How to Travel by Land from Laos to Vietnam (A Backpacker’s Guide)

A Part of the Banana Pancake Trail is a Laos and Vietnam. They have 6 shared borders that you can enter if you are visa-free or have valid Visa. While you can quickly get flights from Laos to Vietnam, many backpackers also like crossing borders. Here, you’ll know how to travel by land from Laos to Vietnam.

Land Border Crossing is the cheapest and most fun way to hop from one country to another. Not only can you save half of the ticket prices, but you could see different views and experience more culture along the way.  Our guide will tell you how to get from famous spots in Laos to the ones in Vietnam.

The Land Borders

Here are the land borders on which you can cross from Laos to Vietnam. Though Filipinos can stay visa-free in Vietnam for 21 days, most nationalities need an eVisa for Vietnam. With your Visa, you can also cross the following international land borders:

• Lao Bao – Dansavanh

Vientiane to Hanoi

Learn here how you can travel from Laos’ capital to Vietnam’s.

• Ride a sleeper bus from Vientiane Southern Bus Station
• The buses leave at 5 PM
• Direct buses are operated by HTX Van Tai and The Sinh Tourist
• Travel Time is 22 – 24 hours
• Cost is about USD 30 – 40
• You will be stopping on the border (usually Cau Treo) which opens at 7 AM
• You will be arriving at Hanoi Nuoc Ngam Station

Vientiane to Vinh

Vinh is the capital of Nghệ An Province, which is found in the north-center of Vietnam. From Laos, you could make a stop here before going to other famous cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh. You can also stop by Cu Lao beach or Da Nang.

• Go to the bus station in Vientiane
• Ride a sleeper bus, usually Saysamon Transports
• The ticket costs USD 20 – 25
• The schedule is every 7 PM daily
• It will take about 10 – 12 hours

Luang Prabang to Hanoi

Luang Prabang is another famous and most favorite spot of tourists in Laos. Witness the  Buddhist culture as well as their temples in this ancient town. From here, you can journey to Hanoi.

• Go to the Malany Guest House (HTX Van Tai), Naluang Bus Terminal (Naluang), Northern Bus Terminal (The Sinh Tourist)
• Ride the sleeper bus, the ticket costs USD 45 – 60
• The Naluang Bus departs every 6 PM
• It will take about 24 – 27 hours

Attapeu to Ngoc Hoi

If you are in the southern part of Laos, then the capital there is Attapeu. You could cross from Cambodia from here and enjoy Don Det, 4000 Islands, or Pakse. It’s a less-traveled route, but you could go from here and take buses to reach to Ho Chi Minh or Hoi An.

To the Border

• Ride a bus from Attapeu, Laos to Ngoc Hoi, Vietnam
• You would be crossing the Bo Y border
• This will take about 3 hours costing USD 20 – 30

From Ngoc Hoi

• You could take buses from Ngoc Hoi to Ho Chi Minh or Hoi An

Travel Tips for your Land travel from Laos to Vietnam

• The bus station is chaotic, don’t let go of your ticket or have copies until you get on your bus
• Some buses may have not toilet; so you may stop at a few stations
• The temperature of the bus is super cold
• Bring snacks and buy enough water during your travel, you may have limited time during your trip, or you might get hungry
• Bring cash, and you might need to exchange your money before crossing borders or at the immigration area
• Wear comfortable clothes during travel
• Check if you need a visa before traveling, for Vietnam, mostly needs an Evisa to enter and cross borders
• Immigration Offices are usually open at 7 AM, so you may need to sleep on the bus at the border
• Be prepared for people who take bribes in the immigration

We have travelled from Hanoi, Vietnam, to Singapore comfortably without taking a single flight – and so can you. South East Asia has an incredible public transport network and comfortable sleeper trains and busses connecting all the major tourist hubs.

Backpacking Southeast Asia Itinerary

Here are our suggested backpacking Southeast Asia itineraries for 1, 2, and 3 months. We have allocated a travel speed of 3 days per stop on average which is quite high but manageable.

Our 3 months in Southeast Asia itinerary starts in Hanoi in Northern Vietnam and works its way to South Vietnam where it crosses into Cambodia. After checking out Cambodia's highlights, you cross into Laos in the very south of the country. Here, you work your way to the north. 3 Months in Southeast Asia Itinerary

The 2 months in Southeast Asia itinerary follows the same trajectory as the 3 month itinerary but omits some stops.

The 1 month in Southeast Asia itinerary skips South Vietnam for time reasons and crosses over from Hanoi, Vietnam, to Luang Prabang, Laos. In Laos you make your way to the south, ending your itinerary in Cambodia.

Vietnam Itinerary

Vietnam has an elongated shape. Most travellers travel north to south or vice versa.

North Vietnam is the highlight for many travellers. You’ll find the capital Hanoi, rice paddies, rugged mountains, as well as the world-famous Halong Bay.

In northern Vietnam, you can mix and match most stops as your travels will most likely bring you back to Hanoi at least once.

It makes sense to combine Sapa and Ha Giang if you want to do both.

How to Find your Perfect Vietnam Homestay

Homestay Vietnam Guide - including the best places to stay!

Vietnam grants most travellers a 30 day visa.

We have included 13 stops in our itinerary. This means 30 days / 13 stops = 2 days per stop which is very ambitious.

Distances are far in Vietnam and travel times are long. Even with night buses and trains, you will most likely need to make decisions on which places to visit and which ones to skip based on your preferences.

There are two options for getting from Vietnam to Cambodia:

• Bavet border from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh
• Prek Chak border from Phu Quoc to Kep/Kampot

We took the bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh which was very straightforward.

If you’re in Phu Quoc, it does not make sense to circle all the way back to Ho Chi Minh City to go to Phnom Penh just to go to Kampot afterwards. It’s just a 40-minute drive from Ha Tien (where the ferry to Phu Quoc leaves) to Kep. There is one easy direct bus per day. We have met several travellers who took this route so the bus seems to be running post-Covid.

Depending on your citizenship, it should be easy to obtain a visa on arrival. E-Visas are currently not accepted at the Prek Chak border.

Cambodia Itinerary

The situation in Cambodia is more complicated. The road conditions and tourist infrastructure is not as good as in Vietnam. You might have to circle back to Phnom Penh, depending on your preferred itinerary.

Visiting Kampot Salt Fields on Traeuy Kaoh

A short travel guide to the salt fields in Kampot on Fish Island - including a Kampot map.

The most famous Cambodian islands are:

• Koh Rong Samloem
• Koh Ta Kiev

The first three islands can be accessed from Sihanoukville . Koh Rong is the largest and most famous island in Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem is a backpacker paradise, and Koh Ta Kiev gives you Robinson Crusoe Feelings. It makes sense to spend as little time in Sihanoukville itself as possible.

The laid-back Koh Tonsay can be reached from Kep.

As mentioned above, you might have to circle back to Phnom Penh.

It’s easy to combine Kep , Kampot , and Sihanoukville in the south.

Battambang could be a nice stopover between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Kompong Cham and Banlung might be good additions to Kratie but the post-Covid bus situation is not back to normal as of writing this blogpost so we can not provide reliable transport information.

Cambodia grants most travellers a 30 day visa. We suggest a maximum of 10 stops in Cambodia, which should be doable if you don’t stay on the islands too long.

No matter if you start your journey in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Kratie, your first stop in Laos will be most likely Don Det in the 4000 islands.

The border crossing is not frequented as much and you will be expected to pay small bribes to everyone but besides that, you should not encounter any problems. E-Visas are currently not accepted at this border.

Laos Itinerary

Laos, like Vietnam, has an elongated shape. Again, most travellers travel north to south or vice versa.

Many people skip southern Laos. It’s a shame because this was our favourite part of this country. Don Det was seriously chill and the countryside around Pakse and Thakhek was breathtaking.

This part is on most people’s Laos radar and hence the most touristy. It’s still worth a visit but you will not do this country justice by skipping the other parts.

Many people skip this part of Laos to take the slow boat from Luang Prabang to Ban Houayxay / Thailand. We strongly advise you to visit northern Laos as it’s off-the-beaten-path and authentic with stunning nature.

Best Hostels in Laos under 10$/Night (2023)

Laos grants most travellers a 30 day visa. We suggest a maximum of 10 stops in Laos, which should be doable if you don’t stay on Don Det too long.

In the case of Laos, we recommend you to visit all the stops we suggest because we loved them all and you easily travel from one to the next. Depending on your travel speed, this will take you 17 to 28 days which is more than most travellers will spend in Laos but not enough if you ask us.

21 days Thailand, Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia

Laos was a country I’d like to explor further, the accommodations were great and the people terrific. Hoi An Village villas was a jewel, the service was excellent, the area around it a real highlight, especially the local people. Ha long over night boat trip was another wonderful experience. We could have made a week of it, if we were taken to other sights further away. The whole trip was one of the best I’ve done.

The 7 best road trips in Vietnam

Long and sinuous, like the mythical naga serpent, Vietnam curves around the eastern shores of mainland Southeast Asia, stretching all the way from China in the north to Cambodia and the Mekong Delta in the south. Its twin megacities – Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City – are divided by 1137km (707 miles) of mountains, jungles, paddy fields, beaches and historic sites. In other words, this is perfect country for road-tripping. 

The trip between Vietnam's northern and southern capitals is just one of many epic road trips that call out to adventurers on four (or, more commonly, two) wheels. With more than 61 million motorbikes on Vietnam's roads, intrepid bikers will find themselves in good company as they explore the country’s wonderfully diverse landscapes, with ample repair shops, gas stations and food stops along the way.

Whether you’re thinking of hitting the road by car or motorbike, here’s our pick of Vietnam’s best road trips.

1. Ha Giang Loop

Best road trip for wild swimming and mountain passes Ha Giang–Ha Giang; 350km (218 miles)

The soaring peaks and plunging valleys of Vietnam’s northernmost province are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, with plenty of stop-offs for revitalizing dips in waterfalls, roadside snacks (nothing keeps energy levels up like dried buffalo), and to snap photos of the rice and corn terraces tumbling down the valley’s steep hillsides. Start the adventure in Ha Giang city, the gateway to a land of conical, forested peaks plucked straight from an antique scroll painting.

Ha Giang means "water and mountains" in Vietnamese, and you’re never far from either when you tackle this loop through Yen Minh, Dong Van and Bao Lam, with gurgling streams and cascading waterfalls forming a major part of the scenery. Winding its way through communities of at least 10 different ethnic minorities, this rewarding multi-day drive offers plenty of opportunities for side trips and activities, including trekking , river-boating and caving.

Planning tip:  The Ma Pi Leng Pass is hands down the most scenic section of the drive, with jagged mountains surrounding the emerald Nho Que River. Remember to factor in a half-day for a quiet boat trip with a spot of swimming in its enticing waters.

2. Cao Bang to Ban Gioc

Best road trip through Vietnam's countryside Cao Bang–Ban Gioc; 80km (50 miles)

The drive from Cao Bang to the churning Ban Gioc Waterfall , which straddles the China–Vietnam border, takes adventurers through some of Northern Vietnam’s most pristine pastoral terrain. Lush farmlands, stilt villages and crystal-clear lakes are all on the itinerary. However, for driving enthusiasts, nature's creations might be outdone by an artificial wonder: the 3.5km-long (2.1 miles) Ma Phuc Pass, with its seven writhing bends offering gorgeous views of the terraced fields below. 

For more natural highlights, consider a stop-off at the vast, stalactite-filled Nguom Ngao Cave , which extends for several kilometers underground, but save plenty of time for the road trip’s primary focus. Fed by the Quay Son River, the Ban Gioc Waterfalls are located partly in China and partly in Vietnam, and they thunder dramatically over a series of greenery-draped shelves. Take in the falls from the viewing platforms or hop on a bamboo raft for a closer look at the impressive cascades, which fall over 30m (98ft).

Planning tip:  While worth tackling as a standalone trip, this route is also a popular add-on to the Ha Giang Loop.

3. Dalat to Nha Trang

Best road trip to a French colonial hill station Dalat–Nha Trang; 134km (83 miles)

From the cool climes of the highlands around  Dalat to the sunny beaches of Nha Trang , this short and simple road trip is all about changing scenery and microclimates. Get an early start so you have time to appreciate the hilly terrain en route and the coastal views near the end of the drive.

Begin in the hillsides around Dalat, founded as a salubrious hill station where French colonists came to escape the oppressive heat of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). This is a unique area of Vietnam, where the scent of pine trees hangs in the air and farms cultivate strawberries, coffee and flowers instead of rice.

As you descend from the mountains and the humidity begins to return, things start to feel more conventional. The paved QL27C road unfurls around hills and snakes through tiny villages all the way to the coast, where a dip in the turquoise waters of Nha Trang Beach makes for a worthy close to this trip.

4. Hai Van Pass

Best road trip for dramatic views and hairpin turns Danang–Lang Co Beach; 20km (12 miles)

Before the Hai Van Tunnel was completed in 2005, just the thought of enduring the hairpin turns and blind corners of the Hai Van Pass was enough to send shivers down the spines of bus passengers traveling between Danang and Hue . Now with significantly less car traffic, this short but stunning ride is a manageable, memorable trip even for the novice driver.

Translating as "Ocean Clouds" in Vietnamese, the Hai Van Pass is bordered by jungle-clad mountains on one side and cliffs plunging down to the East Sea on the other, a dramatic setting that has made this road one of the most Instagrammed highways in the world – with a whopping 4298 pictures per mile!

Detour:  Stop at the mid-way point for a Vietnamese-style iced coffee and admire the Indochina-era Hai Van Gate and the remains of several French fortifications. While the pass officially ends at the windswept Lang Co Beach at its northern end, most travelers continue for another hour or so to reach the former imperial city of Hue to gaze at its palaces and timeless tombs.

5. Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho

Best road trip along the lush Mekong Delta Ho Chi Minh City–My Tho; 70km (44 miles)

The rice paper-flat Mekong Delta doesn’t get much road trip love because its every-shade-of-green rice fields can turn from mesmeric to slightly monotonous as the miles mount up. However, once you get outside of sprawling, smoggy Ho Chi Minh City , you’ll see the urban shrubbery give way to majestic palms, lush banana trees and glimmering waterways amongst the emerald rice paddies.

While the scenery here is certainly evocative, the best part of driving in the Mekong Delta is taking your foot off the gas and losing yourself in the tiny riverside laneways and byways, where life moves at a very different pace to the buzzing streets of HCMC.

When you eventually make it to My Tho – a town famed for its chewy noodle, pork and shrimp soup – further cultural experiences await, with the flower farms of Sa Dec a short drive to the west and Can Tho , home to the largest floating market in the Delta, located to the southwest.

6. Con Son Island

Best road trip for deserted island beaches Dam Trau–Ben Dam; 25km (15 miles)

Isolated from the mainland for years, the Con Dao islands are one of Vietnam’s natural wonders. Con Son, the largest and only inhabited island of the archipelago, has just one main road stretching across its length – a motorcycle trip is not only the best way to see the rural splendor of the island but also to hop from one gorgeous deserted beach to the next.

Start at Dam Trau, a long stretch of beach dotted with seafood shacks near the airport, and wind your way past forested hillsides, a French colonial-era prison, and a string of glorious beaches that only appear during low tide, ending up at Ben Dam where ferries from the mainland come and go. Take things slowly over a morning or afternoon, and bring your swimming costume.

7. Ho Chi Minh Highway

Best road trip for quintessential Vietnam experiences Ho Chi Minh City–Hanoi; 1880km (1168 miles)

There are several different routes between Vietnam’s two biggest cities, depending on whether you like beaches, mountains or smooth highways, but for the best balance between driving time (about two weeks) and excellent scenery, hit the Ho Chi Minh Highway, part of which was once used to transport soldiers and supplies during the Vietnam War.

After exiting busy Ho Chi Minh City, follow the road along the Truong Son mountain range as it snakes its way past sleepy hamlets, where the smell of coffee from nearby plantations hangs thick in the air. This barren plateau gives way to forested mountains as you reach Central Vietnam, considered the most scenic stretch of this epic road trip.

Detour:  Adventurers will want to stop at Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park , home to the world’s largest cave, and Cuc Phuong , Vietnam’s oldest national park , located in the Red River Delta, before joining the throng of traffic on the ancient streets of Hanoi .

Travel through Laos on an unforgettable 10-day journey. Drive through bright green paddy fields, on empty jungle roads, and only stopping to gaze at the forest-covered cliffs above. Despite sharing a border with Thailand , Cambodia , and Vietnam , Laos is still under the radar as a travel destination. Luckily this gives it serenity and peace, which is the perfect accompaniment to the natural wonders of blue lagoons, epic caves, and crashing waterfalls.

Travelling in Laos: a 10-day Itinerary

Travel in Laos at a slow pace: 10 days allows for relaxation, as well as being able to fit in all the things to see and do. If you have less time and want to do the route faster, it could be easily done in 7-8 days. Here is the day-to-day itinerary to travel in Laos.

Day 1-4: Luang Prabang

Fly into the enchanting town of Luang Prabang . The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its architectural significance and excellent preservation of spiritual practices and customs.

Discover all the stunning gold-detailed temples, surrounded by vibrant purple and pink flowers. The spirituality of the town is at dawn, during the alms-giving ceremony, where orange-robed monks march together through the streets, receiving flowers and food from the town residents.

Day 5-8: Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a town for adventure lovers. Limestone karsts, providing awesome hikes and panoramic viewpoints, surround the town. Hire a motorbike and drive to one of the many turquoise lagoons and caves nearby.

The town, nestled on the banks of the beautiful Nam Song river, provides the perfect water playground for tubing or kayaking. Fill your days with exciting activities and end them by wandering in the stunning paddy fields at sunset.

From Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

The drive by car from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng takes around 5 hours. Traveling in Laos is a bit difficult as the roads are not (yet) well-developed. There are plenty of shared minivans you can take from the Luang Prabang bus station, leaving either in the morning or the afternoon.

A brand-new train track has opened and now provides a faster travel alternative between destinations.

Day 9-10: Vientiane

End your Laos travels in the capital city of Vientiane! Although it has the status of a city, it feels more like a town. As a result, you will only need a day or two to see all the things to do in Vientiane. Home to the grand presidential palace and plenty of impressive temples, the city is the perfect place to get your fix of culture and history. 

Laos during the war

During the Vietnam war, 2 million tonnes of bombs were dropped on Laos. Still to this day, some remain unexploded, and many Laotians have been hurt or killed as a result.

The COPE visitor center displays artifacts and films to explain the history, and they also work to help rehabilitate victims who have been affected. A very powerful experience and an essential visit in order to better understand the history of this resilient country.

Buddha Park, Vientiane

If you have time, take the morning to travel 25km outside of the city to the incredible Buddha Park. Here you will find a park filled with over 200 giant buddha statues, all with a slightly weird and wonderful look about them. It is a 40-minute bus journey but worth it to see a more unusual attraction.

From Vang Vieng to Vientiane

The journey to Vientiane takes approximately 1-2 hours by minibus on the new highway. You can also opt for traveling by the new train; this takes around 2 hours to the city center.

Tip: There is also an international airport in Vientiane, so depending on whether your flight arrives into Vientiane or Luang Prabang, you can reverse this itinerary.

Costs of Traveling in Laos

The cost of travel in Laos is very cheap. This is mainly because all activities are centered around nature. For example hiking to cliff points, exploring caves, or swimming in lagoons or waterfalls. Entrance to caves, lagoons, and also to cross bridges are not normally more than 1-2 USD. On a budget, travelers can expect to spend about 10-20 USD a day. If you’re able to spend a bit more you can stay in more high-end accommodation for a very reasonable price.

How to Get Around Laos

The infrastructure in Laos is not yet well developed. Roads are often dirt or unfinished which can make bus journeys slow, especially in the wet season when the roads can flood. Although this makes traveling in Laos more difficult, it is also what gives Laos its charm!

The new train between destinations is very convenient and fast but is also a lot more expensive if you are traveling on a budget.

You can travel through Laos by train or bus. Once at your destination, it is very easy to get around, either on foot or by hiring a motorbike. Songthaews are also widely available- a pick-up truck-style taxi.

Best Time to Visit Laos

To see the lagoons at their most turquoise blue, visit in the dry months between October to March. Keep in mind that October- February is the cooler part of the dry season. After this, temperatures can be hot, and the farmers start burning season in the fields which can cause the sky to be hazy and smoky.

October is a beautiful month to travel to Laos. This is just after the rainy season ends, when the rice fields will still be lush and green, the waterfalls will be running and the lagoons will be starting to look bluer.

Seasons in Laos

Laos has very different seasons, which can be difficult to navigate. You should choose which time of year you visit based on what you want to see. For instance:

Dry Season : if you are hoping for cooler temperatures, it’s a good idea to visit between October to March. However, at this time, it is likely the waterfalls may be dry and rice won’t be growing. Keep in mind that in March/April farmers begin burning season, which may create smoke that can cause problems for allergy sufferers. 

Rainy season : is from March-October and Laos sees it’s hottest temperatures in the first few months of the season. It can also be difficult to travel due to the rain and sometimes dangerous. The rice paddies will be green and luscious though, and it is the best time to see the waterfalls.

Tip: A good month to visit is October because it’s at the start of the dry season. The countryside will still be green and lush from the rainy season which has just ended.

Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Laos?

To travel to Laos, you will need to apply for an e-visa. The e-visa permits travelers to stay in Laos for 30 days and normally costs between 45 USD to 60 USD, depending on your country of residence. It is valid for single entry only to 5 different entry points in Laos and is valid for 60 days after receiving the approval letter.

Safety in Laos

Laos is very safe to travel in, and people are exceptionally friendly. Crime is very low, although some minor theft does occur. For this reason, it is good to carry your valuables with you, especially when you’re traveling on buses, as there have been cases of tourists having things taken from their bags.

Nelly & Jean Claude SALESSE - Depuis mon adolescence et la lecture de nombreux ouvrages et de carnets de voyage, j’ai toujours songé à visiter les pays d’Asie du Sud-Est, et plus particulièrement le Vietnam et ses charmants voisins le Laos et le Cambodge, qui semblent promettre mille merveilles.

La péninsule indochinoise a toujours exercé sur moi un fort pouvoir d’attraction. Qui n’a jamais rêvé de découvrir ses paysages légendaires comme la baie d’Halong, les rizières en terrasses, les jungles épaisses, de naviguer sur le mythique Mékong, d’explorer des villes chargées d’histoire comme Hanoi, Saigon, Luang Prabang ou Phnom Penh ?

Et quoi de mieux qu’un circuit de trois semaines pour une première découverte indochinoise et à mon rythme ? Après m'être longuement renseigné auprès de différentes agences de voyage locales et aussi des tours opérateurs en France (eh oui, un voyage à l’autre bout du monde, au Vietnam Laos Cambodge 3 semaines me coute une fortune quand même !), j’ai décidé de partir avec Vietnam Découverte qui était très réactive et toujours à mon écoute. En résumé, en réalisant ce circuit au Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge 3 semaines, j’ai déjà eu l’occasion de découvrir l’essentiel de l’ancienne Indochine , en se concentrant sur des destinations incontournables et des activités originales, telles que des rencontres avec des ethnies minoritaires, de la randonnée, des balades à vélo ou encore des balades en sampan.

J’ai beaucoup apprécié le rythme modéré , on ne passe pas son temps à courir de ville en ville dans l’espoir de visiter chaque recoins en un temps record, au contraire, l’itinéraire est pensé de façon astucieuse, de sorte à ce que cette première approche nous dévoile les plus beaux endroits sans perte de temps. On ne fait pas d’impasses sur les centres d’intérêts, et on prend le temps d’apprécier le voyage.

3.1 Que faire au Vietnam?

Lors de mon voyage au Vietnam, au Laos et au Cambodge pendant 3 semaines, c’est le Vietnam auquel j’ai consacré le plus de temps car ce pays englobe un tas de belles destinations à faire. Avec ma femme, nous avons visité une dizaine de sites mais voici nos coups de cœurs :

La capitale du Vietnam est un incontournable lors d’un séjour au Pays du Dragon. J’ai particulièrement apprécié son ambiance trépidante et sa vitalité typiquement asiatique. J’ai adoré flâner dans son vieux quartier des 36 rues et corporations dont le charme et la réputation n’est plus à faire.

La balade autour du lac Hoan Kiem, le lac de l’épée restituée, est très reposante. J’ai apprécié pouvoir me déplacer en cyclo-pousse à travers la ville pour visiter certains des sites touristiques emblématiques c omme le célèbre temple de la Littérature, la cathédrale Saint Joseph, l’élégant opéra de Hanoï ou encore des anciens bâtiments datant de l’époque coloniale, un vrai héritage architectural français . À vrai dire, Mai Chau n’a pas été dans la liste des sites que je voulais visiter. C’était la conseillère en voyage de Vietnam Découverte qui m’a conseillé de l’ajouter au programme et je suis très content d’avoir suivi sa recommandation. Mai Chau est une vallée de 3h de route de Hanoi. J’y suis allée au mois d’avril et c’est le moment où les riz commencent à grandir.

J’ai eu donc l’occasion d’admirer les belles rizières en terrasse verdoyante s, une « spécialité » du Nord Vietnam. Se balader au milieu des paysages somptueux, des immenses tapis de rizières et des villages constitués de maisons sur pilotis en respirant le grand air pur est un des moments le plus fort lors de mon voyage Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge 3 semaines.

La baie d’Halong

S’il y a bien un endroit mythique au Vietnam, c’est sans conteste sa splendide baie d’Halong , dont la beauté est vantée aux quatre coins du monde. Impensable donc de se rendre au Vietnam sans prendre le temps d’effectuer croisière féerique à travers le plus grand karst marin au monde, classé au patrimoine de l’Unesco. Et croyez-moi, les paysages valent largement le détour.

Je vous conseille d’effectuer votre croisière dans la baie de Lan Ha ou la baie de Bai Tu Long, toutes les deux voisines d’Halong, tout aussi majestueuses mais qui ont l’avantage d’être moins fréquentées. J’ai passé deux jours merveilleux dans cet univers minéral et marin de toute beauté que l’on apprécie particulièrement à fleur d’eau, lors d’une balade à kayak aux pieds de ces géants de pierre empesés de végétation.

Hoi An, charmante vielle ville

Quelle ville charmante et reposante ! J’ai été séduit par la cité aux milles lanternes dont le centre historique a superbement bien conservé, à un très haut degré d’authenticité, son tissu urbain traditionnel. Ce fut un véritable plaisir que de déambuler dans les rues et ruelles de la vieille ville de Hoi An pour découvrir un ensemble bien préservé de plus de mille bâtiments à ossature de bois délicieusement patinés par les années et les pluies de mousson.

Ses caractéristiques culturelles et historiques évidentes et bien préservées lui ont valu d’être inscrite à l’Unesco. Ma femme, quant à elle, a particulièrement apprécié les boutiques et ateliers de soieries dans lesquelles elle a fait des habits sur-mesure de bonne qualité et pas chers. Pour le Sud du Vietnam, j’ai visité Ho Chi Minh ville et le delta du Mékong mais c’est le dernier qui m’a laissé des mémoires inoubliables. Je suis allé à Ben Tre, pays des cocotiers, petite bourgade située au bord des bras septentrionaux du Mékong et ai fait des balades en « xe loi », en petite barque à rames vraiment hors des sentiers battus.

Après une nuit chez Mme Thuy et sa famille chaleureuse à Vinh Long, j’ai découverte un original «commerce fluvial» en visitant le marché flottant de Cai Rang, l’âme de toutes les excursions au delta du Mékong. Une expérience intéressante à vivre absolument !

3.2 Que faire au Cambodge?

La deuxième grande étape de mon voyage au Vietnam, Laos Cambodge 3 semaines est consacrée au Cambodge. Après le marché flottant, j’ai continué à remonter le Mékong en bateau jusqu’à Phnom Penh, capitale Cambodgienne avant de rejoindre à Siem Reap.

À Phnom Penh , c’est surtout l’architecture qui m’a le plus marqué . En effet, l’architecture singulière de la ville reflète à la fois le style traditionnel et le style européen de la période coloniale qui a laissé une forte empreinte culturelle. Ainsi, les pagodes, les palais et les temples renvoient au style traditionnel tandis que la plupart des bâtiments administratifs et commerciaux s’inscrivent dans un style plus occidental.

Les temples d'Angkor

Le site archéologique d’Angkor à Siem Reap , bijou du patrimoine mondial inscrit à l’Unesco, est l’une des 7 merveilles du monde à voir absolument dans sa vie. J’ai vraiment été fascinée de découvrir ces ruines noyées dans la jungle dont l’existence a été révélée au monde en 1861 par le naturaliste français Henri Mouhot.

Répartis sur une superficie totale de 400 kilomètres carrés, entre villages paisibles, rizières, forêts humides et jungle dévorante, des centaines de monuments, tous différents, sont les vestiges de l'empire khmer qui a imposé sa puissance, son art et son architecture grandiose en Asie du Sud-Est du IXe au XVe siècle.

3.3 Que faire au Laos?

Le Laos est la dernière étape de mo n circuit au Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge 3 semaines. V u que mon temps est limité, je n’ai visité que Luang Prabang qui figure bien parmi les incontournables. Il s’agit de l’ancienne capitale royale du Lan Xang (royaume du million d'éléphants), et son patrimoine historique et culturel est d’une richesse incroyable .

J’ai particulièrement aimé son atmosphère emplie de quiétude et ses superbes temples. Si vous vous levez assez tôt le matin, vous aurez l’occasion de voir des centaines de moines provenant de différents monastères marcher à travers les rues afin de récolter l’aumône des habitants. Et, si vous n’êtes pas allergique au sport comme moi, n’hésitez pas à vous balader à vélo, vous aurez ainsi le loisir de découvrir autrement cette étonnante ville inscrite à l'inventaire des sites du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1995.

Selon mes recherches, les meilleurs périodes pour visiter ces 3 pays de l'Indochine varient selon les centres d'intérêt des visiteurs, cependant, le climat est au moins correct partout d'Octobre à Avril . C'est la saison sèche où le temps est agréable et vous aurez peu risque de pluie. La période de fin Janvier ou début Février (suivant le calendrier lunaire), est propice à des découvertes culturelles telles que la célébration du nouvel an vietnamien, le Têt. 

5 . Quelle sont les formalités requises ?

Les formalités requises lors d’un voyage au Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge de 3 semaines sont plutôt simples. N’oubliez pas que votre passeport doit être valide encore 6 mois après votre date de retour , au risque de vous faire refouler lors de l’embarquement.

Aussi, vous devrez obligatoirement vous munir d’un visa pour pouvoir entrer sur le territoire vietnamien (sauf exceptions) si vous comptez rester plus de 15 jours au Vietnam.

En ce qui concerne le Laos et le Cambodge, l’obtention d’un visa est obligatoire quel que soit la durée de votre séjour. Ce visa touristique vous permettra de voyager dans ces pays pendant 30 jours maximums et il est valable jusqu’à 3 mois après sa date d’émission.

Toutes les restrictions sanitaires concernant le Covid-19 ont été enlevées. Les voyageurs peuvent entrer au Vietnam sans besoin d’un passeport vaccinal, ni de résultat d’un test négatif pour le SARS-CoV-2, ni de déclaration sanitaire à l'arrivée. Pour le Cambodge et le Laos, ces deux pays sont totalement ouverts aux touristes vaccinés.

Bonjour Maria, Pour aller de Siem Reap à Luang Prabang, il convient de noter que la distance entre les deux villes est considérable. Étant donné cette longue distance, le vol est le moyen de transport le plus idéal pour effectuer ce trajet.

Je vous suggère de vous tourner vers des compagnies aériennes telles que Lao Airlines ou Vietnam Airlines. Elles proposent généralement des vols réguliers entre Siem Reap et Luang Prabang, ce qui vous permettra de gagner du temps et de voyager plus confortablement.

Ha Giang loop: 350km

Ha Giang is a mountain province in northeast Vietnam where you can easily find high mountains or deep valleys. Ha Giang loop has a total length of 350km and is considered as one of the toughest road trips in Vietnam. The most beautiful part starts from Ha Giang city to Yen Minh, Dong Van, over Ma Pi Leng pass.

On the way travellers can admire breathtaking mountain scenery, enjoy an interested boat trip to explore the emerald Nho Que River, hike through rice terraces or stop at some ethnic villages to learn more about cultural identities of local minorities groups, including Hmong, Tay and Thai.

Cao Bang – Ban Gioc: 80km

On the way tourists can stop at the viewpoint for a Vietnamese iced coffee, visit the remains of several French fortifications and admire the beautiful coast of Da Nang city.

Ho Chi Minh city – My Tho: 70km

This is the most important route in the southern Vietnam. It helps to connect Ho Chi Minh city and the provinces in Mekong Delta region. It is one of the most easiest road trips in Vietnam with just 70 kilometers length, taking around 1h30’ transfer.

The landscape along the way is quite simple with endless rice fields, cannot compare with mountain roads in the north. But it brings travellers a distinctive experience. Arriving in My Tho, the boat is waiting for you and the journey in the labyrinth of water canals in Mekong Delta begins.

Ben Dam – Dam Trau: 25km

This route Ben Dam – Dam Trau is the most beautiful road in the Con Son island, the biggest island of Con Dao archipelago. With the low population density, this island is perfect place for an escape.

The 25-kilometer journey starts from Ben Dam Port, where mainland ferries arrives. Travelers can wind their way past forested hillsides, French colonial prisons, before ending up at Dam Trau, a long stretch of beach near the airport.

The 10 Day Laos Travel Itinerary

Laos is a very beautiful country, which is still often overlooked by visitors to South-East Asia. Many tourists choose to spend the majority of their trip exploring its more popular neighbours such as Thailand and Vietnam. However, if you are looking for somewhere less crowded and touristy, I’d highly recommend heading to Laos. At the moment it’s still relatively quiet, but I’m sure it will start to increase in popularity over the next few years.

It’s well known for its beautiful nature, delicious Laotian food, and unique culture, as well as French colonial architecture throughout its cities. There’s plenty to do and see in Laos, and it’s a great budget travel destination. In this article, I’m going to share with you my top recommended places to visit in Laos that you definitely should add to your travel itinerary, to help you plan for your upcoming trip. 

Day 1 – 3 |  Vientiane

• Day 4 – 6 |  Vang Vieng 

Day 7 – 10 |  Luang Prabang

The best place to start your exploration of Laos is in Vientiane , the capital of Laos.

There are no long haul direct flights into Laos , however, Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport connects travelers with Bangkok and Chiang Mai by air. Alternatively, many travelers choose to use buses, which can connect you with many cities throughout South-East Asia and the other top places to visit within Laos. Vientiane is reasonably easy to navigate by foot or cycling. Beware of the sometimes over-inflated tuk-tuk prices for tourists.

When you arrive here, I’d suggest staying for about three nights, to help you acclimatize if you’ve just arrived in this part of the world. There is a reasonable amount of attractions to see within the city, but after a few days, you’ll be itching to explore the country further afield . In Vientiane, you will find plenty of hotels, hostels, and apartments to fit all budgets.

I would recommend the Vientiane Golden Sun Hotel if you are looking for somewhere lovely but inexpensive to stay. If you would like more of a holiday resort, consider the Landmark Mekong Riverside Hotel , which has a beautiful outdoor pool and spa onsite. Alternatively, you can find a bed in a hostel for only $3-4!

The hostel that I chose myself was NT Backpacker Hostel. It was very nice, clean and a small breakfast was included in the price of the stay, which was only $4 a night.

On your first day in the city, I’d recommend seeing some of the cultural highlights, such as the Wat Si Saket . This Buddhist temple is located on Lan Xang Road and previously held the Emerald Buddha. Temple features over 10,000 Buddha Statues.

Following on from this, admire the Wat Si Muang built in 1563. I loved the incredible architecture of the buildings of Vientiane, and witnessing these monuments is the perfect way to start your trip.

Later on in the day, visit the COPE Visitor’s Center . This museum shows the country’s history regarding the Vietnam War, and the tragic bombing campaigns the country has experienced. It’s a very educational and eye-opening center, and well worth supporting their cause. Finally, finish off your day by seeing the Pha That Luang stupa , which you may recognize as the landmark on your currency. 

The following day, enjoy visiting the Patuxay Monument , also called the Victory Gate, and spend some time people-watching in the nearby park. One of the highlights of Vientiane for me was the fantastic street food, and I’d recommend having dinner one night at the Anou Market. Alternatively, take a trip to the night market along the Mekong Delta, which has an extensive selection of stalls and was one of my favorite markets in Laos. If you have been missing good coffee on your trip so far, you’ll be pleased to know Laos has a great café culture.

Day 4 – 6 |  Vang Vieng  

Next up on our itinerary is the time to move on to Vang Vieng . It is the place where I’ve seen some of the most magical sunsets while in South-East Asia.

Vang Vieng is a more relaxed town with magnificent mountains and green nature surrounding it. From Vientiane, expect the 80 miles (130 km) journey to take about four hours by bus or van. The cost of this journey is usually around $7 and you can book it through 12go.Asia website. The road is very scenic so make sure to look out the window and enjoy the ride.

The town is located near the Nam Song River, north of Vientiane. It’s known for its amazing limestone formations and is the perfect location for active adventures.

There are plenty of affordable guesthouses to stay in here. One of the greatest options is the Riverside Boutique Resort with its stunning mountain views from the swimming pool. If you would like to go for the cheapest option and sleep in a hostel than Chillao Hostel will be a great option that costs less than $3 a night.

I’d recommend you to spend at least three days in Vang Vieng , especially if you want to explore the area properly and spend time biking or hiking in nature.

Some of the highlights of my time in Vang Vieng included going tubing and kayaking along the river. Tubing used to be the most popular party activity among the backpackers. After several deadly accidents, it’s not that big as it used to be but it’s still a very nice thing to do and enjoy Laos’ beautiful nature scenery.

I’d also recommend taking a hiking trip and exploring the nearby caves. Tham Nam is the most popular one to visit in the area, and if you are visiting during the rainy reason, you can even tube into the cave. The stalagmite and stalactite formations are terrific inside!

Don’t forget to visit the Blue Lagoon & Tham Phu Kham Cave . This lagoon stays the most blue throughout the whole year and jumping in it is a great activity to do on a hot day. You can even go zip lining in this area.

The best way to sightsee in Vang Vieng is to rent a bike , which your accommodation may offer. This will allow you the freedom to explore the areas around the town while admiring the surrounding scenery and admiring the stunning landscapes. After a busy day exploring, make sure you enjoy some of the local delicacies, and of course, you’ll find the most delicious food at different stalls throughout the town. 

Luang Prabang was hands down one of my favorite places that I got a chance to visit while in Laos. The city is located even further north than Vang Vieng and it’s included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The journey is 113 miles (183 km) between Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang , and most travelers again opt for a van or taking a bus. Expect the trip to cost somewhere around $10 and last between five to six hours. The road is very bumpy and curvy but again it’s all worth it for those window views.

To make the most of your time in Luang Prabang, I’d recommend allowing at least four days to explore the city, which will also allow some time to relax. My top choices for budget-friendly accommodation in the area include Singharat Guesthouse or for an even cheaper option, I highly recommend the City Backpackers Hostel , the price for which was also around $3.

Luang Prabang will amaze you with its incredible architecture, with many nods within the designs to its French colonial heritage. The whole atmosphere is so unique and amazing that I can’t wait to return there again in the future.

There are many temples to see in the city, and my favorite was the Wat Chom Si shrine . You will find it at the top of Mount Phou Si , overlooking the city. It is the most popular place to visit to watch the sunset, so make sure to arrive early to get the best spot.

Another very interesting thing that you can watch in Luang Prabang is the morning alms-giving ceremony . It takes place every day during the sunrise time when local people give food to the monks. Don’t forget that it’s a part of Lao culture and history, so be respectful and only watch quietly from afar. 

If you enjoy seeing the variety of designs within the temples in South-East Asia, you’ll appreciate the Wat Xieng Thong temple. There are over twenty buildings on the property, and it’s well worth exploring to admire the elaborate designs.

For travelers looking for more active adventures, you’ll love exploring the Pak Ou Caves , which are usually incorporated into hiking trips. If you love chasing waterfalls, make sure to take a trip to Kuang Si Waterfall . It was for sure one of the top waterfalls that I visited in South-East Asia and at least a 3-hour trip there is well worth it. 

Speaking of food, a trip to Luang Prabang is not complete without exploring the night market, which opens every evening from 5 to 10 pm. It’s a great place to have an inexpensive dinner. Pick up a Beer Lao and enjoy strolling around the stalls to pick up some souvenirs for your friends and family back home.

No matter what you do, don’t leave Laos without trying the coconut pancakes. They are very simply made out of 3 ingredients but yet so delicious. After trying them for the first time, I was having them every single day, even twice a day.

Laos is an incredible country to explore, and I loved my time there. I want to share with you a few of my top travel tips for visiting Laos, to help make your next trip a great one!

• As tempting as it may be, I would recommend not visiting the elephant parks in Laos, especially taking part in any experiences involving riding them. Elephants are extremely endangered, with only approximately 800 left in Laos.
• If you have more time on your trip, consider taking a slow boat journey for a few days. These usually travel between Huay-Xai and then finish in Luang Prabang . You’ll enjoy the local hospitality while admiring the countryside from the waters. You can also extend your trip and continue down south to Don Det & 4000 islands.
• Accommodation of any type is generally pretty cheap in Laos, so this may be a great country to splurge in. If you are doing a tour of a few countries, know that your money will go much further here!
• Food is a little more expensive here than in Thailand , however by avoiding overpriced Western food and enjoying local street food, you can eat very well on a budget.
• Tuk-tuks and taxis are known to increase their prices for tourists, so stick to biking, walking, or local buses.
• When traveling between cities, consider upgrading to the VIP buses. These are air-conditioned buses which will offer you a little more comfort on your journey and won’t cost a lot.
• Between October and April is the best time to visit Laos. It’s hot and dry during this time, although being the high season you can expect higher accommodation prices and more tourists.
• If you are hiking independently, always stay on marked paths. It’s best to always try and join a tour if you are traveling alone, or buddy up with other travelers. That’s another reason why I love staying in hostels so much.
• For anyone planning to do any of the active adventures on offer, such as tubing and biking, ensure you have adequate travel insurance that covers these types of activities.

Laos is one of the hidden gems of South-East Asia and is the perfect country to add on to a trip to Thailand , Cambodia , or Vietnam . It’s extremely manageable to travel between the highlights of the country, and the bus system is cheap and efficient to use.

Days 3–5: Chiang Mai

When traveling to Chiang Mai, flights of under 1½ hours are more comfortable than 10-hour trains or private road transfers.

A Chiang Mai trip is not complete without a foodie tour, the flower market, and Elephant Jungle Sanctuary . Usually, we'd suggest you have a city sightseeing day, visit an elephant sanctuary for a day, and enjoy some free time before an onward flight.

If you're travelling in November, the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong lantern festivals in Chiang Mai offer the perfect backdrop for romantic milestone trips.

Days 6–8: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay
