Where to buy Tom Cruise's iconic aviator sunglasses from Top Gun: Maverick

By Allie Johnson

What sunglasses does Tom Cruise wear in Top Gun: Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick," Tom Cruise's fighter pilot character wears Ray-Ban Aviator Classics (model 3025), also known as the Ray-Ban original. He wears gold frames with green lenses, an iconic color combination that has become known as "Top Gun sunglasses."

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

So Ray-Ban Aviators were a natural fit for a movie about fighter pilots. In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off.

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983.

In "Top Gun," Ray-Ban Aviators played a key part in Tom Cruise's style. His look was cool, tough and edgy. In addition to Cruise's Maverick, these other "Top Gun" characters also wore Ray-Ban Aviators:

Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer ( Ray-Ban Shooter 3138 )

Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards ( Ray-Ban Caravan 3136 )

Marcus "Sundown" Williams, played by Clarence Gilyard (Ray-Ban Aviator 3513)

Ron "Slider" Kerner, played by Rick Rossovich ( Ray-Ban Aviator 3025 )

Air Boss Johnson, played by Duke Stroud (Ray-Ban Outdoorsman 3030)

The original "Top Gun" movie sent sales of Ray-Ban Aviators soaring. The brand reportedly saw sales skyrocket by 40% after the movie’s release — higher than an F-14 fighter jet with Maverick in the cockpit.

Who is Tom Cruise's Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original 1986 movie "Top Gun," iconic American actor Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. So, who is Maverick? He's a fictional lieutenant and fighter pilot at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school for pilots. He's brave, charismatic and cocky.

Maverick is known for doing daredevil stunts in the air, playing volleyball in his free time, and for wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses . In the 1986 movie, his wingman is Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, a fellow fighter pilot who also wears aviators .

In the new Top Gun movie, Maverick returns to the Top Gun school as a flight instructor, still sporting his iconic aviators and the same edgy style from the original "Top Gun" movie.

Tom Cruise sunglasses: Where to buy

The best place to buy Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" aviators is the Ray-Ban website . They offer a huge selection of aviators, including the style and color combination Tom Cruise wears in "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original .

The Aviator Classic sunglasses, sometimes known as "Tom Cruise aviators," come in 12 frame-and-lens combinations, including:

Black frames with black lenses

Gold frames with violet lenses

Ray-Ban also sells a variety of other styles of sunglasses, including the ones worn by other characters in "Top Gun: Maverick." For example, you can buy Ray-Ban Shooters or Ray-Ban Caravan Aviators.

If you normally wear glasses for vision correction, you can also get Ray-Ban prescription sunglasses . In fact, you can buy Ray-Ban Aviator Classics with prescription lenses.

The importance of UV protection and quality sunglasses

Wearing quality sunglasses is just as important for you as it is for a fighter pilot.

That's because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can hurt your eyes and the surrounding skin, possibly leading to cataracts, eye growths and skin cancer around the eyes. Wearing a pair of quality sunglasses, even on cloudy days, can help keep your eyes healthy.

Choose sunglasses that offer 100% protection from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. To cut down on glare, look for sunglasses with polarized lenses . Much like the glare pilots face while in the cockpit, glare reflected off water and other surfaces can make it hard to see clearly.

If you want prescription sunglasses , ask your optician what lenses and lens coatings will work best for your needs. No matter what sunglasses you get, make sure they will protect your eyes anytime you're in the sun, whether you're flying, driving or just lounging by the pool.

These sunnies rep a lot of what military pilots have worn for decades. Yes, they're timelessly stylish, and Ray-Ban's model comes in a couple of different sizes to flatter most face shapes. If you have an average face width then you'll be good to get the 55 mm size but if you think you'll need to size up go with the 58 mm. The difference in sizing hardly effects the weight, so whichever you go with you'll still have a pair of metal frames that are light as a feather (about 1.1 oz).

And if you're looking to upgrade your Tom-approved Ray-Bans, you can get the 3025 in a polarized version . The cost is about $50 more but if you anticipate throwing these into your daily style rotation—which is a legitimate power move—then the price bump is worth the investment.

Sometimes the best style upgrades can be found by looking at what's always worked. Grab a pair of these bad boys and officially enter your "summer cool guy" status.

Want to steal Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun’ look? You can.

Those of you who haven’t been living under a rock for the past two years have been patiently waiting for Tom Cruise and his signature aviators to return in one of the most highly-anticipated military movies in Hollywood history. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ promised all the chest-pounding action, clever one-liners, and heartwarming nostalgia America could handle, and it’s apparently delivering on that promise, with domestic sales at the box office surpassing $300 million .

It might be too late for us to earn our wings and pilot a F/A-18 Super Hornet against the future of aerial combat, but we can at least look the part. According to Marlene Stewart, the ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ costume designer, Cruise was intimately involved in ensuring the Ray-Ban RB3025 aviators that Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell wore during the course of the film were perfect, from frame and lens color pairings to precise sizing. It’s no surprise that a man who’s famous for doing his own death-defying stunts would demand absolute perfection in every detail of his character’s appearance, too.

Now, you can steal that look — the same one that made aviators famous in 1986 when the original ‘Top Gun’ first premiered  — with the real deal from Ray-Ban. Right now, the Ray-Bans donned by Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ can now be yours on Amazon . These premium shades are in sky-high demand, so just be thankful you can land a pair at all.

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviators

Reviews photo

Feast your eyes on them, folks. The Ray-Ban RB3025 is the model of aviators made famous in ‘Top Gun’ and celebrated in ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ Feel free to mix and match frame and lens colors to match your personal style, or trust Tom Cruise’s taste and stick to the original gold over gray-green color scheme. Most people will prefer the 55-millimeter lenses, but oversized 58- and 62-millimeter lens widths are also available.

These aviators have a classic shape that’s been undeniably cool for generations. They’re as timeless as blue jeans and plain white tee-shirts. They’re as edgy as blacked-out Harleys and distorted electric guitars. And they look just as good in your dress uniform as they do during a pickup game of shirtless volleyball at the O-club. Will they ever go out of style? Maybe so, but not today.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses

In the high-octane American action drama “Top Gun” from 1986 and its equally thrilling 2022 sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” Tom Cruise effortlessly slips into the role of the audacious Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, complete with the iconic Ray-Ban 3025 Aviator Classic sunglasses . These sunglasses, with their unmistakable teardrop shape, robust metal frame, and superior polarized lenses, transcend mere fashion accessories to become a symbol of Maverick’s daring spirit and unparalleled style. Following the debut of the original film, these Ray-Ban Aviators became a cultural phenomenon, driving up sales by an impressive 40% and earning the esteemed title of “Top Gun sunglasses.”

Maverick’s choice of eyewear has a storied heritage, dating back to their 1930s military inception, designed primarily to shield pilots’ eyes from the relentless glare of the sky. Marlene Stewart, the astute costume designer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” recognized the weighty significance of these sunglasses. She meticulously selected the perfect pair for Cruise, reflecting his well-known dedication to authenticity and detail. This rigorous selection process ensured that the Aviator Classics worn by Maverick were not just any sunglasses, but an integral facet of his character’s identity, emblematic of his tenacity and flair.

For those of you under the age of 30 you might not know that once upon a time, many many years ago, Tom Cruise was not yet a borderline crazy Hollywood ass but a cool, up and coming young heartthrob. Following on from cult favorites Taps and Risky Business, Cruise graduated to the big leagues with a feature length commercial for the Air Force, sunglasses and jumpsuits, Top Gun.

Top Gun was… well, it was awesome. Women loved it for the gung ho airmen in close-fitting flight suits. Men loved it for the high speed dog fights and endless, over the top machismo. In short, everyone loved Top Gun.

Looking back through the mists of time to the 1986 release of Top Gun there’s one thing that jumps out in my mind. The Top Gun sunglasses. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and many other cast members spent much of the movie in what could accurately be described as the coolest damned sunglasses ever to grace a face.

Naturally, in the years since the theatrical release of Top Gun there has been a steady, constant supply of guys who think to themselves as the credits roll ‘Damn, I need to get myself a pair of those sunglasses’. In the case of many movies it can often be almost impossible to find the details of costumes and accessories – costume designers usually aren’t eager to give away their secrets – but in the case of the Top Gun sunglasses it couldn’t be easier.

tom cruise top gun glasses

Maverick’s sunglasses, as worn throughout Top Gun, are an example of the timeless classic Ray Ban 3025 Aviators with gold frame.

I remember getting my first pair of Ray Ban Aviators just a couple of months following the release of Top Gun in 1986. A wealthy uncle who’d forgotten too many birthdays splashed out on a pair (the $100 price tag at the time was a little too steep for my 16 year old pocket). I remember the first time I went for a spin on my bike wearing the Aviator’s – my neighbour called out to me as I left the yard, ‘Hey, cool Top Gun sunglasses!’ Since then, even though Ray Ban Aviators have appeared in countless movies, TV shows and on the faces of friends, family, strangers and celebrities for decades, I’ve always thought of Aviators as ‘Top Gun Sunglasses’.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

In the highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Tom Cruise once again dons the iconic Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses that he wore in the original Top Gun film released in 1986. Known for his signature aviator shades, Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell continues to sport the timeless and stylish eyewear that has become synonymous with the Top Gun franchise.

The decision to have Cruise wear the same sunglasses in the sequel pays homage to the classic film and adds an element of nostalgia for fans of the original. The aviator style, with its distinctive tear-drop shape and metal frame, perfectly captures the essence of Maverick’s character as a daring and enigmatic naval aviator.

These Ray-Ban Aviators, specifically the model 3025 (Aviator Classic), have become an enduring symbol of coolness and have remained a popular choice among fashion-conscious individuals over the years. The popularity of these sunglasses soared after the release of the first Top Gun film, and they have since become synonymous with Maverick’s character and the Top Gun brand.

The Aviator sunglasses not only add to Maverick’s iconic image but also serve a practical purpose. As a naval aviator, Maverick needs reliable eye protection against the sun’s glare and other elements when flying at high altitudes. The Ray-Ban Aviators with polarized lenses provide the necessary protection while exuding a classic and effortlessly stylish look.

Tom Cruise’s association with the Aviator sunglasses has cemented their status as a timeless and fashionable eyewear choice. The fact that he continues to wear them in the sequel pays tribute to the enduring appeal of both the actor and the iconic eyewear.

The decision to maintain continuity in the character’s style from the original film reinforces the connection between the two movies and underscores the nostalgic appeal for fans. It allows longtime followers of the franchise to relive the excitement of the original while experiencing the new and thrilling story of Top Gun: Maverick.

With the release of Top Gun: Maverick, it is expected that the Ray-Ban Aviators will once again see a surge in popularity, as fans rush to emulate Maverick’s iconic look. Whether you’re a fan of the Top Gun series or simply appreciate classic and stylish eyewear, the Aviator sunglasses continue to be a timeless choice that captures the essence of Maverick’s legendary character.

Those are Randolph Enginerring Aviators. NOT Ray Ban.

I get it. This is a AM site but at least get your facts right.

James says:

Another commenter suggested that they are American Opticals, so there is certainly more than one opinion on that. And there is no official statement from the production about which sunglasses he actually wore.

I still strongly believe them to be Ray-Bans for two reasons:

1) Tom Cruise is known for wearing Ray-Bans in many of his movies.

2) Any trustworthy source that I can find describes them as Ray-Bans.

http://theweek.com/articles/469629/stories-behind-10-famous-product-placements

http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20150708-the-enduring-appeal-of-aviator-sunglasses

In any case, Ray-Ban 3025 Aviators are easy to find, of good quality, and very close to those used in Top Gun.

If anyone else has some thoughts on this matter, please add a comment below.

Paul Davies Aviation Historian/Pilot. says:

Confirmed by many sources, including Ray Ban themselves, and Baush and Lomb who made the originals in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Dark Green Glass lenses. Even their competitor:Randolph Engineering confirm the Movie used Ray Bans but they supplied many other movies. The sequal due out as Top Gun Maverick but known as TOPGUN 2 shows him wearing Ray Bans. The confusion is due to different lighting showing the Gold lens frames looking silver and with the production company scratching off the white Ray Ban wording logo on the lens to avoid blatant advertising. Both Ray Ban and Top Gun PR confirm used Ray Bans for both films.

michla says:

In addition to this guys comment randolph ebginering glasses have straight low nose bar and maverick has curved ones like Ray ban

Top Gun was about Navy Pilots not Air Force. The Air Force never takes off and lands on a ship.

Jay Dreiling says:

To Jr. They are indeed RL Aviators 3025’s. You too should get your facts straight before you jump on someone else. …….Shmuck 🙂

Erich says:

6 year late reply but your correct. 😁

Pooks says:

There is very little knowledge on what sunglasses they used in the movie. But, for a movie to ‘make sense’ or be ‘realistic’ on what sunglasses pilots would wear.. it would be American Optical or Randolph Engineering.

I pick American Optical. American Optical was used and still used by NASA and our American Forces. Why? The materials used is better than RayBan. All materials used are military grade. Why would our forces use cheap materials? The RayBan Aviator is a replica of the originator and a replica is always made with cheap materials. It would only make sense that Americans at that time period would want to wear USA Made products. There’s a reason why these sunglasses were only made for the Armed Forces. They were just the best in quality. The only reason I didn’t pick Randolph is that American Optical is older and was widely used by our Forces. It was the first sunglasses to go to the Moon.

Lets ask Tom Cruise?

Thanks for your comment!

I still believe the Top Gun sunglasses to be Ray-Bans, though. Product placement was well used in the 80s, so their choice of brand probably had little to do with the American Forces and NASA. After all, it is said that the movie single-handedly increased the sales of Ray-Ban 3025 by 40%.

Oh, I wish Tom Cruise someday would drop a comment on this question.

Robert Williamson says:

He’s not correct but my guess is that he isn’t the sort of person that takes being corrected well.

Bausch & Lomb developed the first Aviator pilot’s glasses and eventually called them “Ray BAN” literally means that they were designed to ban the rays from pilots eyes.

Wikipedia agrees en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviator_sunglasses

There’s a good history here grailed.com/drycleanonly/aviator-sunglasses-top-gun-history

They were worn by the military in WW2 and by General Douglas Mcarthur. pinterest.co.uk/pin/782359766489192495/

I think he’s just read some advertising material for American Optical and bought it.

The original “Aviators” didn’t have tear drop lenses at all. Randolf Engineering has been supplying US military pilots with original Aviators since at least the 70’s. They’re designed with bayonet style temple frames to fit under flight helmet and combat gear. Robert Duval is wearing them for example in Apocalypse Now. But the model “Concorde” which is also made by Randolph Engineering is the modern version of what Ray Ban calls its 3025 “Aviators”. I own Randolph Engineering and Ray Ban sunglasses and both manufacturers are fantastic in my opinion

jesse. says:

I wanted the sunglasses that Jon Hamm wore on Mad Men, which are not Carvans like he is wearing in Top Gun (you can see the Ray Ban tagging) I bought the American Optics, because I bet that Don Draper wore the same sunglasses as astronauts.

I think the movie very clearly has a Ray Ban tie in.

MattyC says:

Pooks….obviously never has been in the military. Very little of any military equipment supplied is of highest standard. It’s of ‘best budget’. It’s why most of the guys in the Army buy their own boots – issued ones are shit. And the military doesn’t issue sunglasses (well Australian anyway).

Randolph Engineering is still under contract with the US Navy making sunglasses. Original “Aviators”, not the tear drop styled Ran Ban 3025’s seen in Top Gun.

Just found this post. They are definitely NOT AOs. The nose piece wire and top wire on the frame are too close together comparing your pics above with AOs website pics. The nose piece wire tends to favor Ray Bans. Ray Ban had a contract to supply the US military with pilot glasses until 1982 when RE took over and has had it since. It is possible that the sunglasses are cheap knockoffs since the “Ray Ban” printing is missing from the right lens although the costumer could have removed it. Other styles worn by other actors would also support Ray Bans as I remember seeing Cubmaster and Shooter styles worn by other “pilots”. And for “Pooks”… Ray Ban in ’85-’86 was owned by Bausch & Lomb and were US made.

bob lee swaggard says:

if they did use Ray-Ban glasses in top gun, they scrapped the white lettering off the right eye lens. But if you buy Ray-Ban sunglasses today they will not be like the glasses from the 1980s Bausch & Lomb sold the company to Luxottica in 1999.I have owned 5 Ray Bans that were made by Bausch & Lomb and 1 Luxottica pair. in my opinion the Bausch & Lomb glasses were heavier and better made then the Luxottica crap for sale today. my 5 Bausch & Lomb glasses i lost 3, 1 pair fell off the top shelf of my wall locker and hit the concrete lenses first and shattered the 2 lenses. my final Bausch & Lomb glasses were my first I ever owned handed down to me by my uncle he bought the outdoorsman II glasses in 1967 while in the Air Force so i put them away as soon as i learned i could buy my own glasses in the PX for about half the price people paid in the civilian world. When i lost my last pair of B&L glasses( i had those from 1996- 2009) i bought a pair to replace them not knowing of the Luxottica purchase of the company, i lost the Luxottica glasses in 2017, and rather then buy another poorly made glasses from Luxottica, i got out my 1967 glasses and bought a new old stock pair of lenses for the B&L frame that i still had kept away with my uncles old glasses. id rather buy a old pair of B&L glasses then buy a new Luxottica pair

Paul Davies says:

I purchased the original 1986 American B and L made glass etched lens, metal Gold frame ones also. The new ones are not of the same quality but still good. I am getting some eyewear retainer lanyards for mine after reading your message. The Outdoorman version had tight loops fitting around and under behind the ear to keep them on if you looked down. I always thought these were for when doing aerobatics! Cannot wait – although had to for two years of postponement of the film sequel: TopGun Maverick. Trailers are worth watching also. I was a regular pilot at the time of the original and return to flying next year so a full circle journey for Tom and I.

They are vintage Ray Ban made between 1960’s and 1970’s era by Baush and Lomb and made in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Green lenses.

Correct. TopGun TopMan!

Have you considered starting a post/thread about the sunglasses worn in the NEW Top Gun: Maverick movie being filmed ( for 2020 release ) ? Some set photos are already leaked! Would love to hear this group’s thoughts! Thanks

Thanks for your question.

Of course we need to address the new Top Gun: Maverick (2020) movie! It will probably not be a separate post, but an update to this one. I have only seen the picture from his Twitter account where he turns his head away. I think we need more for it to be relevant. You are always welcome to share your thoughts!

Tom Cruise is wearing his original, or newer version Ray Ban RB3025 Gold framed glasses in G15 Green-grey glass lenses. Original made in USA around 1980s, newer ones made in Italy and Worldwide under licence. Ray Ban will have publicity ready or already out as I write this in December 2020. Top Gun Maverick trailers confirm this also.

Sergio says:

I cannot say if those are Ray Ban or not, but I think they are. It would not make much sense to use the rest of aviator-kind models by Ray Ban for other characters (Shooter, Caravan, Outdoorsman…) and use other brand for the Aviator model.

Andrew says:

These are without doubt Ray Ban RB3025 L0205 in Gold Frame and Dark Green G15 lenses sans white Ray Ban Logo on right lens. FYI, if you want to remove that white Ray Ban logo from the lens you can easily do so by using a penny and carefully scratching it off. The penny is soft enough so it won’t scratch the glass lenses. This works on all other lenses made of glass without any flash or mirror coating. I did this on a pair of Ray Ban and Randolph Aviator sunglasses and in my opinion look way better without that logo there.

Some say Tom Cruise wore grey lens gold framed Ray Ban RB3025 but most of the stills show green light filtering when he is sideways frontal to camera. Yet glasses look very dark? Some say they used reflective mirror lenses but that does not seem right. All the evidence I could get points to you being right. These were original USA made B and L Ray Bans with Gold metal frames, Glass Dark green G15 Lenses and etched into the frames with the size, B and L USA and other detailing. The white “Ray Ban” was removed presumably to avoid claims of blatant advertising?

Kirsten says:

What about Charlotte Blackwood’s (Kelly McGillis) sunglasses?

Dakota says:

Hey i just need some advice, i’m 15 and i’m wondering if it is worth it to buy a pair of ray ban model 3025’s? Is there any other glasses that would be just as good for a lesser price?

Much appreciated Dakota L.

In this article in Inc. the CEO of Randolph Engineering specifically says that Tom Cruise’s sunglasses in Top Gun are Ray Ban…

GQ also describes them as Ray Ban RB3025…

Good man. I found all those and more confirming these were, in 1986 Ray Ban RB2025 Green G15 Lens, possibly Polarised? with Gold metal frames and the Ray Ban white painted logo removed to avoid claims of blatant advertising although much was done in PR between the film people and the Ray Ban company-then and since the owners changed from Baush and Lomb which, by 1985-86 were still made in the USA. Model number is RB3025-L0205 in 58mm Gold Frame and G15 Green (Glass) lenses. The new film: Top Gun Maverick/TOPGUN 2 shows him wearing the same pair or an up to date pair of RB3025 in Gold with green G15 AVIATOR tear drop Lenses. The Randolph Engineering company supplied glasses to many other movies however. Just waiting now to see the sountrack album. The Original TOPGUN Movie soundtrack when released went: “ballistic Mav!”.

Fred Romero says:

So… I guess a pair of (very similar) Bushnell aviator glasses won’t make the cut, huh? In another time and place (in the 70s & 80s) I was a Commercial rated pilot and Flight Instructor by day and a cop at night, and I wore my Bushnell glasses as part of the total image and they seemed to work just fine for both function and image. Upon reading this link I did a deep search in the garage and I found my old glasses… and after looking at them on me in the mirror I’m back baby, nothing cooler than an old pilot with strut and ‘tude!

Clover says:

What is the name of the sunglasses that are worn by Jennifer Connelly in Top Gun 2?

Hassan Razek says:

Hi there – the shades Miles Teller wore in the film, were they size 55mm or 58mm?

Ray-Ban Aviators Are Flying off the Shelves Because of ‘Top Gun’

Sales of the iconic model also rose after the release of the original film in 1986..

Tom Cruise on the poster for 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Movie tickets aren’t the only thing that Tom Cruise can sell.

The actor’s latest blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick , isn’t just entertaining movie audiences around the globe this summer, it’s inspiring them to buy sunglasses as well, according to Bloomberg Newsweek . Sales of the classic Ray-Ban aviators that Cruise wears in the film have gone up since its release in late May.

It would seem that Paramount Pictures isn’t the only company benefiting from the sequel’s success at the box office. A representative for David Clulow, one of the UK’s biggest sunglass retailers, told the financial publication that the RB3025 Aviator has become one of its top-selling models this summer. This isn’t the first time Ray-Ban has seen a boost in sales of the model driven by the release of a Top Gun movie, points out GQ . In 1986, when the first installment in the franchise came out, sales of the brand’s aviators rose by nearly 40 percent in the seven months after the film’s release.

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator

Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator

The $163 aviators don’t just look the part, either. They are the actual sunglasses that Cruise’s Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell wears in both movies. His Ray-Bans aren’t store bought, though. They were altered to fit him perfectly.

“Tom is a stickler,” Marlene Stewart, the movie’s costume designer, told The Daily Beast last month. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic, Aviator Ray-Bans, and what I do and what costume designers do is you work with props, who is in charge of making the glasses. Altering them, customizing them. I’m in charge of the look, which includes the glasses, but I work in tandem with props, so that when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the Aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.

Maverick’s Ray-Bans aren’t the only pair of Cruise-related shades you can buy right now. A few years back, Persol re-released the PO3225S sunglasses the actor wore in another of his classic ‘80s movies, Cocktail . Those glasses are still available to buy  for $395.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick sunglasses can be our wingman anytime

tom cruise top gun glasses

After a long, protracted wait, Maverick: Top Gun is finally here. A slew of major blockbusters have all had their opening dates pushed due to COVID-19; a handful of recent theatrical releases, meanwhile, are getting fast-tracked to Video on Demand. But since the trailer dropped a whopping two years ago, Maverick has remained a shimmering ray of popcorn-chomping hope on the horizon, a high-octane, greased-up, beach-volleyball-playing, mach-two-with-your-hair-on-fire scorcher that promises a return to the heyday of the summer blockbuster .

But the much-anticipated Top Gun sequel stands apart for another reason entirely. Cinephiles love to bemoan the dearth of originality in modern blockbusters; the most successful pictures, they’ll groan at you, are almost always paint-by-numbers sequels or lazy remakes or loose adaptations of some obscure Happy Meal toy from 1992 designed to tickle your brain’s warm nostalgic pleasure centers. Judging by the reviews, though, Maverick appears to be a shot-for-shot recreation of the original Top Gun (albeit laced with way, way more vertigo-inducing, real-deal stunt work )—and yet people are still losing their goddamn minds over this movie. Tom Cruise does not lose. His ego just keeps writing checks that his body miraculously continues to cash.

Along with Cruise, his old teeth-chomping adversary Val Kilmer, and a sweaty undercurrent of latent homoeroticism, the sequel is bringing back another vital piece of the Top Gun puzzle: Maverick’s iconic Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses . In the seven months after the first film dropped in 1986, sales of aviators reportedly jumped 40 per cent. It’s easy to see why: everybody, a slightly damp Tom Cruise especially included, looks great in a pair of aviators. The teardrop lenses flatter all face shapes, and the slender metal frames sync up perfectly with everything from a tight white tee and Levi’s to a heavily starched and pressed dress uniform. Like Cruise himself, they’re ageless and eternal.

And if the buzz is to be believed, you’re going to want to buy your pair pronto. Assuming the excitement around this flick continues to build apace, and history repeats itself, waiting to see it before copping the shades will likely mean missing out on them entirely. (And remember—there are no points for second place.) Safer to secure ‘em now, before everyone and their uncle gets the same idea. Trust us: they’re going to look cool as all hell on an 80-foot IMAX screen, and they’ll look equally as cool on you all summer. They’re the best of the best, and they’ll make you better.

Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses – Tom Cruise

We’re an affiliate As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you whatsoever.

Tom Cruise is finally back and wearing his trademark Aviator sunglasses in the long-awaited and painfully long-overdue sequel to Top Gun – Top Gun: Maverick .

Tom Cruise’s original Top Gun Sunglasses became iconic in cinema with the 1986 film popularizing the Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses, turning the brand and its classic sunglasses style into something of a legend.

Ray-Ban’s Aviator sunglasses became synonymous with pilots and aviation in general and in fact, with movies & Tom Cruise too for some time. Tom Cruise will also be wearing Aviator style sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7 next year too.

The iconic Aviator sunglasses style has never gone out of fashion and more than 35 years later, Tom Cruise’s character “Maverick” is still wearing the same style of sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick .

Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses – Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban RB3025 Sunglasses - Silver and Grey

The sunglasses of choice for Tom Cruise and pilots all over the world are the Ray-Ban RB3025 Large Aviator . These can be easily found on Amazon.com here or Amazon.co.uk .

In fact, this model from Ray-Ban is available in numerous colour variants with or without polarized lenses so finding a colour to match your style should be no problem at all. Check out the various options on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk here.

Miles Teller Sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Miles Teller Sunglasses in Top Gun Maverick

Miles Teller is also seen wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick . Miles Teller plays Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

Miles Teller’s character “Rooster” has opted for the Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan Sunglasses . These are an alternative variant of the classic Aviator shape. A little more square in design, these Aviator sunglasses may not be as iconic as the classic Aviator, but they are by no means any less cool. In fact, these could prove to become a future classic pair of sunglasses off the back of Top Gun: Maverick .

You can find these Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan sunglasses on Amazon.com here or Amazon.co.uk .

Ray-Ban RB3136 001 CARAVAN Sunglasses

Jon Hamm Sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Jon Hamm plays Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson in Top Gun: Maverick . As commander of the Naval Air Forces, it’s important that “Cyclone” gets to wear some cool sunglasses too. Like “Rooster”, Jon Hamm’s character has also opted for the awesome Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan sunglasses .

Again, you can find these Ray-Ban RB3136 Caravan sunglasses on Amazon.com here or Amazon.co.uk .

Glen Powell Sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer - Glen Powell - Top Gun: Maverick Sunglasses

Glen Powell plays Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick .

Apparently “Hangman” didn’t get the memo about Top Gun pilots wearing Aviator sunglasses. Thankfully though he’s saved the day by wearing these brilliant Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarer sunglasses in the film.

Slightly smaller than the classic Wayfarer sunglasses, these are more rounded off and a little less aggressive in design, but arguably more practical and no less awesome.

Ray-Ban RB2132 901 New Wayfarer Sunglasses

Prescription Eyeglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick also features some prescription eyewear too and it looks like they are keeping it faithful by sticking to Ray-Ban here too. We even see an optical version of the Aviator glasses, apparently worn in combat!

Bashir Salahuddin Wears Ray-Ban Glasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun Maverick - Prescription Glasses

Bashir Salahuddin plays WO-1 Bernie “Hondo” Coleman and wears an optical version of the classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer – the Ray-Ban RX5184 New Wayfarer prescription glasses. These are a popular choice from Ray-Ban giving that classic Wayfarer shape but with clear lenses.

Lewis Pullman Wears Optical Ray-Ban Eyeglasses in Top Gun: Maverick

Prescription Glasses in Top Gun Maverick

Lewis Pullman plays Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick. Unlike most of the other Top Gun pilots, Floyd is seen wearing Ray-Ban RX6389 optical eyeglasses both on the ground and in the cockpit.

These are a large square style metal frame with clear or prescription lenses. They are not too dissimilar from a typical Aviator style.

Just Like in 1986 Sales of Aviator Sunglasses Are Up Because of 'Top Gun'

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Top Gun: Maverick , the 2022 sequel to the 1986 blockbuster that literally sent Tom Cruise into the troposphere, is hitting all the megahit landmarks: grossing a stunning $1.2 billion globally, becoming Paramount’s biggest worldwide release ever, and…reigniting a fervent public interest in aviator sunglasses?

According to Bloomberg , UK sales of the classic Ray-Ban RB3025 aviators that Cruise’s Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell wears in the franchise are way up since the movie hit theaters—a repeat of the scenario that followed the premiere of the original Top Gun in 1986, which reportedly boosted sales of aviators nearly 40% in the seven months after its release.

And certainly, of all the covetable elements from Top Gun (flight suits, glistening abs, the ability to fly a plane), snagging a pair of shades similar, if not nearly identical, to ones that Maverick wears in the franchise is the most attainable. Nearly identical, that is, because Cruise’s personal pair are meticulously, and characteristically, custom.

“Tom is a stickler,” Maverick costume designer Marlene Stewart told The Daily Beast in June. “We had many, many fittings for the glasses. These are classic aviator Ray-Bans…when we had a fitting with Tom, we knew of course that the aviators were going to be on board. That was never a question.” (Cruise, who also produced the film, was a stickler about many other aspects of its production, from its intensive aerial stunts to its military accuracy .) The style has also been Cruise’s personal shades of choice for the last few decades. Just this past weekend, the actor met up with the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team in Gloucestershire, England, and all of them wore—you guessed it—aviator sunglasses.

Which Sunglasses Did Tom Cruise Wear in "Top Gun"?

Updated: July 19, 2023

tom cruise top gun glasses

Tom Cruise's iconic aviator sunglasses from 1986's "Top Gun" remain iconic movie fashion icons today. His choice of the Ray-Ban RB3025 gold model became an instantaneous fashion trend that still persists today and still makes waves through both movie business and fashion industry. This blog post delves deeper into their long history, along with their impact in cinematic and fashion circles alike.

Tom Cruise famously played Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, an accomplished and fierce fighter pilot with a rebellious streak in "Top Gun." Maverick became iconic for both his daring flying skills and charismatic style; particularly his iconic Ray-Ban sunglasses that epitomized Maverick's confident yet distant persona - these shades became one of his trademark features.

Ray-Ban RB3025 gold aviators became an extension of Maverick's character and an expression of his rebellious sophistication. Their gold frame added extra appeal, while the green large, tinted lenses helped create an air of mystery around him - truly making these glasses unique.

Ray-Ban sunglasses date back to 1937. Initially designed as aids for fighter pilots during World War II, these shades now serve as an elegant nod to aviation history by being chosen for use on "Maverick." Ray-Ban was amazed at the impact of "Top Gun." Sales of their RB3025 model skyrocketed within one year after its release; showing just how influential movies can be on fashion trends. Today, these iconic sunglasses remain highly sought-after among collectors.

The movie and sunglasses made an indelible mark on pop culture, symbolizing youthful rebellion during the 80s while remaining timeless symbols of cool in modern society. Notable figures, style icons and fashion bloggers alike have worn them since, further solidifying their status within fashion culture.

Tom Cruise's iconic Ray-Ban RB3025 gold aviators with green G-15 lenses from "Top Gun" have become cultural and fashion icons over time, transcending film prop status into cultural iconography. Capturing both film spirit and era while remaining timeless , they continue to excite film buffs and fashion lovers alike.

Tom Cruise Had A 4-Word Response When He Saw The Story For Top Gun 3. So, What's Next?

Short but effective!

Top Gun : Maverick was a monster success in 2022. The Tom Cruise-led blockbuster did record breaking numbers at the box office, and the action film even landed a Best Picture nomination that year. It was a hit with audiences as well, and everyone seemed to love the sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott film. Plans for a Top Gun 3 seemed inevitable, and recent reports suggest that Paramount is moving forward officially with a Top Gun threequel . Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently opened up about the film, revealing Cruise’s reaction to hearing the story idea for the film.

The legendary film producer recently spoke to ScreenRant about the studio’s plans for Top Gun 3 , and how development on the film is progressing. The good news is that plans seem to be actively in motion, with Maverick director Joe Kosinski attached to direct again. As for Cruise’s response to hearing about the story plans for Top Gun 3 , according to Bruckheimer, he said:

I really like that.

This is admittedly a very short response, and not much to go off of. But when it comes to making a Top Gun film, Cruise’s approval is everything. It took over 30 years to get Top Gun: Maverick off the ground because the Jerry Maguire star didn’t want to proceed until the script was just right. Cruise is also a major producer on the Top Gun films, so his opinion is incredibly important for the future of the franchise. Getting him to sign off on at least the story pitch is a really great sign for a script to finally be put together. Even with this good news, it still may be a while before we see Top Gun 3 on the big screen. Bruckheimer said of the film:

It will be Tom Cruise [leading the cast]. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and [Tom] said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing ‘Mission: Impossible’ right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.

Bruckheimer is right to say that Mission: Impossible is a massive commitment for Cruise, especially in the most recent years. Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1 faced a number of delays due to a complex COVID production. Additionally, Mission: Impossible 8 had to stop filming due to the 2023 Actors and Writers strikes. As a result M:I 8 has also been delayed to 2025 . In general, the Mission films are complicated productions with their complex action sequences, and logistics involved. With such an undertaking, Cruise pursuing a Top Gun 3 in tandem with M:I responsibilities feels almost, well, mission impossible .

However, this is great news regardless. With the main team behind Maverick back to work on Top Gun 3 , and a strong Cruise-approved story in the works, Paramount seems to have all the tools for another hit on their hands. Glen Powell has expressed interest in returning to Top Gun when duty calls, and it seems like the other cast members are down for another high-flying adventure . Even if fans do have to wait for Cruise’s schedule to clear up, if Top Gun: Maverick was any indication, Top Gun 3 will be well worth the wait.

While fans wait for Top Gun 3 to eventually hit the big screen, they can revisit Tom Cruise ’s adrenaline pumping performances in 1986’s Top Gun and 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick , which are both now streaming for Paramount+ subscribers . Lewis Hamilton Regrets Turning Down Tom Cruise For ‘Top Gun: Maverick' Role

Lewis Hamilton is producing a Formula 1 movie with Joseph Kosinski starring Brad Pitt.

The British racing star could have worked with the filmmaker on Top Gun: Maverick had it not been for his conflicting work schedule.

In a new interview, Hamilton revealed he lobbied Tom Cruise to star in a possible Top Gun sequel before the 2022 film was made.

"I will even be a janitor," Hamilton recalled in a GQ interview talking about his conversation with Cruise. "Just let me be in it."

When Maverick entered the casting stage, Cruise remembered Hamilton and offered him a role as a pilot, but the racer had to decline due to his schedule, something he now regrets.

“Firstly, I hadn't even had, like, an acting lesson," he said. "And I don't want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn't have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom - and it broke my heart. And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it's: It could've been me!”

Although he didn’t have the opportunity to work with Kosinski in Top Gun: Maverick , he will now work with him in the Formula 1 film.

“My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic,” Hamilton said. “There's two different fan groups that we have - like, the old originals, who from the day they're born hearing the Grand Prix music every weekend and watching with their families, to the new generation that just learned about it today through Netflix.”

He continued, "I felt my job really has been to try to call BS. ‘This would never happen.' ‘This is how it would be.' ‘This is how it could happen.' Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not."
