“The time is right to get back on stage”: Power Trip announce first headline shows since death of Riley Gale

The reunited thrashers, now fronted by Seth Gilmore, will follow their comeback at this summer’s No Values festival with headline dates in Dallas and New York

Power Trip in 2024

Power Trip have announced their first headline shows since the passing of vocalist Riley Gale in 2020.

The Dallas-Fort Worth thrash metal band will be fronted by Seth Gilmore, a longtime friend and the singer of fellow Texans Fugitive.

The five-piece – completed by guitarists Blake Ibanez and Nick Stewart, bassist Chris Whetzel and drummer Chris Ulsh – say in a new statement: “Nearly four years ago to the day, unbeknownst to us, we would perform for the last time as Power Trip.

“It has been a difficult road since then, marked by deep pain, grief, and everything else that came with losing our brother Riley.

“We know this can’t be undone, and it will always remain part of us. We have thought deeply about the future of Power Trip and what always comes back to us is that this band was founded on resilience, perseverance, and most importantly: a love for the music and for all of the people it has brought us closer to along the way.

“We’ll never have the words to convey our appreciation of the enduring support we’ve received over the years, and we feel as though the time is right to get back on stage for all of you who’ve been there throughout our existence as a band.”

After forming in 2008 and releasing two lauded albums, 2013’s Manifest Decimation and 2017’s Nightmare Logic , Power Trip entered a period of inactivity due to the death of Gale on August 24, 2020, aged 34.

The band later unofficially reunited as “special guests” at a Fugitive concert in December 2023, with Gilmore fronting them.

The return, with Gilmore still up front, was made official on February 20, when Power Trip were booked to perform at the California punk festival No Values in June 2024.

The band’s twin headline shows will follow the No Values event. They will take place in Dallas, Texas, on July 6 and in New York City on August 24. The full list of dates is below and tickets will be available on March 1 at 11am eastern time.

Tickets to No Values are on sale now.

Power Trip, the newest music festival coming in October to the home of Coachella and Stagecoach, could have been named the Headbangers Ball.

But its name harkens back to the Desert Trip festival , which in October 2016 featured the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and other rock legends over two weekends.

This new festival, to be held Oct. 6-8 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, is meant to deliver a heavier dose of rock with its lineup of Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden on Friday (Oct. 6), AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne on Saturday (Oct. 7), and Metallica and Tool on Sunday (Oct. 8).

You can register on the festival website  for access to tickets, which go on sale April 6 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. General admission tickets for the three-day fest start at $599 plus fees. Hotel packages (with two tickets, starting at about $3,200) and VIP packages (starting at $1,599) will go on sale April 4 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT.

Power Trip would mark returns of Ozzy Osbourne, Brian Johnson

The festival marks the return of AC/DC with frontman Brian Johnson , who had to leave the band's tour in 2016 because of hearing loss. Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose filled in on the rest of the band's dates.

Johnson rejoined the band for its 2020 album, "Power Up," with the help of some special hearing aid technology. He also performed at the Sept. 3, 2022 tribute concert for Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins .

Ozzy Osbourne's inclusion on the bill is a bit of a surprise because earlier this year he canceled tour dates  in the U.K. and continental Europe saying spine damage he suffered in an accident four years ago prevented him from touring. The former Black Sabbath singer announced in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a nervous system disorder that affects movement.

Metallica begins a world tour on April 27 in Amsterdam and has a new album "72 Seasons" due out April 14. Guns N' Roses' summer-long tour begins June 1 and includes a June 30 date at the British Summer Time Festival at Hyde Park in London. Iron Maiden restarts its Future Past Tour in May in Slovenia. Tool has announced appearances at several festivals including the Rockville Festival at Daytona Beach, Florida (May 21).

Good show! Up tempo throughout as a thrash show should be, not a lotta gab between songs. The people who came to get rowdy in the pit I think walked away satisfied. Look forward to another album and another show.

Paired up w/Sheer Mag, they also put on a good show. Though not the same style of music, they represented well.

Bad as fuck in S.F.! I have been waiting since the last time I saw them. As always, exciting and full of energy not seen very much nowadays. I will go see them every time they are in San Francisco. Instant classic band. Shred on, Riley and company! Power Trip- welcome to the pantheon and don't look back!

Fucking bad ass show opening in S.F.! 2018 summer tour. Great promotion- like 6 months. Blew it away with their instant classic "Executioner's Tax". Not neu metal, instant classic thrash! You are a bottle munch if you miss them. Obviously, the people's choice of 2017-2018....

I’ve seen them twice in NY and once in Austin. Absolutely nuts. Insane energy from the crowd and band every time. Can feel it instantly. Long live trash.

This is a do-not-miss show. I’ve felt bad for every band that went on after them.

Power Trip Officially Return With Summer Shows: ‘The Time Is Right to Get Back On Stage’

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The surviving members of Power Trip have revealed their surprise reunion in December — the Dallas thrash group’s first gig together since the death of singer Riley Gale in 2020 — was not a one-off as the band has scheduled three more shows this summer.

Following their unannounced five-song reunion in Austin in December, Power Trip — guitarist Blake Ibanez, guitarist Nick Stewart, bassist Chris Whetzel, and drummer Chris Ulsh, along with Fugitive singer Seth Gilmore, who handled lead vocals at that Austin gig — have booked shows at Pomona, California’s No Values Fest on June 8, Dallas’ the Factory on July 6, and New York’s Knockdown Center on Aug. 24.

Power Trip continued, “We’ll never have the words to convey our appreciation of the enduring support we’ve received over the years, and we feel as though the time is right to get back on stage for all of you who’ve been there throughout our existence as a band.”

Following Gale’s August 2020 death from an accidental overdose from the toxic effects of fentanyl, Power Trip went on hiatus and moved on to other projects, but the surviving members did not rule out a reunion someday. “We do want to continue to play music together; we just are not sure what that looks like at this time,” Ibanez  told the  Los Angeles Times in March 2021, shortly after the group was nominated for a Best Metal Performance Grammy Award for their live rendition of “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe).”

Power Trip announce headlining shows in Dallas and NYC

Grammy-nominated crossover thrash band Power Trip will have a pair of headlining shows this summer.

Announced today , the band will perform at The Factory in Deep Ellum in Dallas on July 6 and Knockdown Center in NYC on August 24. These shows follow their previously announced performance at Pomona’s No Values Festival in June. For these shows, Skourge/Fugitive singer Seth Gilmore will take over the role of vocalist.

These will be the first major shows for Power Trip since the passing of founding vocalist Riley Gale in 2020. Each headlining show will feature a handful of special opening acts. More information will be revealed soon.

Power Trip said this about continuing their work with Gilmore, who joined the band for a surprise set late last year:

“It feels right playing our songs with Seth, who’s been a long time figure in Texas hardcore, and we’ve had the pleasure of watching and playing alongside his bands since the origins of Power Trip. We’re grateful for his dedication to this project and can’t wait to see everyone.”

Gilmore also said:

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to contribute to the legacy of Power Trip and deliver these songs to the fans of past and current generations. I would not be who I am today without the massive influence that both the band and its members have had on my life, and I look forward to celebrating their work alongside them while giving it my all to honor the spirit of Riley’s memory.”

Tickets for Power Trip’s headlining shows in Dallas and NYC go on sale to the general public this Friday (March 1) at 11 a.m. EST here .

Power Trip: Special guests, songs and more we're hoping to experience at the festival

Metallica will perform during the Power Trip festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif., on Oct. 6-8, 2023.

Even though its announcement got mixed reception locally, the upcoming Power Trip music festival at the Empire Polo Club is groundbreaking for the Coachella Valley, which has hosted very few heavy metal concerts.

Similar to the 2016 one-off festival Desert Trip featuring classic rock legends Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones , Neil Young , Paul McCartney , The Who and Roger Waters , Los Angeles promoter Goldenvoice is going back to the same two-bands-per-night format for Power Trip, which runs Oct. 6 through 8 at the same Indio venue. The lineup features the most iconic groups in the genre: Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Tool and Metallica.

Former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne was scheduled to perform at the festival, but pulled out in July due to ongoing health issues . He was replaced by English heavy metal band Judas Priest.

Osbourne's absence will be impossible to ignore, and it's expected that at least one or two of the bands performing at the festival will pay tribute to the "Prince of Darkness," especially because Metallica toured with Osbourne during the band's early years and Judas Priest has shared the stage with him on numerous occasions. During a 2019 interview, Maynard James Keenan of Tool referred to Osbourne and Black Sabbath as his earliest musical influences .

All of the performances will be entertaining and impressive, to say the least. Each band features high-level production value during every tour in the form of stunning visuals, themed stage setups, and an overabundance of pyrotechnics and on-stage explosions. Combine all of that with the vigor, mischievousness, spirit and angst of heavy metal, each band's live show is certain to be an unforgettable experience.

Here is what we are hoping to hear — and see — from each band.

Iron Maiden

As someone who has never seen Iron Maiden, I'm excited to see what the British heavy metal icons will bring to the festival. The band's last performance was in August at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany as part of "The Future Past" tour and featured many classics such as "Stranger In A Strange Land," "The Prisoner," "Can I Play With Madness" and of course "The Trooper," which no Maiden performance can exclude.

The band dusted off some classics from the 1986 album "Somewhere Back In Time" and opened each show with "Caught Somewhere in Time," which hadn't been played since 1987. Fans also got the first live performances of "Alexander the Great."

With three shows in Canada in September and October before the final tour date at Power Trip, I'm hoping lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the rest of the band will treat the Power Trip to more rarely played songs such as "Powerslave" and "Sea of Madness."

—Brian Blueskye

It's been said that the members of Iron Maiden are the undisputed kings of Big Metal Shows with their stage setup and pyrotechnics, and that it's "a religious experience." So, I'm looking forward to seeing what exactly that entails.

Most longtime fans of the genre know that Iron Maiden shows are iconic. They've been the stuff of legend for decades. One has to wonder if playing at a festival like Power Trip only ups the ante, so to speak, on what Iron Maiden does to further that legend at a one-of-a-kind show that should be remembered for a long, long time by those who attend.

—Andrew John

Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses already has something special to offer locals who watch the band at Power Trip — the energetic live performance its members are known for.

The last time Guns N' Roses performed in the area — when the group headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2016 — it was a special occasion for the reunited lineup featuring frontman Axl Rose with guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan . But there was a problem. No, the band didn't pull any of its infamous antics of the past such as showing up late or calling the show early, but Rose had to perform the two-and-a-half-hour set both weekends with a broken foot sitting in a throne loaned to him by Dave Grohl.

Since then, the original members have been making up two decades apart and continued to tour arenas and stadiums around the globe. It's hard to say when fans will see a new album, but the Guns have released three new singles since 2021.

Guns N' Roses' 25-30 song recent setlists feature many of the known hits from "Appetite For Destruction," "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II." McKagan is also known to perform lead vocals on selections from the 1993 covers album "The Spaghetti Incident?" such as The Misfits' "Attitude," The Damned's "New Rose" or UK Subs' "Down on the Farm." An intriguing addition since 2017 is the Glen Campbell tune "Wichita Lineman."

I don't expect anything less than Guns N' Roses bringing an ear-splitting, high-powered good time, but why not invite metal god and Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig for "Attitude" or do something crazy like bring out Bob Dylan for that cover of "Knockin' On Heavens Door?"

Judas Priest

Judas Priest celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022 with a large world tour, and the group hasn't performed since last December, but when you're asked to replace Ozzy Osbourne, you don't say no. It's hard to say whether Priest will stay in anniversary mode and perform the previous tour's set that's full of classics such as "Breaking The Law" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" and "Living After Midnight" or throw some other songs in the mix like "Never Satisfied" or its cover of Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."

At the end of the day, a set full of classic Judas Priest songs sounds like fun, so I'm hoping for the 50th anniversary show.

In 2020, AC/DC released the album “Power Up,” but left fans waiting on tour dates coming out of the pandemic. Power Trip will mark the band's first show in seven years, so there's a lot of warranted excitement around the performance — especially considering the obstacles the group faced in 2016. That's when frontman Brian Johnson left the band because of medical issues and bassist Cliff Williams retired, but both returned in 2018, including former drummer Phil Rudd, who was fired in 2015 due to legal issues.

AC/DC’s comeback will feature Johnson, Williams, guitarists Angus Young and Stevie Young, but Rudd will not be at Power Trip. Matt Laug, who has drummed for Alice Cooper, Slash’s Snakepit and Alanis Morissette, will fill in.

I have no doubts that AC/DC will deliver and Power Trip will be a renewal of the legendary Australian band that is also celebrating 50 years. I'm hoping to hear classics such as "Thunderstruck," "Shoot To Thrill" and "Moneytalks."

Ask anyone who has been to an AC/DC concert and they'll tell you that it's one of the best music experiences of their lives. I've had people describe it to me as "mind-blowing," "unforgettable" and "different every time." So, I want to see what makes this concert, in particular, unique and unforgettable.

I've been to some amazing concerts in my day, over a 27-year stretch, but I'm told that AC/DC will rock harder than maybe anyone, so I have to see what that looks like for myself.

AC/DC has rarely played with other rock legends onstage, although Axl Rose sang for the band in 2016 while Brian Johnson dealt with hearing issues. But that has me wondering whether they could bring a rock legend out at Power Trip. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has performed "Back in Black" with Johnson and has said that he would love to perform with AC/DC one day. Maybe at Power Trip he gets his chance. That would really be something.

The best way to describe a Tool concert based on my own experience is "surrealistic," but there's never been anything ordinary in the band's music, which extends to its live performances. Consider Tool to be more of an audio and visual affair than a concert. Frontman Maynard James Keenan doesn't thirst for being front and center. The music is the purpose and will be the main idea throughout the entire set.

For those who attended Desert Trip in 2016 and saw former Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters' performance, I expect the atmosphere of Tool's live show to be the same and unlike any of the other bands performing at Power Trip, but without the inflatable pig and heavy political themes.

I'm hoping Tool will recognize the 30th anniversary of the album "Undertow" and perform some songs that have only appeared sporadically in recent setlists. Songs such as "Sober," "Undertow" and "Flood" are the epitome of Tool as a band, but it's going to be all about what fits into the live presentation.

Power Trip will end Sunday with Metallica, one of the world's most famous metal bands that was already selling out arenas before MTV played its videos. The band is currently on its M72 tour playing in stadiums around the globe, performing songs from the 1983 debut album “Kill ‘Em All” to the 2023 album “72 Seasons.”

Metallica performed in August at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and it’s likely many who attended that show will be at Power Trip.

Metallica has acknowledged special occasions, so I expect a remarkable show to end Power Trip. Maybe something like the Big 4 show in 2010 at the Empire Polo Club when Metallica performed Diamond Head’s “Am I Evil?” with members from other the bands. Maybe even a guest appearance by King Diamond, or one of the many artists such as St. Vincent or Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor who performed on the "Black Album" tribute, "The Metallica Blacklist."

—Brian Bluesky e

I'm looking forward to seeing how loud these guys are, and how well my earplugs work. In all seriousness, I live in La Quinta, not far from the polo grounds and can often hear music from the festivals from my porch. But I hear that Metallica is super loud live, and I can imagine most of the surrounding neighborhoods will feel that once the group opens with "Ecstasy of Gold."

I'm also looking forward to seeing how much of the crowd is older Metallica fans versus younger listeners, many of whom I assume will merely be there to see an iconic band before it's too late. Metallica is of course a group that has fans from every generation, but most of the truest fans are likely between the ages of 40-60. I'll bet many of them can still rock as hard as the younger fans.

I'll be right there alongside all of them, watching a band I've listened to for decades but have yet to see live.

After announcing his  retirement from touring back in February, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ozzy Osbourne has recently expressed his desire to still perform at some capacity in the future. Commercially, Ozzy is enjoying the fruits of his widely successful album Patient No. 9 . He won two GRAMMY® Awards at the 65th annual event in Los Angeles last month. He took home the hardware for Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album. It marked the metal legend’s first solo GRAMMY® win since 1994 when he won Best Metal Performance for “I Don’t Wanna Change the World ( Live & Loud ).

“I’m one lucky motherfucker to have won the Best Rock Album Grammy,” the now a five-time GRAMMY® Award winner exclaimed. “I was blessed to work with some of the greatest musicians in the world and Andrew Watt as my producer on this album. Winning the Best Metal Performance was equally gratifying being that the song featured my longtime friend and Black Sabbath bandmate, Tony Iommi.”

Metallica’s upcoming eleventh studio LP  72 Seasons arrives on April 14 via the band’s own Blackened Recordings. Produced by Greg Fidelman with frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track  72 Seasons  is Metallica’s first full length collection of new material since 2016’s  Hardwired…To Self-Destruct . The album will be released in formats including 2LP 140-gram black vinyl and limited edition variants, CD and digital download.

Additionally, Metallica are  returning to the road  this summer. The band previously announced their M72 Word Tour which will see the band perform back-to-back nights at each stop with no repeat performances. In each city, special guests on Night One will be Pantera and Mammoth WVH. Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills will serve as support on Night 2. Tickets are on sale now  HERE .

Iron Maiden brought their Legacy of the Beast Tour back to North American last year for another massive run. The band’s latest album Senjutsu arrived in 2021. The album peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album Power Up . The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. Once again, Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew Stevie Young, who took over rhythm guitar duties for Malcolm after his passing in 2017. AC/DC have not toured since their Rock or Bust trek wrapped up in 2016.

Tool have a number of festival appearances slated for 2022, including a headlining slot at Aftershock. Last summer, they released their GRAMMY®-Award winning fifth album  Fear Inoculum  as a new black vinyl set via RCA Records. The 3-disc 180 gram set on black vinyl features new artwork by guitarist Adam Jones. It comes in a triple gatefold jacket and an exclusive 12″ x 36″ double-sided poster. Last March, Tool released a re-imagined version of “Opiate,” the title track from their first EP. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first commercially-available release, the band re-worked and extended the song –  “Opiate 2 “  – with an accompanying short film.

Guns N’ Roses are embarking on a massive world tour this summer. The North American leg runs through October 16m making stops in Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Charlotte, Vancouver, and more. The band is also returning to Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania for the first U.S. show of the tour. They previously kicked off their We’re F’N Back! Tour there back in 2021. Revisit our review and live photos from the show  HERE .

Last year, Guns N’ Roses came out with a a new EP  Hard Skool . The record was released nearly a year ago on February 25, 2022. It was the first time in 28 years that vocalist Axl Rose, guitarist Slash, and bassist Duff McKagan collaborated together on new material together.

The trio was accompanied on the new studio effort by the current members of the GNR lineup, which is completed by guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer, as well as keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese. The EP featured live recordings of the band’s ‘91 power ballad “Don’t Cry” and “You’re Crazy” from their seminal debut LP  Appetite For Destruction .

Released back in August of 2021, the single “ Absurd ,” was the first new Guns N’ Roses song in 13 years.
