falls, you can see the landscape change from the Niagara escarpment into the stunning vineyards of Niagra on the Lake. If you don’t have your own car, you can join a guided wine tour.

After visiting the vineyards, take a stroll into the town of Niagara on the Lake. It’s super cute and has some great restaurants for eating out! There are also many B&B’s and hotels to stay in Niagara on the Lake.

Eating and Drinking in Niagara Falls

The hub of nightlife in Niagara Falls is around Clifton Street. It attempts to be like a mini-vegas, with casinos for adults and arcade palaces galore for kids. That said, if you take it for what it is, Clifton street can be an enjoyable time, especially with a group of friends.

There is a Ferris Wheel on Clifton street which you can go on for some lovely views.

While we were walking the streets the night before my birthday, my friend sneakingly bought tickets for us to take the Ferris wheel at midnight. There’s just something perfect about turning a year older on top of a Ferris wheel; I recommend it if you happen to be there on your birthday!

You can drink inside the casinos, and there are clubs to go out to afterward. But to be honest, I didn’t find any of them particularly impressive. If you’re a craft beer lover, check out Niagara Brewing Company on Clifton street.

Best Restaurants in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has an eclectic restaurant scene where you can get food from about any region in the world. Napoli Ristorante Pizzeria has delicious pizza and fresh pasta, while the Kasbah serves delicious farm-to-table Mediterranean food, including vegetarian options.

If you’re looking for a restaurant with good food and a view of the falls, then check out the Rainbow Room in Crown Plaza. IHOP also has an excellent view of the falls, but remember that you will be paying for that view in the food price!

The only bummer about celebrating a birthday in Niagara is that many businesses don’t honor the free birthday gifts they usually give you (I’m looking at you, Boston Pizza). If you happen to be in Niagara on your birthday, Denny’s does provide complimentary breakfast.

If you want a sweet treat, hit up Sweet Jesus for a delicious Ice Cream cone.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has a ton of accommodation options for all budgets. If you’re looking for one with a great view, check out Marriott on the falls . My ex brought me here to ask me to be his girlfriend, and it was pretty swoon-worthy. In the end, we weren’t a great match, but it was a very romantic weekend!

Other hotels in Niagara Falls known for their views are Raddison Niagara Falls, Hilton Niagara Falls, and Sheraton on the Falls. While these are all big-name hotels, you can score surprisingly good deals, especially if you are traveling during the off-season or in the week.

Another way to save money on accommodation/tours in Niagara Falls is to buy a package on Groupon. Even though these seem marketed towards couples, I recommend doing this with a friend.

On my 28th birthday, me and a friend bought a Groupon and set off for a romantic night at the falls. We got a sweet hotel room at the Travelodge with a heart-shaped hot tub; it even came with a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine. It was cheesy AF and the perfect way to turn 28.

Best Time to Road Trip Niagara Falls

The falls can be visited year-round, but the most popular is during the summer (June-September). This is when Ontario gets its best weather, so it’s a good time to enjoy the outdoor adventure activities. However, it’s also when the falls will be most crowded.

That said, visiting Niagara Falls is one of my favorite things to do in Toronto in the summertime.

I’ve visited the falls during winter and still enjoyed it. They were half frozen, which was pretty magical to see. Although it was cold, the fact that the hotels were half the price and there were hardly any other tourists made up for it. It’s one of the best places to go in Ontario in winter!

Just note that the weather can be unpredictable in Canada during the winter , which may delay your plans and driving time.

I’ve also been to Niagara Falls in spring/fall and experienced similarly low prices and fewer crowds. Fall is a beautiful time to visit because you can see the leaves change color, which is perfect if you want to go hiking around the Niagara Glen area.

Getting Around Niagara Falls

If you’re staying in downtown Niagara Falls , you will be able to walk almost everywhere, as this is where many of the top attractions are. A WEGO Bus can take you to the major attractions if you don’t want to walk. Niagara on the Lake is about half an hour away, but tours will take you there if you don’t have a car.

How Long to Spend in Niagara Falls + Sample Itinerary

While you can drive to Niagara Falls as a day trip from Toronto , t here’s so much to do here that I would spend at least a night, and ideally a weekend.

As a sample weekend itinerary, you could drive up to Niagara Falls from Toronto on a Friday night and spend that evening exploring Clifton Street and watching the nightly light show on the falls. The next day, set off for a day of adventure at the falls. You could zip-line, take a boat cruise, and Journey behind the falls all in one day. At night, enjoy dinner with a view at one of the cities restaurants.

The next day, check out of your hotel and head out to visit the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve for a light hike, then visit Niagara on the Lake for a winery tour. Return to Toronto that evening, feeling satisfied with a weekend of adventure.

There’s something truly magical about standing at the edge of one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders, Niagara Falls. The thundering rush of water, the mist that kisses your skin, and the sheer power of nature’s spectacle – it’s an experience that leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of adults and children alike. But when you’re planning a visit to this destination with little ones in tow, the information out there can be confusing. Today, Amy Eastin , Kansas City mom of three, is sharing her family’s most recent trip to Niagara Falls with kids. This post is filled with tips, advice, and recommendations to ensure that your trip is not only awe-inspiring but also as smooth as the waters of the falls themselves.

Planning a trip to Niagara Falls with kids

Niagara Falls is one of the most iconic natural wonders on Earth. It’s a spectacular display of the raw power and beauty of nature. Located on the border between the United States and Canada, this awe-inspiring phenomenon is formed by the Niagara River, which connects the Great Lakes of Erie and Ontario. As the river rushes over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, it plummets in a breathtaking cascade, creating three majestic waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls.

What makes Niagara Falls an irresistible tourist destination is its sheer magnificence. The deafening roar of the cascading waters, the thick mist that envelops visitors, and the mesmerizing play of colors as the sun reflects off the falls all combine to create an otherworldly experience.

The falls are not only a visual feast but also a testament to the geological and hydrological forces that have shaped our planet. Visitors can get up close on boat tours, walk along scenic viewpoints, and explore various attractions in the surrounding area. The Niagara region offers a harmonious blend of natural grandeur, outdoor activities, and cultural attractions, making it a must-visit destination for travelers from around the world.

Which side of Niagara Falls should you visit?

There are two cities called Niagara Falls. One is in New York state, and the other is in Ontario, Canada.  Experiencing Niagara Falls from the New York side and the Canadian side offers distinct yet equally breathtaking perspectives of this natural wonder.

On the US side, visitors get views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls up close, allowing for an intimate connection with the falls’ raw power and misty embrace. Goat Island is a small island located in the Niagara River, within Niagara Falls State Park in Niagara Falls, New York, between the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Goat Islandis a destination for tourists visiting the falls on the U.S. side. It has several viewing points, including from Terrapin Point. Goat Island is connected to the U.S. mainland by two bridges that carry foot, car, and trackless train traffic, and to the smaller Luna Island by a pedestrian bridge. Goat Island is largely wooded and is interlaced with foot trails. The Cave of the Winds tour elevator provides access down to the foot of the falls.

On the Canadian side of the falls, the Horseshoe Falls takes center stage, providing a sweeping, panoramic view that showcases the grandeur and vastness of Niagara Falls. The Canadian side also boasts a lively promenade, vibrant gardens, and an array of attractions that offer a different kind of experience, including a stunning illuminated night view.

While both sides offer unique and unforgettable encounters with the falls, the American side showcases the falls’ intensity, while the Canadian side offers a broader, postcard-perfect perspective, making it no wonder that many travelers choose to explore both sides to appreciate the full spectrum of this natural marvel. If you want to experience both sides, the Rainbow Bridge is located between the cities of Niagara Falls, Canada and Niagara Falls, NY. Crossing the bridge costs $5.00 for a vehicle, or pedestrians can cross for $1.00.

We chose to stay on the Canadian side, so for this article, I am providing information about things you can do in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. 

Viewing the falls

You can’t go to Niagara Falls and not see the falls themselves. While there’s lots more to do in the area, this is the main attraction! 

Viewing and experiencing Niagara Falls for the first time is nothing short of a sensory overload and a profound encounter with nature’s grandeur. As you approach the falls, a distant rumble gradually transforms into a thunderous roar that reverberates through the air. The mist, carrying with it the faint scent of fresh water fills the air and settles on your skin.

When the falls finally come into view, there’s an almost instinctual gasp as you witness the sheer power and magnificence of this natural wonder. The towering columns of water, their brilliant whites contrasting against the deep blues of the Niagara River, are awe-inspiring. 

There is a long stretch of viewing areas along the river going up to the falls themselves called the Fallsview Trail. The upper part of the falls are called Horseshoe Falls, and nearby are the smaller, but no less grand, American Falls. 

Niagara Falls USA Observation Tower provides the only panoramic view of all three Niagara Falls, including the American Falls.

Niagara Falls at night

Viewing Niagara Falls at night, when the waters are artfully illuminated by lights, is a magical experience that adds an entirely new dimension to your visit. As the sun sets and darkness descends, the falls become a canvas of radiant colors, with ever-changing hues that dance across the water’s surface. 

To make this experience even more extraordinary, fireworks displays light up the night sky, casting a vivid, explosive contrast against the gentle, flowing beauty of the falls.

Every night from mid-May through Canadian Thanksgiving, fireworks are shot off over Horseshoe Falls. Fireworks start at 10 p.m. People start arriving around 9 p.m. to get a good spot. If it is a weekend or the summer, I recommend getting there early if you want to be in the front row. 

The combination of illuminated falls and dazzling fireworks turns the Niagara night into a truly enchanting and unforgettable sensory feast, evoking a sense of wonder and awe that remains etched in the memory of all who witness it.  If you’d like to see the falls lit up without the crowds, wait until 10:30 p.m. when the fireworks crowd clears out.

Families planning a visit to Niagara Falls should consider a boat tour. Seeing the falls from a boat tour gives you such a unique and up-close perspective of the falls. It’s an experience that’s not only exhilarating but also educational. The boats take visitors right to the base of the falls, where the sheer power and majestic beauty of the cascading waters are awe-inspiring. No wonder that boat tours are the most popular thing to do in Niagara Falls. 

After viewing the falls from land, we couldn’t wait to do a boat tour. We rode with  Niagara City Cruises . Tickets for tours are sold in half-hour time slots. I recommend getting your tickets early if you have a specific time you would like to take the tour. The tours take 20 minutes and run all day during the busy season. Because the tours are so short, even the littlest kids can handle the tour without getting too restless. 

To get to the boat, you will go down a ramp or stairs to an elevator (consider this if you’re traveling with a wheelchair or stroller). On your way out to the boat, you will be given a red poncho to put on. You will definitely want to wear this unless you want to look like you stepped out of the shower! They do have kid-sized ponchos available, but for little kids, it might be too long. We taught our daughters to walk like princesses holding their ponchos up with both hands so they didn’t trip. 

My kids were captivated by the thunderous roar of the falls, the mist that enveloped them, and the thrill of getting so close to the falls. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience, offering a unique opportunity for kids to connect with the powerful forces that shape our planet.

The boat is completely full of people with very little room to move around. We were lucky and were some of the first people on our boat, so we got a corner of the top deck. The boat leaves quickly and goes right up to the falls, so the spray of the water will completely cover you. Make sure anything you don’t want to get wet is safely stored under your poncho. After your tour, you discard your poncho and take the elevator back up. 

Tunnels under the falls

Another fun way to see the falls is by walking in tunnels underneath them at Journey Behind the Falls .

This is such a unique and immersive perspective. As you walk closer to the falls, you can feel the earth-shaking power of the cascading waters overhead. The thunderous roar of the water reverberates through the tunnels, and the dimly lit, misty atmosphere adds an element of mystery and adventure to the experience.

For the tour, there are reserved time slots, and they do sell out, so I recommend getting your tickets early online. When it’s your time to go, you will still have to wait in line. We waited for 45 minutes to an hour. Bring snacks and something for the kids because they will be bored. 

For this experience, you will also get a poncho. You will walk through underground tunnels to be directly behind the falls. All you will see is rushing water. There is another observation area where you get to walk out and stand at the base of the falls. The spray of the waterfall will get you very wet! The view and experience are similar to the boat ride, but it is less crowded, and you get to see the falls from a different view. 

Viewing Niagara Falls from a Ferris wheel

You can not only view Niagara Falls from below, but also from high above! Observing Niagara Falls from the top of the Niagara SkyView Ferris wheel gives you a breathtaking panoramic view of the falls and the surrounding landscape. 

My kids loved this. The wait was relatively short even though we were there during peak season. The slow rotation of the wheel allows ample time to soak in the magnificent vista, capturing the grandeur of Niagara Falls from a fresh perspective while adding an element of whimsy and delight to the experience. We rode it during the day, but you can take night rides too. Each family gets their own compartment which is nice. There is a speaker that plays music while you look out at the view. 

It’s a thrilling and unforgettable way to appreciate the falls and create lasting memories, offering a family-friendly adventure that will be cherished for years to come.

Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill, nestled in the heart of Niagara Falls, is a vibrant and whimsical entertainment district that beckons families with its unique blend of attractions and activities. The Clifton Hill area is brimming with colorful arcades, funhouses, miniature golf courses, and engaging museums. This area has tons of blinking lights, music, and interesting things to look at. The street is lined with arcades, play areas, carnival-type rides, restaurants, fair food, and more. It’s a place where fantasy comes to life, offering enchanting experiences such as the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, the immersive Butterfly Conservatory, and the spellbinding glow of the Dinosaur Adventure Golf.

Families can also enjoy delicious treats, ice cream, and various cuisines at the many restaurants and eateries, ensuring that both young and old are well-fed and entertained. With its lively atmosphere and an array of child-friendly options, Clifton Hill promises unforgettable family moments and is an essential stop for anyone exploring the wonders of Niagara Falls with kids.

We spent an afternoon exploring Clifton Hill. We got churros as we walked around. My kids loved all colors and decorations and begged to do every activity. We went to an arcade both nights we were in Niagara Falls, and we completed the Mystery Maze . 

A quiet place to relax

We usually travel to places filled with nature and lots of open green spaces, like state and national parks. While our kids truly enjoyed everything there was to do in Niagara Falls, they also got overwhelmed by all the chaos, lights, music, and people.

Luckily, we found a cute garden close to the falls where they could explore and be in nature with very few people nearby. The Oakes Garden Theater is a beautiful, low-key outdoor area. My kids enjoyed finding a geocache there as well. 

If you’re like us and crave solace, check out serene parks in the Niagara Falls area like Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side. This lush, meticulously landscaped area offers not only a peaceful retreat from the bustling crowds but also the perfect setting for a picnic or leisurely stroll. In these green oases, you’ll find respite from the excitement, a moment to reflect, and a chance to connect with nature, making your exploration of Niagara Falls a truly balanced and rejuvenating experience.

The Niagara Whirlpool

The Niagara Whirlpool is a natural marvel created by the force of the Niagara River, located just a short distance downstream from Niagara Falls. It forms where the river narrows, creating a natural bottleneck that leads to a dramatic change in water flow, speed, and direction. This abrupt shift results in a powerful whirlpool. The Whirlpool is encircled by a striking gorge with cliffs rising to heights of over 300 feet, offering visitors a spectacular and unique vantage point. 

While it may not receive as much fanfare as the adjacent Niagara Falls, it’s an awe-inspiring experience. You can explore the area by hiking along the gorge rim, taking a cable car ride, or, for the more adventurous, descending into the gorge itself. The cable car spans the gorge, so you can ride suspended above it. It looks thrilling, and yet perfectly safe! 

We didn’t get a chance to visit it this time, but it’s on my list for our next visit. It’s a destination that complements a visit to Niagara Falls, providing a quieter, more contemplative, and equally impressive aspect of the region’s natural wonders.  

Niagara Falls bus system

There is a bus system for tourists called WEGO, that has three different lines and will take you to all of the major tourist destinations. We used WEGO one of the two days we were there, and it was very convenient.

It’s difficult for our three little kids to walk long distances or up the steep Clifton Hill. Getting the bus pass made the trip more enjoyable for my kids and us because we weren’t having to wait on their little legs. The system was easy to use and goes by most major hotels in the area.

If you like walking and saving money, skip it! But if you’re looking for convenience when you’re traveling as a family, then I would recommend it. 

Where to eat at Niagara Falls

Whether you’re looking for street food or sit-down restaurants, Clifton Hill has a ton of family-friendly eating options. 

Street food

There are lots of kiosks with portable food like ice cream, churros, popcorn, and corn on a stick. Your family will love all the snack foods and they make it easy to eat and walk around. 

Restaurants

There are lots of options for places to sit down and eat as well. Pasta, pizza, and burgers were popular options. We went to Rainforest Cafe one night, and my kids loved it! The restaurant is elaborately decorated with jungle plants from floor to ceiling. There are animatronic animals that move and make noises around the restaurant. Every 10-15 minutes, there is a “rainstorm” where the lights flicker, it gets dark, and there are sounds of thunder and rain. The portions were sizeable, and my kids loved the food. What kid complains about burgers and chicken nuggets? 

Where to stay at Niagara Falls

We stayed at the Skyline Hotel and Waterpark. This was a relatively affordable hotel with kid-friendly amenities, including an indoor water park (for extra $). It was very family-friendly, but it was also somewhat dated. Be prepared for mandatory fees added to the cost when you check in (about $50 CAD for our two nights). The hotel does have a bus stop and also is close to Clifton Hill and Niagara Falls if you want to walk. 

If you’re looking for an updated option, I suggest staying at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel , Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls , or Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites . All of these options also offer rooms with views of the falls, if you would like to view them from your hotel window. 

The best time to visit Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is beautiful any time of year, but the winter can be particularly cold. I recommend planning your trip for June, July, or August. The weather during the summer is usually in the upper 70s or low 80s, with 7-8 days of rain a month.  The summer months, from June to August, are the most popular for tourists due to warm weather and extended daylight hours. This is the prime time for boat tours and outdoor activities, but it can be crowded. If you go during the summer, I recommend avoiding the week leading up to Canada Day and the weekends if you can. 

Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) offer milder weather, beautiful foliage, and fewer crowds, making them excellent options for a more relaxed visit. For those who appreciate the serenity of a winter wonderland, the off-peak season from November to March showcases the falls adorned with ice formations, and it’s an ideal time for tranquility and unique photo opportunities. Ultimately, the choice of the best time to visit Niagara Falls hinges on your individual preferences, whether you seek vibrant summer energy, the colors of autumn, or the quiet enchantment of winter.

O ne of the seven natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls is likely on the bucket list of most families . Regardless of whether you spend time exploring Niagara Falls from Niagara Falls NY or Niagara Falls, Ontario it’s still incredibly impressive.

But families planning a visit to Niagara Falls might wonder: Is it better to explore Niagara Falls New York vs Canada or the other way around?

We wondered that ourselves. So we put Trekaroo writers and contributors to work to determine the best vantage point for viewing this amazing natural wonder! Here’s everything you need to know about choosing where to see Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls New York vs. Canada

Getting to niagara falls.

The four westernmost Great Lakes feed into the Niagara River before heading over the falls and eventually into Lake Ontario. The falls drop a crazy amount of water- 681,750 gallons per second flowing over Horseshoe Falls to be precise. Falling at speeds of 32 feet per second and creating 2,509 tons of force, visiting Niagara Falls is an experience your family won’t ever forget.

From the United States side, getting to Niagara Falls NY is a breeze. Buffalo, NY is only 19 miles from Niagara Falls State Park . From the Canadian side, getting there is a bit trickier. Renting a car and driving this distance is pretty simple. Many families from the Canadian side choose to take tour buses that pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel.

My family LOVED our tour with King Tours in Toronto . They picked us up and returned us directly to our hotel room; we explored the Falls, visited nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake, and even went wine tasting. The kids made friends on the bus and mom and dad loved not having to drive back in Toronto traffic. Check out King Tours when making your tour reservation .

Winner – Niagara Falls New York . Getting to and from the Falls is much quicker on the US side, plus, you can squeeze in a visit to Fort Niagara- a 300-year-old US fort.

Niagara Falls New York vs Canada- Boat Ride to the Falls

No matter which side of the border you are on, boat tours are offered that take families to all three falls (Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil). This experience is one that can’t be missed! There is nothing like feeling the “mist” of the water encompassing everything all around you. It is a family-travel memory I will honestly never forget.

Niagara City Cruises operates on the Canadian side while Maid of the Mist has been offering tours on the American side since the 1800s. Both tours include ponchos.

Tours are 20 minutes long and both tours operate seasonally (typically April-November). Niagara City Cruises typically extends its season through the end of November. Prices are similar, and both operators offer similar package deals.

Niagara Falls New York vs. Canada- Best View of the Falls and How to Walk There!

Both the US and Canadian sides of the Falls offer a Journey Behind the Falls walking tour , an additional option for those looking to get up close to the falls. Both also feature spectacular views of the falls up close. The panoramic views on each tour are very similar, with rock cutouts behind Horseshoe Falls and observation decks to view from water level (and get soaked upon!).

The US boasts another tour, Cave of the Winds , which oddly enough doesn’t go through any caves. This walking tour takes families down 175 feet to the “Hurricane Deck” next to Bridal Veil Falls. This tour is the closest (and wettest) you’ll get to the Falls on foot. They even provide souvenir sandals so your shoes don’t get soaked!

Although most visitors to the area come for the boat and walking tours, there are quite a few other things to do while visiting the Falls.

Things to Do in Nature Niagara Falls, NY

On the New York side, exploring the Falls is all about nature. As part of Niagara Falls State Park , one of the oldest state parks in the US, families can explore the history of the region while discovering the waterfalls themselves.

The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center teaches kids about the geology of the region, including fossils and formations. Kids will love the rock climbing wall and hands-on displays. Marked hikes throughout the park take families past the ruins of the first hydroelectric station, as well as the opportunity to scramble over boulders.

The Adventure Theater , located in the state park visitor center, screens showings of “ Niagara: Miracles, Myths & Magic,” showcasing the history of the Falls. The Niagara Aquarium boasts more than 1500 aquatic animals!

Things to Do in Niagara Falls, Canada

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls, situated in the city of Clifton Hill, is all about adventure. Adrenaline junkies won’t want to miss attractions including WildPlay’s Niagara Falls Zipline to the Falls, a 2,200 foot zipline past the American Falls to the base of Horseshoe Falls.

They also shouldn’t skip the WildPlay Whirlpool Adventure Course suspended above views of the Niagara River. The White Water Walk showcases the power of the water as you tour the river on boardwalks that showcase the Whirlpool Rapids. The Whirlpool Aero Car , which is over 100 years old, suspends families over the Whirlpool rapids in antique style.

Additional Canadian-side attractions include the Butterfly Conservatory , Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens , the Floral Clock , Niagara’s Fury – a  360-degree 4D theatre that showcases the power and history of the Falls, golf, hiking in the nature center, observation tower, and of course, the casinos. Restaurants & Shopping in Niagara Falls

Both sides of Niagara Falls offer a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities. On the Canadian side, visitors will find fast food restaurants, family-friendly chains (like the Hard Rock and Rainforest Cafe), casinos, buffets, and lots of souvenir shopping.

The water’s edge along the New York side is actually a state park. The US side feels quite a bit more natural than its neighbor . Just outside the park grounds in the US sits a wealth of restaurants and shopping opportunities. (Another Hard Rock Cafe sits on the American side should you really need to get a pin or t-shirt!)

Want to get fancy? Book a reservation at a restaurant with views of the Falls . The Canadian side boasts a slew of them, including the rotating views at Skylon Tower which sits 775 feet above the Falls. The Keg Steakhouse & Bar,   Table Rock House Restaurant, and Morton’s Grille are also good options.

Winner – Niagara Falls New York. Although we like the options on the Canadian side, we love the natural focus in the US; there are still plenty of restaurants and options for shopping and snacking, but you won’t feel like you are in a tourist trap.

Hotels Near Niagara Falls

On the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, there are plenty of options for families. From kid-friendly resorts like Trekaroo family-favorite Great Wolf Lodge to  Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls with impressive views, there is a wide variety of hotel options near the falls and right in the action. The hotel options on the US side of the falls are a bit less plentiful but still diverse. Options include favorite chains like Holiday Inn , DoubleTree by Hilton , Sheraton and Comfort Inn .

The Niagara Falls Adventure Pass offers three bundles, depending on the activities you hope to do. All passes include WeGo bus passes; visitors can then select attractions based on their interests including nature, classic tours, and plus, which allows admission to nearly everything.

Tips on Crossing the Border at Niagara Falls

If you still can’t decide which side of the falls to see, you could always see both. There are a few options for crossing the border:

Driving across the border:  You can drive across the border at Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge (Nexus only), and Lewiston Queenston Bridge.

Trekaroo Tip: Single parents will need a certified letter with permission to cross the border without both parents. If you are caravanning, be sure your kids are in your own vehicle at the border.

Walking across the border: You can also walk or bike across the border on the Rainbow Bridge, a fun option if you don’t want to wait in a line of cars. The same passport rules apply.

I live in Tampa and I'm trying to plan my son's 18th birthday in October. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Here are my questions:

Do you like touristy stuff? and/or want a falls view hotel? Head to the Canadian side.

If you are staying in Niagara Falls, ON, rent a car to cross the border. You can also rent a car if you want to see Buffalo or any other areas. There is a lot in the region so would have to know more of interests.

Not only is there more to see and do on the Canadian side, but just about every view of the Falls that YOU have seen, has been from the Canadian side.

If you plan to cross the border, make sure you have passports and a credit card without international fees. If you are paying cash for anything, you should convert USD to CAD but the credit card will give the best exchange rate.

Jaide: how much warmer is the NY side than the Canada side? We are only talking under a mile apart?

There are two cities named Niagara Falls. On the American side, there is Niagara Falls in the state of New York, and on the Canadian side is Niagara Falls in the province of Ontario. The two cities are separated by the Niagara River.

The question is what airport would be the most convenient to visit Niagara Falls - the focus of this forum.
