Band in the USA: The Marías unveil 2022 ‘CINEMA’ tour

Editor’s Note:  With society’s gradual re-opening and our overall return to normalcy, there has been a deluge of tour announcements. Band in the USA keeps you updated on the shows you need to know about, and just who might be soon coming to town.

This past Friday (June 25) was a wild one for new music, but the album that we took with us through the weekend (alongside Johnny Dynamite’s Sleeveless ) was CINEMA , the debut effort from The Marías . The Los Angeles alternative-pop group draw as much inspiration from filmmakers like Pedro Almodóvar and Wes Anderson as they do any identifiable genre of music, and the result is an infectious 13-track LP that somehow feels retro and modern at the same time, making it quite perfect for the right now.

“We want people to feel inspired to create anything, whether it’s music or art or whatever else they’re drawn to,” says vocalist María Zardoya. “Hopefully the songs will help them to break away from real life for a while and create some kind of dream world in their heads — something like the scenes to their own little movie.”

With the album comes news of a North American CINEMA tour that gets 2022 started right. The Marías head out on 29-date tour that kicks off January 26 in Las Vegas and wraps March 12 in Los Angeles, with stops in Phoenix, Brooklyn, and Boston along the way. Tickets to all the shows are on sale now ; fire up CINEMA via Spotify and get all the dates in Insta-form below.

About The Marías

The Marías are the Grammy-nominated psychedelic-soul lovechild of Puerto Rican-bred, Atlanta-raised María Zardoya and Los Angeles native, Josh Conway. The two are joined by their closest friends, Jesse Perlman on guitar and Edward James on keys. Their undeniably intuitive musical chemistry can be heard in the band’s smooth rendezvous of jazz percussion, hypnotic guitar riffs, smoke-velvet vocals and nostalgic horn solos. There’s something undeniably sensual in their dreamlike fusion of jazz, psychedelia, funk and lounge. Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Cinema , The Marías have earned the reputation behind their impressive upward trajectory, including two Grammy nominations, a Billboard chart-topper and collaborations with some of the biggest names in Latin music, including Bad Bunny and Tainy. In the live show, The Marías are joined by Gabe Steiner on trumpet and Doron Zounes on bass. The detail that has defined their cinematic style off-stage is brought to life during their live performance as the group delivers striking visuals that beautifully compliment their dreamlike songs, creating an indisputably unique and seemingly transportive experience. Their upcoming sophomore album Submarine , set for release on May 31st, features new single “Run Your Mouth,” which garnered over one million streams in its first week of release.

María Zardoya Prepares for Re-Entry

After pulling inspiration from lockdown movie nights for the album Cinema , The Marías frontwoman is ready to tour again.

Maria Zardoya in front of a blue background wearing a black and gray silk patterned shirt

For the musician María Zardoya’s birthday in 2020, her boyfriend Josh Conway surprised her with a movie theater he’d created at his father’s house in Southern California. Zardoya—who is the frontwoman for the indie pop band The Marías with Conway, the drummer; guitarist Jesse Perlman; and Edward James on keyboards—adores movies. But like most of the world, she couldn’t visit a theater for the better part of last year. So Conway set up a “crazy projector and surround sound in his childhood bedroom,” Zardoya told me over Zoom recently. In that space, they watched “at least two or three movies a week,” including Mauvais Sang , a French thriller from the 1980s; Garden State ; Black Swan , and all of Pedro Almodóvar's films. The soundtracks moved Zardoya so deeply that she began listening to them, over and over again.

Those scores became the inspiration behind The Marías’ first full-length album, Cinema , which came out in June. Speaking from a hotel room in New York City, where Zardoya was visiting from her home in Los Angeles to attend a few fashion shows, including Christian Siriano’s, the singer described keeping the Italian composer Piero Piccioni on repeat. “Throughout this soundtrack for a movie he worked on in 1968, he used different instruments, but the same melody throughout,” she explains. “In movies, you often hear a melody at the beginning and then you hear different variations of it towards the middle and the end, too. You hear it a lot in Taxi Driver . I was really inspired by that.”

Piccioni’s influence comes through on the opening track, “Just a Feeling,” an instrumental interlude with luscious string arrangements that evoke a sweet kind of melancholy. “Just a Feeling’s” melody can be heard throughout Cinema , in different forms—through the bouncy and dark synths of “Hush” and the upbeat drums in “Un Millón,” one of two Spanish songs from the album.

The band performed the former track on Jimmy Kimmel Live on September 14; it was their network television debut. “From the beginning of The Marías, all the guys were always like, ‘When are we going to play Kimmel? When will we do Fallon?,’” Zardoya recalls, laughing. “It was always a topic of conversation for the past three or four years. I understand it’s a big deal, but I don't watch too much late night TV. I grew up watching Sabado Gigante .”

Zardoya was born in Puerto Rico and raised in Atlanta before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. She and Conway started playing as The Marías in 2015, after they met and began dating. They soon moved in together and created their first two LPs, Superclean Vol. I and Superclean Vol. II , from their apartment.

The writing process for Cinema wasn’t too different from that of the two Supercleans, Zardoya tells me. The same could not be said, however, for the band’s overall mental state. In the thick of the pandemic, each member was thrown for a loop by the “uncertainty of the day-to-day,” she says. “What changed the most was what was going on around us. We were grateful we and our families were in good health, but there was still a question of how things would play out. That was an undercurrent in all of our emotional states.” Compounding those feelings of discomfort was the fact that The Marías, which has spent years as a band on the road, could no longer tour. Still, they got together in their little pod and recorded. “We’ve been rehearsing, even through the pandemic,” she says. “We were like, ‘When are things gonna open up? Might as well be prepared for when they do.’”

View on Instagram

The payoff from that work will come to fruition when The Marías begin a new American tour for Cinema on September 22. They’ll start with the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho alongside Japanese Breakfast, Tennis, Goth Babe, and many more. At that point, when Zardoya and the band can finally bring the music to their fans live, she hopes listeners will embrace Cinema not only as a piece of sonic work, but also as a visual one. “I hope people are able to create little movies in their heads based on what is happening in their lives, and feel connected to their emotions,” she says. “I hope they feel connected to something more than the sadness of what’s happening in the world.”

Review: The Marías Hit a New High at Thalia Hall

Picture of the author

  • October 12, 2022
  • Music , Reviews

After a canceled Lollapalooza aftershow set back in August; Los Angeles indie pop band, The Marías , return to Chicago for two dreamy (and sold out!) nights at Pilsen’s glorious Thalia Hall . The Marías momentum seems to get bigger and better every time they make a stop back in Chicago; it’s almost like catching up with an old friend every few months. Thalia was acked even before the opener, Holdan , came on as fans have been anticipating this performance for a couple of months now!

Holdan flawlessly warmed up the eager crowd with his charming yet humble personality and instantly memorable bedroom-pop/folk sound. I was unfamiliar with Holdan's music prior to this night but he definitely left a positive impression not only on me but for the rest of the crowd; as they roared in an attentive applause for the up-and-coming singer/songwriter. Having only a few thousand followers and already opening for the Marías, it’s obvious the man’s got talent and the potential to blossom even further.

After Holdan ’s brief set; The Marías gathered on the dark stage as “Talk to Her” played. Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for, María Zardoya herself emerged on stage as the lights went on, performing their classic Cinema tour opener “Calling U Back.” The crowd was instantaneously starstruck. There’s a sort of grace and elegance to María, from her gorgeous stage presence to her stunning live voice. The Marías are the sort of band (in my opinion) that has absolutely no bad songs so this set was an absolute treat. They played jam after jam including their all-Spanish song “Un Millón” and their viral hit feature on Bad Bunny’s “Otro Atardecer” making the crowd extra rowdy. I adore The Marías for having songs in both English and Spanish as well as blending and mixing the two languages throughout their latest record, Cinema .

A swift mid-set pee break and brief jam session later, Zardoya came back to join her band on stage for the rest of their mesmerizing set. They snuck in a brief melody cover of “La Bamba” into their own song “Jupiter,” which flowed so well that my ears had to do a double take before realizing that this wasn’t a part of the original song. They also covered “...Baby One More Time” which at this point feels as much The Marías song as it does a Britney Spears song. I wouldn’t be opposed if the Marías were to one day decide to release a cover album or EP because they do a marvelous job at converting other songs to fit their artistic mold. Zardoya also blessed Thalia with a new song, “Run Your Mouth” which I instantly fell in love with and am really looking forward to its studio release.

Being my THIRD time seeing The Marías this year alone, It has been remarkable seeing their confidence flourish as a band and María as a performer. The Cinema tour has been quite extensive but rightfully so. Cinema being only their debut album has set the bar impressively high for debut albums moving forward. From Grammy nominations to getting featured on Bad Bunny’s album Un Verano Sin Ti, The Marías are JUST getting started. I am immensely stoked to see and hear what the band comes out with next although it's almost impossible for them to disappoint.

The Marias

On Cinema , the stellar debut album of Los Angeles-based vintage crooners The Marías , it is the distinctive ebb and flow of emotion between the band’s central duo/couple (María Zardoya and Josh Conway) that makes their mix of Latin pop, psychedelic-soul, and jazz leanings that much more enthralling. It’s what powers the dynamo of delicious sensuality, glamorous romance, and ferocious individuality that keeps alight the smokey-velvet rooms and bedrooms from which their intimate songs seem to radiate and whisper. With Zardoya under the limelight cooing passion and Conway toiling away on drums and multiple instruments — and both producing the entire album themselves from their L.A. apartment — Cinema radiates with the adoration of their love for one another.

Between Zardoya’s piercing lilt and Conway’s heady-droning, often bathed in his buzzing electronics, and their song’s windingly ardent melodies — there is an abundance of moments to fall in love with on any Cinema track. Some of the best come with their bilingual songs: like the effervescent tones of “Little By Little” (“Quiero amanecer entre tu piel de miel / Luego acariciarte hasta quitar tu sed,” Zardoya murmurs delicately); or the softly strummed “Fog as a Bullet,” where the sad wail of horns rise to gently meet her lament.

On songs like the bemoaning, shuddering-electronica of “ Calling U Back” and the dreamy longing of “All I Really Want Is You,” The Marías rhapsodize their romance into scenes of heartache; while the strobing-bass lines of “Hush” flip-the-script into a concussive rebuff of the kind of unwanted advances women can receive from men.

Groovy guitars quiver on the lush movements of “Heavy,” a melancholic piece that takes a deeper look at the struggle that comes with letting people in. The spacey soundscapes of “The Mice Inside This Room” continue The Marías lucid introspection into the personal hurdles that come with entangling yourself with another person — its gorgeous orchestral outro a soothing accent upon its already poignant atmosphere.

All of it culminates into the album’s finale “Talk to Her,” a spoken word meandering through Zardoya’s tender but incisive and kaleidoscopic lens that unravels itself to the paced crescendo of scattered and spiraling instruments. It’s the final word, a sigh that somehow covers the breadth of Zardoya’s experience as an artist, a woman, and human soul trying to balance the vulnerability love requires of us with the steeled and defiant nature we develop against a world that would keep us down — even while trying not to grow jaded and closed-off to it. “Don’t stop getting up, don’t stop getting up,” Conway offers in the chaotic but melodious soaring that ends the song — and if there ever was a perfect illumination of the spirit of Cinema , that’s it.

How much are tickets to see the marías on their ‘submarine tour’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

María Zardoya of The Marías sings in concert.

On May 31, The Marías will release their second studio album “Submarine.”

To go with the record, the Los Angeles-based quartet announced they’re hitting the road for the ‘Submarine Tour’ with special guest Automatic at music halls, theatres, ballrooms and lawns all over North America.

That includes a stop at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Thursday, Aug. 8.

The Marías can’t wait, either.

“(L)et’s dance let’s cry let’s get hot let’s get sweaty let’s get wettt, submarine tour babyyy,” the band shared on Instagram .

And if you want to be there to sing “Cariño,” “Over the Moon,” “mañana” and tracks from the forthcoming “Submarine” along with María Zardoya, tickets are available for all 25 concerts this summer.

Some are shockingly cheap, too.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find was $18 before fees on Vivid Seats.

In late 2016, The Marías formed in Los Angeles, created from a sparked romance between key members María (who goes by just her first name) and Josh Conway.

The next year, the group released their debut EP, Superclean Vol. I , a project featuring two of the band’s most beloved hits — “Only in My Dreams” and “I Don’t Know You.”

On June 25, The Marías released their debut album, CINEMA .

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by The Marías (@themarias)

The Marías are self-described as the “psychedelic-soul lovechild of Puerto Rican-bred, Atlanta-raised” vocalist María, and the native Los Angeles musician Josh Conway.

The duo write, produce, and record the music by themselves.

When on stage, The Marías are joined by guitarist Jesse Perlman, keyboardist Edward James, and trumpet player Gabe Steiner: musicians described as their “closest friends.”

The pop group made themselves known with the aforementioned EP Superclean Vol. I , and its followup, 2018’s Superclean Vol. II , as well as a handful of singles.

The Marías are also a bilingual band, with a collection of songs sung (or partially sung) in Spanish. These songs include “Basta Ya,” “Déjate Llevar,” and the loving ballad “Cariño.”

The group also makes a point to incorporate a substantial amount of bilingual songwriting on CINEMA . In total, the record features five Spanish-sung or partly bilingual tracks.

The band's tendency to write effectively mood-altering tracks is not a by-chance development.

Originally, The Marías made music for movies.

“The reason Josh and I started writing music together was because of cinema,” María told Grimy Goods . “We were connected to a music supervisor who would send us requests for music for films. We’d receive a synopsis of a scene, and then we’d write music to it within a couple of days... It taught us how to think like filmmakers.”

Foremost, The Marías made a name for themselves for their unique, smooth instrumentation — a collage of influences and cultures — and the dreamy, longing vocals of María herself.

The María-Conway songwriting duo makes for an intimate, inspired and passionate pop, neo-soul and funk project.

CINEMA was announced in April, and was introduced by the single “Hush,” a head-bopping, disco-inspired track with clean bass, an infectious chorus, and strong, driving rhythm reminiscent of the late 70s-style the group takes inspiration from.

The record opens with the subtle intro, “Just a Feeling” — a gentle soundscape of lone instrumental arrangement. Another moment of slowed, evocative instrumentation is showcased with the mid-tracklist interlude, “Hable Con Ella.”

“Just A Feeling” transitions into the more rhythm-focused pop song “Calling U Back.”

“Calling U Back” features a defiant chorus focusing on personal pursuits, challenges, while the verses see María ruminate on shaky relationships and acquaintances.

“All I Really Want Is You,” is a vivid summer ballad. The track is a loving portrayal from María, where the lead singer reminisces on a romance within the nostalgic setting of a June rainshower.

Overall, CINEMA is an album that pays homage to the group's origin of providing music for films.

Similar to how The Marías originally wrote songs to play alongside imagery, the album motions through its tracklist as if a film — each song representing varied scenes and emotions.

Listeners may take notice of the album’s knack for recurring themes. “To Say Hello” exhibits further themes of summertime as a time of transition, echoing the imagery of “All I Really Want Is You.”

“I called to say hello / take the summertime to grow,” sings María.

Album singles subsequent to “Hush” are “Un Millón” and “Little by Little,” which both arrived earlier in the month to promote the incoming record. Both singles find The Marías implementing an interest in the same bilingual songwriting.

While both tracks feature Spanish songwriting, “Un Millón” incorporates no English. Instead, the track is built on reggaeton-inspired rhythm and instrumentation that pairs seamlessly with María’s Spanish-sung verses and chorus.

In an interview with Grammy.com , María elaborated on the inspiration behind “Un Millón.”

“Being from Puerto Rico, I grew up listening to reggaeton,” María said. “The lyrics are inspired by places I would go when I was little in Puerto Rico.”

RELATED CONTENT

“Little By Little” stands out as a quiet, more paced slow-jam beside the bravado of tunes such as “Hush.” Other notable CINEMA slow jams are “Heavy” and “Spin Me Around.”

The record’s back half sees The Marías venture further into bilingual songwriting with “To Say Hello” and “Fog as a Bullet.”

CINEMA finishes with “Talk to Her”: a fitting track for the album’s film influences. The closing track primarily features a spoken-word passage from María that paints images vivid enough for cinema itself.

When CINEMA concludes, listeners are left with an album of multicultural influence — both in storytelling and instrumentation — that pays tribute to The María’s love of film while portraying their own collection of songs for listeners to navigate as if they were movie scenes.

Even before the release of their record, the indie darlings had cemented themselves as a strong undercurrent within the industry.

The group has a collection of popular and fan-cherished tracks under their belt — including covers of an array of artists and influences.

Prior to the album’s release, the group listed on Twitter all the artists they have covered; remarking how each was an inspiration for CINEMA . These influences are a wide range, including Bad Bunny, The Ink Spots, Billie Holiday, Brittney Spears and Radiohead.

Listeners may take notice of slight tonal, instrumental and vocal influences in CINEMA ’s “The Mice Inside This Room” that are reminiscent of Radiohead’s despondent “Everything in Its Right Place” from 2000’s Kid A .

The Marías’ own Radiohead cover — for the English rock group’s song “Exit Music (For A Film)” — holds particular significance in The Marías’ career, as film was vital to the band’s inception.

“If it wasn’t for… film, TV and cinema, The Marías definitely would have never existed,” María told Grammy.com .

The aforementioned Radiohead track — like early Marías recordings — was written specifically for the screen. “Exit Music (For A Film)” was written directly for the 1996 Baz Luhrmann Shakespeare adaptation, Romeo + Juliet .

For CINEMA , The Marías took film inspiration from their own favorites. This includes the likes of Wes Anderson and Pedro Almodovar.

Almodovar’s 2002 drama Talk to Her may have influenced the title for the CINEMA track of the same name. Both directors were in mind when creating the music video for “Hush.”

The visual artistry of The Marías — observed through their eclectic music videos — will also soon be seen on the stage.

They will be returning to tour life in early 2022, when the band will play over 25 shows across the U.S. between January 26 and March 12.

Tickets to The Marías’ CINEMA Tour are available now. The debut album CINEMA is available now on streaming platforms.

Probably one of the best shows I've ever gone. The energy was amazing all night from the first opener to the headliner. The first opener was very enthusiastic although she didn't really fit in my music preferences. The second opener, Paul Cherry, really blew me away. I could not believe I had never listened to such a talented and wonderful artist. I definitely went home and listened to his stuff. Now the headliner was good...actually they were amazing. I cannot describe how good they sounded. They brought an energy I had never felt in a concert and the interaction with the fans was incredible. Once the initial set was complete, the idea of having one of the band members of the Marias come out and warm-up the crowd for an amazing finale. Even had an impromptu birthday celebration! The lighting for the venue was also exceptional; complimented each artist flawlessly and made each performance that more memorable. Would definitely recommend checking out The Marias and the venue Aisle 5.

The Marias show was quite a disappointment. It was my 4th time seeing them in concert and by far the worst performance. I understand they were not the main show, but they seemed so disconnected and eager to finish the set and go home. I missed the cool outfits they usually wear, last night looked as though they were dressed for a garage rehearsal except Maria, she looked stunning as usual. They all seemed very tired(probably exhausted from touring a lot) and bored. Still a great band though, I can forgive them.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Watch Latin American Music Awards

AMC Theatres , the world’s largest cinema chain, is leaning into distribution.

The company is expanding its distribution team with a key hire and promotion, underscoring its commitment to releasing its own movies in addition to showcasing titles from traditional and independent studios. AMC Theatres launched its distribution team with the premieres of last year’s concert films, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.”

Terifay joins AMC from Fandango, where she led the integrated marketing team, and worked closely with Hollywood studios, independent content distributors, theatrical exhibitors and brand partners to drive consumer awareness and ticket sales. Prior to Fandango, she led partner marketing for Sundance Institute, Film Independent, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Los Angeles Clippers and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

AMC is bolstering the team by promoting Kevin Arnold to VP of programming promotions and partnerships, effective immediately. Arnold, who joined AMC in 2011, has risen through the ranks in the film programming department. Now, he will oversees promotional strategies that aim to drive moviegoer engagement and increase ticket sales.

“The remarkable success of AMC Theatres Distribution last fall opened an exciting new business for AMC, and we are thrilled to have Stephanie Terifay’s expertise and enthusiasm build upon the brilliant leadership of Nikkole Denson-Randolph,” said Elizabeth Frank, AMC’s chief content officer. “Through the addition of Stephanie and the much-deserved elevation of Kevin Arnold, AMC Theatres Distribution is well positioned to continue to deliver exciting and compelling content to moviegoers at AMC and across the industry domestically and internationally.”

AMC seems to be heeding the advice of its unofficial box office queen: “Shake it off.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
