Savannah Historic Homes & House Tours

Close up view of the doorway and entrance steps at the Davenport House, Savannah, GA.

Savannah has an unusually large number and variety of historic house museums for a city of its size. Most of them date from the early to mid 19th century and are restored to reflect that period.

Savannah’s historic homes can offer a closer look at the lives of its (mostly white and wealthy) residents in times past, an appreciation of the architecture and furnishings of a particular period, or even just something to do on a rainy day.

In the majority of these houses, guided tours only are available, though the gardens (where applicable) can be toured at your own pace. Allow about an hour or so for your visit to any of the homes.

Andrew Low House

329 Abercorn Street. Official website

The Andrew Low House was built for one of Savannah’s wealthiest businessmen, the Scottish-born cotton factor Andrew Low. It was built in 1848-1849, the architect believed to be John S Norris.

The house is also associated with Juliette Gordon Low and the Girl Scouts story: Gordon Low lived here after her marriage to Andrew Low’s son William Mackay Low. Though they later divorced, Gordon Low remained in the house until her death; the adjacent carriage house served as the first meeting place for the Girl Scouts organization, which she founded in 1912.

The house (today owned by the Colonial Dames of Georgia) has numerous restored rooms showing how life would have been for a wealthy Savannah family in the 19th century, including a children’s playroom and, more unusually, one of the earliest indoor bathrooms.

The Andrew Low House also has one of the few surviving original gardens created in 19th-century Savannah. The design of the gardens dates from the mid century, shortly after the completion of the house.

Davenport House

324 East State Street. Official website

The Davenport House Museum is one of the oldest of Savannah’s historic houses open to the public. It is also significant as one of the first major successes of the historic preservation movement in Savannah.

New England builder and architect Isaiah Davenport built this house for his family from around 1820, completing it a year or so later. A large and distinctive red brick structure, it is designed in the Federal style, popular from the last decades of the 18th century.

The Historic Savannah Foundation saved the house from destruction in the mid 20th century. Once serving as their headquarters, it opened as a museum in 1963. The house is restored to its appearance in the 1820s; the gardens have also been redeveloped.

Tours explore the life and household management of a thriving Savannah family in that period, and outline the strategies and achievements of the projects undertaken in Savannah over the past several decades to preserve the city’s historic heritage.

The Davenport House also offers several annual special events, some seasonal and others focusing on aspects of Savannah’s history and preservation. See upcoming events

Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home

207 East Charlton Street. Official website

This house is the former residence of Flannery O’Connor, one of the South’s most celebrated authors. O’Connor’s literary reputation rests on her four works – two novels, Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away , and two collections of short stories, A Good Man Is Hard To Find and Everything That Rises Must Converge , the latter published posthumously – bizarre and highly religiously-inflected works that drew upon her intense and lifelong engagement with Catholicism.

O’Connor lived in the house until the age of 13 (a third of her short life), after which her family moved to Atlanta. After traveling north for her education, O’Connor spent much of her remaining time on her mother’s Milledgeville, GA farm. She died aged 39, of lupus.

The Flannery O’Connor childhood home is one of Savannah’s more unique historic house museums. It is the only house museum that depicts life as it would have been during the Great Depression of the early 20th century. It also provides an insight into life for a more modest middle class family, in contrast to the homes of Savannah’s elite.

Green-Meldrim House

14 West Macon Street. Official website

Amongst Savannah’s most popular historic houses is the Green-Meldrim House, on the west side of Madison Square. From this house, General William Sherman wrote his historic telegram presenting the City of Savannah to President Lincoln as a “Christmas present.” It is currently owned by the adjacent St John’s Episcopal Church.

The house was built for English merchant and one of the wealthiest businessman in Savannah, Charles Green, in the early 1850s, at that time one of the grandest houses in the city and reputedly, the single most expensive ever built to that date. It was designed by John S Norris, and is considered an excellent example of Gothic Revival architecture.

Charles Green famously offered the use of his house to General Sherman during the Union army’s occupation of Savannah around the winter of 1864. Some said this was a gesture intended to spare his southern fellow-citizens the indignity of hosting the enemy. Others thought Green was motivated by the hope that the invading forces would not burn his fine new house, though he needn’t have worried: Sherman spared Savannah.

Harper-Fowlkes House

230 Barnard Street. Official website

The Harper-Fowlkes House, a striking Greek Revival home on Savannah’s Orleans Square, was once owned by the influential Champion and McAlpin families. It stands today as testament to the preservation work of Alida Harper-Fowlkes.

The house was designed by Charles Cluskey in the Greek Revival style, constructed in 1842. The Harper-Fowlkes House is the last remaining of the large homes that once graced the formerly-fashionable Orleans Square, its imposing double-story columns a hint of the square’s lost grandeur.

The Harper-Fowlkes House was owned by various members of the Champion and McAlpin familes for much of its first century. Alida Harper (Alida Harper-Fowlkes after her marriage) bought the property in 1939. Though she was never very active in Savannah’s leading preservationist organization, the Historic Savannah Foundation, Harper became an influential force in the restoration of Savannah’s old houses and neighborhoods.

Harper substantially restored the historic Orleans Square home, later deeding it to the Society of the Cincinnati with the proviso that it would never be sold (the house is currently managed by the Coastal Heritage Society). Tours discuss the home’s architecture, artworks and antiques and Harper’s own preservation work.

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace

10 East Oglethorpe Avenue. Official website

Juliette Gordon Low is known nationwide as the founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA. The Birthplace, or Wayne-Gordon House as it is otherwise called, was her childhood home. It is one of Savannah’s key cultural sites.

Juliette Magill Gordon was born in 1860. The house, built around 1820 for the recent mayor of Savannah and later Supreme Court Justice James Moore Wayne, was bought from him by her grandfather, politician and railroad man William Washington Gordon I. Its design is attributed to William Jay.

Juliette Gordon Low (as she became known after her marriage to William Mackay Low in the 1880s) founded the Girl Scouts in 1912, inspired by the Boy Scouting/Girl Guiding organizations she had learned of during her travels in Britain.

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is both a museum of the Girl Scouts organization and a historic home. It is restored to reflect the life of an upper class southern family in the late 19th century, also displaying many artifacts from Low’s life and the history of Girl Scouting.

King-Tisdell Cottage

514 East Huntington Street. Official website

The King-Tisdell Cottage is a rare example of a visitable Savannah historic home formerly owned by and depicting the lives of the city’s African-American citizens.

The house was originally built in 1896 for the white woodmill owner WW Aimar, constructed in the delightful ‘gingerbread’ style then popular. The King-Tisdell Cottage is a beautiful example of this late-19th century architectural trend, characterized by the intricate, ornate woodword employed as decoration of the porches and other outer features of a dwelling.

In 1925, the house was bought by a young African-American couple, Eugene and Sarah King, both of them representative of the Black entrepreneurship that often thrived in early 20th-century Savannah. Eugene King was the owner of a laundry business; Sarah King would operate her own confectionery out of their home, then located at 516 Ott Street, out in Savannah’s southern addition.

More of a museum in a historic house than a historic house museum, its exhibits include: the experiences of enslavement and emancipation and of Black entrepreneurship in the city; the Gullah-Geechee culture of the sea islands and coast; the life of museum founder and Civil Rights activist WW Law; and the stories of the home’s former owners.

→ See current hours and admission for the King-Tisdell Cottage

Mercer-Williams House

429 Bull Street. Official website

The Mercer-Williams House, former residence of the preservationist and antiques dealer Jim Williams, is undoubtedly the most widely-known of Savannah’s historic homes.

The early history of the house was largely unremarkable. John S Norris designed the home in 1860, for Hugh Weedon Mercer. War interfered with its construction, however, and it was not completed until 1868, by which time Mercer had sold it to John Wilder.

In 1969, Williams bought the house, restoring the property and redesigning the interiors according to his own tastes and interests.

Always a controversial figure, Jim Williams became a notorious one when he shot and killed his lover in the old Mercer House. Soon after, the man, the events and the home would all be immortalized in John Berendt’s international best-seller, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil , also made into a movie.

Tours of the Mercer-Williams House focus on the architecture and restoration of the house; Williams’s legacy as a historical preservationist; and the remaining antiques (most of the antiques with which Williams filled the house have now been sold). Discussion of both the shooting and “The Book” is minimal.

→ See current hours and admission for the Mercer-Williams House

Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters

124 Abercorn Street. Official website

The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is one of Savannah’s most outstanding antebellum houses, and also one of its most completely preserved. Enslaved people’s quarters and English-style parterre gardens can be seen, besides the architecture and antiques of the main house itself.

The Owens-Thomas House dates from the 1810s, built for wealthy cotton merchant and banker Richard Richardson and his family. It was William Jay’s first Savannah commission: Jay is one of the most notable architects to have worked in the city, and the Owens-Thomas House is considered his finest work.

The house was completed in 1819, but tragedy soon struck. By 1822, Richardson’s wife Frances and two of their children were dead, and Richardson had lost their home, ruined by a recession and bad investments.

My Sweet Savannah

My Sweet Savannah

making your house a home, one project at a time

Christmas home tour 2023

Hello and welcome to our Christmas home tour 2023!

my sweet savannah Christmas home tour

If you are coming over from On Sutton Place, welcome!

welcome to our holiday home

This tour is put on by my friend at Jennifer Rizzo and I am honored to be a part of it every year!

This year, like most, I used earthy, neutral, and natural colors. The result is one that is calming on the eye and very restful.

The white twinkling lights in almost every room add to the magical feeling and everything is so cozy.

I am a total homebody so having a home that is peaceful and clean and simple is important to me.

rustic modern Christmas home tour

LIVING ROOM-

The living room decor is similar to last years, with a few small changes.

I kept the tree exactly the same and the only thing I might add is a few more brown ornaments and faux magnolia stems.

RUSTIC MODERN CHRISTMAS LIVING ROOM

Next to the fireplace is a large nutcracker I thrifted and spray painted. Make sure you are following me on

nutcracker

Instagram so you can see all these little makeovers!

I hung 4 neutral stockings and left the mantel free of garland.

stockings

I kept the pillows neutral on our couch but I did add in a new gingerbread pillow and I am obsessed with it!

pottery barn gingerbread pillow

You will see a common gingerbread theme in almost every room.

This pillow adds just the right amount of color and has bit of red in it, the only red you’ll see in my whole house!

On the coffee table I added on beautiful bowl filled with pinecones.

And the side table has a simple faux arrangement and twinkling battery operated candles.

rustic modern Christmas decor

New this year is the addition of a beautiful wreath I hung layered on our gallery wall. The white lights are on a timer and I have them set to come on at dusk, and they stay on for 6 hours. It adds just the right amount of sparkle.

DINING ROOM-

RUSTIC MODERN CHRISTMAS DINING ROOM

I will give you a quick glance at our Christmas tablescape, but you will have to come back on Thursday for the big reveal!

dining room christmas

Did you catch our dark and moody dining room makeover? That will show you in depth how I created our accent wall.

On that wall are huge metal shelves which I had fun styling!

I kept things pretty minimal and tone on tone here.

I wanted the “WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS” to really stand out, even though it is black on black.

I did a quick DIY dropcloth art with a black tree, then added in a few black nutcrackers and a yummy holiday scented candle.

dining room christmas decor

In the corner I have a petite faux tree I got at Target years ago. I filled it with DIY ornaments and some brown velvet ribbon, as well as a few pinecone picks from Hobby Lobby.

Here comes the DIY gingerbread houses!

I have them scattered here and there and at night they are so sweet with the little lights shining through the windows.

I especially love them in our coffee nook/hot cocoa bar.

I found some new little mini wreaths this year and hung them from the sconces. A touch of brown velvet ribbon hanging from them look so great with all the other earth tones.

Gingerbread cookie anyone? I have a funny story about these, but you will have to check back for that!

Our kitchen coffee station also got a little Christmas magic.

Not Christmas related but the shining star in our bedroom this year is new curtains! I found these on Amazon and they are so pretty! They have blackout lining and the detail on them is so pretty. They are super affordable as well!

I have some new cozy bedding coming but it hasn’t arrived yet.

Would you believe I found both these faux cedar trees at the thrift shop?

I ordered 3 of these planters, {they come in a set} and the largest is holding the living room Christmas tree.

The cute doormat is new this year as is my thrifted and made over concrete deer!

CHRISTMAS COZY READING NOOK

Our reading nook in the basement used to be a closet that was not functioning well for us.

So I carved out a little space for some R & R and sprinkled on a little holiday magic as well!

The sled I just got at a vintage show and I am sure it will make its way into many different rooms over the years. I did see Pottery Barn has one as well so I will link that below.

I put garland with warm white lights around the round mirror and I like how it mimics a wreath.

More white lights in the form of a little twinkling twig tree sit off to the side.

Do you see the faux fur blanket? Well, it is actually a tree skirt that I intended to use on our living room tree but changed my mind! It is the perfect size to cozy up with and no one would know it isn’t a blanket.

Love your simplistic and organic style! Your home is so inviting, love the “We Wish you a Merry Christmas” sign, it’s stunning. Do you have a source for your dining room chandelier, I love how rustic it looks. Couldn’t find anything on your site. Happy Holidays!!

Are you planning to visit Savannah in December? In my (slightly biased) opinion, this Georgia city is one of the best places to experience the type of picture-perfect Hallmark holiday so many people crave.

After all — Savannah is nothing if not sickeningly picturesque!

Read on for some of the best events and things to do in Savannah in December, or check out the top annual events in Savannah if you’re visiting during a different time of year.

December in Savannah GA

If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t want to be out enjoying the holiday festivities while you’re all bundled up in a parka — but it is nice to feel a bit of chill in the air.

Our mild winters are one of the big reasons why I love Savannah so much this time of year! During December, expect daytime highs around 65° F and evening lows around 45° F.

You can usually get away with wearing light layers during the day, and then it will be cold enough to appreciate a yummy cup of hot cocoa at night.

However, because Savannah is a fickle beast, sometimes the weather in December is so warm that you can wear shorts and a t-shirt! I always suggest checking your weather app a few days before your trip to get a solid idea of what to pack.

Make note that River Street sits at a lower elevation than the rest of the city and sometimes has a steady breeze blowing in off the water, so the riverfront often feels a few degrees colder.

Savannah Christmas Events

I’ve arranged these events by date instead of by type, so you can at a glance which ones coincide with the dates of your vacation.

A few Savannah Christmas events start in November, so I’m including those here, as well!

Holiday Lights & Sights Trolley Tour

Location: Historic District Date: November 24 – December 24, 2023 Time: Multiple daily start times, beginning at 6 p.m. Cost: Approximately $35 – $40 Learn More

If you want to explore the Historic District to see the Christmas lights at night but you’re nervous about wandering around an unfamiliar city after dark, the holiday trolley makes a great option!

The trolley runs multiple nightly routes and takes place from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.

It includes caroling, and riders are encouraged to sing along. (If I’m remembering correctly, I believe they string Christmas lights inside the trolley, too!)

The trolley winds through the Historic District and stops in City Market, where you’ll be able to shop and have pictures taken with Father Christmas.

While you’re there, you’ll be able to visit American Prohibition Museum to see how the holidays were celebrated in Savannah in the 1920s. Non-alcoholic punch will be served in the museum’s speakeasy, but you’ll also be able to purchase authentic winter cocktails.

The stop includes restrooms, and — as long as you’re able to climb up two or three steps to enter the trolley — this is a very mobility-friendly option. Book tickets here. (You can purchase them beginning in early November.)

Holiday Boat Parade of Lights

Location: Historic District | River Street Address: 201 Port Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: Saturday, November 25, 2023 Time: 7 – 9 p.m. Cost: Free to attend Learn More

Here in Savannah, our annual Christmas parade falls a bit on the unique side!

Residents decorate their boats with festive lights and jolly holiday characters, and then the boats float down the river for all to enjoy.

Led by the Georgia Queen Riverboat, the parade begins at the Eastern Wharf Dock and then continues down the river before ending back at Eastern Wharf.

You can watch the parade from anywhere along River Street. It’s a popular event, but there’s plenty of room along the riverfront for everyone to have a clear view.

You do, however, need to arrive early to get a good parking spot. If you’re walking, simply show up 15 minutes or so before the event begins.

The Thompson Savannah is sponsoring the event in 2023, and their waterfront park makes an ideal viewing area.

Savannah Christmas Market

Location: Plant Riverside District Address: 400 W River Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: November 15, 2023 – January 1, 2024 Time: Varies Cost: Most events are free Learn More

During December, the Plant Riverside District transforms into a European-style Christmas market. You’ll find local vendors on hand with unique holiday gifts, plus specialty food and beverages.

The market begins mid-month in November and runs through the New Year. It includes live performances, children’s activities, and more.

It’s a family-friendly event filled with fun activities like photos with Santa and cookie decorating days. Since Santa has such a busy schedule, I suggest checking first to confirm when he’ll be on site.

Holiday Nights in City Market

Location: Historic District | City Market Address: Intersection of Jefferson Street and W Saint Julian Street Date: November 24 – December 24, 2023 Time: 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. Cost: Free Learn More

Wander through City Market’s 2-block outdoor courtyard and enjoy listening to holiday music while you do a little Christmas shopping.

The stores stay open late and many offer treats to help sustain you while you shop.

I suggest stopping in Byrd Cookie Co. to purchase cookies for Santa, and then go by Savannah Candy Kitchen to stock up on fresh pralines and nuts to fill the stockings!

Father Christmas will be there to snap photos with the kiddos (and the young-at-heart).

December Night & Holiday Lights at the Botanical Gardens

Location: Outskirts of Savannah | Coastal Botanical Gardens Address: 2 Canebrake Road, Savannah, Georgia 31419 Date: November 24 – December 24, 2023 (Select days) Time: 6 – 7 p.m. Cost: $15 (Children under 3 free) Learn More

The Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens puts on a spectacular holiday lights display every December, and it’s a fun event for all ages.

Families can wander along nearly five acres of holiday scenery and woodland wonders, and then check out the life-sized Advent calendar.

There will also be nightly visits from Santa, s’mores stations, and a hot beverage center that includes hot chocolate, cocoa, and coffee.

It’s a walking event, so you can fit in some exercise while enjoying the scenery!

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

Location: Historic District Address: Intersection of Bull and Broughton streets Date: December 3, 10, and 17 (Saturdays) Time: Afternoon and early evenings Cost: Free

If you want to take a break from your holiday shopping along Broughton Street to check out the city’s official Christmas tree, you can do so at the intersection of Broughton and Bull streets.

Expect to find free entertainment from local dance groups, choirs, and storytellers every Saturday in December.

Totally Made-Up Holiday Movie

Location: Starland District | Front Porch Improv Address: 210 W Victory Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Dates: November 24 – December 22, 2023 (Select weekend dates) Time: 8 p.m. Cost: Varies from $8 – $25 Learn More

Seriously, y’all … what could be more fun than actors creating a live holiday movie that is actually made up on the spot from audience suggestions?!

It sounds crazy, but that’s exactly what Front Porch Improv does during every gig. You’re guaranteed to see a unique live-action show at each performance, and nothing is off limits — which adds to the humor.

The folks at Front Porch Improv are fantastic, so I highly recommend this one for anyone in need of a laugh this holiday season.

Make note that the show is recommended for ages 16 and up.

A Christmas Tradition at the Savannah Theatre

Location: Historic District | Historic Savannah Theatre Address: 222 Bull Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 1 – 24, 2023 (Excluding Mondays) Time: 3 p.m, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Cost: Approximately $50 for adults and $25 for children Learn More

What could be more festive during December than a glitzy 2-hour live performance set inside one of Savannah’s most beautiful theaters?

The Historic Savannah Theatre was built in 1818, and the building’s stunning architectural details are worth the price of admission alone.

Add in top-notch performers, lively music, and plenty of positive energy, and you know you’re in for a good time! The show includes an entertaining Rockettes-style performance by Santa and his reindeer.

This year marks 20+ consecutive “A Christmas Tradition” shows held at the Savannah Theatre, so that’s definitely something to celebrate.

(Visiting Savannah during November? Check out “Elf the Musical” instead. It’s just as entertaining! If you prefer to get spooked, they also offer a 3-hour paranormal investigation of the theatre .)

Handel’s Messiah Concert at the Cathedral

Location: Historic District | Cathedral St. John Address: 222 East Harris Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 1, 2023 Time: 7:30 – 9 p.m. Cost: TBD Learn More

Handel’s Messiah is performed by the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus, and it’s held inside the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist .

This popular annual tradition is a favorite amongst locals, so tickets sell out quickly. Each year it features a new guest conductor and a variety of talented soloists.

City Market Christmas for Kids Celebration

Location: Historic District | City Market Address: Intersection of Jefferson Street and W Saint Julian Street Date: December 6, 2023 – confirmed Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost: Free

Does your child love The Grinch? Bring them to the City Market Kids Celebration where they can get “Grinched” and enjoy a sing-along to “How the Dancing Grinch Stole Christmas.”

They can finish off the afternoon by making ornaments and decorating seasonal cookies.

Savannah DNA Holiday Tour of Homes

Location: Historic District Date: December 9, 2023 – confirmed Time: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. or 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Cost: Sold Out for 2023 Learn More

The annual Holiday Tour of Homes is one of my favorite seasonal events in Savannah! I make sure to purchase my tickets each year as soon as they go on sale in early September.

This tour is one of the only opportunities to go inside some of the most stately homes in the Historic District while they’re all decked out in their holiday best. You’ll also get to visit a few historic inns and B&Bs during the tour.

If you purchase tickets, expect to make a day of it. You’ll be on the move throughout the entire event, so you’ll get plenty of steps in. There’s quite a bit to see, so I suggest eating a hearty breakfast before you go.

Proceeds from the event support a variety of local charities hand-selected by the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA). You can feel good knowing you’ll be giving back to the community by enjoying these beautiful homes.

158th Annual Winter Muster at Fort McAllister

Location: Outskirts of Savannah | Fort McAllister State Park Address: 3494 Fort McAllister Road, Richmond Hill, Georgia 31324 Date: December 8- 9, 2023 – confirmed Time: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Cost: $15 – $20 Learn More

On December 13, 1864, General Sherman and his troops launched an attack on Fort McAllister, and you can experience what it was like for the soldiers stationed at the fort via demonstrations by re-enactors.

You’ll be able to tour soldier encampments, watch blacksmithing demonstrations, and see how the Confederates prepared for the impending battle.

12 Bars of Christmas Annual 5k Bar Crawl

Location: Historic District | Factors Walk Address: 306 Upper Factors Walk, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 09, 2023 – confirmed Time: 4 – 8 p.m. Cost: $30 (Look for early-bird discounts) Learn More

Savannah just wouldn’t be Savannah without a drunken holiday bar crawl through the entertainment district!

In case you didn’t know, much of Savannah’s Historic District is an open container zone. That means you can walk around with an alcoholic drink without getting in trouble. (Although you do have to abide by certain stipulations regarding cup size and material.)

The crawl begins at Stafford House on Upper Factors Walk. That’s where you’ll pick up a scorecard and map of participating bars before heading out to explore each of the 12 destinations at your own pace.

Each location will offer drink specials for participants only, and bartenders will stamp your scorecard to prove you completed the 5k. Once you’ve finished, head straight to the afterparty to take photos with Santa and hang out with other participants.

Christmas at the Cathedral Concert

Location: Historic District | Cathedral St. John Address: 222 E Harris Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 18, 2023 Time: 5 p.m Cost: Sold Out Learn More

This popular event features the Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Brass as they present their annual holiday music program.

Christmas at the Cathedral mixes scripture readings with choral music, and the audience is encouraged to sing traditional seasonal carols along with the choir.

Sometimes the handbell ensemble joins in, too!

The Cathedral is stunning year round, but it’s at its best during the holiday season when the crèche scene is on display and thousands of red poinsettias fill the sanctuary.

Davenport House Yuletide Tours

Location: Historic District | Davenport House Address: 323 E. Broughton Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 8 – 9, 2023 – confirmed Time: 6 – 8:30 p.m. Cost: $35 Learn More

This is another December event in Savannah that’s worth doing for its historical aspect. Guests can “go back in time” to experience what Christmas would’ve been like for an affluent Savannah family during the mid-1800s.

The Davenport House looks beautiful when lit by candlelight, and the interpreters do a good job of bringing the home’s history to life. A few of the cast members even encourage audience participation, which can be entertaining.

Light refreshments and music round out the experience. Tickets are available in advance or at the door for a slightly higher fee (if the event isn’t sold out). As noted above, you can also see this event when you purchase a ticket for the holiday trolley tour .

Christmas Eve Riverboat Cruise

Location: Historic District | River Street Address: 9 E River Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401 Date: December 24, 2023 Time: Varies Cost: Varies Learn More

If you have trouble finding an open restaurant on Christmas Eve, try scheduling a lunch or dinner cruise aboard the Georgia Queen steamboat. Both options offer an elaborate buffet and live entertainment.

After filling up on Southern-style food, you can head to the top deck to take photos of Savannah’s historic skyline.

Although the riverfront is pretty during the day, I personally prefer the nighttime cruise best (I enjoy seeing the lights of all the buildings reflecting off the water). If you’re interested in actually seeing the architectural styles of the buildings along the waterfront, you’ll want to pick the daytime tour.

The lunch cruise lasts for 1.5 hours and the dinner cruise sets sail for 2 full hours.

If you won’t be visiting on Christmas Eve, you can still book riverboat cruises anytime during December in Savannah at this link .

Things To Do in Savannah Georgia in December

Everything listed above was seasonal, but there are plenty of other things to do in Savannah that aren’t Christmas-related.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Visit one (or more!) of the beautiful cemeteries in Savannah .
  • Go on a Black history tour to better understand the city’s history.
  • Try getting spooked on a Savannah ghost tour .

I also suggest checking the event calendars for District Live, Starland Yard, and Victory North if you’re interested in live music!

Savannah Georgia December FAQs

December is one of the best times to visit Savannah ! The winter weather is typically mild, the Southern oaks are still green during December (the Spanish moss stays on the trees year round), there are numerous seasonal events, and Savannah’s Christmas decorations are quite picturesque.

The weather in Savannah Georgia in December is usually mild. The average high is around 65° F and the average low is around 45° F. There’s no need to pack a heavy winter coat, and snow is so rare that it only falls in significant amounts once every 5 to 10 years. It’s also rare for temperatures to fall below freezing, and sometimes it’s warm enough for t-shirts and even shorts! NOTE: In 2022, the temperatures did fall well below freezing in Savannah during Christmas week.

Since Savannah’s winter weather is mild, it’s best to pack light layers for a December visit. There’s no need for a heavy winter coat! Pack a mixture of jeans, booties, and lightweight long-sleeved shirts or sweaters for layering. If the weather forecast shows an unseasonable cold snap, toss gloves and a hat into your suitcase.

Yes, the Savannah Christmas Market is held in the Plant Riverside District and runs from mid-November through the New Year. It is usually closed on Christmas day so the vendors can spend time with their families.

my wife will be taking some time in savannah in december. you have made great suggestions and we are very thankful.

Happy to help!

We are coming down for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Great stuff here!!! Do you know if the horse carriages are working? We were hoping to take one to dinner and a pedicab home. Thanks

I don’t know if they’ll be running Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. But I have seen a few pedicabs decorated with holiday lights and they have blankets the the passengers. One even had Santa at the helm. Very cute!

We will be empty nesters this year, and your suggestions are a godsend!

Oh, how fun! I’m glad the post was helpful 🙂

Great information, thank you. Thinking of going to the Christmas market early December. There’s a typo under General Sherman’s Muster. You’ve written 1964.

Thanks for catching that! Unless he came back as a ghost, I don’t think that would’ve been possible 😂 I’ve just corrected it.

Christmas in Savannah: A Must for Families

things to do for christmas in savannah

Christmas in Savannah, Georgia is magical! It is a beautiful city full of rich experiences, culture, and history. And fabulous to visit year round but is especially magical for Christmas. Whether you’re visiting Savannah or live here already, you will want to check out some of these must-sees with the kids! They would be great for date nights, family events, or even solo trips.

Christmas in Savannah: A must for the Families

Christmas in Savannah

Snowman in a Hot Tub

If you ask our kids, it isn’t Christmas in Savannah without a Snowman in a Hot Tub from Leopold’s. A Snowman in a Hot Tub is a scoop of ice cream in hot chocolate! Offering ice cream since 1919, Leopold’s is located on Broughton Street and is a Savannah tradition for those of us who live here and visitors alike. If you have never been, expect a line. (Yes, even in the winter there can be a line for ice cream!)

Historic District Christmas Lights

One of our favorite things to do for Christmas in Savannah is to visit Savannah’s Historic District . Dress up with the kids and head down to check out the lights. The closer to Christmas, the better! Make sure to check out the lights on Victory Drive. It is the famous street in Savannah lined with old oak trees and beautiful mansions. They go all out with the Christmas decorations. You can get tours or take a pedicab. But do yourself a favor and just grab your jacket and some hot coffee or cocoa and walk. The old homes are never more mesmerizing than when they are lit up for the holiday.

Tybee Island Christmas Parade

While it’s not exactly in Savannah, it’s only about a thirty-minute drive to get to Tybee Island – and one that those of us who are local make pretty often. Tybee is a very cool little beach town with lots to do. So head down one day while you are here and walk the beach during the day. While it still gets cold here, it is much milder than our northern friends. So we like to visit the beaches in the winter to collect shells, fly kites, and play ball. And don’t miss the Tybee Island Christmas Parade!  It gets better and better every year! Don’t miss out on pictures with Santa. 🙂

Holiday Sights Tour

Old Town Trolley offers a Holiday Sights Tour from the end of November through Christmas Eve. Stops include the area’s largest Gingerbread Village and the Davenport House Museum. Their “conductor” elves are excited to take your family on this old-time journey. Savannah is one of the oldest cities in the south. And it is just stunning. If you are ever going to do the tourist thing, Savannah is a place to do it.

Others offer Christmas tours as well.

Celebration on the River

Looking for the perfect Christmas in Savannah event for the whole family? Well, you’ve found it with the Holiday Celebration on the River ! It’s an epic holiday celebration on the gorgeous, historic River Street. Rousakis Plaza is full of local vendors with holiday gifts and more. Savannah’s Lighted Christmas Parade starts on West River Street and ends at downtown Ellis Square.

On the first Friday of the month in November and December, fireworks light up the Savannah sky along the riverfront. You don’t want to miss it!

Skatefest takes place in December (through January 1), transforming the Martin Luther King Junior Arena into an ice skating rink for folks of all ages! For anyone who does not live in the south, you might not understand why this is such a big deal. WE RARELY HAVE ICE.  So we manufacture some for the holiday. My husband is from Ohio so is teaching our kids to ice skate. I apparently have southern blood and spend most of my lessons on the bleachers after falling one too many times.

Gingerbread House Competition

Get your gingerbread build on! Gingerbread Village hosts a yearly Gingerbread House Competition, with a 1st place prize of $1,000! In the adult division, 2nd place wins $750, and 3rd place wins $500. Other prizes include a weekend resort getaway and more. In the youth division, 1st place wins $250, 2nd place wins $150, and 3rd place wins $50. Win some Christmas shopping money if nothing else!

Christmas Fun Runs

Feeling especially motivated? Join Fleet Feets’s holiday-themed Fun Runs in December. These family-friendly events are sure to create many holiday memories for years to come! These events are FREE to attend. My oldest daughter is a runner and loves the winter runs in Savannah.

Keep in mind that most of the year, our runners face extreme heat and have to work to stay acclimated to running long distances in that sort of weather. So to run in cool weather is a real treat. And because we know how to throw a party in Savannah, the winter runs are usually themed…. Check out the Christmas PJ run and the Ugly Sweater Fun Run.

Thank you for this information! My sisters (3) and I plan on visiting Savannah Dec 6-11, 2018. We are all in our 60’s so we are looking for some old fashioned Christmas things to do. This has helped me a lot since I am in charge of planning the trip (my 60th birthday trip!).

Dinner this evening is included at a Florence staple for over a decade, Victor's Restaurant. Your dining experience at Victor's will include upscale food and services in a comfortable atmosphere. After dinner, you will return to your hotel with the evening to do as you wish.

Following breakfast included at the hotel, you will depart for Savannah, Georgia with lunch on your own en route. With exciting celebrations taking place throughout the Christmas season, visitors will enjoy live holiday music, street performances, seasonal food specials and exclusive holiday market vendors along Savannah's Waterfront. Next, you will visit the Isaiah Davenport House at Christmas. Just imagine the sights and sounds of Savannah two centuries ago - candlelit homes, horse drawn carriages and a flurry of festivities in anticipation of Christmas Day. Now you can experience a brief glimpse of what the early 19th century life was like in the Hostess City inside one of its most historic homes. Afterwards, you will board the motorcoach and depart for check in at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Savannah Downtown/Historic District (912-236-1777) for first class lodging on a 3-night stay. Hotel amenities include a fitness center and an outdoor pool. Guest rooms feature a pantry area, mini refrigerator, and a work space with high-speed internet access. Enjoy some free time to explore the hotel. Early evening time, you will depart for Savannah Riverboat Cruises, where you will have the luxury of seeing Savannah from a totally different perspective. Sit back, relax, and enjoy being one board in one of the beautifully appointed ballrooms, while the Georgia Queen slowly glides down the river. While on board, enjoy a specially prepared buffet style dinner, made with the freshest local ingredients. This special night will include Savannah's once a year Boat Parade of Lights. Experience the parade from the best seats in Savannah, as you lead more than 30 beautifully decorated glowing vessels along the Savannah River. While on board, included is heavy hors d'oeuvres, entertainment, and special drinks. After the boat ride, you will dock and return to the hotel for the remainder of the evening.

Wake to breakfast included at the hotel. Following breakfast, your day will begin with a journey to the Bonaventure Cemetery for a hauntingly beautiful tour. Quintessentially Southern Gothic, it has captured the imaginations of writers, poets, naturalists, photographers, and filmmakers for more than 150 years. Part natural cathedral, part sculptural garden, you will transcend time at the Bonaventure Cemetery. Following the cemetery visit, you will depart for the Savannah: Taste of Town Tour. Get a taste of Southern cuisine on this filling Savannah culinary tour. This walking and tasting tour will ensure you enjoy a fun, one-of-a-kind culinary experience while strolling through the gardens and historic, cultural landmarks of the squares of Savannah, the Hostess City of the South. You will dine on local favorites throughout your journey through the city. The only thing you need to bring for this foody tour, is a BIG appetite! The final stop on your Savannah tour is Paula Deen's famous the Lady and Sons as featured on the Food Network. With a full belly and the want to relax, you will be ecstatic to next depart for the Savannah Theater, where you will kick back and enjoy the holiday glitz, by the showing of "A Christmas Tradition." This two-hour variety show features Frosty, dancing reindeer, Santa, and his elves, along with an award-winning cast of singers and a live band performing all the class Christmas favorites. The theater will be transformed into a perfect holiday picture, sharing all your Christmas favorites. Sprinkle in a little comedy for the cheeriest event of the season. Following the show, you will depart for dinner included at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. Most Southern towns used to boast a boardinghouse where you could find a simple, quiet room and communal dining room that offered at least two hearty meals a day. In 1943, a young Sema Wilkes took over a boardinghouse in historic downtown Savannah. Her goal was modest: to make a living by offering comfortable lodging and homestyle Southern cooking…the rest is history! Following dinner, you will depart for your last excursion of the day, the Holly Jolly Trolley Tour. One of Savannah's most beloved holiday traditions is back and all aglow for the most wonderful time of the year. Now in their 26th year, enjoy the magic of Savannah's holiday sights and festive nights in the warm, cozy comfort onboard the Old Town Trolley for a fully immersive holiday experience. Enjoy caroling from the trolley as you drive through the beautiful historic district of Savannah and Hutchinson Island. The trolley tour includes a visit to 1820's Savannah during the holidays to get a glimpse of a typical 19th-century family holiday at the Isiah Davenport House, the grandeur of the Gingerbread Village and Trees of Life Display at the Westin Harbor Resort. The Holly Jolly Trolley will take you through the "Festival of Lights" featuring over 70 themed holiday lights displays. Following your trolley tour, you will depart for your hotel for the remainder of the night to do whatever you wish.

Breakfast will be included at the hotel before you depart for the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace tour. You will be provided with an exciting look into the history of the founder of the Girl Scouts, as well as a glimpse into a movement that is still building girls into strong women of courage, confidence, and character over 100 years later. Lunch today will be on your own during touring. Next, you will depart for a tour of the Green-Meldrim House. A national historic landmark, General Sherman used the Green-Meldrim house as his personal headquarters in Savannah. Susie Baker King Thomas also learned to read and write as a young slave girl and worked for Mrs. Green as a laundress and cook. She also worked as a nurse and teacher for the Union soldiers. The house is also known as notable architect John Norris' best work! Following the house tour, you will depart for the American Prohibition Museum. Enjoy an 80-minute, fully guided tour of the American Prohibition Museum, that culminates with a hands-on cocktail experience! Your tour will start with a historically costumed guide bursting with Prohibitions stories. Once you enter the Speakeasy, you will get the opportunity to spend time with an expert bartender, tasting a delicious Old Fashioned, original cocktail, and then make a Bee's Knees cocktail using all the tools yourself! Your last excursion for the evening will be dinner included at Paula Deen's The Lady and Sons Restaurant. The Lady Sons Restaurant had its humble beginnings back in June of 1989 when Paula started The Bag Lady, out of her home. Since, it has grown into a world-renowned restaurant. In true Southern tradition, we serve a family style spread of hearty down-home dishes along with Paula's famous sides to be selected and shared by the table. Enjoy endless portions of entrees and sides, like collard greens, crispy fried chicken, broccoli casserole and more! Following your delicious, filling dinner, you will depart the restaurant to head back to the hotel. The remainder of the night is yours to use the hotel amenities or explore the area on your own.

Following breakfast included at the hotel, you will check out and depart for Norfolk, Virginia, with rest stops and lunch on your own en route, to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Upon arrival, you will have dinner included as you enjoy the uniquely decorated garden for the holidays with hand-crafted botanical ornaments and enchanting displays. Included in your admission, is the Garden fest of Lights, featuring more than half-a-million twinkling lights, hand-crafted botanical decorations, model trains, and more. Stroll through the outdoor garden and lakeside paths festively illuminated, (please dress appropriately for the weather). Visit the Education and Library Complex to view the beautiful holiday trees creatively decorated by elementary school students. Next, you will depart for Richmond, Virginia, to check into the Drury Plaza Hotel Richmond (804-354-1542), for your final night's stay. Hotel amenities include an outdoor/indoor pool and whirlpool, 24-hour business center, a 24-hour fitness center, and an on-site kitchen and bar. Guest rooms feature a TV, coffee maker, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, microwave, refrigerator, and complimentary high speed wireless internet access. The remainder of the evening is yours to relax and explore the hotel amenities, if you wish.

Breakfast will be included at the hotel before you check out and depart for a guided tour of the Virginia State Capitol Building. The capitol houses the oldest elected legislative body in North America, the Virginia Assembly, first established as the House of Burgesses in 1619. Designed by Thomas Jefferson, see how the Commonwealth shows off its Capitol during the holidays. After the tour, you will depart for Carytown, for lunch on your own and a chance to browse the shops. Voted "Best Neighborhood to Shop In" by Southern Living Magazine readers, Carytown is a broad blend of locally owned specialty stores, boutiques, and savory culinary delights. Afterwards, you will depart for home, with everlasting memories of Savannah.

The two Danny's were simply hilarious, AND filled with great facts (and some fiction ;-)) about Savannah. Loved the pit stop with the option to grab a cocktail or two. Our cheeks hurt from laughing the entire tour, and they did an amazing job personalizing their shtick for our group!! They showed us some landmarks from movies and history, and let us stop half way to get a drink and/or go to the bathroom. I would recommend it. I just wish there were more historical sites to see. • CruisinCouple0504 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles A mixed bag- Rude trolley driver I'm honestly torn on how I feel about this hop on/off tour. Being a local we usually like bringing family/friends to see our beautiful city... however this weekend we had a mixed experience. When we first boarded the trolley, our driver Sarge was great. Friendly, funny and gave lots of good info. He interacted with us and made it a fun experience! The hop on/off system isn't ideal for packed Saturdays... we kept stopping and no one was getting on/off many stops, which seemed like a waste. Many people waiting at the stops had to wait for additional trolleys to show up... but hands down the worst (and most uncomfortable) time on our trip was when we hopped on Ruben's trolley. We were heading back after a long day of touring the town. Keep in mind we were 100% sober, and literally a group of 5, with little ones.... when Ruben slammed on the brakes and told us to be quiet. Not kindly asking... I kid you not he stopped mid-traffic to single us out and tell us to stop talking, and that we had been "chatty" since we hopped on. I was stunned... All day no other driver ever said a word, and by no means were we loud at all! I looked around the trolley, and all of the other passengers were just as confused as we were. Not to mention, I'm hearing impaired- IF (and that's a big IF) I spoke up at all, it was simply to hear what someone was saying.... lesson learned- next time we'll use the other trolley service. Ruben was out of line. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • gailaN6580GC 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointment plus eclipse to avoid! Bus tour drivers were all great! Each one different style. From this point all went downhill! We were told several prices and also had to delay one day due to driver delay. Once we started the tour got off at #4 at 10:30 am, to find nothing opened till 11am. Then trying to find Six Pence Pub, missed tour start and didn't want to wait another hour. This disappointment followed us the whole afternoon. Would only recommend the private tour aloting time to see each historic site rather than hop on! Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • michaelwY6639RR 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Really fun but ... We purchased this tour and loved our guides who were very knowledgable and entertaining. I do recommend this tour. But be aware its not an ideal way to get around town for a couple of reasons. The first was that we often found ourself at a bus stop with 20 or 30 other people then a full bus pulls up and 2 people get off and only 2 can get on. So while a bus does arrive evert 15 minutes or so you may not be able to get on it. In our worst case we didn't get on until the 4th bus arrived. The second problem is the bus doesn't travel in a circular or rectangular route. Rather it zigs zags all over town. So you may get on the bus to get you to a location that is 3 blocks away but the bus may may zig zag 30 blocks before arriving at that stop. Most on off city tour buses I have taken take you to the next closest stop and so on. Not the case here. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • MarylandSharon 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Love Miss Pearl We had a private tour with Miss Pearl. She was excellent- very funny. It was pouring rain but we still had a great tour. Afterwards, we did the Hop on Hop off with several drivers- all had a little different spin on the sights. Later in the day, it got harder to find a trolley with space- had to wait longer. It is a great way to get overview of Savannah. Read more Written April 7, 2024

  • socalukgirl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Don't miss, this was a great way to see the city My sister recommended we try this for our first full day in Savannah. What a great idea! I had no idea these trolleys provided you transportation throughout the city where you could jump on and off at your convenience. We first took the tour throughout the city and our guide was Phil. He was awesome!! We did then take a few others during the day, but Phil was the best. He stood out by telling us facts the other guides did not. Forsyth Park is a good distance from the other attractions in the city, so it was nice to be able to hop back on and keep going. It is a bit pricey at $50 a person but you can make the most of it and get a history lesson as well. Read more Written April 7, 2024
  • KGC561 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see the city. These city tours have always been a great way for our family to see a new city. Parking is very limited in this city but we found a parking garage on Liberty Street that charged less than $10 for the day and it was a short walk. It was easy to hop off and walk around then get back on. Seats were always available for our party of 7. The key is to get a great tour guide. The last time we go on we had Linda and she was a tad bit spicy. I just chalked it up to her having a long day though. Read more Written April 7, 2024
