Shinyribs defies genres as a sonic melting pot of Texas blues, New Orleans R&B funk, horn-driven Memphis soul, country twang, border music, big band swing, and roots-rock. The Austin–based nine-piece supergroup is led by Kevin Russell, a charismatic frontman with colorful suits and extravagant shoes who continuously swaps out an electric guitar for a ukulele. Russel never falls short of creating a cinematic experience, with onstage antics that often include him donning a light up cloak or leading a conga line through the crowd.  

The swampadelic R&B nine-piece outfit was named Best Austin Band at the Austin Chronicle ’s Austin Music Awards (2017, 2018) and awarded Album of the Year for I Got Your Medicine (2017). Russell’s Shinyribs have recorded seven albums: Well After Awhile (2010), Gulf Coast Museum (2013), Okra Candy (2015), the award-winning I Got Your Medicine (2017), a compilation of holiday standards and new compositions The Kringle Tingle (2018), the soulful Fog & Bling (2019), and their most recent project, Late Night TV Gold , released in August 2021. 

Ticketing & Entry

For all Millennium Stage performances, a limited number of advance reservations are available on a first come, first served basis. Advance reservations do not guarantee a seat, and patrons are encouraged to arrive early.

Online advance reservations for a given performance date will open on a rolling basis, opening every Wednesday two weeks out from the date.

For live Millennium Stage performances free tickets will also be available at the Hall of States Box Office on the day of the performance, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Seating is first come, first served. Standing room is available behind the seated area as space allows.

Kevin Russell, vocalist, guitarist and ukulele player, was the leader of an Austin, Texas band called The Gourds, before starting another group in 2007 with Gourds drummer Keith Langford which ended up being called Shinyribs. The band name's originated from an encounter Rusell had with a homeless woman after he bought her an order of ribs, to which she responded with a shout of "Shinyribs."

The band plays their original songs, but they also put their style on covers of other artists that run the gamut from "Buy U a Drank" by T-Pain, "All About That Bass" by Meghan Trainor, to David Bowie's "Golden Years." Shinyribs has recorded multiple compilation albums and full-length studio LPs, including their debut studio album titled Well After Awhile released in 2010, I Got Your Medicine in 2017 and Late Night TV Gold in 2021. Shinyribs has toured throughout the United States and has appeared at many music festivals such as Festival at the Switchyard, Suwannee Roots Revival, and Americanafest.
