What our guests say about Candis

April 26, 2024
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!

Tailor Made Safaris

Popular safaris, east & central africa, southern africa, set departures, top destinations, indian ocean islands, plains camp at rhino walking safaris, “experience every layer of the bush on foot, by game viewer and star lit sleep out”.

south africa kruger plains camp at rhino walking safaris6

Why we like it

  • Walking safaris
  • Private sleep-outs under the stars
  • Game-rich concession
  • Activities for all interests

The private concession borders Mala Mala and Sabi Sands Private Game Reserves and allows unrestricted passage for a variety of animals and wildlife to wander through, creating moments of wonder for all guests.

south africa kruger plains camp at rhino walking safaris1

With 12,000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness to explore (not previously accessible to the public – and currently only accessible to guests of Rhino Walking Safaris), there is very little to disturb guests while on a walk. The guides may choose to walk from the camp or to drive out and walk from the vehicle – all without seeing any of the public visitors to the park.

Experience & Activities

Plains Camp is a well-appointed camp with large en-suite tents, comfortable extra-length beds and quality linens. An honesty bar (with soft drinks, beers, ciders and house wines included in the rate) and a plunge pool in which to cool off on a hot day just adds to the ease of camp living. The chef prepares a hearty brunch, tasty high tea and a three-course dinner from fresh ingredients. Served at a table set with white linen, candles and silverware, this is the best way to end an exciting day in the bush.

There are different ‘layers’ to experiencing the bush. The first and most commonly done is to go out on game drives looking for bigger animals and changing landscapes.

The second, for serious bush-lovers and connoisseurs – or those looking for a closer-to-nature experience – is that of seeing everything from the ground. Walking, taking in the sights, sounds and scents of nature – even tasting wild fruits, and learning about the little things sometimes missed while on a drive, not to mention experiencing the thrill of seeing the big game on foot. With a four-hour morning walk and a shorter late afternoon walk combined with a brief game drive, there is plenty of opportunities to get the most out of this experience.

Walking safaris typically depart in the morning. The guide will adjust the walking speed to accommodate the ‘slowest’ person in the group. However, to be fair to others, a fair amount of fitness is required to participate in the walking safari.

Children of all ages are welcome at camp, however, to participate in game drives, a private vehicle must be booked by the group to accommodate children under the age of 6. For sleepouts, the minimum age is 8; for walking safaris, the minimum age is 12.

Accommodations

  • Suites: Plains Camp has four comfortably furnished African explorer tents, each accommodating two persons in twin beds. The screened en-suite bathroom has a toilet, brass shower and basin with hot running water. Each suite has its own private deck with Adirondack chairs overlooking the Timbetene plain, where guests can relax and enjoy the African wilderness on your doorstep.
  • For the adventurous, there is also the option of booking a private sleep-out, where you can sleep out under the stars on raised wooden platforms and enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue) cooked on open flames.

TRAVEL WITH US TO PLAINS CAMP IN THE KRUGER PARK

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an intimate trails camp in the heart of South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park.

Take a walk on the wild side. You will be privileged to exclusively explore a 12 000 hectare private Mutlumuvi concession in the southern Kruger National Park on foot in ‘Big 5 territory’ that was not previously open to the public. Experience Africa’s wildlife – its sights, sounds, scents and textures on foot or spend a night under the stars at our Sleep-Out decks and immerse yourself in nature.

Are you ready to take a walk on the wild side? Put Plains Camp on your list of places to visit while exploring the Kruger National Park – you won’t be disappointed! Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is not your ordinary Kruger Park camp. The exclusive lodge offers two of the most unforgettable and adventuresome activities – walking safaris through the park and the option to sleep-out in tents on wooden decks. Either way, you are guaranteed an experience of a lifetime .

While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. Expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike.

The camp itself is carefully positioned overlooking the Timbetene plain and active waterholes, ensuring that wildlife and animal interactions are visible from the swimming pool, lounge and dining area, not only while out on a walk.

The Kruger National Park

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 (7,523 sq mi) in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km (220 mi) from north to south and 65 km (40 mi) from east to west. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926.

There are nine Private Concessions inside the Kruger National Park. They are exclusive-use, unfenced private concessions that are built in the best Big 5 game viewing regions inside the Park. The accommodation is exclusive luxury, and limited to a few rooms per safari lodge, offering some of the finest accommodation in Southern Africa. Guest’s experience crowd-free game viewing, in specially customized game viewing vehicles, and may also access the rest of the park should their ranger want to pursue a special sighting.

Making a difference

Responsible and ethical eco-tourism is at our core, and animals and plant life are treated with the utmost respect. Encounter animals in their natural habitat on their terms, knowing that your pleasure is not only not harmful to nature – with no off-road driving, harassment of animals or captivity; but that a percentage of your spend goes directly toward conservation.

Plains Camp is not only distinctive in its design – with only four East African Safari-style tents, but also in the way things are done. The manner of trail is similar to those of SANParks in that it is a proper trail with walks of up to four hours allowing one to submerse ones senses in a hands on experience, not just a mid-morning stroll after breakfast. What sets it apart is the combination of the wealth of knowledge and experience of our highly qualified trail’s guides and unique elegance of the furnishings and treasured antiques, quality of food and service and presence of a cool plunge pool in which to enjoy a cocktail overlooking the plain between walks.

Walking safaris at Plains Camp are also the perfect opportunity to focus on smaller creatures such as bird, reptile and insects. The average morning walk takes 3-5 hours (totaling 5-12 km)

Afternoon Leisure

Return to Plains Camp for a midday siesta and relax with a book from the library and watch to see what animals come for a drink at the waterhole – perhaps, Giraffe, Zebra or Buffalo. Take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool and relax before continuing your adventures.

Game Drives

rhino walking safari plains camp

In the late afternoon you will head out on a game drive in search for wild game. There will be time for sundowners, before returning to camp for a sumptuous safari inspired dinner. • For those walking enthusiasts out there – undoubtedly, this is an experience that should not be missed!  Nothing beats the thrill of walking in the wild as you never know what is around the next bush!  (We had incredible encounters on foot, mere 100 meters away from us!)   A great experience to get closer to nature and experience Kruger on a different level!
  • This intimate trails camp is situated in the heart of the game-rich area of the Kruger (which shares an unfenced boundary with renowned Mala Mala and Sabi Sands reserves!) Comprising 4 Tents, no wifi & no cell phone signal – this gives you the opportunity to really immerse yourself in nature! (What can be better from escaping everyday life?)
  • Plains Camp offers a scenic view of the active watering hole and vast Timbertene Plains!  We found the plunge pool is the best spot where you can unwind and observe wildlife as they come to drink!
  • We love sleeping under the stars and here we got to experience a unique opportunity with the “Sleep Out platforms”, providing an unforgettable evening immersed in the African Skies!  (In fact, these elevated wooden platforms, situated 4 meters above the ground, are exclusive to the Kruger region).
  • An excellent suggestion is to merge luxury accommodations and game drives at Rhino Post and Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris, with the immersive and intimate on-foot experience.
  • Flying into Skukuza Airport grants convenient proximity, as Rhino Post Lodge (the base camp) is merely a 30-minute game drive away, ensuring effortless accessibility.

Lodge Information

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an intimate trails camp in the heart of South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park. Located on the Mutlumuvi concession in the Kruger National Park, half an hour’s safari game drive from Skukuza Airport. The concession consists of 12 000 hectares of wilderness area just inside the un-fenced western boundary that separates the Kruger from the Mala Mala and Sabi Sand Game reserves. Guests are privileged to exclusively the private concession on foot in ‘Big 5 territory’ that was not previously open to the public. Experience Africa’s wildlife – its sights, sounds, scents and textures on foot or spend a night under the stars at their Sleep-Out decks and immerse yourself in nature.

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is not your ordinary Kruger Park camp. Their exclusive lodge offers two of the most unforgettable and adventurous activities – walking safaris through the park and the option to sleep-out in tents on wooden decks. Either way, you are guaranteed an experience of a lifetime.

While approximately 2 million travellers per year visit the Kruger National Park, very few have the opportunity of experiencing wilderness areas that are not open to the general public let alone have the privilege of doing so on foot. Their expert guides take massive pleasure in sharing this extraordinary honour with nature lovers and adventurers alike.

The main buildings consist of a spacious wooden deck and firepit with a stylish but straightforward dining tent with white linen and silverware and a lounge furnished with super comfortable leather couches, deep chairs and an honesty bar from which to help yourself. Between walks which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, take pleasure in the solitude of a hidden camp. The camp is built from canvas and wood with beautiful antiques and silverware giving it the elegance of a bygone era. Overlooking the Timbetene Plain where plains game roams freely, and elephants are seen daily. This positioning allows guests to enjoy unhindered views of animals grazing and interacting without being noticed.

The bar is stocked with water, soft drinks, beers, spirits and liqueurs. Water, soft drinks, beers and house wines are included in the rate and Cellar wines may be ordered from their sister lodge, Rhino Post Safari Lodge. Enjoy sitting in the shade, sipping on a gin and tonic and watching elephants slake their thirst at the reservoir and trough where water is pumped daily.

On a hot day, take a dip in the plunge pool and relax on a lounger enjoying a cold beer or iced cold drink all the while keeping an eye out for passing wildlife. On a Winter evening, bundle up warmly and toast your toes around the fire, sip on a hot chocolate or coffee with a kick and listen for the echo of hyenas whooping, or lions roaring in the distance.

Suites Four stylishly appointed en-suite explorer-style tents are perfectly nestled in the shade of a Knobthorn cluster each accommodating two persons in twin beds.

Far removed from civilisation, Plains Camp is well positioned for exclusivity and adventure. After experiencing unfettered wildlife in ‘Big 5 territory’ guests get to come back to a comfortable inviting beds made of white percale linen and soft bamboo throws making bedtime dreamy.

The screened en-suite bathroom has a toilet, brass shower and basin with hot running water. Each suite has its own private deck with Adirondack chairs overlooking the Timbetene plain where you can relax and enjoy the African wilderness on your doorstep.

Dining High tea is served in the late afternoon, followed by a short walk, sundowners in the bush and a game drive, returning after dark with spotlights with the opportunity to view nocturnal animals on the prowl. Share drinks and stories around the fire before a delicious dinner with a South African twist. Enjoy meals and fireside chats with your guide who is hospitable, well-educated and extremely experienced, and takes great pleasure in sharing this special place with you. Safari Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an activity-based destination. They specialise in wilderness walking safaris led by dedicated guides with years of experience and training. With a maximum of eight people – over the age of 12 – per walk, guests are accompanied by two armed guides as you explore all the wonder and intrigue the Kruger has to offer.

Plains Camp is not about a variety of activities; it is about the incredibly liberating experience of immersing oneself in nature and the astounding biodiversity of the Kruger National Park.

Walking safaris have become a much sought-after activity – the ultimate way to experience nature first hand. For the enthusiasts, they recommend a full-length walking safari as you experience nature intimately, using all five of your senses. Marvel at the miracles of nature: from the fascinating minutiae of insect life, vibrant birds, and the fragrance of wild herbs to the adrenalin injecting exhilaration of colossal animals and sinewy predators as nature intended.

Early morning walking trails depart the camp at sunrise, either on foot, or driving out to an area hand-picked by your guide, and then walking from there. You will walk accompanied by two armed guides who have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.

Enjoy tracking animals, identifying spoor, dung and plants, learning about animal behaviour and the medicinal and traditional cultural uses of various plants and trees. Make the most of photographic opportunities, bird watching and all the while keeping an eye out for general game and predators.

Stop to study the small things, smell and taste wild herbs, and enjoy refreshments in the shade of a tree.

Until you have walked in big game territory, it is hard to conceive the actual height of a giraffe, or just how enormous, silent and gentle an elephant really is. It is also a heart-stopping privilege to round a corner and surprise sleeping lions or buffalo grazing.

Return on time for a hearty brunch, followed by a swim, nap or time spent spying on nature from the comfort of the camp.

Why Rhino Walking Safaris?

In 1978 sanparks offered visitors to the park the opportunity to walk in the kruger national park with armed guides which proved to be a massive success in ensuing years. rhino walking safaris identified the need for a similar opportunity to be offered to discerning clients wanting to be close to nature, but with more of a ‘glamping’ feel. since 2002 plains camp @ rhino walking safaris has filled this niche in the tourism market by providing specialist walking safaris in the kruger national park., explore the kruger with the experts, experienced guides with a passion for nature.

When contemplating heading out into the bush on foot, in an area rich in game, including the somewhat infamous big 5, you want to know that you are in safe hands. Guides at Rhino Walking Safaris hold the highest possible academic and practical qualification for guiding on foot and are backed up by assistant Trails Rangers with a lifetime of experience. We usually employ our assistant Trails Rangers from retiring SANParks Field Rangers, most of whom have spent almost all of their working lives patrolling the Kruger Park keeping a sharp eye out for signs of poaching, disease or unusual activity.

ALL THE COMFORTS YOU NEED

Live like an african explorer.

Most wilderness trails either involve carrying and pitching tents or staying in a reasonably basic base camp – with shared ablution facilities, simple meals and no bar facility (though you may bring your own drinks). At Plains Camp, we have established a well-appointed camp with large en-suite tents, comfortable extra-length beds and quality linens. An honesty bar (with soft drinks, beers, ciders and house wines included in the rate), and a plunge pool in which to cool off on a hot day just adds to the ease of camp living. The chef prepares a hearty brunch, tasty high tea and three-course dinner from fresh ingredients. Served at a table set with white linen, candles and silverware, this is the best way to end an exciting day in the bush.

A LITTLE PIECE OF AFRICA JUST FOR YOU

Kruger the way it was meant to be.

With 12 000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness to explore (not previously accessible to the public – and currently only accessible to guests of Rhino Walking Safaris), there is very little to disturb you while on a walk. The guides may choose to walk from the camp, or to drive out and walk from the vehicle – all without seeing any of the public visitors to the park.

MAKE IT MORE THAN JUST A SAFARI

Immerse your senses in what the kruger has to offer, get the best of both worlds, adventures all around.

New exciting experiences including the option to pre-book additional nights at Rhino Post Safari Lodge or the Sleep-Out decks. Within 10kms of Plains Camp lies Rhino Post Safari Lodge, the ideal place to start or end your walking safari – with in-room massages, a deep freestanding bathtub and an outdoor shower to ease you back into (or out of!) civilisation. Game drives in this game-rich area are usually very fruitful. Experience the best the wild has to offer and sleep out under the stars on a raised deck (our Sleep-Out decks) on a high-density foam mattress with nothing but a soft duvet and sheer shade cloth between you and the night sky.

Description

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris is an intimate trails camp in the heart of South Africa’s legendary Kruger National Park. With 12 000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness to explore (not previously accessible to the public – and currently only accessible to guests of Rhino Walking Safaris), there is very little to disturb you while on a walk.

The guides may choose to walk from the camp, or to drive out and walk from the vehicle – all without seeing any of the public visitors to the park.We are privileged to exclusively explore a 12 000 hectare private concession on foot in ‘Big 5 territory’ that was not previously open to the public. Experience Africa’s wildlife – its sights, sounds, scents and textures on foot or spend a night under the stars at our Sleep-Out decks and immerse yourself in nature.

There are different ‘layers’ to experiencing the bush. The first and most commonly done is to go out on game drives looking for bigger animals and changing landscapes. The second, for serious bush-lovers and connoisseurs – or those looking for a closer to nature experience – is that of seeing everything from the ground. Walking, taking in the sights, sounds and scents of nature – even tasting wild fruits, and learning about the little things sometimes missed while on a drive; not to mention experiencing the thrill of seeing the big game on foot. With a four-hour morning walk and shorter late afternoon walk combined with a brief game drive, there is plenty of opportunities to get the most out of this experience.

Between walks which take place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, take pleasure in the solitude of a hidden camp. The camp is built from canvas and wood with beautiful antiques and silverware giving it the elegance of a bygone era. It overlooks the Timbetene Plain where plains game roams freely, and elephants are seen daily. This positioning allows guests to enjoy unhindered views of animals grazing and interacting without being noticed.

Rhino Walking Safaris lie within a private concession in the world-renowned Kruger Park just north of Skukuza and so offers a wildlife experience second to none. To give you some idea of how prime this area is, the concession shares an unfenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sand reserve with an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two.

To be in an excellent prime Big Five game viewing area is one thing – to then tackle it on foot out of the comfort zone of a Land Rover makes it a much more intense, heart pumping experience altogether! Rhino Walking Safaris specialise in exclusive walking safaris through 12,000-hectares of pristine bushveld where you will follow animal trails on foot. The bush walks are all accompanied by two highly qualified and armed rangers who understand animal behaviour and territorial boundaries and will share their wealth of bush knowledge with you – from the animals, trees, grasses, insects and birds you might see to the medicinal uses of plants, basic tracking and survival skills.

Nothing is predictable in the bush; therefore, each walk offers a potentially new experience which will open your eyes, nose and ears, making your heart thump a hundred beats a minute. You are not guaranteed to see any game but you know they are there (probably watching you in fact!) as you see signs, perhaps a fresh leopard track, the warning bark of a secretive bushbuck, or the unmistakable scent of a passing elephant herd. But don't fear as these animals would rather carry on their daily life than worry about you - much less attack you! But you might have an opportunity to encounter many of the classical African game such as herds of impala, walk next to stately giraffe or come across a crash of rhinos (perhaps even the toothier members of the Big Five!) This truly is a way to feel much more at one with the bush and really feel alive!

Rhino Walking Safaris operates from Plains Tented Camp which only caters for a maximum of eight people, (no children under 12), so you are ensured of a quality, pristine wilderness away from the crowds! There are 4 luxury, comfortably furnished African explorer-style tents with en-suite bathrooms (hot water) and whilst simple they offer all the necessary comforts whilst avoiding unnecessary luxury - all linen is 100% cotton percale, there are gorgeous down duvets and furnishings of a very high quality, including numerous antiques and a variety of guest amenities are provided. The tents are set an acacia knob thorn thicket which overlooks the spectacular Timbitene plain and an active waterhole so you can enjoy game viewing right on your doorstep.

Built in authentic pioneer tradition, it creates the ambience of a 19th century naturalist’s retreat - take in an Africana book collection and antique treasures reminiscent of a golden bygone era. The lodge’s tents and public areas are raised on wooden decks – the tents are constructed purely from canvas and wood, with no trees having been chopped down in keeping with operating company Isibindi Africa’s ethic of “treading lightly on the land”. This camp is specifically designed for low energy consumption and makes use of a generator and a back-up battery system, which power overhead fans and 24-hour lighting (also used to re-charge camera batteries). The communal area includes a lounge and dining area with an outside fireplace for cold evenings and small plunge pool – perfect for chilling those sore muscles after a long walk!

A typical day at Plains Camp begins with a mug of steaming coffee (or tea) and traditional homemade rusks, after which you set out on your morning walk - following rhino tracks and elephant paths! Trails are structured by the rangers taking into consideration the fitness levels of the group (usually 3-4 hours in length) and avoid the heat of midday. After a delicious brunch, afternoons are spent enjoying and relaxing in the cool of the acacia trees, keeping an eye on the waterhole where a stream of animals coming to drink will keep you enthralled. After the heat of the middle of the day is passed, you will set out again in the late afternoon to explore again on foot or take a game drive. Dining is an elegant affair in keeping with the nostalgic ambiance with your table set with crisp linen and silver - food is all homecooked, fresh and delicious!

We find that the walking camp makes a great combo with its more conventionally luxurious sister camp, Rhino Post, which is centred around vehicle-based game drives. So, you could for example spend a couple of nights at Rhino Post before moving across to the Plains Camp for the walking experience – this way you get to enjoy 2 completely different experiences.

Talking of different experiences, another stunning option (at extra cost) is to spend an unforgettable night out under the stars at the concession’s Sleep-Out camp - sleeping outdoors, under the stars on elevated wooden platforms 4 metres high. You will arrive on foot and after hanging up your mosquito net and preparing your bed on the platforms which overlook a waterhole, you can relax and enjoy the sunset. As the night settles you can appreciate the sounds and other senses of the African bush, whilst sipping a refreshing sundowner, while your guide prepares a braai on an open blazing fire. Then it is time to retire to your individual platform where you may be serenaded to sleep by the whooping of a hyena or the roar of a distant (or perhaps not so distant!) lion!

An African Safari Changed My View of the World

In the Shondaland series The Novelty of Nature , we’re digging into the power of natural places and the wellness benefits of embracing the elements. From camping tips and safari stories to eye-opening tales about the environment to inspiring ways to reclaim your relationship with nature, these stories show it’s never been a better time to get lost in the great outdoors.

A rustling outside my canvas tent in a remote part of Kenya’s Ol Pejeta Conservancy jolted me out of my jet-lagged daze. Opening the zipper, I scanned the expansive bush and realized I wasn’t alone. Quietly, I walked toward the barbed wire fence along the edge of an embankment leading to the reddish-brown waters of the narrow Ewaso Ng’iro River. There, knee-deep in the muddy water, stood an adolescent African elephant, 30 or so feet in the distance, completely oblivious to me.

Flapping his giant ears to keep cool, the elephant snaked his nimble trunk around the branches to feast. I let out a gasp; my first instinct was to capture the moment on camera. But I reminded myself to be mindful of this solitude in the wilderness in the presence of such a mighty creature. I stashed my phone away and stood there transfixed, lulled by the cool woodland breeze and warmed by the equatorial sun until the animal moved on. My body relaxed, my worries dissolved, and for a short period, my mind was still enough to be at peace.

Enrapturing experiences like this make a safari thrilling and unforgettable. My introduction to African wildlife came when I was a teenager growing up in a small town in South India. My aunt, who moved to the continent after getting married, mailed photos from a vacation in South Africa. A towering giraffe stood in a grassland near the vehicle, its mahogany patches contrasting against a cloudless, baby-blue sky. The image was etched in my memory.

Ten years later, while living in California after graduating college, I got the chance to go on my own safari. A friend who was on an extended volunteer trip in a rural community along the shores of Tanzania’s Lake Victoria invited me and two other girlfriends to visit. In just a few months, I received the necessary vaccination shots and was on my way with a backpack and nearly empty bank account. The word “safari” translates to “journey” in Swahili; I didn’t realize then that the moment I stepped on African soil would forever change my life.

Two flights to Nairobi and a 12-hour overnight bumpy bus ride to Mwanza later, the four of us arrived exhausted but excited for the adventure ahead. We hired a safari guide and vehicle for a multiday girls’ trip. Our first stop was the Serengeti, the famed national park famous for the greatest spectacle on Earth — the wildebeest migration — where millions of ungulates make the grueling journey across the plains and rivers in the dry season in search of food.

We drove for hours, with the same barren plains passing us by, our hair, faces, and arms covered in dust from the open windows. The scenery changed as we approached the migration. The grayish-brown bodies of the wildebeests, with their black manes stirring, moved like an undulating wave across the endless plains.

While they trudged along, we scanned the savanna for wild cat action, as the migration was prime hunting season. Finally, we spotted a leopard, camouflaged in the tall grass and acacia trees, stalking its prey. My heart rate quickened; I remember standing on the seat and poking my head out of the pop-top roof for a better view. The scene in front of me seemed straight out of a Discovery Channel nature show, and I expected music signifying an impending kill to come on any minute. Alas, there was no dramatic soundtrack, and the leopard slinked off into the grasses with nary any action.

That night, no matter how much I prepared mentally, I wasn’t ready for camping out in the middle of the wilderness. At a campground called Simba Camp on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, the four of us pitched our tent under an imposing tree. The area is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and has the distinction of being the largest unbroken caldera in the world.

After a dinner prepared over a campfire, we piled into our small tent and slipped into our sleeping bags, with just a thin material shielding us from the dangerous bush. Throwing on all the warm clothes we brought, we huddled, fighting the chill that descended soon after the sunset. But the cold wasn’t the only thing that kept us up that night. The shrieks and squeals of hyenas right outside the tent haunted us, ensuring none of us got a wink of sleep. We learned the next morning that it isn’t uncommon for lions and elephants to venture into the camp. After all, we were in their world, cocooned in relative safety, as there was plenty of meaty prey around for predators to stay away from humans.

We headed down the slope of the Ngorongoro Crater. With encircling walls higher than the Empire State Building, the crater is blessed with dense evergreen montane forests, open moors, and grasslands. This Eden is home to the Big Five — elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, black rhinos — and other animals, all coexisting in a 102-square-mile area. With barely any other vehicles around, we took our time to stop and spot wildlife, and drove toward the seemingly alien-planet landscape of Lake Magadi, a saline soda lake that attracts hundreds of flamingos who inhabit the shallow saline soda lake. The highlight of the game drive, though, was seeing the endangered black rhino, an animal who eluded us in the Serengeti, where poaching decimated their population.

As we drove up, the setting sun cast a warm glow on the canopy, and brilliant golden rays went in different directions. Underneath, two mating elephants, with their trunks intertwined, playfully wrestled. On this hopeful and adventurous journey, a seed was planted. I became enamored with wildlife, and a desire to protect them took root. This led to a career in writing with a focus on conservation, in which I hoped to inspire others to have similar adventures and protect nature.

Covid put an abrupt end to my traveling days, confining me at home like the majority of the population. The turmoil was made worse by a traumatic event in my family. I was barely hanging onto hope; normalcy seemed like a distant memory, and getting on a plane was a scary proposition.

It was during this long, reflective time that it occurred to me that the most joyful times are when I am living in the moment in pristine wild places. Untouched areas that take me back to another era, where ancient trees like baobabs stand proud, where virgin rainforests, acacia woodlands, and savanna grasses remain havens for wild animals who roam freely as they have for thousands of years. Nowhere on the planet is this more evident than in the protected places in several African countries.

I was dismayed to learn that the pandemic deeply affected communities and halted many conservation efforts. With both tourism income and boots on the ground gone, poaching increased in certain hot spots. It was then I found a new purpose of not merely fulfilling my desire to be immersed in nature but to also do what I could to help. As soon as I was vaccinated, I boarded a flight back to Nairobi, almost 20 years after that fateful journey.

This time, I didn’t sleep on the ground or drive for endless hours. On my first stop in Kenya’s Mara Naboisho Conservancy in the Masai Mara reserve, a community-owned protected land home to abundant wildlife, I upgraded to a tent with canvas walls, a plush bed, and a bathroom with hot showers. I dined on gourmet food overlooking the savanna. I went on twice-daily game drives in an open-air vehicle, snapped photos of the sunrise, and learned about animal tracking on a walking safari. Most rewardingly, I met with the women at a local organization helping uplift women through beadwork.

I continued on to two different camps in the Serengeti, one that is run entirely by women and another in a recently opened conservation area called Namiri Plains, where efforts have resulted in an increase in the cheetah population. On each of my outings at these camps, I brought a notepad and camera in my day bag, a heart full of fresh hope, and a bubbling hankering to share my experiences with others once again.

My outings opened my eyes to the fact that a safari is more than just the Big Five or the African Great Migration. And no game drive is ever the same. One day, it was lions and their cubs feasting on a zebra as jackals and vultures waited their turns, young hyena pups playing near a den, and hundreds of gazelles and impalas grazing and jumping.

On another day, an elephant in musth blocked the way, two cheetah brothers wandered along a drying river in pursuit of their next meal, adorable vervet monkeys groomed each other along the sides of the road, and a male lion roared so close to the vehicle that I felt it in my bones. Birds including ostriches, marabou storks, kori bustards that look like descendants of dinosaurs, and stunning beauties like African fish eagles and lilac-breasted rollers filled up my memory card.

I returned to the continent a few more times to experience its diverse regions, hiking the rain-forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park to come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas and learn about conservation successes; witnessing anti-poaching guide dogs in training in Akagera National Park; and venturing on solar-powered boat rides to catch sightings of Nile crocodiles, hippos, and herds of elephants along the Chobe River in Botswana with a female guide to report on equity, sustainability, and conservation.

Back at Ol Pejeta Conservancy the day after my elephant encounter, I knew exactly who I was going to see, as I was scheduled to meet Najin and Fatu, the last two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The two females, who belong to a subspecies of the white rhinoceros, live in a large enclosure with a southern white rhino, under 24-7 armed protection against poachers. Their predecessors roamed the savanna grasslands and woodlands of East and Central Africa. The species is extinct in the wild.

Enticed with a snack, mom Najin walked toward me like an armored vehicle and stuck her horn the size of my forearm into the window. With her massive stature, compared to the four-wheeler I was sitting in, she stood mere inches from me. With my heart pounding and overflowing with joy, I handed her a carrot that quickly disappeared into her square-lipped snout. My shaky hand reached and touched the folds of her thick, rough skin, compelled to memorialize our interaction, as I may never see her species again.

Losing interest once the treats stopped coming, Najin moseyed on and brought herself down onto the ground, laying her massive head on one side as if contemplating life. While Najin doesn’t realize the fate of her species, the gravity of what I just experienced hit me hard. Once these two are gone, the world will forever lose this subspecies, never to be seen again. Our relationship with nature is mutual; it helps us heal, feel joy, and find meaning, and in return, it needs us to protect, preserve, and care for it. It gives us unforgettable moments and makes us appreciate the fragility and beauty of life.
