Tigers & Ligers

Is human contact good for wildlife?

IN A PROPERLY RUN PRESERVE like the Myrtle Beach Safari (MBS), contact between humans and animals inspires guests and contributes to the animals’ physical and emotional wellbeing. When their needs for food, shelter, safety and affection are met, our animal residents begin to exercise curiosity, shed their fear of humans, and develop interspecies friendships. Some of these friendships have become YouTube sensations, such as Suryia the orangutan and his puppy dog best buddy; Bubbles the elephant and her pet hound dog; and Anjana the chimpanzee who helps care for the Safari’s tiger cubs.

What are living conditions like for the Safari’s animals?

Tiger on bridge

THE SAFARI IS LIKE A WILDLIFE LUXURY SPA : 55 manicured acres that include large open spaces, covered forests, fresh-water ponds, tall grasses, purling waterfalls, climbing platforms, exploring caves, and rock outcroppings. The animals move freely from one environment to another, much as they would if living in the wild. The MBS staff offers animal residents the best in dietary and veterinary care, and staff members live at the preserve to ensure that animals are tended to every hour of every day.

Why do animals at the Safari behave so well?

MYRTLE BEACH SAFARI CAREGIVERS LOVE THE ANIMALS in their charge, and the bonds between them are based on familiarity and trust. Each day caregivers offer the animals new experiences including nature walks, swimming in a customized pool and in the nearby river, running games, and a rotating selection of age-appropriate toys. The animal residents behave so well because they enjoy their life at the Safari.

What’s a typical day for animals at the Safari?

TIGERS, APES AND OTHER RESIDENTS of the Safari interact with the public for twenty minutes or so, three days per week, from March through October. The rest of the time, they roam through their spacious habitats, splash in their 50,000-gallon pool, and play with their animal friends. At our second location—Preservation Station located in North Myrtle Beach’s Barefoot Landing—cubs interact for brief periods with visitors, and the rest of the day they spend playing and napping.

Where do the Safari’s animals come from?

SOME WERE RESCUED . Bubbles the elephant was an ivory orphan rescued from poachers. One of the lions was found wandering around a golf course. When some of the big apes were rescued from abandoned medical research laboratories, they still had experimental tubes in their limbs. Other animals were born here as part of the Species Survival Trust (SST), a well-known program for preserving genetic diversity. As a result, some of our tigers are the only remaining members of their particular variations.

Why breed wild animals in captivity?

THE MBS HELPS SAVE HUNDREDS OF SPECIES FROM EXTINCTION by breeding animals that are failing in the wild. The main reason for this failure is that humans have destroyed 99% of all natural wildlife habitats. People often ask, “Shouldn’t these creatures be allowed to live in the wild?” Yes, but tragically the “wild” has been destroyed through over-development, mass tourism, and environmental damage. For example, Africa is ten times the size of the United States, yet only 10% of the land remains viable as home for megafauna. In the case of tigers, many scientists judge them to already be functionally extinct in the wild. The MBS invests heavily in tiger conservation efforts, but with only 3,000 tigers left in the wild the only way to avoid total extinction is through captive breeding and management of bloodlines. For more information, visit www.speciessurvivaltrust.org .

What happens to all the cubs that are born at the Safari?

safari nation myrtle beach sc

SOME GUESTS ARE CONCERNED : What do you do with all the cubs? The number of cubs born each year at the Safari is less than a dozen. The Safari does not mass-produce animals. And since our tours are seasonal, we try to ensure that cub births coincide with the spring months. Even during peak summer season, there are tours only three days per week and three or four cubs are enough to provide all our guests with an up-close experience.

Cubs at the Safari are born here as part of a captive tiger breeding program run by the Species Survival Trust (SST). The purpose of the program, conducted in partnership with several university genetics departments, is to create a genetic backup for the world’s rapidly dwindling wild tiger populations.

Tiger cubs are our most popular Animal Ambassadors. Safari guests are inspired by the hands-on encounter with these miracles of nature, an experience which has led many of our visitors to become involved with wildlife conservation efforts. However, a cub’s role as Animal Ambassador lasts only four months on average. After that, they remain under our care for the rest of their lives, either on site at the Myrtle Beach Safari preserve or else at zoological facilities that have been vetted and accredited by the SST.

Is it okay for people to hold wildlife cubs?

YES, FOR MANY REASONS . First, allowing cubs to have physical contact with humans reassures the cubs that humans are safe and enjoyable to be around. Since public interaction is closely monitored and limited by Safari staff, the cubs find the event exciting and fun. Second, cubs that acclimate to human contact will happily allow their veterinary doctors to check their teeth or take a blood sample. Many zoos must restrain or sedate their animals to perform such tests. Second, people save what they care about, and holding cubs inspires many of our guests to get active in wildlife conservation. These wildlife interactions have generated millions of dollars that fund conservation work here and abroad.

Why are cubs taken away from their mothers?

LIKE SOME HUMAN MOMS , not all tiger moms take good care of their kids. Often the moms don’t clean or feed their offspring, and frequently the mother tigers abandon their cubs while they go off to hunt. This leaves the cubs to die of starvation, exposure, or predation. Some tigers make great moms but others are neglectful, and hand-raising the cubs creates a bond with the MBS caregivers and optimizes the cubs’ chances of surviving.

Experience has shown as well that tiger cubs growing up among humans at the Safari exhibit less stress and greater health than cubs raised in zoos.

Why are hand-raised cubs better off than cubs left in the wild?

ANIMALS THAT LIVE WITHOUT HUMAN CONTACT are called feral. Feral dogs and cats may look like domestic pets, but their behavior is different: feral animals are more aggressive, they frighten easily, distrust human companionship, and survive by fighting and killing. Animals who are not hand-raised, who do not receive daily care and feeding—especially during the critical puppy/kitten stage, between 2-12 weeks—remain fearful of humans throughout their life. Without early contact, they do not understand what humans are. We see similar wary behavior in big cats and wild dogs such as wolves and foxes that are raised in zoos with hands-off policies.

Non-feral big cats are much less suspicious of humans, and consequently, they are easier to care for. For instance, non-feral cats can be examined by veterinary staff without dangerous sedation.

Where did your elephant come from?

BUBBLES THE ELEPHANT WAS RESCUED by the Safari in 1982, when she was abandoned in Africa. Her herd was slaughtered for their ivory, and baby elephants by the thousands were left to perish without the care of their mothers. Bubbles was one of the lucky few that survived. Today she is a happy, easygoing giant who spreads her affection to visitors—and to her own pet dog named Bella.

Is Bubbles harmed when she lets people climb on her back?

NOT AT ALL . An elephant’s spinal structure is like that of a horse or camel: super-strong and built to carry heavy weight. Bubbles weighs 9,000 pounds—the size of ten horses. She could carry ten people on her back without any discomfort. Just as important, Bubbles has made it clear she enjoys playing with visitors. When swimming, she often picks people up with her trunk and places them on her back, one right after the other. This is not something we taught her: it is a game she invented on her own.

Overview of the 2024 Myrtle Beach SOS Spring Safari

Join fellow dancers at the Myrtle Beach SOS Spring Safari April 18–28, 2024, and celebrate the Lowcountry classic Shag dance. While Myrtle Beach is a popular destination for its sandy shoreline and green fairways, the Grand Strand is also renowned as the birthplace of shag dancing.

The Myrtle Beach SOS Spring Safari is a 10-day celebration of soul music and shag dancing in North Myrtle Beach. Pastor released, website suspended amid wife's death investigation

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A Myrtle Beach pastor was released from his duties amid an ongoing investigation into the death of his wife, 30-year-old Mica Miller.

UPDATE: Death cause of pastor's wife released amid harassment claims and church unrest

The overseer of Solid Rock Church in Market Common sent a notice to its members on Sunday that Pastor John-Paul Miller was released from all ministerial functions.

The notice states that Miller is released "for a time of healing, counsel, and guidance, pursuant to our governing instrument."

The Solid Rock Church's website was also suspended over the weekend. The website link now redirects to a webpage reading "This account has been suspended."

Mica Miller was found dead in Robeson County last weekend.

On Thursday of last week, the Robeson County Sheriff's Office said they started an investigation at Lumber River State Park, where she died, to determine the cause of her death.

John-Paul told ABC15 in an interview last week that Mica's death was a suicide, though law enforcement has not released a cause of death. Friends and family members have expressed disagreement with John-Paul Miller's statement that Mica died by suicide and are urging law enforcement to look closely into her death.

Online records show divorce proceedings were underway between the couple.

Friends and family held a rally Sunday out front of Solid Rock Church, calling for justice for Mica. Mica's family also held a memorial service Sunday afternoon - at the same time a memorial service, hosted by Mica's estranged husband, was held at the Solid Rock Church.

ABC15 received police reports Monday morning alleging that Miller was being harassed in early March and "was afraid for her life."

Weeks before suicide, Mica Miller confronted husband at tire shop: Video

Editor’s note: This article mentions suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, resources or someone to talk to, you can find it at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline website or by calling 800-273-8255. People are available to talk 24/7.

( NewsNation ) —   A video obtained exclusively by NewsNation shows the strife between Mica Miller and her husband John-Paul Miller weeks before her suicide.  Mica went to East Coast Honda in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina after her tires had been slashed, when she got into an argument abruptly with her husband.

NewsNation correspondent Rich McHugh calls the video “a window into everything that we’ve been … guessing — the struggles that they had been having the previous two years.”

McHugh also obtained reports from the Myrtle Beach police department showing at least eight contacts by Mica Miller with officers in the weeks before her death.

Mica Miller was found dead April 27 at Lumber State Park in Lumberton, North Carolina, about 70 miles north of Myrtle Beach. The Robeson County, N.C., medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.

In those police complaints, Mica Miller accused her pastor husband of stealing her car, installing a tracking device and hospitalizing her against her will. But the most damming thing she told police is that her pastor husband started “grooming” her when she was 10 years old.

John-Paul Miller’s attorney pushes back

John-Paul Miller, who is 14 years older than Mica, has fiercely denied that allegation. His attorney, Russel Long, issued a statement Thursday saying the “grooming” idea “couldn’t be farther from the truth. She moved to Myrtle Beach at the age of 15, was married to another man at the age of 18 and divorced at the age of 21.”

Mica Miller’s sister, Sierra Francis, believes John-Paul Miller did “groom” her sister, but not that young.

“I would guess that she probably meant 2010, not ‘10’ (years old),” she told NewsNation’s “Banfield.” Francis said her sister told her the “grooming” began when she was 14 or 15.

John-Paul and Mica Miller were married in 2017. They had been separated since January of 2023.

Long’s statement repeats authorities’ conclusion that Mica died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a finding that “completely exonerates Pastor Miller of any wrongdoing.”

Long is also demanding that media outlets stop “perpetuating these harmful falsehoods. Any further dissemination of defamatory and libelous statements will be met with legal action,” the statement said.

Mica Miller’s family, however, is not backing down. The attorney for Sierra Francis, Regina Ward, says the family is contemplating some sort of civil action, perhaps against Solid Rock Church, of which John-Paul Miller is the de facto owner.

“He went after everything that meant anything to this young woman,” Ward told NewsNation. “She was brainwashed by this man. He abused her in every possible way that there is.”

Also releasing a statement Thursday was Angela Brian Clark , who says she was a close friend of Mica Miller. She says her friend’s death “has created a wave of emotion, speculation, hurt, brokenness, sadness … for me. The stories that Mica shared with me personally are horrific.”

Clark notes John-Paul Miller’s denial of being involved in his wife’s death but says “you don’t have to physically pull a trigger to be responsible for someone’s death.”

A police timeline shows Mica Miller leaving her home April 27 just before noon, buying a gun, then three hours later calling 911 and threatening to take her own life.

The sheriff’s office said John-Paul Miller was not in North Carolina the night before or the day of Mica Miller’s death. Surveillance video captured him in Charleston, South Carolina, at an athletic event.

Man may have heard Mica Miller’s suicide

In another Thursday development, a man says he heard cries and a gunshot at the park during the time when it’s believed Mica Miller died.

Johnnie Jacobs revealed to NewsNation affiliate WBTW that he found the 30-year-old’s fanny pack with her ID inside and heard crying followed by a gunshot, then silence.

“I heard a cry — a faint cry. Heard it for about two or three minutes, then the crying stopped,” Jacobs said. “If it would have been a person out there crying where I could see them, I’d have checked on them all day long.”

Also this week, a food server told NewsNation that John-Paul Miller left her a large tip and wrote his phone number on the restaurant bill — which led the two to exchange flirtatious messages. That occurred two months before Mica Miler’s death.

The server, whom NewsNation agreed to identify only by her first name Christiana, says she and Miller then exchanged texts after Mica’s death.

He repeatedly asked Christiana to send pictures of herself, including bikini pictures, and called her “super-hot.” The pastor never asked to meet in person, she said.

One more revelation from police reports: Mica Miller was the suspect in a now-closed theft investigation in which nearly $1,200 in donations meant for the Solid Rock Ministries’ missionary efforts in Africa were reported stolen.

Mica was suspected of taking the money from a church account and putting into her personal account.

Police said the investigation was closed April 8 after the city attorney determined that there was no probable cause and that the case was a “civil matter between [the] involved parties.” Miller’s name did not appear in the police report, but police confirmed that she was the “offender.”

Death of pastor's wife shakes community, reported cause of death makes it tougher

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (TND/WPDE) — A community in South Carolina is mourning the death of a 30-year-old pastor’s wife, apparently from suicide.

Mica Miller died last weekend at Lumber River State Park near Myrtle Beach.

“ Mica was energetic , affirming, adventurous, faithful, loving, giving, forgiving, talented, joyous, creative, assertive, bold, determined, authoritative, passionate, hardworking, a risk taker, and so much more,” her obituary said.
“She was probably the greatest wife anyone could ask for," her husband, Pastor John-Paul Miller, said. "She was incredibly affirming. We spent every night together for hours just talking and talking and talking.”

He added, Mica had some mental health struggles and had been getting help.

“Each time we would help her through it and take her to the doctor, and we got through it, and everything was fine,” her husband said. “She even gave a few testimonies here at church that we have on video. She battled suicide, but God took care of her and got her through it.”

Mica’s friends mentioned her leading the women’s ministry and worship team at church, and they can’t believe she’s gone.

“She had a heart for missions. When she went to Africa this time, she, she just fell in love. That was her heart. She would do anything for anybody," said Tricia Ross, a friend of Mica’s, as she fought back tears.

Her husband said Mica had dreamed of opening a school in Africa and was always giving to others.

Now, her husband has a message for families dealing with mental health issues: “If you see any type of sign, get them to a doctor. I mean the second you see it. Don’t wait.”

If you or someone you know is struggling, you can call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 9-8-8. It's available in English and Spanish 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Chris Gotterup closes with 4 straight birdies for a 64 and the 2nd-round lead in Myrtle Beach

  • Copy Link copied

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Chris Gotterup birdied the final final four holes and six of the last eight for a 7-under 64 and a one-stroke lead over Robert MacIntyre on Friday after the second round of the PGA Tour’s inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic.

After making two birdies and and a bogey on the front nine at Dunes Golf & Beach Club, Gotterup played the back nine in 6-under 30 in windy conditions. He made a 50-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th and a 17-footer from the fringe on the par-4 18th.

“Really just executing shots pretty solidly down the stretch there,” said Gotterup, the 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma player who is winless on the PGA Tour. “It got pretty windy, so definitely a good finish.”

Making his 27th PGA Tour start, Gotterup had the lowest score of his career to lead for the first time after a round. He had a 12-under 130 total on the tree-lined, seaside layout.

“It’s a little tricky when you’ve got the wind going on some cross-wind holes, but I definitely can take advantage on a couple holes with some length,” Gotterup said. “Obviously, you’ve got to hit it straight to do that.”

MacIntyre, the Scot who helped Europe win the Ryder Cup last year, had a 67. He was tied for the first-round lead with Beau Hossler after a 64.

“It’s been really good,” said MacIntyre, also seeking his first tour victory. “I think it’s difficult to back up a good round yesterday. Felt like I done that really well.”

Jorge Campillo of Spain had his second 66 to get to 10 under. Hossler (69), Alex Smalley (65), Davis Thompson (68) and Alistair Docherty (68) were 9 under.

Blades Brown became the second 16-year-old in two weeks to make the cut, shooting 72-67. Last week, Kris Kim advanced to the weekend in the Byron Nelson.

“For me, I was like, `OK, I can either make the cut or do homework tomorrow and feel bad about myself,” Brown said. “After I made that putt on 9, that little two-inch putt, I was like, `Yes. I can go chill by the beach, I can do whatever.’ I’m so stoked.”

Brown, from Nashville, Tennessee, is high school sophomore. His mother, Rhonda Blades Brown, played two seasons in the WNBA.

The tournament is being held opposite the Wells Fargo Championship. a signature event in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Myrtle Beach winner will get a spot in the PGA Championship next week, but not in the Masters or a guaranteed spot in the remaining two $20 million signature events.
