Our location.

Mole National Park was the first wildlife reserve established in the country dating to the 1950s and today covers 4,577 square kilometres of pristine Guinea Savanna woodland of northern Ghana.

The dominant vegetation is open savanna woodland with grasses that can reach 3 m during the rainy season. Open areas of short grassland, known as bovals, are found in locations with shallow soils and iron pans. Narrow bands of riverine forest grow along most of the streams.

The large mammals most commonly seen in the park include elephant, kob, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog, hartebeest, roan antelope, buffalo, various duiker, oribi, baboon, patas monkey and green (vervet) monkey. There are now approximately 600-800 elephants in the park, up substantially from the numbers present in the 1970s.

It is also an international destination for avid birdwatchers with numerous endemic species. There are at least 344 bird species that can be seen, some of which are spectacular to see, like the carmine bee-eater and saddle-billed stork, among others.

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Mole National Park in Northern Ghana

This video includes information from visits to Mole National park in 2003, 2019 and 2023.

Getting to Mole National Park

Most people will fly into Ghana’s northern capital of Tamale. Tamale is a growing city that is worth a few days exploration itself (see links below for fun stuff to do in Tamale). However if you’re short on time, you may want to head straight for Mole National Park.

My friend Abdullah is a tour guide and can provide transportation to Mole National Park as well as a tour of Larabanga.

Abdullah on WhatsApp: +233 240 519 181

Check out Abdullah’s Website: https://garibatours.wordpress.com

Prices given are estimates as of August 2023. ghc=Ghanaian cedis

From the airport, a taxi to Tamale’s city center area is about 100ghc ($9usd). To go all the way to Mole National Park is 400ghc PLUS cost of fuel (possibly another 400-500ghc)

I’ll mention this because I saw it in someone else’s video about Mole Park. You DON’T need a special car, like a 4×4, to make the drive. The entire way is nicely paved. UNLESS you’re renting a car and plan to self-drive in Mole National Park – then you would want a 4×4. This is allowed, but you must take a ranger with you.

There was a time the only road out to Mole was dirt, and very bumpy, but that’s not the case anymore.

If you’re trying to save money you can get on a public bus, or a tro-tro, once you’re in Tamale. These are crowded and fun, adventurous rides. You will want to get off at Larabanga (where you can see the mud and stick mosque and the Mystic Stone I mention in the video). A taxi from Larabanga into Mole National Park is about 100 ghc.

You can contact my friend Abdullah ( +233 024 051 9181 ) on WhatsApp. He’s a reliable and awesome tour guide and can provide any of these services, more tours into the Northern Region and excellent travel advice. Let him know that Trina sent you.

Once you’re in Tamale, here are a couple of videos to tantalize you into staying for a few days and exploring the town. The people here are awesome and will make you feel very welcome.

Visiting mole national park.

Welcome everyone. I am so glad you are here today because we are going to talk about Mole National Park.

Okay, so Mole National Park is the biggest tourist attraction in Northern Ghana, hands down. And I am not saying that just because it’s more than 1800 square miles of unspoiled, barely touched natural savanna landscape. It’s got all sorts of animals, all sorts of plants, and the big attraction, of course, are the elephants.

The cool thing is that you get to do, if you want, you can do a walking safari.

Most safari experiences in Africa do not allow you to get out of the truck and go walking around. I know there’s a couple here and there, but really it’s a very rare thing to be able to do a walking safari.

And of course, that makes sense because they don’t want you getting eaten by a lion or beat up by an ostrich. And so it makes sense.

But Mole doesn’t actually have any big predators. Sometimes you’ll hear a ranger tell a story of, oh yeah, I saw a leopard. And then you find out, yeah, it was somewhere really deep in the park, like five or 10 years ago. So there might be leopards in the park, but no one ever sees them.

So they don’t have any big predators. So you get to do this cool walking safari. So I’m going to take you through everything there from the walking safari to the driving safaris to why it’s good to stay at the motel to the really cool side trip. Larabanga and all the things you should do. So this is everything you need to know about Mole National Park.

Mole Park: Then vs Now

Okay, so I mentioned the elephants and yes, they are the stars of Mole National Park and I will get to them. But I will tell you that I have been to Mole National Park three times over a 20 year span. And I’m telling you this because I want to give you just a little bit of history.

My first time going to Mole National Park was in 2003. The town was pretty small when I was here the first time. And I mentioned that because the only bus to get to Mole was a public bus. And I didn’t entirely understand what that meant.

And it meant that I got a seat. I got a little ticket with a little number on it. And so that was my seat. And all it was, was an old school bus where they were squishing three people into a seat. But then what I didn’t understand about it being a public bus was that also meant they were going to cram people into the aisles.

And then all the way up to Mole, which at the time was a dirt road, a really bumpy dirt road, but we would stop every 20 minutes and then they’d let people off at that village. But not only did they let people off, but then they had to unpack the stuff and give them their stuff.

And then everyone got back on and it was this long, torturous bus ride to get out to Mole. I finally get out there, it’s after dark, and the only people left on the bus are people that work there.

And it turned out that I was actually the only guest there at the time.

When I first went, you actually had to be sort of a rugged traveler just to get to Mole National Park. Now it’s not like that anymore, don’t worry, it is all paved road. When I went by private car, it was actually just a little bit over two hours, and there was like one little quarter mile stretch of road that was being worked on.

Other than that, the road was beautiful and perfect and it’s all in good shape. So when you go now, it is a whole lot easier.

Places to Stay in Mole National Park

Let me tell you a little bit about Mole Motel. There are two places to stay that are within the park and the easiest and cheapest one is Mole Motel.

Now for what I usually like to pay for a hotel, it’s actually kind of expensive. The prices on the rooms range at the current exchange rate from about… $38 to $75 and the $75 are the chalets that actually overlook the watering hole. You literally have a little balcony and you’re overlooking the watering hole. You’re not hanging over the edge or anything, but you’re overlooking the watering hole where the animals gather.

There is however, a lookout area that you can watch a viewpoint that you can do the same thing from if you don’t spring for the chalet. It’s just that when you have it first thing in the morning, you can go out and see what the animals are doing.

Mole Motel is not fancy, but it’s comfortable.

I was a bad travel vlogger and I forgot to get pictures of the inside of the room at Mole Motel. Let me just tell you, they are perfectly fine rooms. They could use a little more lighting for my taste, but other than that, they are perfectly nice. Sorry, I forgot the pictures.

So there are some really good reasons to stay at Mole Motel. or Zaina Lodge.

I’m actually not sure what goes on at Zaina Lodge and I’ll tell you why in a minute. But Mole Motel, a lot of animals come up around the motel and you get to have a lot of interesting close encounters, not dangerous encounters, with animals just by walking around the hotel grounds. And that’s why I didn’t mind paying a little more than I usually pay for a hotel in Ghana.

Zaina Lodge, on the other hand, is a luxury experience. And… their rooms are $365 to $410 a night. Now that includes food. That includes food. The $410 includes a safari drive as well, but that’s definitely out of my price range.

And that’s why I don’t know how many interactions they have over there. I know that they, I saw a video where it mentioned that people had to get an escort to go from their room to like the lodge because they wanted to avoid unpleasant interactions.

It’s not like that at all at Mole Motel. Mole Motel is a little more Wild West. And I’ll tell you some of that when I get to talking about the different animals, the individual animals, I’ll tell you how they interact at the hotel.

The Walking Safari at Mole National Park

You really should start your trip with the walking safari. Yes, it’s a short walk over to the ranger station where you have to be at seven in the morning. It is worth it.

You want to take the morning safari walk because otherwise it can just get really hot. You want to be out there in the cool morning.

Plus it’s a lot easier to spot elephants in the morning almost any time of year.

The walking safari truly is a pretty hefty nature walk. Because you will go tromping through areas that don’t have a path. They follow the animals. If they get word that the elephants are over there or that there’s, you know, waterbuck over there, they will take you to them.

They have a rough path that they kind of follow, but they definitely will take you completely off-roading if that’s the way that makes sense to follow the animals.

And I will say personally, I had two spots that I needed help in the safari walk. There wasn’t a huge amount of help. I just needed a little bit of help.

And if you want to watch the entire safari walk experience, I have it on my second channel. I’ll put a link in the description, but my entire safari walk experience is in there from beginning to end.

Okay. So as I say, it’s a, it’s a hefty nature walk. And the walk lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. And you get to see, I mean, as I say, the chances of seeing elephants fairly up close while you’re walking is really good that early in the morning.

And you could see monkeys, you can see baboons, you can see, they have like three different kinds of antelope there. And they are just, you know, and there’s birds everywhere.

And on the walk, if you have a good guide, they will tell you about the various plants and the different things that they can do.

As our ranger mentioned at the beginning of the walk, is you have to see the safari as the whole thing. It’s not just the elephants, it’s not just the animals.

So you get to go tromping through nature and looking, and everyone’s watching, and it’s like, oh, look over there, oh, look over there .

And then, like on one of the walks, the one in 2019, I got to see a termite mound. The termite mound was like eight feet tall. It was huge, and it’s just amazing that it was that big. And there’s a natural salt lick where the animals come and it’s like a natural rock salt lick thing and as I say and he was explaining the plants but as I say the cool thing is spotting all the animals as you go.

The trickiest part, well, the cool thing is at the end you get to the watering hole. Okay, I think they all end at the watering hole and almost always they have it timed and they kind of know when the elephants are going to be there and you get to see the elephants playing at the watering hole.

Sometimes they’re really calm and sometimes they’re playing and sometimes they’re mating. At least that’s what it looked like in the water. And so you get to kind of end with the elephants at the watering hole. So it’s like this grand finale. Even if you didn’t see elephants on your walk while you were getting there, you were probably going to see them at the watering hole.

The tricky part comes when you have to finish because Mole Motel starts up here and everything is down from it. It’s on like an escarpment and everything is down from it, which means you’ve got to go back up.

And that watering hole is right below the motel. So you basically have to go up this fairly steep, it’s not like a cliff, not like a rock climbers cliff or anything, but it’s a fairly steep climb to get up there.

And that’s one of the points where I needed a little help because after an hour and a half of tromping through nature, my legs were tired. I was done up. and I knew, I told him right off the bat I was going to need help with that.

And so just be aware of that. You know, take water with you, stay hydrated. But if you need help, tell them that, you know, if you’re a good, strong, healthy young person, you’re not going to have any troubles and you’re going to go up the hill. And if you need help, ask for help. There is no problem with that.

But yeah, the walking safaris are really cool because you’re just right out there. And even though these are paths that have been used, they’re not so well trodden and they’re not paved and they’re not, there’s no manmade things involved here. It’s, it is all truly nature.

And that’s the cool part about Mole is there is nothing put on here. There are no animals that are habituated or they haven’t been imported because someone wanted to have giraffes at their private reserve. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Tim and I did a safari in Senegal at Reserve de Bandia. And they brought in some animals. And the reserve was laid out so that you kind of were guaranteed some good viewing of just about anything and everything. And that was fine.

Mole isn’t like that. Mole is completely natural. There are just the parts that they’ve carved out for the motel and the ranger station and the crew, the staff quarters. And that’s kind of as intrusive as it gets, as I say, and it’s like 1800 square miles. So it’s just this tiny piece where humans have just intruded a little bit and animals, the animals have run to the place for the most part.

The Driving Safari at Mole National Park

After the morning walking safari and you get a little time to recover. There is a late morning driving safari, but I don’t think most people opt for that. I think most people wait till the afternoon and it’s around three or three thirty that you have to be over at the ranger station and then they split the cost of the safari car between everyone who wants to go. I think it’s around forty dollars for two hours.

This has to be one of the most affordable safaris you will ever find and then you pay the guide fee as a little separate and it’s still not that much.

But so they split it up between everyone who wants to go and if you’re the only people want to go Then you have to pay the whole thing but hopefully you’ll find other people to go with you and then they basically go driving around which gets you further out than the walking safari allows.

You don’t get out of the car when you’re doing the driving safari not because it’s any more dangerous, it’s just there’s no purpose in it. The way the road is and the distance the animals are from the road You’re not going to see anything any better by getting out of the car to be really honest with you.

But the driving safari is cool because you get to go further out and you’ll see whole herds of antelope. And you might have seen that on your walking safari. That’s entirely possible, but you might see a whole herd of antelope.

Or even cooler is kind of they hear you coming and sometimes they take off and they’ll go leaping across the road. I mean these little antelope that just aren’t that big. I mean they’re not that big, but they just go spring and it goes across the road.

I mean watching the antelope jump is just amazing. You might think, oh, that’s an antelope. It’s boring. No, you watch them in motion and they are amazing.

The kob and the bushback are the most common that you’ll see on any of the safaris. The bushback has white markings on it.

But then when you’re on the driving safari, you might see the waterbuck, and they’re like a little bit bigger and a little bolder. And they’re just really cool.

Not to mention you can see baboons, you can see the green monkeys. There’s actually some red monkeys.

When I was there in 2003, they had just introduced a red monkey and her babies and the baboon troop had actually accepted them and taken them in. They were like refugees from a bad situation kind of thing. And now I understand, we didn’t see them this time. I understand that the red monkey population there is now, I think a couple dozen or more, but it’s nice to hear that the red monkeys are succeeding and the fact that the baboon troop took him in.

Actually, that was really cool, I gotta tell you this.

My first time in 2003, I was walking with the guide and we ended up walking right along with the baboon troop.

Okay, and you know, if you’ve seen the omen, that’s a little scary. But no, we were walking right along with the baboon troop and they just allowed us in.

Of course, then in 2019, the guide, the ranger, referred to the baboons as criminals, and he was very right about that, and I have a story about that one too.

Animal Hijinks at Mole Motel

One of the nice things about Mole Motel is it has a nice outdoor area where they have a pool if you do want to swim, but even beyond that is this wonderful gorgeous scenery that just looks out over the park. And it is absolutely gorgeous.

But where it starts to get really interesting is when the various animals start showing up.

Warthog Encounters at Mole Motel

So warthogs. I can almost guarantee you are going to see warthogs on your safaris. They are… just around everywhere. In fact, you might see the warthogs going through the trash at the ranger station. You might see the warthog on the lawn in front of your hotel room. And I say that because that’s when this little interaction happened. I saw the warthog from inside the room and I went out to try and get some footage of it.

Oh, come here. I’m happy to say hi. I’m not going to chase you away.

Even if you encountered one close up, you really don’t have to worry about it. Don’t be stupid about it. Don’t pick on it. Don’t do things to agitate it. But the warthogs, because they interact up near the things, they get chased off a little. You know, hey, go away. Stop knocking over trash cans. And but you don’t have to worry about encountering a warthog. And actually, they’re really cool up close.

Baboons – The Criminals of Mole National Park

And then you have the baboons.

The baboons are cool and that they’re entertaining. And they too will go through the trash cans at the ranger station or anywhere they can.

But they will also, they will also come right up into the hotel area and do things like this. You could almost see him watching them and calculating, are they gonna chase me off or am I gonna get a chance to do this?

And the other thing that they always forget to tell you or they neglect to tell you, when you check in, they should be telling everyone this is you need to lock your doors, even if you are inside the room, because the baboons will come around and test the doorknobs.

I mean, I am not kidding. They will test the door locks. And if it’s unlocked, they will let themselves in and start looking for snacks.

That actually happened to us.

When I was out on the walking safari, this is in 2019, when I was out on the walking safari, Tim stayed asleep in the room because there was no way he could do the walking safari. He was mostly blind and there was no way he could do it.

So he’s sleeping and because I had the key, I hadn’t locked the door. And so a baboon came in, it was a female baboon. She came in and we had snacks, of course. You always have snacks when you travel, right? And she found some cookies.

She pulled the snack bag down. And then she had a pack of cookies and she had opened them like she had sliced it with her claw, her nail. And she must’ve just been sitting there eating them.

And at some point, someone figured out that she was in there and they came in and chased her out.

Tim woke up groggily and he thought like, someone from the cleaning crew was there and that they had their dog with them.

But as I say, he was mostly blind and just waking up. And so that’s what he thought of the baboon.

And then I came back from the walking safari and I’m like, what’s this mess? You know, and I’m thinking that he spilled stuff and didn’t pick it up or something like that. And then he told me the story of the baboon that came in and stole our cookies.

And the thing is, as I said, we found the pack that she had opened and she had opened it really neatly.

I think she was just sitting there and having, wishing she had some tea, you know?

So the baboons will break into your room and you might think it’s cute, but it’s actually, I wouldn’t want to have that happen if possible.

The female was probably easy to chase out in that. But if you got like an adolescent male, they might get a little aggressive. And because they do have, you know, sharp, I don’t know if their nails or claws or whatever, and they do have teeth, they do have significant teeth.

I wouldn’t want to have to chase a baboon away if I didn’t have to, let’s put it that way.

So definitely if you go to Mole Motel, lock your doors even if you’re in the room. And you will hear, sometimes you’ll hear someone at the door and you’ll say, who’s there? Who’s there? And no one will answer. It’s the baboons checking.

And at least in our room, you could actually see them. If you went into the bathroom, you could see who was at the door.

And we definitely saw a few times. that there were baboons at the door trying to get in.

So that’s why the ranger that we had in 2019 called the baboons criminals.

Elephants Visiting Mole Motel

Okay, so now for the elephants. I’ve already shown you the elephants that you might see on your walk and you see them at the watering hole.

But this is another thing where being at the motel has its surprises.

I was sitting relaxing after breakfast and someone said, oh, there’s an elephant near the motel. Off the breakfast area, there was a bank of rooms, like four or five rooms over that way.

So I went over to see and sure enough, there was an elephant coming up out of the brush. So I was looking and they were over in the distance away.

But I went over to where those rooms were because there was a sturdy, sturdy railing. And I figured if I’m behind the railing, I’m safe. And it was still at least 30 meters to the elephant.

But then two more elephants came up. And they all just sat there eating. And I was filming and filming and filming. And they didn’t mind one bit.

In fact, one of the rooms behind me, the air conditioner turned on. And I’m like, oh, someone’s in there. And they don’t even know they have elephants in their backyard.

So I knocked on the door, because that’s actually the back door for their rooms. And I knocked on the door and said, hey, you got elephants back here. And they’re like, what are you, what’s going on?

And I was like, you got elephants. And they came out and did elephant selfies and, and all that thing.

And yeah. And I followed them around to the other side just to see. And then, and then they moseyed on.

But see, that’s the thing. The animals know this is their space. They know they’re protected. They know. that no human is going to hurt them. So they act, for them, they act completely naturally. They do what they wanna do.

The Mole elephants have a very good reputation for not being really aggressive.

It doesn’t mean some can’t get a little cantankerous now and then. In fact, the ones you see up by the motel are always the males. The females are off in another area and they avoid people.

And also you’ll never see the real babies. You’ll sometimes see like. smaller elephants that I’m sure are like adolescents. But you’ll never see the small babies because they’re with the mothers and the mothers pretty much only allow the guys to come around when it’s time to mate.

Other Overnight and Safari Options at Mole National Park

Oh, and I should tell you, there are options for camping. If you want to camp, they have a campsite and you can actually stay overnight in a place where they have an observation deck for hippos.

I don’t know if you really get to see the hippos or if it’s more about hearing them, but they’re more active at night and you get to experience hippos. If you want to go sleep in a tree in the jungle, you can arrange that. You will need some camping gear for that one, so be aware of that.

If you want to do some drive deeper in the park and go further, you can. You just have to be willing to pay for it and you need to arrange it with the rangers.

So besides the things I’ve told you about here, which are the most common ones, so what pretty much everyone does. There are even more options for going deeper and seeing more of the park and more animals if you want to take them.

By the way, I do have a full blog post right up on our 2019 Mole visit on the website, which I’ll put a link in the description if you want to take a look at that.

Larabanga Mosque and the Mystic Stone

The other thing you want to do when you go to Mole National Park is leave yourself a couple of hours to do the tour at Larabanga.

Larabanga is the town that is sort of the main town on the main road before you go off to get to the Mule National Park entrance.

Larabanga’s two sites are the Mud and Stick Mosque and the Mystic Stone.

It doesn’t matter which order you see them in, but their stories do tie together so you want to see them both.

The mosque is actually built in a Sudanese style. And so you don’t see a whole bunch of them in this area. Okay? So it is a unique construction in the first place. And no, unless you are Muslim, you are not going to be allowed inside. So you take all your pictures from the outside.

But the guides here will enlighten you as to the whole story of the mosque, how it was founded, how the guy who found it had this vision and he threw a spear and it… landed in the spot where the mosque was supposed to be and there’s a whole legend behind it.

And then you go over to the Mystic Stone.

My memories of the Mystic Stone are kind of cool because when I first went there, there was no wall around it. Okay, it was just the stone and it was on this pillar, even the pillar they’ve kind of reinforced now just for safety, and they’ve built a thing around it.

But the Mystic Stone is, if I’m not mistaken, it’s where the guys threw I have to review my notes, but it’s where the guy threw the spear from.

And it has this whole legend of, I think it was the British came through and they wanted to put a road in and they moved the stone out of the way and the next day it was back. And they moved it further away and the next day it came back. And it basically scared the crap out of everybody. And so they built the road in a whole other place.

Okay, that’s the outline of the story, but the storytellers definitely tell it much better.

And so you get this. great legend of these two places.

And one of the really fun things when you travel in Africa is almost everything has a story. And there’s almost always people that are just storytellers waiting to tell you the story. And yes, you should tip them. And yes, there’s a small fee for going in to see the things. A few dollars here and a few dollars there. It’s well worth it to get the story told to you and to be able to just go see these really cool sites.

One to two hours in Larabanga and it is definitely a side trip you should do if you’re at Mole National Park because it’s right there and it’s really cool and you are not going to find it anywhere else.

So from awesome trekking safaris to criminal baboons and cool elephants and legendary mud and stick mosques and mystic stones, this is the kind of experience you can expect when you visit Mole National Park. I hope you’ve enjoyed the video and I really hope you when you get there and go for yourself because I hope you do and I will see you next time.

Mole National Park

Quick navigation.

Mole National Park is located in the northwestern region of Ghana . The park covers an area of 1,868.7 square miles (4,840 sq km) creating the largest protected wildlife area in Ghana.

The park has increased in popularity with some of Ghana’s improvements and it competes with Kakum National Park which is located in the southern part of the country as the country’s most popular protected area.

The savannah landscape across the national park is comprised of both savanna and riparian habitats.  The elevation is slightly rolling hills but overall flat at an elevation around 492 feet (150 m) above sea level.

There are two key rivers flowing through the park known as the Lovi River and the Mole River.  However, they do tend to dry up during the dry season leaving only small pools of water in various depressions of the riverbed.

The savanna grasslands feature wild syringa, African baobab, and a number of different flowering trees that create shade and escape amongst the grasslands.  Collectively, they work together to create a good habitat for the array of wildlife calling the national park home.

There are nearly 100 mammalian species living amongst the borders of Mole National Park.  Lions, leopards, and hyenas are some of the predator species that visitors can hope to see.  Other popular wildlife sightings include buffalo, bushbuck, crocodile, duiker, elephant, hartebeest, hippopotamus, oribi, roan, warthog, and the waterbuck.

Some of the primates include baboon, colobus monkey, green vervet monkey, and the patas monkey.  The martial eagle and Bateleur eagle are two of the highlights from the 344 different species of birds that nest or migrate through the park.

Mole National Park

The majority of people visiting the park find the array of wildlife as the highlight.  With almost 100 different mammalian species and nearly 350 species of birds, it is a great place to see and experience diverse animal life.

There is no pinnacle attraction in Mole National Park, it is more about the eclectic experience.  Mole was the first and the largest national park in Ghana.  It is also argued as the most prestigious.  It is home to a population of elephants that have the greatest chance to survive compared to anywhere else in the country.

Things To Do:

You are invited to get out and explore the national park and see the wildlife that calls this region home.  There are a couple of ways for you to see animals.

Walking Safari

safari mole national park

Get in a 4x4 safari vehicle and come explore the wilderness and the wildlife.  This is your best chance for see a vareity of animals.

safari mole national park

A walking safari is most often a 2 to 4-hour adventure starting early in the morning or later in the afternoon.  Although there are fewer predators in the park, an armed ranger is part of the guided safari endeavor.

Mole National Park Trails

Mole National Park is a wildlife reserve and not traditionally seen as a place to hike.  The majority of activities are through safari.  The good news is, the national park does provide opportunities for walking safaris which gives you a chance to explore on foot while trying to witness the splendor of the wildlife the park offers.

Park Protection

The park was established to protect the diversity of wildlife that lives in the savanna ecosystem.  The primary threat to the survival of the varied species is poaching and human encroachment.  The park has historically been underfunded, but the Ghana government is committed to protecting the natural resources of the national park.

The boundaries for human habitation have been pushed further away from the park.  This has seemed to lessen the amount of poaching which typically came from local residents who now find it too far to travel combined with the other risks.  Elephant protection is one of the primary focuses of the park's conservation efforts.

Mole National Park Ghana – Everything you need to know

Do you know there are multiple places in West Africa to experience an authentic Safari? Well, there is and one of them is Mole National Park Ghana – home to over 600 African Savannah Elephants.

This was the sole reason I travelled from Accra to Ghana’s north – to track as many Elephants as possible. This is a detailed guide to visiting Mole National Park Ghana, how much to budget and how to make the most of the adventure.

How to get to Mole National Park Ghana

There are 2 ways to get to Mole National Park from Accra:

  • You can do a day trip from Accra – fly into Tamale at 6 am on Passion Ai r or A frica World Airlines (it’s an hour’s flight) for $70 return then drive 3 hours to Mole in the Savvanah Region. Once you get to the park, do a 2-hour nature safari to see Elephants and Antelopes and have some breakfast before flying back to Accra on the 5 pm flight.
  • Spend a night or more in Tamale and fully enjoy Mole. This option allows you to do a longer Safari.
  • Drive 12+ hours from Accra to Mole (this isn’t advisable because of safety).

Budget for Mole National Park Ghana

If you’re on a budget but still want to experience a Safari, Mole is where you need to go. Compared to East & Southern African Safaris this is very pocket-friendly.

The entrance fee to Mole is 46ghc ($4) per person and you can either rent a 4×4 jeep for 400ghc ($35) for 2 hours (you can split this cost with other travellers in the vehicle) or go on a walking safari (this cuts out the jeep fee).

A compulsory fee on both the walking and driving safari is the ranger/ guide fee. It costs 24ghc ($2) an hour for the morning safari and 40ghc ($3.5) hourly for the night safari (tip them at the end).

Places to stay in the Savannah Region

  • Zaina Lodge : this is West Africa’s first luxury safari lodge located inside Mole Mole National Park. Staying here is an experience in itself with opportunities to have close encounters with the Elephants.
  • Mole Motel : this is Mole National Park’s very own lodge. Staying here makes it easy to see all the animals at your convenience.

Everything to know before booking a Safari in Mole National Park Ghana

Opening times in mole national park ghana.

Mole has several different Safari times you can pick from. They have morning safaris at 7 am and night Safaris from 6 pm which you have to pre-book and they last for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 6 hours.

Animals you see on Safari in Mole National Park Ghana

On the 2-hour safari, look out for antelopes, elephants, exotic birds and some warthogs. On the 6-hour safari, you’ll go deeper into the forest and see wildebeest and buffalo.

group of teenage elephants in mole national national park Ghana

The rangers believe there to be a few leopards living in the national park but there hasn’t been a sighting in years. However, if you go on a night safari, you may be fortunate enough to spot one.

Best time in the year to visit Mole National Park Ghana

It’s best to visit Mole during the dry season from November to March when there is little to no rainfall. During these months, you have a better chance of seeing Elephants (it’s possible to go and unfortunately not see any Elephants). I went in April (the start of the rainy season) and saw 11 Elephants.

Tips for your first safari

  • Wear long trousers and shoes that have good grip.
  • Carry a bottle of water with you and remain hydrated because the sun will be scorching.
  • Carry sunscreen and re-apply every 2 hours.
  • Remain patient: safaris are a waiting game.
  • Watch out for the baboons, they are the thieves of the jungle (they stole my bag and ran into the forest, my driver went in to retrieve and and fought off a family of them).

This park is 100% a bucket list activity and was the perfect first safari (for budget girlies like me).

Mole National Park

safari mole national park

  • 2 Get around

Mole National Park is the largest and most frequently visited national park in Ghana . It is reasonably well set up to cater for tourists and although it is more expensive than many other parts of Ghana it is well worth a visit.

There is an entrance fee for the park. The fee is reduced for students, but foreign university IDs are not always honored, so it may be worthwhile to apply for an ISIC (international student ID) card.

Get in [ edit ]

Mole is described as 'easy to get to'. This isn't entirely accurate but it is certainly easier than many other places in Ghana! Your options are:

Bus - Daily services run from Tamale , nearest airport, to Mole, these take approximately 6 hours and leave Tamale mid-afternoon and Mole early morning (~5AM). This is the most reliable way of getting to Mole on public transport. Other buses also run from Bole to Tamale, stopping at Larabanga (approx 3 km from Mole). A Daily Metro Mass leaves Wa around 6AM and stops in Larabanga as well. From Larabange you can catch a tro-tro or hitch a ride into Mole NP.

Tro-tro - Run from Tamale and Bole, stopping at Larabanga, but be warned the road is bad and it won't be a comfortable journey.

Chartered Taxi - It is possible to charter a taxi in Tamale to take you to Mole, this will probably take about 3 hours and will be a bumpy and quite expensive journey but perhaps worth it if time is short.

Private Car - Now you do not need a 4x4 vehicle to make a trip to Mole National Park: the roads are paved and a simple sedan car is good enough. The trip should take you about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Tamale, and it is by far the most comfortable and most expensive way to travel to Mole. Some rentals come with drivers, and should you stay overnight, the driver's lodging expense will be included in the rental fee.

Get around [ edit ]

Within the park your only realistic option is to walk or charter a jeep for a tour (walking or driving outside the motel grounds is strictly forbidden unless you have an armed ranger with you). A few taxis are available in nearby Larabanga (3 km away), but the road between Mole and Larabanga is hot with very little shade so if you are planning on walking between the two, take lots of water.

See [ edit ]

safari mole national park

Mole has the widest range of wildlife in Ghana. You'll see elephants, antelope, bushbucks, monkeys, warthogs, baboons and other smaller wildlife.

It is rumored that lions exist in the park but even the wardens haven't seen any traces for a few years. The last lion sighting in August 2004 was immediately followed by a serious poaching incident resulting in the capture and killing of a male lion the following day.

Do [ edit ]

Within the park:

  • Go on a walking safari with an armed ranger. These usually take place in the late afternoon (~4PM) and the early morning (~6AM), depending on the number of people staying you should be able to have a ranger for each group. This is a wonderful experience and a real opportunity to get close to the wildlife.
  • Alternatively you can charter a 4x4 to go on a driving safari (again with an armed ranger), this gives you the opportunity to cover a much wider area of the park. The vehicle accommodates up to seven passengers.
  • Or you can just relax at the motel's viewing platform which overlooks a watering hole, you will generally see herds of elephants grazing and bathing in the early morning or evening few hours before the sun sets.
  • The motel has a swimming pool for those who are bored with nature.

safari mole national park

Surrounding area:

  • Larabanga has the oldest and best preserved example of a mud and stick mosque in Ghana. Although it is worth a visit if you are going to Mole the experience does tend to be a bit mercenary and you are not allowed inside. If you are interested in mud and stick mosques, it is a better bet to visit the ones in the Upper West region.

Buy [ edit ]

There is a souvenir shop, but the prices tend to be higher than in other parts of Ghana.

If you prefer a particular brand of cigarettes, bring them, but Ballantine's (found all over Ghana) and also the humorously-named Tuskers are available at the staff canteen (near the museum).

Eat [ edit ]

The motel has a restaurant attached which serves reasonable western style and local food, although the prices are slightly higher than in other parts of the north, this is your only option in Mole.

Traditional Ghanaian food in large helpings is also available in the staff canteen beside the safari office at lower prices than the restaurant.

Drink [ edit ]

The motel restaurant serves the usual range of juices, bottled water, beer, liquor, and wine.

Water and other beverages were also less expensive at the staff canteen. However, food orders did need to be placed several hours in advance.

Sleep [ edit ]

A wide range of accommodation is available at the motel from budget hostel style accommodation to en-suite chalets with A/C overlooking the watering hole. The prices are higher than in other parts of the north, but again the motel is the only option for accommodation within the park itself. Prices (as of August 2009) are 12 cedis for dormitory bunkbed; 51 cedis for a double room with A/C and private bath; 49 cedis for a family room with three single beds and private bath; and 59 cedis for an en-suite chalet with A/C. The power and water supply are occasionally erratic, but generally pretty reliable and the location - set on a cliff overlooking a watering hole - can't be beat.

It is also possible to camp near the motel, or at a number of other campsites throughout the park. The campsite near the motel has running water, but be aware that warthogs and baboons sometimes sneak into the campsite and raid the trash bins.

If you can't afford the prices at the Mole Motel, you can take a short-ish walk to the nearest village by taking a right turn out of the park and travelling for about 5-6 km down the road to Larabanga. Although there is no public transport along this route you can often hitch a lift in a car with some locals. In Larabanga there are two guesthouses - the Savannah and Salia Brothers guesthouse, run by both of the Salia brothers. These offer rooms at around 5 cedis. The guesthouses are more likely to accommodate large groups.

The monkey's are amazing and the tour guide gives a lot of interesting background information about the village, the monkeys and the beliefs of the people. You should take some money with you because they sell wonderful paintings of the forests and the monkeys in a tourist shop. And please, bring bananas and groundnuts, because monkeys have a rule which is called: no food, no friendship! ;) Take your time especially if you are a backpacker to stay some time with this amazing community and be patient if you wanna continue your journey from this a bit remote area... I have waited a bit till someone took me to the next destination. (It was Sunday! So I don't want to complain here! Just an advice). The tour guide or someone of the organization team will help you to arrange it. Just ask! If you have a car, no problem, you will find a way. Mole National Park is the largest and most prestigious protected area in Ghana, in the north-west of the country, is Ghana’s largest wildlife refuge, measuring 4,849 sq km. The park has very rich flora and fauna. It is best known for its elephants (a population of about 600) as well as many other primates.

Some 94 mammal species, over 300 bird species, 9 amphibian species and 33 reptile species have been recorded in Mole. The large and commonly seen mammals include elephant, kob, roan antelope, hartebeest, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog, buffalo, several duikers, baboon, roan, kob, hartebeest, waterbuck. Predators include lion, leopard, spotted hyena, caracal, aardvark, genet, civet and mongoose. Occasionally, buffalo overrun the park headquarters and the lodge area.

The large bird life includes kites and Bateleur eagles, rollers, kingfishers, Egyptian geese, egrets, pelicans and storks.  Ground hornbills, flycatchers, malachite kingfishers, guinea fowls and rock partridges occur in large numbers at Mole. There are also more than 300 bird species and 33 identified reptile species within the national park. The park is located on grassland savannah and its entrance is near the town of Larabanga. The ephemeral rivers Lovi and Mole flow through the park, leaving behind drinking holes in the long dry season.

The Mole national park was established in 1958 and re-designated a National Park in 1971. It covers an area of 4,840sq km of undulating terrain with steep scarps. The vegetation is pristine Guinea savanna with gallery forests along the rivers and streams.

Mole National Park was the first Wildlife Protected Area to be established in Ghana. The Park lies within two physiographic regions – 65% lies within the Voltaian sandstones basin and 35% within the savannah high plains. The topography is generally undulating with flat topped hills which is dominated by the Konkori scarp that runs north-south through the park and reaches up to 250m. The Park forms part of the Volta River catchment and numerous rivers cross or originate in it to drain into the White Volta River. Mole National Park represents a fairly undisturbed guinea Savannah ecosystem dominated by open savannah woodland.

Species of special interest include Elephant, Buffalo, Kob, Western Hartebeest, Roan Antelope, Defassa Waterbuck, Oribi, Bohor Reedbuck and Red-flanked Duiker. The riverine forests are home to rare and endangered species such as Yellow-backed Duiker and Black and White Colobus monkey. The Lion, Leopard and Hyena are important large carnivores found in the reserve. The baffalo population is of great scientific interest since both black and red colour varieties exist in the Dark. With regards to vegetation, local endemism is generally low in West African Savannah, and only two endemic species Kyllinga echinata, a sedge and Ancilema setiferum var pallidiciliatum confined to northern Ghana, are found in Mole. In addition, three species endemic to Ghana are recorded, namely Gongronema obscurum, Raphionacme vignei and Phinopterys angustifolia. Eleven (11) species of mole are confined to the savannah woodland while Mimusops kammel, a tree that is confined to riverine forests. To date, five species have been identified whch have not been recorded elsewhere in Ghana Croton pseudopulchellus, Indigofera conferta, Indigoera trichopoda, Jatropha neriifolia and Pleiotaxis newtonii. Anthocleista vogelii, a tree of wet sites in the south-western forest zone of Ghana has been recorded for the first time in Mole. Apodostigma palleus is a climber that is also restricted to the forests in the south-west Ghana. Amblygono carpas andogeneiss, a savannah tree widespread in central, east and south tropical Africa, has been recorded for the first time in Ghana at Mole. Mole has an important history linked to the national slave trade route project. The ancient caravan route from Salaga to Wa and beyond to Mali, passed through the heart of the park. This route was used for both trading and to transport slaves to coastal markets. The park Headquarters is located right at a place where two famous slave raiders (Samore and Babatu) raided and erased a village to the ground. The Head quarters is named after one of them – Samole. There is a cave in the Konkori escarpment that was used as a refuge from slave raiders by the local indigines. Other important attractions in the Park include Kwomwoghlugu and Asibey pools, wetland areas (unique bird-watching sites), waterfalls on the Koukori escarpments and remains of many old villages destroyed by slave raiders.

Accommodation

The park is also Ghana’s most developed tourism site in terms of tourist amenities. The reserve has West Africa’s first luxury safari lodge nestled in the heart of the Mole forest. Zaina  the country’s premier ecolodge provides world class hospitality service with a unique touch.

safari mole national park

With 25 rooms are individual luxury tented chalets, complete with private balconies and indoor and outdoor showers for those who like to bathe under the stars. Zaina is experience you have been waiting for. Maraba!!! an eco-lodge with 25 chalets, a 33-room motel with a restaurant and swimming pool and a small museum.

Getting there

It is 24 km from Damongo, the district capital, 146km south east of Tamale, the Regional capital. The park is 700km from Accra and 430km from Kumasi.

One could get to Mole from Accra by air ( Africa World Airlines ) to Tamale and then by road between Tamale and Mole National Park is now paved, greatly reducing journey times.

If coming by public transport from Tamale, you could get a tro-tro (minibus) headed for Wa, and ask to be dropped at Damongo or Larabanga, from where you can get a taxi or motorbike to the park. From Larabanga you could even hike or bike, if there’s enough daylight (one to two hours walking, depending on your level of fitness).

Fringe Communities and Nearby Attractions

There are 33 communities on the immediate fringes of Mole with a total population of about 40,000 people. One of these communities is Mognori, where visitors to Mole are conducted to have a feel of the African Village life of farming and animal husbandry. Visitors may go out on the Mole River in native canoes and stay with local families to participate in everyday activities like going to the farm with your host and helping with household chores. Another interesting community visited from the Mole National Park is Larabanga, reached on foot or by bicycle where visitors may stay at a traditional lodge run by the Salia Brothers.  The Larabanga village is famous for its 500 year-old mosque, reported to be the oldest in West Africa with a very interesting history on its origins.  One kilometre from Larabanga is the revered sacred stone of the community. It is worth hearing the story behind this stone.

Other attractions:

  • Waterfall : The spectacular Konkori waterfalls is located about 100km north-east of the park headquarters. However, access to it is challenging and currently reserved for those out for adventure.
  • Slave Caves : A number of caves located in the park are said to have served as hiding places for indigenes who fled the raid of the two notorious slave raiders; Samori and Babatu who used the current park headquarters location as their base during the of slave trade.

The place is magnificent!! very comfortable spacious room with an Airco!!! 😀 wonderful bed and a TV is a bonus. A very big shower and luxurious amenities, everything eco friendly. The food was also fantastic. as other reviewers mentioned the choice is not big but the quality is more important to me. Also you can ask for any extras or changes. the staff is always there to help you and make your stay even more comfortable. Don’t be shy and just ask for what you need. Great safari, saw lots of elephants and other animals. I spent my birthday at this wonderful place and it was the best time ever.

The place is very serene natural environment. It’s lovely to say the least.

We stayed 3 nights in the unbelievable basic but charming and luxurious hideout in the Mole National Park. It was a unforgettable break out into the wildness and gorgeous nature with Elephants, monkeys and many colorful birds during the organized safaris or just walking through the resort :) The guest rooms are African style tents including a big terrace with breathtaking views looking over the park and two watering holes. The back part of the tents include a huge bathroom and showers. Everything is designed and decorated simplistic but very stylish, thoughtful and luxurious. The bar and restaurant overlook a infinity pool and the fantastic views of the watering hole down in the park. The pool is perfect for swimming and relaxing in the sun with a delicious cocktail. The food was always perfect and many options available including fresh fruits and local products. The time at Zaina lodge was a blast and we will definitely come back for more pleasant and relaxing time :)

Let me start with saying, that the entire Staff was so lovely and professional. Big thank you to all of the Service members, especially Manni. He tried his best, to make us understand the Ghanian culture a bit better. The food was just perfect and prepared with so much love. (5 ⭐️ )The Chef was so lovey, considerate and patient. The safari tour with Daniel and the driver was very adventurous and educational. They did their very best, for us to see the animals which was successful. The entire Lodge is just so beautiful. The rooms are very unique, clean and it had an AC. We even had Animals come to our doorstep. It was just an amazing experience I cant describe it, you would have to see it for your self. I would do it all over again. It was definitely one of our best experience in Ghana. Thank you so so much to the entire Zaina Team♥️

I’ve found the best-value safari destination in Africa

Rare wildlife encounters are also on offer here, with the privilege of up-close-and-personal viewings.

Beautiful Wild African Elephants in the Mole National Park, the largest wildlife refuge in Ghana, West Africa

Just for a second, through a gentle peppering of opalescent beetles attracted by my vehicle’s headlights, comes a surreal glow. Two ghostly blue disks momentarily appear in the middle distance, as roving high-powered torches scan the darkness. They’re the reflected light from the retinas of a bush baby, a tree-dwelling Furby-like primate about the size of a domestic cat.

I’ve been on traditional early morning and late afternoon safari drives in many parts of Africa . Here, after night falls, they’re very different – like expecting to recognise da Vinci’s Mona Lisa on seeing a random square inch of its canvas every couple of seconds.

Much of my safari becomes about everything except sight: tracing a splash to a four foot (1.2m) long Nile crocodile darting into a waterhole, smelling wild mint on a waft of warm air and hearing the electric-fence buzz of West Africa’s cicadas.

A tangle of trees – mahoganies, kapoks and syringas, often braced by the Burj Khalifas of termite mounds – forms the dominant habitat in Ghana ’s Mole (pronounced Mo-lay) National Park, in the country’s Northern Region. The tangle slowly reveals landscapes in a way which doesn’t happen on the open savanna grassland of East Africa.

Here, the green glow of a male bushbuck’s eyes is reflected back at me as it readies to protect its females; there the spotted fur of a genet (a type of cat) in the undergrowth.

Mole National Park Ghana Image by writer Ian Packham ian@encircleafrica.org

Although I’m not lucky enough to encounter one, Ghana also offers as good a chance of spotting nocturnal pangolins as anywhere.

Ghana, like other West African nations, isn’t known for safaris. When it comes to great value wildlife holidays, it’s one to make even your bank manager smile.

The launch of direct British Airways flights four times a week from London Gatwick (adding to its existing daily Heathrow flight) last autumn means that the price of economy seats on the six and-a-half-hour journey are coming down, often available for less than £500 return.

You can safari in Mole for £35 per person per day (based on two sharing), a price that takes care of entrance fees, half board and a wildlife drive.

That’s less than the £53 an average British visitor spends at home, let alone the £75 minimum it will cost you to camp within better-known parks such as Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve .

Mole National Park Ghana Image by writer Ian Packham ian@encircleafrica.org

The largest national park in Ghana at 1,869 square miles (4,840 square kilometres; more than three times the size of Greater London), Mole’s inhabitants include four of the Big Five species (elephant, leopard, lion and Cape buffalo) – only rhino are missing.

Night game drives are standard activities at Mole. In Kenya , they’re usually only possible when staying in wallet-clenching private concessions.

It’s true that Mole’s most basic rooms, at its eponymous motel, are almost identical to my first visit 18 years ago as a backpacker. However, those looking for a little (or a lot more) comfort now have the option of staying at Zaina Lodge, which at £432 per room full board with a daily game drive is still something of a steal compared to similar options elsewhere in Africa, where a night’s all-inclusive can easily top £700 per person.

The Mole Motel and Zaina Lodge sit on the 820ft (250m) high Konkori Escarpment with rooms (and pools) overlooking waterholes fed by tributaries of the White Volta.

These are popular cooling off points with the park’s elephants, which have a habit of wandering through the unfenced compounds at will – I’m warned to check before leaving my room.

Mole National Park Ghana Image by writer Ian Packham ian@encircleafrica.org

Walking with Mole’s wildlife – another activity banned in Kenya’s national parks – is what makes Mole particularly special. As I edge away from an approaching warthog, my guide Omid says: “It’s okay, they’re used to us, they come inside sometimes, they’ve come to welcome you.”

Sri Lanka: The budget safari destination that’s a third cheaper than Kenya

The low-cost country of safaris and beaches that's back on the holiday radar

Unfortunately for Pumbaa and family, Mole’s elephants are just as accommodating, and soon draw my attention away. In contrast to Kenya, where ivory poaching has broken the bond of respect between humans and elephants, Ghana’s pachyderms remain docile enough to approach on foot. “We do a lot of walking safaris,” confirms Emmanuel, head guide at Zaina Lodge. “In Kenya they cannot – the elephants are too violent.”

In just one two-hour walk I see more elephants than I ever have in Botswana ’s Chobe National Park (grand total: one), which is considered a bastion of elephant conservation with up to 50,000 animals spread over an area not much more than twice that of Mole. Back in a safari vehicle, this time by day, my passage is halted by a herd of Cape buffalo. “Rarer than elephant,” says Emmanuel, smiling.

That’s the beauty of Mole – a safari turned on its head – where the common become the rare, guide-led walks are the norm, trees replace vast open savanna and you’ll head home having spent less than you might have done at home.

Getting there

British Airways flies from Gatwick and Heathrow to Accra. Connecting flights are available on airlines such as TAP Portugal and ITA Airways via their European hubs.

While independent travel is possible, local operator M&J Travel & Tours offers four-day trips to Mole from £941pp, excluding flights.

Staying there

Mole Motel has doubles from GC650 (£40).

Zaina Lodge has two-night stays from £863 per room, full board.
