African safari death: Woman who lived part-time in Arizona killed by elephant

A 79-year-old woman who lived part-time in Sun City, Arizona was killed by an elephant while on an African safari.

An elephant charged the vehicle she was in, which was filled with other tourists.

This, of course, is a very traumatic time for Gail Mattson's family.

She has two kids. Her daughter says she loved to travel and had planned for this trip to be her last big vacation.

"She was actually going to turn 80 on July 2, and we were planning a big 80th birthday party for her," her daughter Rona said.

Rona described her mother as a strong and healthy woman who enjoyed traveling.

"This was kind of like her last bucket list item," she said.

Gail died on Saturday, March 30 when she was attacked on an African safari in Zambia.

Rona says there were two drivers on the safari. One of them saw the elephant and thought it appeared aggressive.

"The first Jeep was able to get away, but the second Jeep wasn't able to get away, and they got stopped by some vegetation, and they just couldn't get out of there fast enough," Rona explained. "I believe the elephant charged from a mile and a half away and charged straight up to the Jeep and took his husks and flipped the jeep over."

Gail was on the trip with a friend also from Arizona. She told Rona what happened.

"She told me they rolled over to a tree, and they sat there, I believe, for a solid five minutes. She said they did not bat an eye. The elephant was right in front of them starting them down. She said she thought that he was probably going to kill them, but after 5 minutes she said, I think he just got bored and just wandered off," Rona said.

It was then that the group realized Gail had died when the Jeep flipped over.

Rona says her mom will be known for working hard, traveling and having a zest for life.

"As tragic as this is, she really lived every minute of life and enjoyed it," Rona said.

According to the news release from Wilderness, four other people were treated for minor injures. A fifth person was taken to a private medical facility in South Africa.

Gail also lived part-time in Minnesota .

American woman, 79, killed during African safari after elephant charges truck

A Minnesota woman died after her tour vehicle was charged by an elephant during a safari in Africa.

Gail Mattson, who was 79, was on safari at Kafue National Park in western Zambia on March 30 when a bull elephant approached her tour group’s truck, which was carrying six tourists and a guide.

The elephant ran toward the truck and flipped it over, as seen in a video shared on social media that appears to show the incident. 

Mattson’s daughter, Rona Wells, confirmed that her mother passed away while on safari, writing in an April 2 Facebook post that her mom “lost her life in a tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

The tour company that operated Mattson’s tour, Wilderness, confirmed in an April 2 press release that an American tourist died after a tour vehicle was “unexpectedly charged” by an “aggressive bull elephant.’

“Our guides are extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Keith Vincent, the CEO of Wilderness, said in a statement. 

Another female tourist was injured in the incident, and four other guests received treatment for minor injuries, according to Wilderness.

The tour company also said in a statement that Mattson’s body would be repatriated to the United States with help from Zambian authorities and the U.S. embassy in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

This incident came after another situation involving an aggressive elephant occurred in South Africa’s Pilanesberg National Park last month.

In a video captured by a tourist that appears to show the moment, the elephant can be seen charging a safari tour truck and lifting it with its tusks. No one was hurt in that incident. 

These types of frightening run-ins with wildlife are quite rare during safaris, Marlon du Toit, a professional safari guide and wildlife photographer, told NBC News. 

Commenting on the fatal incident in Zambia, du Toit said “it’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate react so aggressively.” 

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’ve never had an encounter as aggressive (as) that with elephants,” he added.

He also told NBC News that he had worked with the tour company involved in the Zambia incident for years, and called them one of the best in Africa.

“Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands  of guests on safari on a daily basis, with no negative consequences,” he said.

Elephant attack during safari kills 80-year-old American tourist in Zambia

The tourist died after the attack at Kafue National Park.

An elderly American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked a vehicle during a game drive in Zambia, the safari operator said.

The incident took place Saturday morning at Kafue National Park in Zambia, a Lusaka police spokesperson confirmed to ABC News.

"An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp," Wilderness, the company operating the safari, said in a statement to ABC News Wednesday.

The 80-year-old woman was injured during the "unexpected" incident and transferred to a hospital in South Africa, where she later died, according to Wilderness. Four other people received treatment for minor injuries after the incident, the company said.

"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in the statement, adding, that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.

"Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide's route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough," Vincent said.

Following the attack, Kafue National Park management was immediately called to assist and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to Vincent. Local police, Zambia's Department of National Parks & Wildlife and other authorities are involved in the investigation, he said.

Wilderness is cooperating with the investigation, Vincent said.

"This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died," he said in the statement. "We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident."

The elderly woman's remains will be repatriated to her family in the U.S. with support from local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, according to the statement.

Last month, a similar bull elephant attack took place in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Videos of the March 18 incident show a bull elephant lifting a 22-seat safari truck up several times with his trunk before letting it drop. There were no deaths reported in that incident.

Hendry Blom, a bystander who caught the incident on camera, told ABC News: "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."

Elephant Charges Safari Truck, Flips It, Kills 80-Year-Old American

Tragedy struck in Zambia over the weekend when an elephant estimated to weigh five tons charged a safari truck and flipped it several times resulting in the death of an 80-year-old American woman. 

A group of six tourists, according to media reports , were out on a photography tour on Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. when the truck was attacked in the Kafue National Park. "Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough," safari operator Wilderness Destinations CEO Keith Vincent told a Zambia news outlet. 

Besides the one death, another tourist was evacuated to South Africa for injuries sustained in the attack. 

Let's cut to the chase here, this is just the nature of the business you get into when you sign up to play ball on the elephant's turf. You want to get a good look? This elephant gave you a real good view before flipping the safari truck several times. 

Personally, I'll sit at home and watch those BBC documentaries where others go into the bush to see Dumbo seconds before he starts flipping trucks. I'm good on the couch. 

But…but…you'll never see nature with that attitude!  

You know who else will never see nature? The couple that was honeymooning last year in Uganda when they were murdered by ISIS-linked rebels.

Price of zero-day exploits rises as companies harden products against hackers

A startup is now offering millions of dollars for tools to hack iphones, android devices, whatsapp, and imessage.

Tools that allow government hackers to break into iPhones and Android phones, popular software like the Chrome and Safari browsers, and chat apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, are now worth millions of dollars — and their price has multiplied in the last few years as these products get harder to hack.

On Monday, startup Crowdfense published its updated price list for these hacking tools, which are commonly known as “zero-days,” because they rely on unpatched vulnerabilities in software that are unknown to the makers of that software. Companies like Crowdfense and one of its competitors Zerodium claim to acquire these zero-days with the goal of re-selling them to other organizations, usually government agencies or government contractors, which claim they need the hacking tools to track or spy on criminals.

Crowdfense is now offering between $5 and $7 million for zero-days to break into iPhones, up to $5 million for zero-days to break into Android phones, up to $3 million and $3.5 million for Chrome and Safari zero-days respectively, and $3 to $5 million for WhatsApp and iMessage zero-days.

In its previous price list , published in 2019, the highest payouts that Crowdfense was offering were $3 million for Android and iOS zero-days.

The increase in prices comes as companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft are making it harder to hack their devices and apps, which means their users are better protected.

“It should be harder year over year to exploit whatever software we’re using, whatever devices we’re using,” said Dustin Childs, who is the head of threat awareness at Trend Micro ZDI. Unlike CrowdFense and Zerodium, ZDI pays researchers to acquire zero-days, then reports them to the companies affected with the goal of getting the vulnerabilities fixed.

“As more zero-day vulnerabilities are discovered by threat intelligence teams like Google’s, and platform protections continue to improve, the time and effort required from attackers increases, resulting in an increase in cost for their findings,” said Shane Huntley, the head of Google’s Threat Analysis Group, which tracks hackers and the use of zero-days.

In a report last month , Google said it saw hackers use 97 zero-day vulnerabilities in the wild in 2023. Spyware vendors, which often work with zero-day brokers, were responsible for 75 percent of zero-days targeting Google products and Android, according to the company.

People in and around the zero-day industry agree that the job of exploiting vulnerabilities is getting harder.

David Manouchehri, a security analyst with knowledge of the zero-day market, said that “hard targets like Google’s Pixel and the iPhone have been becoming harder to hack every year. I expect the cost to continue to increase significantly over time.”

“The mitigations that vendors are implementing are working, and it’s leading the whole trade to become much more complicated, much more time consuming, and so clearly this is then reflected in the price,” Paolo Stagno, the director of research at Crowdfense, told TechCrunch.

Stagno explained that in 2015 or 2016 it was possible for only one researcher to find one or more zero-days and develop them into a full-fledged exploit targeting iPhones or Androids. Now, he said, “this thing is almost impossible,” as it requires a team of several researchers, which also causes prices to go up.

Crowdfense currently offers the highest publicly known prices to date outside of Russia, where a company called Operation Zero announced last year that it was willing to pay up to $20 million for tools to hack iPhones and Android devices. The prices in Russia, however, may be inflated because of the war in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions, which could discourage or outright prevent people from dealing with a Russian company.

Outside of the public view it’s possible that governments and companies are paying even higher prices.

“The prices Crowdfense is offering researchers for individual Chrome [Remote Code Execution] and [Sandbox Escape] exploits are below market rate from what I have seen in the zero-day industry,” said Manouchehri, who previously worked at Linchpin Labs, a startup that focused on developing and selling zero-days. Linchpin Labs was acquired by U.S. defense contractor L3 Technologies (now known as L3Harris ) in 2018.

Alfonso de Gregorio, the founder of Zeronomicon , an Italy-based startup that acquires zero-days, agreed, telling TechCrunch that prices could “certainly” be higher.

Zero-days have been used in court-approved law enforcement operations. In 2016, the FBI used a zero-day provided by a startup called Azimuth to break into the iPhone of one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, according to The Washington Post . In 2020, Motherboard revealed that the FBI — with the help of Facebook and an unnamed third-party company — used a zero-day to track down a man who was later convicted for harassing and extorting young girls online.

There have also been several cases where zero-days and spyware have allegedly been used to target human rights dissidents and journalists in Ethiopia , Morocco , Saudi Arabia , and the United Arab Emirates , among other countries with poor human rights records. There have also been similar cases of alleged abuse in democratic countries like Greece , Mexico , Poland , and Spain . (Neither Crowdfense, Zerodium, or Zeronomicon, have ever been accused of being involved in similar cases.)

Zero-day brokers, as well as spyware companies like NSO Group and Hacking Team have often been criticized for selling its products to unsavory governments. In response, some of them now pledge to respect export controls in an effort to limit potential abuses from their customers.

Stagno said that Crowdfense follows the embargoes and sanctions imposed by the United States — even if the company is based in the United Arab Emirates. For example, Stagno said that the company wouldn’t sell to Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Russia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Syria — all on U.S. sanctions lists .

“Everything the U.S. does, we are on the ball,” Stagno said, adding that if an existing customer gets on the U.S. sanctions list, Crowdfense would abandon it. “All the companies and governments directly sanctioned by the USA are excluded.”

At least one company, spyware consortium Intellexa, is on Crowdfense’s particular blocklist.

“I can’t tell you whether it has been a customer of ours and whether it has stopped being one,” Stagno said. “However, as far as I am concerned now at this moment Intellexa could not be a customer of ours.”

In March, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Intellexa’s founder Tal Dilian as well as a business associate of his, the first time the government imposed sanctions on individuals involved in the spyware industry. Intellexa and its partner company Cytrox was also sanctioned by the U.S., making it harder for the companies, as well as the people running it, to continue doing business.

These sanctions have caused concern in the spyware industry, as TechCrunch reported .

Intellexa’s spyware has been reported to have been used against U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul, U.S. Senator John Hoeven, and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, among others.

De Gregorio, the founder of Zeronomicon, declined to say who the company sells to. On its site, the company has published a code of business ethics , which includes vetting customers with the goal of avoiding doing business “with entities known for abusing human rights,” and respecting export controls.

American tourist killed after elephant rammed truck on African safari seen smiling in photos before attack

T he American tourist killed by a charging bull elephant that flipped over their safari vehicle in Zambia over the weekend has been identified as an adventurous 79-year-old woman who wanted the trip to be her “last big adventure.”

Mattson, who was visiting from Minnesota, was pictured the day she was killed on the safari vehicle holding a flower, her grieving family told KSTP.

She was one of six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a game drive Saturday in Kafue National Park when they came under attack by the incensed animal.

Terrifying video footage shows the elephant chasing after the safari vehicle moments before it charged the group, tipping the truck over as the guide repeatedly yelled at the creature. 

The passenger continues to record as the elephant flips the vehicle over. 

Family told the outlet that the US Embassy contacted them about her death.

Loved ones described the 79-year-old as kind, adventurous and very active in her community.

“She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” said  her friend  John Longabauth. “Because her birthday is in the summer — I think she was going to be 80, and she felt like she would start slowing down. To be honest, I don’t know if she’d slow down or not. But at least you wouldn’t be traveling as far, probably.”

Mattson split time between living in Minnesota and Arizona, her family said.

Her friends in Arizona held a memorial for her following her sudden death. 

According to the Safari company, one other guest was hurt and taken to a private medical facility.

The four other tourists on the trip were treated for minor injuries after the violent outburst.

The horrifying incident unfolded at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday during a game drive through Kafue National Park, Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement. 

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to evacuate the victims. 

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent said.

The group of tourists had been staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa. 

The tour group is making arrangements for Mattson’s body to be returned to the US. 

Police and other authorities are investigating the incident.
