Budapest nightlife is pretty famous. Thanks to backpackers and stag dos, this Hungarian capital is now renowned for its late night antics and affordable drinking scene. But, this awesome city has a  not-so-secret  secret to its success.

Over in the city’s 7th district, an area that was once the Jewish Quarter, a new kind of bar was born around twenty years ago – the ruin bar.

From humble origins, this style of dilapidated drinking hole has spread around the city, and is now one of the best parts of nightlife in Budapest.

However, not all ruin bars are the same. In fact, the style of these post-Communist watering holes has changed over the years, and is now represented by tons of different options depending on what you like.

Some of them too popular for their own good, and others are practically hidden from view (you have to be in the know to find ‘em), it pays to do some research. And that’s where this article comes in.

What is a Ruin Bar?

So, what is a ruin bar? Chances are if you’ve researched anything about Budapest , you would have heard of them, and read the words “ruin bar” or “ruin pub”. While you could take it to mean that these are places to get ruined , i.e. roaring drunk, the name refers more to the venues themselves – ruins.

Called romkocsma in Hungarian, these bars started out as creative squats. It all began in the early 2000s in run-down areas of the city, where once ornate buildings had been left to ruin. Many of these had been, at one point or another, scheduled to be torn down, but were instead occupied by ramshackle bars.

Young entrepreneurs with barely any investment set out to create community spaces where they could have parties. But with no cash, the now famous aesthetic of ruin bars was actually a necessity to begin with. Patrons would bring their own tables and chairs, the owners would bring stuff from their own houses!

The building owners liked the idea that their space was being used in an innovative way, and liked that it benefited the local area. And so, the humble romkocsma was born. More followed, especially in the Jewish Quarter, along with further investment. Ruin bars then began to pop up in other areas.

These makeshift drinking holes went quickly from DIY to surprisingly upscale within a decade. But, the authenticity still remains. Ruin bars in Budapest are live and kicking to this day.

Many have branched out. Some are daytime-friendly, with things like farmers markets occupying their spaces, while others have joined forces to create multi-roomed super clubs. It’s an increasingly varied, but still community minded and friendly, party scene.

1. Púder Bárszínház

Púder Bárszínház is a cool kids’ hangout for visitors and locals alike. Unlike many ruin bars in Budapest which live up to their name, this spot is a little more upmarket. It’s not likely to be on one of the more touristy ruin pub crawls Budapest has to offer, but there’s very much a ruin bar vibe going on here.

Located on Raday Street (close to Hungarian National Museum), from the outside it looks modern and trendy, but step through the doors and you’ll be in a wonderland. The ceiling is painted to look like a sky, for one thing, and the decor is very industrial.

Its interiors are colourful with eclectic artwork and cozy corners to kick back with your pals. While “regular” drinks are very much on the menu, Púder Bárszínház is known for its very decent cocktails and delicious food menu. It’s a firm favourite for those who want to drink and eat. A good warm-up venue, if you will.

2. Éleszt?ház

Opening its doors in 2013, Éleszt?ház is definitely one for the craft beer lovers out there. Translating to “Yeast House” this ruin bar was the brainchild of big time craft beer fan Daniel Bart, who was on a mission to open up a place that served up the best beer in unique surroundings!

Éleszt?ház has all the features of a ruin bar with a rough-and-ready, crumbly courtyard and second-hand furnishings, giving it plenty of character. But obviously, the beer takes centre stage, with 20 taps to choose from.

Not only the realm for craft beer aficionados, Éleszt?ház has become much-loved by many for its friendly atmosphere and sizeable wine selection, too. When you’ve had a few drinks, check out the menu. The enormous sandwiches and sides of fries are a welcome addition. Location-wise, you’ll find this place in Ferencváros, bordering the 8th on Tuzolto Street.

One of the best ruin pubs in Budapest, Kertem is also one of the most popular. Underground, this place is not. Bursting with bohemian vibes, Kertem first grew in popularity in its original location within City Park. This put it in easy striking distance of the Museum of Fine Arts and Budapest Zoo.

At first, this ruin bar didn’t have a name. But in 2008, a customer said one day, “This place is so good, it’s like sitting in my own garden.” From then on, it was dubbed Kertem (“My Garden” in Hungarian).

Kertem has had to relocate. No longer in City Park, today you’ll find it in K ?bánya. But, surrounded by trees and crumbling industrial buildings, it’s as chill and my-garden-y as ever. Loyal customers and new converts alike keep coming back for its music, beer and burgers. Think retro records lining the walls and mis-matched picnic tables scattered under trees.

4. Ellátó Kert 

It’s all about the garden at Ellátó Kert. Rain or shine, the covered outdoor area, smack in the heart of Budapest’s party district, makes it a year-round destination. It boasts all the elements that make up a top ruin pub – crumbling, energetic, super fun.

One of the best things about Ellátó Kert are the Mexican feels. They serve up some truly incredible tacos, plus a load of other Mexican plates and drinks, too, which is unusual for a ruin bar in Budapest. But it’s a great USP! Plus, you can check out your Mexican morsels being prepared behind the bar.

Loved by locals and visitors, in the summer you can expect cyclists rocking up for a quick drink or two, and hipsters hanging out all afternoon in the courtyard. Winter here finds customers cozying up well into the wee hours. At the same time, it’s a haven for noisy groups (as are many ruin bars, let’s be honest).

5. Instant-Fogas

Instant-Fogas is a party central destination born from the merging of two ruin bar institutions: Instant and Fogas (surprise, surprise). Taking up 1,200 square meters in the 7th district, this veritable nightclub opened its doors in 2017.

It’s a curious combination of the two original bars, which somehow have both managed to keep their own identity. Fogas still oozes that classic ruin bar aesthetic, while Instant is all about its own unique vibe.

One of those seven spaces is Larm – known for its techno music – while Frame is the place to go for DnB, dubstep and jungle; Robot is for rock and metal, but for when you just want to chill, Liebling is a laid-back rooftop spot with food.

So whether you just want a few beers and some foosball, or if you’re really ready for a proper mad night out, Instant-Fogas has it all.

6. Mazel Tov

Worlds away from Instant-Fogas, we have Mazel Tov. This is probably the best ruin bar Budapest can muster up for those who don’t want to completely lose their minds, or be surrounded by drunken revelers, but still want a ruin bar aesthetic. In fact, you probably won’t even realise Mazel Tov is a ruin bar from the outside.

Located in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter, this creative enclave is an open-minded and welcoming cultural space that promotes diversity and acceptance. It’s definitely at the top end of the ruin bar world in Budapest. The atmosphere is chic and buzzy, and customers tuck into Israeli fusion dishes and classic Middle Eastern cuisine.

Mazel Tov feels like an urban oasis. Set in a long courtyard between two buildings, and under a glass roof, the bar has made full use of the historic buildings it’s surrounded by, and makes for a charmer of an evening with its stylish decor and strings of lights.

7. Doboz 

Doboz, literally meaning “Box”, is a sizeable ruin bar, and another one that sits more towards the high-end of things (though maybe not Mazel Tov levels). Also located in the Jewish Quarter, specifically along Klauzál Street, it opened in 2011 and has quickly become a firm favourite of the city.

Taking up residence among repurposed old buildings, Doboz boasts a large courtyard and enough space for around 1,500 people to enjoy the ambience. Its carefully curated interiors are hip and high-end, with contemporary design mixing with vintage furnishings and historic characteristics of the buildings.

The artsy flavour of Doboz starts with the actual name itself, which is taken from the glass box sculpture located within the grounds. Another famous landmark is a tree in the courtyard, which is claimed to be the oldest in the district (there’s a gorilla hugging it). Aesthetically pleasing or not, here you can expect good music, good food, and good drinks.

8. Kobuci Kert

Located over in the ancient district of Obuda, Kobuci Kert is a fair contender for the best ruin bar in Budapest for live music. It’s situated inside the timeworn Zichy Palota Garden, tucked away with a secret garden feel between historic buildings. There’s a definitive festival atmosphere going on, with an almost perpetual roster of live music.

It’s a good option for any music fan, as there’s a wide range of bands and artists taking to the stage, running the gamut from rock and pop, to folk and blues. Unlike some of the rowdier ruin bars, this outdoor venue is a family-friendly affair by day, becoming more lively after dark.

Overall, the vibe is pretty casual, the staff are super friendly, there’s some delicious food on offer, and a good selection of alcoholic beverages. What’s not to like?

9. Szimpla Kert

This ruin bar in Budapest’s 7th district has the very bold claim of being the first of its kind in the city. Opening its doors way back in 2002 with an easygoing environment for people to drink and socialise, it later upped sticks and moved to its current location at 14 Kazinczy Street in 2004. The building, which is a former factory, was scheduled to be demolished, but the bar saved it from the scrapheap.

Centered around its enormous courtyard, the bar also doubles up as event space, hosting flea markets, concerts and even a farmers market. Its dilapidated-chic design – serving as a template for ruin bars ever since – is constantly evolving.

There’s enough space for around 600 people (there’s often more though), one of the primary patrons of Szimpla Kert are tourists, who often arrive via the ruin bar crawls Budapest is famous for. They even have programs in place to benefit the local area, promote sustainability and support young people.

10. K?leves 

K?leves translates to “Stone Soup Garden”, taking its name from an old Hungarian fairy tale. Located in Kazinczy utca, among a gaggle of other ruin bars in the same area, K?leves is a very buzzy place to spend some time getting to know Budapest’s ruin bars.

The bar itself takes up space in what was once a well loved eatery called Little Duck Restaurant, as well as a former kosher meat factory. Now gaining a reputation for being unique among the city’s ruin bars, the owners have created an atmospheric courtyard, which many locals swear by when it comes to summer.

You’ll find hammocks, shady spots under mulberry trees, and an all-round atmosphere that feels like you’re sitting in a friend’s garden (as they ply you with drinks all afternoon). On offer are a sizeable selection of draught beers, cocktails, wine and some very tasty grilled foods to fill you up, too.

Budapest’s ruin bars are a varied bunch. Not solely for drinking, many offer up food and drink, as well as live music, farmers markets, and all sorts of other all-day events. If you happen to visit the city without even going to one of these awesome places then, well, you’re missing out.

We grew up here and saw the evolution of Budapest‘s nightlife day after day, and decided to share this experience with you. New bars and pubs are still popping up every now and then, but we are kind of old-fashioned (but not old!), and want to show you how it all started… Party all night crash the day after..

If you prefer your beer accentuated by urban decay, the very best ruin bars in Budapest will be right up your alley

Like escape rooms, ruin bars are a successful Budapest invention. So successful, in fact, that weekend nights see the streets completely mobbed in the party zone between Dob and Dohány utca near Klauzál tér. Ruin bar mugs are even sold in souvenir shops.  The concept was originally a simple one. District VII, the Jewish Quarter, was dotted with neglected courtyards, surrounded by empty flats.

Enterprising locals decked out the spaces with fairy lights and mismatching, skip-found furniture, chucked in a few incongruous artefacts, limbless mannequins, abandoned cars from the Socialist era, put up a bar counter and – ta-da! – the ruin bar was invented.  Add some light projections, maybe a bare firewall for films, and a DJ booth, keep opening hours dauntingly extensive, and there you have it: the ruin bar as we know it today. Great ruin bars to drink at in Budapest

1.  Szimpla Kert

• Bars and pubs

Szimpla Kert is the undisputed king of the Budapest ruin bar scene. The outdoor area is huge, and hung with colourful tapestries. Each table has its own umbrella. Most of the inside looks like a circus, and there’s two floors to explore (for some sense of the scale, Szimpla Kert’s two floors boast nine bars, serving over 400 drinks).

The bar was actually set up in 2002, but has continued to evolve since then. Now, it’s a cultural and social hub in the city, with concerts and live theatre four nights a week from 8pm. Plus there’s a wholesome organic farmers’ market there every Sunday, if that’s what you’re into, plus the occasional flea market in the bar’s central courtyard. Basically, you could spend every day of the week here, and you’d have a great time. 

2.  Instant-Fogas

Mega-pubs Fogas Ház and Instant merged into one 1,200-square-metre giga- party in the middle of District VII in 2017. Despite this, neither venue has lost its individuality: Fogas retains its classic ruin bar vibe, Instant its eccentricity. The new complex also accommodates other themed bars: Unterwelt (for party hits); Liebling (a chilled-out rooftop with good food and drink s ) ; Robot (rock, metal, industrial), and Frame (D&B, jungle, dubstep). It’d take a very weary soul to not find a good time at Akácfa utca 49-51 .

3.  Csendes

Though of the same vintage as its counterparts in District VII, Csendes (‘Quiet’) differs in several ways. First, there is its location, near downtown Astoria, by the pretty public park of Károlyi kert. Secondly, its opening hours aren’t nearly as hedonistic, the bar closing at the reasonable hour of midnight, and doing a decent daytime trade from 1pm, 2pm at weekends.

For all that, it’s a fine place, which ticks the usual boxes (idiosyncratic décor, mismatching furniture, wise music policy) and currently hosts alternative acoustic nights on Thursdays. Cocktails and wines are a notch above – note that Csendes consists of two venues, this ruin-bar style pub (called ‘Csendes Létterem’) that fills a former literary coffeehouse dating back to 1883, the Fiume; and wine bar Csendes Társ (‘Companion’) at the end of the street, whose tables spill out around the entrance to the park in summer. Everyone calls both Csendes (‘Chendesh’), you just need to work out which one you’re meeting at between you.

4.  Kobuci Kert

Budapest was originally three cities – Buda, Pest and Óbuda – that merged into one. Although the authorities decided against giving this new metropolis the name Óbudabudapest, Óbuda is in fact the oldest part of the city and an area where Roman ruins  rub shoulders with Communist  panelházak   (tower blocks) . Kobuci is located in the historic Zichy Palota garden, across the square from Imre Varga’s lovely umbrella-wielding statues.  Throughout its decade or so of existence , Kobuci has always been about the music: on any given night, you could see comedy hip-hoppers Bëlga , brilliant local singer Bea Palya or Hungarian Beatles tribute act the Bits. Also popular are the Táncház folk dancing nights (surprisingly popular among young Hungarians). Kobuci is a summer venue, open from mid-April till the end of September, and offers convincing evidence that there’s more to Budapest nightlife than the Pesti  romkocsmák .

5.  Élesztőház

Craft beer enthusiast Dániel Bart opened Élesztőház in 2013 with a clear mission to offer something out-of-the-ordinary. Although the courtyard follows the classic  romkocsma  formula  – ‘ we didn’t have a lot of money to spend, so we had to be clever and use second-hand and old things’ – Bart said he aimed for his bar to be as much about what you drink as how you drink it. As his wine country learned to make beer, Bart began to ‘secure a place for innovative Hungarian craft beer’. Of the 20 (or so) top-notch brews available at the industrial-style multi-tap bar, particularly popular are the Fehér Nyúl IPA and Pils and Hekkelberg Pils. Élesztőház is not for just the bearded either: ‘Our clientele has changed: now we have every kind of customer, and very few craft beer geeks,’ Bart said.

6.  Doboz

Founded in 2011, Doboz (literally, ‘box’) is an upscale ruin bar that combines a young, well-dressed clientele with wacky décor – even the huge red cube in the courtyard is dwarfed by the gigantic King Kong statue hanging from a tree, said to be twice as old as Budapest itself. Doboz comprises themed rooms playing different genres, from Latin pop to hip hop, with in-house DJs Rusty, Revolution, and Soulja appearing every week. If you get hungry after a long night dancing, Doboz is ready with burgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, salads, pizza and cheesecake.  Open Friday and Saturday nights only.

7.  Kőleves

Named after a Hungarian fairy tale about an ingenious ‘stone soup’ recipe, Kőleves Kert  evokes the same super-relaxed vibe as the first wave of ruin pubs. Its garish furniture and murals help create a party-ready atmosphere, and it’s Budapesters who predominate, aware this may well be the best Kazinczy Utca venue for catching the summer rays, drink in hand. Speaking of drinks, our advice is to keep it simple, as Kőleves cocktails can be pricey and a little underwhelming. And don’t take the bar staff’s surliness personally – it’s not just you.

8.  UdvarROM

Once it was established that a ruin bar such as Szimpla Kert could make a killing from serving drinks till late in alternative surroundings, everyone wanted a piece of the action. Diagonally opposite Doboz, UdvarROM (literally ‘CourtyardRUIN’) brings in extra punters by showing sport on many TV screens, but it otherwise sticks to the same tried and trusted formula of keeping the party mood going amid bare brick and frills-free furniture until 4am. 

While attached to the Füge Udvar next door, it serves different drinks (the domestic draught option is the more preferable Borsodi, with Hoegaarden also available) and appeals to a slightly more grown-up crowd. Look out for the neon sign proclaiming UdvarROM in the Hungarian colours of red and green, just off Wesselényi utca.

9.  Füge Udvar

The ‘Fig Courtyard’ (note the tree in the middle of the main bar) dedicates Itself to fun. In many ways, Füge Udvar  feels more like an amusement park than a bar, with its rooms for arcade machines, air hockey, table football and things that flash and bleep, a prelude to throwing shapes on one of four dancefloors. 

It’s also, like any amusement park, a money-making machine, pricier than its neighbour, UdvarROM, to which it’s attached, and geared to groups of lads on the lash. If this feels like your idea of fun, then Füge Udvar is for you. Like UdvarROM, it also screens sport in the barn-like main bar, and offers Peroni, Asahi and Pilsner Urquell alongside inferior Hungarian brands.

The 6 Best Ruin Bars In Budapest

• Offbeat Budapest

What’s something unique about contemporary Budapest? The answer, without a doubt, is ruin bars . These unusual drinking joints situated inside neglected pre-war buildings of the old Jewish Quarter have taken Budapest by storm. Know before you go that ruin bars have become so popular that mainly tourists and foreign students visit them these days. If you're looking for more Budapesters, try these local bars .

#1 Szimpla Kert

If you've spent at least five minutes researching Budapest, you must have come across Szimpla Kert, Budapest's iconic ruin bar. Likely you're also familiar with the ruin bar (romkocsma) concept : makeshift bars inside dilapidated pre-war buildings of the Jewish Quarter, furnished with clearance sales furniture and exuding an inexplicably cool atmosphere.

Today, Budapest has many ruin bars, but Szimpla Kert, which pioneered the genre, is by far the best-known. Although it's no longer the offbeat bar it was when it opened in 2004 — you'll likely have to navigate through camera-wielding tourists to approach the bar — it's still worth a visit for the experience (prices have remained relatively reasonable). If daytime activities are more your speed, come for the Sunday morning farmers' market, taking place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A word to the wise: there's a still-functional mikveh, Jewish ritual bath, right next to Szimpla (#16). It's run by the local Orthodox community and serves as a reminder of the neighborhood's Jewish past .

#2 Instant & Fogas Ház

Instant & Fogas Ház isn't so much a typical ruin bar as a massive entertainment complex inside a skeletal 1861 building in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter . Featuring more than a dozen bar counters and several dance floors, come here if you're in the mood for dancing (other ruin bars offer little space for moving your feet). Note that drinks are pricey and that customers consists almost entirely of tourists – lots of fun-loving bachelor party crews.

#3 Mazel Tov Budapest

Head to Mazel Tov if you like the ruin bar concept in theory but prefer things more upscale. This Middle Eastern restaurant inside Budapest's buzzing Jewish Quarter does have a disintegrating facade like other ruin bars, but the inside is a different story: Cheap drinks have been upgraded to cocktails, ham & cheese sandwiches to mezze plates, self-service to hostesses, and weathered furnishings to modern fittings with lush greenery.

The dishes arrive without delay to ensure that tables turn over quickly in this popular restaurant. The shawarma plate and the merguez, a North African sausage made from beef here and paired with beets, tahini, and matbucha, are reliable. You can safely skip the undersized and underseasoned beef kebab. Cocktails and plenty of Hungarian wines are available. Reservations are a must as the place gets mobbed by people every day of the week.

Fogasház , a more traditional ruin bar – these days more like a club – is next door if you'd like to compare and contrast.

#4 Csendes Vintage Bar & Café

Csendes is a popular ruin bar in downtown Budapest tucked away on a quiet backstreet. Unlike some other ruin bars with party vibes, Csendes is a mellower, sit-down venue best for conversations. This high-ceilinged space used to be a grand coffeehouse during the glory days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), which makes the current ruin bar decor — featuring a mishmash of furniture including creepy dolls hanging upside down from the walls — all the more bizarre.

For the best experience, sit by the floor-to-ceiling windows (try to book ahead as Csendes fills to capacity with a tourist-heavy crowd). Before you go, you could also visit the adorable park around the corner, Károlyi-kert, known for its atmospheric location and manicured flower beds.

#5 UdvarRom

UdvarRom is a low-priced ruin bar in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter. Like other ruin bars, it's inside a weathered pre-war building, but the place is less creatively furnished and features items you'd normally not find in a ruin bar, for example flat screen TVs and punching machines.

Instead of the decor, the price points are the main draw here: wallet-friendly vodka shots and draft beers, hence the crowd of college students, both foreign and Hungarian. Note that the inside, once the courtyard of the building, is designated as an outdoor area so smoking is allowed and fully taken advantage of. There's a burger shop on the ground floor in case you want to keep your blood alcohol level in check.

#6 Szatyor Bar

Filled with a motley collection of colorful furniture, Szatyor looks like your typical ruin bar but it's different from those swarming Budapest's party district on the other side of the Danube. This updated ruin bar is situated on the fashionable Bartók Béla Boulevard in District 11 , where middle-class Buda residents like to unwind in the evenings. Instead of scruffy students sipping low-priced beers, Szatyor draws a slightly older crowd where shirts and skirts outnumber hoodies and backpacks. Duck confit and sous-vide venison leg are rarely part of the ruin bar culinary repertoire, but here, you'll find them alongside pricey craft beers.

Attached to Szatyor Bar is a classically furnished café, Hadik, once a legendary haunt of Hungarian bohemian writers and poets. It shuttered after WWII but sprang back to life in 2010 after a long hiatus.

The Best Ruin Bars of Budapest

One of the upsides to being an independent writer is that I’m my own boss. There are no deadlines, no one to pester me, and no outside burdens. I get to write about what I want when I want — the good, the bad, and the ugly.

However, since the stories on this blog are based on what I see and do, I have no one to say things like, “Matt! There’s a cool new trend in this city. Here’s a plane ticket; go check it out and report back right away!”

And I never wished for that more than when I went to Budapest.

Because no one ever mentioned the “ruin bars” to me. It wasn’t until my second visit that I got to know what these bars were. Now, I visit them whenever I visit the city.

Ruin bars are all the rage in Budapest and have been around since the founding of Szimpla Kert, the mecca of all ruin bars. These bars are built in Budapest’s old District VII neighborhood (the old Jewish quarter) in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores, or lots. This neighborhood was left to decay after World War II, so it was a perfect place to develop an underground bar scene. (Not so underground anymore, though.)

From the outside, these bars look like normal buildings. They don’t have large signs pointing the way, you don’t hear any loud noise, and there’s no line of people waiting to get in. But once you walk in and enter the inner courtyard, you find yourself in the middle of a hip, artsy, and funky bar bustling with crowds talking, dancing, and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere. Large bouncers inside, along with posted signs, ensure that people are quiet on their way out so as to not disturb the neighbors.

Each of these ruin bars has its own personality, but they all follow a few basic principles: find an old, abandoned place, rent it out, set up a bar, fill it with flea market furniture, have a few artists come in to leave their mark on the walls and ceiling, add in some weird antiques, serve alcohol, and watch people flock in.

When you’re in these bars, you feel like you’re drinking at your local thrift store. None of the furniture matches. It’s all old. It’s eclectic. It feels like they just ransacked your grandmother’s house. The ceilings are all designed differently and the places haven’t been repaired or fixed up, and there are still holes in the walls and visible pipes everywhere.

But it all adds to the “underground” feeling each ruin bar has. If these places hadn’t been pointed out to me, I never would have found them.

Though the ruin bar movement has become mainstream and less underground than it was when it started (or even a few years ago), many of the bars have done a good job of keeping their character and staying true to their roots — even as they fill up with more tourists.

Szimpla Kert

If you don’t feel like partying but still want to visit and learn about the venue, you can stop here on a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter.

Everyone I take here says it’s one of the coolest bars they’ve ever been to. If you just visit one bar, make it this one.

Kazinczy u. 14, +36 20 261 8669, szimpla.hu. Open Monday-Friday (3pm-4am), Saturday (12pm-4am), and Sunday (9am-3:30am).  

Grandio is a ruin bar and hostel in one. It’s famous for its outdoor, tree-filled courtyard but is mostly filled with travelers and people on bar crawls since it’s also a hostel. This is a good place to start your night and meet other travelers. During the day you can find locals relaxing here with a drink in the garden. It’s not quite as rowdy as the other bars and, since it’s smaller, it has a bit more of a laid-back and intimate vibe.

Dürer Kert

A former university building, this ruin bar and music venue lets you tap into your inner college student as you drink a few beers while playing foosball, Ping-Pong, darts, and a French game called pétanque (it’s fun). The courtyard garden is a good spot to enjoy all the live music that happens in this bar.

Instant-Fogas Complex

I’m not entirely sure if this place fits into the ruin bar culture. It was much fancier and trendier than the other bars I visited. It was like being in a “real” bar. However, I was taken there as part of a ruin bar tour, and, regardless, I loved this place. You walk into the courtyard and are greeted by a tree with a red-eyed robot attached to it. It looks like a Transformer is about to attack you. There are two main rooms: one red, the other blue. They play a lot of dance music, and this place fills up toward the end of the night. The only downside is that it has more limited opening hours than other bars.

This is one of Budapest’s newest ruin bars. Mazel Tov (located in the old Jewish quarter) is a community center and restaurant serving traditional Jewish cuisine by day. At night, the courtyard is a party with DJs and live entertainment entertaining guests. It has a much fancier atmosphere than other places and is definitely a more upscale option.

Csendes Letterem Café & Bar

If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe to balance out the party atmosphere of some of the other ruin bars but don’t want to sacrifice the cool vintage aesthetic, this is the bar for you. It’s located right in the heart of Budapest and is the perfect place to relax and share drinks with friends or settle in for an evening of conversation. The bar also serves food and has Wi-Fi, so you’ll often find digital nomads mingling here.

He met us punctually at our hotel and we proceded to head towards the Buda District and Castle. He told us many interesting snippets about the locality and Hungarian history. We learned about the origins of Hungary, many famous Hungarians (Rubiks Cube, the biro pen, anyone? Amongst other interesting gems)! When reached the Castle, we were able to get some fantastic Photos of the iconic Chain Bridge and the Pest Side including the equally iconic Parliament Building. Laslo shared a number of friendly anecdotes to give us an insight of Hungarian culture. We learned about their humour, their ingenuity and their romantic side! We stopped by the Mathias Fountain, a band playing traditional music and the Royal courtyard and stables with the sunset in the background. We then stopped at a lovely café for a well-deserved coffee and cake. It was so delicious! It was getting dark, but this was perfect timing to see St Mathias Church and the Bastion (it is free after 7). This was a highlight of the tour, as we were able to see the Pest side in All its glory with Parliament lit up and other attractions (the Budapest Eye). It was so beautiful! After taking more photos and we were regaled with final stories about how some Hungarian students wish for luck in their imminent exams as well as a final World War Two story. Wow! What a history, we needed more time to explore (we didn’t get to the underground caves for instance)! With that, the tour (alas) was over. We thoroughly enjoyed the few hours spent with Lazlo (again, highly recommended) and he escorted us back to a convenient central spot in Pest to continue our enjoyment of this beautiful city! She started the tour by meeting us at our hotel, which was a great way to begin. Whether on a river cruise or exploring Europe on your own, Budapest, Hungary is an exciting city to visit. Admiring historic sites, soaking in thermal baths, perusing museums, and pedaling along the Danube River are among the many things to do in Budapest, Hungary. On my first visit to the capital city of Hungary,  Budapest was the starting point for our AmaWaterways Melodies of the Danube River cruise. I enjoyed it so much that three months later my daughter, Christina, and I spent three days in Budapest before a Christmas market river cruise along the Danube with Viking Cruises. While on the cruise, we had an additional two days in Budapest, which gave us several days to explore Hungary’s beautiful capital city.

Where is Budapest, Hungary

Budapest straddles the Danube River in Central Europe. Hillside Buda is located on the west bank while modern Pest  i s on the east bank. They’re connected by the historic 19th-century Chain Bridge, completed in 1849. It was the first bridge to span the Danube River. Additional bridges, the Elisabeth Bridge, Liberty Bridge, and Margaret Bridge also connect Buda and Pest.

Good public transportation makes it easy to get around Budapest. However, I recommend taking a guided tour with a local to learn more about the city, and for insider tips on shopping and dining. On sightseeing tours, you’ll visit top attractions while learning about Hungary’s  19th-century architecture and the dark history of the Soviet and Nazi regimes.

Budapest at night is stunning. The majestic Hungarian Parliament Building and bridges are illuminated, casting a golden glow to the city.

Language and Cuisine

Both Hungarian and English are spoken in Budapest. But just note that in Hungary, the letter “s” is pronounced as “sh.” So the correct pronunciation for Budapest is Budapesht.

Hungarian cuisine is delicious and typically seasoned with paprika, a spice made from ground, dried red peppers. Hungary is a foodie haven with traditional dishes that include goulash (a beef stew) and chicken paprikash. Pair your meal with Hungarian wine and a shot of  Pálinka (fruit brandy).

Christina and I used our Budapest cards at museums, thermal baths, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and for free public transportation. The cards can be bought online, at the airport, and the information center in Varoshaza Park.  

Admire St. Stephen’s Basilica

Located in the heart of Pest, St. Stephen’s Basilica took 50 years to build and was completed in 1905. Named after Hungary’s first king, St. Stephen’s is the largest church in Budapest. The Roman Catholic church was built in the neoclassical style and features two large bell towers. The interior glass paintings and mosaics are so colorful, complex, and detailed that it’s almost hard to take it all in.  Fortunately, there’s no rush. Take your time walking or sitting in a chair to admire the artwork.

Admission tickets are sold across the street. Show your Budapest card for a discount. During the Christmas holidays, one of Budapest’s largest Christmas markets takes place just outside the cathedral.

Ride the Ferris Wheel of Budapest

For incredible panoramic views of the city, hop on the Ferris Wheel of Budapest. It’s located in Erzsebet Square, a short walking distance from St. Stephen’s Basilica. The ride is about 10 minutes as the wheel turns three times.

Visit Dohany Street Synagogue

Europe’s largest synagogue is here in Budapest. It consists of an ornately decorated interior, a museum, and a memorial garden that features a weeping willow Tree of Life sculpture. Also known as the Great Synagogue, the Moorish-style structure was built in 1859 and seats 3,000 people. The attached Hungarian Jewish Museum contains religious relics, a Holocaust Room, and historical exhibitions.

The synagogue is also the meeting place for sightseeing tours of the Jewish Quarter.

Explore the Jewish Quarter

Still, home to a large Jewish community, the historic area also attracts tourists to its boutiques, galleries, cafes, and ruin bars (funky pubs situated in old buildings). Szimpla Kert, which started the ruin bars or ruin pubs trend, is an integral part of the Jewish Quarter’s vibrant nightlife.

Learn About Heroes’ Square

Built in 1896, Heroes’ Square is a site of historical significance. The square and the Millenary Monument are dedicated to those who lost their lives while fighting for Hungary’s independence. Statues that represent seven Magyar chieftains (the founders of Hungary) are situated at the base of the column, which is topped with the Archangel Gabriel. Behind the column are matching colonnades with 14 statues of royalty and other prominent figures in Hungary’s history.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  If you visit during winter, you can take a spin on the large ice skating rink across the street.

Visit the Hungarian Parliament Building

Dominating the left bank of the Danube River,  the neo-gothic-style Hungarian Parliament is Budapest’s most famous building. Built by a thousand workers between 1885 and 1902, the building has 24 towers with arcades and high windows. While the Hungarian National Assembly still meets here, the Parliament is open to the public for guided walking tours. Whether seen from land or a river boat, the Hungarian Parliament Building is a majestic sight, especially at night when it’s illuminated.

Tour the Hungarian State Opera House

Take in an opera or a 60-minute guided tour of the neo-Renaissance-style Hungarian State Opera House. Learn about music and 19th-century architecture as you peruse the lounge area, plush boxes, and posh auditorium.

Visit Castle Hill

The castle district is a must-see part of Budapest. On my first visit, we climbed a series of stairs and then rode a funicular up Castle Hill to the Castle District, on the Buda side. On my second visit, we rode a tour bus straight to the top. Castle District is home to Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. The city views from Fisherman’s Bastion are spectacular and provide an aerial view of the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Danube River. Visit Castle Hill Monday – Saturday. Matthias Church is not open to the public on Sundays.

Take a peek inside Matthias Church, adorned with historical motifs. Also situated in the Castle District is Buda Castle, housing the Budapest History Museum, which traces events from Roman times. The Castle District is a great place to shop for paprika, locally made handicrafts, decorative items, and traditional sweets in charming boutiques.

Enjoy Views From Fisherman’s Bastion

Located in the historic district of Castle Hill , Fisherman’s Bastion is a neo-Gothic terrace that offers spectacular views of the city and Matthias Church. It was designed and built in 1905 by Frigyes Schulek, the same architect who built the adjacent Matthias Church .  Fisherman’s Bastion is named after the local fishermen who lived below in the Víziváros (Water Town) neighborhood between Castle Hill and the Danube.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  While there’s a fee to climb up the bastion, there’s easy access to the terrace that is free.

Soak in Thermal Baths

Budapest has numerous thermal springs due to its location on a fault line. So it’s no surprise that thermal bathhouses are among the best things to do in Budapest. The following top three each offer a different experience, so if time permits, it’s fun to try all three: popular Szechenyi, historic Rudas (recommended to me by locals), and upscale Gellért Baths . They each have restrooms, showers, and lockers.

Szechenyi Baths

Located in City Park, this popular Neo-Baroque-style palace with a copper dome houses three large outdoor pools and 15 indoor pools of varying sizes. It opened in 1913.

SheBuysTravel Tip:  Use your Budapest card for a discount. The women’s locker areas get crowded. For fewer crowds and more privacy, use the lockers at the far end.

Gellért Baths

Established in 1918, the Gellért Bath House is part of the Hotel Gellért in Buda and offers massages.

Rudas Bath House

While on an AmaWaterways river cruise, we were docked between Rudas and Gellért bath houses. The young woman in reception said her favorite was the traditional Rudas Turkish bathhouse, which was built in the 1500s. I appreciated her advice and enjoyed the five mineral pools varying in temperature from cool to warm situated under a large Ottoman dome. In contrast to this historic Turkish bath, the facility houses a modern swimming pool, and a large hot tub overlooking the Danube River.

Hike Gellért Hill (hidden gem)

Overlooking the Danube River, Gellért Hill offers panoramic views of the city.  Ride a bus or hike to the top for spectacular city views. Also situated at the top is the Liberty Statue, commemorating Hungary’s liberation from Nazi Germany. Start the walk from the Rudas thermal bath house.

Shop at Great Market Hall

The Great Market Hall, also called the Central Market Hall, is near the waterfront on the Pest side of Budapest. If you’re docked here on a river cruise, it’s a short walk to the market, where you can find all sorts of traditional (and seasonal) products and food like stuffed cabbage, sausages, and chimney cakes. It’s a fun place to shop for gifts and souvenirs.

Tour House of Terror

Walking along today’s peaceful, tree-lined Andrássy Avenue, it’s hard to imagine the atrocities that took place inside Andrássy Avenue 60 in the 20th century. But a tour through the well-designed, multi-level House of Terror museum reveals Hungary’s dark period in the 1940s -1950s. The building was the former headquarters for the Arrow Cross (Hungarian Nazis) during World War II and communist Hungary’s secret police between 1945 and 1956. Exhibits are informative and chilling, and include a slow-moving elevator to the basement where victims were tortured and killed.

Notice Shoes on the Danube Bank

Along one side of the Danube are 60 pairs of iron shoes set into the concrete of the Danube River. The shoes serve as a memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who were shot and thrown into the icy Danube River by the members of the Arrow Cross Party in 1944 and 1945.

Relax on Margaret Island

Named after Margit, the daughter of a 13th-century king, Margaret Island is a place of respite between Buda and Pest. There are no permanent residents but there’s a park that’s open to the public.

Dine in Budapest

Budapest is a foodie’s delight with an assortment of restaurants. On our first evening in Budapest, my daughter googled restaurants and Ferdinand Monarchy popped up with great reviews. The food and service were impeccable.

The following evening we ate dinner at Cafe Vian, a cozy restaurant that serves French Hungarian cuisine. We ordered chicken paprikash and the Hungarian Country Plate (ham, sausage, salami, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, and paprika). A very tasty and traditional Hungarian meal.

Stay at the Corinthia Hotel

The historic Corinthia Hotel is centrally located on the Pest side of Budapest. From the luxury hotel, Christina and I walked to restaurants and many major attractions like the Opera House, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and House of Terror.
