Tata Motors is on a wild update streak with its models. First, the Nexon got an update, then the Harrier and now, the flagship Safari gets a revamp. This isn't a minor nip and tuck job, because Tata has gone to town with the changes, and crucially, has focused on giving the Safari its own identity, rather than it being deemed as just a Harrier with a third row. It gets a completely new look, refreshed interior with modern tech and mechanical changes. Let’s see how well it has worked out.

Tata Safari facelift exterior styling

The Safari carries over Tata’s new design language without any change to the sheet metal. The ‘soft’ parts like the bumpers, grille and lights are all new and this has completely changed the look of the car. The LED Daytime Running Lamp runs across the width of the nose, with the Safari also getting sequential turn indicators. The ‘parametric’ grille is a single-piece unit compared to the Harrier’s split setup and is a point of differentiation between the two models, and, for the Safari, they are body-coloured. Further down, the LED headlamps and LED fog lamps are housed in a black casing, which also gets Safari lettering in chrome. Since there is no split grille, the air intake is blacked out with a faux metal scuff plate for that butch look.

safari car inside

Over to the side, the Safari gets 19-inch wheels on the top-spec variant and 17- and 18-inch options on the lower trims. The wheels do a very good job of adding road presence, and also get aero inserts that help reduce drag. You might also remember the wheel design that was previewed on the Tata Sierra concept shown at the Auto Expo. The alloys are wrapped with 245/55 R19 tyres, and being relatively lower profile, they have an impact on ride quality. More on that in a bit. Other Safari traits continue like a rising shoulder line and the roof with the famous kink.

safari car inside

At the rear, things are simpler, with revisions to the tail-lamps, which make it sharper, and an LED strip joining the two. The bumper too is all new with sharp lines, and there is a faux metal bash plate for that rugged look. That said, one of the most important updates is seen when you wag your leg under the bumper: the boot now gets gesture control for opening, and is finally electric.

Tata Safari facelift interior and features

Like the Harrier, the Safari comes specced with the ‘persona’ that you choose. The top-spec ‘Accomplished’ gets a dual-tone interior with white and brown upholstery. It has an air of premiumness, but the light-coloured seats and panels on the steering and doors will be difficult to maintain. The passenger side also gets an artificial wood panel with pinstriping which looks upmarket but may not be to everyone’s tastes.

safari car inside

The Safari gets the same four-spoke steering as the Harrier along with a gloss black panel and the backlit Tata logo that you just can't keep free of smudges and marks. There is also a fully digital instrument cluster that has customisable layouts, and the option of a map view once you’ve connected your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That said, for a full map view, Android users will have to use Google Maps and Apple users will have to use Apple Maps. The cluster also displays drive mode changes, terrain mode changes and ADAS settings as well. The brightness, sharpness and overall viewing angles are good.

Next is the 12.3-inch touchscreen that gets wireless connectivity for Apple and Android and is slick to respond. It also packs in a lot of the settings for HVAC, ADAS, air purifier, audio modes and mood lighting. The audio system is also updated from a 9-speaker system to 10 speakers, along with a sub-woofer and 13 presets in the screen to choose from. The presets are very well calibrated and do enhance the music experience. You can also have individual modes for individual seats making the whole experience even more personal. The other highlight on the Safari is the 360-degree camera, which is high resolution and is a big plus while manoeuvring this SUV.

safari car inside

Under the screen are the HVAC controls on a gloss black panel, with the only physical buttons being the temperature toggles for the dual-zone climate control. Everything else, including the fan speed, is on a touch-based panel. Adjusting the fan speed or even functions like the electric tailgate opening is rather difficult as the feedback and response from the panel aren’t good. On the move, this would be an even more frustrating experience, and it’s better to use voice commands, which, despite not being the quickest, at least doesn't let you fumble.

Further down is a wireless charging pad that is difficult to access. You need to angle your phone in an awkward manner trying to dodge the knurled terrain response selector and cram your phone in, which, inevitably, will hit the panels around. Taking it out is the same story as you more often than not end up hitting the HVAC buttons or scraping your phone. For charging, there is a USB-A and a 45W type-C port as well.

safari car inside

Next is the terrain response selector that is unnecessarily large, and beside it are the non-backlit drive mode buttons. When you do change the drive modes, however, the ambient lighting too changes colour momentarily. Green for Eco, blue for City and red for Sport. What’s also new on the Safari is the drive selector for the automatic version, which is a shift-by-wire mechanism, and an electric parking brake, which replaces the aircraft-style brake lever on the top-spec version. The centre storage also gets vents to be used as a cool box, and a USB-A and a type-C port as well.

Tata Safari facelift seating

The seats on the new Safari are powered for both driver and passenger with memory functions for the driver and ventilation for both. They are fairly broad and supportive, but cushioning is on the firmer side. However, on the whole, the new Safari is leaps ahead of the previous gen, both in terms of features and design.

safari car inside

There has been no change to the Safari’s wheelbase, so space in the middle row remains unchanged, The captain seat version also gets ventilation and there are USB-A and type-C ports here as well. There are AC vents in the B-pillar too, but surprisingly, no blower control for the middle row. The theatre-like seating position allows you to get a good view out, and the addition of sunblinds is a plus to have on hot days. What further elevates the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof, which gets ambient lighting and adds flair to the cabin at night.

Entering the third row past the captain seats isn’t easy since they don’t tumble down. They only recline and don’t slide forward enough for easy access. It’s easier to use the space between the two seats as a passage to access the third row. However, once you’re seated at the back, the amount of room is impressive even for tall adults. Sure, headroom is tight for occupants over six feet, but the adjustable backrest angle and sliding middle row make the third row properly usable, and the most spacious in its class. There are three-point seat belts for two, individual headrests, AC blower controls and USB-A and a type-C ports. The downside is the boot space, which, with all three rows up, is only good for a couple of soft bags.

safari car inside

In terms of safety, the Safari gets the usual goody bag of sensors and assists, along with ADAS. The Safari gets six airbags as standard, and the top-spec version gets an additional knee airbag, taking the count to seven.

Tata Safari engine, gearbox and performance

The updated Safari gets the same 2.0-litre diesel engine making 170hp and 350Nm as before, but in BS6.2 guise. Tata claims to have upped the damping and refinement but, to be honest, it is still one of the sore points of the Safari: there is that typical diesel clatter at idle that seeps into the cabin. As you get going and the engine speed rises, the gruff noise increases. That said, the engine feels strong to perform and has a wide torque band. Mid-range is where you will get that punch, and response overall is solid. The Safari is also very happy and comfortable at highway speeds. Changing the drive modes also changes the response, just as before. In Eco and City, the engine is laidback, but switch to Sport, and there is a noticeable gain in response. This is largely to do with the pedal mapping, which, as you change modes, alters the response to the accelerator, giving you a noticeable change in driving manners.

safari car inside

Mated to the engine is the same six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Quick shifts and lightning-fast responses are not something it prefers, and the shifts are carried over in a leisurely manner. Sure, sport mode does help, but inherently, it's a relaxed gearbox.

To gain more control, there is also the option of paddle shifters, a new addition in the updated Safari. However, they don’t particularly enhance the driving experience as manually shifting via the paddles isn’t very quick or responsive. Operate the paddle shifters and the powertrain automatically defaults to Sport mode, but the experience isn’t exactly sporty. The shifts are slow and downshifts are frustratingly delayed if the engine is at high revs. This doesn’t allow for enthusiastic manual shifting and it's best to let the gearbox work on its own. What is another irritant is operating the new shift-by-wire shifter, which requires the right technique. During three-point turns, shifting from D to R and back is a fiddly affair, since there isn't a clear response from the lever. It often gets stuck in N or simply doesn’t change the gear. This will take owners some time to get used to, and a lot of patience.

Tata Safari handling and ride comfort

Speaking of three-point turns, arguably the biggest and the most important update on this Safari is the steering system. Gone is the older hydraulic power steering unit, and in its place is a modern electric power steering (EPS) that has transformed the way the Safari handles. To start off, at low and city speeds, you no longer have to muscle the car around, and get your arm workout done. The steering is light and easy in Eco and City mode, making parking very convenient. In Sports, it does weigh up to add some feel while driving. Three-point turns are done with minimal effort and getting it out of tight spots is very easy too. Tata has also increased the track on the new Safari owing to the bigger wheels, but it isn't something that was noticeable through corners.

On the subject of ride, Tata has retuned the suspension with updated dampers, spring rates and new bushings, giving the Safari a softer setup than before. However, shod with big, 19-inch wheels and lower profile tyres, bump absorption is compromised. Over a broken patch of road, you will notice sharp movements and potholes are met with quite a thud. The toughness of that Land Rover platform does shine through with the taut and tight body control the faster you go. On the highway, the ride is composed and flat, and the sense of control and stability you get is the hallmark of the Safari, which makes it a great high speed cruiser.

Tata Safari ADAS performance

The other big talking point on the Safari is the ADAS: it gets adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Lane keep assist is also part of the package, but will be introduced later as a software update.

safari car inside

In our conditions, the ADAS works well, especially the adaptive cruise control which does the job even at slow bumper-to-bumper speeds. The lane departure warning system is good at detecting lanes correctly too. What could have been better, is the automatic emergency braking. We found that despite driving closer than usual to the car in front (done for testing the ADAS) it did not activate the brakes, despite adjusting the setting of the brake activation to the maximum distance. Tata claims this is done specifically with India’s erratic traffic conditions, but we would have liked the emergency braking to kick in from a safe distance. Rear cross-traffic alerts and blind spot monitoring, on the other hand, work flawlessly.

Another plus point is that the Safari, along with the new Harrier, recently received a 5-star rating in adult and child occupant protection by Global NCAP.

Tata Safari verdict

Prices for the Safari start at Rs 16.19 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom, India) for the base Smart manual variant.  With this update, many of the Safari’s weaknesses have been addressed, with the electric power steering, electric tail gate, more features and a modern design. However, the engine refinement and some ergonomic issues are still present.

safari car inside

But what the Safari will be banking on is its fantastic road presence, hugely practical and spacious cabin, and lastly, the wide array of variants on offer. It sure is a lot more car for the money now, and that’s something SUV buyers today are willing to pay for.

What is the logic of such a steep price hike within 4 years? Not just this model, it seems like the luxury makers have collectively driven up pricing of all models in the last 5 years in a super aggressive manner - which is neither linked to change in taxes/ duties or exchange rates. Could this be a collusion of some sorts?

Roundup: All the Enthusiast-Built Safari Creations That Will Inspire You to Hit the Backroads

Roundup: Enthusiast-built safari cars that will inspire you to hit the dirt roads

Written by Daniel Lackey

The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.

Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.

Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.

We scanned the interwebs and Instagram to find some of our favorite builds which you can browse and follow below:

Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa

The car: Dropped Alfa | The photographer: Jeff Stockwell

Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.

The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build.

I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix

The car and photo: Jakub Marek (I Am Detailing)

Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.

After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.

Alfa Romeo GTV6: Aether Alpine Alfa

safari car inside

The car: Aether's Alpine Alfa GTV6 | The photographer: Shayan Bokaie

Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.

The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

Man, 24, fatally shot in car on Brooklyn street

A 24-year-old man was shot to death inside a car on a Brooklyn street just a few blocks from where a man was gunned down a week earlier , police said Sunday.

The latest victim was sitting inside a car near E. 54th St. and Church Ave. in East Flatbush when he was shot multiple times in the abdomen about 8:20 p.m. Saturday, cops said.

Medics rushed the victim to Brookdale University Hospital but he couldn’t be saved. His name was not immediately released.

Police took two people, one carrying a gun, into custody as persons of interest.

Man, 24, fatally shot in car on Brooklyn streetcorner

The slaying was the third murder Brooklyn’s 67th Precinct this month.

On April 20, 40-year-old bodega owner Anthony Lancaster was shot to death on E. 53th St. and Clarkson Ave.

Three days earlier, Gamaliel Oliver, 45, was dropped off at Brookdale University Hospital with a fatal gunshot to his abdomen. Police later determined he was gunned down on E. 98th St. near Lenox Road in East Flatbush about an hour earlier.

The precinct has seen a jump in homicides this year, with seven slayings through April 21 compared to five by the same point last year. Murders citywide are down more than 18 % so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.

Tata Safari Review

safari car inside

The Tata Safari is a well-known brand in the SUV market. This name was reintroduced in 2021, and we now have the first major update to the seven-seater SUV. The Safari facelift 2023 has been updated extensively in terms of looks, interior experience, and technology.

For buyers looking for a large family SUV in the Rs 25-30 lakh range, the Safari has been a strong option among rivals such as the MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, and Hyundai Alcazar.

Let’s take a closer look at the changes Tata Motors has made.

With the facelift, the basic shape and size of the Safari remains unchanged. It continues to be a large SUV, measuring nearly 4.7 metres in length and 1.8 metres in width. The updates have been made to the lighting elements, front and rear bumpers, and alloy wheels.

The new front looks more modern with the connected daytime running lights, and body-coloured elements on the grille. Tata Motors has chosen to not add chrome garnishes, which makes the new Safari look subtle and classy. The bumper design has been changed entirely and it now features LED projector headlights and LED fog lamps. There’s a functional vent in the bumper that helps in aerodynamics as well.

The  profile remains unchanged except for the new alloy wheel design. Base variants (Smart and Pure) get 17-inch alloy wheels, the mid-spec Adventure model gets 18-inch alloy wheels, whereas the top-spec Accomplished and Dark variants get 19-inch alloy wheels.

At the rear, you will notice the new taillight graphics and the new bumper.

The Tata Safari 2023 colour options are as follows:

With Tata Motors’ new approach of creating ‘Personas’ instead of variants — each variant of the Safari has a unique look and feel. The base-spec Smart/Pure variants get simple grey upholstery, the Adventure variants get chocolate brown upholstery, and the top-spec Accomplished variant features a premium white-grey dual tone combination. The Dark variant gets an all-black cabin theme.

Tata Motors has redesigned the dashboard of the Safari, making it look slimmer and luxurious. The accent on the dashboard is now slimmer, and the central AC vents are now wider. A gloss black panel runs underneath it and houses the new touch panel for the climate control and other vehicle functions.

Also new is the four-spoke steering wheel. The design is classy, and with the white-grey two-tone wrap looks upmarket too. It also gets the illuminated logo and the backlit switches that control music/calls and the instrument cluster.

In terms of fit and finish, there’s a noticeable improvement. The way the panels fit together, the consistency in material quality are positive changes.

On the space front, there’s nothing new to report. The doors open wide, and climbing into the cabin does not require effort. Do note that it’s best you install side steps if the elders in your family will be using the car. Rear seat space, as before, is more than enough for a six-footer to sit comfortably behind a six-foot-tall driver.

Tata has not added one-touch tumble to the Safari — that is a miss. So you can either ‘walk’ to the third row from the middle in the captain seat version, or recline and slide the second row seat forward. Third row space is surprisingly accommodating for adults, but for long journeys, it is best left to kids. There’s not much foot room under the second row seats, so you have to keep at least one foot out towards the centre.

A major draw of the new Tata Safari 2023 are the new features.

Dual-zone climate control:  Allows you to set separate temperatures for driver and co-driver side. Temperature can be set using the physical switches, from the touchscreen, and voice command.

Powered Driver’s Seat (with Memory):  6-way power adjust functionality. Lumbar adjustment is manual. Three memory settings are available.

12.3-inch Touchscreen:  Free-floating touchscreen with a thin bezel looks premium. Graphics are clear and crisp, and response times are quick. Interface is easy to get used to. Supports Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Can also be used to access various car functions such as climate control, powered tailgate and ambient lighting.

10.25-inch Instrument Cluster:  Has three views: 1 dial view, 2 dial view and digital. Screen is easy to read even in sunlight. Can be controlled using buttons on the steering wheel.

10-speaker JBL Sound System:  Good clarity, deep bass. It gets 13 sound profiles by AudioWorX that give you a collection of equaliser settings which you can select based on the kind of music you listen to.

360 degree camera:  Good resolution. Driver gets a clear view. Indicating left/right activates the respective camera, making lane changes and tight turns a little more convenient.

Powered Tailgate:  The boot can now be opened electrically. You can either press the switch on the boot, use the button on the key or use the app. Alternatively, you can also use the touchscreen and the button on the touch panel. You can also kick under the rear bumper for hands free operation.

Other highlight features such as front seat ventilation, powered co-driver’s seat (with Boss mode), rear seat ventilation (6-seater only), panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting have been carried over to the new Safari 2023.

Tata Motors claims to have made structural changes to the Safari to further improve safety. Standard safety features include:

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is also on offer with the Adventure+ A, Accomplished+ and Accomplished+ Dark variants.

Other features such as traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, rear collision warning and overtaking assist are also available. Tata Motors will add lane centering assist and lane keep assist as a software update in the coming months.

Performance

The Safari continues to get a single 2-litre diesel engine. There’s no change in the tuning of the engine — it continues to make 170PS and 350Nm as before. It is offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

We will recommend buying the automatic version since it adds more convenience to the drive. There’s no major difference in the way Safari drives. The engine response is satisfactory for city drives and there’s more than enough power for long highway drives. Tata Motors is now offering paddle shifters with the automatic if you want the feel of shifting gears yourself.

As before, the Safari gets Eco, City, and Sport drive modes. There are three ‘Terrain’ modes: Rough, Wet and Normal.

Ride and Handling

Wheel size has gone up, from 18 inches of the previous version to 19 inches. In this process, one would expect the ride comfort to become worse. But that’s not the case: Tata has tuned the suspension well to be comfortable and cushion harsh impacts. You can feel the surface at times at slow speeds, but there’s not much of the side-to-side rocking movement when going over broken roads. The Safari feels confident and comfortable at triple-digit speeds, making highway trips all the more enjoyable.

Tata now uses an electric power steering, which has enabled them to provide a better steering response. It is light enough for quick u-turns and parking in tight spaces inside the city. At the same time, the weight felt satisfactory at high speeds.

The Safari always had presence, comfort, and space on its side. With this update, Tata Motors has made it more desirable with a better design, upmarket feeling on the interior and a better tech package with the infotainment and ADAS.

A Michigan teenager warned her best friend to slow down before the fatal, high-speed crash that killed her, according to authorities and reports.

Ella Vece, 19, was driving at around 100 miles per hour in 18-year-old Nevaeh Downs’ Volkswagen Jetta Thanksgiving night when they tried to jump a hill in Kent County, Michigan. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and media reports.

Vece was also seriously hurt in the incident.

“It’s kids doing stupid things,” Kent County Prosecutor Christopher R. Becker told The Post. “And it ended in a tragedy.”

A recording from the scene captured Downs warning Vece to slow down because there was an oncoming vehicle, the prosecutor said. “Maybe it distracted her,” Becker added.

Downs, a recent high school graduate, was a “thoughtful, strong and caring” person, according to an online obituary and a GoFundMe page to start a scholarship fund in her name at Grand Rapids Community College, where she was a student.

Vece was charged with reckless driving causing death, a felony, but pleaded to a moving violation causing death, which is a misdemeanor, according to Becker. She is due to be sentenced in June, and could serve up to a year in prison if convicted.

The “victim’s family didn’t want us to proceed,” Becker said.

Downs’ family considered Vece “like a daughter to them,” he said. Still, the prosecutor said his office had to “hold her accountable in some way.”

As part of her plea deal, Vece lost her license for a year.

According to Becker, the hill they were trying to jump has been the site of a number of deaths in recent years.

Vece’s attorney could not immediately be reached.

Mexican police find 7 bodies, 5 of them decapitated, inside a car with messages "detailing the reason they were killed"

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 6:19 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Authorities in one of Mexico's largest cities said Friday they have found seven bodies with five of them decapitated and another completely dismembered — with a message on each corpse — in a car left in the middle of traffic on a main expressway.

Prosecutors in the central state of Puebla said all of the bodies bore messages supposedly outlining the reasons each were killed. Each was accused of having committed a particular crime, from street-level drug dealing to robbing freight trucks to extortion, prosecutors said.

"On each of the bodies, we found hand-written messages written on paper, each one detailing the reason they were killed," said Puebla state chief prosecutor Gilberto Higuera.

Higuera did not mention whether the deaths might be related to drug cartels. He said the stolen car was left in the middle of traffic on the expressway.

While vigilantes have sometimes left such messages on corpses, similar signs are far more frequently left on victims' bodies by drug cartels seeking to threaten their rivals or punish behavior they claim violates their rules.

Higuera was extremely guarded in describing the evidence, but suggested it involved "not only a dispute (between gangs) but also something related to dominance over certain people, aimed at not only domination, but recruitment."

He did not further clarify that. But some cartels in Mexico, when seeking to establish a territory as their own, will kill off rivals or any petty thieves or drug dealers they find, and leave messages to convince local residents that such activities will not be tolerated under the new cartel.

The grisly killings were striking because they occurred in the relatively affluent and large city of Puebla, just east of Mexico City. Puebla is Mexico's fifth largest city and had largely been spared the drug cartel violence affecting surrounding areas. According to data published by the Puebla state prosecutor's office, the state as a whole recorded 200 murders in the first three months of 2024.

Daily Life In Puebla

Leaving the bodies in the middle of an expressway also was unusual. Police were quickly alerted to the cadaver-laden car because it was blocking traffic on the city's main ring road.

Disturbing trend

Discoveries of mutilated bodies dumped in public or hung from bridges with menacing messages have increased in Mexico in recent years as cartels and gangs seek to intimidate their rivals.

In January, hacked-up bodies were found in two vehicles abandoned on a bridge in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz, prosecutors said. A banner left on one of the vehicles included an apparent warning message from a powerful cartel.

Last July, a violent drug cartel was suspected of leaving a severed human leg found hanging from a pedestrian bridge in Toluca, just west of Mexico City. The trunk of the body was left on the street below, near the city's center,  along with handwritten messages  signed by the Familia Michoacana cartel. Other parts of the bodies were found later in other neighborhoods, also with handwritten drug cartels signs nearby.

In 2022, the  severed heads of six men  were reportedly discovered on top of a Volkswagen in southern Mexico, along with a warning sign strung from two trees at the scene.

That same year, the  bodies of seven men  were found dumped on a roadway in the Huasteca region. Writing scrawled in markers on the corpses said "this is what happened to me for working with the Gulf," an apparent reference to the Gulf Cartel.

Car split in pieces on I-4 after driver fleeing cops at 130 mph hits semis

  • Jack Prator Times staff

The Florida Highway Patrol closed several lanes on Interstate 4 in Polk County for about eight hours after the driver of a Toyota Camry crashed into two semis while trying to evade troopers late Thursday night.

Just before midnight, a trooper spotted the Toyota headed west on I-4 near the State Road 33 exit and clocked it at 102 mph, according to a news release from the law enforcement agency.

When the trooper tried to stop the car, the driver sped up to 130 mph. Troopers pursued the Toyota for about 8 miles before it veered into a construction zone and struck two semi-trailer trucks near the Polk Parkway West exit.

The car “separated into several pieces” on impact, the release states. The two men inside, a 37-year old from Tampa and a 30-year-old from Port Charlotte, were ejected to the shoulder of the highway and suffered serious injuries. It’s unclear who was driving, according to the highway patrol.

Troopers, who found nearly $5,000 and several pounds of marijuana inside the Toyota, are still investigating the incident.

Torn pieces of the Toyota struck a Subaru Outback as it passed through the crash area. Its driver, a 43-year-old Lakeland woman, suffered minor injuries, authorities said. The drivers of two semi-trailer trucks were not seriously injured either.

Three westbound lanes were already closed due to roadway construction Thursday night, an agency spokesperson said. The crash closed the left lane of I-4, but all lanes reopened Friday at about 7:30 a.m.

Newburgh woman arrested after drugs and 585 syringes found inside car, police say

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - A 33-year-old woman from Newburgh is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond after police say they found a large amount of drugs inside her car.

Around 6:30 p.m. Friday, officers responded to the intersection of Jackson Avenue and S. Elliott Street after someone called 911 for a woman slumped over the wheel.

By the time EPD arrived, officers say the woman had the driver’s side door open with her feet hanging out.

The woman, later identified as Rebecca M. Gonzalez, told police she was fine and was not having a medical emergency.

Gonzalez reportedly said she was visiting a friend in Evansville and was about to leave to pick up her children.

According to an affidavit, Gonzalez’s pupils were dilated and she had slurred speech.

Officers say they noticed white powder around her nostrils and hands.

When asked about that, Gonzalez reportedly claimed she was eating donuts inside the car.

EPD officers say they noticed a cut straw with a white powdery substance in plain view sitting in the driver’s side door handle.

Gonzalez was detained and asked if if there was anything in the car that would cause her to go to jail, to which she said “a lot of things”.

Police say they searched the car and found cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, crack-cocaine, a morphine pill, a half-cut Clonazepam pill, marijuana, a digital scale, smoking pipes and 585 syringes.

Police note Gonzalez said “I was looking for that” after finding a wallet with meth inside of it.

Gonzalez was arrested on numerous drug charges, including Dealing Methamphetamine and Dealing Cocaine.
