Gay Puerto Vallarta, Mexico | The Essentian LGBT Travel Guide!

Posted on Last updated: December 3, 2023

Categories Gay Destinations , North America

Gay Puerto Vallarta, Mexico | The Essentian LGBT Travel Guide!

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Hugging the twinkling blue Bahía de Banderas and backed by verdant palm-covered Sierra Madre mountains, Gay Puerto Vallarta is one of the world’s most famous gay destinations!

A small city with astounding sandy beaches, boutique shopping, world-class dining and a tantalizing malecón (boardwalk), it’s no wonder the gays have made this their home! Puerto Vallarta first burst upon the international jet set scene after the filming of the “Night of the Iguana” with Liz Taylor, but it was not until the 90s that an LGBT industry popped up after the opening of the “Club Paco Paco”.

While originally there was some local resistance,  this success spurred to life an entire gay village which continues to grow even today as other traditional gay beach destinations wane – like Mykonos , Key West , Palm Springs , and Fire Island.

There is no shortage of epic gay clubs, laid-back cocktail bars, gay hotels, or sexy hombre in the Zona Romantico, Puerto Vallarta’s Gay District – but today, LGBT travelers will be welcomed almost everywhere in this tolerant and gay-friendly beachside town.

In fact, Mexico, in general, is becoming increasingly gay-friendly as long-ingrained cultural mindsets change, as evidenced by the bustling gay scene in cities like Guadalajara , Monterrey , Queretaro , and Puebla.

Affordable luxury, your global queer family, tropical heat, and wild nightlife are just some of the highlights of Gay Puerto Vallarta, but there are many, many more. After all, there must be a reason why so gay travelers return here year after year after year…

Are you relocating?  This guide will help travelers discover the queerer side of the city. However, if you are lucky enough to be considering a move here, we recommend getting in touch with a local gay realtor. They can happily give you no-obligation advice and all the information you'll ever need to know about your new city. And if you then want their help to find your dream home, you are guaranteed fair, equal, and honest representation. No surprises or awkward conversations necessary!

Those looking for wild nightlife will not be disappointed by Gay Puerto Vallarta – and just need to head to the Zona Romantico, where all the gay bars and clubs are located. Expect plenty of sexy strippers, affordable drinks, and epic music that tempts you to dance until sunrise.

Most bars and clubs are packed from midnight until the early morning, with a mix of tourists and a few locals. Just stay safe, leave any valuables at home and catch ride-shares or taxis between your accommodation and different venues late at night.

Gay strip clubs worldwide are not too common -and Wet dreams are much cheaper than those in Fort Lauderdale or Paris.

Antropology

The longest-running gay strip club in Puerto Vallarta, and still one of the most popular. If you have pesos to splash, why not treat yourself to a lap dance from the sexiest muscle boys in Mexico? A playground of everything naughty, sweet, fun, Latino and oh-so-gorgeous.

A gay club spread over three levels with a rooftop garden bar offering stunning views. Beloved by gay locals as the premier gay party spot with sexy go-go boys, circus acts and show tunes. A highlight of the Puerto Vallarta gayborhood, and our favorite gay club – not only thanks to the great value of a late-night happy hour, but because of the upscale vibes, frivolous drag show, and friendly service.

CC Slaughters PV

One of the busiest gay nightclubs in Puerto Vallarta with two busy dance floors, regular (and fabulous) drag shows and talented DJs playing techno/circuit music to keep the crowd happy until sunrise. Most active after 2 am, so don’t make the mistake of arriving early, with a fun mix of both locals and tourists.

Paco’s Ranch

Another extremely popular Puerto Vallarta gay club shows that Mexicans really know how to throw a party. Mostly frequented by local Puerto Vallarta gay boys, so except for cheaper drinks, and a mix of Spanish and English music – although there is a fun cowboy theme, you can find country music and free line dance lessons some nights.

There is a fun English drag show generally at one on the weekends and a Mexican show at 3, and go-go boys most nights.

Cruising & Gay Saunas  in Puerto Vallarta

Had enough of gay cruising in Puerto Vallarta – either in the bars or elsewhere? For those who want a bit more guaranteed action, there is now only one gay sauna in Puerto Vallarta, but it can get pretty busy. If you’re getting restless in Gay Puerto Vallarta, we also recommend using a hook-up app , though prostitution is legal in Mexico, and many guys work on hook-up apps such as Grindr or Hornet.

Playa Los Muertos is the unofficial gay beach in Puerto Vallarta, and just beyond that is the more private Playa Conchas Chinas.  You might also try the nearby Vallarta Cora Hotel with its cruisy bar and dark room, which is busy after sunset. No matter what you do, always stay safe.

Leave all valuables in your hotel safe and be extremely cautious before going to any local house. It is better to host at your hotel or visit the gay Puerto Vallarta sauna.

Club Spartacus

The only gay sauna in Puerto Vallarta, but it’s always full of hot and steamy jinx. Found in the Zona Romantica gay area of Puerto Vallarta, this 4,000 sq ft sauna complex is housed over four floors with a large rooftop terrace, pool and palapa thatched roof for sun lovers and nude sunbathing.

There is a dry sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi with massage jets, open showers, cubicles, locker and private rooms for your enjoyment – as well as a bar and male massage services. You will need to bring your ID and flip-flops. Things get busiest here after 7 pm whenever everyone finishes work.

Elizabeth Taylor Theatre

An XXX adult cinema is popular with gay, straight and bi guys. It is busy after work and on rainy days, being open from 2 – 10 pm daily. For the gay action, head to the steamy upper Mezzanine area – there is no air-conditioning here! How much action there is depends on the time and day.

Ulisses was recommended by a bunch of people, in a Facebook group I belong to. I arranged for airport transportation. He was so sweet, to wish me safe travels, as I was boarding my plane, in Las Vegas. Then, right on time, awaiting my arrival, at PVR. Professional, fun, and easy going guy, with great tips, and recommendations. So happy to see he's hosting tours and excursions, along with his services. While vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, seek out Uli, for your adventures, and allow yourself to see all that this beautiful city has to offer!

Jaisyn Mateo

We've been to many tours in Puerto Vallarta but this one was by far the best one. Some of the many highlights included snorkeling in the middle of the ocean and spending the day at the private beach, Ulises is a wonderful travel guide. He was there to help us every single step of the way, We are so looking forward to coming back next year.

Los Angeles, California

Ulises is a fantastic tour guide, he is local, informative and bilingual. He knows all the local stops and will take you to the best hidden gems in and around PV. Highly recommend!!

Ulises Mata

Hi, thanks for visiting BearsCruisingPV.com My name is Ulises and I am originally from Acapulco, Mexico. I moved to Denver when I was 22 years old where I spent 20 great years. When the time came to move back to Mexico, I knew where I wanted to go…beautiful Puerto Vallarta, the place I now call home. Between the friendly people, beautiful beaches, Pueblos Magícos, great food and culture, along with the most beautiful sunsets in the word, this community has welcomed me with open arms. Moving here was the best decision I’ve ever made and now I’m excited to share my experiences with new and old friends, my family and my “chosen family” to explore with you the amazing things I’ve seen. PV is much more than bars and beaches. PV is a true paradise with waterfalls, horseback riding, hidden beaches, zip lining all nearby. Let’s explore this magical place together and let meI show you what PV really has to offer. Thanks again for visiting. I can’t wait to show you MY Puerto Vallarta. -ULISES-

Gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico: The only LGBTQ guide you will need [2023]

January 2, 2023 January 2, 2023 by Samantha Fulmer

Gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico

This article may contain affiliate/compensated links. For full information, please see our disclaimer here.

Reminder: Make sure to check the country’s covid guidelines before travel.

My wife and I stumbled upon Puerto Vallarta while traveling around Mexico. We figured it was just another touristy beach town, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. We literally stumbled into a beautiful and accepting LGBTQ paradise! The locals are so kind to everyone which can be difficult as a lesbian couple to find places we truly feel welcome and safe but Puerto Vallarta immediately soared to the top of that list. We want to share with you all the best gay hotels, things to do, restaurants and bars to visit during your trip. This article will take you through gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico the only LGBTQ guide you will need!

Apparently, Puerto Vallarta has been a dreamy gay vacation destination for decades, especially for US and Canadian gay men. Why? It has a literal gayborhood filled with LGBTQ resorts, bars, shops, and parties. We loved this area so much we actually lived here for 4 months because we just couldn’t get enough! I will say, the lesbian population is quite small and you will see mainly gay men staying here BUT we hope by spreading the news so more of the LGBTQ population start vacationing here too!

IS PUERTO VALLARTA SAFE FOR LGBTQ VISITORS 2023?

YES! YES! Puerto Vallarta is very safe! Mexico gets a bad rep regarding safety but while you’re visiting you can relax and enjoy exploring the area. The main LGBTQ area is “Zona Romantica” which is where you’ll find the “gay beach” (I’ll explore this more), gay resorts, gay bars, and gay stores. This area is the main inspiration for this gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico article! We walked around at night, in the morning, drunk and sober, and never had an issue. The biggest question my wife and I have when planning a trip is how safe is it to walk around as a woman? We both walked around at night alone and never got catcalled or followed or approached by anyone creepy. Obviously, we still use caution and common sense (like not walking around blackout drunk) but can attest to the safety of this area!

ABOUT PUERTO VALLARTA MEXICO

What makes Puerto Vallarta such a safe haven for the LGBTQ community? Is it the non-stop parties? Is it the rainbow flags proudly flying all over the city? Is it the bars that exclusively cater to the community? Honestly, it’s all of the above. The city is so overwhelmingly open-minded and has embraced the LGBTQ community entirely. We felt so safe and excited to be here because everyone else is excited and the community is celebrated! We could walk around at night with no issues because there are so many other LGBTQ people walking around which is why we want to spill the tea on gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico!

QUICK INFORMATION ON PUERTO VALLARTA

Currency: Mexican Peso $1USD = $20 MXN

Electricity socket: Mexico uses the same sockets as in the USA

Visa: Once you arrive you are automatically given a 180-day visa to foreigners who enter Mexico. You will be given an entry card DO NOT lose this as it is your proof of entering the country legally. You will need to present this when you leave.

Airport: Puerto Vallarta International Airport.

Wifi: Speeds vary depending on your accommodation. We found that most Airbnb’s had slower internet because they are sharing one router across multiple units. Don’t worry though as there are plenty of cafes and workspaces in Puerto Vallarta with faster internet speeds.

Can you drink the water?

It depends on where you are staying. Be sure to ask once you check into your accommodation as to whether or not you can drink the water. We always pack a Steripen to save plastic. More restaurants used filtered water and ice but it’s always good to ask if you’re not sure.

What time of year do I go?

Puerto Vallarta is amazing to visit all year round. However, the weather does change throughout the year. If you visit during the summer (May-September) it is VERY HOT and is considered the rainy season. The trees are green and the surrounding hills look lush and beautiful but the humidity can be rough. Peak travel time for LGBTQ visitors is around Christmas or spring break. The weather is sunny and hot every single day. The ocean is warm enough to swim in as well!

How to get around Puerto Vallarta?

In Zona Romantica (the gay zone) you can easily walk everywhere, but if you need to get from the airport to your accommodation we suggest uber. It is very cheap. Just exit the airport and turn left and go across the bridge that goes over the highway then order an Uber. Much cheaper than dealing with the overpriced taxis (beware they are very aggressive when you are heading towards the door. Don’t mention you are getting an uber as they will harass you).

PUERTO VALLARTA DURING COVID

Puerto Vallarta has done a good job of enforcing mask mandates across businesses. Meaning upon entering you must wear a face mask, your temperature will be checked and you will be given hand sanitizer. While walking around the city you’ll find locals and tourists wearing their masks for the most part. Hotels have made getting a covid test very easy as a lot of hotels offer testing at the hotel that you can register for upon arrival in Puerto Vallarta.

WHERE TO TAKE A COVID TEST IN PUERTO VALLARTA

The best option (the one we have used several times) is the testing site located at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport. They are open 24/7 and you don’t need an appointment. The prices are much lower and if you get the Antigen test (rapid test) you’ll have your results within 45 minutes. Remember even if you are fully vaccinated you are still required to present a negative covid test. (As of 8/11/2021)

Remember if you are flying back to the US or Canada from Mexico it is required that you take a Covid test within 72 hours before traveling and show that negative test when checking in at the airport.

MEXICO LGBTQ RIGHTS

Like most countries, Mexico’s laws regarding LGBTQ marriage are still complicated. Mexico City along with 30+ other states recognize and perform legal marriages. These marriages are still recognized as legal across Mexico even in states where couples cannot marry legally. Puerto Vallarta is in the state of Jalisco and in 2016 LGBTQ marriage became legal.

The good news is even with most of the country having complicated views on LGBTQ marriage due to various cultural factors such as religion, Puerto Vallarta is the perfect LGBTQ oasis where you will be 100% embraced with open arms.

WHERE TO STAY IN GAY PUERTO VALLARTA MEXICO

Puerto Vallarta

While the entire city is LGBTQ-friendly, there is a specific area that hosts the most LGBTQ-specific accommodations, Zona Romantica. Let’s dive into the main gay Puerto Vallarta hotels, resorts, and hostels that we suggest:

  • Almar Resort This resort is a literally LGBTQ paradise. It is a high end adults only resort with a rooftop bar that hosts AMAZING drag shows with an incredible view, and also has a beach club that has a DJ, multiple pools and beachfront chairs on Playa de los Muertos which is the main beach. There are parties every single day making it the center of attention during Puerto Vallarta Pride week. If you are looking to be pampered then you’ll definitely want to stay here. Know that you need a higher budget to stay here, and if you aren’t looking to spend all your money being boujie then keep reading for some other great options.
  • Boana Torre Malibu This gay (but heterofriendly) Hotel/ condo combo could be the perfect accommodation for you! Courtney and I love having access to a kitchen so this is perfect! It also has a massive swimming pool that is usually packed by the afternoon. You will find tons of other LGBTQ couples staying here as well making it super easy to make new friends.
  • Sapphire Ocean Club Another amazing hotel that is beachfront and has a pool. This is a fun place to stay, drink and enjoy the beach or pool or you can even reserve a day pass here if your hotel isn’t beachfront and actually pay to enjoy the pool or beach chairs.
  • Blue Chairs Resort by the Sea Another iconic gay resort is blue chairs. Once you arrive at the blue chairs lined up on the beach you know you’ve made it to the “gay beach”. This resort has a rooftop bar and two pools that hosts various events like drag shows almost every night. This is the perfect place to meet new friends and enjoy the nightlife!
  • Amaria Villas If you are looking for an escape away from the city and into the mountains then you may want to check out Amaria Villas. When you arrive it seems innocent enough, but it can get wild here with clothing optional events, DJ parties that go into the early hours of the morning. Courtney and I went for a PV Pride event that was women’s only and it was a ton of fun!
  • Jets Gay Hostel A budget friendly, yet safe option for LGBTQ travelers. Located between Zona Romantica and Centro (central part of town where malecon is) is a great way to enjoy your vacation without blowing your bank account. While its budget friendly the interior is still beautiful and full of different activities and games to help make it easier to make friends while you’re in town.

LGBTQ FRIENDLY BARS, CLUBS AND RESTAURANTS IN PUERTO VALLARTA MEXICO

Lgbtq bars: .

Gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico has gay bars everywhere in Zona Romantica. From sophisticated cocktail bars to dive bars this list should help you find all the hot spots! The best part is that it is so easy to make new friends at all of these places because people are so friendly! Know that even if you don’t pick a gay-specific bar we found that anywhere we went in Puerto Vallarta was friendly!

  • Elixir Mixology Bar: This sophisticated cocktail bar is located in Zona Romantica and owned by two lesbians. While it isn’t listed as a lesbian bar it does host womxn events by the local group Pink and Proud . Courtney and I kept coming back to this place because all the cocktails are handcrafted and some of the best in the city.
  • La Noche is one of those bars that is packed out of the door at night. It is a mixed crowd and has GoGo dancers and a rooftop! You’ll find that La Noche is smack dab in the middle of all the gay action in Zona Romantica and it doesn’t usually close until after 3am.
  • Blondies: Okay, obsessed is an understatement BUT i love Blondies. There are two locations, one is a block away from the beach and the other is a few blocks back from the beach in Zona Romantica. It is a slushie bar that does to-go orders but also has an upstairs lounge area with a full bar. We have spent hours here day drinking, night drinking and just meeting new friends! If you want to get day drunk this is the best place to start (my favorite is the brassy blonde). Mixed crowd.
  • Mr. Flamingo: This beach themed bar is a must when visiting Puerto Vallarta. They have happy hour starting at 2pm and ending at 7pm and is a great place to pregame for your night out. It is located right next to all the popular spots like La Noche. At night this place gets packed out of the door because of its fun dance music. It is usually a mixed young crowd and doesn’t close until 4am.
  • CC Slaughters: This venue is split into a bar section in the front and a club section in the back. There is a mix of house music and pop/ rap hits between the bar and club section. This place can be as chill or wild as you want it to be. If you go earlier in the night it can be a chill way to pregame for the night, if you go late then it turns into a full on packed out club. This place is crazy and stays open until 6am. Mixed crowd.

LGBTQ clubs in Gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico:

  • Industry : A popular club in PV where there are shows with or without clothing depending on what section of the club you go to. This place has a lot of house music and is usually popping all night long but does tend to have a cover. It is right across from CC slaughters, La Noche and Mr. Flamingo. Mainly a male crowd.
  • Mr. Flamingo: After dark this is one of the most popular dance clubs in the area. You won’t find drag shows but you will find a packed house with people who just want to dance! Mixed crowd.
  • La Noche: Because it has 3 levels it is one of the top places to go in Puerto Vallarta for parties. Each floor has a different vibe, with the bottom floor hosting the GoGo dancers and drag queens. Mixed crowd.
  • Paco’s Ranch: Another nightclub right next to Mr. Flamingo with a cowboy theme. There are GoGo dancers most nights as well as English and Spanish drag shows. Its open from W-Sunday and doesn’t close until around 5am. Mainly a male crowd.
  • Blue Chairs: Rooftop bar hosts drag shows multiple times a week and it can stay open until 2am. Some of the drag shows get pretty…skimpy, I saw some hot dogs I wasn’t expecting but still had fun!
  • The Top Bar: Beautiful rooftop bar attached to the Almar Resort. Usually have some type of event every night including drag shows. The drinks are tasty and this is a perfect place to watch the sunset in PV. Usually closes at 12am which is when the party starts elsewhere! Follow them on instagram as they post the schedule of events for the week and sometimes month here.

LGBTQ BEACH IN PUERTO VALLARTA MEXICO

Sunset Puerto Vallarta

This guide is gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico so of course there is a gay beach! It is on the main beach (Playa de Los Muertos) but it is at the far end to the left heading towards the rock cliff. This area is where you’ll find a variety of places to sit, drink or stand, twerk and….still drink. Options include free chairs where you can sit and enjoy the chairs and umbrellas for free for the day as long as you buy something to boujie options where you pay a fee for the day. So let’s dive into all of them!

  • Mantamar Beach Club: You can miss it. You’ll see massive pools, lots of boys in speedos and blue chairs and umbrellas lining the beach. This is the place to go for a day party. You can pay to use the pool, listen to the DJ, use beach chairs and umbrellas as well but it will cost you around 400 pesos (at minimum) to enjoy this space.
  • Blue Chairs: Another beachfront spot with blue chairs to enjoy the beach scene and catch some rays. Check with the front desk to see what the fee is for the chairs per day.
  • Sapphire: Another awesome LGBTQ resort where you can rent chairs by the pool or on the beach. Prices start at 40 pesos per day! The food and drinks here are really awesome! Be sure to stop by a day in advance if possible as it does get booked up.
  • Ritmos: Nestled between Blue chairs and Mantamar this is your free beach chair option if you want to be next to the action but not pay for it. Even during pride we only paid 70 pesos per day for the chairs and honestly we loved it! Tons of other LGBTQ visitors hang out here too and the staff is really friendly. The food and drinks are priced well compared to Mantamar and Blue Chairs.

THINGS TO DO IN PUERTO VALLARTA

Mezcal y Sal cocktail

Puerto Vallarta is definitely a beach town, where you can sit, drink and tan all day, but in case you are looking for more, there is PLENTY to do outside of just hanging on the beach! We have put together our top picks because after living in Puerto Vallarta for 4 months we realized just how much there is to see and discover!

1. Discover local cuisine on a food tour

You’ll find that in most of our guides about Mexico one of the first things we tend to suggest is hopping on a Food Tour ! YES WE LOVE FOOD, but there is so much more to food tours than just finding out where to eat. You get a piece of Mexican culture when you go on these tours, it helps connect us to the town and country we are visiting.

2. Go on a LGTBQ catamaran tour

What is a trip to gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico without an LGBTQ catamaran tour with Diana’s Tours? While you’re on the beach you will probably see it heading out to sea with a massive rainbow flag! You can learn more about the surrounding area while enjoying an open bar! Definitely, a fun way to meet new people and see the beautiful landscape around Puerto Vallarta.

3. Explore Quimixto’s deserted beaches and jungle waterfall

passion fruit margarita on the beach

You can join a tour so you don’t have to worry about transportation to and from this beach and waterfall here or you can take an uber to Boca de Tomatlan it’s an easy 20-minute ride. Once you arrive there will be plenty of locals asking you to take their boat. Tell them you want to go to Quimixto beach and hop on the boat! Once you arrive you will be met with just two restaurants and a basically empty beach! You can hang out here all day and drink the best passion fruit margaritas or you can hike to the waterfall!

Looking back, we wish we would have done a tour just once so we could have a guide take us to the waterfall.

4. Explore Isla Marietas

If you are looking for adventure definitely check this tour out . Isla Marietas is a national park in the middle of the ocean. It is a small island that is surrounded by beautiful wildlife including tons of different species of fish and birds. You can snorkel through a tiny cave and spend a few minutes on the sandy beach for pictures. Know that this tour isn’t for the faint of heart as the water is chilly, the current is strong and it is quite the boat ride.

Many people ask why you can’t spend more time on the beach? Well, in recent years with the massive influx of tourists the government has regulated time on the beach to ensure it stays clean and safe for the wildlife.

If you aren’t interested in swimming to the beach you can take a different tour that goes around it and you can enjoy an open bar, snacks, kayaking, and more! We did this tour and loved it because we were able to see so many different types of animals we hadn’t seen just hanging out on the beach, like the blue-footed booby which can be seen at the Galapagos!

5. Whale watching

This is a MUST if you are in Puerto Vallarta during whale watching season (December-March). This was the most magical experience for both of us! There are so many different tours you can take. We chose to take a sailboat which was PERFECT. It moves slow but you can enjoy the ocean and see whales constantly! It is amazing to watch them jump.

If you are looking for more whale action you can even take a speed boat that gets very close to the whales and has technology that helps you listen to them underwater! Could not recommend this more.

6. Explore El Centro or Old Town

While we know Zona Romantica is the hub of gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico but Old Town is just a 15-minute walk from Zona Romantica and it gives you a different vibe, a more Mexican vibe. We stayed in this area for about a month and loved it! You can walk on the Malecon with the beach on one side and shops and restaurants on the other. You can explore the beautiful church and check out some great restaurants in the area like Cafe des Artistes and No Se Nada. Visiting this area gives you a chance to interact with locals and enjoy all that Puerto Vallarta has to offer!

WHAT TO PACK FOR PUERTO VALLARTA

Gay Puerto Vallarta Mexico is waiting for you! We have created an entire packing guide for Mexico so definitely check it out as it has tips and tricks you’ll need!

In summary, you can dress as fancy or as casual as you want! Puerto Vallarta is a very open-minded place where you’ll find boys in speedos to fancy dresses at dinner. Either way, you go, have fun with it, and check out some of the local boutique shops ran by Mexicans. They have some amazing clothes!

LGBT Vacations

Daylife, Tours & Activities

Gay Tour Calendar

You'll find plenty of ways to wait out the daytime until your next trip to the bars and discos.  During the daytime you might be inspired to do some shopping or browse through the many art galleries in Vallarta.  We have dedicated separate pages for those, so we won't repeat much about those ideas here.  Vallarta has many options for relaxation during the day including our gay beaches and many organized gay cruises and tours.  Unless your accommodations have satellite TV, the half dozen channels that are in English on the cable system here just might not do!  So, what else is there after TV in the daytime?  Part of the reason to visit the tropics is to enjoy the outdoor life that our climate makes possible.

puerto vallarta gay tours

In these beach clubs you'll find hundreds of gay men and women sitting under the palapas or on towels nearer the surf line, soaking up the hot Mexican sun and socializing with gays from all over the world.

Once at the beach you'll immediately come in contact with the many beach vendors, who are licensed and very territorial.   There are various things being sold, all by differing vendors, since there are separate licenses for each kind of item.  You'll be offered fruit, ice cream, fresh pies, newspapers, silver jewelry, clothing items, tickets to cruises and tours, Mexican blankets, and many more items.  This is the place to bargain, you should never pay the asking price, although even with great bargaining skills you won't get as good a price here as when you shop for these items away from the beach.  After a while it can get irritating to some, because these vendors keep coming around.  Our recommendation is to stay relaxed and get used to saying politely (but firmly) "no, gracias" and don't let it bother you.

The beach is easy to find, it is less than a quarter mile south of the pier located at the foot of Francisca Rodriguez Street.  The blue and green chairs are marked on our map (see map) .  In case your gaydar isn't working when you get there and you need help finding the place, the Blue Chairs flies a rainbow flag on top of their restaurant building.  If taking a taxi to the beach it is best to tell the driver "Blue Chairs - Los Muertos."

Best (gay-friendly!) things to do in in Puerto Vallarta

people on the beach next to tall building during daytime

Bikes and Bites Tour: This is a hybrid experience by Vallarta Food Eats Tours and one of my personal favorite things to do. ATV Tour: You can find many ATV tour providers in Puerto Vallarta. I personally prefer Wild Trek Adventures. I loved the Rancho Las Vegas tour. This tour really takes you outside the city and the best part, you get to stop for a tequila tasting. Pro Tip: Bring a face covering and do not drive/ride in the back of the pack... I think I coughed up dust for two days. Rhythms of the Night: This is a Cirque de Soleil-type show which includes a sunset boat ride and open bar. That said, this whole excursion takes about five hours. If you are someone who does not want to spend a whole night on one thing, this may not be the right choice. Wet & Wild Cruise: Do it once, just to say you did. This is a clothing-optional cruise, packed with like-minded travelers. They do have an open bar on board and they make a stop for a beach party. Pro Tip: Don't plan anything special for the night you go on this cruise. The drinks are strong and food is scarce. You will probably need a nap when you get back. Act 2: What a place... here you will find theater productions, celebrity drag tributes (think Dolly, Selina and Whitney), concerts and comedy shows. CC Slaughters: If you are up for some late-night dancing and great music, this is the place for you. Good times all around and one of (if not the largest) dance clubs in PV. Lastly, if festivals are city-wide parties are your thing... Make sure to check the dates and book early for world-class festivals such as Vallarta Pride and Beef Dip Bear Week.

Places to eat & drink in Puerto Vallarta

tables and chairs overlooking the ocean during sunset

You might come to Puerto Vallarta for the beaches, but this beautiful coastal town also has a thriving food scene. Here are some of my favorite gay-friendly restaurants & bars to enjoy while in PV.

Ocean Grill: This over-water beachfront restaurant off the beaten path is located on Los Colomitos Beach. To get here, you will need to head south from Puerto Vallarta to a small fishing village named Boca de Tomatlan. Once you arrive, a water taxi will take you to the restaurant. Don't forget to bring cash, the restaurant and water taxi do not accept cards. Pro Tip: They only offer three seating times a day, so reservations are required. La Cappella : I know, Italian food in Mexico isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Trust me, you will not regret going here. This open-air restaurant overlooking the city is a must-see. If you time it right, you can view one of the most amazing sunsets over Banderas Bay. El Dorado : With seating right on the water, you can't go wrong. El Dorado has fantastic seafood, sourced locally. Pro Tip: Order the Patron Espresso Martini. The Top Sky Bar : Located on the roof of Almar Resort, you can always find something going on here. Whether you are looking for good drinks, good food or great drag shows, you will find it here. Mantamar Beach Club : We stop here several times during a trip to PV. Located right on the beach, they have an amazing open terrace seating area, a large pool with cabanas, and a private full-service beach. Pro Tip: If you want to reserve a cabana by the pool, be prepared to spend some cash. Xocodiva Artisan Chocolate : Puerto Vallarta boasts many different shops to get artisan chocolate, but something about this place hits different. It is very much off-the-beaten-path and you may walk by it several times without knowing. I highly suggest seeking this place out. Pro Tip: Try the chili truffle. Blondie's Loft: I would say PV is not known for craft cocktails, but Blondie's seems to be changing things up. If you go upstairs to the loft, you will find a great martini and craft cocktail menu. Also, the design and atmosphere make this a fantastic happy hour spot before dinner. Mr. Flamingo: This is a hard one to explain, but trust me... go! The ultimate gay-friendly spot in Puerto Vallarta, Mr. Flamingo gives you tiki-bar vibes during the day and circuit party vibes at night.

Puerto Vallarta: An LGBTQ+ Travel Guide

Eden at the Almar Resort

Learn why this Mexican resort town is known as the great gay escape.

On Puerto Vallarta's Lazaro Cardenas -- a cobblestoned street lined with the Mexican city's gay bars -- men embraced as if World War II were just won. Bright rainbow banners unfurled overhead. The sun shone brilliantly above a sea sparkling like freshly uncorked Dom Perignon.

It was Vallarta Pride 2021 in May. Vaccines had been rolled out, and P.V. was hosting one of the world's first major Pride celebrations. The clouds -- in the form of COVID variants -- had yet to roll in, and in that moment, an unbridled happiness swept the city. Life was resuming, and so too could queer joy.

While the realities of the pandemic have somewhat dampened this rosy outlook, Puerto Vallarta remains an oasis of this exultation. LGBTQ + tourists from around the world flock to this city for its beauty, seaside activities, parties, and above all, acceptance. On the streets of Zona Romantica -- P.V.'s LGBTQ+ district -- the sight of two people of the same gender holding hands is unremarkable. Moreover, it's a sign that the city's travel industry, dependent upon out tourists, is thriving.

My partner and I have visited Puerto Vallarta nearly a dozen times over the past few years. (We live in Los Angeles, a mere 2.5-hour flight away.) It remains our favorite vacation spot, in part because each time we've visited, our experience has always been different and exciting. The city is a choose-your-own adventure, and I'll outline a few of the paths for a vacationer ahead.

WHERE TO STAY

Puerto Vallarta is a resort city, so it's easy to be a tourist here. In particular, Nueva Vallarta, the area closer to the airport, teems with large resorts offering all-inclusive experiences. Why leave the hotel when major chains -- Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt , etc. -- offer unlimited food, drink, entertainment, and beach fun?

While these experiences can be tempting for some, particularly rainbow families in need of kid-friendly activities, many queer people will want to take advantage of the LGBTQ+ resorts. For those who really want to be in the mix, the Almar Resort ( AlmarResort.com ) is supreme. This beachfront property boasts dazzling ocean views and a nearly all-queer clientele, which mingles at the Top , a gay sky bar offering food and nightly entertainment, the newly opened Eden pool and lounge garden, and Mantamar , a seaside club boasting beach chairs (order the sushi and a massage) and an often-boisterous pool. Mantamar is the frequent site of DJ'ed parties and events. It's common to spot influencers and visiting Drag Race stars (hi, Shangela!) within its cabanas.

For a more budget-friendly alternative, consider the nearby Blue Chairs Resort by the Sea ( BlueChairs.com ). It's situated closer to the ocean, and the suite we booked had more square footage and much better views than the rooms at the Almar. However, the property definitely shows some wear and tear, and a shaky elevator ride up to the suite sparked some old Catholic prayers. (We also found vomit on a towel once.) Want closer to the nightlife? I've heard good things about the clothing-optional Pinata ( PinataPV.com ), or consider Airbnb for scouting the area's many luxury condos and seaside houses.

My favorite P.V. resort is Casa Cupula ( CasaCupula.com ). Situated on the hillside, this gay-owned property is a charming, if pricier, option with individually designed rooms and stunning views of the city. Whether a guest or not, don't miss its weekly Naked Pool Party.

ADVENTURES & ENTERTAINMENT

I'm not usually an "adventures" kind of tourist -- my eyes glazed over when the older woman next to me on the plane talked excitedly about zip-lining and parasailing. Honestly, just give me a beach chair and a margarita. But for those seeking out outdoor activities, Puerto Vallarta has an ocean full of options. Your best stop for finding these escapades, from whale watching to dolphin swimming to snorkeling to ATV tours, will be Vallarta Adventures ( V allarta-Adventures.com ). One of our highlights from Vallarta Adventures included a cruise out to Yelapa , a charming coastal town (pictured above), with a boozy hike up to a waterfall. We were also blown away by Rhythms of the Night -- Savia , a Cirque du Soleil-esque outdoor show inspired by the Aztec creation story; this island amphitheater was only reachable by boat, and the night ended with a torchlit dinner on the beach.

The above experiences will have many straight families on board, although we've befriended some same-sex couples on each excursion as well. However, there are a few cruises that cater exclusively to, well, gay cruising. Wet & Wild ( PVSunsetPartyCruise.com ) and Jet's ( JetsPrivateBoatTours.com ) both offer coastal tours that conclude with a secluded, clothing-optional beach party. We hear there's a nearby cove for those looking for a little more privacy.

Back on dry land, don't miss the amazing shows Zona Romantica has to offer. At the Palm Cabaret and Bar ( ThePalmCabaret.com ), we recently caught the jaw-dropping Boys on Fire , a male burlesque spectacle where the muscled performers tore off various uniforms while exhibiting feats of dance and contortionism. There, we also heard a beautiful Sam Smith tribute, and there are similar shows dedicated to the songs of Lady Gaga and Freddie Mercury. Catch homages to Whitney Houston at the Act2PV theater ( Act2PV.com ), which also hosts hilarious drag performances from Hedda Lettuce and Mama Tits.

WHERE TO EAT

From street vendors to high-end restaurants, there's so much delicious food in Puerto Vallarta. A great way to sample an assortment of the best is through Vallarta Food Tours ( VallartaFoodTours.com ). My partner and I chose a tequila-and-taco tasting tour. We not only got pleasantly buzzed, we also ate a taco made from cow eyes, an experience we're unlikely to repeat but nonetheless makes for a good story. It was also a nice way to acquaint ourselves with the streets of Puerto Vallarta while making friends with our (mostly straight) fellow group members.

Don't like tours? There are a plethora of fine-dining options. The Iguana ( CasaKimberly.com ) -- located in Elizabeth Taylor's onetime residence, which is now the tony hotel Casa Kimberly -- is filled with artwork honoring the late violet-eyed ally; it offers an elegant setting for shrimp, steak, and sunsets. If you're feeling romantic and adventurous, take a 25-minute Uber ride out to Le Kliff , a cliffside restaurant with unforgettable views. Cafe des Artistes ( CafeDesArtistes.com ), in Zona Romantica, has a gorgeous garden patio (with vegetarian options), and Barcelona Tapas ( BarcelonaTapas.net ) also offers stunning sunset fare with a Spanish twist.

For those looking for a culinary adventure, try Tintoque ( Tintoque.com.mx ), ranked one of Mexico's best restaurants for its celebration of Puerto Vallarta's cuisine history. If it's fancy Mexican food on the beach you're after, seek out La Palapa ( LaPalapaPV.com , pictured above) or El Dorado ( ElDoradoPVR.com ), adjoining restaurants where you can dine right on the sand. And if you're looking for a change of pace (and pasta), Tre Piatti ( TrePiatti.com ) is a must-visit for lovers of Italian food.

For more casual fare in Zona Romantica, try Joe Jack's Fish Shack ( JoeJacksPV.com ) -- request a table on the rooftop patio and get the red snapper -- or grab margs and fajitas at Margarita Grill across the street. Eat at Coco's Kitchen ( CocosKitchenpv.net ) for a great breakfast served on a charming patio. Finally, there are very affordable food options in P.V. Pancho's Takos is one of the city's best taquerias, although due to this reputation, the wait for a table may be lengthy. Stop by Mariscos el Guero for cheap, amazing seafood dishes. And don't miss the street fare -- look for lines of locals to get a clue as to the best.

As mentioned previously, nearly all of the gay nightlife is centered on Lazaro Cardenas. The first stop I'd recommend visiting on this street is not a bar, though -- it's Farmacia Guadalajara , located two blocks east of the clubs. This venue has an ATM that distributes pesos, which you will definitely need at the gay bars; many do not accept credit cards. After getting cash, it's really a matter of personal taste. Peek into the different venues and see what vibe you're seeking. On a typical night, I'll start at Mr. Flamingo , an open-air bar where the dance party spills onto the sidewalk. If Flamingo is too wild, I'll grab a table at La Cantina Margarita next door to watch the parade pass by. Next to La Cantina is La Noche , where I'll catch a fun drag show; the last time I was there, a queen lip-synched the entire Shakira-J. Lo Super Bowl halftime routine. Then head upstairs to La Noche's rooftop, which is the easiest place on the block to grab fresh air and mingle with other patrons. Afterward, sing your heart out at Kooky Karaoke .

The dance clubs are across the street. Industry plays pop favorites in its main bar. During circuit season, the back room pounds with house music and often requires a cover. Next door, CC Slaughters has a sizable dance floor, and it also has a food window if you need a late-night snack. Around the corner, CO-DE is a more of an LGBTQ-inclusive space with a Vegas vibe; spheres drop from the ceiling and change color while flames shoot from the DJ booth. End your night at Paco's Ranch , which attracts more of a local clientele and boasts some of the wildest drag shows I've ever seen -- all in Spanish, of course.

There are a number of infamous strip clubs in this neighborhood. Wet Dreams is probably the most well-known, although it looks seedy and the men can be aggressive here in pulling customers into back rooms. I was also turned away once for wearing gender-nonconforming attire. Next door, however, 69 offers a more upscale experience, with expert pole dancers performing amazing feats for the crowd. Tired of the strip? Don't miss the city's other queer haunts, including Blondies for a boozy slushee to go; One Six One , a craft cocktail lounge; and Qulture , a courtyard bar with art galleries featuring LGBTQ+ artists.

DON'T FORGET

There are several tentpole events that fill Puerto Vallarta with out tourists, among them Vallarta Pride ( VallartaPride.org , May 23-30), White Party ( WhitePartyGlobal.com , most holiday weekends, especially New Year's), and BeefDip Bear Week ( BeefDip.com , January 30-February 6). In general, December through April is considered "high season" for the tourism industry. If you hate crowds and want a more low-key experience, consider visiting in the weeks before Pride or during the rainy season (July to October).

Also, it's still a pandemic. Ensure that you're vaccinated with a booster shot. And if you're still worried about COVID-19, skip the indoor bars and restaurants and stick to the beach and al fresco dining.

As of the time of this article's writing, Americans flying back to the U.S. are required to submit proof of a negative COVID status one day before departure. Your resort should be able to arrange an antigen test. Otherwise, schedule an appointment with the LGBTQ+ COVID Center in Zona Romantica, which can be dialed locally at (322) 293-8478.

Data scientists and researchers at Misterb&b, the world’s largest LGBTQ + travel community, have used the habits of its 1 million registered users to create an index ranking the gayest cities in the world for 2024.

Founder Matthieu Jost created Misterb&b after he and his partner were victims of homophobia and harassment while trying to rent a room during a vacation in Spain.

The company connects LGBTQ+ travelers with rentals and services provided by family and allies in their destinations.

His latest feature, Weere, now allows travelers to connect socially before they travel. Users can chat with locals or make plans with fellow visitors.
