Thanks TFG for the best Packing Checklist! I use it everytime I go! And this year, 2022, I’ve been making up for not being able to go for the past two years. After a cruise in March and a month in Hawaii in the summer, I’m now packing for a Baltic cruise after a couple of days in London. The destination lists for London, Finland, Norway, etc. have been so very helpful, too. I’m pretty confident that I’ve packed what I’ll need. Haven’t yet tried carry-on-only and probably never will, but I’m pretty proud that I put at least 5 items back into the closet instead of in my suitcase this time!

I pack one cube with everything I’ll need for the night and the next morning. This way I dion’t always need to unpack the whole bag, and can leave everything in place for the first night . Sometimes this means I don’t have to schlep a heavy bag upstairs when I’m tired–I can leave it downstairs and deal with everything once I’m rested.

I’m *so* with you when it comes to packing cubes. They make it super easy to find what I need, and it helps me fit more than I thought possible into my backpack. I’m also a HUGE fan of earplugs. I’ve used them on the train or bus to sleep, on the plane to drown out engine noises, and at loud concerts. I highly recommend getting custom silicon earplugs that you wash off and use again, especially if you have trouble using the foam ones (like I totally do no matter how many times I try).

So in going through the Ultimate Packing List (thank you for this by the way), I have a question about the clothes the traveler is wearing! I assume that’s included in the 10 items, but per the packing list, they are packed in something. You don’t get an extra set of clothes on top of the 10 items, right?? 🙂

For my Russia packing list (pre-UPL), I listed out all the items and then listed what was going in my suitcase, what in my backpack and then finally, what I was wearing! 😀

I have been using these packing lists this Spring and Summer and they have totally changed the way I plan and pack for a trip! I love being able to customize it. There’s a lot of different types of products that need to be stored during travel, but finding those emergency items is what’s important when you’re out there all prepared! These print-out lists are exactly what I’ve been using for myself since high school, & for nostalgia sake, that original template I put together & taped over to “laminate” it, is still there slipped behind the zippered space in my overall bathroom bag. How to pack efficiently to save space in your luggage?

• Documents and tickets . Make sure to have all your documents in order. This includes your passport, visa (if required), tickets, and other important papers.
• Pack your clothes . Depending on where you're going and the activities you have planned, you'll need to pack different items.
• Clothing . Be sure to pack both casual and dressy clothes. Do not forget to pack a swimsuit if you're planning on spending time at the beach or pool.

Free Printable Amazingly Detailed Travel Packing Checklist

At the end of this post download your free printable travel packing checklist! I have been very fortunate to travel a lot; I have been to New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, Canada, and 29 of the United States. Also, I live in Louisiana and my family lives up North so I have traveled alone, with kids, many times. 

My husband, daughter, and I traveled to New Zealand with one suitcase each! Over the years I have perfected my packing list. I feel prepared for most things that may come up on the trip and know that I can go to the store or borrow for others.  You can download the list and add to it your needs as you wish! 

Beauty and Health Items for your travel packing checklist

All of the liquid essentials (lotion, Castille soap, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, essential oils, gel) can be included if you buy the appropriate size travel bottles. Do not pack the full bottle of anything. This may take more time to pack but is key to making your suitcase smaller and lighter. I transfer what I need of my prescriptions and what I may need of over-the-counter medications into baggies. Have another baggie for dry health items. Make sure if you are flying to have the liquid baggie at the top so you can take it out at the airport.

One thing that I try to not forget is my Marquette monitor, strips, and small sealable pee container (old small spice container). I have had to test in airports and other discrete situations before, but I did what I had to in order to keep track of my cycle. 

Clothing and Miscellaneous Items

Pack weather-appropriate, naturally, and make room for some creature comforts like slippers and your favorite loungewear. I have included ideas for temperate climates, cold weather, and beach weather. 

The Carry On items 

If you are flying, it is important to keep some items within reach.  I travel with only carry-ons so I know I have everything with me but once you are strapped in, it can be hard to reach items at the bottom of your carry-on. I have made this mistake several times and suffered dry lips or smudged glasses the whole flight because I couldn’t find what I needed. I now keep a baggie with lip balm, eyeglass cleaner, gum, phone, kindle, headphones, and tissues in a reachable pocket. 

Travel Packing Checklist for Kids

For kids remember to bring some of their favorites: sippy cup, stuffed animal, book, toy, etc. Snacks, preferably something they don’t eat all of the time, are a must. I also like to go to the dollar store and get a new trinket that will keep them happy for a bit. I download movies and shows onto the kindle fire for them to be able to watch offline ahead of time. It won’t always go smoothly because traveling with kids can be a challenge on their moods, but I have found many kind souls to help me along the way. (A woman bought me Starbucks coffee because I didn’t have enough hands and she knew I was exhausted, a man gave my child a chocolate lollipop to keep her from crying on the plane, and we dropped a yogurt parfait that was replaced for free!)

Bathroom Kit

These are items that you would bring as part of your bathroom kit.  This includes items such as soap, makeup, shampoo, conditioner, dental floss, toothbrush, hair brush, nail brush, hand lotion, etc.

These are items that you would bring to do your makeup.  This includes items such as eye liner, foundation, etc.

These are jewelry items that you would consider bringing on your trip.  These are things such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and watches.

These are photography items.  These are items that you would take if you are going to take photographs with something other than your camera.  This includes digital camera, memory cars, tripod, lenses, lens clothes, etc.

These are medical supply items.  These are items such as prescription medications, bandages, aspirin, ibuprofen, antacid, vitamins, sunscreen, wheelchair, etc.

These are assorted items that you may want to take on your trip.  These are things such as pen, paper, laundry soap, umbrella, sewing kit, books, corkscrew, bible, etc.

These are running wear items that you may want to take on your trip if you will be running or jogging.  These items include running shoes, running socks, sweat pants, running shorts, etc.

Sun Destinations

These are items that you may want to take with you if you are travelling to a sunny destination or going to the beach.  These items include things like beach towels, snorkel and mask, beach umbrella, drink cooler, beach mat, coverup, etc.

Ski Destinations

These are items that you may want to take with you if you are travelling to a ski resort or going skiing.  These items include things like skis, ski poles, ski tickets, helmet, ski jacket, ski pants, thermal underwear, etc.

Camping Supplies

These are items that you may want to take with you if you are going camping.  These items include things like sleeping bags, pillow, tent, cot, food, utensils, cooler, chairs, etc.

Golf Equipment

The Ultimate Travel Packing Checklist for 2024 and the Best Vacation Packing Tips (Printable)

Before taking a vacation, it’s a good idea plan. In addition to planning your itinerary, you also need to figure out what you will pack. Taking the time to sort out what you need to bring before you leave is an excellent way to prepare well for your trip. Before you begin packing, it’s best to think more about the trip you will be taking. After all, not all trips are the same, and some trips may require different items.

• What bags to bring: Your travel plans and airline’s baggage policy may dictate what bags you bring. Knowing what bags you plan to bring before you begin packing is a must. That way, you can strategize and not overpack based on the luggage space available. 
• Number of travel days: You want to have plenty of clothes and essentials for your entire trip. Make sure that you pack plenty of items for the number of days you plan to travel. If you’re staying in a home rental with laundry facilities, you may be able to pack less and do laundry during your trip. If you prefer to pack light, check to see if you’ll have access to laundry facilities or if there is a laundromat near your accommodation. 
• The weather situation: You want to make sure that you pack clothes that will be comfortable for the weather. Check the expected temperature, see if there will be rain or snow, and let this information guide you when packing. If you don’t pack appropriate clothing and gear, you may have to spend money when you arrive or risk being very uncomfortable. If you have room, bring a compact umbrella.
• The type of trip you plan to have: Your planned activities and travel style will also dictate what you need to pack. If you’re all about comfort and hope to lounge around a lot, you may not need to pack many dress clothes. If you’re an adventure seeker who plans to participate in recreational activities, athletic attire and appropriate shoes are necessary. 
• What you can buy at your destination: Some items may make more sense to buy at your destination. For example, if you’re only bringing a carry-on bag, you might decide to buy a bottle of full-size sunscreen after you arrive. How to Decide Which Items to Put in Which Bags

When it comes time to pack for your trip, take some time to think about which bag each item will go in; for example, if you’re planning to check luggage, some things may make more sense to go in your checked bag rather than your carry-on bag. Additionally, some items may not be allowed in your carry-on bag—such as full-sized liquid products.  

If you take any medication or have other essential items that you’re packing, those items should stay close to you—such as in a carry-on bag or personal item, like a backpack or purse. Checked bags may get lost or delayed, and you don’t want to be without essential medications or other necessary items. If you’re packing medications, the TSA recommends they be clearly labeled. 

As you pack your carry-on bag, It’s also a good idea to bring at least one change of clothes with you. If something happens to your checked baggage, you’ll be thankful that you have some clothes to change into after traveling. 

If you’re traveling with a laptop or another electronic device, like an iPad, keep those items in an easy-to-access place (like upfront or in a laptop pocket). These items will need to be removed from your carry-on bag, purse, or backpack during security screening. If they’re not accessible, it will take you longer to get through security, and you’ll hold up the line.

Packing Liquids

As you prepare for your trip, don’t forget to consider which liquids you’ll need to bring. If you’re bringing some checked luggage, you’ll need to consider which liquid items will go in your checked bag vs your carry-on luggage.

If you’re traveling with multiple people, each person can have one quart-sized resealable bag with appropriately sized liquids. When you go through the security screening process at the airport, you’ll need to remove your bag of liquids and place it in a bin; You do not have to remove your liquids if you have TSA PreCheck or Global Entry . To conserve space, focus on packing liquids that you need. Most hotels and some home rentals provide essentials like shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Before packing, check to see what will be provided at your accommodation.

Packing Shoes

Most people plan to bring more than one pair of shoes when traveling. If you have several pairs of shoes that you want to bring, you may be worried about wasting space. But if you’re strategic, you can pack several shoes and make it work. 

One way to save on space is to use the empty area inside your shoes to your advantage. You can fill your shoes with smaller items such as socks, underwear, and belts. If you’re worried about dirty shoes, put disposable shower caps on the bottoms of your shoes. If you don’t have these, you can use smaller plastic bags to protect your clothes from dirt.

Ideas to Maximize Space

If you’re looking to maximize the space that you have available, you may be wondering how to pack your items to save room. Here are some techniques that may help: 

Packing cubes: Some travelers use packing cubes for their clothing items and accessories. These cubes can help by slightly compressing your items, so they take up a bit less space in your bag. If you’ve never tried packing cubes, it may be worthwhile to give them a chance. 

Rolling instead of folding: Another option to consider is rolling your clothes. This does take time,  but you may find that you’re able to fit more items in your bag this way. Just make sure that you remember to roll your clothes back up when packing up to head home. 

Choose versatile clothing items: You can also save on space by strategically choosing which clothing items you bring. Consider packing versatile clothing items that work well for multiple outfits. As an example, packing clothing with neutral colors is a great idea. You can wear items multiple times without it looking obvious. Doing this will make it easier to mix and match outfits, and you may find that you can pack fewer items. 

Buy some items at your destination: If you only have so much space to work with, buying some things at your destination may be the best bet. Make sure that you consider cost and availability before choosing to do this.

• Make a packing list and check each item off as you pack . It may seem silly, but this practice can help you avoid forgetting must-have items. You’ll be glad that you have what you need.
• Start with your must-have items. As you begin to pack, start with essential items. This way, you don’t forget to bring what you truly need. 
• Keep items packed up. Once you check an item off your list, ensure it stays in your packed bag. If you remove something and forget to make a note, you may end up leaving without it. 
• Don’t forget masks. When traveling during the pandemic, you’ll want to bring plenty of masks. Mask requirements vary by destination, and you want to make sure that you have what you need before you arrive. 
• Know your airline’s baggage rules. If you bring an overweight or too-large bag, you may get stuck paying extra fees. Check your airline’s sizing and weight rules before you begin packing, and double-check the weight once your bag is all packed up.  
• Consider wrinkles when choosing clothing items. Some fabrics are more wrinkle-resistant than others. If you don’t have access to an iron or a dryer, (I’m not the only one that de-wrinkles my clothes this way, right?!) try to pick materials that are less likely to get wrinkled. 
• Wear bulky items. Bulky items take up a lot of space and weight. If you plan to bring a bulky winter jacket or boots, for example, wear them on the plane. You’ll have what you need without taking up space and weight in your bag. 
• Do laundry while traveling. If at all possible, do laundry while traveling. Whether you stay in a home rental with laundry facilities or stop at a laundromat, this can help reduce the number of clothes you need to pack.
• Don’t overpack. It can be easy to overpack accidentally. Focus on what you truly need instead of bringing “maybe” items.
• Ensure your house is in order. Before leaving, make sure all of your lights are off and your alarm system is set if you have one. Other things to do include watering your plants, taking out the trash, setting automatic pet feeders, and notifying your credit card companies of your travel.

Toiletries in Your Hand Luggage Must Follow the 3-1-1 Rule

If you’re bringing your own toiletries in your hand luggage, be sure to follow the 3-1-1 rule . This means your toiletry bag must contain no more than 3.4oz (100ml) containers, must be sealed in a 1-quart (1L) clear, plastic, zip-top bag, and each passenger can only bring one bag. This rule applies to liquids, gels, pastes, creams, and aerosols.

The Rules for Traveling With Electronics

The rules for traveling with electronics depend on the airline, country, and airport that you’re flying to and from.

When traveling to or from the U.S ., for example, you should be aware of the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) rules for electronics. These rules require that all electronics larger than a smartphone must be taken out of your carry-on bag and placed in a separate bin for X-ray screening . This includes laptops, tablets, and e-readers.

It’s also important to note that some countries have restrictions on the type of electronics that you can bring into the country. Don’t Forget These Long-Haul Essentials for a Comfortable Flight

What to Look Out for When Shopping for New, Sturdy Luggage

When shopping for new luggage, you should look for a few key features to ensure you get a sturdy and reliable suitcase. Here are a few tips on what to look out for:

While hardside luggage made from ABS is likely to be the cheapest on the market, it’s also the most prone to damage. If you’re looking for a suitcase that will last, opt for a polycarbonate or aluminum piece. If you prefer softside luggage, go for a high-denier nylon or polyester piece.

Most hardside luggage is fitted with spinner wheels, which are great for maneuverability. However, take a look at the wheels to make sure they’re durable and have quality bearings. For softside luggage, in-line wheels provide excellent stability and can be rolled along almost any surface.

Make sure the handle is adjustable and sturdy. Ergonomically designed handles place the least strain on your wrists as you wheel your suitcase. You should also ensure that your suitcase has carry handles so it can be lifted with ease when needed.

Zippers & Locks

Opt for a piece with good-quality zippers and an integrated TSA lock. YKK zippers are considered the best on the market.

Many manufacturers offer a limited warranty that covers any defects in the material and workmanship. Make sure you read the warranty carefully and check the length of the coverage before you make your purchase.

The weight of a suitcase is largely dependent on the materials used to make the piece, and generally speaking, hardside suitcases usually weigh more than softside suitcases. If you’re considering a hardside suitcase, opt for one made from polycarbonate or ABS, as these are the lightest materials on the market. For softside luggage, nylon and polyester are the lightest materials.

How to Use the printable holiday Packing List PDF

Travel checklists are supposed to make things easier, not harder. So here’s how I’ve arranged things. 

• The essential sections come first. You need these for all trips. 
• They are organised in time order: ultimately, you can buy toiletries at most final destinations. You cannot fix missing medication or visas. 
• Specialist travel checklists come at the end . These cover road trips, flying with babies, hiking holidays and so on.
• You can download and print out the printable holiday packing list PDF. It’s not just a printout of this article; it’s a checklist. This article supports the printable checklist. It provides the background detail, so to speak.

Who is this Travel Packing List for?

I’ve really tried to make this accessible and useful, while also streamlined.

The ultimate holiday packing list works for men and women, international and domestic travel, travel to Europe and beyond. Certain sections link out to more hyper-focused lists, such as the cabin luggage essentials or what to pack for a walking holiday .

But don’t get too bogged down with this.

Your Printable Holiday Packing LIst: The Checklist Overview

Medical supplies.

Health should always come first. If travelling abroad or for any extended period of time, book an appointment with your doctor or nurse to check whether you need any vaccinations, antimalarial medications or a back up plan for your prescription supply. 

When it comes to packing, here are the essentials for any holiday packing list:

• Prescription medication – include a copy of the prescription, contact details for your doctor and pharmacy, a sharps box for any needles, and a plastic, airtight container to keep tablets from getting crushed.
• Paracetamol for all purpose pain and inflammation relief.
• A Travel First Aid Kit containing compeed blister protection, sticking plasters, antihistamines, antiseptic wipes, gaviscon, loperamide, sterile gauze and tape at a minimum. You can buy prepared first aid kits here.
• Sunscreen – pack at least factor 30 SPF and consider special sunscreen for your face. Children should have factor 50 SPF.
• Insect repellent, bug spray and bite treatment. I like this new, non-cream Bite Away gadget , which decreases itch and pain with a neuroscience-focused blitz of heat. You can buy one on Amazon here.
• Prescription glasses, sunglasses or contact lenses, with spares and your prescription.
• Travel sickness pills and bracelets if you need them.

Travel Documents and Holders

A good rule of thumb is to have a copy of everything on your phone and stored in the cloud. For really important documents, such as passports, make sure someone has a copy who is staying at home. 

Make sure to add to your holiday packing list:

• Passport and visas – you can arrange for a company to do this for you or complete the process yourself. Have a secure but quick access section for them. I use a plastic A4 folder for this. 
• Travel insurance documents. Forward a copy to someone at home and have a copy in your suitcase as backup. 
• Car documents if required (see this  road trip essentials checklist.)
• Contact numbers for key people and companies.
• Flight details, hotel details, phrases for your destination
• Paperwork for any medication, you may need to show your prescription.
• Paperwork for a child travelling with you who does not share the same family name.
• Loyalty cards and frequent flyer numbers.
• Travel money. Don’t take too much cash with you, though!

Travel Money Tips

Ooh, travel money deserves an article on its own.

Here’s the short version:

• Cash  – take some cash with you in the local currency but no more than you’d need for 1 – 2 days.  It’s also helpful to have some US dollars in small denominations to help you get out of any emergency situations. Avoid changing money at the airport or in large hotels as the rates are usually really high. If possible, book cash in advance by  following the advice from Money Saving Expert here.
• Credit cards – do take a credit card with you, with maybe one backup, but leave the rest at home. Contact credit card companies in advance so that they don’t block your card while you’re away. Put one into your checked luggage and one into your personal item. Set up text alerts for unusual spending so that you can cancel them the moment someone starts to use it for something dodgy.

Document Holders

The jury’s out on whether you need a money belt. These lightweight fabric holders slip beneath the waistband of your trousers and protect some of your money and important documents from being stolen by pickpockets. 

I would say that in most places in the world, you don’t need them. However, they are really useful if you will be sleeping anywhere in public (think long coach journeys, train journeys and backpacking) and in high crime areas. I would also suggest you also carry a wallet anyway. 

Yes, savvy criminals know that tourists wear them but so what? I’ve found them useful over the years in the situations I mention above.

Chic Document Holder

These days, though, I rarely need a money belt. Instead, I use a “grown up” document holder that helps to keep everything together. The ideal one should be zippable so that things don’t fall out and have space for a pen (for all those immigration forms and luggage labels.) As a bonus, it should have a wrist strap so that you don’t lose it at the airport among all the other commotion. 

I’m not a fan of passport holders as I don’t really see the point. You have to take your passport out at checkpoints and, well, it doesn’t really matter if the picture rubs off the outside of the passport ;-)

Plastic Document Holder

Yes, plastic has a bad name at the moment but at least these plastic wallets are reusable. Instead of carrying everything in the “nice” document holder, I put the essentials in there I’ll need for that day and everything else into an A4 plastic wallet that can be stashed in  my cabin luggage or suitcase.

Essential Luggage

Now we’re on to the fun part! Wait, not everyone finds testing out different bags or suitcases fun?! Weird.

Never skimp on having decent luggage. The fallout (quite literally) just isn’t worth it from substandard stuff. 

But what kind of luggage you need depends on your trip. I’ve written a guide to the best cabin luggage for all occasions here  for when you are travelling hand luggage only.

For checked-in bags or when you aren’t flying, your options are:

Only for the truly fit and strong. And only useful if you will be squeezing bags into small spaces on trains, small safari planes that won’t accept anything else, or if you plan on travelling anywhere where you will need to carry your luggage across sand, cobbles or anything else too uneven. 

I used backpacks for years and my back and shoulders have never really forgiven me. Don’t feel you need to. Most of the time, a wheelie is fine!

Backpack and Wheelie Combo

I tried one of these during my transition from backpack to wheelie. They are a useful idea but the zip up wheeled part does add weight and is quite uncomfortable to carry. The best I found was the Osprey Farpoint Travel Backpack.

Wheeled Luggage

Yes! Four wheels are better than two. Hard cases are good for travel to countries where you can’t be sure how secure your luggage is going to be. Soft cases are good for squeezing into car boots and trunks or trains in Europe. My favourites include the Samonsite wheeled luggage series for hard cases and the Osprey Transporter 120 for more of an adventure wheelie.

This is like the backpack only worse! Unless you are a tall, young, strapping, fit and able adult, avoid this. If you are, the Northface Duffel bags are very popular.

Your Travel Wardrobe Holiday Essentials

Start by sketching out each day of the trip, with a note on what you will be doing and wearing in the day and evening for each day. This should jog your memory for any unusual activities that require special gear and help make sure that you neither overpack or underpack. 

Think layers and think capsule wardrobe.

Travel Checklist Essential: A Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is just a fancy name for having clothes that you can mix and match and which all go together. This takes a bit of preparation.

It’s good to choose one neutral colour, one brighter colour and then one accent colour.

I tend to wear black, blue and yellow. They go together well and mix and match nicely. I also look out for things which don’t crease and which don’t need special care on the road.

Any trip longer than 10 days will require some laundry while you’re away, so don’t try to pack something for each day of a three week trip. 

Here’s the clothing holiday packing list:

• Underwear – one per day up to 10 days
• Socks – one pair per day up to 10 days
• Tops/T shirts/shirts- one per day up to 10 days
• Trousers – 2-3 per 10 days. One pair if hot weather destination.
• Shorts and skirts – 1 per 10 days. 2-3 if hot weather destination.
• Pullover/cardigan/jumper/jersey – one per five days
• Shoes – one snazzy pair, one casual pair. Both suitable for walking in.
• Dress – take out one top for each dress you pack.
• Do you need a blazer/jacket/ suit for this trip?
• Do you need any special sports clothes or beach wear?
• Do you need ties, jewellery, hats or hair accessories? If the answer isn’t a definite yes, it’s a no…
• Sleepwear if you wear it ;-) Or if you’re staying at your in-laws…
• Coat – ideally lightweight and low maintenance.

Inside tip: always make sure you have at least one outfit that covers your shoulders and ankles and one pair of shoes that aren’t flip flops. That covers most dress codes for temples, restaurants and so on.

Travel Gadgets

Another fun part! While many travel checklists include all kinds of travel gadgets that you don’t actually need, here are the bare essentials. With, well, OK, a few nice things throw in. 

• Travel adapter . 
• Multi plug port to help charge things from one adapter
• Noise-cancelling headphones
• Laptop or tablet and case (if required)
• Charging cables for all gadgets
• Travel camera
• Spare batteries or hard drives to store photos
• Torch or head lamp
• Cable organiser
• Can laptops go in checked luggage? What you need to know.

Travel Toiletries

Most of these are pretty generic but if you have something that really does the trick then make sure to stock up in advance. You can always pour it into smaller bottles if you need to.

Here are the ultimate holiday packing travel essentials for your toiletry bag:

• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Hairbrush and any gel, mousse, brush, what have you
• Moisturiser
• Sunscreen (in case you missed it higher up!)
• Mouthwash, dental floss, any other dental things
• Shower gel (ditch this if you’re staying in hotels)
• Shampoo and conditioner
• Tweezers, nail clippers or nail scissors
• Ear buds and ear plugs
• Make up and make up remover
• Feminine hygiene products like tampons and sanitary pads if required
• Razors and shaving cream
• Hairbrush, hairbands, other hair accessories

Travel Hack Gear

• Swiss army knife
• Food – dried packets of couscous, nut grain bars and rice cakes help out in emergencies.
• Tissues and toilet paper
• Packing cubes
• Travel pillow
• Book or magazine
• Safari vest for tight carry on situations. Fill the pockets with heavy items to extend your allowance. 
• Eye mask and ear plugs to help you sleep on a plane.
• Scarf. Doubles up as a pillow, covers shoulders or hair if needed and ties your luggage together if things break.
• A spare bag (folding, to fit in extra luggage or serve as a daypack while you are away.)
• Glasses case if you plan on using contacts on the ground.
• Travel umbrella
• Hand sanitizer.

Travel Checklist for Beach Holidays and Vacations

Yes, it’s your vacation packing list. For beaches and warm spots, make sure to pack:

• Swimwear x 2
• Lightweight cover up outfit
• Flip flops or sandals
• Lightweight bag you don’t mind getting sandy
• Plastic bags to carry home wet swimwear. Or are more eco-friendly, reusable wet bag like this.

Traveling internationally is an adventure best planned ahead of time, and not just when it comes to booking flights and packing. Sure, showing up at your gate sans passport or forgetting melatonin for your red-eye flight can put a damper on your long-awaited escape, but most of your preparation should be dedicated to ensuring health, safety, and financial necessities are covered. To save you some prep time, we’ve compiled this international travel checklist for your next long-distance journey.

Focus on Safety First

One of the easiest and most important items on an overseas travel checklist is also arguably the most ignored. Travel insurance and State Department alerts can be incredibly important in emergencies abroad, but many tourists bet they won’t become part of the small percentage of travelers who require evacuation assistance or protection from hotel or flight cancellations.

Subscribing to the State Department’s STEP alerts for your destination can help you stay up to date on upcoming and current travel restrictions, strikes, and areas of political unrest. Any alerts you receive will let you know whether or not to plan for some unexpected obstacles in advance.

Travel insurance can cost as little as a few dollars per travel day and cover anything from replacing a broken camera to emergency medical attention, potentially saving you hundreds, maybe even thousands of dollars.

Get Your Travel Documents and Credit Cards in Order

Make sure your passport and any necessary travel visas are up to date. Some countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months after your scheduled return, so make sure you won’t be turned away or delayed at customs because of an old passport. Keep physical and digital copies of your passport and all your paperwork in case anything is lost, and give copies as well as your itinerary and contact numbers to family and friends whom you can contact in case of an emergency.

Notify your bank and credit card companies about your travel dates so they don’t deny your purchases, and ask about international ATM fees so you can find out which ones won’t charge you. It’s always a good idea to bring multiple cards in case one stops working.

Don’t underestimate how helpful a cell phone photo of your passport can be. Whether you have to go to the consulate and report it lost, or are just filling out a customs card and need your passport number, it will likely come in handy. Email the image to yourself to have an extra digital copy in case your phone runs out of batteries or goes missing. You may also want to bring a spare copy of your passport photo on your trip; having it handy will speed the processing of a new document.

Get Vaccinated

It’s best to get the necessary vaccinations out of the way as soon as possible since it can take a few weeks to build full immunity. Some also require multiple doses, which may need to be administered over days, weeks, or even months. Talk to your doctor about getting the CDC-recommended shots , as the protocol for vaccines varies by country. For example, dozens of countries require proof of a yellow fever vaccination if you’ve been to at-risk areas. A travel clinic can help you sort out which vaccinations and medications you might need.

Keep your vaccination certificate in your carry-on in case customs requires you to present it when entering the country.

Study Up on Your Destination

Whether you’re a travel app connoisseur or more of a paperback guidebook person, having some source of knowledge about your destination is invaluable. Read about the region you’re traveling to in advance to gain insight into important information such as currency exchange rates, useful phrases, tipping norms , appropriate clothing, and cultural/legal customs. It’s best to be prepared so you don’t land yourself in a compromising situation.

There’s nothing worse than realizing once you’re six time zones away that you forgot to stop your mail delivery or ask someone to water your expertly cultivated house plants. Make sure your daily tasks are covered before you leave, or appoint a trusty friend to do them for you.

You can find a house or pet sitter to do your chores if you’re willing to list your home on TrustedHouseSitters.com . Plus, you could find lodging through the site for your trip abroad if you’re willing to spend some time with someone else’s furry friends.

Stay Connected

Want to stay in touch while traveling abroad? If you haven’t taken your phone overseas before, call your mobile provider to make sure it will work in the country you’re visiting and to ask about international phone plans that might be available. If your carrier’s plans are expensive, a mobile hotspot can be a cost-effective alternative.

Download the Necessities

Sometimes the most important thing you’ll pack is in your smartphone rather than your suitcase. Offline maps are your best friend when it comes to traveling with limited data or battery. You can find Wi-Fi in many places, but downloading offline maps through Google Maps or CityMaps2Go will allow you to follow your GPS without using up battery life and roaming data.

Downloading in-flight entertainment could also save you if your TV malfunctions on the long-haul flight. Streaming won’t be available without consistent in-flight Wi-Fi (which you shouldn’t ever depend on) but you can pre-download movies and TV shows through Amazon Prime , and music streaming service Spotify allows paying users to download tracks for offline use with the press of a button.

Check Your Destination’s COVID Policies

Make sure you’re aware of your destination’s most up-to-date policies regarding COVID and vaccination status. Check with the State Department website well before your trip to make sure you meet the requirements, and check in periodically to monitor for potentially changes. Similarly to the US, mask-wearing policies may be left up to the discretion of an event or venue, so its a good idea to have a few masks on hand when out and about.

Pack These Essentials

While the contents of your checked bag will largely depend on the climate you’re visiting, you’ll want most of your trip’s essentials on hand in your carry-on. Start with this international travel checklist of items to pack:

A timeline of things to do before traveling

From the moment you decide to embark on travel abroad, it’s time to start planning. In fact, it’s never too early—the sooner you start to tick off items on your before travel checklist, the sooner you can relax and have fun!

3-6 months before departure

First things first: You need to pick a program (if you haven’t already). This first step is the most important, as it will determine how you go about planning in the coming months. There are endless opportunities for meaningful travel abroad, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options, you aren’t alone. But selecting your program is the fun part (think online shopping!), and GoAbroad’s Online Advisor can help.  Submit your application several months in advance—the earlier the better—and once accepted, you can start working on the travel logistics. Do you have a valid passport? If you’re an international travel virgin, you’ll need to apply for one right away. Make sure it’s valid for the dates of your trip. Have you booked flights? Are there visa requirements? Give yourself plenty of time for the paperwork. Does your program have additional requirements? Do you need a TEFL certification? What about CPR? Get crackin’ early so you aren’t pressed for time.

You’ll need to sort out your funding at this stage, too. Start budgeting to save for your trip, or look into scholarships and fundraising to cover what you can’t afford. Travel abroad can put a big dent in your bank account, but as long as you have a game plan, the price will be totally worth it. 

1-3 months before departure

Get a stellar haircut and tie up other loose ends, like doctor’s appointments or visits to the bank.

If you’re planning for an extended time abroad, your international travel checklist should include all of the necessary appointments to make sure you’re in optimum health for travel abroad. Schedule checkups with your dentist, doctor, and any specialists, sort out prescription medication for the length of your trip, and maybe even visit your hair stylist to make sure you’re feeling and looking good before you go! 

Your trip preparation checklist isn’t all tedious paperwork in the first several months. Now is the time to spread the word! Tell your family and friends so they can share the excitement with you, let your school or employer know about your plans so they can prepare for your departure, and connect with in-country staff to get more information about your program. Get inspired: do some research on your destination. Read guide books or novels by local authors. Reading ain’t your thing? Check out a documentary or listen to some music to get in touch with the country’s roots. The more you learn, the more real your trip abroad becomes!

One month before departure

Time is flying by! A month may sound like a long time, but you’ll be on that plane in no time. With your departure date quickly approaching, now is the time to hunker down and think about what still needs to be accomplished on your before travel checklist. No more procrastination!

Before you start on your one-month before travel checklist, make sure you’ve checked off any outstanding paperwork for visas and passports. Are your flights booking, programs confirmed, and budget in place? Once this is out of the way, your international travel checklist will help to finalize the fine details. Confirm your travel itinerary and accommodations with your program and lay the groundwork for any personal travel. If you plan to veer away from the group, think about transportation and hostel arrangements.

Next on the trip preparation checklist: start to tie up the loose ends. Buy the essentials from your packing list and say goodbye to friends, family, and your favorite restaurants. You don’t realize it now, but a Chipotle craving is bound to happen while you’re abroad, so eat that burrito and don’t feel bad about splurging on the extra guac!

Impt item on you before travel checklist: Eat all the guac you can!

Need to brush up on those language skills? Buy a pocket dictionary or download Duolingo for your free time to brush up on key phrases and slang of your destination. You’ll want to pat yourself on the back when you can find your way around or have a short conversation with locals without a translator. 

Speaking of communication, make a plan with family and friends on how to keep in touch while you’re abroad. You won’t want to be tied to your phone or social media, but it’s a good idea to find an outlet to share your travels with those at home. Ever considered blogging?

Start getting EXCITED! This is the time to celebrate and have fun before your big adventure. Don’t forget to throw yourself a going away party, so all your besties can wish you bon voyage! 

One week before

The time has nearly come! At this point, there aren’t too many things to do before traveling. In a perfect world, your before travel checklist should be all checked off. Your passport and visa are ready, itineraries are finalized, necessities have been purchased. If you’ve been on top of your international travel checklist thus far, your last week will be a breeze.

There are just a few things left on your pre-travel checklist during your last week before departure. If you haven’t already, you’ll want to purchase travel insurance . Some programs include this in the program fee, so best to check with them first. If not, get this sorted right away—and no cutting corners with this one! You never know what can happen, and you’ll want the best coverage possible in case of emergency while abroad. 

One of the most important things to do before traveling is packing your bags—smartly. Don’t overdo it!

Don’t forget to contact your bank and let them know you’ll be traveling. You don’t want to run into difficulties with credit or debit cards while you’re overseas. Enquire about travel cards, or think about exchanging currencies so you have cash for your first week or two after arrival.

And last, but not least, pack those bags! Make sure you keep two copies of all travel documents and IDs in your carry-on, along with some clean underwear and a toothbrush. As for the rest, your program should provide you with some must-haves before you set off on your trip abroad.

Stick with clothing that can be layered or hand washed, and leave heavy books, high heels, hair dryers, and random accessories at home. You’ll be able to buy any clothes you need and most toiletries upon arrival, and that extra suitcase room will come in handy later for souvenirs.

Traveling abroad for presentations or research this summer.

The University of Iowa is committed to engaging in research with collaborators from around the globe, working together to foster scholarship, develop new projects and research, and serve the public.   

“At the same time, it is important to safeguard intellectual property and institutional data, and to be aware of sponsor requirements and federal regulations,” said Mike Andrews, director of research integrity and security. “There are several institutional and federal regulations that researchers may not be aware of that are important to consider prior to leaving on a research trip abroad."  

Researchers at the University of Iowa have access to a wide range of resources available to support international collaboration. From travel insurance and laptop rentals, to assistance understanding federal sponsor requirements and export control regulations, UI staff are available to help prior to the initiation of a trip or collaboration.   

The Division of Sponsored Programs hosts an extensive website with resources and applicable policy information.   

 1. Review policies on travel and travel insurance   

Institutional policies  

In order for the institution to be informed of, and support researchers and scholars who are traveling internationally for research and scholarship, travelers must request pre-approval prior to university-sponsored travel. The pre-approval process in ProTrav, which routes to a traveler’s supervisor, ensures that the travel is approved and meets institutional requirements.   

The university provides travel insurance for university-sponsored travel to international locations only if the ProTrav trip request is approved in advance of the departure date. Read more about the UI travel policy.  

Sponsor policies  

In addition to requesting institutional approval, researchers must also request pre-approval from a sponsor if the travel is associated with a sponsored project.  Obtaining institutional approval via ProTrav does not constitute sponsor approval.  Since specific foreign travel approval requirements vary by sponsor, travelers should contact the Division of Sponsored Programs with questions about requesting prior approval.  

2. Disclose working with a foreign entity   

The U.S. government is engaged in a multifaceted effort to raise awareness of the potential for foreign influence on research, intellectual property, and associated technology implementation. To ensure that external activities are conducted in a manner consistent with institutional and public values, policies have been established to ensure that university employees avoid improper conflicts, and otherwise disclose activities for review and management.  

Institutional policies   

The university requires all researchers to disclose activities with foreign governments and institutions of higher education, such as presenting, teaching or conducting research external to university research activities. These disclosures should also include any form of payments, stipends, personal reimbursed travel, honoraria, and remunerations.  

The Conflict of Interest in Research Office can assist with any questions you have about what must be disclosed for research disclosure purposes. Although not exhaustive, a sample list of activities and external interests to disclose is posted on its website.   

Disclosing external research collaborations is also subject to Conflict of Commitment policies . Contact the Office of the Provost for more information on Conflict of Commitment disclosures.   

Activities under all conflict of interest and commitment policies must be disclosed to the institution through the eCOI platform .   

In addition, most federal sponsors require disclosure of other support or related activities with foreign governments and other organizations. For additional information about the information that must be disclosed to federal funding agencies, please review the Division of Sponsored Programs’ website or contact the Division of Sponsored Programs with questions.   

3. Protect university devices and data  

ITS hosts a webpage of best practices and things to consider prior to leaving campus on university-related business with personal or university owned equipment, with detailed checklists of considerations for both hardware and software. An important rule of thumb is to not travel with any devices or data you cannot replace or would not want to lose.  

ITS also offers a laptop rental program for various purposes including travel. Authorized departmental purchasing requestors can reserve equipment online for pickup at the ITS offices in 2800 University Capitol Centre during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8-5 p.m.). 4. Consider export controls    

Export control regulations may apply to several aspects of international travel. Questions to consider prior to travel are:  

Destination: Are you traveling to a sanctioned country?  

People, institutions, and businesses you will interact with: Are they listed on a U.S. Government restricted list? The regulations prohibit engaging in transactions or providing services to entities and individuals who appear on U.S. Government restricted lists.  

Items you are carrying, both as part of your luggage or to share with a collaborator: Is it restricted for your destination or is a license required?  

Information/Technical Data on your devices: Is it export controlled?
