An African safari is a bucket list trip for many but can present a range of logistical challenges—not the least of which is what to wear. Kitting out for the bush, after all, is a bit of a balancing act: you want to dress for the occasion, but you also don’t want to seem costume-y; you need to be prepared for the elements without sacrificing style; you need to pack light for those infamously crammed bush planes.

There are a few cardinal rules, which any safari expert will confirm, to which you should adhere. First, your color palette should blend into the scenery, so you don’t scare the animals into hiding (for that reason, you’ll also want to avoid literally loud clothing, like noisy nylon windbreakers). Think greens, browns, beiges and neutrals. Tsetse flies are attracted to black and bright blues, so leave those colors at home. White tends to get dusty from driving around on open-air safari vehicles all day. Just keep your colors and your fibers natural—cottons, linens, so forth—and you should be good.

The second major rule to consider, no matter where you’re going, is the weight of your luggage. Check with your safari company or travel agent for specific rules and regulations, but most camps require soft-sided luggage generally under thirty pounds so they can easily fit into bush planes. “The good news is that most camps offer a same-day laundry service, so you can literally wear the same thing every other day,” says celebrity stylist Sam Spector, who has been on a number of safaris. “When packing, if you keep everything within the same color story, that solves the problem of packing too many cumbersome shoes, because you can get away with bringing just one or two pairs that go with everything.”

The goal is to pack smarter, so everything goes with everything else. Now that you’re packed and ready with your safari clothing, it’s time to plan your safari shoes! This is probably going to be much easier than you think!

We recommend taking only two pairs of shoes. When it comes to picking those safari shoes, go with a pair of sneakers and flip flops (for camps, shower, and beaches). Your sneakers should be something comfortable you can wear on the truck, for occasional safari walks, and at the campsite at night if it’s cold.

However, if your safari itinerary includes walking safaris, you’ll need substantial sturdy safari shoes. For multi-day treks through the jungle, you’ll want to bring sturdy hiking boots . But for the occasional day trip, regular all-terrain sneakers or hiking shoes will work as safari shoes.

Ideally, you’ll want your safari shoes to be waterproof and easy to clean in case they get muddy or otherwise dirty.

I know we’ve mentioned merino wool a lot, but just as with the rest of our suggested safari clothing, merino wool socks are perfect to pair with your safari shoes because you can rewear them multiple times without having to wash them.

Because you may be moving locations every night, you won’t have much time to wash your safari clothing, so it’s best if you bring fast drying fabrics or clothing you can re-wear easily.

Safari Travel Tip: Most of the time, you’ll be popping a squat on the side of the road, so a female urinary device or even a flowy skirt might be helpful if you’re not crazy about the idea of flashing your goods. Don’t forget your antibacterial hand wipes!

To go along with your safari clothing choices, you’ll need a few accessories.

Hats are great because they can help shield you from the sun and hide unwashed hair. But while hats are a definite must, but that doesn’t mean they have to be unattractive.

When it comes to your hair, you will want to keep it covered and pulled back in a ponytail or bun so it doesn’t get tangled in the wind and full of dirt from the road. We have a few suggestions for some hair accessories that will help keep high maintenance hair on the down low during your safari tour.

You definitely will want to have a female urinary device , because the only bathroom breaks you get are in the bush. Finding adequate coverage can be a challenge, so you might also need to get comfortable with flashing your bum at other women on the trip!

You’ll want to bring a travel towel so that it can dry quickly when you’re constantly on the go. You should also pack any prescriptions you might need along with mosquito repellent … don’t forget that! And while it’s not exactly a toiletry, you’ll want a collapsible water bottle , too!

If you’re going to go the carry-on only route, make sure you cut back on your toiletries. It’ll help with TSA if you put all of your liquids in a Ziploc bag, following the 3-1-1 rule !

The Dos and Don’ts of Safari Clothing Packing

Packing for your African safari can seem overwhelming, so let’s finish off by going over our main dos and don’ts when it comes to getting together your safari gear and planning your safari attire!

What should you not wear on safari?

What you shouldn’t wear for an African safari depends highly on the actual trip type that you’re participating in. An overland trip that touches on a variety of countries is going to mean different must-haves from a short safari to Kruger Park that’s smack in the middle of a longer trip.

If your African safari trip is long, you’re going to want to focus on making comfortable, practical safari clothing a priority. But if you’re headed on a short three-day trip, you can definitely get by with wearing regular clothes.

But for both trips, we highly recommend that you DO NOT wear a romper on a safari — three days, seven days or otherwise. We know that we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s such an important note that we want to talk about it in a little more detail!

When you’re on an overland safari trip, it’s common place to simply pull over on the side of the road to go to the bathroom — in public — as there really aren’t bathrooms along the way. The reason why we stress that you shouldn’t wear rompers is due to the fact that going to bathroom in a romper means taking all of your clothes off to go to the bathroom.

While you might be able to find a somewhat “discreet” spot in the pushes to pop a squat, you’ll still be pulling off your entire romper in public and it’s much harder to attempt to conceal the top and bottom half of your body at the same time. It’s much easier to focus on covering your backside.

We know you’ll thank us for this advice later!

What colors should you wear on safari?

As exciting as it is to experience nature in its rawest form, you don’t have to immerse yourself to the extent that your safari clothing completely blends in with the foliage and desert itself. We can leave that for the Hollywood movies!

With that in mind, the best colors for safari clothes include:

• Olive green

A tip for picking the best color for your safari clothing is to go with colors that are inspired by nature. Measure your clothes with the image above, if they’re in the same tone, intensity and relatively the same color they’re good to go. You’re looking to blend in, but you don’t have to look like Crocodile Dundee or wear full tactical gear!

What color should you not wear on safari?

If you’ve done your safari clothing due diligence, chances are you’ve come across something that tells you not to wear bright colors. It seems like a strange request, but it’s recommended that you choose neutral colors because you don’t want the animals to see you — if they do they might be scared off!

Stick to neutral colors but avoid white because your safari clothes are bound to get very dirty, especially if you’re camping, and white will show it all!

Can you wear black on safari?

Wearing black on safari is not recommended. Black clothing attracts mosquitoes, and you’ll want to avoid that as much as possible to keep your trip its most enjoyable!

If you do end up bringing some black pieces, keep them to a minimum and opt for lightweight fabrics wherever possible!

On August 2, 2022, Just got back from South Africa; Cape Town, Cape Winelands, then off to safari at Kruger; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Botswana, Okavango Delta! It was a great 12-women trip, Women, Wine and Wild. I researched and looked at this site for everything from suitcases, carry-ons, cross-body bags, packing, lists of clothes, shoes, jackets, underpinnings, toiletries, hats, scarves, etc.; for varying types of travel, city, winelands, safaris, and Travel Fashion Girl came through on all fronts – I was ordering things left and right even in the last few days and got it all together and had the most wonderful trip. I may have taken a little too much, but I really used most everything I brought so it all worked out. But as they say, less is more; I wouldn’t bother even with a little heel for dinners out if it’s only a few night in a city. I wouldn’t take as many pants as those can be interchangeable pretty easily, especially if you bring a few blouses/tops. For chilly mornings or evenings, a lightweight puffer jacket was perfect. And scarves are perfect to help mix it all up and really be able to wear the same things with different scarves. TFG is an amazing place to go for everything travel; I love it!

Just got back from our 3 week honeymoon on safari in Kenya and Tanzania including a week in Zanzibar – these packing lists from TFG were so helpful for knowing what to expect and helping to minimize how much luggage to bring. Definitely recommend carry on backpack for this trip to fit in the small trunks of the land cruisers and for small airplanes (we took one with only 12 seats!)

Someone recommended we take soft travel bags to fit onto the small airplanes which I would NOT do again. Due to their weight, it made the grueling trek through airports a painful experience 😣 Instead, we would have preferred rolling, carry-on luggage. My two-cents, but unless you travel lightly, soft bags aren’t the way to go for this type of trip. Anyone else?

Loved this packing list! I only went on a two day safari but this was immensely helpful with helping me choose the right clothes to pack for a conference plus my safari outing.

We’re just back from a Safari in Zimbabwe , Botswana and Zambia And I found previous posts on Safari clothing on this site invaluable! And def no all in ones ! We stopped for loo breaks whenever needed and took it in turns to go round to the back of the truck so it was totally private and discreet! I took very thin summer dresses for the middle of the days and was really glad of these . And we definitely needed warm things for early morning … I had a cashmere snood I was so thankful for … I could pull it up over the back of my head . Also silk gloves ! And it was the best holiday we have ever had !

Just came back from a trip that included: Capetown; The Winelands; Vic Falls; Chobie game drive in Botswana; self drive through Kruger; and a luxury resort/safari game drive; — oh yeah and we had a two day stop over in Doha (!) So we had temps that ranged from 50-65 degrees in Capetown/Winelands; 55-85 in Kruger, and 98-112 degrees in Doha (!)

So one big thing to consider is that the weather is vastly different depending where you go: Capetown in July is Winter, which is chilly and drizzly, can be windy and stormy, BUT because it’s their winter, it was the best time to go on Safari on the other side of South Africa, which was Great Kruger National Park, so just remember, your season might not be their season. Best safari pants I brought was North Face Hybrid Yoga/cargo pants in olive — stretchy, quick dry, had tons of pockets, but felt like leggings. Also the lululemon “Smooth Departure” packable rain coat. Ultra light, and looks good while on safari or in the city. Lastly, even if you go during a “light bug” season, I would recommend at least one Insect Shield SPF long sleeve top (that can be also rolled up) and at least two pairs of their socks. Long sleeve shirts that have SPF can keep you cooler than a t-shirt because the African sun is HOT!! And even if you come from a sunny state (Like CA, as I do) your arms can get really get burnt. Also, a first layer underlayer (for cold) can do double duty. I wore it over my bathing suit while I was going into Devil’s Pool (Victoria Falls), and it really saved me because the water was COLD!! Because it was dry-wicking, it dried almost immediately. Also, just a note: our safari guides would NOT have recommended wearing that bright turquoise jacket that’s pictured in the photo (especially on a walking safari) — maybe it was more “neutral” looking in real life?

YES it gets COLD, even in summer! Keep in mind that some local flights out into the bush have a weight limit on luggage so double check on this- they’re strict! Also, some safari’s do laundry daily so that helps cut down on what you need. I survived a 2 week trip with 2 pairs of leggings, 1 hiking pant from Athleta (cute!), 1 pr of shorts, 5 shirts, (mix of button ups, tanks and athletic type t’s) a fleece and a windbreaker. Don’t overdo the shoes either! One pair of sneaker types and one pair of sandals is fine!

Great article! Having lived in Africa for the past nine years, I might also advise against wearing shorts. Most of Africa is significantly more conservative than many Western countries, and the only people I ever see in shorts are the tourists and, at times, wearing anything cut above the knee can attract unwanted attention from males- an unfortunate but true reality

Hi Alex, Emily’s comment about shorts also might include strappy tank tops and leggings. Your comment about wearing sports bras was right on. Safari trucks have lousy shocks and you will be bounced around. A scarf is useful for keeping dust out of you eyes and mouth.

We are going to Cape Town for 4 days then winery for 4 days, safari for 5 then victoria falls. Will it look silly if I wear kaftans for dinners? And what about days for shopping and touring in towns? I can’t imagine having only a carry on and not a variety of clothing.

If you’d normally wear kaftans to dinners at home then you should wear them while you’re traveling too 🙂

No blue clothing, as it (like black) attracts mosquitos. Bring decent underwear, something you won’t be embarrassed for camp staff to wash by hand, as I found one fellow doing. You’ll wear the long-sleeve shirt in the jeep during the afternoon so you don’t get sunburned. Unless you’ll hike, closed-toe sandals are good for everything. I wore clogs for the plane and around camp. Glad I brought a fleece jacket for cold mornings. I brought older clothing and left it. In Tanzania, I left sneakers with a camp staffer who was extremely grateful, even though they were one size too big for him. To my safari driver went my bathing suit and robe (someone will wear them), fleece jacket, and old Tevas. I suggest a headlamp, which you may need (tents and hotels were short on light).

I would add one trash bag to the packing list. In the morning game drive on our last day of the safari, it rained cats and dogs on us, and we got soaked (we all had rain ponchos on but they didn’t help much). Thankfully, someone had trash bags to spare, so we could put the wet clothes in the bag and put in the luggage without everything else getting damp.

Just got back from an Africa safari, and here is my recommendations: 1.) Take Sunscreen! I burned one half of my face sitting in the safari vehicle one day…so I switched sides to burn evenly the next. 2.) A hat would help combat problem #1. 3.) Don’t waste space on hair dryers or makeup etc. No one in the bush cares. 🙂 Bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste and call it done. 4.) I only brought hiking tennis shoes. I longed for a pair of flip flops on the long days in a car. 5.) It can get quite chilly at night. Bring long pants for sleeping if you are staying in a tented camp. I was on my honeymoon so pajama’s wasn’t a top priority when packing…wish it had been! Lol! 6.) Bring a clean outfit for the plane ride home and put it aside. Coming out of the bush after a week of bucket showers you feel dirty enough. 7.) Last and most important: Don’t pack anything that resembles food in a tented camp. I had a granola bar in my bag and we had a honey badger break into our tent while we were gone. It ate the granola bar, chewed up all my underwear, and then took a big poop in my husbands suit case!

At least one knee length skirt or dress is a must if you are going to be exploring outside of the parks at all. A sarong also goes a long way and I have a nice knit hat I alway bring along in the winter. Also, the first time I traveled to Tanzania I made the mistake of thinking I would only need camping gear and spent the whole time wishing I had a cute top with me. I highly recommend bringing an outfit you can wear to dinner or a club. Overall, great tips! Thanks!

I’m off to fashionable Dubai & Iran after overlanding in Africa, so I’m trying to figure out a way to keep my suitcase light AND have enough clothes that are fashionable and practical! I reckon a few colourful scarves may be the way to go, and one long black skirt as well as the above.

I am not sure if you have already gone trekking or not, but I might consider changing your black skirt to tan, beige, grey or even light pink. I spent two years in and out of Dubai and Afghanistan….you will constantly be trying to clean your black skirt, the sand is more like a talcum powder and sticks to everything, also the dark colours are hot! You will definitely want something feminine/girlie though and the scarves are an excellent idea! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

As always, love, love, love the lists! In all parts of Africa, it’s best to always err on the side of modesty and cameo prints should always be avoided. On safari, it would be worth spending the extra money for clothing that is sunscreen rated/treated with bug repellent.

What to wear on safari

When it comes to dressing for safari , there are two golden rules to follow; the first is layering – opting for lightweight pieces that can be layered up or down depending on the climate in and out of the shade. You’ll want to keep skin covered up (for sunburn and bug deterring reasons) but in loose, breezy materials such as linen so you don’t overheat. The second gold rule is colour – it might seem cliche, but stick to a neutral, earthy colour palette – dark colours can attract pesky tsetse flies in Africa, while bright colours could attract larger animals. 

Linen shirts

These will become your new best friend. Wear by itself or over a tank, buttoned up in the evenings or with rolled sleeves in the sunshine. Pack two or three in stone, brown, or green, or for added style points look for an understated detail like this pale stripe version by Arket.

Utility trousers

A great staple for any safari trip, a good pair of hardy utility trousers in a lightweight fabric such as linen or canvas will see you through any trip. Look for options is khaki green or tan to pair with everything, and with big cargo pockets – always in style, and surprisingly handy.

Make sure to pack a couple of base layers. A white or cream tank top to go under shirts or jackets is a must.

Depending on your trip, you might find yourself needing an overnight bag – a lot of spots will just let you take the essentials into your sleeping quarters, leaving your luggage in a separate lock up. Keep pyjamas and sleep essentials in a separate weekender bag (and be sure to leave any food or scented items in your main suitcase). For on the go, just a small pocket bag or belt bag will do – and under no circumstances be tempted to pack a snack. 

In addition to a lightweight shirt, a good option for evenings is an overshirt – a slightly heavier version that ticks the box of a jacket and a shirt in one. A classic cotton option will see you through the journey, or up the style stakes in Loewe’s take on utility chic.

You’ll need a good pair of sunglasses for keeping your eyes peeled for game under the sun. A chunky square-framed pair is best at blocking out the rays, or opt for a classic Aviator style to recreate Sam Neill’s iconic Jurassic Park double-take (trust me, you’ll want to). 

A hat is an absolute must-pack when you’re going to be under the sun all day. A trusty cap will keep the rays off your face, but we can't resist the sartorial appeal of the Jacquemus bucket hat. 

Walking boots

Footwear can be tricky – you won’t need ‘walking boots’ per se, as you’ll spend most of the time being ferried around, but you’ll definitely need comfy, breathable, boots, with a high top – sand and dust will get everywhere otherwise – ready for jumping in and out of Jeeps. Opt for a desert style boot in canvas, and look for nifty details such as built in insect repellent, included in this pair from Craghoppers.

A scarf is a great all-purpose accessory. Wrapped around the neck to keep the dust out, over the head for added sun shade, wrapped around luggage handles, or as a make-shift belt. A lightweight linen scarf is a great option.

What To Wear On A Safari: Fashionable Safari Clothes

wear this there: what to pack for safari and everything else you should know before your trip

when i was first planning my outfits for safari i took a little trip to rei and spent like $1,000 on things i didn’t actually need (thank god for their generous return policy). fun fact about me: i always freak out before every trip and order a million things, i usually don’t need and then return half of them and the other half doesn’t show up in time, so it’s generally always a disaster zone until the moment i hop on that uber heading to the airport and can finally relax about packing, because, well, there’s not really any turning back at that point. that’s sort of why i started this blog, to hopefully prevent you from all of the stress i put myself through. long story long, i’ll go ahead and tell you now, no, you don’t need three pairs of waterproof, upf protection, sweat wicking, cargo, zip-off pants in different colors. you’re not hiking kilimanjaro (well you might be, but this style guide is not for that). you are literally just sitting in a car for hours a day (in the best way possible of course).

dressing for safari is actually a lot like dressing for work, just trade in your heels/loafers for some hiking boots and throw on a safari chic hat and you’re ready to roll. seriously, the easiest recipe for a safari outfit, is a pair of khaki pants and a button down. just like your classic corporate job uniform, except make it fashion (meets steve irwin). so read on for all of the details on what to pack for safari and avoid wearing zip off pants.

breaking from my usual long winded blogs where i talk a lot about our trip and experience (which, sidenote, was one of the most incredible, if not the most incredible, trips i’ve ever taken in my entire life) this time i’ll just focus on exactly everything you need to know about going on safari and packing for safari. we did our safari in the masai mara in kenya. so this post is particularly helpful for masai mara and serengeti (which are actually the same park just split by the borders of kenya and tanzania). this guide should still work for safari in any park though.

i’ll start with faq’s (or at least all the questions i had, which were a lot):

1. for how long should you go on safari?

we went for 4 days. i could have stayed for a week or even longer because i loved it so much, but 4 still felt like enough. we saw the big five and pretty much every other african animal i know about from the lion king, so i felt complete. some people get “safari fatigue” and 3-5 days is usually the recommended amount of time.

2.  where should you stay on safari?

this question is very hard to answer, as it depends on a variety of factors; budget, location, personal comfort necessities, where you are flying into, etc. first determine your budget and personal comfort necessities. some people are fine with a less glamorous safari experience and some people want to go all out. either way, going on safari is usually not cheap, so make sure you know ahead of time exactly how much you are able to spend. note: safari lodge pricing is almost always based on a per person per night charge. once you have a ballpark idea of your nightly budget per person, start researching based on that. i looked at tripadvisor, booking.com, conde nast traveler, telegraph, tripsavvy, and many small blogs as well. once i narrowed it down a bit, i looked at instagram, reviews on all of the major booking sites, and factored in travel time from the nearest airstrip. most safari lodge websites will tell you how long it takes to get from the camp to the nearest airstrip.

we ended up choosing entumoto safari camp , a boutique luxury camp in a conservancy just on the outskirts of the masai mara national reserve ( we flew into nairobi and then took a bush plane to the closest airstrip). i was drawn to entumoto from website photos and reviews, but also the price. it seemed like such an amazing deal for a luxury safari camp, i was almost afraid it was too good to be true. but it turned out to be even more amazing than i dreamed. everything about entumoto safari camp was basically perfect. it was not the highest-end lodge out there, but it was intimate, personalized, and luxuriously rustic. it still felt indulgent without being over the top. our guide, abraham, a masai elder, was one of the most amazing human beings i have ever met while traveling, plus he was so knowledgeable about the land, culture, and animals and seemed to always know how to find even the most elusive of creatures. beyond, abraham, the entire staff was incredible! we truly enjoyed every moment there!

additionally, the camp is dedicated to sustainability and giving back to the masai culture and land. they’ve recently installed solar power energy grids as well as a drip irrigation system for their onsite organic garden, that helps conserve water and increase production of the local organic goods they use for the meals you, as a guest, enjoy. their commitment to ethical tourism in kenya is one of the most important reasons i chose entumoto and the connections i made with the staff, who i now call my friends, is why i will keep going back. also, it’s gorgeous. (ok, turns out i’m still being long winded… there’s just so much to share!)

3. do i need vaccinations, and if so, when should i get them and how/where?

yes, most likely you will need vaccinations for traveling to most countries in africa. we went to kenya and tanzania and i had to get 5 different immunizations. important to note: if you are flying into tanzania from kenya then they require you to have a yellow fever vaccine in order to enter the country. you should start your vaccines at least 4-6 weeks before your trip, but each country and vaccines vary, so make sure you look into this at least 10 weeks out so you’re prepared and can schedule an appointment. we went to passport health. they have offices nationwide in the u.s. and were very knowledgeable, helpful, and reasonably priced. they were able to advise exactly what vaccines were needed for going to each country and made me feel a lot more confident in making sure i was protected. i highly recommend them. also note, the price of vaccines can add up quickly, so make sure to calculate this into your overall budget. mine roughly cost around $600, but i hadn’t been to africa or s.e. asia before, so i had to get everything. my boyfriend’s vaccines only cost around $350 because he mostly just needed boosters. you’ll need to take your immunization pamphlet with you on your trip to prove you’ve had some of these vaccinations in order to enter certain countries.

4. do i need a visa?

most likely, yes. we got ours online through the embassy, but there are multiple websites. you can also get one upon arrival at the airport, however, i’ve heard this can take a lot of time depending how busy they are. make sure to bring some copies of passport size photos along with your passport if you do this.

5. will there be bugs?

yes, there are bugs, but as noted above, i literally didn’t see any in the masai mara and didn’t get any mosquito bites. it’s pretty high elevation there and relatively dry, so this is part of the reason. kruger is lower elevation and more buggy. you should still bring deet no matter where you go (try to only spray on your clothes not directly onto skin) or another type of strong bug spray and i still recommend malaria medication. it did seem slightly unnecessary for our time on the masai mara, but we definitely needed it for when we went to zanzibar. bottom line, better safe than sorry right?!  one unfortunate side effect of some malaria medicine is indigestion/diarrhea. i know this is not a very glamorous topic, but it’s real life. so definitely bring pepto bismol/tums and maybe even ask your doctor ahead of time for anything else they recommend, as it can be quite unfortunate to experience this while on a game drive.

6. what if i want to bring more clothes than what fits in the 15 kg weight limit for the safari planes?

if you’re going elsewhere, such as zanzibar or the seychelles post safari, you’ll likely want to bring more clothes for that leg of your trip. we went to zanzibar after our safari for some relaxing days on the  beach – which was amazing by the way. we stayed in pongwe and the beach was the most insane, gorgeous beach i’ve ever seen. check out my full blog on zanzibar here !

anyway, i was able to fit all of my clothes for safari and the beach into one bag and hand luggage under 15 kgs. sometimes i still can’t believe that’s true, but it is. so, if you follow my packing guide, you’ll be fine. but if you want more options, then there are solutions.

• if you are flying in and out of the same city, such as nairobi, and have time in between your flight from nairobi to your beach destination, then most hotels will store your luggage for you. so say you bring two bags (one for safari and one for beach) and you fly into nairobi and stay there for a night before heading to the bush, you can ask your hotel to store your beach luggage for you until you return from safari. your itinerary would , of course have to allow you to have enough time to go back to the hotel to pick it up before your flight out.
• or most airports have luggage lockers where you can store your bags. so this is an option, but make sure you double check ahead of time because some of the smaller airports might not offer this.
• also important to note, not all bush planes have such strict weight limits. it largely depends on where you are and your resort/lodge etc. so most importantly, talk to your safari lodge ahead of time and they can help guide you on the restrictions.

one other note: the airplanes to the major beach airports are usually bigger than the bush planes, so you don’t need to worry about the super strict weight limits for that leg of the trip.

7. you may be thinking, this all sounds like so much work, should i just book through a travel agent?

when i first started planning our trip, i seriously was tempted to get a travel agent because it all felt overwhelming, but honestly, it’s totally doable on your own and you’ll save yourself a good amount of money if you’re willing to put in a little work.  

8. customs: how long do i need to plan for customs at airports?

we flew from nairobi, kenya to the keekarok airsrtrip out of wilson airport. we got there pretty early (i think two hours ahead of time and had a lot of time to kill). i’d say you’d be fine with an hour and a half just to be safe.

then, post safari we flew back into nairobi and directly out to stone town in zanzibar. this was another easy flight customs wise and did not need a ton of time before our flight (one and half hours should be plenty).

flying out of nairobi back to the u.s. was a completely different story. the security getting into the nairobi airport is pretty crazy. there were four different security checks. 1: driving into the airport you have to exit your taxi/uber and go through a metal detector situation while your car is searched. 2: upon entering the airport they have baggage x-ray scans. 3: the standard passport and security checkpoint we’re all used to. 4: at the gate we had to go through one final security check.

so needless to say, get there EARLY. we almost missed our flight. i would recommend at least 3 hours maybe even 4 to be safe.

9. getting around nairobi.

uber is available in nairobi and felt safe but the maps don’t work very well, so we got lost multiple times while in ubers. our taxi also got lost on the way to the airport… like whattt???? he was literally pulling over on the highway asking people for directions (majorly stressful). maybe this is just a general problem in nairobi? or we had bad luck? either way, i recommend budgeting extra time for getting around.

here is everything you need to pack for safari with a breakdown of different options at every price point. in parenthesis i’ve included the qty you should bring. again, my trip was for 4 days. note: most camps offer laundry service, so keep this in mind.

complete safari packing list:

hiking boots (0- 1 pair)

you don’t necessarily need hiking boots, unless you’ll be partaking in a walking safari, but even then, you could use sturdy tennis shoes. if i’m being honest, i brought mine mostly to look the “safari part”  – but they were great and comfy and i was happy i had them. i recommend a very breathable pair, nothing too heavy. i also wanted a waterproof pair because we were technically going toward the end of the rainy season, but it actually only rained for like 15 minutes one day. so it’s really up to if you want to bring a pair of these. if you do, i recommend wearing them on the plane, so they don’t contribute to your luggage weight, which is restricted to only 15 kg including hand luggage.

sandals (1 pair)

you need some comfy shoes for when you’re in camp. For sandals, I recommend a comfy pair of casual slides with a slightly thicker sole, just as long as they aren’t cardboard thin in case you step on a bramble or something. Also, you should only wear your sandals during the daytime when you can see where you’re walking and can watch out for any tiny critters. If you’re headed to the beach post safari, you might want to pick a pair that will work for that too. I did bring 2 pairs of sandals (the tan leather tevas below for camp) and a very thin/lightweight pair of white slides for the beach (both of these and my tennis shoes fit in my bag and I was underweight – note: I wore my hiking boots on the plane).

tennis shoes ( 1 pair)

as noted above you can just bring tennis shoes instead of the hiking boots, especially if you’re not going during rainy season. i wore my tennis shoes around camp at night. in total i brought 2 pairs of sandals, 1 pair of tennis shoes, and 1 pair of hiking boots and everything fit in my duffel and was underweight for the flight. i would not bring a pair of white canvas shoes (i.e. supergas or chucks), because those will get dirty from all of the dust, but you could get away with white leather. i include some dad shoes, but only bring these if you’re not bringing hiking boots and can wear them on the plane, otherwise they take up too much room in your bag.

white button-up (1)

this is a must bring item for any safari. it’s looks the part, plus is so versatile and good for layering. If you get a longer one it can double as swim cover up for the pool at camp or the beach if you’re heading there after your safari. it goes with everything. i would wear mine over a tank top or lightweight tee and under a vest or flannel for the cold mornings. but as the sun rises you’re going to want to peel off those layers.

green button-up (0-1 choose between green or chambray)

so i basically just brought a bunch of button-ups for safari. sorry in advance for my lack of creativity. but they seriously were perfect for the trip. great for layering, like noted above and looked cute with the pants i brought and recommend below. as you’ll notice, i brought almost all neutrals. one, because they are easy to mix and match and two, because i had read that bright colors (especially red) scare the animals. post safari, i’ve realized this is just a myth or a truth that is no longer true… our masai guide wore red everyday and we saw alllll the animals and got quite close to them in fact.

chambray (0-1 choose between green or chambray)

chambray shirts are a classic that were perhaps overdone in 2012 but are now making a comeback (sort of, i might be making that up) but they look good on safari and that’s that.

t-shirts (2-3)

bring t-shirts for layering. i brought three (could’ve gotten away with just two). If you get hot easily, you might want to bring a sweat wicking athletic one. i brought one of those and two cotton ones and those were fine for me as well. i wore these under my button-ups on morning drives and then usually late morning it would be hot enough that i would take off the button-up and just go with the tee. i recommend v-necks for layering but crew is fine too. i include both athletic options with tech material and upf and just simple cotton options, which worked fine for me.

tank tops (2)

read what i wrote about t-shirts above and apply it to tank tops. these are good for layering for the afternoon drives when it’s hotter out. i brought two.

i didn’t bring cute shorts (just an athletic running pair), but i so wish i did! in my head, i thought i shouldn’t wear shorts much because the protection on my legs was needed (mostly for bugs and walking in the bush), but i kid you not, i did not see a SINGLE bug on our entire safari trip and we only did one bush walk, the rest of the time you are just sitting in a car for hours and really don’t need pants). shorts would be best worn on the afternoon game drives, as the early mornings are very cold.

romper/jumpsuit (1)

i debated including a romper/jumpsuit, but it’s a pretty cute look for safari. maybe not the most versatile and a pain in the ass to go to the bathroom in, which would be an even bigger annoyance out in the bush when you’re “marking your territory” in the wilderness, but if you’re willing to sacrifice for fashion, then here are some cute options! rompers for afternoon drive, bring a jacket in case you stay out until sundown. jumpsuits for early morning game drives.

green pants (1-2: either 2 green and 1 khaki pair or 2 khaki and 1 green pair)

a cheap pair of pants from h&m will do just fine, or you can buy a trendy pair from revolve that would look cute for work or a night out with a crop top post safair. green pants are the perfect safari look. i brought two pairs: one slightly thicker pair for colder morning game drives and one lightweight pair for full day game drives. just make sure that what you bring is breathable, don’t  bring anything that is a heavy denim or thick khaki fabric.

khakis (1-2: either 2 green and 1 khaki pair or 2 khaki and 1 green pair)

i just brought one pair of these. fun fact: they were actually a pair of work slacks from banana republic i already had. i ordered a cuter pair a la the options i outline below but they didn’t arrive in time. i literally always wait until the last minute to order things for trips and normally have a breakdown the day before i’m leaving when i realize some things might not arrive in time. does anyone else do this? … anyway, i wore them twice, once with a white button down and once with a green button down and they worked out very well for me.

while you’re out in the bush, you’re probably going to want to be somewhat practically dressed. but let’s be honest, that can get old. so go ahead and spice things up at camp if you dare! (why am i talking like an 80 year old woman?… it is 3 am – my only excuse) anyway, here are some cute options to wear while you’re lounging around, sipping on wine and reading a book in between game drives or out for a beautiful sundowner. most people in camp will probably still be in their practical outfits, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do you and look fabulous. note: evenings do tend to get cold, so bring a blanket from camp (most camps provide these masai blankets when you venture out) or your fleece to put on post photo sesh if you take a chill. (not sure why i said “take a chill” is that a british phrase? the british love safaris).

dresses (1)

safari is often a once in a lifetime experience, so, by all means, you should definitely bring one fabulous dress with you for a candlelit dinner at camp. (in a tragic turn of events, my dress was also delayed, along with my cute safari pants, so i had to settle for a jumpsuit i already had which was fine, but i did not get that amazing photo i dreamed about). so it looks like safari will have to be at least a twice-in-a-lifetime experience for me.

i debated bringing a vest with me, but ended up being so glad i did. they’re nice to have for the mornings and evenings, when it’s chilly out and bonus: i love how they look on safari!

you definitely need to bring a lightweight jacket for the mornings and evening. a fleece is perfect. here are some options. i brought my patagonia better sweater and it is the perfect weight. i would layer it with my vest on colder days.

rain coat (0-1)

i brought a raincoat but never used it, even though we went during the end of rainy season. So, it’s up to you if you want one just in case or not. a lot of camps have rain ponchos and umbrellas for guests to use.

swimsuit (1)

most camps and all luxury camps will have a pool. there’s nothing better than taking a dip in the middle of a hot day in africa. here are some cute suits that i think are perfect for safari.

you’ll also want a coverup for camp when heading to and from the pool. a fun pair of wide leg pants is a great option, or you can use a longer white button up as a cover up and double time for game drives!

scarf/handkerchief (2)

scarves/handkerchiefs tied around your neck with a button-up or a simple tee are so safari chic. plus, it gets really dusty driving around out in the bush, so they’re nice to have to wrap around your face to filter out the dust.

hat with chin strap (1-2)

a rugged fedora instantly makes you look more like indiana jones and who doesn’t want that adventure hero vibe for a trip to africa. surprisingly (or maybe not… it was to me) it gets super windy driving around in the safari vehicles (ours was wide open – no glass windows). so it’s important to have a hat with a tie (chin strap) so your hat doesn’t blow off.

sunglasses (2)

as already mentioned it gets super windy and dusty on game drives. my eyes were so red and irritated by the end of the trip. luckily for you, shield sunglasses are having a serious moment and are the perfect solution for protecting your eyes (i so wish i had brought some). the bigger the sunglasses the better for safari. here are some of my top picks. also, bring hydrating eye drops with you (note: i will be doing a specific post on toiletries you need for safari in the next couple of days).

duffle bag (1)

most bush planes (what you have to take from the more major airports out into the nature reserves where the safari camps are) have very strict luggage policies since they are so small. a lot of them do not allow hard-sided bags with wheels so you have to bring a large soft-sided duffel or backpack. additionally, most have strict weight limits of 15 kg INCLUDING your hand luggage (i.e. small backpack or large purse – i recommend just taking a day back no purse necessary). this weight limit seriously stressed me out. but it ended up being fine. i was able to fit everything i’ve mentioned above plus my outfits for our beach trip to zanzibar post-safari. so, if you follow my packing list you should be fine (note: i will be doing a simplified safari packing checklist in a few days). also, as i always recommend wear your heaviest layers on the plane. i took a 60 L capacity duffle. i first packed everything into a 40 L (the grey herschel duffel listed below) and everything fit, but it was a tight squeeze and i knew we would want to buy some things there.

day pack (1)

as noted above, there is really no reason you need to bring a large purse to africa. i brought a small rei day pack and a very small cloth clutch for any of my purse needs (which weren’t many). the day pack is perfect to carry all of your essentials on the international flight and keep under your seat, plus once on safari, i brought it in the vehicle with me everyday to hold some necessities (hand wipes, kleenex, extra charger, etc.) and to stash my extra layers once it got hot out.

we brought our nikon d5600 dslr and one smaller zoom lens but not a huge telephoto lens and it was fine for us. although there were a couple of times when i wish we had one, but most of the time our guide got so close to the animals that we didn’t even need a zoom at all. you can also get add on lenses for your iphone/samsung (including a telephoto one), which is a great option for less serious photographers and much lighter weight!

some camps provide these, but if not, they’re really nice to have

Stylish outfits for an African safari adventure, using versatile basics

 When I booked a dream trip to Africa , the thought of planning what to wear on safari was daunting. It was my first trip to Africa and I’d be flying between safari camps in Botswana on little bush planes. That meant strict luggage limits; I had no choice but to pack light.    

In the past, I’ve traveled light by creating capsule wardrobes — picking clothes in colors that mix and match to create many outfits, but fit in a small bag. I decided to use the same approach for my African safari attire to create simple safari style.

What to Wear on an African Safari

My safari was a 6-day adventure in Botswana and I visited in March, toward the end of the Southern Africa summer, also known as green season. At this time of year, the nights weren’t as cold as during winter, but still chilly. And daytime temps went as high as 100 Fahrenheit! So I had to dress for both hot and chilly temps. 

If you’re like me, the 5:30 am wake-up for the morning game drive will feel very early. You’ll want getting dressed to be as simple as possible. So  I chose a palette of neutrals — green, tan, beige and brown. That made it quick and east to get dressed; everything worked with everything else. My only patterned piece was a little scarf.

Deciding what to pack was also dictated by luggage limits — mine was 20 kg. In East Africa the weight limit can be as low as 15 kg; check luggage limits with your safari outfitter. Also, luggage should be a soft-sided bag. More on that below. 

TIP: Bring a daypack – it allows you to pack away your warm layer when temps rise. I also kept sunscreen, bug spray, camera, binoculars, and a water bottle in my pack.

An African Safari Packing List

A safari packing list will vary depending on the destination and time of year. East Africa is closer to the equator, so it is warmer year-round, while temperatures vary more widely in Southern Africa where their winter brings cold nights. 

In Botswana in March mornings were cold and we did have some rain so I was grateful for my layers: a cotton utility jacket, a raincoat, a light puffer jacket and a wool scarf-wrap. 

The length of your trip is less of an issue as most safari lodges have laundry facilities. Inquire about laundry access with your travel agent or safari outfitter. I had laundry done once on my safari.

This safari attire packing list  may be more than you need. But it covers everything you may want. You can tailor it to your trip.

• 2 pants (green and beige)
• 1 short utility-style dress
• 1 one-piece shorts romper
• 1 long-sleeved linen shirt
• 1 short-sleeved shirt
• 2 tank tops (beige & white)
• Cotton Utility Jacket
• Light puffer coat
• Swimsuit & Cover-Up
• Socks & underwear
• 1 accent scarf
• 1 light wool scarf wrap
• 1 wide-brim hat
• Camera Equipment

What Shoes to pack for a Safari

For footwear I took two pairs: a pair of boots and sandals. I wasn’t sure about my decision to go with boots instead of runners but it was the right call. We had beautiful sunny days but also heavy rain and mud. Sandals were ideal for hot afternoons (up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and I wore them on game drives a couple of afternoons. Sunglasses, a hat, and a daypack were my other safari essentials.

Is There a Safari Dress Code?

Helpful Guidelines for Safari Style

• Although game lodges don’t tend to have official dress codes, many lodges prohibit any clothing with a camouflage pattern. Also, avoid blue as it can attract tsetse flies.
• Neutrals are ideal — they are easy to mix, match, and you’ll blend with the landscape.
• Bright colors can scare animals away, so leave it to the zebras and giraffes to make the design statement.
• With temperatures fluctuating dramatically, you will need layers, including warm layers. This is more the case in Southern Africa in winter. I brought a down jacket and I needed it. Don’t think Africa will only be hot.
• Safari lodges typically have rain ponchos for all guests, but I suggest you bring your own lightweight raincoat. It’s a convenient layer to have.
• Bring long pants! They are ideal for early morning drives and to protect against bugs. I also wore pants to dinner. 
• Some vehicles have open tops so you will want a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A chin strap is helpful to keep hats from blowing off.
• Most safari lodges have a swimming pool, so bring a swimsuit and coverup.
• There is no need to bring anything fancy for evenings as African safari lodges tend to be casual. That said, it’s nice to change out of what you’ve worn all day.
• Suggested safari footwear: Boots or closed-toe shoes for protecting your feet, and sandals for when it’s hot.

African Safari Outfits- Daytime

During my 6-days on safari, I wore pants and at least two layers on top for the morning game drive then changed into shorts in the afternoon when temps jumped into the high 90’s Fahrenheit. Especially if you are lounging in a swimsuit during your downtime, count on the possibility you’ll change a few times during the day.

For this reason, I traveled with packing cubes which I loved. They act like drawers to keep things organized, which is especially helpful if you stay at multiple game lodges, as I did. You won’t have to unpack and pack up everything with each new lodge.  

What to Wear on Safari in Evenings

Safaris are casual, so bringing fancy items to wear to dinner is unnecessary. Still, I like to change into something a little nicer for the evening. Because it was chilly and I was trying to avoid bug bites, I always wore long pants in the evening, typically pairing those with a long-sleeved shirt and my sweater wrap. I also had a cute linen utility jacket that I wore to dinner. I simply added a necklace to jazz up my outfit.

Everything I brought had to work well with multiple pieces. A long-sleeved cashmere sweater would also be a nice option for the evening, especially if you are on safari in the Southern Africa winter. 

African Safari Wardrobe: Start With What You Have

My number one tip for creating any capsule wardrobe is to try everything on ahead of time. That’s the only way to know what works with what. And start with what you already have. With the pieces I already had in my closet, I bought just a few new items for my safari wardrobe. Below, I include all the key clothing items I brought. If they are no longer available, I’ve listed something similar from a brand I own, even if I don’t have that exact piece. 

I try to focus on brands that are striving toward sustainability and I prefer to buy clothes that will last and I’ll enjoy for years to come. Because I travel often, things need to hold up well and easily mix and match in capsule wardrobes. I focus on well-made essentials rather than trendy items. I’d rather spend a little more and purchase less.

Pants to Wear on Safari

I recommend choosing two neutral-colored pants for a safari wardrobe — tan, brown and khaki green are all great choices. I brought three pairs of pants and in hindsight, could have managed with two, especially given I had access to laundry services. 

I took quick-dry travel pants from Athleta which I love (pictured above). They are very lightweight and don’t wrinkle — ideal when it was hot, but I wanted my legs covered.  Mine are from a few years ago; the Endless High Rise Pant in green and the Brooklyn Utility Pants in tan are most similar to mine.

You could also go with a cotton utility pant such as the Utility Barrel Pant by Everlane. The cocoa color would be a great safari pant. Or the Refined Utility Pant by Banana Republic. 

Safari Shorts

Because it was so hot in the afternoons, I was grateful to have packed shorts. I wore them on an afternoon game drive and lounging around the safari lodge between outings — relaxing on my verandah or taking photos. Mine are several years old. Comfort is crucial on safari, as you sit for long periods in the jeep. I suggest the Trekkie North Bermuda Short ; it’s a great mid-length and lightweight. I love that it has zippered pockets. Available in sizes 0-24.

If you prefer a shorter style look at the Easy Short by Everlane  or the European Linen Shorts by Quince. 

One-Piece Romper

A one-piece romper seems like the perfect safari style —easy and cool. I found mine in South Africa just before I left for Botswana and I was glad I bought it. It was great for hot weather lightweight and I could keep the waist loosely tied to allow air flow.

My style is a small brand I had never heard of, but here are similar options: Athleta’s Brooklyn Utility Romper, the  Short Jumpsuit in Cotton Twill by Alex Mill, or Anthropologie’s Kit Utility Romper. And for a splurge, and classic Out of Africa vibes, look at Frame’s Utility Short Jumpsuit in Khaki Tan .

You could choose this instead of the shorts if you want to pack one less item.  

Safari Style Shirtdress

Yes, I could have gotten by without this shirtdress, but it was nice to have. I wore it on two very hot travel days in Africa. And its classic safari style was nice for the photos we took while enjoying our sundowners. (Sundowners are a highlight of any day on safari; a classic refreshment such as a gin and tonic is enjoyed while marveling at the beauty of the landscape, and reflecting on the day’s adventures.)

Mine is from Banana Republic; I’d had it for a while. I am trying to support more diverse brands that prioritize responsible manufacturing, and Banana Republic isn’t there yet. But they do an excellent job of safari style. This similar style, the  Twill Utility Shirtdress , captures the same look that says I take exploring seriously. J.Crew Factory has a nice option in olive green, the Utility Mini Dress. 

Long-sleeved Shirt

A lightweight long-sleeved shirt is a cornerstone of your African safari outfits; either cotton or linen work well.  I wore mine day and night, on its own and layered. I chose a dark brown linen shirt, but a khaki green or tan would also be the perfect safari staple.  

This is a classic piece you will wear again and again, not just on safari. You may well already have one in your closet. If you don’t, mine is by the Gap, similar to this Linen Boyfriend Shirt.  For an investment piece, I love the Britt Linen Shirts at J. McLaughlin.

For a budget-friendly option look at the Quince European Linen . I own it in white and it’s great quality.The “washed olive” color would be great for a safari. Everlane’s Relaxed Linen Shirt . is another mid-priced option. 

Short-sleeved Shirt

Some people will say to avoid wearing white on safari as it can appear bright and startling to animals. And this is good advice. But I already owned a short-sleeved utility shirt in white, so I decided to bring it rather than buy another one. Mine is a few years old but any comfortable cotton short-sleeved shirt will work well to create your safari outfits. This one is similar and comes in a lovely green: Loft Utility Dolman Shirt.   Quince’s Vintage Wash Tencel Camp Shirt comes in several colors, and is lightweight and wrinkle resistant — great for travel. 

Safari Style Utility Jacket

I bought my linen utility jacket fifteen years ago, but it had sat quietly at the back of my closet for the last ten. I rediscovered it w hen I went through everything I had that might be considered safari attire.

That’s why I always recommend looking through your closet, before you buy anything. You may find some gems, which allows you to invest in a few quality pieces, instead of having to spread your budget across an entirely new wardrobe.

I love utility jackets — they can be styled with jeans, trousers, and skirts, and work long after you return home from your safari. 

My current favorite is this one from Quince, The Chore Jacket. It’s lightweight and only $60. The colors tobacco or olive would both work really well for safari style.

L.L. Bean has a nice selection of women’s jackets that could work for African safari outfits. In particular, you might consider the BeanFlex Short Utility Jacket .

Another cute option would be a bomber-style jacket.

Lightweight Wool Scarf/Wrap

A wool wrap is one of my favorite travel essentials. Even if I am going somewhere warm, you never know when you might need a layer on a chilly evening, or in air conditioning. And they are perfect to carry on the plane which is usually, brrrr. Mine is several years old, but this wardrobe staple is available from many brands at various price points. 

I love the Mongolian Cashmere Wrap by Quince and it’s well-priced. I own their cashmere crewneck sweater and the quality is great. It comes in eight colors.  J. Crew also has a nice option (and it often goes on sale) the  Cashmere Wool-Blend Poncho.

Rain Jacket

I’d say a rain jacket is not entirely necessary because safari lodges will have ponchos available for your use, as I mentioned. That said, I was happy that I brought a rain jacket. It was the perfect lightweight layer on an early morning walking safari (pictured above) and was less cumbersome than a poncho.

My raincoat was light enough to keep in my daypack, so I had it if needed. Mine is by Sierra Designs and several years old. This RainOut Sutro Trench by Athleta is similar. I own many Athleta pieces and am a huge fan of this brand!

For a cute bomber style I suggest Athleta’s Jetset Bomber in grey.

Wide-Brimmed Hat

I both own and wear many hats 😉 but I did purchase a new hat to wear on safari. I chose the Laguna Drover Hat   from Tommy Bahama. (The brand is Kooringle of Australia.) It was perfect. Our safari jeeps always had a roof that offered some sun protection, but note that this is not always the case.  Because I was using a large DSLR camera, a slightly smaller brim was more practical. Technically this is a men’s hat, but the smaller of the two sizes (M/L) fit perfectly. Tommy Bahama has a great online selection of women’s hats .

If you wear corrective lenses, I recommend investing in prescription sunglasses for your African safari. Not having to put my contact lenses in at 5 am was a dream.  My go-to for prescription glasses is Warby Parker and the style I purchased is The Beale , in the color Rosemary Crystal — a very pretty green.

My prescription sunglasses are single-vision, but you can also get them with progressive lenses. And all their sunglasses can be purchased without a prescription as well.

If you don’t have a Warby Parker near you, the website has virtual try-on technology using your computer camera, or you can order several pairs online to be shipped to you, and decide which you like. I own three pairs of prescription glasses from Warby Parker, two eyeglasses, and now my “safari sunglasses”. I highly recommend them — great quality products and service.

Boots for an African Safari

I almost didn’t bring these boots and they turned out to be the most essential thing I wore in Africa. Keeping my feet protected and dry was crucial. We had rain, and lots of mud. If I had been wearing runners they would have been a mess. My boots are the Betsy by Born, purchased last year. As of now they are sold out but I will watch for a similar style by them.

Meanwhile here are some great options: I love the rich caramel color of the Frye Veronica boot available at Nordstrom. A classic and chic safari style by a heritage brand.

And you can never go wrong with a pair of Blundstones; they have a nice safari style boot with a substantial sole — Blundstone Lace-Up Boots.

My sandals are by Nisolo, they are the Go-To Flatform Sandal in almond and come in several other colors. They were perfect to wear on safari — comfy and lightweight to pack. And I liked that the platform kept my feet a little elevated from the ground. They work equally well with shorts and a sundress. Note, these run small, I sized up half a size. 

Nisolo is an environmentally conscious brand and a Certified B Corp. Their artisanal shoemakers in Peru are paid a living wage. 

Soft-Sided Luggage for Safari

For my safari, I borrowed a soft-sided bag that dates to the 80’s; I can’t even find the brand. But I own another travel bag by Eagle Creek and it’s terrific, so I can recommend them if you need soft-sided luggage. The Eagle Creek No Matter What Duffle would be great for a safari; it’s lightweight and water-resistant. Choose between the 60 and 90-liter capacity, depending on your weight limit and how much you intend to bring. Available in several colors.

I love your safari style! Thank you for all of the helpful tips! I am going on two day trip safari’s in Kenya. I wanted to ask if you have a recommendation of a crossbody bag to bring on my day trips. I’m not sure how much stuff I will need to bring for the day. Also which jacket would I bring for the day. I see you packed a few different ones for your trip.

Hi Krystal. How exciting! Kenya will be incredible. I used a small backpack as my day bag as I wanted it to hold a coat, hat, suscreen and jacket. As for what coat it depended on time of day. Mornings were cold so I brought my down-filled jacket. It was a lightweight one that packed up in a small bag, but was quite warm. In the afternoon I brought my raincoat in my bag (just in case as it was rainy season) and I usually wore my light cotton utility jacket with a tee underneath in case I got hot. With most safaris, you go back to the lodge midday to relax, so you can change your clothes and your jacket. For example, I always wore long pants in the morning but wore shorts in the warmer afternoon. Hope that helps ! Have a marvelous trip!

Hi Susan. I stumbled upon you and so glad I did! Thank you for all the info and detail and putting in the links for some of the items, really helps understand what you are recommending. Going in August, Kenya/Tanzania, so will be hotter than your trip. Trying to decide if Bludstones still needed (?) or if a hiking shoe/sneaker type could work since won’t be too muddy. And, you are brave in dresses and shorts! I am already anticipating all the bug bites coming my way!

Hi Jackie. Yes, bug spray is necessary although I didn’t find it too bad. I would definitely bring shorts to change in to between game drives. Based on what you are saying I think a sturdy sneaker with a good sole or hiking shoes will be fine. Have an incredible trip to East Africa!

Why The Safari Jacket Is 2024’s Most Stylish And Practical Menswear Item

It’s the badass outerwear of choice for style icons like Ernest Hemingway and Clint Eastwood, one that historically was less about dressing for dinner, rather about catching it. And yet, the safari jacket still divides.

That’s because get it right, and you look straight-from-the-fridge cool. But get it wrong, and you look the part of the Great White Hunter. Get it right, and you look Burt Reynolds-level macho. Get it wrong, and you just look plain awkward. But, ask any menswear expert, and they’ll soon tell you it’s worth the risk.

Never mind the practical benefits – room to carry your stuff; light enough to wear all summer. The safari jacket is a design classic, whether you’re in the real thing or one of fashion’s many interpretations, and it may just be the only cool jacket you need for the balmier months.

What Is A Safari Jacket?

Take the practicality of the military style field jacket – a tough cotton or cotton-blend fabric formed into a loose-fitting, mid-length garment with four bellows pockets at the chest and hip. Now do it in a more general purpose shade of beige, in a lighter-weight, breathable fabric like linen or cotton drill and add details such as an open neck, epaulettes and a belt to keep everything pulled together and in order.

There you have it: the safari jacket – a kind of field-meets-shooting jacket, substantial enough to wear a layer underneath, insubstantial enough to wear next to the skin or for the sleeves to be easily rolled ready to go hunting in, even if that’s just for the next bar.

Why You Need A Safari Jacket Today

Saint Laurent, which is credited with thrusting the style into the mainstream, famously still offers one, of course. But there’s a good reason why designers including Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and brands like Abercrombie and Barbour have versions too. It just works. When it’s too hot for a proper jacket, but the event calls for something smarter than just a shirt, the safari jacket – functional in the outback, smart in a more urban jungle setting – works.

“The safari jacket is bittersweet – it can look like you’re wearing a costume, but the fact is that it’s great for the summer,” says Gieves & Hawkes creative director John Harrison. “They make quite a statement, but they really do the job.”

What’s more, it’s not a capital ‘F’ fashion piece either. That doesn’t mean a good quality example won’t be wearable for years to come. Just think khaki, cotton, classic. Its versatility is well documented, and it’s the ideal accompaniment to selvedge denim or, when the occasion calls, sharp tailoring. In short, it’s the ultimate trophy piece.

Safari Jacket Style Tips

Don’t overdo it.

The safari jacket is designed to be the star of the show, so allow it to take over, and avoid wearing anything else that attempts to compete with it for attention. If in doubt, muted basics are the order of the day, so throw it over a simple T-shirt and foot with dark denim and minimalist sneakers.

Aim High or Low

Much like other pieces in the menswear hall of fame, it’s possible to dress the safari jacket both up and down. Whether you wear it over a shirt, knitted tie and dark flannel trousers to appear smart or with white jeans and deck shoes for a Riviera feel, try leaving the jacket open but tying the belt across the middle for a nonchalant look.

Re-appropriate It

Unless en route to a fancy dress a party, don’t attempt the all-out utility look. If you’re wearing a safari jacket, avoid also wearing khakis, combat pants, or bush hat. It’s important to re-appropriate the safari jacket from its original setting as an upscale piece to avoid looking like someone who’s lost his shotgun.

Play Around With Fabric

The safari jacket is made by its pattern, but different materials can provide different effects. Linen ages well, making for a jacket that will take on a timeworn look; suede has more of an eveningwear feel, so works well for guys with a smarter wardrobe; while options in leather offer added insulation during colder months.

Leave The Bag At Home

In its infancy, the pocket on a safari jacket would be used to carry ammo, batteries for the GPS, a flask and likely a pipe. Though most modern men have little need for these in everyday life, it’s still possible to use the jacket as intended and leave the backpack at home.

Trust Marks & Spencer to come up with a safari jacket that both ticks all the design boxes and doesn’t offend your wallet. The British high street retailer has put its own spin on the classic piece, choosing to forgo the belt and instead add a couple of buttoned rear vents. So, whether you mount a horse in the desert or a motorcycle in the city, your jacket won’t scrunch up when you sit down.

Sitting somewhere in between Barbour’s signature waxed outerwear and the British brand’s motorcycle styles, this four pocket cotton design is an ideal modern update on the safari jacket. The drawstring waist provides a customisable fit, while a zip-and-button closure, coupled with a buttoned throat latch ensure that when the weather turns sour, it’ll be a useful ally.

The History Of The Safari Jacket

Picture the late 19th-century British soldiers of the Boer War, tramping across the plains of South Africa, unable to find their enemy – engaged as they were in this new, ungentlemanly form of warfare known as ‘guerilla’. Of course, it didn’t help that the British soldiers wore tunics in red, and the Afrikaners – appreciating the advantage of blending into the landscape – wore khaki.

Officers in British high command thought they were on to something – and shortly after came the first British military dress to make a step towards the palette of beiges, dun browns, and olive drabs still used today. The resulting attire – a four-pocket field jacket in khaki – would by turns be adopted by hunters, who likewise needed to be less visible to their prey.

Indeed, the so-called safari jacket was born, and it would remain a specialist item – worn by hunters and trackers including diehard-killers-of-anything-that-moved Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt. Although versions of the safari jacket were re-adopted for both the British and German forces fighting in Africa during World War Two, it was typically only worn on safari and would have looked mightily out of place anywhere else up until the mid-1950s.

This was an idea underscored by Hollywood. From the 1930s, the film machine decided the perceived exoticism of the Great Continent was ripe for the next spate of romantic, action-packed movies, with the likes of Clark Gable donning safari jackets on screen. Out came The Road to Zanzibar (1941), Mogambo (1953), Safari (1956), Hatari! (1962), onwards to the likes of Clint Eastwood in White Hunter Black Heart (1990) – by which time the safari jacket had arguably lapsed into ‘central casting’ territory.

But not before making its forays into fashion. In the movies – especially during that busy run of the 1960s – the safari jacket was typically worn with plenty of dust and sweat, perhaps a rakish neckerchief, baggy shorts, and maybe a pith helmet. Take away the perspiration, however, and the safari jacket was recognized for its practicality for city life.

In India – inspired by the climate again – it became the local answer to the business suit. This was in part why Roger Moore wore a safari jacket in Octopussy (1983), partly set as it is in India. But then Moore, as James Bond, also wore one for the scenes of the private island of The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979).

But then Moore, or his wardrobe team, was ahead of the times: he wore a safari jacket in ‘The Saint’. This wasn’t just before Bond, it was before the other Saint too. It was the designers Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent who really gave the safari jacket a fashion overhaul.

The former introduced his take on the jacket in the mid-1960s, while the latter seemingly stole all the glory – or just got the timing right – after first showing his take on it in 1967, though it was a one-off made for a Vogue story on him the following year that made it a cult item for the times. And it’s never looked back since.

Everything You Need to Know About Fast Fashion

While the meaning of “fast fashion” is fairly straightforward–the description is in the name, after all–understanding why it has become so ubiquitous requires a deeper look at the clothing industry as a whole. On the most basic level, fast fashion is quickly produced trends sold at low price points. But producing and consuming clothing at the current rate we are is taking a massive toll on both the planet and the people who work to make it.

Despite the growing popularity of sustainable and ethically made fashion among younger generations , fast fashion is growing rapidly in volume and profit. According to research by CoherentMI , in the United States alone, fast fashion was worth “$41.15 Billion in the year 2023 and is anticipated to reach $59.85 Billion by 2030.” This means that fast fashion is showing no signs of slowing down and more clothing will end up in landfills and secondhand markets around the world.

What is fast fashion?

There isn’t a set price, product offering, or even seasonal cadence that makes a fast fashion brand. Rather, it’s a way of manufacturing, marketing, and selling clothing that gives a brand that title.

In the late 1800s, collections were produced in two seasons: Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer. “The whole industry is based on systems that were developed after the Industrial Revolution for productions of scale that would allow for economies of scale. And because of that, we have to produce huge volumes to get the cost and pricing right,” Preethi Gopinath , Director of MFA Textiles and Associate Professor at Parsons, tells Vogue . As access and demands for trends increased throughout the 21st century, this system of quickly made clothing using what was then new technology like sewing machines allowed for larger volumes of clothing to be created and sold.

By the 1990s, trend cycles sped up, pioneered by brands like Forever21 and Zara, which began producing clothing at upwards of 52 “micro-seasons” per year. Now, as social media amplifies trends at faster rates, newer, online-only brands like Shein and Temu are producing at an even faster rate using sophisticated algorithms to get new styles to market in a matter of days, sometimes this is referred to as ultra-fast fashion.

Why is fast fashion controversial?

The impact of fast fashion on the environment is a layered issue. For starters, a March 2023 report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said that fashion was responsible for up to 10% of annual global carbon emissions. On the production side, overusing oil-based textiles like polyester means that brands rely on fossil fuels to create new products. According to Business of Fashion ’s 2023 report, “Oil-based polyester accounts for about 50 percent of fiber production.”

“In order to produce lots of goods, [brands] want to use the cheapest materials,” Gopinath says. “What is not sustainable then is the system of buying for short-term use and then tossing. And, when it’s poor quality, it starts peeling off microfibers.” Polyester doesn’t biodegrade and sits in landfills and water systems, shedding microfibers over time. These microfibers end up in the water systems.

Still, overproduction, whether of synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon or natural fibers like cotton, can be an issue. Cotton, for example, is a plant that requires a significant amount of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, with the exception of truly organic cotton.

Fast fashion is made to fit into current trends. Couple that with the fact that it’s made as cheaply as possible; it’s often looked at as disposable. In 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that landfills received 11.3 million tons of MSW textiles . What’s more is that the donation system in the United States and the United Kingdom is imperfect. Many of the unwanted clothing meant for charities is instead sold into secondhand markets in the Global South in countries like Ghana and Chile where textiles that can’t be sold end up in dumps or in the oceans.

“Overproduction rides on the back of the most vulnerable people along the fast fashion supply chain, who are usually from the Global South,” Sammy Oteng, Senior Community Engagement Manager, The Or Foundation , tells Vogue . “In Ghana, where I’m from, the influx of these garments overshadows the good, culturally driven work that Kantamanto—the largest reuse and upcycle economy—does. It is also a culprit in the decline of local textile industries and has eroded the quality and sentimental value people place on garments. This is simply because fast fashion positions garments as disposable. A decrease in garment production amounts, coupled with Globally Accountable Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to provide the investment necessary to develop localized circularity and revitalize the local textiles industry, is a way forward.”

Fast fashion is not affordable simply because the materials are cheap. Historically, workers around the globe ( 80% of which are women) are paid through a piece rate system resulting in wages that are extremely low. Within this system, workers make a very small amount per item, totaling to wages as little as $200 a week for full time work. In Bangladesh, the second largest exporter of garments in the world, workers are paid a monthly minimum wage of just $113 per month.

Pay isn’t the only problem, though. The fashion supply chain is complex, with systems that include subcontracting to work factories around the globe. This often leads to a lack of oversight on safety for workers–many of whom have reported gender-based violence, harassment and building safety issues.

In 2013, a Bangladesh garment factory, Rana Plaza, collapsed killing 1,134 people. As a result the Bangladesh Accord was created to prevent this in the future. According to the the Accord, it “ is an independent, legally binding agreement between brands and trade unions to work towards a safe and healthy garment and textile industry in Bangladesh.”

What are the solutions to fast fashion?

In the last decade, but especially since 2020, several important pieces of legislation impacting fast fashion have been introduced around the world. In the United States, the Fabric Act seeks to make the piece-rate illegal across the country. The Fashion Act is a New York State bill that would require brands to trace their supply chain, and the America’s Act , ​​another federal bill, includes $14 billion in incentives for circularity across the textile industry.

Other solutions to the fast fashion boom involve shifting consumer mindset toward sustainability trends and slow fashion. “Slow fashion is all about choosing to buy fewer pieces: shopping consciously and benefiting from having some amazing made-to-last pieces in your closet instead of lower quality items from a fleeting trend that you might wear just once,” says George Graham, co-founder and CEO of Wolf & Badger, a retailer specializing in amplifying small designers and sustainable fashion leaders . “By shopping slower and with purpose you will find yourself accumulating pieces you truly love and will often wear for years.”

The expansion of second-hand fashion and upcycling is another promising solution to overproduction of fast fashion. A recent ThredUp report highlighted that the global secondhand market is expected to grow to $350 Billion by 2028.

'Safar': The Arabic word for travel has influenced the English language

The term can also refer to sunny days, a brighter-blazing fire or exile.

The Arabic word for travel, safar, is used across dialects and accents. The National

Ibn Battuta , the famous 14th-century Arab explorer and scholar, is considered one of the greatest travellers in history. During his lifetime, he travelled throughout the Islamic world and beyond, recording his experiences in his travelogue – The Rihla (journey).

In the pages where he details his travels to Saudi Arabia, India, China, Spain and the Mali empire, Ibn Battuta wrote: “travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Ibn Battuta’s words emphasise the transformative power of travel and the profound experiences that come through the observation and exposure of diverse cultures, societies and geography.

Today's Arabic word of the week, safar, is the word most often used across dialects and accents to mean travel.

Derived from the three Arabic letters seen, fah and rah, safar is also pronounced as safara in classical Arabic.

As a verb, it has several meanings. The first refers to the act of something being discovered, becoming apparent or clear. This definition can be applied to an object, idea or a concept taking formation or becoming understood.

For example, one can use safara in the context of the weather when referring to a sunny day, meaning that the sunlight has turned the skies clear after bad weather or a dark night.

The Arabic expression imraa safira is taken from this meaning and describes a woman whose face is not veiled or who doesn’t wear a hijab – meaning her face is clearly seen. This is not a negative phrase but simply a way of pointing out a distinction between women who do and do not wear a hijab.

Hob is the Arabic word for love, but can be used in many contexts

Another meaning for safara relates to forging connections between people. The word can be used to describe means of communication that bring groups of people together, such as letters and open discussions as well as messengers and diplomats.

Another verb variant of safara is seffara, which is when a person or object is sent to another place by someone of a higher rank within a family, work or government context. It can also mean to exile someone from the country.

The same word is also used to reference a lit fire that starts to blaze brighter. And in a completely different context, seffara can be used to refer to the act of wrapping an object in cloth.

Aside from these various meanings, safar is most commonly used as the verb to travel. Its official definition is to travel a certain distance and to travel across the land. The word is also used in Farsi, Spanish and Portuguese.

Interestingly, the verb for travel in Swahili is derived from the Arabic safar. The word in Swahili is safari, which is a term that entered the English language in the late 1850s, thanks to British explorer, writer and orientalist scholar Richard Francis Burton .

Aside from bringing the word safari to the western mainstream, Burton also exported one of the most culturally important Arabic stories. He was one of the first to translate a version of The Arabian Nights – an epic story where travel is a significant theme – that includes all the stories from the original manuscripts, rather than solely the popular ones. He also translated the text from the original Arabic, rather than relying on previous translations.

In Arabic, safar is also used to describe other facets of travelling. Mousafir is someone who is travelling or a traveller, while wakalat safar is a travel agency and jawaz al safar is a passport. An embassy is also referred to as safarah, referring specifically to a group of people who have travelled or been sent to represent their country.
