Samantha Crain

“To make an impact as an artist, you have to make people a little uncomfortable,” says Samantha Crain. The musician believed so strongly in this ethos, that she started by shaking up her approach to songwriting. By radically rethinking the way she wrote and recorded her fifth album, You Had Me at Goodbye (out March 24 on Ramseur Records), Crain has managed to put her wholly original aural fingerprint on pop music.

“Oh, Dear Louis,” the release’s first single, makes no mistake of Crain’s new voice. Brightly harmonic, it deftly bridges the song’s off-kilter rhythms with sharp strings. “Many pop songs have a lot of cool key changes, modulations, clever lyrics,” she says. “I wanted to show that pop music isn’t usually common, uneducated, or uncreative.”

Until now, the musician’s soulful-nightingale voice had been invested in plaintive, rootsy compositions cut from the Bob Dylan cloth. Based on word of mouth, the organic success of Crain’s debut, The Confiscation , an EP of evocative narratives, had crescendoed into 2014’s Kid Face , for which Rolling Stone singled her out as an Artist to Watch. By the time she dropped the gracefully outspoken Under Branch & Thorn & Tree a year later, Crain—who by then had toured with the Avett Brothers, First Aid Kit, and Neutral Milk Hotel— was anointed one of Oklahoma’s most earnest, underrated storytellers since Woody Guthrie.

So expanding her repertoire with You Had Me at Goodbye was as much an exercise in bilking expectations as it was maturing into a gutsier artist. “I got described as this girl who sits in a cornfield and writes songs,” she says. “And I went with it, because I didn’t really know who I was. I realize now that I missed out on a lot of creative freedom by treating my songwriting so preciously.”

Before penning this album, Crain began listening to a heavy rotation of Cyndi Lauper and David Bowie. She admired Lauper’s brassy, unhinged singing style. “Her voice does these things, swoops and moves around—it’s a pure expression,” Crain notes. “With Bowie, there was a weirdness to his music, but it was still pop. I was studying his key changes and his song structures.”

Weird is something she has always been comfortable with. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, “I stuck out like a sore thumb in this conservative, Christian culture,” says Crain, who began by writing short stories as a teen, later fitting those words into melodies. “It’s not particularly ‘normal’ in this part of the country to walk around with yellow hair and be a liberal activist.” Much of You Had Me at Goodbye is about owning, mining, then accepting this difference.

“Oh, Dear Louis,” for instance, is technically about the topic of Crain’s awkward, if well-intentioned, attempts at comforting a depressed friend. The track, she says, “is how mixed up my brain gets when I’m trying to figure out how to act.” She proudly adds that it is accompanied by an equally inappropriate B-movie inspired video: “I wanted to have some fun with it, make it a campy, ridiculous horror film.”

Meanwhile, the seemingly chipper opening track, “Antiseptic Greeting,” is actually a tongue-in-cheek retort to people who complain about her Resting Bitch Face. (“People are out there living their lives, with things on their minds,” she says. “Don’t make it about yourself!”) In contrast, “Wise One” unfolds like an unlikely romance featuring an oddly charming clarinet solo. “Every time I try to write a truly giddy song, it’d end up turning into a break up song by the chorus,” she says, laughing. “My idea was to start out negative, then see if it could successfully turn into a love song by the chorus .”

She gets away with the unexpected thanks to You Had Me at Goodbye ’s timeless, analog foundation, recorded by John Vanderslice (Spoon, The Mountain Goats). “He’s kind of become my recording guru,” says the indefatigable Crain, who penned the tracks at home over five months between shifts at a day job, then recorded the album in a mere seven days at Vanderslice’s Oakland studio, Tiny Telephone. (The producer, who worked on her past two albums, this time imbued her acoustic-based compositions with a fuller sound using synthesizers, strings, and woodwinds.) “He brings out the best in my creativity. It’s like having another band member with you. He thinks in musical terms, not just in terms of frequencies.”

This also helped her be more free with her singing voice. The stark “Loneliest Handsome Man,” about a melancholic friend, finds her tempering melody into a hymnal hush. One of the album’s crowning achievements, “Red Sky, Blue Mountain,” is a powerfully lilting lullaby. An homage to her Native American heritage, she wrote the song in her tribe’s Choctaw language. “ I

have started writing new traditional songs,” she says, “in hopes that they will help keep our heritage alive .”

Eleven-or-so years into her career, Crain has found the deepest inspiration in just letting go. “Now that I’m older, I’m figuring out how to relate to where I’m from and how I’ve grown up, in a way that isn’t so simplified,” she says. “I made this record as a healing mechanism for myself and to give people an idea of who I am, where my brain is, where my heart is.”

Samantha Crain is an American songwriter, musician, and singer from Shawnee, Oklahoma, signed with Ramseur Records and Full Time Hobby Records

Since successfully unleashing her debut album on the world aged just 19, Oklahoma-born Samantha Crain has always been known for her timeless tones and astute lyricism. Now, on fifth album You Had Me At Goodbye, Samantha packs even more of a punch with an uplifting modern pop surprise.

Written over 4 months at the back end of winter whilst at home in Norman, Oklahoma, You Had Me At Goodbye was penned whilst Samantha was working shifts at a pizza place to save up money for touring, recording, paying bills, and as a self-confessed ‘film nerd,’ binge watching movies. “Oklahoma is beautiful but my relationship with it is complicated. There are mountains, plains, prairies, rolling hills, high deserts and plateaus, with an amazing creative community of people making beautiful visual art, interesting films and loud music. But it’s extremely Christian, conservative, and whilst people say it’s ‘friendly,’ really, people are only friendly if you’re white and aren’t dressed unconventionally. I feel welcome and alienated all at once.”

Where many songwriters will drown their sorrows at the bar, Samantha’s music provides instant relief. A playful and lively balance of sweet balladry and taught experimental art-punk spirit, You Had Me at Goodbye talks from the head and heart whilst punching from the gut. Ever the storyteller (her first EP was created from tales she had concocted in her journal), Samantha wrote ‘Betty’s Eulogy’ from the perspective of the wife of legendary Cherokee-Indian cowboy and vaudeville performer, Will Rogers whilst ‘Smile When You Call’ is an ode to the imagined lover in Jimmy Webb’s ‘Wichita Lineman’. “Usually I have a theme in mind when I start writing for an album but for this record, I just started writing. Turning 30, aging in general, has helped tremendously in freeing myself in the creative process,” she says.

Samantha’s true strength, lies in her self-awareness and retaining a sense of responsibility towards the listener. From adjusting her writing techniques, purposely blurring the lines for interpretation to prevail, to the squelchy jazz tropes of ‘Smile When’, ‘Wise One’ or the freewheeling ‘Antiseptic Greeting’ about the phenomenon of "resting bitch face," each song is astute but full of fun. “I just wanted to have some goddamn fun and make an album that was searching and whole, confident and paralyzed, happy and sad,” she reveals.

Samantha Crain “Pick Apart” – grabbing life by the lapels

Mindfulness, that’s a word that’s quite in vogue these days. Living in the moment.  Or, instead, you could live and relive every moment of your life, endlessly.  Samantha Crain makes something of that suggestion on her new single, released in advance of her upcoming UK tour supporting The Staves – dates a little further down.  Samantha Crain has provided an insight into her song: “ I wrote this song as a mantra to myself to keep the wheels turning and life moving even through the times of weakening quicksand. I can’t always keep momentum and joy. I’m not always my best self, and that’s fine, but I wanted to write something to remind myself in those times of slow-down and of ‘stuckness’ to try and find at least a little purpose for myself, even if it’s something really small like cooking a meal or watching a great movie. I don’t want to be too hard on myself when I’m resting but, at the same time, I want to be in touch with myself enough to give myself little tiny pep talks here and there to just gently remind myself that this is my one life I’m getting to live.”

Those tour dates are:

21st September – The Social, London SOLD OUT 23rd September – Bangwyn Hall, Swansea (w/ The Staves) 24th September – The Junction, Cambridge (w/ The Staves) 25th September – Quarterhouse, Folkestone (w/ The Staves) 26th September – O2 Academy, Oxford (w/ The Staves) 28th September – O2 Institute, Birmingham (w/ The Staves) 29th September – Grand Central Hall, Liverpool (w/ The Staves) 30th September – Galvanizers Yard, Glasgow (w/ The Staves) 2nd October – The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh (w/ The Staves) 4th October – Stylus, Leeds (w/ The Staves) 5th October – Wylam Brewery Tap, Newcastle (w/ The Staves) 6th October – Rock City, Nottingham (w/ The Staves) 7th October – Albert Hall, Manchester (w/ The Staves) 9th October – St. George’s Church, Brighton (w/ The Staves) 11th October – O2 Empire Shepherds Bush, London (w/ The Staves) 12th October – O2 Academy, Bristol (w/ The Staves) 14th October – Dolans Warehouse, Limerick (w/ The Staves) 15th October – Vicar Street, Dublin (w/ The Staves) 16th October – Roisin Dubh, Galway (w/ The Staves) 17th October – Empire Music Hall, Belfast (w/ The Staves)

And… there’s also a video for the new song that Samantha Crain self-produced, it’s pretty good and you can see it here (but, hey, just don’t rat me out to the Video Editor, ok?).

I have been listening to Samantha Crain since before she was signed to a label. I met her at a Concert at the Cain Ballroom in Tulsa and she gave me a copy of her first (I think it was an EP)

Every time she came through Lawrence, I took the time to go see her.

The reason, the honesty in her lyrics, and the emotion behind it. Her tone is unique. I have enjoyed seeing her perform every time I have seen her.

I was pleased to hear her sing on the Reservation Dogs TV program which had one of her songs on the soundtrack.

Saw her open for The Oh Hellos; very different experience from the boistrous, upbeat main act, but certainly no less for it! Crain writes detailed, personal lyrics. She has a powerful voice and displays so much emotion and vulnerability on stage. I cried! I'd definitely see her again!

this was one of the good concerts a saw these last times ! two huge talents ! brilliant songs ( adele couldn' t sound better ) and what a guitarist !! for those who can' t get enough of Dave Rawlings !

The few people that attended saw a truly wonderful artist. What a voice! She is one of the best songwriters that I know. It's not her who should Support First Aid Kit. It should be the other was 'round.

Interview: Samantha Crain on Singing in Choctaw, and Self-Reflection

Oklahoma-based singer-songwriter Samantha Crain releases her sixth album this week. Titled A Small Death , the record reflects a period of time in Crain’s life when physical pain and exhaustion (brought about in large part by carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis) led her to question her future in music. Eventually, she was able to return to playing and writing, and the new album brings a different sound to Crain’s songs. We recently chatted via email about that seemingly more expansive sound, singing in Choctaw, and what life is like for a musician in the middle of a pandemic.

Americana Highways: A number of the songs (“Reunion,” “Pastime,” “Joey”) on your new album seem to have you looking back at your past and assessing how it’s affected your present. After a half-dozen albums, what led to such intense self-reflection?

Samantha Crain: I couldn’t use my hands. I think any sort of check in with mortality will cause self-reflection. As I was in a time of reconstruction following these traumas in my life, I began to search for and learn about who I was as a person outside of my self-appointment and identification as the musician, Samantha Crain. Without the physical ability to play instruments at the time, I spent time talk-writing poetry into a voice recorder, reading, walking, talking to people, living a quiet life. I felt like I was getting to know myself from scratch, peeling off a costume that I was put in as a child and allowing myself, for the first time, to dress myself and fully lean into my curiosities and sensitivities.

AH: “When We Remain” is written and sung in Choctaw. How important is it to you to be able to sing a song of such perseverance in the language of your ancestors?

SC: For many indigenous Americans, the traditions and connections to our ancestors were stripped from us, generations of abuse and genocide and dislocation created a huge chasm for us to truely know the ways of our passed elders. Therefore, it is imperative that we as indigenous Americans can create our own traditions and become empowered in the fact that “if I make something–if i write a song, if i write a poem, if i paint a picture, if i cook a meal–it is Choctaw, because I am Choctaw…no matter if it matches the colonial idea and stereotype of what would be considered indigenous art or creation.” The language remembers, the language connects us over that chasm that was forced.

AH: Before recording A Small Death , you suffered through some pretty significant physical ailments, You weren’t able to play music, which you’ve described as a sort of loss of identity. Now, with not being able to tour or play shows due to COVID-19, are you experiencing anything similar, or is this different?

SC: It is very different. It wasn’t the loss of being able to tour or play shows that distressed me, it was the inability to have use of my hands, for basic things too, not just for playing music. That is a very different circumstance. As an artist, I am used to pivoting, I’m used to feast and famine, I’m used to having to get creative in order to pay my bills….the pandemic is uncomfortable and hard, yes, but it isn’t a loss of identity.

AH: Your previous albums, for the most part, seem to have been more singer-songwriter-ish – that is, a little quieter, with simpler arrangements, etc. A Small Death has, overall, a bigger, more expansive sound. Was it a change that you had in mind while writing the songs, or did it develop more in the studio?

SC: I never think about a project I’m working on in reference to another one of my records while I’m making it. All production and arrangement are simply in service to the song and I try to follow that gut feeling. Looking back, I actually feel like A Small Death is quite reserved in its production and arrangements compared to some of my other records. So I just feel like we’re on different pages on how we view these albums.  I feel like my last album You Had Me At Goodbye was a very expansive and out there record and then my first record Songs In the Night was a full rock band on every song. So it’s possible you’re referring to one particular album that is quieter but I’m not sure which one you’re referring to, probably Kid Face or Under Branch and Thorn and Tree.

AH: The album release was delayed by a couple of months – what’s it like promoting a new record during a global pandemic?

SC: It is new territory that I wish never to revisit!

AH: What will make you, personally, feel safe to start touring and performing live again?

SC: I don’t know. This is one area of my life I feel perfectly fine with not being ahead of the curve, so to speak. I won’t be the first one sticking my neck out to test the waters of public safety. I don’t feel like I have enough information to make a decision yet.

You can order A Small Death here: https://samanthacrain.kungfustore.com/

When concerts return, be sure to catch Crain on tour. I’ve seen her twice in Denver, and she’s amazing live.
