Safari Shoes: Quick Guide to Safari Footwear

Safari Shoes: Quick Guide to Safari Footwear

Select safari shoes which are suited to your specific type of safari.

If you are planning a safari, it is important to pack light. Shoes are often heavy, bulky travel items. When it comes to safari shoes, clever packing can save invaluable luggage space and weight. Have you thought about what lurks on the ground around camp? Will your shoes stand up to the terrain on a walking safari? These are our quick tips to getting the best shoes for safari.

Which are the best shoes for safari?

If you are going on a game drive safari, the best shoes to take along are trail shoes. These are usually designed to be lightweight (great for keeping the weight of your duffle to a minimum), comfortable, and breathable for outdoor activities. They also usually provide grip for trail conditions, which is great if your guide suggests a short bush walk. Depending on preference, you could also wear these shoes on a walking safari or other active safari. Shop men's safari shoes and women's safari shoes shoes.

Top tip: Check your shoes for snakes, scorpions, and insects - another reason to wear closed shoes.

What shoes should I pack for a walking safari? Do I need to take hiking boots?

Again, this depends on preference. Your travel conditions will also make a difference to the shoes you take on a walking safari. In many cases, your trail shoes will suffice. If you are looking for ankle protection or if you are worried about insects and reptiles, a boot with a higher rise or a pair of hiking boots is a good idea. If you are walking in muddy forest conditions, sandy terrain, or face river crossings, a medium- to high-rise, waterproof boot with a built-in tongue will keep water and sand out and keep you comfortable.

These boots were made for walking safaris: Our Rufiji™ APU Combat Boots were originally designed for Africa’s anti-poaching units. These boots are proven to be comfortable over many hours of walking across varied terrain, muddy conditions, and river crossings.

Easy-on, easy-off ankle boots: With closed shoes the wise choice for safari-goers, Chelsea boots are a safari camp favourite for slip-on convenience and comfort - and they look great too! The Buffalo Boots are made from genuine leather with a grippy rubber sole - combining grit and good looks for luxury safaris to self drive safaris (and everything in between). From short walks to around-the-safari-lodge style, the Buffalo Boot is an easy choice for every element of camp life.

What shoes should I wear around the lodge?

Slipping your feet into a pair of safari sandals is a very satisfying sensation as the day heats up on safari. A hybrid sandal is a popular choice amongst travellers. Our Rufiji™ Leather Safari Sandals are African-made for African adventures - a shoe women will love on safari and at home.

Are there any safari footwear accessories I should consider?

Blister-free socks Safari shoes are best paired with blister-free socks. A blister can be a real hindrance on safari. Don’t take the risk by investing in a pair of blister-free socks.

Gaiters If you are looking for a bit of added protection from ticks and blackjacks around the ankles, a pair of ankle gaiters will come in handy. If you opt for trail shoes over boots, gaiters will also help to prevent debris going into your shoes. Our gaiters are available in suede leather and canvas.

Testimonials

Ideal boots for me.

I’ve put my Courteney Warrior boots through two years of continuous use, so I am now in a good position to offer credible feedback. I live in south west England, where it’s mostly damp and often wet, which has destroyed the stitches of a handful of more well-known hiking brands. But not these. I’m no hunter and as such they are mostly used for drier dog walks and gardening, while they’ve also taken me across the Trossachs in Scotland, Brecon Beacons in Wales, and Tatra mountain range in Poland. And the Big Smoke on occasions! They’ve shaped well to my feet and are the most slipper-like outdoor boots I own, getting softer with use. Not a blister from day one. The cleat soles have barely worn, with the advantage of not collecting lots of stones and twigs. These boots are virtually indestructible. The best ever. Worth every penny. Happy to promote a worthy, more ethical and niche brand in a world of mass production.

Andy Steel & Wolfie the Border terrier

Hi folks at courteney in my old home town of bulawayo 😎.

My 14 year old son has officially taken ownership of my old Courteneys.   I have passed them onto the next generation and unlike Sting’s “Dead Man’s Boots” he seems to love them as much as I did.

Vintage 1998 they started their life with a 4 day hike in the Chimanimanis. Not a single blister. Since then they have hiked in Europe and Australia, been dubbined about 12 times, grown green mould in the damp Adelaide winter, and still have their hard-wearing original laces!

My son hiked in the Morialta Conservation Park and he loves them. Not a single blister.

Keep doing what you’re doing.

Justin Wynn

Finest, best fitting, and toughest boot

This is the second pair of Courteney boots I have purchased in the past two years. They are by far the finest, best fitting, and toughest boot I have found. I wear them daily around town, and also hunt with them hard, once a month on the desert hills of the Tejon Ranch, here in California.  The boots break in fast and they never let my feet get wet. Once while riding a horse, a branch from a tree was stuck in the toe. Yet it didn’t penetrate the boot. The only flaw I can find is when applying the polish that is supplied at time of purchase, the beautiful appearance of the gameskins are subdued into a brown colour. Even though the boots lose their luster after a while, they still perform flawlessly. I would like to thank you for your excellent craftsmanship in these boots – even the laces hold up.

Steven W. Herr

Most comfortable pair of boots i’ve ever owned.

I’ve been wearing a pair of your Selous boots now for four months. Wow!!! I can honestly say they’re the best made, most comfortable pair of boots I’ve ever owned. I was a little hesitant at first to spend almost $400 on a pair of boots but what a difference at the end of the day!  Anyone who has ever walked out of the wilderness with “hot feet” knows every painful step is worth $5 to avoid. Four hundred dollars is CHEAP for these boots. I don’t even think of them as boots anymore, more like a matching pair of Rolls Royces for the feet. I can see now why you have such a loyal customer base. Thanks for a great product.

Don Merriam

Keep up the great work.

I walked the length of the Pacific Crest Trail (Mexican border to the Canadian border) last summer in my Courtney boots (Ostrich skin) with nary a blister. This was in celebration of my 60th birthday and to commemorate having done it 40 years earlier at age 20. My Courtney boots held up better than the technical mountaineering boots I bought from the North Face lo those many years ago. And everyone at my shooting club still says they’re the best looking shoes they’ve seen. Hell, women even stop me in the grocery store and ask me where I bought them. It doesn’t get any better than that, form and function. I’m going to buy another pair just to be sure I get out of life with them on. Keep up the great work.

Most comfortable boots

The finest, most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn!

Best footwear used in fifty years.

Having just tramped the Zambezi Valley for a week, wearing my new Courteney Safari boots, I must say they are the best footwear I have used in almost fifty years of hunting, farming and wandering. Congratulations on a great product.

I might consider slaughtering the little bugger dog as he just performed some surgery on my wife’s new leather boots and maybe you can produce one attache from his flatskin if production will only start later on again…….

8 days underwater.

We were on the houseboat on Lake Kariba which sank, along with a pair of Courteneys I had bought for a friend in South Africa. We sent divers down to recover our possessions and they managed to retrieve the boots. After 8 days underwater they looked brand new without a mark on them. I’m really thrilled.

Terri Rennie

Most comfortable and durable boots i ever owned.

While in Zimbabwe with the US military I purchased a pair of your “Safari” boots. Since then I wear them almost exclusively. They have been the most comfortable and durable boots I have ever owned and I absolutely love them.

How to Choose your Safari Shoes

By Author cristina garcia

Posted on Published: December 26, 2017  - Last updated: August 1, 2023

When preparing for an African safari there are so many things to remember. Vaccinations, insurance, flights, clothes… Then at the last minute you remember the shoes! What are the best safari shoes to pack? should I take safari boots instead? Will flip flops do? We’re here to help you answer that question.

My personal recommendation is to not take more than 3 pairs of shoes for safari in total. I used to always take 4 pairs and one would end up never being worn. Shoes are one of the most important items on any trip, but also one of the bulkiest. And if you take the wrong shoes your trip might be ruined. If you are careful about how you choose your safari shoes, you won’t take up unnecessary space in your luggage and you’ll have a great trip.

Here are our recommendations of shoes to take on a safari:

Table of Contents

Safari Shoes for a Walking Safari

Choose an eco friendly flip flop., safari sandals, waterproof safari sandals for your water based safari: okavango delta and beyond, shoes for staying at a lodge.

When you visit Africa to see wildlife, it is very likely that you’ll take a walking safari , even if it’s a short one. And you should! A walking safari will get you closer to the animals, and you will find yourself immersed in their habitat. And you’ll need the best shoes for safari to enjoy it.

choose a good safari shoe if you are going on a walking safari

Getting proper walking safari shoes  is important for several reasons. First of all, if you’re walking in the bush, you need good closed-toe shoes, never flip flops or sandals. I hate to break it to you, but snakes, spiders, and scorpions are never far from your feet. And your toes are delicious. If you are super-paranoid about being bitten by a snake, take  mid or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes so your ankles are also covered. I personally think it’s overkill to wear tall hiking boots and they’re not that comfortable in the hot months. My feet suffer from claustrophobia. For me, low-height hybrid hiking shoe/ trainers are the perfect safari shoes.

safari shoes south africa

I always bring my KEEN hiking shoes . They are an older model of the Targhee II. I just love them. I bought them second hand (they were hardly worn and I was super broke) a few years ago for our week-long hike in Yellowstone and have been using them ever since (that makes them 6 year old!). They are breathable and they dry super quick. This is handy if you are clumsy like me and tend to accidentally step into creeks and rivers. Keen hiking shoes have what they call KeenDry ( a waterproof breathable membrane). Not just a gimmick, it totally works and they are dry within a couple hours. When choosing your walking safari shoes, I always recommend to get shoes that are waterproof and breathable .

For an African safari I also wear  hike ultra light smartwool socks . I know, wool sounds hot, but they wick moisture well and you can wear them for many days and they don’t smell. It’s amazing! Since my hiking shoes are the most bulky shoes that I take on an African safari, they are the ones I wear on the plane. Make sure you choose hiking shoes that also function well for daily wear, and not some that will end up in the bottom of your wardrobe for months.

Here are our favorite walking safari shoes for women, safari shoes for men, and also a couple of safari boots:

Shoes for Camping while on a Safari

If you are like us and prefer to camp while on a safari, you should pack a pair of flip flops to use while showering. Your feet will thank you when using the communal showers.

You can also wear flip flops around camp, but always bear in mind that there might be lots of thorns around. Hal’s flip flops were ruined after just 5 days of camping in Botswana because of it. And some of the thorns are pretty long and thick and can easily puncture through the flip flop and into your feet. Eek! (Photo below.) On a later trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park , Hal got some flip flops with much thicker soles and wore them for 5 weeks straight, no problem! We advise not to wear flip flops at night since there might be snakes or scorpions around and you won’t see them in the dark. Cover your feet at night.

a thorn in my safari shoes, South Africa

Our favorite eco friendly flip flop companies are:

Patagonia : Their Environmental and Social Responsibility   is known worldwide. They  donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations around the world. For example, through grants and donations, Patagonia supports Buffalo Field Campaign, a non profit that protects Yellowstone’s wild buffalo and their habitat.

Chaco : I own a pair of Chaco flip flops and I love them. I also just found out about their sustainability. Their ReChaco program allows you to send your old Z/sandal for repairs (resoled or restrapped) for free. Almost 300,000 sandals have been repaired so far, keeping a lot of still usable shoes off the landfill. Also, the webbing on their sandals is made of recycled plastic bottles! I own the Chaco’s Chillos flip flop on the color Sadie Sparrow. This ones are great to wear around campgrounds, and they are fine if they get a little wet. For men, I’d try the Chaco Men’s Lowdown Flip Flop . These are lightweight and have a 3.0 MM lug outsole for no slip traction.

safari shoes south africa

Olli : Natural and fair trade flip flops. Made from natural rubber, these flip flops are also good for the people who make them. Olli is a partner of the the Fair Rubber Association in Sri Lanka. Every pair of flip-flops that you buy will provide education, safe working conditions, & improve the life of the very people who made them! Search Olli flip flops now .

While you can wear flip flops as your everyday shoe in hot weather, my preferred choice for safari shoes are good quality sandals with a thick sole and with a bit more foot support. Thick soles are for the thorn issues and support for comfort. You can use them camping, around the lodge, or even on a light hike if you don’t want to take hiking shoes (but always use closed shoes when hiking in the bush, seriously). My favorites are from from companies that build high quality sandals that last a long time like Taos Footwear (my absolute favorite!) or Merrell’s sandals.  A nice pair of safari sandals will be your go-to shoe on a safari so don’t skimp.

Perfect safari shoes

If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the Okavango delta on a mokoro or kayaking or any other water-based activities you need some good water sandals with an ankle strap. Flip flops might get stuck in the mud and you don’t want to lose them underwater. The perfect safari sandals for this would be something like Chacos’s sandals or Teva’s sandals .

If you are splurging and treating yourself to a nice lodge stay, you might want to give your dusty sandals a rest and wear something more fancy for dinner time. A pair of black or brown shoes/sandals go with everything and you can also wear them if you go out into town.

safari shoes south africa

I love Taos Footwear, and I have a few of their sandals. I take my black Taos Trophy sandal to wear around cities and around the lodge at dinner time. It is cute, super comfy, and can take short hikes. I also take a pair of Taos Perfect sandal . Yes, it is called perfect, and I would agree! Super comfy, extra cute, and can also take you on short and easy hikes. Mine is the ‘bruschetta’ color. Since I have the other sandals in black, I wanted something more colorful.

safari shoes south africa

  • You’re most important shoe is an every day comfortable sandal .
  • If you are going to do any nature walking at all (and you really ought to!) then a closed-toed lightweight hiking shoe is a must have . If you can only take two pairs of shoes, wear these on the plane and pack your sandals.
  • If you have a little extra room then throw in some light weight flip flops for around camp. Or go nuts and take a cute pair of dressier shoes for those nights out and dinners at the lodge.
  • And if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in and out of the water, bring a good heavy-duty sandal with ankle straps like a Teva or Chaco.

We hope our recommendations have helped you choose the right shoes to wear on safari for your next adventure!

I enjoyed reading your article, but I have some questions. My wife and I are leaving for a stay at Governors Safari camp on the Mara river in two weeks (December 2 2019). We've never been on this type of trip. We've been following the weather forecasts...they've had plenty of rain and it looks like it will rain while we're there. I have no idea how much we'll be walking in the bush, it's a 4x4 deal, I'd rather be able to get by with some sturdy sandals but I'm thinking we might need waterproof leather hiking shoes/boots. Your thoughts?

Hal Brindley

Sunday 24th of November 2019

Hi Jim, Sounds like a great trip! I think some good low waterproof hiking shoes would do the trick. (or mid-height if you want more ankle support or deeper mud/water) They're good for everyday wearing (they basically look like sneakers) Cristina has a pair of Keen shoes that have lasted her forever. Here's an example of a low Keen waterproof hiking shoe that I use for everyday use and is very functional in muddy hiking conditions Keen Men's Oakenridge waterproof shoes (unless you get into water/mud more than a couple inches deep, then I switch over to rubber boots!) I hope that's helpful! Have a great trip! -Hal

The history of the Safari vellies

Veldskoene (pronounced “FELT-skoona”), also known as vellies (pronounced “FELL-ys”), are traditional South African walking shoes made of vegetable-tanned leather or soft rawhide leather uppers or suede that are bonded to a leather footbed and rubber sole without the use of tacks or nails.

Vellie skoene (shoe) is derived from Afrikaans vel (“skin”), which was later amalgamated with veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field”) and veld (“field (“shoes”). They were founded in the 17th century by the first Dutch settlers in South Africa. The traditional Khoisan footwear that these settlers have seen is said to have influenced their design. Velskoene got embedded in the Afrikaaner mind when they were used as the Great Trek’s footwear, and they will be a part of our culture for a long time.

Vellies became ingrained in South African, Zimbabwean (previously Rhodesian), and Namibian culture, and were worn by individuals of all classes and professions, often without socks, but especially by students, farmers, and safari guides. The desert boot was popularized by C&J Clark, Nathan Clark’s shoe company, which was inspired by veldskoens’ round toe and shape. The shape and design of the veldskoene he saw for sale in Cairo bazaars were influenced by veldskoene imported from South Africa.

Take note of the more modern sole design..

Safari Vellies , also known as light boots, are essentially a subclass of chukka boots or desert boots, with the exception that vellies have a lower topline. This range of shoes on our website you have available in assorted colored soles.

Safari veldskoen

Safari Vellie Veldskoene soles are occasionally made using old vehicle tires rather than crepe rubber.

South African Safari Veldskoen Vellies is a timeless favorite. It’s constructed the old-fashioned way, with top-quality leather, for added comfort and durability. The leather and suede we utilize for a pair of our Safari vellie veldskoen are designed to be comfortable and long-lasting.

Safari Veldskoen Shoes

These Safari veldskoen shoes are not only made in South Africa, but they are also incredibly fashionable. Wear them to a braai or to the office, and they will transport you to your destination in style. Your Safari vellies are the perfect addition to your wardrobe.

Purchasing goods over the internet

To get the proper shoe size for your Safari veldskoen, stand on a piece of paper and draw a line from the longest toe to the heel, that will give you the measurement of your foot. Don’t measure only your footprint, it needs to be from your heel to your toe.

The veldskoen vellies are available in a variety of styles and colors; choose your favorite or multiples 😉

The best shoes for your specific safari.

Kenya, Masai Mara, Safari

How Long Is Your Trip?

When it comes to picking the best safari shoes, we need to remember what’s right for one person and their trip isn’t right for everyone.

That’s why I want to kick off this article, by getting you to think about your specific trip and what shoes might best suit your needs.

To start with, you need to think about where, when and how long you’re planning to safari for.

If you’re simply visiting one country in Africa on a short 1 week trip, then you may be able to take a couple of pairs of different shoes because you won’t be limited by weight in the same way as if you’re undertaking a long overland trip through many countries in Africa, likely living out of a backpack you have to carry.

On a short trip therefore, where you’re likely to have a suitcase you can wheel around, taking a few pairs of shoes might not be such a problem.

If you’ve got a heavy backpack to carry, you might limit yourself to just one!

Where and When Are You Going on Safari?

safari shoes south africa

Next, we need to consider where and when you’re going to safari i.e. in which country and at what time of year.

This will drastically affect what the best shoes for your safari are, because you may need something waterproof if travelling in the rainy season, something well insulated if it’s likely to be cold, or something breathable if you’re travelling in the height of summer.

For example, the jungles of East Africa (if you’re heading to see the gorillas ) have very damp, humid conditions then certainly require boots that are waterproof and have good grip.

Compare this is to travelling to Etosha National Park in Namibia in the height of summer, where the dry, desert-like conditions here and searing heat, mean keeping your feet cool will be of greatest importance.

What Type of Safari Are You Taking?

safari shoes south africa

The third thing to think about when considering what the best shoes for your African safari might be is the type of safari you’ll be enjoying.

Full driving safaris, which are common in parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya , where dangerous predators mean you can’t exit a vehicle, will necessitate very different footwear to if you’re enjoying a walking safari with rhinos in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) or Zimbabwe, where physical trekking on uneven ground will mean good, study boots are very important.

Ditto, a luxury safari where vehicles are a bit more comfortable means you may want to take shoes that are lighter than a rough, budget 4wd safari vehicle, where sturdy shoes that prevent your feet from knocks and bumps might be a better idea.

If you’re staying in a lodge, a more relaxed sandal will be more appropriate than if you’re wild camping and need some protection for those toilet trips in the night!

When it comes to the best safari shoes for you therefore, a little time to think about what type of trip you are likely to undertake, where, when and how long for, will certainly help you prepare the best footwear.

And if you’re looking for ideas about the best safari experience, why not check out this great range of options that cover some of the top wildlife attractions and national parks across the continent.

4 Safari-Specific Shoe Suggestions

And to get you thinking a little more, here’s 4 suggestions to help you narrow down your research…

#1 For gorilla trekking in Uganda, these waterproof and sturdy Salomon Quest Gore-Tex boots have excellent grip, tread and high ankle support to cope with the rough jungle conditions underfoot, as well as keep your feet well protected from any nasty creatures!

#2 For safaris in desert countries like Namibia, where it’s very hot and dry and you’re largely staying instead a vehicle due to the risk of predators, then a good supported and sturdy sandal, will probably be best for keeping your feet cool yet comfortable, making these Arizona Birkenstocks ideal for the job.

#3 For walking safaris in hot Southern African countries like Swaziland or Zimbabwe, something inbetween a big clumpy boot and a sandal will be best. I highly suggest a walking shoe if this is something that’s likely to feature on your itinerary, because not only do they have good grip and support with a thick sole, but they also keep your foot well-ventilated and are flexible, low-rise and light for any quick movements you may have to make. These North Face Hedgehog Fastpack GTX are a good option because they are waterproof too – handy if there’s a heavy dew in the morning!

#4 And finally, for safaris in humid countries such as Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, something light, comfy and airy, but that will protect your feet from knocks and bumps in a 4wd vehicle, will be best. In this case, a trail runner shoe, like these New Balance Fresh Foams would be perfect.

Practical Points to Think About For Your Safari Shoes

Safari shoe colour.

One thing I know a lot of people think about when it comes to the best shoes for their African safari is colour… because I get a lot of questions about this!

And while colour doesn’t matter a huge amount, I always suggest a natural shade like black, grey, brown, navy or dark green are best.

There are a few reasons for this, although none have very much to do with the wildlife, given most safari animals only see in black and white.

Instead, natural colours make for the best safari shoes in my opinion, simply because a) they match with most other clothing colours well, which makes packing a lot easier and b) they show up the dirt less, which makes cleaning them (or not) a lot easier!

I also personally think natural colours look a lot more stylish than say, a bright pink pair, but this is a cosmetic point, rather than anything practical and certainly down to personal choice.

Waterproofing

We’ve touched on this already, but if you’re travelling anywhere in Africa during the rainy season, waterproof safari shoes are a must.

Even outside of rainy season, humid conditions in East Africa make waterproof boots necessary in my opinion.

Equally, heavy morning dews, which are not uncommon in Southern Africa, make a safari shoe made from Gore-Tex a good option here too.

Temperature

safari shoes south africa

Safari shoes that keep your feet cool through good ventilation, will definitely make your safari a more enjoyable experience, especially if you’re travelling in the summer season in Southern Africa, for example, where the temperatures can be scorching between the months of December and February.

However, travelling here in the winter months (June to August) can be very cold and in this case, a warm, well-insulated boot would be best.

As travellers, we always need to consider weight when packing and selecting something lightweight as your safari shoe of choice is a great option.

Not only will this keep luggage weight down, but having a big, clumpy boot on your foot when you’re clambering in and out of safari vehicles, trying to set up camp or going trekking is never fun.

Of course, you have to balance this against protection, but do remember that as light as possible is a good motto to stick to in my book.

And so we get to protection.

A good sole is very important on any safari shoe in order to help support the arch of your foot and protect it from knocks and bumps.

Ankle support can range from a low-rise trainer, runner or walking shoe, to a full height hiking boot, so whatever you choose, just make sure they fit snuggly around the ankle to offer it support.

When it comes to protection, a mid-length hiking boot can be a good option here, balancing the best of both worlds in terms of protection and weight.

Flexibility

safari shoes south africa

Again, it’s about a trade-off when it comes to protection vs flexibility in a safari shoe, but generally, I would lean towards something lighter and more flexible than something heavy and stiffer.

This is the problem with very sturdy leather hiking boots in my opinion, they are just too heavy and too stiff.

A light, mid-length hiking boot, made from breathable Gore-Tex, or a sturdy trail running shoe with good support and a thick sole, would make much better options if you ask me.

But one feature where you shouldn’t compromise, is grip.

This is key in any safari shoe you choose and whether it’s a good sandal, a light runner or a sturdy hiking boot, good grip is a must.

5 Top Safari Shoes Based on Practical Features

#1 For a lovely natural coloured shoe that goes with most things and won’t show up the dirt easily, these Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX walking shoes are perfect.

#2 For waterproofing points, I really do think these Keen Terradora waterproof hiking boots are hard to beat. They are mid-length too, which means good ankle support, but less weight.

#3 When it comes to temperature, if you need something that will keep your feet warm, but that is also breathable, these Saucony Peregrine trail runners are superb and also offer excellent grip and good protection.

#4 If a lightweight safari shoe is crucial to you, then maybe stick to a simple runner or trainer as your footwear of choice. These New Balance 880v9 GTX are waterproof and weigh less than 300 grams! Good protection and durability too.

#5 And in terms of flexibility, it’s hard to look past the Asics Metarun , which have a Gel technology that not only makes them super responsive, but also 55% lighter than your standard pair of runners.

DON’T HEAD OUT ON SAFARI WITHOUT THESE OTHER 5 ESSENTIALS

#1 Binoculars – They don’t’ need to be expensive, but my cheap Eurohike pair were a great investment.

#2 Toilet Paper – Bush toilets don’t generally provide it!

#3 Natural Sunscreen & Sun Hat – Things get hot on safari so do be prepared.

#4 Good Camera & Lens – An absolute must if you’re looking to capture the incredible landscape and wildlife. I love my mirrorless Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and robust – ideal for Africa travel.

#5 Sarong – Whether it’s covering your shoulders from the sun, using as a pillow on long bus journeys or protecting yourself from dust on safari, a sarong is a great multi-purpose travel item for Africa.

Best Women’s Shoes for an African Safari

Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, Me at the Falls

I’m putting in this section about the best women’s shoes for an African safari quite simply because many women email me with this question, so ladies I’m dedicating this part to you!

We’ve touched on the colour issue above, but to reiterate, I highly suggest keeping it stylish and coordinated with natural colour footwear that is grey or black.

I’d also see if you can extend your shoe allowance to 2 pairs – both a good mid-length hiking boot / decent walking shoe and a pair of excellent, support sandals will come in very handy.

This should allow you to cover most bases in terms of walking / vehicle safaris and chilling at a lodge / camping, as well as across both South and East Africa if you’re on a long trip.

Remember your feet will swell in the heat and you might be using your hiking boot with a thick sock, so factor these elements in too when trying on your safari shoe.

Speaking from my own experience as a female traveller, I wore my Birkenstock sandals during almost all my safaris in Southern Africa because it was so hot.

However, in East Africa, I wore nothing but by brown Doc Martens due to the wet and muddy conditions.

Note these weren’t ideal, but I was on a huge overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town at the time, so these were the type of boots that covered all bases – fashion and practical – for such a diverse adventure.

3 Best Safari Shoes for Women

#1 I know I keep banging on about them, but it’s just so hard to beat a good pair of Arizona Birkenstocks if you’re looking for the perfect safari sandal ladies.

#2 For a good walking shoe, I just think North Face Litewave are a lovely light and stylish option for women.

#3 And for boots, Merell Siren are light, mid-length, waterproof and about as pretty as a hiking boot can get!

3 Best Overall Pairs of Safari Shoes

South Africa, Kruger National Park, Male Elephant

With this information in mind therefore, you can see that it’s actually impossible to nail down just 1 pair of shoes that are the best shoes for an African safari.

It’s a bit like saying, what are the best shoes for your Europe?

Well, it depends on where you’re going, when and what you’ll be doing there.

Same applies to safari shoes, but based on my experiences in Southern, East, Northern and the Horn of Africa, I’ve come up with 3 great pairs that between them cover all eventualities.

Read on to discover what my overall 3 best shoes for an Africa safari are…. and why!

And, don’t forget, if you’re struggling to decide where to safari (it’s confusing I know!) then check out these top safari tour picks for some seriously super inspiration!

#1 Teva Women’s Tirra Sandal

What I like most about these sandals compared to other women’s activewear sandals is their graceful appearance, with thin straps, which are perfect for long, thin feet like mine!

As one of the original activewear sandal brands Teva are experts in their field and these Tirra models are waterproof with a strong, secure strapping configuration that offers multiple adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.

In addition to this, the shoc pad technology offers superb comfort, with a durable footbed giving super support and spider rubbles soles providing some great grip.

Ideal for Southern Africa in particular, the great ventilation of these shoes is just what you want for the dry, hot conditions in this part of the continent in peak safari season.

Light, quick and easy to slip on and off, these sandals will take up little room in your luggage.

Available in a huge range of colours, the comfortable and supporting Teva’s Women Tirra Sandals would be an excellent choice as one of the best shoes for African safari experiences.

#2 Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe

Good for walking or cycling safaris like Hells Gate National Park in Kenya or Matapos National Park in Zimbabwe , a pair of trail running shoes are the 2 nd pair on my list of the best for shoes for an African safari.

With tons of great brand to choose, I really love this pair of Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes , which are great for all sorts of outdoor adventure, including safaris!

Light and durable, these top safari shoes won’t take up much room or weight in your bag.

They can also double as city footwear, perfect for the more urban areas of Africa or travel days, especially given their breathable mesh panels and excellent ventilation.

In addition to keeping your foot cool when on safari, the mesh panel’s of the Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe are also great for keeping dust and dirt out – an excellent feature in the Africa environment!

The smart cushioning system and rubber outsole also ensure excellent grip and traction.

Perfect for safaris across Africa, these Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes would work during dawn and night safaris, when the cold weather means you’ll need something that completely covers your foot, but isn’t overly bulky or cumbersome.

#3 KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot

When it comes to safari hiking boots, the Keen’s Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot offers unparalleled comfort and durability with excellent value for money.

Breathable, with a protective toe cap and excellent traction, these are definitely one of the best for shoes for African safari trips, such as gorilla trekking in East Africa where the ground is muddy, wet and unstable.

With an outstanding waterproof rating, the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot would actually be the perfect pair of shoes for safaris across East Africa, where it can rain at any time of year and where conditions can quickly become slippery.

In the dense jungle areas of Africa, fire-ants are an additional threat, so having a hiking boot, rather than a lower supporting shoe here, is going to help you combat these pesky insects too.

As hiking boots go, I love the look of the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot , which is pretty stylish as well as practical.

The brown, ‘shitake’ colour scheme they offer are almost fashionable!

You can even wear these on travel days without feeling like the total tourist hiker too!

As well as in East Africa, these are also one of the best shoes for African safari adventures if you are travelling in Southern Africa in the winter (when its freezing and you’ll likely need a boot!) as well as further north in the Horn of Africa.

For example, I wore hiking boots a lot in Ethiopia, in particular when trekking in Simien Mountains National Park and in the Danakil Depression.

If you’re planning a Southern African getaway, you may have a safari or two lined up at the top of your itinerary. But, you may be wondering what to wear on safari. Not only is the African climate different, but spending hours on a game drive requires careful planning to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.

Luckily, we know a thing or two about safaris and the ideal game reserve outfits. We offer Southern African safari tours to some of the most spectacular destinations in Africa and have picked up a few tips along the way.

So, if you’re getting ready for your upcoming safari trip and looking for safari outfit ideas that are practical, versatile and comfortable, we have the ideal guide for you. We’ll cover everything from our top suggestions for safari outfits to some tips on preparing for your trip.

Packing for Safari in Africa: Our Top Tips

Looking for game drive outfit ideas? Here are some of our stand-out tips on packing for your upcoming safari.

Wear Neutral Colours

When packing for a safari trip in South Africa, think cool and comfy clothing for your safari outfits.

Light materials and neutral tones such as beige, khaki, brown and green are great for both keeping cool and blending in with the natural surroundings. However, it is best to steer clear of camouflage clothing as this is associated with trophy hunters and military personnel in many African countries.

Minimise your visibility in the bush by avoiding bright colours such as reds, oranges and blues, as well as white. Other colours to avoid wearing are darker colours such as navy and black, which can attract tsetse flies.

Casual clothing is suitable for just about any African safari, and apart from selecting neutral or muted-coloured clothing, safari attire is generally comfortable and easy.

Suitcase packed for travel

Layering is key

Layering your safari outfits is the most practical way to cope with fluctuating temperatures in the bush. As the day heats up, you can peel a layer off, and when it begins to cool down, you can add another layer.

Pack in plenty of comfortable t-shirts and long-sleeved sweaters with collars that help protect your skin from the sun and mosquitoes. Women may want to purchase comfortable safari dresses that are versatile for game drives and dinners at the lodge. Men may want to invest in a pair of convertible safari pants that turn into shorts.

Wear Sunscreen/Sunblock

While out in the African bush, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF between 30 and 50 to protect your skin from the harsh sun rays.

We love this sunscreen from Neutrogena , which has an SPF of 70. The lodges will more than likely have sunscreen available for guests, but it’s best to bring your own to use at your convenience. If you have sensitive skin, we suggest using a zinc oxide sunblock .

Check the Weather

Do your research online and check what the weather will be like at your vacation destination. If it is the middle of summer, you may not need plenty of winter gear, but a lightweight sweater or jacket may come in handy on cooler nights. Remember to include your swimming suit and sarong!

Prepare for A Little Glamour

We’re not talking suits and evening gowns, just something a little glamorous for your candle-lit dinner under the African sky. While staying at a bush lodge or safari camp, you might want to pack in a pretty dress or crisp shirt for dinner.

If your travel itinerary includes a few nights on the luxurious Rovos Rail, you’ll need to pack in a few glam pieces. Dinners aboard the train are a stylish affair. So if you’re embarking on a rail journey, pack in a pair of fancy shoes and black tie attire.

Curious about this luxury steam train? Read more about our Rovos Rail trip .

Many small regional airlines will have strict weight limits for travel luggage, so it’s best to pack light. These weight limits are usually between 33 and 44 lb but will vary from region to region. It’s best to confirm ahead of your travels. A soft duffel bag is a good option, as hard-shelled and wheeled bags are usually heavier and often not allowed on small planes.

Safari Clothing: What to Wear on a Safari Game Drive

Now that you’ve got a few tips to keep in mind, here’s our list of some essential safari wear to pack for your trip.

Warm Clothing

It is a common misconception that South Africa is always warm. In fact, winters can be freezing, especially during early morning game drives. While the sun is certainly out in summer, the mornings can have a chill to them.

Here, your layers will come in handy so that you can take off or add as it is needed. Bring a waterproof jacket with you for chilly mornings and evenings, when there is a chance of rain. If you’re travelling in winter, squeeze in a pair of gloves and a beanie if you can!

A Comfortable Pair of Sneakers or Hiking Boots

Take a good pair of sneakers or shoes for the game drives and pack in a pair of flip-flops or sandals for downtime around the lodge.

If you plan on doing a hike during your vacation, such as a hik ing tour up Table Mountain or a Drakensberg tour , pack in a pair of thick socks and heavy-duty hiking boots that can also, if required, double up as walking safari shoes.

We’re a big fan of Salomon hiking boots and shoes, particularly the Speedcross trail running range and the hiking boots .

A Wide-Brimmed Hat

The strength of the African sun is powerful. It is essential that you pack a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face and the back of your neck. Neutral colours such as this wide-brimmed hat work well and generally tend to work well with multiple safari outfits.

Pack a good pair of sunglasses with you, as the glare from the sun can give you a headache or hurt your eyes.

Game Drive Outfits: FAQs

Still have a few questions about what to wear in Africa on safari? We’ve answered some frequently asked questions below to help you out.

Q: What colours should I not wear on a safari in Southern Africa? Some of the main colours to avoid on safari in Africa are dark colours like black and navy. These colours attract tsetse flies — that leave a painful bite — and are generally not ideal in hot weather.

Q: What shoes should I wear on a safari? If your safari itinerary includes a walk or two, or you plan on hiking on your trip to Africa, it may be good to pack sturdy hiking shoes. However, multi-purpose sneakers will also do, especially if your safari does not include much walking. Ensure your shoes are broken in before your trip so that they’re as comfortable as possible.

Q: Can I wear bright colours on safari? Wearing bright colours is not recommended for a safari as these colours easily draw attention and may scare wildlife — which is the last thing you want on a game drive. It is best to wear neutral or pastel-coloured clothing that easily blends in with the surroundings. Bright colours, especially bright shades of blue are also known to attract tsetse flies and are thus best avoided.

Q: What kind of pants should I wear on safari? You can wear whatever pants are comfortable for you on a game drive — whether that be jeans, chinos, or shorts — as long as it’s loose-fitting, comfortable and light in colour. Pants that convert into shorts with a quick zip motion are a convenient option as you can easily change to shorts as the day heats up. Note that if you are going on a walking safari, short pants are not recommended.

Q: What are ideal safari clothes for ladies? Safari wear for ladies usually includes loose-fitting chinos or jeans and comfortable dresses and shirts in neutral tones and lightweight fabrics. You may also want to pack a pair of sandals to wear around the lodge.

The Complete Guide to What to Wear on A Safari in South Africa

Many people visit South Africa for its wildlife, especially to see the Big 5 of wild animals. Doing an African safari is an experience of a lifetime for these people, and preparing helps you enjoy this unique experience. Here you can learn more about what to wear on a safari in South Africa.

What consider when deciding what to wear on Safari in South Africa

There are two main factors to consider when you are going on a Safari in South Africa and need to plan what to wear:

Time of The Year and The Weather

The seasons in South Africa are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. When countries, such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, have summer, it is Winter in South Africa. South Africa has summer when those countries have their winter season.

When you should visit South Africa depends on your specific travel needs. It is always helpful to consider the seasons in your destination when planning a trip. South Africa’s summers are hot and may be humid, depending on the province you visit.

What to wear on safari in south africa Pin 1

The nature reserves and wildlife areas may be green and lush during the summer. Many animals give birth during summer, and if you are lucky, you may spot one of these newborn wild animals. South African winters are usually mild and dry unless you visit Cape Town , where the rainy season occurs in Winter. It may be easier to spot wildlife during Winter, as the vegetation is dry and sparse compared to summer. Pleasant times to visit South Africa are autumn (fall) and spring, when the weather is perfect for exploring this beautiful country!

Other Countries You May Also Visit and Their Weather

What to wear on safari in South Africa

Suppose you plan a trip that includes South Africa and other African countries. In that case, it is essential to remember that Southern Africa’s climate differs slightly from these countries, especially those in Eastern Africa. Whereas countries in East Africa have hot and dry seasons, South Africa’s hot season may have cooler evenings and mornings. It also rains in South Africa’s warmer seasons. South Africa’s cooler seasons are also its dry season when other African countries have rain with cooler weather.

Your Baggage Allowance

When planning what to wear on Safari in South Africa, consider your baggage allowance. With international flights, airlines allow up to 30kgs in baggage. You may not get the same allowance when flying domestically within South Africa . For example, many domestic airlines charge extra for any checked luggage or only offer up to 23 kgs in checked luggage for free. For flights from Johannesburg to Kruger National park or Sun City , you may even fly with a small aircraft, and it could have a lower luggage allowance. Make sure what the luggage allowance is when planning your Safari outfits.

Don’t take too many Safari clothes with you. Instead, wash your clothing more often to avoid over-packing. You can find laundry facilities or day laundry service at most hotels, game reserves and national parks in South Africa.

What to Wear on Safari in South Africa and Other Things to Pack

Here you will find some information to help you decide what to pack on a game drive in South Africa. Take these items with you to make the most of your safari without worrying about what you’re wearing:

Lightweight, Airy Clothing in Neutral Colours

If you’re wondering what to wear on a game drive in South Africa, it is important to always take comfortable casual clothing. If your safari is summer, you will appreciate lightweight, airy clothing as the African sun can become scorching.

What Colours to Wear on Safari in South Africa

The best Safari clothing is lightweight items in neutral colours. You don’t want to wear black in summer. Instead, take clothing in neutral colours, such as beige, brown, khaki, light green or blue.

Avoid white clothing as it will quickly get dirty from the dust roads while on safari. Other colours to avoid include bright colours, such as red and yellow, since animals can spot you from a distance when you don’t blend into the bush environment. Also, avoid wearing dark colours, such as purple and black, which attract Tsetse flies when you’re on a game drive. Darker clothes also attract heat, which is not ideal on a hot summer’s day.

Types of Clothing to Take

The best way to plan your Safari outfits is to be practical. Take simple clothing items, such as lightweight, quick-dry t-shirts, long pants and a jacket for a warm layer for the cooler evenings and mornings. Take shirts with short and long sleeves to cater to the different times of the day.

You can consider bringing a beanie, scarf, and gloves if you are doing a Safari in Winter. Although you may have hot days, the mornings, late afternoons and evenings may be cool, and when you are sitting on the back of a moving Safari vehicle for a game drive, the breeze may be icy cold.

Rain Jacket

If you’re visiting South Africa in summer, prepare for rainy weather by taking one or more rain jackets. Sometimes Safari vehicles have a close top, but wearing a waterproof jacket can help any rain entering from the sides of the vehicle.

A fancier outfit for special dinners

If you’re planning a dinner at a lodge or hotel with formal dress codes, you need to pack a slightly fancier outfit than what you would wear during the day while on safari. This may include dress shoes or a lovely scarf.

If you’re doing a safari in summer, always take a swimsuit! You’ll be grateful for a dip in a pool to cool down.

You are most likely not only visiting South Africa for a Safari. Whether you visit South Africa in Winter or summer, you may want to swim in the warmer seas of the KwaZulu-Natal Province or in a heated swimming pool elsewhere. Most hotels and lodges provide pool towels, but it is good to take a quick-dry towel.

Sun Protection Gear

Don’t underestimate the African sun. When you’re on safari, you may be in a Safari vehicle with a cover, but you may also go on one or more bush walks or spend a significant amount of your time outdoors in the pleasant South African weather. Be prepared by bringing sunscreen , sunglasses , a sun hat and lip balm. Make sure the hat offers UV protection and has a wide brim. Don’t take a baseball cap as they don’t protect the back of your neck or the sides of your face – they are not the best option for a safari in South Africa.

What Shoes to Wear on Safari in South Africa

You spend most of your time on your feet when travelling. Comfortable footwear is critical for you to enjoy your trip.

Although hiking shoes sound ideal for a Safari, they are often heavy and too warm for a summer safari. When visiting South Africa for a Safari, the best shoe option is a pair of old runners or tennis shoes. Only bring shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring hiking shoes only if you plan a hike.

It is also good to have a pair of sandals or flip-flops for walking around inside your unit, by the pool or while showering. Flip-flops are also perfect when you go to the beach to protect your feet from the hot sand.

Water Bottle

Another essential thing to pack for a safari is a reusable water bottle . Take fresh water to keep hydrated, especially when visiting South Africa in summer. The good news is that South African tap water is safe to drink.

Insect Repellent

Protect yourself from mosquitos, tsetse flies and other insects by wearing insect repellent , but especially while on safari or at night.

Having a small day bag with you when heading out on a safari is a great idea. You can keep everything you need in this bag during the day. Good options include a small backpack or cross-body bag . You can keep your sunglasses, camera and water bottle in the bag.

Let customers speak for us

In my constant search for perfect understated flip flop. I encountered these in search and felt they met criteria. So after a week of deliberation I decided to acquire a pair for my business trips to Florida and Newport RI. I have not taken them off since.

These break in right away and are built on a wide last. Very comfortable!

I love my Vellies for walks and for their styling. They are very comfortable (follow the measuring advice from them), especially with the thicker socks that I wear. The soles appear to be superior to other similar shoes.

So far the recipient loves them!

I love everything VELDSKOEN, however these sandals got me a little confused. My normal size is 9 when I tried those there was some sole space left in the back of the shoe. I decided to change to 8 and I still have the same issue. Maybe elastic could be added in the strap that goes around the back of the ankle. Great design overall. Also, it would be great to mid sizes like 8.5 or 9.5.

As it appears from the name, HKR Women’s Walking Shoes are made for walking. This means they are extra comfortable walking long distances without feeling any pressure on their feet. Wearing these shoes is just a slip-on. You do nothing except slip your feet inside the flexible shoes. Yes! They’re very flexible as they’re mainly fabrics that stretch a bit with your feet. We’re that you have one of those or at least thought of getting one of them before. Yet, we’re now presenting them as one of the best shoes for a safari. If you want to feel comfortable during the whole trip, don’t hesitate to get these sneakers. The sneakers might seem very casual to wear on a safari. However, those sneakers are one of the most durable options you’ll find on the list. We recommend you go for this black option as it won’t get dirty as easily as the white ones. As the name suggests, they’re sock sneakers which means they feel like socks on your feet. What makes them perfect safari shoes is their lightweight, durable construction. They provide your feet with the comfort and breathability they need without being very flimsy on the ground. Above all, they’re easy to pack in a small travel bag so that you may use them for any trip.

Although some people believe suede is for classic shoes only, these shoes have changed it all. The suede fabrics enhance the look, and at the same time, they won’t get ruined as they’re very good quality.

  • These shoes fit perfectly and are comfortable to wear
  • They’re made from high-quality materials
  • They’re breathable
  • They’re slightly heavy

How To Choose The Best shoes for a safari

Safari shoes are nothing different from hiking, walking, or travel shoes. A good pair of shoes for hiking and active use can be the best shoes for a safari. However, there are some features you need to make sure of in your safari shoes. Let’s check them out.

A safari trip means you’ll be walking, hiking, driving a beach buggy, or doing whatever activities all the time. Thus, you need an extra comfy thing on your feet. Always go for cushioned shoes with rubber outsoles to feel comfortable. Also, make sure they perfectly fit your feet.

There are different types of safari shoes. You can pick the boots for winter safari trips or wear casual sneakers. Both are good for a safari, but the weather determines what to choose. If it’s summer, pick a breathable pair of sneakers. Alternatively, in winter and snowy weather, get waterproof boots.

Price is always an important factor when purchasing anything. Some safari shoes are as cheap as $25, and others are $200+. You might like a pair of safari boots, but you can’t afford them. So, always decide on the budget before browsing the options. The best thing here is that you’ll always find something on a budget.

The best shoes for a safari are the comfortable shoes you’ll normally wear when doing any activities. These can be hiking boots or traditional walking and running sneakers according to the kind of safari trips you usually go on.

Of course, you can! Yet, make sure the sneakers are breathable if you’re traveling to a hot country. Also, ensure that the sneakers you choose are very comfortable to suit a safari trip.

Nothing is different between men’s and women’s options for a safari trip. You can even find options for men’s and women’s safari shoes from the same brand and series.
