• Qaqortoq means “white” in the Greenlandic language. Its Danish name was Julianehåb, after the Danish queen Juliane Marie, when it was a colony.
• Qaqortoq is the only town in Greenland with a fountain in its main square. The fountain in Qaqortoq is a gathering place
• The first football field in Greenland with artificial turf was officially opened in Qaqortoq in 2009. The Qaqortoq stadium was turfed with the assistance of FIFA and the town was chosen because it is free of snow for a longer period of the year than other places in Greenland. Useful information

Qaqortoq has three large supermarkets – Pisiffik, Brugseni and Akiki – as well as several smaller convenience stores.

To buy souvenirs, visit Greenland Sagalands where they have an extensive selection. You can also purchase sealskin products directly from the Great Greenland showroom on the other side of the harbour, skin care products from locally-owned InuaCare, or buy directly from locals who set up stalls outside Sagalands whenever cruise ships are in Qaqortoq. The museum and the Hotel Qaqortoq also have a small selection, and you never know what you might find at Jaaraartooq Café Shop near the heliport.

For outdoor adventures, it is best to bring as much of your own gear with you to Greenland. It is possible to purchase limited, basic camping supplies at Sissami by the bridge or you can rent equipment from the Blue Ice Café in Narsarsuaq .

How to get to Qaqortoq

Although it is the biggest town in South Greenland , it is not possible to reach Qaqortoq directly … yet. A new airport is scheduled to open in 2023 which will allow a broader range of flights to Qaqortoq. In the meantime, visitors must first arrive at the international airport in Narsarsuaq and then take either a helicopter or boat transfer to Qaqortoq.

For those who prefer to arrive by sea, many of the cruise ships that visit Greenland each year call into port in Qaqortoq, and the town is the southernmost port for the Sarfaq Ittuk passenger ferry that runs all the way to Ilulissat .

The best times to visit are June – September (sailing, hiking, fishing) when the tourist information centre is open and most of the excursions run. Helicopter excursions are available all year, but otherwise visitors must be self-sufficient during the winter.

How to get around in Qaqortoq

Qaqortoq is a very walkable town with most attractions clustered around the harbour and main square. However, if your accommodation is located up one of the town’s impressive hills, there are also taxis to help you get around.

For excursions in the area, the most common way to get around is with a boat, helicopter (all year) or on foot (summer), and with a snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes (winter, if you have your own equipment).

Where to sleep in Qaqortoq

Qaqortoq has a range of accommodation available - from a 4-star hotel with conference facilities, to self-contained apartments, to multi-bed dormitories with shared facilities. All of the accommodation is within walking distance of the centre, though some options are located in the neighbourhoods located up Qaqortoq's steep hills. It is also possible to stay on nearby sheep farms and enjoy the hospitality of several of Greenland's farmers.

Things to do in Qaqortoq

Qaqortoq is a hub for excursions throughout South Greenland. Sailing is the most common way to explore the area with day trips to the well-preserved Norse ruins of Hvalsey Church and centralised farm (15 ruins in total) at Qaqortukulooq, the experimental farm and research station Upernaviarsuk, the Greenland ice sheet, and the hot springs at Uunartoq the most popular amongst visitors.

An alternate way to visit these sites, as well as the other Norse ruins at Qassiarsuk, Igaliku , and in the Tasikuluulik area; several WWII sites; and the spectacular Tasermiut Fjord near Nanortalik ; is with a scenic helicopter excursion from Qaqortoq. There are several options available ranging from 20 minutes to 6 hours, but each offers unparalleled views of the dramatic landscape and a way to visit these attractions if you are short on time.

Keen fishers will also enjoy the fjords and pristine rivers around Qaqortoq. Buy a fishing license at the Tourist Information Centre and arrange a trip to fish for the arctic char , salmon and cod that are abundant during the months of July and August.

While you are in Qaqortoq, get your bearings and discover the historical centre of the town on a guided city walk. During the tour, you will pass by Greenland’s oldest fountain, Mindebrønde, and several of the pieces that make up the open-air “Stone and Man” exhibition instigated by Aka Høegh. This ambitious sculpture project was initiated by the Greenlandic artist in the mid-1990s who invited artists from all of the Nordic countries to contribute. The result was 40 sculptures hidden around Qaqortoq, many of which are carved directly into rock faces.

Across the harbour lies the Great Greenland tanning and production facilities. You can visit the showroom independently to see their finished products and buy souvenirs, but if you want an insight into the processes involved in producing high-quality sealskin for distribution within Greenland and internationally, join a guided tour that will take you behind the scenes.

Top things to do in Qaqortoq

Hot springs

Self-guided activities in qaqortoq.

There are no specific hiking tours from Qaqortoq, even though the surrounding backcountry offers wonderful off-trail routes. The two most popular day-hikes are to climb to the top of Saqqaarsuk, just behind Sulisartut Højskoliat for spectacular views over Qaqortoq and its surrounding fjords, or hike around Lake Tasersuaq (the local water supply). For long-distance hikers, the five-day hike to the Norsemen’s old Episcopal residence at the sheep farming settlement of Igaliku will take you through a landscape filled with hidden ruins, and straight past the impressive and unmissable Hvalsey Church .

If you’d like to take a day off from outdoor adventure, visit Qaqortoq’s large Gertrud Rask’s church and then shop for ingredients at the supermarket to enjoy a picnic soaking up the atmosphere in Qaqortoq’s town square. Local residents often do exactly this, sitting at the picnic benches that are arranged along the pedestrian walkway near the famous Qaqortoq fountain and basking in the sunshine as they eat.

Once you are done eating, visit the Qaqortoq Museum – the large black building that borders the plaza. Housed in the town’s oldest building it hosts traveling exhibitions as well as several permanent collections, including a display of fantastical tupilaks created by master carvers – Aron and Cecilie Kleist. These stunning pieces of art are widely regarded as some of the best in all of Greenland and there is at least one book (in Danish and English) dedicated to their work.

Across the road, you will find a Viking exhibit, and if you’re up for walking up a hill, the TELE Museum teaches about the history of radio communication. It also offers a wonderful view back over Qaqortoq and out to sea.

Colorful houses and friendly people

Qaqortoq, Greenland.

A solitary iceberg appeared outside our window, followed by the hazy outline of Greenland’s rocky coastline.  It gets light early, around 5 am, allowing us to enjoy the coastline as we approached Qaqortog.  We docked around 10 am.

The Nieuw Statendam stopped about 1 mile offshore in a calm harbor.  We had smooth seas, no fog, and a light breeze, tendering should be quick and easy.   We arrived around 10 am and our tenders were in the water soon thereafter.  The Nieuw Statendam was cleared by local authorities in about 15 minutes.

Qaqortoq is a small town, with only a few excursions available.  Everything was already booked when we scheduled this cruise so we decided to spend a couple of hours exploring the town.

Tender tickets were required until 11:10 am when they announced open tendering.  We left our cabin around 1 pm and caught the 1:15 pm tender.  We were ashore 5 minutes after the tender left the ship.

There is a Tourist Information Office next to the tender pier.  It also houses a gift shop offering jewelry, T-shirts, and other souvenirs.  They accept USD and credit cards.  While USD is accepted, the exchange rate is very unfavorable.   For example, something that would cost $2.78 if you paid in Kroners, would cost $3 if you paid in USD.

Outside the Tourist Center, there were about 5-6 tables of vendors selling various crafts.  One person was offering 90-minute walking tours for $50 USD.  We headed off to the right on our own to start our big loop of the town.

During my research into this port, I learned that a nearby bar/restaurant had a car that was built into an exterior wall facing the street.   You can still see it on Google Street View – Here is a screenshot.

This same bar claimed to have the longest bar in Greenland.  Unfortunately, the bar was closed so we couldn’t peek inside to learn how long the longest bar may have been.

We ran into the most interesting man in Qaqortoq,  his name was McGraw, and we had a wonderful chat.  He explained that the car in the wall we were looking for was removed 3 years ago when the bar changed hands.  Everyone we met in Qaqortog was very friendly.

A short walk uphill from the bar was the town Post Office called Tassus and a little further was the grocery store/department store called Brugesni.  It was like a small Target or Walmart with a grocery section on one side and hard goods on the other side.  Most of the signs were in Danish, so having the Google translate app on our phone was helpful.  There is a restroom inside near the front door.

We picked up a fake potted orchid for our room along with some chocolate-covered licorice.  They accept VISA/Mastercard.

Outside the Qaqortoq Hotel there is a large Inuit Boot on a small hill – which makes for some great photos and the local children seem to enjoy climbing the rocks.

Our next stop was the Qaqortoq Museum.  Admission was 60 DK ($8.24) or $10 USD if you didn’t have Kroners.  They also accept credit cards.  There are 3 buildings as part of the museum that are included in the price, but the other two were already closed by the time we arrived.  If you want to see everything this museum has to offer, go here first.  The main attraction was on the third floor which had the room Charles Lindbergh used when he was visiting while scouting possible refueling stops for Pan Am.  We spent about 30 minutes here.

Outside the museum is the Mindebrønden fountain, completed in 1932, and is the oldest fountain in Greenland.  It depicts whales spouting water out of their blowholes.

Nearby the fountain was a store, Sissami, selling camping and other outdoor gear.

Gas is only $2.40 USD a gallon.

At the end of our loop we were back at the Tourist Information Center.  We didn’t find any interesting T shirts or caps and ended up only buying a keychain as a souvenir.

We were back on the ship around 5 pm.

The weather was nice during the SailAway and we spotted several icebergs as we headed toward Prince Christian Sound.

Hyperion Night was the headliner in the World Stage tonight.  Once again he put on a dazzling performance.  Unlike other pianists you may see as guest entertainers, Hyperion is not only a fantastic pianist, he is a great entertainer.   His shows strike the perfect balance between playing the piano and commentary.  His shows take you on a musical journey that is compelling.  Tonight he talked about the trials and tribulations of Russian composers and discussed the age old question of who was better – the Beatles or the Stones.  As a bonus, he is quite friendly and approachable and mingles with the audience before and after his shows.

Tomorrow we will cruise the scenic Prince Christian Sound.

Why Visit Qaqortoq?

Qaqortoq’s History & Culture

Annaasisitta Oqaluffia

Founded in 1775 by Norwegian trader and explorer Anders Olsen, Qaqortoq holds an intriguing and storied past. Settled since prehistoric times, the village was first inhabited by the Saqqaq people, more than 4,000 years ago, and then the Dorset people from Nunavut, Canada, almost 3,000 years ago. The Norse and Thule people followed, before Olsen colonized the town, deeming it “Julianehåb”.

Immerse yourself in the rich Norse and Inuit history of the village and surrounding area, with visits to ancient ruins, including a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Venture to the old church, Annaasisitta Oqaluffia, located in the center of town and dating back to the early 1800s. Here, you can take photos of this classic harborside red-and-white church and learn about the history of Christianity in Greenland.

Hvalsey Church Ruins

There’s more history to be uncovered. Hop aboard a boat from the harbor and take the one-hour scenic ride over the famous Hvalsey Church Ruins, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The ruins date back to the 12th century and are the best-preserved near Qaqortoq.

They are just one of five areas with three main sites (Hvalsey, Igaliku, and Qassiarsuk) designated within the Kujataa historical sites, an example of agricultural practices in the subarctic climate during that time. The main church and horse stables made of stone sit as a reminder of this gathering place known as the “Eastern Settlement ” for the Norse people.

Head to Qassiarsuk to explore another famous historic site. Travel by helicopter or boat to set foot on the same land that Viking explorers Erik the Red and his son, Leif Eriksson, both walked in ancient times.

A reconstructed Viking longhouse and Tjodhilde’s Church, the first Christian church built in North America, rest in the Tunulliarfik Fjord. Wander through Erik the Red’s residence in the Viking colony; the Brattahlid ruins date all the way back to the 10th century.

Modern Qaqortoq is the fourth-largest town in Greenland and a very social village with a friendly and hardworking culture and an Evangelical Lutheran faith. Historically a center for saddle-back seal trade, this seaport village is also known for fishing and shrimping, tanning, ship maintenance, and educational services.

Tips for Visiting Qaqortoq

In a small village such as Qaqortoq, it’s easy to fit a lot into one day, if you’re sticking close to town. The heart of the village is very walkable, providing an ideal opportunity to stroll through the colonial-era buildings, take a photo tour, visit museums and restaurants, and observe the views with just a short walk up the surrounding hills.

If you’re venturing out of town, it’s wise to allow for a half-day or full day depending on tours that you choose to explore nearby Norse ruins, hot springs, or hiking trails.

Wildlife and Nature

Lake Tasersuaq

You can expect wild, untouched nature surrounding Qaqortoq. This Arctic tundra has an extensive fjord system, with breathtaking coves and wildlife such as seals, and fin and humpback whales.

On land, you might spot reindeer, Arctic foxes, or snow hares while hiking. The display of wildflowers in the summer months is one of pure beauty, especially against a backdrop of distant glaciers and giant icebergs.

Hiking enthusiasts will find myriad trails leading to scenic viewpoints of the fjords, glacial lakes, and farmland. Venture to one of the most accessible trails from the center of town, where a six-mile loop trail showcases the best of the Arctic tundra.

Take in views of the vibrant colonial buildings in town, wildflowers, the Pinju Mountains, waterfalls, and the star attraction, Lake Tasersuaq, one of the best lakes in Europe . Besides being a well-loved hiking destination, the lake also happens to provide most of the water for the town of Qaqortoq. You might even spot some fresh blueberries, ripe for picking along the way.

For another popular walking path, hop aboard a water taxi from Qaqortoq bound for Igaliku, a small sheep farming community dating back to the 1700s. The quaint village still has ruins from the Norse era and an exhibition detailing its history can be visited in the church.

The whole area is a treasure trove of hiking trails of all different lengths such as the Lake and Plateau trail and Blue Ice Camp trail, located at the mouth of the Qooroq Ice Fjord.

Kayaking is another traditional way to explore the stunning fjords surrounding Qaqortoq. Paddle through the extensive fjord network on a guided or self-guided tour; incredible views and wildlife such as seals, whales, and birds await around every corner.

For a pure Greenlandic experience and connection to the rich waters of the southern region, try your hand at fishing for Arctic char, salmon, trout, and cod. Known for fly fishing in the summer months, the Ilua River and Narsaq are prime destinations for casting a line in the pristine water.

If you don’t get a chance to go fishing, you can still experience the catch of the day by purchasing from local fishermen in Qaqortoq’s town center each day.

Things To Do & Attractions in Qaqortoq

Relax in a hot spring.

One of the best things to do in Greenland is to soak in the soothing and relaxing waters of the nearby natural hot spring pools.

A two-and-a-half-hour boat ride or short flight from town to the uninhabited island of Uunartoq (meaning “warm place”) will land you in this Greenlandic outdoor spa paradise. The island was discovered by Norse Vikings and legend has it that they chose not to settle there as it was thought that the warm land was haunted.

Laze in the stone pools, heated from geothermal friction in the earth’s layers. The inviting water is usually at a comfortable 100 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect for a leisurely soak. If you’re lucky, you might spot whales in the distance as you unwind in one of the best hot springs in the world amid striking mountains, icebergs, and fjords.

Walk Around Town

The hills immediately surrounding Qaqortoq provide beautiful overlooks of the town and fjords from above, without too much effort. This is a great option for those who are interested in taking photos and stretching their legs without committing to a longer hike.

Walk along “Vatican Hill,” named after a local resident nicknamed “the Pope.” You’ll find the “bench of love” and the famous half-car sticking out of a building, both of which make for some great photographs.

While wandering the colorful port village, make sure to browse local shops for souvenirs. One of the most popular and authentic stores is the Great Greenland Furhouse.

This local tannery and manufacturer sells clothing items, crafted from reindeer, musk ox, and seal hides. Even if you aren’t in the market for one of these unique souvenirs, it’s worth perusing to get an idea of some traditional Greenlandic dress.

Stone & Man

No visit to Qaqortoq is complete without admiring the unique art display in town. The initiative was organized by one of the most well-known Greenlandic artists, Aka Høegh, who was born in Qaqortoq. She gathered other Nordic artists to create almost 40 works of art throughout the village, which is essentially an open-air art museum.

The project is named “Stone & Man”, and each sculpture piece is crafted using stone. This permanent exhibition of stone sculptures and carvings is one of the most celebrated and unique features of Qaqortoq.

Embark on a scavenger hunt of sorts to seek out each piece of art, which are, quite literally, carved into town.

Deep Dive into Greenlandic Culture

If you visit only one museum, it should be the Qaqortoq Museum, right in the heart of town. Housed in the old blacksmith’s shop, the yellow stone building, constructed in the early 1800s, sits in the main square, next to the famous 100-year-old fountain. It also happens to be the oldest building in Qaqortoq.

Step back in time to learn about Qaqortoq’s rich history and culture through a series of exhibitions showcasing art, clothing, and other Nordic artifacts from the Norse, Thule, and Dorese cultures. Marvel at the traditional tupilaks, carved figurines said to have protective powers against enemies and evil spirits.

Tour the “Red Room” and “Blue Room,” where polar explorer Knud Rasmussen and American aviator Charles Lindbergh stayed. If you venture outside, you can also wander into the ancient turf hut, for a glimpse into lodging in Greenland’s early days. Take note of the women’s boat outside as well, typically used to transport family and belongings while the men’s kayaks were for hunting and fishing.

Food & Drink

While exploring Qaqortoq, experiencing the local food scene will provide an excellent portal into Greenlandic culture as well. Greenlanders rely heavily on the sea and are known to use all parts of their catch.

Whales, seals, and fish all provide nourishment well past the first meal, with meat and blubber dried and preserved for the winter months, and other parts like bones, innards, and oil used in other aspects of life. For instance, bones help to create tools, and skins are used for clothing items and tents.

Adventurous eaters will find themselves in their element when tasting the flavors of Greenland. Whale meat is considered a delicacy here. Most often it’s prepared as steaks, or “Mattak”, which is whale skin with blubber, and referred to as “Greenlandic chewing gum.” Sample Suaasat, a thick broth with seal meat, barley, and onions; it’s the national dish.

Reindeer meat

Reindeer is another popular culinary item and very versatile in the kitchen. The meat can be cooked as steak, stew, soup, sausage, and much more.

Other traditional, main fare in Greenland includes musk ox, trout, and lamb. For a cozy café experience, consider stopping in Cafe Heidi-mut or Cafe Nanoq. If you need a break from Greenlandic cuisine , there’s an excellent Thai restaurant right in town called Inbox Cafe – A Little Thai Corner.

Upernaviarsuk

In addition to sampling traditional Greenlandic cuisine, the fish and meat market in town offers the chance to purchase some local foods as souvenirs.

To hear more about farming in sub-arctic conditions, stop by Upernaviarsuk, an agricultural hub and research station just outside of town. Here, you can see their gardens filled with potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and more, and learn about the strong farming ties since the ancient days in Qaqortoq.

Best Time to Visit Qaqortoq

Summer is undoubtedly the best time to visit, when local hot springs and hiking trails riddled with wildflowers are easily accessible, the tundra defrosted enough to explore in depth. It’s also the optimal time to view whales in the picturesque fjords.

The summer months also allow for the most time for outdoor exploration under the midnight sun. With the sun barely setting at all, daylight provides extra hours to enjoy Qaqortoq’s natural playground. It’s best to pack in layers, as the weather can notoriously change on a dime and the temperature varies with the highs usually only reaching the mid-50s.

You’ll find yourself peeling off layers during the midday hours, when it is usually the warmest, but bundling back up for the morning and evening. Bring items that are both warm, breathable, and waterproof, as well as windproof if possible, as rain is likely at some point during your trip. Hiking or good walking shoes are ideal as well.

Awesome Ice Cap Tour

We booked the Ice Cap Tour way in advance of our cruise ship arriving in the port of Qaqortoq and are so happy we did. We were on one of the first tenders from the cruise ship and there were Sagalands Tour Representatives with the name of their tours waiting at the dock to advise their clients where to go for their tour. While the day was a bit chilly and overcast, we still had a great tour. We boarded the Gardur and were thankful that we and the other couple (only 4 of us were on the early tour) were in a warm cozy cabin with our wonderful tour guide Naja and the boat captain. We were able to pop in and out of the cabin to take pictures while the boat was underway. We saw many icebergs along the waterway to the ice cap. At one point our boat captain offered to get up close to a large iceberg so that we could get pictures of us touching it. Once we arrived at our destination, we were helped off the boat and we walked up to the glacier ice cap. Getting up the rocks to the glacier ice cap wasn't too hard, but boots/shoes with a good grip are a must. A small cup of whiskey was offered with ice chiseled from the ice cap while we gazed upon the scenery. Our guide and captain were both friendly and informative making our tour alot of fun. We highly recommend Greenland Sagalands Ice Cap Tours!

I contacted this company before my trip however couldn’t get a tour organised. Saw the tourist info and found 2 tours I was interested in. The one I chose was to the Viking Church which takes 30 minutes in an open speed boat. They provide good overalls that cut the win and make the trip comfortable. The water was smooth and the tour guide was great. Boat captain handled the boat well and I felt safe the whole time. We arrived at the small wharf and walked say 5 minutes to the church. Good information provided. The scale of the scene is truly amazing. So much space with the mountain rising behind you. On the way back we slowed to see a humpback whale and also a iceberg. Much appreciated. Good value, well run and the tour guide was helpful.

We had no issues whatsoever in the arranging and confirming of this tour. I’m not sure why many had no problems, while others did. My correspondence was with Naja ([email protected]) who always responded promptly and was always accommodating and pleasant. We paid in advance, received our confirmation, and were met 30 feet from the tender pier. You must BOOK EARLY! This is the only tour option in Qaqortoq and is the perfect experience! As far as I am aware, they only have two boats - one for 7 persons and one for 10 - and once these are booked, that’s it - only 17 people total from an entire cruise ship get to enjoy this day! The tour is four hours and takes you through a water field of icebergs enroute to a huge glacier, and then back the same way to town. Ellen, our guide, was an extremely friendly Inuit girl, and our captain, Anguteeraq, was equally as happy and friendly! Be sure to get on one of the earliest tenders with your entire group; our tour started at 9am. We had perfect weather, but that can change in an instant according to Ellen. My guess is if the weather isn’t good, this tour wouldn’t take place .... just a guess. Don’t miss your opportunity to enjoy such a GREAT experience while in Greenland!

Don’t let anyone tell you differently, this company is first rate. True the emails take a few days to get back and forth but who cares? Contact Pitsi Høegh at [email protected]. She and her family own and run Sagalands out of Qaqotoq and it’s no small operation. As soon as your tender lands you see their red building and a guide will be standing just outside with your tour number. Catch the earliest tender. Then you board the Gardur captained by Pitsi’s brother and your licensed guide will accompany you through the beautiful lake and fiord, which on our day was filled with ice huge and tiny, and no one but us, up to the ice cap. There is a dock and lots of steep, uneven footing, we made the trail up as we went, so sturdy shoes with good grips are best. If you use hiking sticks bring those. If you aren’t an able hiker with good balance, just stay with the boat and go with the captain to chip polar ice for the whiskey. Kids and teens do great. Keep an eye out for amazing small flora in rocks and tidal pools, and take lots of pictures. You will get right up to the polar glacier but best not to go in overhangs except for fast pictures as two slumped while we were there on a sunny day. We took our own Lagavulin and had a toast there with our awesome boat mates, and again with the Captain on the boat, although he does not drink as piloting through ice takes skill and concentration, both of which he has in aces. Loved the Gardur, you sit inside but can go out back for great pictures. Another RIB boat run by Sagalands came by to get the whisky, they looked really cold even in their exposure suits. Incredible, amazing beyond words, don’t miss this, be patient and work through to the voucher. Note do call your credit card company and let them know the charge will be coming through from Sagalands in Greenland and how much exactly it will be. This makes the transaction much quicker and smoother. Thanks Pitsi, Ellen (our awesome guide) and Anguteeraq (Gardur Capt and Pitsi’s brother). It was one of the best days of our lives.

We were a group of 6 people and had arranged the Ice Cap Tour with Greenland Sagalands for the day we were in port. Despite a written email confirming our tour, when we got off the ship there was no one to meet us on the dock (as promised). The people we spoke with at Greenland Sagalands were curt, un-interested, said there was no boat, and that we had cancelled our tour (which we had not). There wasn't even an apology. We were terribly disappointed of course, but more than that, shocked at their attitude and lack of customer service. I would NOT recommend doing business with these people (though there is not any other game in town either. Maybe that is why they don't care)

We had booked an icecap tour several months ago and it was recently confirmed via email. However, when our ship docked and we arrived at the Greenlands desk, we were unapologeticly told that the tour was canceled. Had we known, we could have booked other tours, but it was too late. It was a Sunday morning and nothing was open in town except for the supermarket.

Day trips with Blue Ice

Our day trips can all be booked at Blue Ice Café in Narsarsuaq during the summer. At the café we have a notice board with all our planned trips for the following week. However, it is a good idea to  contact us in advance by email with your requests and bookings. You can read about the different tours below.

Day trips from Narsarsuaq

Boat trip to the qooroq ice fjord.

We sail from Narsarsuaq to the underwater moraine at the mouth of the Qooroq Ice Fjord. Many icebergs run aground here, forcing us to weave our way among these colossal pieces of ice until we reach the fjord, where we are rewarded with a breathtaking view of thousands of icebergs, sheer cliff faces and an enormous glacier. The glacier calves about 200,000 tons of ice at day into the fjord. Many of these icebergs have a rich turquoise colour. In the fjord, we have time to enjoy the panorama, turn off the engine and drift quietly with the current. The absolute silence is only interrupted by the sound of the distant icebergs as they break free from the glacier front and come crashing down into the fjord. On the trip, we gather ice for our cocktails and listen to the popping sounds as countless, tiny thousand-year-old compressed air bubbles escape from the ice cubes in our glasses.

Qassiarsuk (Brattahlid)

The village of Qassiarsuk is situated across the fjord, 15 minutes by boat from Narsarsuaq. Today, sheep farmers cultivate exactly the same land that the Viking Eric the Red chose for his settlement more than 1,000 years ago. Take a stroll through the village, which beautifully combines ancient history and modern living, and visit the Brattahlid open-air museum, which consists of the replicas of Tjodhilde’s Church and a Norse longhouse (admission fee is not included).

You can also hike on your own from Qassiarsuk along the gravel road towards Sermilik Fjord. Halfway there, weather permitting, you will enjoy an amazing view of both fjords; Sermilik is usually filled with ice floes and the scenic landscape is dotted with small, blue lakes. If you follow the road all the way, it ends up at the Tasiusaq sheep farm (16 km return).

Igaliku (Gardar)

The trip goes through Erik’s Fjord to Itilleq – the harbour that serves the settlement of Igaliku. You now have a short walk (4 km) on the King’s Road (named after the Danish King’s visit in 1952) to the small historic settlement of Igaliku, which is one of the most beautiful villages in Greenland. From the highest point on the road, you overlook the colourful houses, the green hills and the milky-blue fjord. On the other side of the fjord towers Illerfissalik Mountain with its snow-covered peak piercing the clear blue sky. Igaliku was the Episcopal seat during the Norse period and the ruins from that time are very impressive. Today the town thrives from sheep farming. There is a school, a church and a shop.

You can enjoy lunch made with local products at the café in the Country Hotel. The return journey is by boat to Narsarsuaq in the late afternoon/evening.

Hike to Narsarsuaq Glacier

A short drive takes us up to Hospital Valley, from where we walk through the picturesque Flower Valley and up to Narsarsuaq Glacier. The first kilometres of the hike are quite easy. We pass small streams and may even catch a glimpse of sea eagles hovering overhead. To get a view of the gigantic mass of ice, we have to climb about 300 m to a plateau. The ascent is not dangerous but you may find it a bit strenuous. We have lunch at the plateau with a magnificent view of the glacier. After the lunch, you can continue all the way down to the edge of the glacier. As we get closer, we discover that what appeared from a distance to be an uneven surface is in reality an entire landscape of ice, with high ridges and deep crevasses. You may be surprised to find small, colourful flowers growing close to the edge of the ice.

Duration : 1 day Requirements of participants : Good physical condition is necessary on this trip. It includes more demanding walking, occasionally over difficult terrain, with some steep climbs and descents. Bring good hiking boots. Group size : 4 – 12 participants Price includes : Transport to the Hospital Valley (return). Lunch packet and guide Price per person : EUR 69 / DKK 500

Blue Ice Camp

Blue Ice Camp is an idyllic place to stay one or two nights. You can put up your tent on Narsarsuk – “the tiny plateau” – and admire the silently drifting icebergs in the Qooroq Ice Fjord right before your eyes. During the day at low tide, you can walk among the stranded icebergs on the beach, look for “moonstones” (labradorite) on the plateau, take a day hike to the village of Igaliku or climb to the summit of Illerfissalik (1,752 m). Blue Ice Camp is the perfect spot to experience the quiet grandeur of this awe-inspiring landscape.

You can rent kitchen facilities such as a stove, pots, pans, plates etc. at our office in Narsarsuaq if needed.

Igaliku plateau. guidet day hike..

Discover the even quieter and more wild nature in the area outside of Igaliku. This day hike is organized as a loop starting and finishing in Igaliku Village. The main goal of our hike is to reach the scenic plateau beneath the highest peak in the region, Illerfissalik 1.752 m. From the plateau we will have the most impressive view towards the glacier front in the end of the Ice fiord. During our journey we’ll also explore the spectacular and vast landscape of the peninsula. We will hike along the rushing river and see how the landscape changes from bushes and small trees to a bare moon landscape.  This trip is for experienced hikers as we will walk for many hours in difficult terrain.

Boat trip to the ice cap (twin glacier).

We cross the wide Ikerssuaq Fjord and make our way among drifting icebergs to reach what the locals call the Twin Glacier. This is an amazing spot where you can go ashore and literally touch the ice cap! It is also one of the places where you can actually see on recently exposed rocks that the glaciers have receded over the past few decades! In the 1980’s the Twin Glacier was still calving copious amounts of ice into the fjord. Today, the ice breaks off on land! However, it is a beautiful place and you feel particularly small standing next to this giant mass of ice!

Iceberg safari

Narsaq is the perfect setting for iceberg safaris. Two extremely active glaciers in Sermilik Fjord send countless icebergs on a journey toward the sea, and many of them pass by Narsaq. The trip is a photo opp where you get every opportunity to get up close and personal with the icebergs: see, hear, feel and taste them!

Hvalsey church.

Hvalsey Church ruin is located in the inner part of Hvalsey Fjord, on a lush green meadow, only 30 minutes by boat from Qaqortoq. According to the sagas, it was Eric the Red’s cousin Thorkell Farserk who took possession of the land at Hvalsey. Thorkell was one of the men who came with Eric to Greenland in the year 985 and he probably died as a heathen himself. However, Christianity arrived in Greenland around the year 1000 and soon thereafter the Norse started to build churches at many locations throughout South Greenland. The present church ruin at Hvalsey dates from a later period and is thought to have been built during the 14th century. It is one of the most well-preserved medieval ruins in South Greenland, with thick walls up to 6 m high.

On the tour, you will have plenty of time to walk around the historic site and explore the ruins and the peaceful countryside before returning to the bustling town Qaqortoq.

Paamiut, greenland walking tour and highlights.

Cruising to southern Greenland is a nice way to explore the coastal villages in summer.   As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I enjoyed my walking tour in Paamiut and love sharing my experiences.   So, read on to discover Paamiut Greenland highlights and top things to do in this unique destination. 

About Paamiut, Greenland

Paamiut is located on the southwestern coast of Greenland on the Labrador Sea.  Nestled in the Kuannersoog estuary of the Kvanefjorden, Paamiut is surrounded by natural beauty.  It’s formerly known as Frederikshap, named after King Frederik VI.    The population is about 1,300 and the Gulf Stream keeps the town ice free year round. 

Since 1500 BC the native Kalaallisut people resided here.  Later, the Norse settlers moved to Paamiut.  It gained prosperity on the abundance of fur and whale products.  Paamiut is home to Greenland’s largest white-tail eagle population.   It’s also known for their soapstone artists.  Soapstone is a softer stone with more talc making it easier for sculpting.  Café Tamu is the only restaurant there and it is to the right of the Salvation Church. 

Mosquitoes:   This pristine port has lots of swarming mosquitoes, warranting face nets and repellant.   The local natural remedy is the leaves from Labrador tea (qajaasat). Simply, rub the leaves in hand and spread the juice on skin.  Also, a local at the museum explained there are more mosquitoes in Paamiut than other Greenland ports because Paamiut doesn’t have sheep.  In comparison, Greenland’s Qaqortoq and Nanortalik have more sheep and much less mosquitoes.  Evidently, mosquitoes can’t hatch in the water holes around sheep.

Tender Ride to the Port

The tender ride is beautiful.  We rode by a large blue iceberg.  Also, you can’t miss the abandoned, rusty Greenland Star ship as you cruise by.

Paamiut Greenland Highlights and Walking Tour

Once you arrive by tender, walk right for five minutes to the town center.  Here, you see the constellation of brightly colored buildings throughout town.  On the right is the Tourist Information Center painted in red.  Here, they answer questions and hand out maps.  To the left is the Paamiut Museum and Salvation Church. 

Seeing the Paamiut Museum is a great way to start a walking tour.  At the yellow, main building tickets cost $3 for touring restored old buildings with exhibits.  The Colonial Administrator lived in the main building.  It offers art exhibits of local paintings, soapstone sculptures, postcards and a restroom.   The Supply Storage building was also once a post office and prison.  It houses exhibits of traditional boats and kayaks with information on white-tailed eagles.  In the red Barrel-maker’s shop a man with an accordion played and locals sold their jewelry.  Outside is a covered bell historically used for rounding up hired hands. 

Next to the museum is the picturesque Fredens Kirke or Salvation Church .   

This is one of the best churches in Greenland.  It’s a Norwegian-styled wood or Stave church painted in red with yellow trim.   You can go inside free of charge.  Across the street from the church and museum is a large park with a display of a Turf house .  It’s an example of a winter accommodation in the 1940’s.  Next to it is an old green and white boat.  Going left of the church, a red bridge goes over a creek emptying into the harbor.  Here is a park with a gazebo and benches.   In the park center is a sculpture of 2 crossing whale flukes and a whale bone arch at the top of stairs. 

Best view in Paamiut is undoubtedly at Lookout Tower . 

Walking past the visitors center up the hill is the viewpoint.  Just take the stairs up through the local’s homes to the lookout.  It gets a little steep and requires a bit of a scramble.  Those with mobility issues may not be able to do it.   At the base of the tower is the best place for a picture above the town of colorful buildings. 

Ladder-like steps take you to the tower with a low overhang opening onto platform.  Be cautious not to bump your head getting up there.  The woman after me bumped her head hard.  Once you get on the platform, the 360-degree view is stunning.  I could see out into the harbor my cruise ship.  And the panorama of the city is stunning with all the colorful buildings. 

Other Stops Along the Way

I walked past the church away from the water to the Paamiut Cemetery.  It’s picturesque with the white crosses over raised graves and colorful wildflowers.  Also, I made a stop at the local grocery store, Brugseni .  Being a Dutch Realm, it offers a bakery with pastries and a nice selection of food items.

The tour will consist of a self guided walking tour , which you can do before and / or after boat trip and Hvasley Island, a  one hour return trip Boat tour to Hvasley , and 1 to 1.5 hour Hvalsey Island tour .

The walking tour will be at your own pace. Each person will receive an 8 ½ x 11  town map, to be kept as a souvenir . The map will clearly mark places in Qaqortoq  so that you can visit all local points of interest.   Descriptions of several will be provided on the back of the map. (Maps will be picked up from my room on the ship prior to arrival in Qaqortoq)

The walking tour can be completed prior to or after the boat and Hvasley tour. You can complete the walking part of this tour in parts if you want, some before boat, some after boat, some later, it is not all people in a group at once, rather your own time as you wish.

One of the 32 points of interest in Qaqortoq is Stone and Man.   All throughout the town, carved into boulders and lichen-covered rock faces, are carvings of whales, faces, and other traditional designs. Together these stoneworks are a citywide work of art known as Stone & Man.  There are 24 in all, and we will venture to find all 24. (More details on the back of your map!)

The boat ride will depart from Qaqortoq Harbour going to Hvasley, an amazing tour for those who want to experience the landscapes of Greenland, and the interesting history of the Norse Vikings.

We will board high performance ice-classified targa boats, outfitted with lifejackets and safety rafts for all.  Boats are covered and have washroom facilities.

We begin a half hour journey to Hvasley , sailing past the large island of Arpatsivik , the Norse “Hvalsey” or Whale Island, and into the fjord with the ancient Norse name “Hvalseyfjördur . On our way to Hvalsey by boat, it is possible to see an abundance of whales and seabirds frolicking in the fjord. Greenland prides itself on having only free and wild animals in its waters, so Greenland’s whales are free to swim wherever the schools of fish lead them. 

 We will be exploring the area where the Vikings, led by Eric The Red,   settled when coming to Greenland in the year 985 .

We also explore the history and story about the Vikings . The story about what Norse life was like here during their 500 years in the Middle Ages. Why did the Norse disappear? What was the last written evidence of these fascinating people?

Long before Columbus ever had the idea of sailing west to try to find a shorter route to India,  the Norse settlers from Scandinavia had established themselves in Greenland.

 A guide will tell the history of the Norse people, and there will be time to walk around and enjoy the place.  “Hvalsey” is a well-preserved ruins of one of the first Christian churches on the North American continent.

A 600-700 year old church ruin , standing in a quiet and peaceful setting. Sheep graze close by,  and birds fly overhead, other than this, the silence is almost deafening. Today nothing is left of the churchyard that surrounded the church, although the stone wall that enclosed the churchyard can still be made out in the terrain. When you walk into the very well preserved church ruins, you can clearly feel the presence of history. ”. It’s almost as if the Norse settlers had only just left the building.

Of course, the wooden roof and the interior are no longer present, but otherwise the church  appears very much as it did when it was abandoned in the 15th century, with stone walls  towering up to a height of 5-6 metres. (16.5 –19.5ft)

After approx. one hour on the island, we will enjoy another half hour boat tour through the Hvalseyfjordur fjord and back to Qatortoq Harbour. 

Those who have not completed the walking tour will have plenty of time to do so at their own leisure.

IMPORTANT We will be following a schedule re boats to and from Hvalsey. Each passenger with members of their group will be given a boat number, and boat departure time.  You will also be given a time to depart Hvalsey.

It is important you arrive 10 mins prior to your time . Boats will be going back and forth from the Harbour to Hvalsey all day so that we can accommodate everyone. You MUST have your ticket to board the boat, (which will be emailed to you prior to sailing) as we have secured all available boats for the day, and there will be room only for those on the tour. Sticking to a schedule for the boat portion is very important. 

ACCESSIBILITY : The boat to Hvasley is not recommended - boats are small and Hvalsey Island has rough terrain.

*** This tour is non refundable, and does not provide back to ship guarantee due to its remote location.  The ship however uses the same dock for tenders as we do for the tour, so we are very close.  Insurance documentation can be provided as required ***

Outdoors | explore the history of downtown norfolk, art of the neon district with free walking tours.

The Downtown Norfolk Council has partnered with Norfolk Tour Company to offer 21 free monthly walking tours of the downtown and the Neon District.

The Saturday tours run through December and include notable public art in the Neon District, the importance of the Granby Street corridor, a history of downtown theaters, an urban design-themed tour focusing on downtown’s redevelopment, the Elizabeth River Trail, as well as tours of historic homes and churches.

The Neon District tours explore more than 100 pieces of public art and many local businesses that make up the neighborhood fabric.

All tours begin at The Plot at the corner of Granby Street and Olney Road. Neon District public parking is available on the street, at the Plot’s parking lot and the Harrison Opera House lot.
