Meet Safari Web Extensions on iOS

Safari extensions

Enhance and customize the web browsing experience on iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Safari extensions. Using powerful native APIs and frameworks, as well as familiar web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, you can easily create Safari extensions in Xcode and distribute them on the App Store in the Extensions category. Xcode 12 and later supports the popular WebExtension API and includes a porting tool to make it easy to bring your extensions to Safari.

Blocking content

Give users the ability to block certain content types on Safari iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Built with Xcode, these app extensions are designed for speed and don’t slow down browsing. And because extensions never see what webpages users visit, user data is protected.

Web extensions

Extend the web-browsing experience by allowing Safari to read and modify web page content. Now supported in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Safari web extensions are available on all Apple devices that support Safari. These extensions are built with Xcode and can communicate and share data with native apps — so you can integrate app content into Safari or send web data back to your app to create a unified experience.

Distributing and managing extensions

The Extensions category on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac showcases Safari extensions, with editorial spotlights and top charts to help people discover and download great extensions from the developer community. When your Safari extension is ready to be released, upload it to App Store Connect for distribution on the App Store. Apple reviews all extensions and updates to ensure they work reliably. Before submitting for review, make sure to read the guidelines for extensions .

Converting extensions from other browsers

Web extensions that work in browsers other than Safari can be converted to support Safari on Apple platforms. Run the command-line web extension converter to create an Xcode project configured with a macOS app and/or iOS or iPadOS app that includes an extension that can be enabled in Safari.

Upgrading macOS Safari web extensions to support iOS and iPadOS

It's easy to upgrade an existing macOS Safari web extension to also support iOS and iPadOS. Simply rerun your project through the command-line web extension converter tool with the --rebuild-project option. This will create a new Xcode project based on your existing project that includes extensions for these platforms.

Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Developer Response ,

Hi, The blue icon is not something we can change -- Apple does not provide the functionality to gray out the icon if a app is active on a particular page. Because AdBlock is allowing ads, according to Apple, that means it's active. We wish we could change the behavior but we can't! Please do provide your feedback to Apple since this is something they can change. --AdBlock Support

Ad Block forever

Ad Block customer (forever). My MacBook and I - as an internet user(s) can never be without Ad Block. My daily 16 hours internet viewing and/or usage would not be as enjoyable, time efficient or educational - if I was constantly distracted with solitations, promotional items and marketing of products sent to me that I never need or will never purchase - I would not own a computer.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear AdBlock has improved your browsing experience. --AdBlock Support

Stopped Working

I've been using this specific adblock for years and although it works on some of the other machines I own it has stopped working as intended recently. Every now and then an ad would slip by which a quick refresh would fix but now ads still pop up but are blacked out with audio still coming from the ads. I don't think this recent behaviour is deserving of anything less than 3 stars but imo is no longer that 5 star product I used to love.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 193 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview Feature

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

I'm always curious about these Safari Tech Preview posts. Are they just a quick way to add another headline? I suspect so, as I don't see many people trusting these builds as their daily driver. I've tried that in the past, but it never stuck.

I understand you're having trouble connecting to the App Store and Safari is giving you a "secure connection" error. This can be frustrating, but there are a few things we can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Connectivity:

  • Check your internet connection:  Make sure your device is connected to the internet with a strong signal. Try opening other websites in Safari to confirm. If you're on Wi-Fi, try restarting your router. If you're using cellular data, make sure it's enabled and has a good signal.
  • Date and Time:  Ensure your device's date and time settings are accurate.Incorrect settings can interfere with secure connections.
  • Check for updates:  Update your device's operating system to the latest version. This often includes bug fixes and security updates that can resolve connectivity issues.
  • Sign out and Sign in:  Sign out of your Apple ID from the App Store app and then sign back in. This can sometimes refresh your connection.
  • Check App Store status:  Visit Apple's System Status page ( Apple - Support - System Status ) to see if there are any reported issues with the App Store.
  • Clear browsing data:  Try clearing your browser cache, cookies, and history. This can sometimes resolve issues caused by outdated data.
  • Check extensions:  Temporarily disable any extensions you have installed in Safari. Some extensions can interfere with website connections.
  • Try a different browser:  If the issue persists in Safari, try using a different browser like Chrome or Firefox to see if you can connect to the App Store.

Additional Tips:

  • Restart your device:  Sometimes a simple restart can fix temporary glitches.
  • Contact Apple Support:  If none of the above suggestions work, you can contact Apple Support for further assistance. They may have more specific information about the issue you're facing.

Remember, I cannot diagnose the exact cause of the problem without more information. However, by following these steps, you can hopefully get back to using the App Store and Safari normally.

Resources for Businesses

With Business Connect, businesses can directly manage their information in the interactive Apple Maps place card, including creating Custom Action Links that direct users to their website or preferred platform and make it easy for customers to place orders, reserve a table, and more, right from the place card.
  • Apple Business Essentials , one complete subscription that seamlessly brings together device management, 24/7 support, and cloud storage. Business owners can easily manage the Apple devices in their organizations and scale up as they grow. 1
  • Tap to Pay on iPhone , which provides businesses with an easy, secure, and private way to accept in-person contactless payments. This includes contactless debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, using only an iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app — no additional hardware or payment terminal needed. Tap to Pay on iPhone uses the built-in features of iPhone to keep business and customer data private and secure. 2

Apple introduces a new series of Today at Apple programming for small business owners and entrepreneurs

Beginning in May, a special Today at Apple series titled “ Made for Business ” will offer small business owners and entrepreneurs free opportunities to learn how Apple products and services can support their growth and success. Led by small business owners, the sessions will highlight how these organizations have used Apple products such as iPhone, iPad, and Mac — along with resources such as Apple Business Connect, Apple Business Essentials, and Tap to Pay on iPhone — to build their businesses, reach customers in new ways, and push their organizations forward.

“At Apple, we know small businesses are the backbone of local communities, which is why we are constantly innovating to help at every stage of their growth,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail. “Our retail stores provide only-at-Apple experiences such as community and education sessions, free Today at Apple programming, and ongoing support from in-store experts who help small businesses find the perfect technology to supercharge their work.”

Kicking off during National Small Business Week in the U.S., Today at Apple will offer six “Made for Business” sessions throughout May in Chicago, Miami, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., with ongoing programming in select stores around the world throughout the year. Led by small business owners with diverse and unique stories, the sessions will highlight how Apple products and services have powered their businesses’ success.

One of those businesses is Washington, D.C.-based Mozzeria, a Deaf-owned pizzeria founded with a mission to provide customers with a warm, memorable, and visually captivating experience of Deaf culture. During the session at Apple Carnegie Library, Theodore Miller, Mozzeria’s director of National Operations, will demonstrate how the restaurant’s staff leverages Apple’s accessibility features to help break down barriers and empower the business.

“To build a truly inclusive and community-driven business, we must focus on putting people first. That means adapting our technology and practices to be more accessible. Apple’s innovations have been key in helping us boost efficiency and connect with customers,” said Miller. “Whether it’s using Dictation on iPhone or iPad for speech to text in the Notes app, or enabling Live Captions for phone calls, Apple’s tools help bridge communication gaps and set higher standards for businesses in today’s fast-paced world.”

In Apple Store locations, dedicated business teams, known as Business Pros and Business Experts, are available to support small businesses at every stage of their growth. Whether a business owner is looking to learn which products and services are right for their team, or interested in expanding their use of Apple’s tools, Business Pros can help curate personalized solutions, facilitate easy purchasing and shipping, and help small businesses get set up with Apple resources, including:

Apple technology is woven into the fabric of small businesses, and has enabled design and manufacturing company Sock Club to grow from a small subscription service into a bespoke textile company.

“We’re excited to be in a period of rapid growth. Apple is a key enabler of that,” said Noah Lee, Sock Club’s co-founder.

The small business relies on Business Essentials to deploy and configure the company’s entire fleet of Apple devices from Texas to North Carolina remotely — allowing the team to concentrate on the business, not tech support.

“Apple Business Essentials offers a platform to scale business operations, making onboarding new employees and setting up new Apple devices fast and easy,” said Max Williamson, Sock Club’s vice president of Customer Success and Strategic Partnerships.

Dedicated in-store teams and purpose-built tools for business are just some of the ways that Apple is supporting companies of all sizes and in every region of the globe. No matter where a business is on their journey, Apple has the tools to help.

Available year-round, Today at Apple also provides sessions for business teams or colleagues through group reservations. Businesses can get started with new devices, explore new skills and tools together with a dedicated expert, and discover what Apple’s latest products can do for their business. Attendees can sign up at apple.com/today/groups .

  • Apple Business Essentials is available as a subscription for businesses in the U.S.
  • Tap to Pay on iPhone is currently available in Australia, Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Ukraine, the U.K., and the U.S.
