Your ultimate guide to the Pyrenees wine region

Your ultimate guide to the Pyrenees wine region

Just a two-hour drive from Melbourne, as soon as you arrive in the Pyrenees you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Sharing its name with the famous mountain range which sits between France and Spain, with sweeping mountain vistas and a plethora of attractions  this tiny region is steeped in history and majestic views.  From Victoria’s first official gold mine discovery to four national parks offering both hiking and mountain biking tracks, this region offers something for everyone.

The Pyrenees is also home to a small but highly acclaimed wine region, nestled amongst the stunning mountain ranges. This magnificent natural environment produces unique microclimates perfect for winemaking. The regions first vineyards were planted in 1858 and there are now around 40 wineries in the area producing exceptional wines, including our very own award-winning estate, Dalwhinnie.

Read on to explore some of the top things to do in the area – after visiting the Dalwhinnie cellar door to stock up on delicious local wines of course!

Things to do

1. A visit to the Pyrenees would not be complete without a total immersion in nature. Mount Cole State Forest is a bushwalker’s haven, with over 15km of walking tracks. Meander (or power!) through thick forest bursting with local flora and fauna, broken up by a vast expanse of alpine plateau.

After a fun-filled day in the fresh forest air, unwind and share a bottle (or two) of the delicious 2021 Mesa Chardonnay  with your loved ones.

2. Make sure to spend an afternoon wandering around St Arnaud – a historic gold mining town surrounded by sheep farms and vineyards. Take in the picturesque main street lined with old pubs and shops with beautiful facades featuring ornate cast-iron lacework.

After getting your steps in exploring this delightful old country town, treat yourself to a glass of the impeccable 2016 Moonambel Cabernet Sauvignon .

3.  For an incredibly unique taste of rural Victorian history, you cannot miss the annual Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally. The event will be in its 120th year in 2023 and showcases a huge collection of restored steam engines, steam rollers, farm tractors, vintage engines and restored vintage homewares.

Match your vintage experience with a vintage wine – try the seriously impressive 2013 The Pinnacle Shiraz   to finish your day on a high.

4. If you like spectacular views and a good challenge, make sure to lace up your hiking boots and walk the 10km Ben Nevis track, which traverses the Northern end of the Pyrenees range. You may even see a native wedgetail eagle soaring or spot a popular local hobby – a hang glider!

After a hard hike, make sure to reward yourself with a glass of 2015 The Eagle Shiraz . You may recognise the eagle on the front, the very same wedgetail you hopefully saw on your walk.

5. Get your heart rate up and cycle your way through over 20km worth of forest tracks on a self-guided winery tour. Warning: These tracks include some steep terrain to really earn your tastings!

Once you’re safely back at your accommodation, cool off with a cold glass of the divine 2020 Moonambel Chardonnay .

6. The  Pyrenees Unearthed festival is an annual event which celebrates the incredible wineries of this tiny region. If you are lucky enough to be in the area when the festival is on, you will be able to taste through some of the best Pyrenees wines, all in one location.

After a big day out tasting local wines, change things up with a bottle of the Dalwhinnie 2020 Three Valleys Pinot Noir from cool-climate Tasmania.

7. Every Saturday morning from April to November, the old courthouse grounds in Beaufort come to life with the hustle and bustle of the local markets. Stalls are filled to the brim with fresh local produce and artisanal goods from producers and growers in the area.

Shop for some local goodies to take back to your accommodation and cook a delicious warm and hearty winter meal to pair with our 2016 Moonambel Shiraz .

8. The picturesque Ferntree Falls in Mount Buangor State Park is a magical waterfall situated amongst a fairytale scene full of towering ferns and giant mossy boulders. An easy walking track with a 250m path each way gets you there in no time.

Pack a picnic full of local cheese, meats, dips and bread and enjoy the stunning scenery with a glass of the Dalwhinnie 2019 Mesa Shiraz .

Best of Northern Spain

Having a great guide made all of the difference. Fredy Hernando was enthusiastic, funny, engaging, and professional at the same time. He is from Spain and knew so many details only someone originally from Spain would know. He always made sure everyone was accounted for and comfortable. The Best of Northern Spain itinerary was great. From the big city Madrid to the smaller cities San Sebastian and Lograno and other stops. All of the cities were well thought out including the farm house stay in the Pyreness mountains next to a river and the hike in the mountains. We definitely recommend G-Adventures Best of Northern Spain.

The route was frankly ridiculous, way to long ,the way I made it was by not doing gravel, but state roads, not what I wanted but the only way to get from hotel to hotel. Also I did climb the 1500meter mountain between France and Spain, it was a challenge and you mentioning age group to 90 years old is deceiving. But I had a challenging great time, just what I signed up for

pyrenees wine tour

Take a walk in the sun-kissed region of the Pyrenees,  UNESCO sites, and get ready for a life filled with happiness, excellent wines, and first-class local cuisine.

A Must-Visit for Any True Oenophile

From mountain hideaways or organic farms among castles and rustic villages to finally finding Salvelinus’ favorite vineyards, tastings, and wineries.

Protected by the foothills of the Pyrenees, Somontano is the result of a successful mix of tradition, wine, gastronomy, and culture. Few territories in Spain meet such exceptional conditions for grape cultivation and wine production. An altitude of 350 m (1,150 ft) to 750 m (2,460 ft) above sea-level, drastic changes in temperature due to its proximity to the Pyrenees, and a climate halfway between Atlantic and Mediterranean produce balanced and aromatic fruity wines. Created in 1984, Somontano’s Designation of Origin includes 43 municipalities, including Barbastro, the epicenter of Somontano, and around 30 wineries. Prestigious grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Sirah rule the red wine production while they recover local varieties such as Moristrel or Parraleta. In whites, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer dominate the region.

Costers del Segre

Located on the north-eastern coast of Spain, in the province of Lleida, Costers del Segre is a Designation of Origin directly linked to the banks of the Segre river. Fragmented into seven sub-regions, most vineyards are grown in the Segre’s basin, which originates in the Pyrenees and flows into the Ebro River.  Although the Designation of Origin was created in the eighties, it has rapidly evolved since then, incorporating international grape varieties, adopting modern winemaking techniques, and creating specific subregions which converge in the diversity of elaborated wines. It is possible to find reds of each one of the noble grapes – Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tempranillo – and wines of mixed grapes. White wines made of Parellada and Macabeo or varietals of Chardonnay. Rosé wines and also sparkling wines made of Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada.

Where is the Pyrenees wine region?

This lovely wine-producing region is located in western Victoria , on Australia's southern coast. The Pyrenees region is only 158 kilometers northwest of Melbourne and takes about two hours to reach. The area is close to the town of Avoca. With altitudes ranging from 300 to over 750 meters above sea level, the Pyrenees mountain ranges cover the southern end of the Great Dividing Range. Mount Avoca, at 747 meters, is the highest point in the range. The region is delimited on the southwest by the town of Avoca, on the north by St Arnaud, on the west by Stawell, and on the southwest by Ararat.

History of the Pyrenees wine region

The Pyrenees region shares its name with the French wine region between France and Spain because early French settlers perceived a likeness in the craggy mountain range with the French Midi-Pyrenees. The first vines were planted in 1858, but the region was re-established in 1960 when Remy Martin, a French brandy maker, opened a modest winery near Avoca. Until the end of the twentieth century, the region was known for producing high-quality wines. In June 2000, the Pyrenees wine area was granted Geographic designation. The region is home to notable wineries, the majority of which are family-run.

The terroir and geography of the Pyrenees wine region

With its various microclimates and brown loamy sands, the Pyrenees wine area is suitable for vines creating earthy flavors in wines. During the spring and early summer, there is a significant temperature variation between morning and night, allowing grapes to develop uniformly. The region receives plenty of sunlight and rainfall throughout the year, with minimal rain during the growing season necessitating significant irrigation. The soil consists primarily of grey-brown loamy sands. To make the soil lighter, winegrowers typically add gypsum and lime. The vines planted range in elevation from 117 to over 450 meters above sea level.

Popular grape varieties from the Pyrenees wine region

The major grape varieties of the Pyrenees wine region are Cabernet Sauvignon for red and Sauvignon Blanc for white. Other grape varieties grown in the region are Chardonnay , Shiraz , Merlot , Nebbiolo , Viognier, Pinot Noir , Pinot Gris , and Riesling.  The red wines specially made from Cabernet Sauvignon have sumptuously rich mid-palate, with flavors ranging from mint to black fruits, as well as earthy qualities that develop during age.

Food to pair with Pyrenees wine

Carpetbag steak.

Carpetbag Steak is one of the noble dishes which gained popularity in Australia and Newzealand during the mid-20th century. The dish had been a working-class dish in a historic fishing village in South Wales, United Kingdom. The dish usually comprises boneless beef steak and raw fresh Oysters. Oysters are encased in a pocketed thick cut of rib-eye steak. The stuffed steak is then sealed with skewers which are seared in a pan or grilled depending on preference. It is usually served with steak placed upright along the sauce. A strip of bacon and hash potatoes also come along with the Carpetbag Steak. The dish goes well with red wines from the Pyrenees wine region.

Chicken Parma

This savory meal, also known as Chicken Parmigiana, Chicken Parmesan, or Chicken Parmy, is one of Australia's most popular foods. Breadcrumbs coat the boneless chicken, which is then cooked in heated oil until golden brown. After that, the fried chicken is topped with cheese and tomato sauce before being thoroughly baked. Despite its name's resemblance to Italian culture, the dish originated in America. This dish is available at every pub in Australia, along with salads and fries. If you are in pub around Australia enjoying wines from the Pyrenees, now you know what to order.

Roasted Lamb

Lamb is a versatile meat that may be enjoyed as a special treat throughout the year. Many flavors accompany lamb, so experiment with various herbs, spices, and condiments to enhance the flavor of your choice.

Pyrenees wines complement roasted lamb dishes such as rack of lamb, leg of lamb, or lamb cutlets.

Spaghetti Jaffle

A spaghetti jaffle is a type of sandwich that can be found in both Australia and Japan. It usually includes spaghetti, bread, butter, cheese, and a sauce (often tomatoes and onions). You can either cook the spaghetti al dente or just use your leftover ones. The spaghetti is cooked with the sauce and the bread is buttered and has a slice of the spaghetti on top. The pieces of bread are then joined to make a sandwich, which usually just needs to be heated until it's golden brown. It can also be grilled until crispy if preferred. Pairs well with Pyrenees wine.

Chiko Rolls are the Australian version of the popular Chinese spring roll or egg roll. This tasty snack consists of a thin wrapper, made from flour and eggs. It is filled with vegetables, vegetables, and spices for an authentic taste! Chiko rolls are usually deep-fried in oil, but they can also be boiled or steamed. Chiko rolls are sold in most fish and chip shops, and their history stretches back over 60 years. They were invented by Frank McEnroe and given their name "chicken roll" as they originally didn't contain any actual chicken! It is very tasty and pairs well with wines from the Pyrenees.

Salt and Pepper Calamari

Salt and Pepper Calamari – A popular dish in China, this one is inspired by Australia instead. The calamari or squid has a crisp salt-and-pepper breading deep fried until it’s golden brown. The dish is often prepared and served as a bar or pub snack. It's often garnished with garlic, fried chili, and spring onions. It pairs well with Pyrenees wines.

Places to visit in the Pyrenees wine region

Mount buangor state park.

Just 60 km west of Ballarat, the Mount Buangor State part is spread across 2400 hectares with diverse landscapes including eucalypt forests, creek flats, waterfalls, peaks, and a lot of walking trails. The park is also a part of the cultural landscape of the Eastern Maar. Mount Buangor is the highest point in the park that offers spectacular views of the surroundings. The park is well connected with 15 kilometers of walking trail and various spots for camping. If you are a nature lover, don't forget to visit this amazing park.

Pyrenees State Forest

The Pyrenees State Forest is home to a variety of wildlife sightings, lush woods, jagged mountain ranges, vivid wildflowers, and historic sites. This lovely neighborhood is the ideal balance of culture and nature. The principal attractions of the forest include the Waterfall's Picnic Area, Pyrenees Endurance Walk, Ebling Track Walk, Sugarloaf Walk, and Governor Lookout. The forest, which is up to 800 meters high, is home to a variety of vegetation and fauna. The woodland is home to around 100 bird species and 200 plant species.

Avoca Chinese Garden

Avoca's Garden of Fire and Water is a great discovery in the Pyrenees. Reflecting the Chinese heritage within the region, Avoca’s Garden of Fire and Water represents and acknowledges the early contributions of Chinese immigrants to Avoca during its gold rush era in 1850-1870. From the entrance garden, you can see a scholar rock in the distance glistening with a water droplet. Scholar rock is a nice and natural formation of rocks and it is particularly significant to people who have an interest in Chinese history. Avoca provides guided tours of the Garden of Fire and Water, which gives an insightful perspective into the strong connection between Chinese settlers and the Pyrenees. Avoca’s Garden of Fire and Water provides a beautiful venue for weddings, special occasions, and events; and it is a picturesque stop for a day in the Pyrenees.

Gallery 127

Gallery 127 is the go-to place for art lovers in the region. Located in a heritage railway station building, it features monthly solo exhibitions by internationally recognized and respected artists. Local history displays, workshops, artist studio spaces, and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm - where commuters can buy vegetables, fruits, and herbs and then pick them up on the platform - are all present at the station.

Find a Winery Australia

Pyrenees wine region.

The Pyrenees Wine Region is located in the Western Victoria Zone and includes wineries and vineyards surrounding the towns of Avoca, Lexton, St Arnaud, Talbot, Redbank, Moonambel, Landsborough and Navarre. The Avoca River flows north-south through the region and the township of Avoca lies at the heart of the region. The climate is generally temperate with some variations due to altitude. Sunshine hours are high and rainfall is often very limited during the growing season making irrigation all but essential. The warm summer temperatures and high sunshine hours produce fully ripe grapes with character and depth as the cooler night-time temperatures extend the ripening process. It is this combination of high sunshine hours, daytime heat and cool nights that is significant in distinguishing 'Pyrenees' from other regions. Most of the vineyards are located on the lower slopes of the ranges. The Soils are generally acidic, sandy loams with quartz grains, a are mostly well drained. Vineyards were first planted in the area as early as 1848 but these plantings did not survive. The modern redevelopment was began in the 1960s by the French Remy Martin group established vineyards initially to produce brandy. Later they also produced sparkling and table wines at Chateau Remy, (now Blue Pyrenees Estate). Recently other major players have entered the area including the well-known Taltarni, Redbank, Mount Avoca and Warrenmang as well as smaller vineyards and wineries. There are more than 50 vineyards in the Pyrenees Region growing more than 20 varieties of grapes, but the region's strength is in its Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. The Pyrenees Wine Region includes two districts : Avoca Victoria ; Moonambel

Khabarovsk, Russia

You are here, about khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk is one of the most significant and beautiful cities of Russia's Far East. It stands on the right bank of the Amur River along the scenic Trans-Siberian railway and almost touches the Chinese border.

The city of Khabarovsk played a crucial role in East - Russian history and is famous for its historic sights, monuments of architecture of different eras, religious buildings, lovely parks, gardens, and artificial lakes which surprise its visitors with impressive fountain shows.

Khabarovsk History

Founded in 1858, the city is now loved by Chinese travelers and those who are going on iconic train journeys along the world's longest railway from Siberia. After days of relentless taiga, people reach this vibrant city with multiple attractions, plenty of historical sights from the tsarist-era, and a number of places to try traditional Russian cuisine. Khabarovsk is indeed a charming city that deserved to be on your travel itinerary. Especially, if you are the legendary Trans-Siberian is on your travel radar.

We suggest beginning your Khabarovsk tour from the famous monument erected in honor of Nikolay Muravyov - Amursky, one of the best-known explorer of East Siberia, a general, and the founder of the city.

Continue your Khabarovsk trip with a riverside walk along the picturesque Nevelsky Embankment and pass through the third tallest church (35 feet) in all Russia - Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral standing on top of a hill. Take in the spectacular location and view of this Cathedral and its classic golden domes, dominating the city skyline and being visible from a large distance.

Your Trans-Siberian itinerary would become even better if you include a visit to the famous Khabarovsk Bridge as well. The railway bridge goes over the Amur River and is considered to be the longest bridge on the Trans-Siberian route.

Best Things to Do in Khabarovsk

  • Stop by the Nikolay Muravyov - Amursky monument

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
