What We Offer

Lobster Fisherman

Lobster Fishing

During your cruise on Lulu, experience a sample of the life and work of the Maine lobstermen (or lobsterwomen!). Watch a demonstration of how lobster traps are hauled. We’ll describe all the parts of a lobster trap and how the lobsters (and many other sea creatures) find their way to the bait inside. Learn all about the anatomy and life cycle of the Maine lobster. For example, did you know that lobsters smell with their leg hairs?

sightseeing-with-lulu

Sightseeing

Cruising on Lulu is like making the prettiest coastal Maine postcard come to life. See different privately-owned islands up close. Observe sea birds, bald eagles, and other marine wildlife in their natural environment. View beautiful summer cottages along the shores of Mount Desert Island. When sea conditions permit, many tours cruise very close to Egg Rock Light, one of Maine’s most picturesque lighthouses.

seal-watching-with-Lulu

Seal Watching

Seal watching is the best on Lulu. Unlike the larger tour boats, Lulu can slowly and quietly approach the rock ledges where the seals rest at the lower tides. They think Lulu is just another of the hundreds of lobster boats they see every day. So, they are not frightened back into the water and remain on the rocks while Lulu’s passengers delight in watching their activities.

Over 1,000 Visitors Think We're A Catch!

lobster tours in maine

The driver and the guide explained about the lobstering industry and we learned many facts. We went by Egg Rock Lighthouse and saw the seals sunning themselves. They pulled up two traps and found lobsters for us to see and pass around. The time went quickly, but it was a splendid way to spend the afternoon!

Our tour guide (Galen) was awesome. He was so informative about the lobster regulations and very entertaining at the same time. He has a great sense of humor that made the tour tons of fun. Definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn about lobsters!

We had an absolutely wonderful time! We were a little concerned about how cold it might be in October, but we were so interested in what was going on that it was no bother, plus they offer us all blankets! Our tour guides were phenomenal and we learned a great deal about lobstering, but also about the area while taking in the scenery.

lobster tours in maine

The trip was really well worth it! Got to see a lighthouse, male bald eagle and seals sleeping and swimming all around. Then they pull lobster traps up and the boat's guide gives you the whole history of the lobster and all the in's and out's of being a Captain of a lobster boat. Have to do this trip if you visit Bar Harbor, Maine!

Guide to the Best Lobster Boat Tours in Maine

A fun way to get out on the water is on a Maine Lobster Boat and/or Scenic Boat Tour. Departing from seaside villages and harbors are hourly or half day tours aboard authentic Maine lobster boats. Your Captain will take you on a narrated boat ride, show you lobster pots and even haul in a lobster trap for the day’s catch. This will whet your appetite for a  lobster dinner that evening .

You will also see the dramatic Maine coastline as part of your cruise. The Lobster boat tours from Kennebunkport cruise around Walkers Point, the so-called summer White House of former President Bush.

lobstering

Lighthouse boat tours are another fun affordable adventure. The best way to see many of Maine’ s lighthouses is by water, the way sailors do. Your lighthouse tour guide will provide you seafaring legends and lore about  Maine’s historic lighthouses . Boat tours out of Portland bring visitors into Casco Bay, around Bug Light and Portland Headlight – Maine’ s first and foremost lighthouse.

An evening lighthouse cruise is spectacular as the sun sets on the Maine shore. Many charters let you byob so you can enjoy a cocktail cruise and sunset – Maine magic.

Lobster boat tours and Lighthouse tours during the day are more afforadable than a full day schooner sail for example, and typically take an hour or two so they are family friendly – kids will enjoy the boat ride and the chance to see a fisherman catch a real live  Maine lobster .

maine lobster boats

Everyone will appreciate the scenery of the beautiful Maine coastline from the deck of the tour boat. You will find daily and even hourly lobster boat tours and lighthouse boat tours in season in the Maine harbor towns of Kennebunkport, Portland, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Rockland, and Bar Harbor.

Dress accordingly for your boat ride, sneakers or boat shoes, and a jacket or windbreaker as it is often much cooler on the water off shore. Warning, you may be craving a fresh Maine lobster after your boat ride, but that is an easily solved dilemma at any of Maine’s seafood restaurants.

The VisitMaine.Net team is the small team of authors and editors that research and write our in-depth guides throughout the site and update past articles to make sure they're still super valuable to you. We have one goal: to help you fall more in love with the state of Maine!

We then set sail for the Petit Manan Island here you will find a variety of seabirds including the Atlantic Puffin that come to nest every season.   We like to make everyone aware that the Puffin season is mid-May through the end of July, after that they will travel offshore until the next breeding season. It’s time to pull the lobster gear! On our Maine lobster tours, we head out to check some traps, where everything is as hands-on or hands-off as you would like. You will learn about lobsters, as well as the billion-dollar lobster industry. We don’t always catch just lobster, there is a chance for sand dollars, starfish, crabs, fish, and even a sea horse. You will be allowed to keep up to one legal lobster per person.  If time allows a short scenic cruise will finish the trip off.

*6 person max

Lobster Tours Common Questions

It’s typically about 15 degrees colder on the water. Make sure you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, jacket/sweatshirt and rain gear. Wear waterproof shoes or sandals there is chance your feet may get wet. If you have any sort of medications for allergic reactions please bring those with you, as well as your food and drink.

The maximum number of people allowed on our Maine Lobster Tours is six people and each person gets to bring home a lobster!

Hard alcohol is not allowed on board. Beer and wine for those over 21 years old are allowed but the captain may cancel the trip at any time if he feels someone’s behavior is no longer safe for themselves or other passengers. Illegal drugs are prohibited and will result in immediate cancellation. Cancellations due to drugs or alcohol will not result in any form of a refund.

Every person reacts differently to the ocean. If you have never been on the ocean or if you know you get sea sick make sure to take motion sickness pills like Dramamine or Meclizine before arriving at the dock or as the directions state or they will have no effect. Keep in mind alcohol can make the likelihood to be sea sick much higher.

We are adding more boats to our fleet and with the increased bookings we rolled out a very easy to use online booking system where you can schedule your Maine Lobster Tour in a few clicks. This allows Captain Derek to spend his time providing great lobster tour, fishing charter , sunset cruises , and boat tour experiences.

All our charters are private to one group and our pricing is based on per boat versus per person. This is a lobster tour, educational trip, site-seeing cruise, and fun time on the water for you and your family or friends.

Keep in mind our captains have their USCG Masters Captains license .

All prices are per boat NOT per person and only your group will be on the boat. Clients usually tip the same way as they do in a restaurant. 15-20% is the norm if you feel your captain did what he could to make sure you had a fun time on the water. We do our best to go above and beyond for all clients. All trips require a $100 deposit that will be made upon booking your trip through our online booking system.

All cancellations must be made 7 days before the scheduled trip to receive a refund on deposit. If the cancellation is less than 7 days you will not receive a refund for your deposit and you will also be charged for the full charter if we cannot book the cancelled date.

The captain has the right to cancel a trip at any time for weather or mechanical failure. If the trip is canceled before it leaves the dock the trip will be fully refunded if arrangements for another day cannot be made. With your safety in mind rain and cold are not normal grounds for cancelations of trips. If you choose to cancel a trip for your comfort, you will be charged the full trip rate. If a trip is terminated mid trip it will then be charged as an hourly rental rate.

With that said, rain typically is not a reason to cancel a trip as the fish are already wet so they don’t care if it’s raining! We do sometimes make exceptions however for kid’s trips and sunset cruises. The wind/marine forecast is what matters to us.

Haul Lobster Traps, Visit Somes Sound, and See a Seal Colony

Private charter: Have the boat to yourself.

Welcome aboard the Elizabeth T, a real Maine lobster boat!

This excursion is a great experience for the whole family and full of wildlife and local knowledge.

We depart the fishing community of Southwest Harbor aboard the 33’ wooden lobster boat, the Elizabeth T.  First we’ll explore the glacially carved Somes Sound Fjard, where the granite cliffs rise to the surrounding mountain peaks in Acadia National Park. Not only is Somes Sound beautiful but it also abounds in wildlife. Look for seals, porpoise, eagles, osprey and peregrine falcons. From the water you’ll enjoy great views of the grand summer “cottages” owned by wealthy “Rusticators” from Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor. You’ll have excellent photo opportunities of the Bear Island Lighthouse, one of the prettiest lighthouses along the Maine Coast.

Everyone is excited to pull a few lobster traps. We will haul, bait, and explain how the traps work, and discuss the biology of lobsters. Learn how lobstermen are protecting this thriving industry while harvesting 120 million pounds of lobster annually. At $4 per pound that is nearly half a billion dollars fueling the coastal Maine communities. Most lobsters migrate closer or further from shore depending on the seasons. They may move up to 5 or 6 miles in a year, going closer to shore in warm weather, and offshore for stable, deeper water in late fall. In May the abundance of Lobsters close to shore is still low.

Heading east we will look for a breeding pair of bald eagles. East Bunker Ledge is a favorite spot for watching seals as they swim, fish and sunbathe on the rocks. We’ll cruise home past the Cranberry Islands, where a 200-year old fishing village continues to thrive by the ways of the sea.

Our shared tours are well suited to children and adults. They are safe and comfortable as we stay within the protected calm waters of Great Harbor and the Cranberry Islands. Seasickness is extremely rare. The Elizabeth T is fitted with canvas to keep passengers dry and warm when the conditions are not optimal.

What do I wear?

Dress as you would for walking around town, and bring an extra sweater/sweatshirt and a windbreaker with you. Also useful is a baseball-style cap with visor, sunglasses (polarized are best), and sunscreen. Don’t forget your camera. If you’re on the fence about shorts versus long pants… go with the long pants.

If you cancel within the 48 hour period or fail to show up at boarding, you will be responsible for the full amount of the charter/cruise. Weather related cancellations will be determined by the Captain. If your charter/cruise is cancelled due to weather and we are unable to reschedule the trip to your satisfaction, you will not be charged.

Maine Lobster Boat Tour | Things to Do in Portland, Maine

hauling up lobster trap

Hauling up a lobster trap.

maine lobster boat tour

When the breeding female is first caught by a commercial lobsterman, she’s also given a “v-notch” on her tail flipper to identify and protect her as a known breeder. That way, even when her eggs have hatched, the notch will tell other lobstermen of her breeder status, so they’ll know to put her back. This notching practice dates back to the early 1900s!

Our lady lobster did not yet have a v-notch, so Captain Dave gave her one. This lobster boat tour was a working tour! It is always on the first tail flipper to the right of the middle flipper.

The v-notch on the breeding female lobster's tail tells other lobstermen of the breeder's status so they'll know she's off-limits.

Let’s talk Maine lobster: All you need to know about Maine’s lobster shacks, lobster festivals, lobsterboat races, and lobsterboat tours

Take a lobster cruise with Capt. Tom Martin aboard the Lucky Catch, out of Portland, and you'll learn everything there is to know about lobsters and see a few lighthouses, too. Hilary Nangle photo.

Maine lobster is world renowned, and you can enjoy it a gazillion ways.

Eating it, of course, is the biggie (with so many options —baked, broiled, boiled, stuffed, and even fried—for starters), but don’t stop there.

Attend a festival celebrating the bugs (as nicknamed by lobstermen), or watch races between lobsterboats ( fierce competition), or cruise aboard one and learn about and perhaps take part in how the tasty crustaceans are caught. Better yet, do it all.

Maine lobster shacks

Now I think the best way to enjoy lobster is in the rough at a lobster shack. You can get down and dirty and dig in with abandon, savoring the succulent meat and enjoying the experience of eating outdoors on a wharf or seaside deck. As you eat, watch lobstermen unload their catches or bait and fuel their boats, and listen to seagulls beg. Even better, at many, you can bring all the necessary go-withs, from tablecloths and flowers to wine and cheese. Here are my favorite Maine coast lobster shacks .

Maine lobster festivals

Rockland, Maine, is home to the annual Maine Lobster Festival. ©Hilary Nangle

Maine has three lobster festivals that are worth planning a visit around.

Maine Lobster Festival

The big kahoona is the Maine Lobster Festival , in Rockland. This is isn’t just a chow-down but a full-blown festival, with crownings and parades, fun races and games, exhibits, arts and crafts, music, and, of course, lobster (we’re talking more than 17,000 pounds served). Plan well ahead; it’ll take a miracle to arrive in town and find an empty hotel/motel room or even a campsite. Always the first weekend in August.

Winter Harbor Lobster Festival

Far smaller is the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival , in Winter Harbor, on the Schoodic Peninsula and near the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park. An event highlight is the annual lobsterboat race, with 13 classes rated by size and power. Other activities include a road race, large craft fair , parade, and, of course, a chow-down lobstah dinnah with all the trimmings. Festival is free; there’s a charge for dinner. Always the second Saturday in August.

Frenchboro Lobster Festival

Tiniest, but perhaps biggest in local pride, is the annual Frenchboro Lobster Festival , a one-day fund-raising shindig that requires a special ferry boat run from Bass Harbor, on Mount Desert Island. Frenchoboro, by the way, is great to visit anytime. Always the second Saturday in August.

Maine lobsterboat races

2022 Maine Lobster Race Scedule

NASCAR, schmasscar, in Maine real men and women race lobsterboats, replacing the chug-a-lug engines with souped up vroooommmers ! Competitors take these races very seriously, and there are classes rated by size and power. .

Lucky Catch

Join Capt. Tom Martin aboard the Lucky Catch , operating from Portland’s waterfront and  you might even catch your own dinner. You can purchase any lobsters caught during the cruise at boat price and have them cooked at a nearby restaurant. Even if you don’t catch any, you’ll fill-up on lobster trivia and have a blast.

How to measure a lobster to see if it's legal

Lulu Lobster Boat

The Lulu operates from Bar Harbor. Like the others, you’ll learn The Truth about lobsters, every little detail (including lobster boxing) you may (or may not) wish to know. The captain hauls a few lobster pots and demonstrates how to use a carapace to measure a lobster to determine whether it’s legal—a keepah ! Kids love this trip, but adults are equally enthralled.

Every year, lobstermen race their boats in fishing harbors along the Maine Coast. Tom Nangle photo

Any suggestions for mailing lobsters? My favorite, 3 sons, is closed.

Keep up the great writing.

You’ll find plenty of options here: http://www.lobsterfrommaine.com/dealercompare.aspx

We are heading to Boothbay Harbor the end of August and are looking for off the beaten path places to eat, visit, see. Do you have some suggestions for us? We will be heading to both Rockland and Portland for dinner at our favorite spots but are unfamiliar with the not so touristy spots in the vicinity. Thank you in advance for any suggestions

Apologies, I think I missed this one. There’s not too much off the beaten path in the Boothbays, but Bet’s Famous Fish Fry, on the Boothbay Village Green, is a must for takeout fish and chips; Baker’s Way is a funky hole-in-the-wall (you can eat in the garden behind it) that’s great for sticky buns in the morning as well as Vietnamese food; Ocean Point Inn is the place for fabulous sunsets. Ports of Italy and the deck of the Boat House Bistro are both well known, but worth it. New in town is the Boothbay Craft Brewery —I’ve yet to visit, but I’m hearing good things.

My husband and I are flying into Portland Maine (our first visit) on Sept 15. We are only in town for 3 days and we want to enjoy eating lobster and seafood and to see as much as Portland and surrounding areas as possible. Where would you recommend we eat lunch/dinner (we will have a rental car) and if you can think of anything as a “must do or see” in the three days we will be visiting, what are some of your favorite places? We love the outdoors, we’re willing to drive a couple of hours and we’re very excited about our upcoming trip!!

September is a beautiful time to visit Maine. For lobster: Head out to Two Lights Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth; Portland Lobster Co., on the waterfront, also does a good job. For must-see/do, there are so many, depending upon your interest. Shameless promo: Pick up a copy of my new, 2013 edition, Moon Coastal Maine guidebook. I cover Greater Portland in depth as well as other locations all along the coast. You can easily day trip from the Kennebunks to Bath, although frankly, there’s likely plenty to keep you quite busy just in Greater Portland (Freeport/So. Portland/Cape Elizabeth) and the Casco Bay islands. Have fun!

My husband and I are flying into Bangor and know we want to go to Bar Harbor. He wants to eat lots of lobster! Any suggestions for stops or other directions in 5 days?!

Check out my post on my favorite lobster shacks, but be sure to call before visiting as the no-frills on-the-docks shacks usually cut back hours (and sometimes close for the season) at this time of year. Hug the coastline, and you’ll find lobster served nearly everywhere.

Hilary I am a teacher from SC and Maine is a MUST SEE state for me. I’ve loved reading your posts and saved your 10 day itinerary from an article. This article eventually was helpful in getting me to this blog.. If I visit in June or July, what am I missing as compared to September or October? I am trying to plan whether to come when I’m off work and stay longer or take some days and visit in September/October..

Hi Deb, The weather tends to be more reliable in September or October, but late August, if you can swing that, is also a great time. June to early July can be buggy, depending upon where you’re traveling in the state, and also wetter and foggier, but that’s not set in stone–you might have a week of warm, dry sun. If you’re a fan of gardens, June and July are when most are in bloom–not much prettier than a seaside garden. And if you’re thinking of visiting offshore islands, summer months tend to offer more opportunities. A lot of variables, I’m afraid. H.

Hillary: thanks for all the great information-I want to visit Maine and eat my fill of lobster and steamers(maybe a few fried clams too) and your site is so helpful. I was hoping to find inexpensive lodging for my wife and I plus some “off the beaten path” lobster shacks with views of lobster boats, fisherman, etc! thanks again! Rob

Hi Rob, hope you found my Cheap Sleeps pages for inexpensive digs. Have a great trip.
