Pukekohe, Auckland 2120, New Zealand
Created By: Auckland Council
Tour Information
Pukekohe is a settlement at the extreme southern boundary of Auckland. It is traditionally associated with food production and, once being part of the Franklin District, has been called the ‘breadbasket of Auckland’. This walking tour showcases various historic places that marked the development of the town as points of civic, commercial, and religious significance to its residents and the wider area.
The name Pukekohe is a shortened form of the Māori placename ‘puke kohekohe’, meaning ‘hill of the kohekohe tree’. Kohekohe ( Dysoxylum spectabile ) are a mahogany-like tree that are abundant in the area, especially on and around Pukekohe Hill to the south of the town centre. The hill was the largest and last volcano to erupt in the South Auckland Volcanic Field about 550 million years ago.
The wider area surrounding Pukekohe has long been inhabited by Māori. Europeans first began settling to the east and west of the present site in the 1850s, especially in the communities of Paerata, Puni, and Buckland. Settlement was disrupted by the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, with some notable clashes in the vicinity of Pukekohe between Pākehā settlers and the adherents of the Māori King Movement (Kīngitanga) in their struggle to assert their right to ancestral land and address the trespasses committed by landholders and the colonial government. As the war moved south, settlement resumed and accelerated in the late 1870s with the arrival of the railway.
Despite some difficult early years, Pukekohe became one of the largest vegetable producing regions in New Zealand by the early twentieth century. With its good climate and rich soil, it comes as no surprise that the region produces one-third of all vegetables grown in the country. At first, market gardeners were European, but later years saw significant involvement of Chinese, Indian, and Māori growers whose descendants make up the fabric of local society.

Experience Africa
With an escorted tour with pukekohe travel.
Africa is about wildlife, it is the safari capital of the world .
Two very distinct areas with similar but different experiences are – East Africa and Southern Africa.
Straddling both Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa is the Serengeti and Masai Mara with its vast open savannah grassland and where the annual Great Migration takes place. Each year up to 2 million wildebeest along with herds of zebra, antelope and other animals make the trek from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Predators await at every river crossing and the circle of life continues.
Further South and ranging both north and south of the mighty Zambezi River starting from South Africa’s renowned Kruger Park in the east there are the wildlife regions in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, here, the largest herds of elephant in Africa roam this region. The terrain here is more broken country with Rocky kopjies (hills), every shade of brown and a wonderful variety of trees. In the midst of all this is the roar of the spectacular Victoria Falls.
The Okavango Delta in Botswana and its huge flood plain is a popular draw card with its hippopotamus and vast birdlife, while further west there is Namibia with its Etosha Game Park and the contrasting incomparable sand dunes along the Skeleton Coast.
In our winter months most New Zealander’s visit Africa where with its cloudless days and crisp starry nights and when the animals are easier to find. This is a time when the animals wait their patience at the waterholes for their turn to drink. The giraffes have to do their version of the splits to reach the water! There is a definite pecking order!!
Experiences are many, from watching a Jacana (a bird) skitter across a lily pad, a crocodile basking in the sunshine to elephants on their steady march to the waterholes to drink and their young rolling in the mud and blowing little water spouts as they learn to use their trunks.
The big cats can be plentiful and it is not uncommon to see the results of a kill or even watch the stalking of a lion as they crouch and wait, tension is high before the explosive chase, quite often the hunted escape to see another day.
Sometimes it is the tiny that fascinates - a dung beetle pushing its load, a chameleon changing its colour or a lilac breasted roller fluffing up it feathers in the morning light. Then there is the morning cooing of the plentiful African dove or the haunting call of the fish eagle watching for prey from high in the tree.
The measure of luxury and satisfaction is not gauged by the thread count of the sheets or the quality of the food, while on safari, although both are excellent, but the exclusivity of the experience.

NAPIER (B)
This morning is at your leisure to enjoy the Art Deco festivities. After finding some lunch (own cost) in the many cafes and eateries, take to the streets to enjoy the Classic Car Parade . The Royal New Zealand Navy band will lead the way for some of New Zealand’s oldest cars from the mid 1890’s through to the mid 1930’s. After this fascinating display we journey out to Mission Estate Winery , the oldest winery in New Zealand, established in 1851 by the French Marist religious order, for a tour and wine tasting. The remainder of the evening is free to enjoy the range of Art Deco festivities happening around the town.
Note: The full Art Deco Festival 2024 brochure will be available in late 2023 with a full schedule of events for the festival weekend. Any of these additional activities that you choose to participate in will be at your own expense/booking.
Day 3 Sunday 18 February 2024
This morning we explore Hastings to view the Art Deco buildings around the city. Our first stop is the popular Hawkes Bay Farmers Market , a place where the region’s finest growers and artisan producers supply their wares so you can buy direct from the source. Our next stop will be Birdwoods, offering a gallery, sculpture garden, and old-fashioned sweet shop. Once we arrive back in Napier in the early afternoon, the remainder of the day is for you to enjoy the Art Deco festivities.
Day 4 Monday 19 February 2024
JOURNEY FROM NAPIER (B)
We start our final day with a guided tour on-board magnificently restored Art Deco Vehicles . On this guided tour, we will be accompanied by an experienced chauffeur who will give us a light-hearted guided tour of Napier where we will learn about its intriguing history and fascinating highlights. After our tour, we depart Napier and travel through the Esk Valley and over the Kaimanawa Ranges to Taupō, where there is time available to browse the local town centre and purchase lunch (own cost). We continue on our way to arrive in Hamilton full of memories, fun and laughter.
