30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Graduation cap and diploma with Allianz Travel insurance website on phone

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! Travel insurance can protect you in the case of unexpected and unforeseen circumstances that may arise on your trip such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, theft, emergency medical expenses and transportation (this is especially important when traveling out of the country!), travel delays, rental car damage, and more.

Even better, also gift your graduate an annual travel insurance plan that protects their trips all year long. It is the perfect gift for kids that will be flying back and forth to college or young adults just starting out in their career and spending their newfound paid time off traveling.

Before we sent our daughter off to college in Arizona, I made sure she was covered by an AllTrips Premier annual travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel. Allianz Travel has been our trusted travel insurance provider for years and the investment has paid off in multitudes. Not only do I know that her trips to school and back are protected against flight cancellations, travel delays, and lost luggage, but as an inexperienced solo traveler it gives us both peace of mind knowing that she has access to a 24-hour hotline for assistance on all sorts of travel emergencies.

18 Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas for 2024

Looking for the best senior trip ideas for your soon-to-be-graduated teenager?

As high school teachers, the parents of a high schooler, and world travelers, we have a lot of experience traveling and talking about travel with young people.

Here are our 18 senior trip ideas for places to travel to celebrate with your graduate.

High School graduation marks an important coming-of-age moment for students and families. And a senior trip offers an opportunity to mark this important moment.

Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links. If you click and purchase, we will receive a commission at no extra charge to you.  We only recommend activities or places we have experienced, and all opinions are our own.

senior trip ideas--what to do after graduation

What Is A Senior Trip?

Traditionally, a senior trip is an opportunity for seniors to have one last experience together as a class before they graduate. In this traditional notion, senior trips are something your senior organizes with their friends.

However, with travel being more accessible to more people, the idea of a senior trip as a special trip taken by a family to celebrate their child’s graduation is fast growing in popularity. Therefore, we have chosen to list our ideas by location not by type.

When To Take a Senior Trip?

Senior Trips are traditionally taken in late May or June soon after the graduation ceremony. Some school districts still allow for senior weeks prior to graduation where students have a few days before graduation to travel or stay together. However, these are far less common.

What Are the Criteria for a Good Senior Trip Destination?

All of the places listed here we have traveled to with our own teens. We have also used our “access” to hundreds of teens over the years to talk not only about our travel but places they would love to see and experience. So each of these locations is full of teen-friendly activities.

However, for each location, we have noted if this trip would be possible for a senior-only trip without parents. We are basing our “senior-only”  recommendations on the following criteria: good public transit and hostels.

Good public transit is an extra important criteria in part because teens aren’t old enough to rent a car. While rideshare platforms like Uber and Lyft may also be possible, these platforms also have age restrictions potentially making them unusable by independent travelers who aren’t 18 or older.

Age Consideration for a Senior Trip: Restriction on Accommodations, Cruises and Rideshares

Neither Uber nor Lyft allow passengers under 18 to have an account. Now, let’s be honest, we all know teens under 18 that use rideshares. But if a driver suspects a rider to be under 18, they have the right to require age verification before completing the trip.

Similarly, most overnight accommodations require guests to be 18 or older. In essence, when you are checking into a hotel or a hostel you are signing a contract. And you must have legal status to make that contract valid.

Therefore, if your child is 17 when they graduate and wants to go on a friend-only senior trip, there will need to be a minimum of one person over 18 who is doing all the accommodation booking, Lyft calling, and hotel or hostel registration. Which means that that person assumes responsibility. Yikes. Definitely, something to consider if your kid is the sole 18-year-old.

Additionally, some places that are perceived as more party places — think Spring Break hotspots – will actually require that guests be at least 21. So, if your graduate is thinking of heading to Cabo, they probably won’t be able to find a hotel to let them stay there.

Cruises are also out for friend-only graduation trips as cruise lines require passengers traveling alone to be over 21.

Finally, and most importantly, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), minors may be able to travel without their parents internationally.  Although  “They may, however, require a notarized written consent letter from both parents.”

Moreover, CBP recommends that “Minors interested in traveling without their parents should contact the embassy [of the country they wish to visit] to address admissibility questions.”

What Type of Travel is Typical for Senior Trips?

While senior trips were traditionally beach vacations (think Spring Break), seniors and their families today are branching out and traveling in different ways to celebrate this important milestone. So for the most part, we have left the beaches off this list.

Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas

Grad nights: the ultimate graduation trip idea.

Both Disneyland and Six Flags have Grad Nights. These nights are absolutely tailored to your graduate. I mean they are called “Grad Night.”

However, with both programs, your child’s school must register for the event. Tickets are purchased from the school so that the parks can verify that the event is only for high school grads. Graduates who are interested in this option should get their schools on board early as school spots, especially for Disneyland, sell out in the early fall.

But if your school was one of those lucky enough to book either a Disneyland or Six Flags Grad Night, let’s get into it.

Disneyland Grad Nights

Although Walt Disney World ditched its Grad Nights way back in 2012, Disneyland still offers these popular nights where grads take over the park. While mostly frequented by local graduates, schools from all over the US can organize Disneyland Grad Night trips.

Offered on 15 nights throughout May and June, Disneyland Grad Nigh ts have 3 different ticket types. The least expensive ticket, which is around $100 per person per night, gets grads into an after-hours party at California Adventure.

If your grads want full-day access to California Adventure, plus the after-hours party, ticket prices go up to around $130. Add a hopper ticket to Disneyland and the tickets shoot up to over $200.

But can the magic of Disney really have a price? Oh wait, it does. But, while the tickets for this night are locked in, there are still ways to plan a trip to Disneyland on a budget , including taking the c heapest way to get from LAX to Disneyland .

Six Flags Grad Night

six flags grad night as a great senior trip idea

Not to be outdone, Six Flags locations also offer an after-hours Grad Night. At the Six Flags party, the park is only open to those students and chaperones with a grad night ticket.

Grads can enjoy thrilling rides, DJs and dance floors throughout the park, and yummy food. However, unlike Disneyland with its dozens of nights, Six Flag locations have 1 or 2 nights in either May or June dedicated to this event.

Tickets vary based on the Six Flags location. And grads with a Six Flags pass still need to buy a special event ticket.

So What If My School Didn’t Book a Grad Night Experience?

Of course, senior trips to both of these parks and to others can certainly happen outside of these special nights. Although these nights are tailored to graduates, any night in Disneyland is….well, magical.

Graduation Trip Ideas in the United States

Even if the United States is home, there is still so much to see and do to make a special graduate trip in the country. From the beaches of Los Angeles to the stages of Broadway, a US trip is a great way to start your graduate on their next American dream.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is perfect if your graduate is a fan of beaches, movie stars, and of course….Disney. If Disneyland is your destination, these are the best parks for teens.

Otherwise, with beaches, sunshine, and great eats, there is truly so much more to Los Angeles than the Magical Kingdom.

If your graduate is thinking of a friend-only trip to L.A., a few words to the wise.

While we use public transit whenever we are in Los Angeles, families are justified to be a bit leery of sending their new graduate to L.A. on a friend-only trip. L.A. is after all a very car-heavy city.

So, for the graduate who is dreaming of some friend-only time in the California sun, we definitely recommend Venice Beach. A short ride share from LAX, graduates can enjoy bike riding on the beach or people-watching at the skatepark. Venice Beach also has some great hostels . And once you get there, a bike is all your graduate needs to get around.

Long Beach is also a great California beach town with lots to see and do with teenagers .

bike riding in Venice Beach is a great senior trip idea

While senior trips are traditionally taken in May or June, we can’t help but put an early senior trip recommendation on the list.

While Denver is one of our favorite US cities year-round, a ski trip to really lean into that senioritis during your graduate’s last Spring Break is also a great idea.

With its proximity to the mountains, Denver has numerous ski resorts within 60 miles of the city. Never skied before, check out our list of the best ski resorts in Colorado for beginners .

While we definitely recommend a family trip to the mountains to celebrate the impending milestone, a ski trip to Colorado is also possible for a friend-only trip.

Breckenridge is the best resort for a friend-only ski trip as it has the Bivvi hostel . And graduates can book a shuttle directly from Denver International Airport to Breckenridge.

If skiing is not your think don’t worry. The city of Denver has so many things to do with teens .

In the heart of downtown Denver is Elitch Gardens, a popular amusement park. You can also see a baseball game, take in a concert at Red Rocks, or a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Denver, Colorado truly has something for everyone.

What graduate wouldn’t want to celebrate their achievements in the Big Apple? With great entertainment, great food, and a beautiful skyline, New York is an exciting place to celebrate the achievements of your graduates.

And of all the U.S. cities, New York is one of the easiest to navigate using public transit. And for that reason, New York is also a great location for a friend-only senior trip.

Of course, hotels in Manhattan are known for their high prices. But if your graduate is open to dorm-style accommodations, the city can be theirs for around $60 a night.

If island time is your graduate’s idea of a dream trip, we definitely recommend Kauai. With its rugged landscape and opportunities for adventures, Kauai is a perfect place to unwind after the busy weeks leading up to graduation.

Even a short 3 days in Kauai is an excellent graduation trip.

A trip to Kauai should involve two things, bike riding and kayaking the Wailua River to Secret Falls. And we can help you with both.

Two Bikes Near a Fence in Kauai

But we definitely do not recommend Kauai for a friend-only trip. While there is public transit on the island, a car is really necessary to get around the island.

One of our best tips for traveling with teens is to include adventure and Alaska has that covered.

The wild open spaces of Alaska are a monumental place to welcome this new phase in a graduate’s life. From the bears of Denali National Park to the whales of Seward, Alaska is definitely a must-see for any nature-loving graduate.

Our 10-day itinerary takes you from Fairbanks to Denali down to Seward and then to Anchorage. Our trip was all done by public transit so the trip could be replicated on a friend-only trip.

Alaska is also an excellent trip with family with so many things to do that everyone will enjoy.

And while HostelWorld, which is the platform we use to book hostels, only has listings in Fairbanks and Anchorage . There are several independent hostels in Seward and Denali, the two other stops on our itinerary.

Graduation Trip Ideas in Central and South America

With the exception of Mexico City and Peru, several of these locations are perfect for your beach-loving graduates.

We love traveling in Central and South America not only because it is much more budget-friendly than Europe. But also because it allows us to expand our knowledge of diverse cultures.

Be aware that the ideal time to travel to Central and South America is really December-April. By May and June, many of these locations may be getting pretty hot as you are going during the dry season.

Mexico City

We love Mexico City. It is truly one of our favorite cities in Central and South America and has so many things for teens to experience.

With amazing street food, charming neighborhoods, and the most museums per capita of any city in the world, Mexico City is a truly remarkable place to spend 3-4 days .

While Mexico City is a megalopolis, as long as you and your graduate are smart travelers, Mexico City is safe. If you have concerns, pay special attention to the Mexico City neighborhood where you and/or your graduate stays.

We love the Historic Center, but others prefer La Condesa or Roma. And with numerous hostels and a great public transit system, Mexico City is also a good option for a friend-only trip.

Easily accessible from the United States and English speaking, Belize is an easy first international trip for US travelers. And for those who are looking for a warm vacation will be rewarded with coral reefs, delicious pupusas, and days and days of sun.

If you are making your way to the islands and are on a budget or want to travel more sustainably, we definitely recommend taking the water taxi over a flight .

Not only does the water taxi offer significant savings, you have an opportunity to travel with the locals. And who knows, a dolphin might decide to befriend your boat as one did with ours.

For your animal-loving graduate who doesn’t necessarily love the cold of Alaska, Costa Rica is an excellent choice.

One of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Costa Rica is the perfect place to shake off the stress of the past few months and live life “Pura Vida” with your newly graduated teenager.

We lived in Costa Rica and travel back often with our own son so we know there are so many things to do with teenagers.

The two coastlines of Costa Rica are so different, we recommend traveling to both. But if you don’t have as much time as we do in our 10-day Costa Rican itinerary, then we definitely recommend the Caribbean side.

Be aware that the drinking age in Costa Rica , and most of Central and South America, is 18 years old. You will definitely want to negotiate with your senior if you have concerns about most seniors ability to legally drink in the country.

One of our most unforgettable trips in all of our years of traveling together as a family has been our time in Peru. While we definitely don’t recommend this trip as a friend-only experience given the more complex travel moves, we can not say enough about how important this trip has been to us.

Whether you go as long as we did on our 3-week Pervian itinerary or just focus on Cusco and Machu Picchu, we promise that your time in Peru will be an amazing send-off to your graduate.

Graduation Trip Ideas in Europe

We have taken our own teen to Europe numerous times, and certainly recommend so much of the continent to you.

With its excellent public transit system, amazing food, and noteworthy sites, any graduate would be thrilled to mark their achievement in Europe.

Europe’s extensive public transit makes Europe a very viable friend-only trip.

But please note that June starts the high season in Europe so if you are planning a traditional senior trip in May or June, earlier is definitely better.

Bike in front of the Spanish Steps

We love Italy for a trip with teenagers. With its iconic architecture, renowned sites, and delicious gelato, there is so much here to experience. We have a 7-day Italy itinerary with teens that is perfect for a senior trip.  The entire trip is taken on high-speed trains, so our itinerary could also work for a friend-only trip.

Regardless of where in Italy you travel, we definitely think Rome should be at the center of your time in Italy. Rome has s o many experiences for teenagers .

Like the other European cities on this list, Rome has great hostels and public transit making it especially great for a friend-only trip.

It is also hard to imagine going to Italy without seeing Venice with your graduate . Venice gets busy in the summer. If your child’s graduation is at the end of May, we recommend leaving ASAP and starting your trip in Venice to skirt the crowds as much as possible.

Paris is a wonderful senior trip either as a family experience or a friend-only trip.

With numerous high-quality hostels in Paris and extremely comprehensive public transit throughout the city and countryside, the City of Lights is a smart choice for graduates to explore on their own.

While June starts the high season in Paris, there are still ways for families on a budget to experience the city.

And since your goal for a trip to Paris will be to immerse your graduate in all the art, architecture, and culture, we definitely recommend the Paris Pass as a way to save money while taking in all the sites.

Scandinavia

Some of the best European cities are found in the Scandinavian countries, including our favorite of Copenhagen, Denmark. Scandinavia’s family-friendly culture (and its love of our favorite mode of transit, the bike) make it an uplifting place to have one more family holiday before your graduate leaves home.

In addition to Denmark and Sweden, our Scandinavian itinerary includes a stopover in Iceland through Icelandic Airlines’ free stopover program.  Iceland has grown in great popularity over the last few years.

While we have loved our time in Iceland, most tourists need a car to see this island nation. While one can also see the country through bus tours, this dependence of cars to see the ring of the island makes it a less good friend-only trip.

Spain is truly one of our favorite countries. There are so many great things to do in Spain with teenagers , making the country perfect for a senior trip.

From its vibrant city of Madrid to the architectural wonder that is Barcelona, your senior will love the food, culture, and overall vibe that is Spain.

The city of Madrid is a great senior trip idea

Madrid is definitely the easiest city to base out of in Spain. The city itself has so much to see and do for teenagers .

We have loved and explored so many European cities with our teen, from Antwerp to Lucerne , but Madrid is still top of our list because of its location, culture and relative affordability.

In Madrid there are cultured experiences at the world-famous art museum, The Prado, and more teenager-focused experiences like the amusement park, Parque de Atracciones.

Our 4-day Madrid itinerary will help you plan your time.

However, one of the great advantages of Madrid is its high-speed trains. Whether it is the medieval city of Toledo or the seaside city of Barcelona, all of Spain can be easily accessed by train from Madrid.

In Madrid city center, there is also a unique Art Seven Hostel Capsules , where your senior can rent their own capsule to sleep. Yep, you heard it right…a capsule. Making Madrid specifically a great place in Spain for a first-timer trip with friends.

If you do choose Spain or most other European countries, be aware that the legal drinking age is 18 . In Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and Belgium the drinking age is lower.

Budget Senior Trip Ideas

Out here in the West, a weekend camping trip is the way our own senior students celebrate their graduation as a class.

Camping is the perfect senior trip in that it allows students to use their own transportation and no accommodations are needed beyond that old, trusty, nylon tent.

And is there a better place to say your goodbyes, then out under the stars with a fire roaring and that one talented friend playing away on her acoustic guitar?

While everyone loves to spend a night away, day trips are another great budget choice for seniors to celebrate with friends.

In our town of Boise, Idaho, graduating classes can drive a few hours to 470 foot sand dunes at Bruneau State Park or head to Lucky Peak Reservoir to spend the day at the lake.

A great day trip is less than a 2 hour drive, but has a different feel than the everyday. For coastal places, a day trip could be an all-class trip to the ocean. For those in the West, it could be a day in a National Park.

Staycations

It really isn’t about the distance, but the memories. And staycations are a great chance to organize a trip to make some final memories. Some of our graduating classes senior staycations have included:

  • Indoor Laser Tag
  • The Area Zoo
  • Miniature Golf

This list is also great for “senior skip day,” but don’t tell anyone that this teacher promoted that tradition.

A senior trip is a great way to celebrate this important milestone in your child’s life. Whether it is a friends-only trip or a family affair, making memories through travel is always, always a good idea.

Need other ideas for best travel gifts for teenagers . We have 60+ ideas for every type of teen.

Should I take a senior trip with friends if I am 17?

There are many travel restrictions for minors, including booking a hotel and using a rideshare. Traveling without your parents once you turn 18 eases many of those restrictions.

Minors who want to plan a senior trip might consider traveling locally.

Are senior trips only with friends?

While senior trips are traditionally thought to be trips or events for graduates and their peers, more and more families are taking senior trips with their graduates to commemorate the event.

Top 10 Amazing Destinations for a Graduation Trip in 2021

Published by rachel bicha on may 23, 2021 may 23, 2021.

You’re graduating! Now what? Well, amidst the job searching, deciding where you’re going to live now that you’re not next door to all your college friends, generally trying to figure life out and dealing with a impending sense of doom (or is that just your student loans?), it’s probably time for a quick vacay. And by quick vacay, we mean an epic graduation trip, of course.

After four years (or more!) of hard work at school, you definitely deserve a week (or two or five) of relaxing and exploring the world before you settle down and actually start that 9-5 life. TREAT YOSELF.

But since the world definitely looks different now than it did when you started college, the hardest part might be deciding where to go—and where you can go. Need some inspiration? We’ve got 10 of our favorite destinations for graduation trips in 2021. Need some cheap deals ? We can find those for you, too.

1. Go diving (or snorkeling) in Belize.

senior trip ideas out of country

Belize is an underrated destination that makes for a perfect graduation trip in 2021. From world-class scuba diving and snorkeling thanks to the massive Belize Barrier Reef, you can soak up the summer sun exploring a completely new world in the ocean. Not a swimmer? No problem. Belize is also home to jungles, rainforests, Mayan ruins, tiny islands, caves, waterfalls, trails and more. If you want some adventure before diving into real life, Belize has literally everything you need.

2. Camp at a National Park.

Wanna spend some time in the great outdoors after weeks of late-night cram sessions? Camping at a National Park is a great (and cheap!) way to enjoy some low-key adventuring. If you haven’t been to Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion or the Grand Canyon, the summer (and early fall) is definitely a great time to go! Pro tip: summer prices at the parks can be more expensive than other times of the year, so plan ahead and travel in early or late summer (i.e. May/June or September) if you can.

3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Go big or go home, right?

Dubai has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. From sandboarding to skiing (yes, even in the summer!), dune driving to hot air ballooning, Dubai has just about every adventure activity you can dream of, plus more.

Of course, you should also take the time to soak in Dubai’s city life, too. Dubai is FULL of entertainment and things to do. From the ultra-modern skyscrapers like the famous Burj Khalifa to Dubai’s Old Quarter, Dubai is a city where modernity meets centuries of culture and history.

9 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget

By Megan Spurrell

A graduation vacation is about more than knocking back drinks in a foreign land. Such adventures can also offer moments of reflection on what lies ahead. Choosing how to spend this milestone trip isn’t easy, either. In addition to setting a budget and choosing your travel companions, recent grads should consider what they want to get out of the trip, advises Shelby Albo, travel consultant at Embarc Collective . Here, we’ve pulled together nine unforgettable graduation trip ideas that appeal to a range of travel styles—no matter what your budget is.

The other Southeast Asia loop

“Backpacking trips in a foreign country are truly unbeatable, especially for graduation,” says Jen Richardson, a travel planner at Scouted . We all know the classic loop through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and it’s a great one—the region is affordable for travelers spending U.S. dollars and there is no shortage of cultural sites, natural wonders, and lively parties. But you can find all of that and more on a less-traveled path farther south.  In Indonesia, visit the bustling capital of Jakarta, scooter between rice fields in Ubud, and kick back on the postcard-perfect islands of Lombok and Bali . Experience a mix of cultures in Malaysia by tasting laksa curry on the streets of Penang and visiting the Hindu temples in the Batu Caves, then swing down to Singapore . It isn’t cheap by any stretch, but a few days in the street food capital—which has colorful architecture, lush hiking trails, and a high-tech airport with a butterfly garden and movie theater—are worth the end-of-trip-splurge.

A weekend (or longer) in Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth is an easy flight from much of the U.S., and you don’t even need a passport. If you have just a weekend, book an Airbnb in one of the candy-colored colonial buildings of Old San Juan, where reggaeton and salsa fill the streets and the Bad Bunny–approved cocktail bar La Factoría comes alive seven nights a week. If you have five to seven days to explore, plan a multi-stop road trip around the island—surfing on the West Coast, night kayaking in one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays, and baking on the dazzling white sands of Culebra Island.

South India immersion

You want to go far, but you don’t want to go alone: Intrepid Travel’s group trips are built around this premise, with accessible price points always front of mind. The outfitter’s two-week Real South India trip (from $909 per person) is a great graduation trip idea—it takes up to 16 free spirits (ages 18 to 29) from Hyderabad to Kochi, with five stops and two overnight trains in between. See Bollywood film sets in Ramoji Film City, explore Hindu temples in Mamallapuram, observe elephants and tigers in Bandipur National Park, and feast on stuffed dosa in Madurai. The rate covers guides, accommodations, select meals, and numerous activities; set your Google Flights tracker now for a stellar airline deal.

The Utah parks circuit

Grab a few pals and pile into a van to go park-hopping in Utah . The state’s national parks and monuments promise slot canyons ( Zion and Grand Staircase-Escalante), forests of rock hoodoos ( Bryce Canyon ), sand dunes (at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park), and bright red rock carved by the Colorado River (Canyonlands), to name just a few of the Beehive State’s otherworldly landscapes. Spend your days hiking and evenings camping under the stars—the Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park is worth planning around—in settings so stunning, they'll stick with you for a lifetime.

A sunny Caribbean cruise

After years of grinding, you might be ready to simply laze in the sun—a true treat-yourself moment before starting college or before your first job begins. Book a spot on a Caribbean cruise , which will have space for all of your friends and won’t require you to lift a single finger once you are onboard. Royal Caribbean offers a huge selection of affordable cruises departing from New York, Florida, and Galveston, Texas. Go for one of the five-night options , which stop in the crystalline waters of Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman, and offer plenty of nightlife and poolside entertainment options to keep things interesting.

Southern U.S. road trip

For a memorable American road trip, make the drive from Atlanta to West Texas , with stops in New Orleans and Austin en route. You’ll find music and nightlife all along the way—Atlanta’s Trap Music Museum and Second Line parades weaving through the streets of NOLA are not to be missed—plus roadside photo ops (hello, Marfa Prada store ). Scrimp by staying at Airbnbs in each destination; if you’re traveling with just a friend or two, rented rooms, instead of private apartments, are a great way to meet other travelers. Staying at locally owned properties is "such a good way to support the local culture and will make for a rich experience,” says Richardson.

A tour through South America

This may not be among the first graduation trip ideas that come to mind, but why not put those years of Spanish to use in South America? While the distances are greater than those in Southeast Asia, and the prices somewhat higher, sticking to the northwestern edge of the continent will give you the best bang for your buck. Plus, “planes are super affordable,” says Katalina Mayorga, founder of El Camino Travel , thanks to new budget lines such as Viva Air Colombia and Star Perú.  In four to eight weeks, you can hit the Caribbean coast in Colombia (with stops in Cartagena and Tayrona National Natural Park); the Andean cities of Medellín , Quito , and La Paz ; and ogle natural wonders like the Amazon rain forest (best accessed via Iquitos, Peru), the Uyuni salt flats of southwest Bolivia, and, of course, Machu Picchu . From learning about Afro-Caribbean dance to touring Inca archaeological sites, you’ll have loads to talk about with the fellow travelers you meet in hostels along the way.

Eastern Europe backpacking trip

“European backpacking trips are still very popular,” says Albo. “The ease of traveling from one country to another is an attractive aspect.” Not only is Eastern Europe more affordable than France, Spain, and Italy, it’s less crowded than its western neighbors—despite offering just as many reasons to visit. In dreamy Old World cities like Prague and Budapest , regal churches and castles are just as appealing as the edgy nightlife scenes. (Want to party in a converted bunker? Done.) By train or bus, get out to the scenic countryside and hike the Tatras mountains that border Slovakia and Poland before exploring the quaint old town of Gdańsk. Trust us—you’ll leave wondering why the rest of your friends haven’t considered Eastern Europe yet.

The Camino de Santiago

There’s something enticing about marking one milestone with another. For travelers who want to do it in hiking boots , a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is an ideal challenge. The Camino refers to a network of trails that all lead to a shrine of Saint James the Great in Galicia, Spain, with several starting points throughout the country. Beginners, however, are recommended to follow the Camino Frances route, which begins just over the border in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. The journey takes 30 to 35 days and includes overnights in albergues (bed-and-breakfasts). If you find yourself needing a little motivation along the trail, just visualize the tapas and vino waiting for you each night.

Best Senior Travel Destinations in 2024

amie-clark

With COVID-19 vaccination rates on the rise, it looks like this summer will be safer for travel than the last one. Especially if you and your loved ones are vaccinated, there’s no reason you can’t get out of the house and explore what the country has to offer.

No matter what your budget or style preference, there’s a vacation destination for you. The following senior travel destinations are some of my personal favorites, in addition to those of our staff writers.

1. US National Parks

There’s more than one reason for preserving natural beauty, and one of those is so people can continue to view it, savor it, and, ideally, go back home with a keener, and broader, appreciation of the value of the world around them. The U.S. currently has 59 protected areas. Having taken Amtrak up to Montana’s East Glacier National Park, as well as having driven to the Grand Canyon, this writer can honestly state that, not only was the cost of these comfortable trips surprisingly low but the memories also remain indelible.

From California’s Death Valley to Alaska’s Denali, from Florida’s Everglades to Utah’s Canyonlands –– nature’s offerings are infinite, awe-inspiring, and deeply inspirational. For more details on what any of these parks can offer in the way of accommodations, tours, classes, and other recreational activities, check out the National Park Service website. Also, be sure to look into the national park pass for seniors .

Biking in Badlands National Park

2. Disney World, Florida

It’s forgivable if the first thing that comes to mind after reading “Disney World” are the sights and sounds of lots of excited children and long lines. With new COVID restrictions in place, however, park attendance is limited, and rigorous safety measures have been put in place, ensuring that guests will have a socially distanced and pleasant experience. True, Disney World does not offer senior discounts on tickets or accommodations, but you may find discounts at other sites like AAA or AARP.

My personal favorite park would have to be Epcot. Older adults, especially, can appreciate the park’s world showcase, which takes you on a culinary and visual journey through 11 different countries, including Mexico, Japan, and Italy. Even if you can’t currently travel the world, Epcot creates as entertaining of a simulation as possible.

3. Sedona, Arizona

When most people think of Arizona, their mind tends to conjure up images of cacti, rattlesnakes, and scorching hot temperatures. Departing from this image is the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. Less than a two-hour drive from the Phoenix airport, Sedona is a sightseer’s dream with its beautiful red rock cliffs and rock formations. Oh yeah, and unlike other parts of the state, Sedona’s average summer temperatures rarely exceed 90 degrees.

Some of my favorite activities in Sedona include hiking, bird watching, and Jeep Tours of the geological wonders. Especially for those into yoga and New Age medicine, Sedona has plenty of offerings. Additionally, if you simply want to kick back and relax, Sedona offers many hotels and resorts, and nothing beats taking in the stunning sunset at Cathedral Rock.

Sedona's Cathedral Rock at Sunset

Although Alaska is one of the least frequently visited states in the country (possibly due to its distance), there’s no beating the natural wonders of this state. For those inclined towards outdoor activities, Alaska contains 17 national parks. For those who want a more relaxing trip, Anchorage and Juneau offer all the creature comforts you’d expect.

With COVID rates trending downwards, it’s also a great time to book one of the fabulous cruises along the Alaskan coast. They’re a great way to take in the natural wonders while staying in resort-style amenities, not to mention you’ll be enjoying this all in average temperatures around 70 degrees.

Alaskan Coastline

5. Pacific Coast Highway, California

If you’ve ever considered hitting the road with your loved ones and exploring the country via RV , then there’s one route I can’t recommend enough: the Pacific Coast Highway. People often call California its own country in and of itself, and if you travel even part of this 600 mile stretch of coastal road, it’s easy to see why.

The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH for short), spans all the way from San Francisco to San Diego, and it’s considered one of the most scenic and beautiful roads in the world. From the glistening fields of wine country down to the surfing villages of southern California, there’s something along this road for everyone.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Long popular with tourists, this senior-friendly city only becomes more so as time goes on. Culturally, there are few cities of this size that could offer more and, thanks to technological advances, the ways to appreciate it also continue to grow. If you want to see the city and the surrounding area from a fresh perspective, then why not engage in the two-and-a-half-hour scavenger hunt from Tour Beaver.

While covering about one-and-three-quarters miles, and using smartphones or tablets, the players are fed clues and puzzles which they solve, while simultaneously exploring the city. If the scavenger hunt idea appeals to you, Santa Fe is only one of many cities that offer them. Keep in mind that there are those who say the best time to visit this lovely, sunny city is from September to November when the temperatures are most comfortable for the majority of folks. No matter when you go, though, take your sunscreen.

The Best Months to Travel in the Best Years of Your Life

Are you thinking about a late summer vacation? You should be! There are so many wonderful reasons to take a vacation in August, September, or October. As a senior living out your retirement, you are no longer burdened with a work rigid schedule or the challenges that come with back-to-school activities. Take advantage of your freedom and read about the perks of taking a late summer vacation!

August: The World Is Calling

A cost-effective way to check off “exotic world travel” from your bucket list is to book your dream vacation for mid-to-late August. Prices start to drop as tourists head home.

While the Mediterranean countries are still basking in the hot sun, the Scandinavian countries, with their comfortable temperatures and Northern Lights, make memorable travel destinations.

August is the vacation month for many Europeans, so crowds on the streets of Paris and London start thinning. Europe offers a wealth of urban delights such as Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary, or Vienna in Austria. Since you have the luxury of leisure, instead of a hectic tour of 10 cities in 10 days, pick one spectacular location and savor the sights. Linger in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy a less demanding itinerary.

Closer to home, golfers and anglers will find the mountains of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England abound with the top-rated greens, fast-moving streams, and quaint little towns.

Splurge with an overnight at a local B&B or a couple’s day at a spa. The latest trend in B&B hospitality includes fresh-from-the-garden meals.

With no school groups to crowd your view, enjoy the exhibits at local museums, historic homes, or gardens. Some of the best reasons to retire to Pennsylvania are also the best reasons to visit! Imagine exploring your nation’s birthplace without fighting traffic and waiting in line with other summertime tourists.

Check out end-of-the-season group rentals. Beaches and lakes make an inviting girls-only trip.

Travel Tip #1: Be sure to wear flats on cobblestone streets. Use the hotel safe for your valuables, passport, etc.

September: Water Temperatures Are Ideal, Crowds Have Checked Out

September may be the perfect month to head to the beach, as temperatures, crowds, and lodging prices all tend to start dropping around this time of year. Your only company on the sand may be a flock of seagulls and a few treasure hunters. There will be no long waits at restaurants. Don’t forget to schedule a boat trip, fishing trip, or for the more adventurous, an evening kayak paddle on the ocean.

If you find that you like off-season vacation-style living, you may want to check out Acts Retirement’s 10 Reasons to Retire to South Carolina. Here’s a hint, southern-style hospitality combined with coastal views tends to make people very happy.

Take a drive or bus ride through the countryside before the leaf peepers jam the roads. Don’t miss the antique stores and roadside produce stands along the way. Local apple orchards often include a taste of fresh-made cider, slices of apple pie, and bags of your favorite Macs (not the computer!).

Bring back childhood memories with a trip to a country fair. Take a selfie with a prize-winning sheep, thrill to the roar of tractor pulls, or enjoy a nostalgic ride on a merry-go-round. Of course, you’ll ruin your diet with the pleasure of sampling funnel cakes, sausage smothered in onions and peppers, and cotton candy. But what are vacations for if not letting loose and enjoying life?

Organize your own bus trip. Limousine rental companies welcome mini-bus or six-passenger town car rentals during the week. Gather a group of history buffs, art lovers, or other like-minded day-trippers and split the rental. You are the masters of your travel itinerary and can stop along the way at cute stores and eateries.

Travel Tip #2: Leave your expensive jewelry at home.

October: Harvest Celebrations Abound

October brings harvest season, Octoberfest merriment, and dozens of other reasons to get out of the recliner. Check your local newspaper for all the Fall events in your area or enjoy a vacation filled with crisp autumn sights, sounds, and smells.

All nature lovers must experience the beauty of the northeast’s changing seasons. The vibrant colors of the leaves mixed with a slight chill and warm cider are enough to make anyone giddy to pull out their plaid and travel to Pennsylvania, New York, or Connecticut. Rent a cabin and make a week or weekend of it!

Combine a visit with grandkids and a weekday tour. While the kids are in school, explore the local area. Make a family visit an opportunity to expand your horizons.

Senior Safety Travel Tip: Don’t hesitate to tell your innkeeper or hotel concierge your itinerary. Tell them where you’re going and when you expect to be back. Keep a cell phone on you at all times, along with your hotel and family contact information.

Retirement should be some of the best years of your life! Open yourself up to new experiences and new possibilities. You’ve worked to build the world we live in, now it’s time to pick your head up and experience it.

Are you looking for some awesome graduation trip ideas for your senior? I’ve been there and I have a list of ideas that are perfect for your teen!

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

graduation trip ideas 1 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

graduation trip ideas 2 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

Why visiting Walt Disney World is better with older children.

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Alaska National Parks Road Trip

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

  • Tyler Place Family Resort – Vermont
  • Bungalows Key Largo – Florida Keys
  • Fair Hills Resort – Minnesota

I would recommend one of the many charming VRBO rentals near the National Park for perfect family seclusion.

Group Graduation Vacation Ideas with Friends

If you’re willing to send your teen off with a group of friends, now’s the perfect time to learn some independence and responsibility. Of course, you may want to read my tips for a graduate here . These ideas for the best senior trips with friends are full of adventure.

10. Road Trips

Who doesn’t love a road trip ? With some careful planning, you can create an unforgettable experience that will be one of your teen’s favorite memories from high school. Whether it’s going to visit colleges or seeing national landmarks, there are so many great graduation trip ideas for teens.

For ideas, look to the miles and miles of ideas in Road Trip USA by Moon guides . Perhaps they want to re-enact the Oregon Trail?

A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

11. National Park Hiking

Take a hike. The nation’s outdoor spaces are vast and beautiful, and they’re within easy reach of most towns. National parks are the best places for a senior trip.

Get your teen a National Parks Pass that they can use all year long and save on entrance fees.

Just because your teen graduated doesn’t mean he or she has to sit inside studying all summer! A hike is a perfect way to get some fresh air and test his or her new sense of responsibility. For bucket list destinations try Yosemite National Park or Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Rafting down the Colorado River

12. White Water Rafting Grand Canyon

The Colorado River is one of America’s greatest rivers and it has a history steeped in both adventure and danger. Paddle through parts of the Grand Canyon.

They’ll get to see up close stunning views, and spend some quality time with their friends.

Plus you don’t need any previous experience to participate— professional guides will take care of all that for you! For a guided tour, search here .

13. South Padre Island

Is a beach destination worth considering if your grads want to head to an island? The island is located on South Padre Island along Texas’s Gulf Coast and offers tons of things to do including surfing, swimming, and fishing. These activities are perfect for spending time with their friends while giving them an adventure they won’t forget. There are also plenty of hotels to choose from that offer packages geared toward students, making it easy to plan a fun trip!

14. Music Festivals

For an experience that will bring your teen and her friends closer together, send her off to a music festival. Plus, it’s a great way to stay connected with your child in an age when texting and Snapchat takes precedence over phone calls and weekend visits. And because most music festivals take place at different times of the year, there’s sure to be one she’ll love no matter what time of year it is.

Graduation Trip Ideas include beaches with palm trees and people in the shade.

Beach Destinations

If a tropical destination is what your grad has in mind, you don’t need to leave the country. Either the island nation of Puerto Rico or the southernmost spot of Key West are great ideas for a graduation trip.

graduation trip ideas 5 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

We’re back in Hawaii, this time to Maui for surf’s up. For a graduation trip you’ll never forget, Maui is one of our top picks. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunsets, it’s one of Hawaii’s most popular destinations. There are plenty of things to do on your trip here including visiting historic sites like Pearl Harbor and snorkeling in Makena. There are also opportunities for surfing, hiking, and exploring rainforests.

For those who want to hit some waves while they’re in town, you can choose from several options when it comes to surfing lessons . At Kahului Beach Park (the birthplace of modern surfing), there are instructors available that will teach you how to ride surfboards as well as stand-up paddleboards.

**2024 Note** Maui, due to the fires, may not be ready to welcome visitors yet. Be sure to inquire with locals before booking your trip to ensure you’re not doing more harm than good by traveling there.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

If you have culture or movie buffs as kids, some of the bigger cities might be just what they want to experience. We’ve already mentioned what a great place New York City is on a budget. If you’re willing to splurge, look to add an On Location Movie Tour . They have TV & Movie Sites , Marvel , and more. Check out the NYC and Boston Tours here.

girl in front of tall buildings on the Chicago river

19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

One of LA’s top attractions is Universal Studios . It has rides, shows, and a lot more fun to offer. If your grad likes Harry Potter, this is the place to try all kinds of butterbeer . Everyone will be amazed by what they see there. Also, try to attend an NBA game at Staples Center.

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

graduation trip ideas 6 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

Graduation Trip Ideas

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

And of course, if you’re like me, and grew up on 90s grunge, visiting the birthplace of your favorite artists with your teen is an incredible shared experience.

Outside the main city, visit Olympic National Park , a vast park of nearly a million acres with several distinct ecosystems, including a rainforest.

If you have a little extra time, about 3 hours from Seattle is North Cascades National Park.

24. Portland

Portland, Oregon is known for its weirdness. In fact, it’s their slogan, Keep Portland Weird.

Portland is filled with quirky neighborhoods, artisanal spirit, and a thriving food scene. The city has a vibe like no other.

Additionally, Portland is committed to sustainability and green energy. Be on the lookout for how they are keeping to “green” practices that connect it to the nature around it.

Favorites in Portland include Powell’s City of Books, one of the world’s largest independent bookstores, the Japanese gardens, and nearby drives to dozens of waterfalls.

Best Vacation Ideas and Destinations for Seniors

Updated January 4, 2023

Travel tops the to-do lists of most people of retirement age and older, according to the AARP—a group that ought to know. “Research after research has shown that it’s the number-one aspiration for those 50 and older,” says Maria Gillen, director of the AARP’s travel website . “We’re big believers in the idea of travel and its benefits to relationships and health.”

Medical studies have found that those benefits include healthier hearts and brains as well as a reduced risk of depression. Not to mention what a good vacation can do for your social media feeds.

But where to go? While the circumstances of those 65 and older vary widely with regard to budget, interests, and physical abilities, we think you’ll find a few enticing options among the 10 senior-friendly spots that follow. We’ve thrown in some expert tips along the way, too.

Ooh Aah Point at the Grand Canyon in Arizona

GOOD FOR : adventure, discounts, road trips, multigenerational fun

No matter where you land on the outdoorsy spectrum—from those who peer into the Grand Canyon from the rim (pictured above) to those who paddle through it on a canoe—the wonders of the U.S. national parks system are accessible to visitors with a range of inclinations and physical abilities. Not every traveler over 65 will want to haul herself up the sheer rock face of El Capitan at Yosemite. But how about a ranger-led nature walk amid the geysers of Yellowstone ? Or a scenic drive past forests, wildflowers, and maybe a black bear or two in the Great Smoky Mountains ? For a onetime fee of $80, Americans aged 62 or older can get the National Park Service's  lifetime senior pass  to experience all the natural splendor they could ever want to see.

Beach in Cuba

GOOD FOR : relaxation, low physical activity

“Our research for travel trends,” says Gillen of the AARP, “shows that a top motivator is relaxing and rejuvenating—this idea of wanting to get away from normal everyday obligations.” If taking it easy is what you’re after, the Caribbean supplies an ideal setting, with its velvety sands, sky-blue waters, and flip-flop-friendly weather. Those who have trouble getting around might want to see the region via ocean cruise. All the major lines have worked to make their ships and excursions more accessible for all passengers (if you have specific needs, call ahead to let the cruise company know). A cruise is one of the easiest ways to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba  (pictured above) happen, too. To rent wheelchairs and other mobility equipment for a cruise, visit Scootaround or Special Needs at Sea .

And for some destination inspiration, our features on our favorite islands in the Bahamas , beaches on Antigua , and tourist-free experiences on Barbados should give you a good start.

Cruise ship in Juneau, Alaska

GOOD FOR : easy pace, low to high activity level

A cruise is also a great way for seniors to journey through scenic swathes of Germany , Austria , and Hungary , courtesy of iconic European waterways such as the Danube and the Rhine . “River cruises allow you to have a more intimate experience and see more places,” the AARP’s Gillen points out, referring to itineraries that string together up-close views of bankside castles, vineyards, storybook villages, and showstopping cities including Vienna and Budapest . Yet despite the multitude of sights, the pace on deck is nice and easy, with picturesque landscapes scrolling by like the world’s most impressive stage backdrop. Of course, travelers craving more action can opt for excursions involving wine tastings, opera performances, and bike tours—many with electric-assist bikes for those who need a little added pedal power on hills and steep medieval streets. Pictured: Cochem Castle along the Rhine River in Germany

New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe

GOOD FOR : healthy climate, outdoor adventure, arts and culture

Santa Fe ’s Spanish Colonial adobe buildings and magical setting in the foothills of the rose-tinted Sangre de Cristo Mountains have made New Mexico’s capital city a magnet for artists and other scenery hounds for generations. Additional lures for the 65-and-over set: a warm, dry climate and a compact and walkable historic downtown centered on a leafy plaza that dates to the early 1600s. You don’t have to stroll far to find scores of art galleries, museums paying tribute to the region’s rich Native American traditions, and restaurants serving Southwestern cuisine (devotees of chocolate and chili peppers take note). Depending on the time of year, rugged types can go hiking or skiing in the surrounding mountains.

Machu Picchu in Peru

GOOD FOR : bucket lists, adventure, group tours

The epic way to approach  Peru ’s mysterious citadel in the Andes is a hike along the Inca Trail. But if an arduous trek in high altitudes doesn’t sound like it's for you, that doesn’t mean you have to scratch Machu Picchu off your bucket list. A train from Cusco will get you there, too, and you’ll be treated to spectacular views of lush valleys and snow-capped peaks along the way. A guided group tour can help not only with planning and accommodating specific needs but also with meeting new people. “One thing we do see [about] the value of package tours,” says Gillen of the AARP, “is being able to socialize with others”—especially during solo trips, “a topic that we’ve seen pop in our online community.” You can browse hundreds of available Machu Picchu tours at a clearinghouse site such as Travelstride , which even has a filter for tours marketed to travelers 50 and up .

Note : Keep tabs on the level of political turmoil in Peru before booking a trip there, and consider purchasing travel insurance to protect yourself.

Moraine Lake at Banff National Park in Alberta, Canaa

GOOD FOR : train trips, outdoor activities, photography

Another stunning natural landscape that can easily be appreciated from the comfort of a train car is the Canadian Rockies . The top-of-the-line option would be to book a seat aboard the Rocky Mountaineer , which offers luxury rail journeys featuring gourmet meals, plush berths, and glass-domed carriages for unobstructed views of western Canada’s imposing peaks and glacier-fed lakes so perfectly turquoise you’d swear they’d been Photoshopped. Prices for the ride are sometimes as steep as the Rockies, but you can piece together a more affordable alternative by booking your own tickets on  Via Rail , Canada’s answer to Amtrak. Routes from Alberta to British Columbia link national parks, wildlife preserves, ski runs, and hiking trails in Jasper , Kamloops , and other mountain beauties. Pictured: Moraine Lake at Banff National Park in Alberta

Golden Buddha statues at a temple in Bangkok

GOOD FOR : budget, relaxation, food, new experiences

“Cost is a top barrier to travel for those 60 and over,” the AARP’s Gillen told us—and come to think of it, cost is a big barrier for those under 60 as well. She recommends weekend road trips for budget travelers looking for domestic destinations. To find bargains overseas, it pays to go where you can benefit from a favorable exchange rate. The U.S. dollar stretches a long way in Southeast Asia right now, making upscale restaurants, spas, and four-star hotels sometimes remarkably affordable. With its beaches, Buddhist temples, floating markets, and the nonstop excitement of Bangkok , Thailand is an enticing choice for seniors who crave variety, culture, and a little relaxation, but would like to avoid completely scrambling that nest egg. Residents' traditional respect for elders is an added bonus.

Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, Florida

GOOD FOR : warm climate, history, getting around

America’s oldest continuously occupied European settlement is a must for history buffs, who can explore what remains of more than two centuries of Spanish rule, starting in 1565. A compact, magnolia-lined historic district—four blocks of St. George Street , from King Street to the Old City Gate, constitute the heart of it—make the sights easy to see for those who can’t walk far. And convenient hop-on, hop-off sightseeing trolleys (often with discounts for seniors) make it even easier. Good places to hop off include the well-preserved 17th-century Castillo de San Marcos masonry fortification, the Victorian curio-stuffed Lightner Museum   (pictured), and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park . (Hey, it can’t hurt.)

Elephants at Kruger National Park in South Africa

GOOD FOR : bucket lists, photography, group tours

We’d wager that “African safari” appears on more bucket lists than any other type of vacation—and with good reason. Who doesn’t want to lay eyes on lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras on their home turf? The good news for older travelers with reduced physical abilities is that wildlife-viewing tours are undertaken in all-terrain vehicles rather than on foot (that’s also good news for travelers who’d rather not become brunch fare for tigers). The ride can get bumpy, though, so for the sake of your joints you might want to pick a game preserve that has a well-oiled tourism infrastructure to accommodate a wide range of visitors. That makes South Africa’s Kruger National Park an obvious choice. And after you’ve spotted the Big 5 (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and Cape buffaloes), you can use the dollar-friendly exchange rate toward adventures in other parts of South Africa. Take your pick among vineyard tours, beach getaways, and the tram ride up Table Mountain in Cape Town . Your once-in-a-lifetime trip could turn into the first in a string of repeat visits.

Road Trip in Portugal — from Lisbon to the Algarve

senior trip ideas out of country

For the perfect dose of vibrant city life, history, and stunning coastal scenery, Portugal is a no-brainer. By flying into Lisbon, you’ll give yourself a few days to explore the cafes, restaurants, and inimitable Lisbon scenery (as well as plenty of time to sample delicious sweets like pasteis de nata). Just note that Lisbon is full of street and cobblestone sidewalks, so you’ll need to be steady on your feet to make the most of it.

Once you’ve had your city fill, rent a car and head three hours south to the Algarve . Here, a collection of coastal towns stretches from west to east. Start in Sagres, where little development and dramatic coastal cliffs are the perfect retirement reward. Making your way east, allow for a few days in charming Lagos before continuing on to other quaint towns like Taveira.

Safari in the Masai Mara, Kenya

Elephants in Masai Mara, Kenya

Retirees with a healthy sense of adventure will be handsomely rewarded with a trip to Kenya to experience the great migration across the Masai Mara. You’ve likely seen photographs of the dramatic crossings of wildebeest and other hoofed animals as thousands of them make their way across the crocodile-infested Mara River. And that’s only a fraction of the majestic natural spectacle.

There are plenty of ways to experience a Kenyan safari, from budget overland Jeeps to fly-in luxury tented camps. No options are cheap, but for an up-close-and-personal encounter with the big five and other species, it’s worth the investment. You’ll like have to take your pick between parks and national reserves like Aberdare, Masai Mara, Tsavo, and Amboseli — or a combination of several. If you’re after a truly exclusive experience, you’ll want to check out the private conservancies, like the Mara North Conservancy, which offers all night game rides and limits the amount of other safaris within their boundaries at a given time.

First time on safari? Here are 11 top tips for planning an African safari .

Drive the Pacific Coast Highway

senior trip ideas out of country

You don’t need to leave the United States to have an amazing bucket-list trip after you’ve retired. In fact, the U.S. is blessed with its own share of amazing cities and beautiful landscapes. For an easy-to-plan and easy-to-execute journey, hop in a car and drive (nearly) the entire coast of California .

Also known as California 1, the Pacific Coast Highway runs for over 650 miles — from Dana Point north to Leggett. While those names might not be familiar, the cities and towns in between include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Monterey, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara. And while exploring those cities is certainly part of the fun of this epic road trip, it’s the natural scenery that’s especially spectacular.

Beaches, mountains, vineyards, cliffs, forests, fog banks, and epic sunsets are all on the menu along the Pacific Coast Highway. Definitely make time for some day hikes in the many state parks and forests along the way. If you’re feeling ambitious, take a turn inland and hit up the Sonoma Wine Region to the north of San Francisco. Or opt to start your journey in San Diego and head all the way north in California to the wilderness of Redwood National Park.

Don’t miss a thing. Here are 11 stops to make along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Japan During Cherry Blossom Season

Odaiba, Tokyo tree blossoms

To distill all of the reasons that Japan is a travelers’ dream down to one thing would be hard. There’s the dazzling cities, incredibly food, efficient transportation, quirky boutiques, and gorgeous landscapes across this nation. However, if you’re after a truly special only-in-Japan experience, you’ll need to visit during cherry blossom season (called sakura in Japan).

To put it mildly: Japan goes nuts for cherry blossoms. The parks of Tokyo fill up — literally — with merrymakers having boozy brunches on blankets. All around people snap photos of themselves with an astonishing array of cherry tree varieties. But it’s not just Tokyo. Cities and towns and national parks across the land draw crowds with the spectacle as spring dawns from south to north across Japan.

That makes Japan a no-brainer for retired travelers looking to explore a good cross-section of Japan. Trains run fast and efficiently, and connect almost every corner of the country, making navigating Japan relatively easy. And while English isn’t spoken as widely as you might expect, everyone involved with the tourist industry will be able to get you to where you need to be easily. Don’t miss a hot soak in the world famous onsen .

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown on the best time to visit Japan.

Florence and Tuscany’s Wine Regions

senior trip ideas out of country

While you can make a tour of Italy a dreamy bucket-list trip in its own right, there’s something special about devoting a nice chunk of time to exploring one of Italy’s most iconic regions: Tuscany. Florence is the nerve center and is famous for its art, architecture, and food. You’ll find major Renaissance landmarks like the Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Galleria dell’Accademia here. Michelangelo’s “David” can be found at the latter.

Outside of Florence (and equally historic Siena), Tuscany is famous for its wine and truffles — all found in the beautiful rolling hills and forests of the region. Some of the most famous wines in the world bear names of Tuscan towns, including Chianti, Montalcino, and Montepulciano. But trust us when we say that there are almost too many charming towns and villages to explore. You’d also do well to bed down in one of the many agritourism properties, like Aia Mattonata Relais .

Utah’s National Parks and the Grand Canyon

The View Hotel

While the United States has some of the most beautiful national parks in the world, some parks are more accessible for seniors than others. There are also few places in the U.S. where you’ll find so many stunning natural parks packed into a relatively small region as you will in Utah and Northern Arizona. Whether you’re looking to explore vertigo-inducing hikes like the notoriously dangerous Angel’s Landing, take a multi-day trek into the desert landscapes, or simply enjoy some easy sight-seeing on short, simple walks, there’s plenty here to in Utah.

The major parks in Utah — Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion — all offer a range of trails and experiences for visitors. You’ll also find that Zion and the Grand Canyon in particular are well suited to travelers who have any mobility issues. Zion offers a tram through the center of its majestic valley with clear views of the major summits and cliffs all around. Along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the four main viewpoints (Yaki, Moran, Grandview, and Desert View) are all accessible. While Bryce Canyon is the least accessible of the major parks, though Sunrise Point and Sunset Point can easily be reached for some spectacular views.

Explore Ireland by Rail and Road

senior trip ideas out of country

Talk to anyone who has been to Ireland and chances are you’ll hear something close to rapture. Ireland is one of those destinations that absolutely lives up to the hype. And with over 33 million Americans claiming some level of Irish ancestry, it’s remained a favorite for travelers young and old seeking to find the roots of their family trees.

Whether you’re visiting Ireland because you’re researching ancestry or because you want to experience the mix of quaint towns, cool cities, and jaw-dropping emerald green landscapes, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a fast and easy train ride from buzzing Dublin’s historic sites to Galway’s funky foodie scene and artsy vibe. From there, you only need to grab a car rental to explore other amazing towns like Killarney (next to the stunning Killarney National Park), the stunning Cliffs of Moher (in County Clare), and the scenic Ring of Kerry. Just remember, you’ll drive on the left-hand side (a bucket-list experience in our opinion).

All around Ireland, you’re likely to stumble upon castles and abbeys, unexpected coastal vistas, and towns that are postcard-perfect. And while Irish is certainly still spoken — and you’ll hear signs in the language — English is officially used everywhere. That, combined with a well-oiled tourism industry — helps make navigating this country safe and easy for retirees and everyone else.

Eastern Australia

Bondi Beach

Spotting a kangaroo; snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef; a tour of the Outback; seeing the Sydney Opera House; trying Vegemite — everyone has a reason for wanting to visit Australia (well, the last one might be a stretch). Even better? Australia makes an excellent destination for retirees for three reasons: it’s safe, it’s traveler friendly, and getting around is easy (but much like Ireland, you’ll be driving on the left-hand side of the road).

As one of the most urbanized nations on the planet, Australia’s cities are big, but by no means chaotic. Sydney is home to world-famous landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, and has some of the coolest neighborhoods and best urban beaches in the world. Melbourne is the artsier alternative to Sydney, with charming boutique and cafes in spades and easy access to five different wine regions.

For a nature-made respite from all of the city style, Eastern Australia is flush with beautiful natural scenery. That ranges from rugged mountains in the southern interior to rolling hills near the coasts to stunning beaches to the tropical north of Queensland. Towns like Cairns and Townsville are a jumping-off point for catamaran trips across the Great Barrier Reef. Though if you want to unwind amid some of the most stunning island scenery in the world, we recommend a trip to the resorts of the Whitsunday Islands.

Tour India’s Golden Triangle by Train

senior trip ideas out of country

No one would describe a trip to India as a simple, easy thing. The moment you leave the modern airport in Delhi, it’s clear that you are very far from anything you’re used to — and that’s precisely the point. You’ve worked hard and played by the rules your entire life, and your golden years are the perfect time to explore something a little outside of your comfort zone: India’s Golden Triangle. With plenty of time to check off this bucket list trip, you’re also free to explore at your own pace, which is helpful in India.

So what is the Golden Triangle? It’s one of the most popular tourist circuits in India, connecting three major destinations by rail in the rough approximation of a triangle. It also happens to combine some of India’s most famous monuments and destinations in one itinerary, making it incredibly popular and relatively easy to plan. You’d do well to work with a private tour company if you’d like to guarantee your comfort and make securing train tickets easy. It can help take out some of the unavoidable stress you’re likely to feel once you’ve set foot on the ground in India.

The Golden Triangle starts in Delhi, where you’ll find old and new India side by side in startling contrasts. There are the frenetic markets and Mughal-era landmarks of Old Delhi, beautiful qawwali ceremonies at Hazrat Nizamuddin, and the ruins of Qutub Minar all harkening back in time while luxury malls pepper the wealthy districts and hip cafes pack charming Hauz Khas Village. From there, a fast train to Agra puts you at the foot of the iconic Taj Mahal — one of the most famous monuments in the world. Once you’ve had your fill, it’s off to the Pink City of Jaipur in Rajasthan to soak of its charms.

Here’s how to get an India visa online — it can be complicated.

Live on Island Time in Hawaii

Waikiki Beach at sunset

For many travelers, Hawaii is the kind of place you dream about. Jungle-clad volcanos, stunning beaches, dramatic seaside cliffs, luxury hotels, perfect weather, and amazing local food all put it high on the list of most people. However, long flights from much of the world mean that this is the kind of place best experienced when you have plenty of time.

Depending on your personality, Hawaii has plenty of sides to enjoy. History buffs and beach lovers will do well to stick to Oahu , where Honolulu and the famous Waikiki neighborhood sit right along one of the most famous beaches in the world. If you’re after untouched natural beauty, we suggest heading to Maui or Kauai, where development has been kept to a relative minimum. If you’re looking for an up-close-and-personal volcano experience, Hawaii Volcanos National Park is found right on the Big Island.

Since you’re retired, though, you can live on island time. By giving yourself 14 days or more, you have plenty of time to explore several of the islands at a leisurely pace. And when you’re not island-hopping or soaking up the sun on the beach, you’ll find restaurants of all types catering to everyone’s taste buds, which is always a comfort when you’re far from home.

Still not sure where to visit in Hawaii? Here’s a cheat sheet to all the Hawaiian islands .

15 Trips You Need to Take as Soon as You Retire

senior trip ideas out of country

No more waiting for your annual vacation, then filling it end-to-end until you drag yourself back to work needing another week off. You are retired — and if you're reading this, you probably love to travel. With the youngest baby boomers turning 59 this year, and the first group around age 77, most members of that influential cohort are likely retired or semi-retired. According to AARP's 2022 Travel Trends survey , the majority of travelers over age 50 (67 percent) planned to travel in 2022, taking at least four trips throughout the year. And since 2023 has brought record-breaking travel numbers , it's likely that even more boomers are hitting the road this year.

The AARP survey also indicated that, despite lingering worry about the spread of COVID-19, 77 percent of travelers do feel it's safe enough to vacation. And while older travelers were more likely to plan a domestic trip last year, about 43 percent of people ages 50 and up planned to travel both within the U.S. and abroad.

If you're among the retirees ready to get away, your options are vast and varied. With your job in the rearview mirror, and the open highway ahead, how about a road trip? This might appeal if you've been longing for the freedom of getting behind the wheel and taking off. Or, perhaps you escaped employment with barely enough energy to pick up your last check and bid goodbye to envious coworkers. A resort destination will let you recover without lifting a finger. (Well, except waving one to summon your next poolside cocktail.) Or, are you looking for a trip to the other side of the world? No problem.

Once you realize you have the time, energy, and travel budget, the next step is to get planning. Whether you want rest or excitement, solitude or crowds, low cost or luxury, here are some ideas for retirement travel.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Billed as "America's Favorite Drive," this spectacular 469-mile route joins Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Take as much or as little time as you want on this scenic ride, which averages between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation. Delight in the extraordinary views from roadside pullover areas, or hike a few of the 80-plus trails. From campgrounds to upscale log homes, plenty of lodging is available, and you can enjoy traditional music, culture, biking, history, nature, and even golf along the way.

In Asheville, North Carolina, explore the majestic Biltmore Estate , created in 1895 by George Vanderbilt. Self-guided tours take guests through the 250-room house and garden, described as a "time travel experience." You can spend the night at the Estate's hotel, called The Inn, or in your own cottage. All the information you need to plan your excursion can be found on the Blue Ridge Parkway website , plus they offer a smartphone app that includes scenic and historic sites, lodging, and activities to guide you along the way.

Rocky Mountaineer

Want to leave the driving to someone else? A luxurious journey through the Canadian Rockies aboard one of Rocky Mountaineer's comfortable, glass-domed railway cars might be your ticket. Choose from several options, like the Grand Adventure Circle Journey . This 11-night trip includes five days aboard the Rocky Mountaineer and overnight stays in Whistler, Jasper, Lake Louise, and more.

The journey begins in Vancouver with time to explore and rest. The next morning, you'll board the Rocky Mountaineer and travel British Columbia's Sea-to-Sky Corridor on your way to the resort town of Whistler. Up next: Wind your way through farmland and stunning canyons en route to Quesnel, then to Jasper National Park for a day of leisure. Then, to get to Lake Louise, you'll travel via the scenic Icefields Parkway , where you can ride an Ice Explorer to the middle of Athabasca Glacier. Upon arriving at Lake Louise, you'll have time to explore before heading to Banff and back to Vancouver via Kamloops. More Rocky Mountaineer itinerary options are listed online .

Chris Marrinaccio/Travel + Leisure

With a flight time between 16 and 21 hours from the U.S. and a huge area to see, a visit to Australia, Travel + Leisure 's 2020 Destination of the Year , doesn't fit most vacation schedules – until you have no schedule, that is.

In metropolitan Sydney , tour the iconic Opera House and then see it from another perspective on a harbor cruise. Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or climb to the apex of its steel arch if you have lots of energy and an extra $350. Get up close and personal with Australia's unique wildlife on Kangaroo Island's nature reserve and see koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, fur seals, penguins, and kookaburras.

For marine wildlife, the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia is home to countless species of colorful fish, mollusks, starfish, turtles, dolphins, and sharks. Melbourne 's Great Ocean Road, at Australia's southeastern tip, is the place to see rugged seashore, jagged cliffs, sandy beaches, and even the dense Otway rainforest. Don't miss Brisbane, Queensland's capital, set along its picturesque river and crossed by the Story Bridge.

Cruise the Yarra River in Melbourne for great views of the city's landmarks and skyline. Seasons are opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, of course, so most travelers to the southern part of Australia time their visit during their summer, from November through March.

Southeast Asia River Cruise

If this part of the world is new to you, a river cruise will offer adventure, luxury, and convenience, with all the arrangements made for you. Several companies, including AmaWaterways , offer Mekong River cruises that stop in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. The seven-day cruise in southern Vietnam and Cambodia can be extended to include Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Halong Bay, and Angkor Wat in Siem Riep.

With an extension, you'll spend a few days in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital city, and enjoy a blend of ancient temples and modern skyscrapers. An excursion to Halong Bay follows, where you'll board a ship to sail among the magnificent limestone rock formations and spend the night in modern comfort.

Next, you'll take a short flight south to Siem Reap in Cambodia for a visit to Angkor Wat , a massive temple complex built in the early 12th century to honor the Hindu god, Vishnu. After exploring Angkor Wat, board your river ship for the seven-day Mekong River cruise.

So far away and with such a huge expanse of land (and several major cities) to explore, China may have been a destination you waited to visit. And now, you have the time.

Start your trip in Hong Kong, where you'll find great shopping, delicious dining, and stunning views of the skyline and harbor from the top of Victoria Peak. Ride the Star Ferry to Kowloon to see more of the iconic harbor.

Then, fly to Beijing, China's imperial capital, where you can view historic Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the world's largest surviving ancient palace complex. Walk along a portion of the 4,000-mile-long Great Wall , enjoying the panoramic views and contemplating its role in China's long history. Take a short flight to Xi'an to see the wondrous Terracotta Army , more than 7,000 life-sized clay sculptures of warriors and horses buried with Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Your next stop might be Shanghai , China's largest city and financial center, where you can stroll along the Bund, its famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Be sure to sample the specialty xiao long bao (soup dumplings) at a few of the restaurants that claim theirs to be the best. You can be the judge.

If you're fascinated by the ancient civilization of Egypt and have always wanted to see the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Nile , this could be the time to make your plans. The Grand Egyptian Museum is set to in early 2024, with more than 100,000 artifacts and about 20,000 on display, including 5,400 objects retrieved from Tutankhamun's tomb.

Even if you usually travel on your own, you may want to consider a well-planned group excursion that takes care of the transfers, entry tickets, meals, tours, and other arrangements. For example, Adventures by Disney offers 10-day trips to Egypt that make planning simple. The itinerary includes a trip to the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx, snorkeling in the Red Sea via private yacht, and a three-night cruise on the Nile. A papyrus-making demonstration and a hieroglyphics workshop is also part of the experience.

Scottsdale, Arizona

Jackson Vance/Travel + Leisure

If your goal is to be spoiled and rejuvenated in luxurious surroundings, Scottsdale has many options for you. The Andaz offers suites and bungalows, and for even more privacy, the retreat's secluded cluster of bungalows has its own swimming pool. Hotel Valley Ho , faithfully restored with contemporary comforts and mid-century modern style, greets guests with classic furnishings that will take you back to the 1950s.

Scottsdale is about 20 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, so you can start relaxing as soon as you land. When you're sufficiently restored and ready to see the city, you'll find walkable Old Town 's art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and craft breweries to be convenient and fun. Be on the lookout for One-Eyed Jack, a huge stylized jackrabbit — just one example of Scottsdale's commitment to public art.

The Museum of the West features an extraordinary collection of paintings, sculpture, artifacts, ceramics, photography, and drawings. Meanwhile, the fascinating Museum of Contemporary Art offers a variety of installations, paintings, photography, and videos. Visitors to Scottsdale should be sure to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West , his winter home and architecture school. Tours reveal not only the home, furnishings, and structures, but also much about Wright's life and personality.

Iceland and the Northern Lights

What travel wish list doesn't include seeing the aurora borealis? The challenge with getting a good look at the mysterious northern lights is that they don't appear on schedule. Certain times of year (September through March) are better for viewing with the long winter nights. Travelers also need to avoid nights with a bright moon. Now that you have time to wait patiently for the spectacular show in the sky, why not plan a trip to Iceland?

While you're there, don't miss the Blue Lagoon . Book a day visit or stay in one of the hotels , like the Silica Hotel or the five-star luxury Retreat Hotel. The 102-degree milky blue water is said to be excellent for the skin, and its scenery and unique waters make it Iceland's most-visited attraction. You might even be lucky enough to see the northern lights as you luxuriate in the warm water of the lagoon.

Hotel Ranga , a family-owned boutique that celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, is a popular place to stay while you wait for the northern lights to appear. Their on-site observatory, outdoor hot tubs, aurora alert service, cozy rooms, gourmet meals, and hospitality make the anticipation relaxing and enjoyable.

Looking for lush green scenery, inviting pubs, and friendly folks? Want to learn more about your ancestors or discover the towns they once called home? A trip to Ireland will fit the bill.

Start in Dublin, where you can visit Trinity College to admire the architecture and ancient manuscripts, prison-turned-museum Kilmainham Gaol to hear about Ireland's history, and the Guinness Storehouse to pour a proper pint and enjoy a 360-degree view of the city. Join a pub crawl and hear traditional Irish music while checking out the lively bar scene.

Other lovely cities worth exploring in the country include Kinsale, Belfast, Dingle, Killarney, and Kilkenny. Drive the 110-mile Ring of Kerry along the Iveragh Peninsula for breathtaking views, historical sites, waterfalls, beaches, and monuments. Stay in a castle like Adare Manor , Dromoland Castle , or Carton House .

The seaport town of Cobh in County Cork was the departure point of the Titanic, and a tour of the White Star Line ticket office is a moving and memorable experience. If you plan to drive, remember that you'll be on the left side of the road, and vehicles have right-hand drive — a bit confusing, especially with a standard shift car. Opt for an automatic vehicle or a driver for comfortable, safer touring.

This island just off Italy's toe is another exciting locale for those seeking ancestral towns. Plus, you can explore it while sniffing out the perfect cannoli or pasta alla Norma. Many Italian-Americans trace their roots to Sicily as a result of migrations that occurred in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Palermo, Sicily's capital, is a lively city with colorful outdoor markets, spectacular cathedrals, and delectable street food, including fried rice balls called arancini . Enjoy them with Sicilian wines, many from vineyards near Mount Etna, Sicily's active volcano.

Unique and inviting cities along the coastline and in Sicily's interior offer something for everyone, including ancient ruins at Agrigento, Siracusa, Selinunte, and Taormina — testament to the history of this island, which has been occupied at various times by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and others.

Miles of gorgeous coastline and beaches, impressive architecture, fresh seafood, and friendly people are just a few reasons to visit Sicily. Travel between cities can be managed by train, bus, car, or private driver. If you rent a car, note that main highways are generally in good condition and well-marked, unlike some local roads. Highway speeds are fast, and Sicilian drivers seem to love tailgating. Within the cities, streets are narrow, and parking is nearly nonexistent. You can usually find public parking on the edge of towns in a parcheggio .

Lovers of history, religion, and current events will enjoy touring this tiny country, which is about the size of New Jersey. Tourism is increasing, and with the influx of visitors, the Israel Nature and Parks Authority has created Israel Pass , which provides discounts and easier access to national parks, nature reserves, and famous attractions.

Your first stop should be Tel Aviv, known for its beaches, clubs, and thriving arts community. Stay in The Norman , a conveniently located boutique hotel that's housed in a luxuriously restored historic building. Be sure to visit the Carmel Market — Tel Aviv's most popular — for unique textiles, spices, herbs, tea, and fresh foods.

Less than an hour's drive north is Caesarea, a coastal town offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean along with Roman ruins dating back to its days as the area's largest port. Jerusalem, a sacred city for Christians, Jews, and Muslims, must be on your itinerary. See the iconic Dome of the Rock shrine, Jerusalem's most recognizable landmark and an example of Islamic architecture. Visit the site of the crucifixion, the Temple Mount, and the Western Wall.

The magnificent King David Hotel would be a treat, even if only for dinner or a cocktail and a glimpse of its stunning view of Old Jerusalem. A range of tour groups and prices make visiting Israel convenient as well as memorable. Pro tip: Consider concierge service to expedite your transfer from Ben Gurion Airport.

United States Coast-to-Coast Road Trip

"See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet!" You might have heard the song, and it remains good advice for travelers with lots of time.

There are so many sights to see and so many ways to drive across America. Of course, you can take Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles . For nostalgia, small towns, kitschy landmarks, and a view of the Grand Canyon, this is the way to go. Start or end your journey on the Santa Monica Pier, the western end of the fabled road. Be sure to take a photo at the "Santa Monica 66 - End of the Trail" sign.

Or, try the southern route linking San Diego , California, and Savannah , Georgia. You'll pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Cutting across the middle on Route 50, which links Maryland and northern California, you'll see the Sierra Nevada, Appalachian, and Rocky Mountains, deserts, plains, and farmland. Washington, D.C. , the world's tallest arch in St. Louis, and Lake Tahoe are other highlights on this route.

So, grab a map and a traveling companion and plan your cross-country trip. Renting a vehicle one-way and flying back could be just the ticket.

At over 663,000 square miles, Alaska is America's largest state and arguably the most gorgeous. Before you panic, thinking, "how can I see it all in one trip," you'll want to temper your expectations. Unless you're planning to stay for months, you won't be seeing it all, and even then, you'll only scratch the surface of Alaska's vast wilderness.

Book a guided tour or cruise and start your journey in a big city like Anchorage or Juneau. You can do a little sightseeing and visit their best museums and galleries before setting off to see Alaska's natural attractions .

Worried you won't be able to keep up with an active itinerary? Don't! There are many ways to enjoy the spectacular Alaskan scenery without having to be overly adventurous. In fact, Alaska is a perfect vacation destination for senior citizens of all ages and abilities.

Elephants in Addo National Park, South Africa

It's no secret that heading out on an African safari is a bucket list vacation . In addition to spectacular scenery, tourists can rest assured they'll return home with phenomenal photos of some, if not all, of the region's "big five" (lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos).

Worried a trip of this kind will be too much for you at this stage of life? Don't! Joining a safari is one of the best things to do for senior citizens in South Africa. These memorable tours are mainly conducted in a 4X4 vehicle, which means there's little to no walking involved; a plus for those with mobility concerns.

Kruger National Park is one of the best game reserves in Africa . The largest and oldest national park in South Africa, this famed reserve is the main stop on many senior vacation packages. Many accessible luxury safari lodges lie outside the borders of the park, offering guests a relaxing and comfortable spot to rest between excursions.

While here, be sure to visit South Africa's other top attractions , like Lion's Head in Cape Town , Table Mountain , and the vast and impressive Kgalagadi (Kalahari) Transfrontier Park .

Couple with snorkeling gear on a beach in the Caribbean

There's little that's as relaxing as lounging on a beautiful beach in the Caribbean . A few hours spent gazing at crystalline turquoise water while digging your toes in soft golden sand is enough to cure what ails you. Add the healing qualities of a warm swim on your joints and you'll never want to leave this tropical paradise.

Boasting thousands of islands, all as stunning as the next, the Caribbean is filled with glamorous places to visit , perfect for a senior vacation. If you're hoping for a spectacular senior trip, we'd suggest visiting the Caribbean's most popular islands.

Aruba , Antigua , Barbados , Bermuda , Curaçao , Grand Cayman , St . Lucia , St . Maarten , and St . Thomas are primed for welcoming senior vacationers, and they boast plenty of activities and amenities ideal for those who are enjoying life in their prime years.

Whether you choose to snorkel the coral reefs, hike through the tropical forest, take in the tourist sites and attractions in Bermuda , or enjoy water served in a fresh coconut on the beach, you'll find something fun to do on your Caribbean holiday.

Before you book, consider choosing a luxury all-inclusive Caribbean resort. In addition to plush accommodations, your stay will include meals, beverages, and activities, which means there's no stress to worry about when the final bill arrives.

You'll also want to consider the time of year you want to travel. The best time to visit the Caribbean for weather is between December and April . If you're looking for a deal, the cheapest time to go to the Caribbean is during its low season , from May through August .

Outdoor dining in Lucca, Tuscany

It's hard to find a more romantic destination than Tuscany. Ancient architecture, cobblestone streets, winding laneways, and some of the world's best restaurants lie within the borders of this elysian region. Be sure to come hungry, because your taste buds are in for a treat at every meal.

Tourists can spend their days exploring Tuscany's top attractions , like the Leaning Tower in Pisa , Siena's Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , or Lucca's stone walls , and there are enough museums to keep visitors busy for days.

When you're not sightseeing, eat! It's one of the best things to do in Florence .

Florence is Tuscany's renowned capital, most famous for its seemingly endless attractions, like the Uffizi Gallery , Palazzo Vecchio , and Neptune Fountain , which lie in the splendid Piazza della Signoria . The Ponte Vecchio Bridge and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its impressive Duomo are points of interest you won't want to miss.

No need to worry about getting lost. There are plenty of senior tours and senior vacation packages designed for retirees who don't want to futz around with maps and taxis. Their cheerful guides will lead you around the city, pointing out the most interesting tourist sites.

Tuscany is also well known for its beautiful accommodations. In addition to some very impressive hotels in Florence (we see you, Four Seasons Hotel Firenze ), this resplendent region is home to a slew of luxe resorts, charming villas, and plush hotels.

Train passing through the Bow Valley in the Canadian Rockies

No matter which way you see them–by car, bus, plane, train, or foot–the Canadian Rockies are breathtaking. Stretching through two of Canada's provinces, British Columbia and Alberta, these magnificent peaks surround deep, sparkling lakes, thick forests, jagged bluffs, and vast plains. Don't worry if your heart rate increases and your breathing stops when you set eyes on them, that's a normal reaction.

For retirees, the best way to see the Rockies is by train. And the plushest way to travel is by the Rocky Mountaineer . Yes, the price is about as steep as the mountains themselves, but you'll be riding in luxury, pampered by not only the unsurpassable view that rushes past your window, but also by the top-notch service and comfy seats offered on board. Nights are spent in hotels, and you'll exit the train to take advantage of fun tours and guided visits to local tourist attractions.

Depending on which journey you choose, you could be chugga-chugga-choo-chooing your way through one of Canada's best national parks . Jasper National Park zips past the lakes in the Shuswap region just past Kamloops , or you can whiz your way to Banff National Park . Most tours start in Vancouver and end in Banff or vice versa.

Not up for parting with that much cash? Try creating your own journey with a combination of trips on Via Rail and a rental car. Or, book a senior vacation package so you can let someone else do the planning.

If you're feeling adventurous and want to travel in winter, book a room at one of Canada's best ski resorts . The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise resort is set in the center of the Rockies, making it an ideal destination for senior travelers looking to relax in luxury after a day spent on the slopes.

Yosemite valley

Sometimes, it's nice not to have to worry about a passport while you're on vacation. If you live in the U.S., why not roam near home and visit one of America's best national parks ? It will help keep your budget in check and allow you to explore parts of your country that you've yet to visit.

There are so many fabulous National Parks to choose from that we can't list them all. So, below are a few of our favorite spots for a senior vacation. Depending on where you live or intend to travel, you won't be at a loss for beauty. Whether you want to go hiking, birding, biking, or rafting, you'll find a park to meet your needs.

Grand Canyon National Park

Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park is unmissable and filled with enough hiking trails to keep senior citizens happily occupied for hours or even days. Park your car and ride the park's shuttle from lookout to lookout. One of the best-known national parks and a top natural wonder of the world , you'll want to set aside at least a full day to enjoy this popular destination.

Those who'd prefer to save their legs for hiking in other destinations can hop on the Grand Canyon Railway Adventure Tour , where they can hear folklore and other historic tales from animated staff. The train departs from Williams but you can find connections from Flagstaff or Sedona .

At Grand Canyon Depot , guests can choose to hop on a narrated coach tour of the park. Included is a Wild West shootout show and live western music to transport you back in time.

Yosemite National Park

The best time to visit Yosemite National Park in California is between Memorial Day and Labor Day . You'll encounter a ton of other tourists at this time, but the weather will be ideal for exploring the park's most iconic attractions , like El Capitan , Half Dome , and Yosemite Falls .

The many hiking trails at Yosemite vary in difficulty, with many easy-to-moderate routes that are perfect for senior travelers. Stay at one of Yosemite's best campgrounds if you're up for camping.

Acadia National Park

Head to Acadia National Park for a rugged and beautiful senior vacation. Packed with fun and accessible hikes and other exciting things to do , this is one of the best tourist attractions in Maine for good reason. Senior citizens will love the Island Explorer buses, which connect tourists with the park's many attractions. Park Loop Road is the most scenic of the park's passages.

While you're there, be sure to schedule time to explore nearby Bar Harbor . Found on Maine's Mount Desert Island , this adorable town is a perfect mix of historic homes and a bustling metropolis come summer.

River cruise boat on the Danube in Budapest

It's easy to see why taking a European river cruise is a popular senior trip idea. These picturesque cruises are a slow, calm, and easy way to see what is often the city's best side. Coastal castles, waterfronts peppered with colorful buildings, and bustling harbors can all be appreciated from the comfort of the deck.

If you want to be more adventurous, that's easy, too. Hop off the boat and involve yourself in some of the local activities, walk around the various cities or villages, and go sightseeing with the ship's organized tours. If you'd rather stay put and enjoy the boat's amenities, that's fine, too.

Unlike giant cruise boats, the vessels used for river cruises are smaller and more manageable. They often hold about 200 people or less. The staterooms are often just as nice as those found on larger ships, and offer balconies or floor-to-ceiling windows. The ships feature restaurants, indoor and outdoor lounge areas, and some come equipped with a pool.

Senior tourists can choose three- to four-day journeys to test the waters (get it?) or opt for a longer, grander tour that lasts as long as 15 days.

Depending which company and route you choose, you could travel along the Rhine from Amsterdam until you hit the Main River in Miltenberg , and mosey along the Danube through Vienna to Budapest.

A trip along the Duouro to explore Portugal is another must for European wanderers.

The adult-only Viking River Cruises is one of the best companies for senior vacations in Europe and beyond.

Bixby Bridge on the Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur

There's nothing like a road trip to make you appreciate being retired. You can drive as quickly or as slowly as you'd like (within the speed limits, of course), stop where and when you want, and spend the night in luxe California resorts or quaint B&Bs along the route. The world, or in this case the road, is your proverbial oyster!

When that road trip is on the streets of California , you're in for a vacation you won't forget. Driving the Pacific Coast Highway (also known as California State Road 1) is one of the best West Coast road trips due to its jaw-droppingly gorgeous scenery. Mountains meet the sea on this incredible road, and you'll be more than happy you took the time to drive it.

You'll want to plan on a minimum of six days if you're hoping to drive from San Francisco to San Diego , an almost 600-mile trek. While the total drive will take anywhere from 11 to 12 hours, it's the amazing stops and scenic overlooks that will add days to your journey.

Before you rev your engine, make time to do some sightseeing in San Francisco . You can't miss the Golden Gate Bridge , but other stellar attractions like Alcatraz Island and Fisherman's Wharf deserve attention, too.

Popular stops along the route include Big Sur's top attraction , Bixby Bridge , the beaches of Santa Barbara , Monterey's top points of interest , and the tourist hot spots of Los Angeles .

San Diego is a great place to enjoy some well-deserved down time at one of the city's pristine beaches before settling in at a comfy hotel.

If you're not comfortable driving, book a tour. The Monterey, Carmel and 17-mile drive is a full-day tour from San Francisco that shows travelers the sights of Monterey and Carmel by the Sea while leaving the driving to a professional.

Airboat ride in the Florida Everglades

It's no surprise that Florida is a haven for senior citizens. Known as the Sunshine State, its ideal temperature is the number-one reason retirees flock here when winter hits at home. Who wants to shovel snow when they could lounge on one of the soft, white-sand Florida beaches that make this state so irresistible?

Florida offers a large variety of fun places to visit, which means there really is something for everyone. From the bustling beach scene in Miami to the theme parks and attractions of Orlando to the funky vibe of Key West to the golf courses scattered throughout the state, you'll never be bored.

Another bonus of visiting this sunny state; Florida is an ideal place to visit for a skip-gen trip –the grandkids can join in the fun no matter where you choose to stay.

While you're there, be sure to book an airboat tour of the Everglades National Park . Skirting across the river grass at high speed on your way to spot gators, snakes, panthers, and wood storks is exhilarating. This is definitely one of the most thrilling things to do in Florida .

Forsyth Park, Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is dripping with appeal. Lined with giant oak trees whose moss-draped branches flow elegantly in the breeze, and highlighted by grand mansions that harken back to simpler times, this romantic small city oozes Southern charm.

Senior visitors to Savannah are presented with a slew of options when it comes to touring this pretty city. From dolphin cruises to private bus tours to trolley rides to personal golf cart cruisers , you can do as much or as little walking as you'd like to see Savannah's top attractions .

When you've finished visiting points of interest like the Savannah Historic District , Bonaventure Cemetery , and Forsyth Park , you can reward yourself with some of that down-home Southern cooking you've heard so much about. Then, soak up some history in a horse-drawn carriage, ogling the antebellum architecture that makes this wonderful city so unique.

Moose Head Ranch, a dude ranch inside Grand Teton National Park

There are so many fun things to do on a dude ranch that you won't need to leave the property. Popular destinations for multigenerational holidays, these senior-friendly destinations offer an ideal place to bring the whole family.

Dude ranches are chock full of activities for travelers of all ages and abilities. From petting zoos to cattle drives to white water rafting to horseback riding to bird ranching, you won't be at a loss for ways to stay entertained. Plus, you can finally unleash your inner cowboy or cowgirl.

Many dude ranches are found in the central U.S. States like Wyoming , Montana , and Colorado , but you'll also find a variety of top ranches in California .

The Vista Verde Guest Ranch in Colorado is both luxurious and idyllic. A working cattle ranch, guests stay in private log cabins and have access to activities like fly fishing, rock climbing and cooking lessons. No wonder it is deemed one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the U.S .

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is a hot spot for senior vacations due to its warm climate and picturesque scenery–the historic adobe buildings are unforgettable. Like Florida, Santa Fe is adept at catering to retirees. It boasts a bevy of attractions perfect for those who don't want to take things at too fast a pace.

The walkable Canyon Road plays host to more than 100 art galleries and studios, as well as crafts stores and multiple restaurants and cafés. It's eclectic, exciting, and easy to wander around.

The Museum of New Mexico Complex is home to four museums, so you can soak up the history in one easy locale. Told you the city was easy to get around.

Those who want to be more active can take advantage of Santa Fe's prime location as the highest state capital. Its position at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains make it an ideal spot for outdoor endeavors like hiking, biking, golfing, or skiing (if you visit during winter).

Couple on a trail at Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, Sedona

There's a lot to love in Sedona, Arizona, especially if you're traveling as a senior citizen. First, there's the scenery. Otherworldly red rock formations rise from the rugged terrain, changing color as the light dances upon them throughout the day. Second, there's the ideal climate–mild and wonderful.

Hiking is one of the best things to do in Sedona . Don't worry if you're not up for a hard-core hike, there are plenty of easy trails , including the 2.4-mile, partially shaded route that traverses Fay Canyon . More adventurous seniors can try out Sedona's mountain biking trails .

If you're itching to take photos of Cathedral Rock , rest assured that you can get great shots from Red Rock Crossing Park . You can climb to the saddle if you're willing and able, but there's no need if you're just hoping to gaze at its magnificence up close.

A drive along the Red Rock Scenic Byway is another great way to view the area's most stunning sites, including Bell Rock , without having to spend hours (or possibly days) hiking.

Practice some retail therapy and grab a bite to eat in Uptown Sedona . This is where you'll find the city's best galleries, shops, and restaurants. Golf is another popular activity for retirees, so pack clubs if you're hoping to play a game or two.

Machu Picchu

We bet if you close your eyes, you can picture Machu Picchu. As one of the most famous tourist attractions in Peru , Machu Picchu is one of the top World Heritage sites and one of the most recognizable places to visit in the world .

This magical Inca City features a dramatic setting that is impossible to forget. Set high above the Urubamba River, the famed ruins are surrounded by lush, mist-shrouded mountains and boast steep, terraced steps that climb the side of the mountain that are flanked by the remains of ancient buildings. It is impossible to view this spectacular site without gasping in awe and taking a gazillion photographs.

While some tourists choose to reach Machu Picchu by a days-long adventure involving a hike from Cusco and multiple campsites, the best way for retirees to enjoy the journey is by train . A bus can take travelers the rest of the way from the train station, so there's little hiking to endure compared to other routes.

If you're feeling adventurous but don't think a multi-day hike is your thing, there's also a one-day Inca Trail Hike , which takes about six hours, and takes you to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. Be sure to book a reservation in advance (as many as four months before your trip) to ensure you can gain entry to the site. You can do so on the Peruvian Ministry of Culture's website.

A word of warning: since tourists to Machu Picchu must travel through Cusco , which sits over 11,000 feet above sea level, seniors should first check with their doctor to be sure it is safe for them to visit at such a high altitude.

Benefits of Traveling for Seniors

Traveling provides numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits for seniors.

  • One of the primary advantages is staying active and maintaining overall health. Exploring new destinations encourages walking, sightseeing, and trying new activities, which contribute to improved cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength.

  • Consider the location: When choosing accommodations, consider the location and accessibility to local attractions. Look for hotels located in safe and walkable areas, close to public transportation, and with easy access to restaurants and shops.
  • Read reviews: Before booking accommodations, read reviews from other travelers to get an idea of the quality of the hotel and its amenities. Look for reviews from other seniors to better understand whether the hotel is age-friendly.
  • Book early: To ensure that you get the accommodations you need, it’s important to book early. This is especially important during peak travel seasons when hotels can fill up quickly.

Oh, I so disagree. Spread your wings and do something you’ve always wanted to do. Hike in Nepal, Go to an island in Thailand, walk the Great Wall. These things above are okay, but adventure is my middle name.

Different strokes for different folks! Thanks for adding additional ideas!

Retirement gives you the time to live your ideal lifestyle, and for many seniors, it’s the perfect time to get out and see the world. The only problem is this: traveling requires prep work. How can you get the most out of your vacation? Where do you start?

We’ve listed five of our favorite senior vacation ideas below with some of the best vacation spots for seniors with limited mobility. If you’re looking to explore the country, or simply want to travel but don’t know where to begin, use this list as a starting point to embrace your next adventure.

The Best Senior Vacation Ideas

Travel should be meaningful. It gives us a chance to explore our passions and spend time with our loved ones. When planning your next vacation, think about what vacation ideas excite or inspire you.

Are you interested in lying on a beach, a serene walk through a botanical garden, or have you always wanted to explore a certain museum? This list of senior vacation ideas can help you plan your next getaway.

A Day Trip: Perfect For Seniors With Limited Mobility

senior woman in blue classic car

For seniors with limited mobility, long vacations may seem daunting. A day trip could be the perfect quick getaway. Here’s a few quick tips on how you can plan the perfect day trip.

  • Research what’s around you. Certain cities are more suited to those with limited mobility. Do a little bit of research to find the most accommodating places and find lesser known attractions.
  • Pick a trip “theme.” Think about the “why,” your purpose for traveling. Maybe it’s finding the best creamery in your state or exploring local history museums. Whatever the theme, stick to one or two to avoid a watered down itinerary.
  • Keep it local. Small towns are full of hidden gems. Check out wine tasting events or live shows in local parks within a few hours of your location. There are plenty of resources to find local events, but start with checking out your town’s website homepage for an event calendar.

Senior Citizen Group Tours

a group of senior citizens touring a historic city

If you’re someone that loves to learn, consider a senior group tour. You’ll get to explore a new place and travel with like-minded people, allowing you to engage with people that share your passions. Plus taking part in shared, enriching experiences is a great way to make new life-long friends.

No matter what motivates you – whether it’s exploring unfamiliar surroundings or sharing meaningful experiences with friends and loved ones – there’s an ideal trip for you. Here’s a few resources to help you find your next tour:

  • Road Scholar is a travel site that offers educational tours specifically for older adults. Participants are typically over age 50 and you can search for tours by interest. The best part: you’re able to search for events designed for you to bring a family member or grandchild. With everything from broadway tours to exploring the history of trains with your grandchild, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest.
  • AARP offers a number of vacation packages for older adults. AARP can be especially helpful if you already have an idea of what you’d like to do for a vacation, and are looking for deals for seniors on hotel stays or travel expenses.
  • YMT Vacations is another travel company that caters specifically to older adults. With a focus on convenient, all-inclusive trips, YMT’s offerings include educational guided tours and cruises in the U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Asia and more.

A Cruise Or Boat Tour

If walking around a city or trail all day doesn’t sound appealing to you, cruise ships offer an opportunity for you to explore new places while also enjoying a cruise ships’ all-inclusive lifestyle. Here are just a few perks associated with cruises:

  • Relaxing travel between multiple destinations.
  • They’re family-friendly.
  • Variety of food and dining options.
  • Onboard activities and amenities.

A cruise is one of the easiest ways to take a vacation without too much physical exertion, which makes them a great choice for many senior citizens. There are plenty of options when it comes to the best cruises for seniors , but you should consider choosing one that accommodates your activity level and fits into your vision of an ideal vacation. Thankfully, there are plenty of cruise lines that accommodate mobility issues.

A Food Road Trip

someone passing a dish over a table full of food

Vacations are all about indulgence, and one of the best ways to indulge on a trip is through trying new cuisine. A food road trip makes travel alluring with the chance to taste local delicacies. Road trips are also one of the easiest ways for people with limited mobility to travel, and with some planning and preparation , accessible road trips can be truly amazing! If you’ve never thought about folding some food destinations into your travel plan, now is the time.

Think about what foods you’d be willing to travel for. What about a Chicago pizza tour or a barbeque road trip ? Here are a couple ideas for your next food adventure:

  • Travel based on your absolute favorite food. If you’re in love with  Philly cheese steak, why not travel to where it originated? You’ll be able to taste test the best of what you love.
  • Visit the most iconic food destinations to see what all the hype is about. If you don’t know where to start, check out the places other foodies think are the best . If you’re someone that loves food but is indecisive on what to eat, check Yelp reviews or other review sites like TripAdvisor for the best restaurants.
  • Customize your own food tour – from hitting all the stops on a self-curated Wisconsin cheese tour or going to just a few New Hampshire ice cream destinations – you’re sure to be satisfied with a trip you’ve designed.

Biden’s ‘Very Dangerous’ Race to Avert All-Out War With Iran

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

A senior U.S. military commander landed in Israel on Thursday a day after President Joe Biden warned that Iran may soon launch a “significant” attack on the country in retaliation for the assassination of a top commander in Syria .

The trip by Gen. Erik Kurilla, who will help Israel coordinate a military strategy in response to the threat, comes at a “very dangerous” moment for regional security and for the United States, according to Bruce Riedel , a former CIA analyst who has served as senior adviser on the Middle East to four U.S. presidents on the National Security Council.

“The Israeli decision to attack, to bomb the Iranian embassy in Damascus was extremely provocative. Attacking a diplomatic facility is a big step up,” Riedel said, referring to the attack on an Iranian mission in Syria last week that killed Mohammad Reza Zahedi and other IRGC officials.

Iran has blamed the attack on Israel and pledged to retaliate. The Israeli government has yet to publicly claim responsibility for the assassination.

U.S. Intel Warns of Imminent Iranian Strike on Israel: Report

The staring contest between Iran and Israel now is the closest we’ve come to an all-out regional war since the beginning of the Gaza war, according to Jonathan Panikoff, a former Defense Intelligence Agency Middle East analyst and former deputy national intelligence officer for the Near East at the National Intelligence Council.

“The potential of a very quick spiral up the escalatory ladder is immense,” Panikoff told The Daily Beast. “The Israelis, you have a number of folks in Israel who want to frankly engage in a more fulsome conflict with Hezbollah and some who I think want to take on a conflict with Iran directly. And so, this will be that excuse if Iran responds in a way that would engender such a reaction from Israel.”

Iranian officials have signaled that the purpose of conducting retaliatory strikes against Israel would be to reestablish deterrence and prevent Israel from attacking again.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Biden administration believes an Iranian attack on Israel is imminent and could include a barrage of missile or drone strikes inside Israel proper. Israeli officials have said Israel will attack Iran in return.

“Ultimately, whether the current situation portends of an actual regional war, and a much bigger conflict, is really going to be about how Iran responds. If Iran's response is asymmetric—not in the region, against an Israeli embassy or consulate or a Jewish target somewhere outside of the region… my guess is it'll probably be contained,” Panikoff said. “On the other hand, when you have direct attacks on the Israeli homeland or a direct attack targeting Israeli officials, I think you're going to see a pretty forceful response from Israel.”

Questions remain about just how far Iran is willing to take its avowed response, including whether it would target Israeli officials abroad or within Israel itself. Iran could also lean on proxies to attack inside Israel proper, or to attack U.S. forces in Iraq or Syria. Each of these could be the spark that drags the region—or the United States—into wider war, according to Riedel.

“It’s deeply worrisome. A war with Iran would make our war with Iraq a decade ago look like kindergarten,” Riedel added.

The situation could quickly spiral out of control with Iran’s proxies even if the retaliation itself comes from Iran proper, warned Panikoff.

“If Iran went for something bigger, you could see Hezbollah or some of the militias play a role,” Panikoff said. “If you have a direct attack by Iran, and it's a big attack, and Iran is confident it’s going to lead to a war anyways, then they actually lose the advantage by not having Hezbollah also partake.”

No matter what attack Iran chooses to launch in the coming hours or days, it could also choose to wreak havoc on the world stage by employing other asymmetric attacks, including hacking operations that could hit civilian or military entities, warned Panikoff.

“I don’t think of any of the options… preclude continuation of what I would call the attacks that have been undertaken during the so-called ‘Shadow War’ between Israel and Iran,” he said, adding that cyberattacks against civilian infrastructure that Iran has carried out in recent years could continue.

While the Pentagon has said that U.S. military officials are closely monitoring the region, President Joe Biden's promise of “iron-clad” support for Israel’s self-defense doesn’t necessarily mean the United States is bound to conduct joint retaliatory strikes on Iran, Riedel said.

The Mystery Hit List in the Showdown Between Israel and Iran

“The United States has a bipartisan commitment to the defense of Israel. That does not mean we have a commitment to supporting an Israeli strike on Iran. I think the last thing Joe Biden needs or wants is another open-ended war in the Middle East,” Riedel said. “He has been trying to end the Forever Wars. Well, war with Iran is the Forever War of forever wars.”

Biden is almost certainly aware that backing Israel in a strike against Iran could be disastrous for his reelection later this year.

“If on the other hand, we do stumble into war with Iran, the question people should ask ourselves is, what is the American end game?” Riedel said. “Are we going to occupy Iran? There would be talks about reinstating the draft, and a forever war with a casualty bill that would be enormous. I think Joe Biden knows that.”

The Biden campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

Photo Illustration: The phases of a total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

  • Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
  • Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
  • Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

This composite image of thirteen photographs shows the progression of a total solar eclipse

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Image: Tyler Hanson

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at.

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

The "diamond ring effect" is shown following totality of the solar eclipse at Palm Cove in Australia's Tropical North Queensland in 2012.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

The Bailey's Beads effect is seen as the moon makes its final move over the sun during the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017 above Madras, Oregon.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
