The 7 Best Beaches in Roatan Honduras for Cruisers

' src=

Roatan Honduras is a super underrated cruise port and vacation destination in the Caribbean. There are many great things to do, including visiting the amazing beaches. Some of the best beaches in Roatan are Half Moon Bay, West Bay Beach, and Mahogany Bay.

I’ve visited Roatan on a cruise two times in the past two years. I’ve also visited a handful of times around 10 years ago. Each time I visit, I make sure to get some beach time in.

The beaches in Roatan have fine, white sand, that is comfortable to walk around in bare feet. The water is crystal clear, warm, and safe for swimming. Also, there is amazing snorkeling off of Roatan’s beaches.

I have a few favorite beaches in Roatan, listed below. I also reached out to travel blogger friends to have been to Roatan for their recommendations.

Keep reading for a list of the best beaches in Roatan and the pros/cons of each one.

Best Beaches in Roatan Honduras

Below are the best Roatan Honduras beaches for cruise visitors and vacationers. They are in no particular order and I include the distance from the port, what to expect, and the pros/cons for each beach.

At the end of this post, I share the winners for the best beach for snorkeling, a hidden gem, and my top pick.

1. Half Moon Bay

Scenic view of Half Moon Bay in Roatan, Honduras, featuring a tranquil beach with powdery sand, swaying palm trees, a colorful lifeguard stand, and a clear blue sky, with boats moored by a distant pier.

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 35 minute drive

Recommended by : Tasha Amy from Backpackers Wanderlust

No doubt you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches in Roatan. However, my personal favorite no doubt is Half Moon Bay.

Located on the West End part of the island is the perfect slice of paradise for holiday goers. Not only will you be surrounded by an beaches with plenty of swimming and snorkeling opportunities, you will also be near to some incredible hotels (including some affordable options), restaurants, and cafes providing you with everything you could need!

Head to the rocky cliffs on each side of Half Moon Bay for a spot of snorkeling or just hang in the middle for beautiful stretches of sand enjoying the waters.

There are also plenty of diving schools around if you are keen to get certified, or perhaps already are and want to do some fun dives. No doubt learning to scuba dive is one of the best things to do here .

A visit to Half Moon Bay in Roatan is a must for your time in Honduras. Whether you decide to simply spend a couple of hours here or stay in one of the nearby accommodation providers you wont be disappointed.

👍 Pros : Good snorkeling and nearby hotels if you are visiting not on a cruise

✖️ Considerations : Can become crowded from nearby hotel guests

2. Mahogany Bay

Vibrant view of Mahogany Beach in Roatan, showcasing people enjoying the calm turquoise waters, sandy shorelines, and recreational activities, set against a backdrop of lush tropical foliage and the expansive Caribbean Sea.

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 10 minute walk

Recommended by : Karen from Forever Karen

Mahogany Beach provides a great beach day for guests on a Western Caribbean cruise. Unlike West Bay Beach, this one is manufactured and purpose-built for passengers stopping at the  Mahogany Bay cruise port  in Dixon Cove.

You can either choose to walk or take the Magical Flying Beach Chair (repurposed ski lift) to reach this venue. The sandy beach features washrooms, bars, restaurants, complimentary loungers, and inexpensive Wi-Fi.

It’s the ideal destination for families with a sheltered cove and a lifeguard. If you’re into watersports, you can rent snorkel gear, aqua cycles, and paddle boards. Alternatively, you can purchase excursions for scuba diving, ATVing, or fishing.

Adventure seekers can opt to reach the beach by zip line. Outside the cruise center, Xplore Roatan offers a six-line package with guests flying through the rainforest and over ravines. The highlight of the ride is the 1600-foot drop on the last line, which ends at Mahogany Beach.

While Mahogany Beach allows cruise guests to go from ship to sand in under ten minutes, the beach can get crowded when multiple ships are in port.

👍 Pros : Close to the cruise port, don’t need to take a taxi

✖️ Considerations : Can become crowded when multiple ships are in port

3. West Bay Beach

West Bay Beach in Roatan lined with sun loungers under blue umbrellas, with visitors relaxing under the shade of tall coconut palms by the water's edge, as others wade into the inviting, clear Caribbean Sea.

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 40 minute drive

Recommended by : Eleanor of Elevate Your Escapes

West Bay Beach in Roatán is a stunning place to visit and a must-do while visiting. It’s a popular destination for both locals, land visitors, and  cruise ship passengers,  as it’s close to the port.

The beach consists of gorgeous powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. You can swim top snorkel and see the vibrant coral reefs just off the shore.

The water is very calm and the front part of the beach is shallow, so it’s an ideal spot for a relaxing day. I loved both snorkeling and just sitting in the water.

West Bay Beach has a variety of beachfront bars and restaurants. Some offer music, which adds to the energy. You can also find shops and vendors selling crafts and souvenirs along the beach.

This beach is so great that it often gets a bit crowded. I prefer more secluded beaches, so I didn’t appreciate the afternoon peak time.

It’s even worse in the high season for visitors. It’s best to arrive early to secure an ideal spot on the sand.

👍 Pros : Many beachfront bars and restaurants

✖️ Considerations : Crowded, especially in the afternoon

4. Tabyana Beach

Row of empty white lounge chairs on the sandy beach of Tabyana Beach Club, Roatan, under a sky streaked with clouds, with tall palm trees swaying gently in the background and a glimpse of the serene sea beyond

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 50 minute drive

Recommended by : Me!

Tabyana Beach is technically a beach club which is part of West Bay, not it’s own beach. However, it’s my personal favorite beach to visit on the island.

The main reason I enjoy Tabyana beach is that the West Bay area of Roatan is super nice. The beach is clean, the sand is soft, and the water is great for swimming.

Tabyana also has amazing snorkeling! In fact, the last time I visited, I chatted with a couple from the East Coast US that travels to Roatan each year for the sole purpose of snorkeling at Tabyana.

I prefer Tabyana specifically because I prefer to have a beach chair and umbrella, easy to access restrooms, and nearby bar and restaurant.

👍 Pros : Beach chairs, bar, restaurant, and restrooms on site. Great snorkeling!

✖️ Considerations : Have to pay an entrance fee + additional charges for chairs, food, drinks, etc.

5. Camp Bay Beach

A solitary figure walking along the pristine shoreline of Camp Bay Beach, Roatan, with the clear turquoise Caribbean Sea on one side and a line of lush vegetation on the other, under a bright tropical sun.

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 1 hour drive

Recommended by : Madison from Madison’s Footsteps

There are countless exciting things to do in Roatan , but visiting the best beaches on the island is a must-do on any Roatan itinerary.

Many tourists, especially the ones that arrive by cruise ship, spend all of their time on the island’s most popular beaches – West Bay Beach and West End Beach.

Don’t get me wrong, these beaches are beautiful, but don’t underestimate the allure of Roatan’s less popular beaches, like Camp Bay.

Camp Bay Beach is a hidden oasis on the east side of the island, past iconic Roatan spots like Kristi’s Overlook and Punta Gorda. The wind is stronger on this side, so it’s the best spot on the island for kitesurfing.

It’s common to see scuba divers over here as well, although the current makes it trickier to dive here vs. the calmer sites in West End and West Bay.

With the exception of La Sirenas de Camp Bay beach bar and the Camp Bay Lodge, Camp Bay Beach is very secluded. I recommend filling a cooler with snacks and Salva Vida, packing your speaker (a great addition to your packing list for Roatan ), and heading down here with a good book and a couple of friends to enjoy the sun and solitude of Roatan’s East End!

👍 Pros : Less crowded, great for windsurfing

✖️ Considerations : Windier side of the island

6. Maya Key

Clear day at Maya Key private island off Roatan, with visitors enjoying the calm turquoise waters near a wooden pier, a single palm tree adding tropical charm to the sun-kissed sandy beach

🚢 Distance from the Cruise Port : 15 minute drive + water taxi

Recommended by : Lisa from Planning Away

Maya Key is one of the best beaches on Roatan. It is a key island off of the island of Roatan.  You will need to take a water taxi to reach Maya Key.

Maya Key  is a private island retreat that offers a little more than just a beach. But since we are talking about the best beaches let’s start there.

This private beach has everything you need, enough sand for sand castles, and a perfect slope to enter gradually into the ocean.  There are plenty of beach chairs included in your admission to Maya Key.  There are also fun water toys in the ocean to climb on.

The best part of Maya Key beach is what is under the water.  Honduras is known to have the best snorkeling in all of the Caribbean . This is a magical underwater paradise you have to experience.

Maya Key has direct access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.  You do not even have to take a boat. You walk directly onto a boardwalk, step down and start exploring.

Bringing your own snorkel gear is recommended but no big if you do not have any. You can rent some onsite.

Maya Key also offers animal encounters, a resort pool, and even a replica of Copan Mayan ruins.  Maya Key is definitely an all-inclusive private beach worth visiting!

👍 Pros : Private, amazing snorkeling

✖️ Considerations : Need to take a water taxi to get there

7. Playa West End

Overhead view of the sandy shores and crystal-clear waters of Roatan's Playa west end beach with a wooden pier jutting out, showcasing the serene beaches typical of the island, framed by verdant palm trees

Recommended by : Sally from Sally Sees

Playa West End is a small beach in the heart of West End town .

It’s a narrow strip of sand, lined with a grove of palm trees, and calm, shallow waters. We loved lazing in the shade of the palm trees and being able to see the sunset from the beach each night.

Playa West End is not one of the typical ‘best beaches’ in Roatan. However, it was one of our favourite beaches on the island for a number of reasons!

First, it was quiet! There are some beautiful stretches of sand in Roatan, but many of them are always crowded. Most popular beaches are lined with restaurants, bars, lounges for rent and hordes of cruise ship passengers each day.

On Playa West End, we hardly ever had to share the beach with anyone.

Secondly, the location is great and super central to everything in West End, if you just want to pop to the beach without planning a day trip.

It was right near where we were staying, and within a few minutes’ walk, we were enjoying a morning coffee or sunset beer on the sand without needing to drive or take a water taxi.

The beach itself doesn’t have any amenities. There aren’t any bathrooms, no lounge rental and no restaurants right on the beach.

But you’re in such a great location you have easy access to all these things along West End Road right behind the beach.

There are some fantastic restaurants nearby, so you can easily grab a meal or snack take away (we loved Creole’s Rotisserie Chicken!).

👍 Pros : Private, quiet, and not crowded

✖️ Considerations : No amenities (although there are restaurants nearby)

Tips for getting around roatan.

The best way to get around Roatan is by taxi. They are easy to find, safe, and reliable. Before you begin a trip, be sure to agree on a fare or ensure the meter is running.

Getting a Taxi from the Roatan Port

From the cruise terminal, walk through the port area towards the exit. There are clear signs pointing where to go.

Once you leave the fenced port area, you will be bombarded by tour guides and taxi drivers. It can be extremely overwhelming and the people can feel very pushy.

However, everyone is very nice and wants to be helpful. Take a deep breath, then find someone with a taxi badge around their neck and let them know what beach you plan to visit.

They will provide a per-person price for the ride to the beach, usually around $10 (this varies by beach). You can try to haggle, but they are often very firm in the price.

If you enjoy your driver on the way to the beach, you can coordinate a time for them to return and pick you back up later in the day.

Renting a Car in Roatan

If you are visiting for more than one day, you can choose to rent a car. However, drivers in Roatan are very aggressive and I would not personally feel safe driving. If you decide to drive, keep an eye out for oncoming traffic passing in your lane.

Beach Bag Packing List

  • Packable Beach Bag – I love how this bag folds up super small to fit in my luggage. Also, the holes keep it from filling up with sand that inevitably gets everywhere.
  • Towel Clips – One of my biggest pet peeves is my towel blowing away or falling down on my lounge chair. These towel clips solve that problem so easily! Plus, they’re a great thing to pack for on board the cruise ship too.
  • Waterproof Phone Case – This phone case is super helpful if you want to take photos in the water.
  • Snorkel Gear (optional) – Most beaches have snorkel equipment you can rent. However, if you prefer your own I recommend bringing it. Roatan is on the Mesoamerican reef and has excellent snorkeling.

Summary of the Best Beaches in Roatan Honduras

Best for Snorkeling : Maya Key

Top Hidden Gem : Playa West End

Easiest to Get to from the Port : Mahogany Bay Beach

My #1 Top Choice : Tabyana Beach

Besides visiting one of the amazing beaches, there are many other great things to do in Roatan . You can take an ATV tour, try local-made chocolate, or visit a wildlife sanctuary. Read my one day Roatan itinerary !

23 Best Things to Do in Roatán on a Cruise [Port Guide]

Roatan cruise port guide

Sharing is caring!

If you’re visiting Roatán on a cruise, you’re in luck! Roatán is a favorite Western Caribbean cruise port for many cruise travelers. This small island off the coast of Honduras has stunning beaches and is packed with opportunities for adventure.

In this post, I’ll share the best things to do in Roatán on a cruise, including shore excursions as well as inexpensive or free activities. You’ll also learn everything you need to know about visiting the Roatán cruise port for the day and get answers to commonly asked questions.

Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

Things to Do in Roatan Cruise Port

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

How To Keep Safe On The Beaches In Roatán

Roatán, Honduras, is a beautiful island known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. However, to ensure your stay on the island is memorable, it’s vital to remember safety. Here are a few tips on staying safe while on the beach:

Swim at designated swimming areas: Many beaches in Roatán have designated swimming areas with lifeguards on duty. It is essential to swim only in these areas to ensure your safety.

Be aware of strong currents: Some beaches in Roatán may have strong currents that can be dangerous for swimmers. It can be easy to be immersed in the beauty of the coral reefs and colorful fish, and you lose track of how far you are from the shore. Beaches with strong currents include Sandy Bay Beach, Camp Bay Beach, and Paya Bay Beach.

Be careful of marine life: Always wear water shoes or fins when swimming to avoid getting stung by sea urchins. During jellyfish season, wearing protective clothing is advisable.

Use reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin from sunburn by applying sunscreen suitable for swimming in coral reefs. Sunscreen is necessary if you plan on spending a lot of time on the beach without the protection of an umbrella or cabana.

Keep an eye on your belongings: While Roatán is generally safe, it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry and keep an eye on your belongings at the beach to avoid theft.

Roatan Cruise Port at Coxen Hole: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The Roatan cruise port at Coxen Hole is small in size but growing in popularity with western Caribbean cruises. It is one of two ports on the island.

Coxen Hole is the capital of the Bay Island and the largest city with a population of about 5,000 people.

Cruise visitors will disembark at what locals call Port of Roatan , which has a small but attractive cruise terminal. The “Town Center” has retail shops, restaurants and of course the starting point for excursions around the island. The port can accommodate one ship at the docks. If any others arrive at the same time, they have to anchor offshore and “tender” their passengers onto the island (transfer them via small boats).

Roatan gets plenty of attention on travel and real estate cable channels in part because it is such an inviting island. It is inviting because of long white sand beaches and great snorkeling and diving spots. It also is a convenient cruise destination; cruises also often visit the nearby port of Belize City.

Besides Coxen Hole, the other cruise port on Roatan is Mahogany Bay . Anyone traveling with Carnival Cruise Lines and related brands will land there instead. It’s a Carnival-built complex on 20 acres to the west of Coxen Hole.

It opened in 2009 as part of a trend among cruise lines to build private, commerce-oriented docking facilities.

Quick Travel Tips

Where is coxen hole and roatan.

Coxen Hole on the southwest side of Roatan is only 137 miles southwest of Belize City , which makes it an easy island to reach in combination with the Belize port. Its small size makes the visit a quick one too because of the lack of major attractions other than the beaches.

Attractions and Shore Excursions

With a small population of about 5,000 people, Coxen Hole has few cultural or historical attractions. It also has a smaller number of restaurants and duty-free shops for visitors compared to larger ports in the Caribbean.

Roatan Marine Park is a protected area of western Roatan between West Bay and Sandy Bay. It has many of the most popular diving and snorkeling spots and also some of the most popular beaches.

Gumbalimba Park is an animal preserve with parrots, monkeys, iguanas and turkeys, among other creatures.

It also has botanical gardens, a beach for swimming and other recreational activities. Activities include kayaking, snuba and scuba diving, a zipline canopy tour and the Jolly Roger Sail.

Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails is across the road from Anthony’s Key Resort on the north side of Roatan. It has 40 acres of land for hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic tours. Garden hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Roatan Institute of Marine Science at Anthony’s Key Resort is a marine research and educational facility. Visitors can swim, snorkel or dive with dolphins.

Because local residents eat iguanas, a resident created The Iguana Farm to protect and breed the dwindling population. The farm has several thousand iguanas on the property. The best time to see the iguanas is early afternoon at feeding time. The farm is in French Key, just past French Harbour, which is about seven miles northeast of the cruise port.

South Shore Canopy is a popular zipline facility with visitors. This shore excursion has prices starting at about $50. It is nine miles southwest of Coxen Hole and near West End.

Adventurous visitors can dive as much as 2,000 feet on the Idabel, which is called the world’s deepest passenger submarine, and view marine life through a Plexiglas bubble. The tour is chartered and can carry two passengers and a pilot at any one time. It is at the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration.

The Butterfly Garden is a five-minute walk from the main entrance of West End Village. Other than butterflies, the garden has tropical plants and trees, many hummingbirds, and a small collection of parrots, macaws, and toucans that have been acquired as rescue birds.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

Coxen hole cruise port map.

Anyone not interested in snorkeling or diving may want to spend the day at the island’s famous beaches .

West Bay Beach on the southwestern tip of the island is the most famous and most popular because of its extensive white sands, resorts, restaurants and other facilities. Most cruise excursions go to a section called Tabyana Beach.

It is about a 15-minute drive from Coxen Hole, so cruise visitors need a taxi, bus, rental car or excursion bus to get there.

A five-hour shore excursion to the Sandy Bay beach will cost about $40. It’s less than 20 minutes from the port.

West End Beach is the closest beach to the Coxen Hole cruise port. Water taxis connect West End Beach with West End Village, which has an active nightlife, for about $2.60 U.S. at the time of this writing. It also is about 10 minutes by car.

Half Moon Bay is another popular beach. It’s a 20-minute drive from the cruise port.

Shopping / Restaurants

Roatan does not receive as many western Caribbean cruise visitors as Grand Cayman or Cozumel. As a result, the shopping opportunities are more limited.

Coxen Hole has an open air market, shopping plaza and supermarkets. West Bay Beach has stalls featuring local artists and retailers.

Roatan has more than 100 restaurants. They are concentrated around Coxen Hole, Mahogany Bay, West End Village, West End Beach and other popular tourist areas.

Restaurants around Coxen Hole include Frenchy’s 44, Bojangles, Haydee’s Diner, Nardo’s Bar and Grill, and Wood’s Place.

Local cuisine includes baleadas, pastilles, conch and other seafood specialities. Other local favorites include Honduran coffee, fresh local fruit smoothies and local gelato flavours.

Getting Around / Transportation

Roatan is only about 2.5 miles wide at its widest point but 40 miles long. So adventurous people with plenty of time will want to take advantage of available transportation options.

Many of the car rental agencies are located at the airport. None are located at the docks at the time of this writing, but many of them do provide pickup at both docks.

Taxi rates are fairly low. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End is about $2.20 U.S., according to Tourism Roatan. The rate from Coxen Hole to West End Beach is about $7.10.

It is important to note that rates are not fixed by a government agency or taxi association, so ask for the rates before getting into the taxi. Taxis sitting right by the docks are more likely to charge higher rates.

Two bus routes originate in Coxen Hole and go to the various popular points on the island including West End Bay. They cost about $2.60 one way to West End and Sandy Bay for a 10-minute ride.

Weather / Best Times to Go

The official dry season in Roatan runs from April through late July with an average high temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 degrees Celsius.

A rainy season tends to hit the island from late July to early September The peak rainy season goes from mid-January to the end of February.

As a result, western Caribbean cruises that visit the island are often quite popular during the spring and early summer.

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

11 Best Roatan Beaches

West Bay Beach in Roatan, Honduras.

There is a reason that there are two gigantic cruise ports on the island of Roatan. The island is world famous for its scuba diving and snorkeling. Of course, being immediately next to the second biggest reef on earth will help do that.

What the island of Roatan doesn’t have is a ton of sandy shores. What many people don’t realize is that Roatan does still have some beautiful sandy beaches you can lounge on, you just have to know where to go!

While cruises can be fun, I recommend an extended stay on Roatan. There are flights directly into the island and compared to a lot of other Caribbean destinations the costs are MUCH cheaper.

To help you find the best beach Roatan offers I’ve highlighted some of the contenders below! Looking for a particular beach? Check out the table of contents below skip to that section.

11. Marbella Beach

Top 10 roatan beaches.

I included a lot of the Roatan beaches that you will hear about, even though a couple of them are technically on different islands and not actually part of Roatan. Also, there are some that are currently closed to the public.

1. West Bay Beach Roatan (Best Beach in Roatan)

West Bay Beach is in the West Bay neighborhood on the western side of the island of Roatan (also in the Western Hemisphere because I was looking for an excuse to say west again).

This beach is probably the most popular of all the Roatan beaches. In my opinion, it is the best beach in Roatan.

This is where the majority of hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and other attractions are. You can find budget accommodations and glitzy resorts. All of them are trying to locate close to the pristine sands of this beach.

While it can get crowded it is big enough to almost never feel crowded. It also helps that the cruise passengers generally do not make it here as each of the ports are about 25 minutes away.

This beach is an excellent launching point for views of the gigantic Mesoamerican coral reef. You can also find all of the other fun beach activities like parasailing, massages, and paddle boarding.

Best West Bay Beach Excursions

Here are a few of the best excursions you can do at West Bay Beach.

  • Discover Private Scuba Diving in West Bay Beach – This is a great option for those who are not Scuba certified yet. You will have the help of a PADI-certified diving instructor. With this Discover Scuba Diving program, you can try scuba diving without having to commit to a full certification course.
  • Mayan Jungle Canopy Zipline – Go Ziplining through the mountain jungle canopy. Includes 13 Zips with 2 Suspension Bridges! Check out this page for more details.
  • Parasailing + West Bay Beach Break – Go parasailing over West Bay Beach!

2. Mahogany Bay (Beach near Roatan Cruise Port)

Note: Mahogany Bay is only open to cruise passengers.

Carnival Cruise lines knew what they were doing with this beach. This beach was actually built by the cruise line to be immediately next to the gigantic port that accommodates cruise ships.

To help transfer visitors directly to the sand they even constructed a ski resort style chair lift for those that don’t want to walk the 10 minutes to the beach!

It is an all around great beach with tons of restaurants, bars, and water activities available, BUT it is only open to cruise passengers. Read our full blog post on Mahogany Bay here.

3. Camp Bay Beach

Camp Bay Roatan is the best beach that isn’t packed with tourists. People talk about this being “far away” and off the grid beach of Roatan. It is located on the eastern side of the island that is not developed with significant tourism infrastructure. Camp Bay Roatan is a small neighborhood with a few local residents.

It takes about an hour to drive to Camp Bay Beach from the airport, and about an hour and a half from the western end of the island.

While the beach is very sparse on amenities and the waves are a little bit choppier, there is no better place on the island to enjoy wide sandy shores with very few people. Read our full blog post on Camp Bay here.

Camp Bay Beach in Roatan Honduras

4. Beach Club Roatan (aka Havana Beach)

There is an actual beach named “Beach Club Roatan”, though the actual name might be Havana Beach (I could never confirm).

The Roatan Beach Club is located on the eastern (less visited) side of the island. It is most often visited by cruise passengers on their day excursions, but you can purchase a day pass for $10 if you like.

At the Roatan Beach Club they offer jet skiing, horseback riding, snorkeling, and other water sports. There are third party tour providers that will pick you up and drop you off as well.

The beach isn’t huge, but it never gets crowded.

5. Little French Key Roatan (actually a private island)

This beach is actually on its own private island. To get there, you purchase an excursion day pass, or book a night at the resort. It is supposedly an AMAZING all encompassing experience.

The boat ride there from the main island only takes 10 minutes. The on island experience can be adventurous or luxurious. This is one of the few resorts with a spa for massages and manicures.

There are jet skis, horseback riding, and of course snorkeling and scuba diving options available.

6. Sandy Bay Beach

This calm beach is close to the main tourist areas on the west side of the island of Roatan. It is in a quiet locals neighborhood, but the biggest drawback is that currently the beach looks like it is lined with dirt more than sand.

This beach is great for kayaking, horseback riding , and other water sports though.

Sandy Bay Beach Roatan

7. Half Moon Bay Beach

This is the main beach in the West End neighborhood , which is the second busiest tourist area on the island.

While the beach isn’t huge, if you are looking for a nice beach with restaurants and bars in the area, then this is one you have to consider.

This kayak and snorkeling excursion starts at Half Moon Bay and it is one of the best!

Kayaking in Roatan Honduras

8. Maya Key Roatan (actually a private island)

Maya Key is another private island that is perfect for an excursion. They offer snorkeling, exotic animals, a swimming pool, and a private beach. The boat ride from the mainland is only 5 minutes, and the immediate access to gorgeous coral reefs can’t be beat.

I love anywhere that lets me hang out with capuchin monkeys! My other favorite spot to see them on the main island is the Gumbalimba Park .

Read our full blog post on visiting Gumbalimba Park here.

9. Pangea Beach

Pangea Beach is another out of the way beach that you are very likely to have to yourself, or be sharing with only a couple locals.

It is on the northeastern side of the island which is not as nearly developed as the west.

The area is being built up and lots on the limited stretch of sand are being sold to build new houses/condos on. There are no facilities, but it is currently a good way to get away from the crowds.

10. Paya Bay Roatan

Paya Bay is actually a resort with a private beach. It is located on the east side of the island about 1 hour from the airport, but pretty close to Camp Bay Beach . The beach is small, but if you are looking for a small boutique resort this could be a great escape.

Warning, supposedly there are nudist days at the Paya Bay resort so be careful when you book. If you don’t want to stay at the resort you can go just for lunch.

Paya Bay Roatan Honduras

This beach is currently closed off to the public. When it was open, the road required a 4×4 to get there, but with it being blocked off and there now being “No Trespassing” signs it makes sense to just avoid this northwest shore beach. Read more about Marbella Beach here.

Conclusion: Which Beach is the Best Beach in Roatan ?

The best beach Roatan offers depends on what you are looking for.

The most popular all around beach is definitely the West Bay Beach, but I think my favorite beach even though it is a bit out of the way is the Camp Bay Beach since it is usually not crowded at all!
