A Travel Blog with Travel Tips and Interesting Facts
Small Ship Cruises on the Columbia and Snake Rivers of the Pacific Northwest
Sailing the Columbia and Snake rivers of the U.S. Pacific Northwest region delivers a scenic journey close to home. Travelers on small ship cruises can “follow in the footsteps” of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806), also known as the Corps of Discovery expedition.
But while floating along in comfort and style, they’ll gaze at incredible eco-beauty in the Columbia River Gorge (see photo below) and elsewhere.
Snow-capped Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood deliver dramatic views, while the Cascade Locks and Bonneville Dam are showpieces for incredible engineering.
For those who’ve “been there, done that” on the Mississippi River, the Columbia and Snake rivers are a natural travel progression. They’re also close to home.
What’s special? While every traveler has his or her own perspective, for some it’s seeing the Victorian-era homes of Astoria. For another, it’s perusing an incredible antique automobile and aircraft museum .
For others it’s the outdoor adventure — trekking, biking and kayaking. And, of course, other travelers love the wine tasting and craft beer scene.
Stark Scenic Diversity
Perhaps the top draw? It’s often a stark scenic diversity. Landscapes evolve from majestic spruce and pine trees to rolling hills speckled with vineyards and cherry trees. Likewise, lush landscapes transform into high desert.
“Probably the most magical aspect of a Columbia and Snake rivers sailing from my perspective is the dramatic change in landscape,” says veteran cruise journalist Judi Cuervo. She sailed on an American Queen Voyages’ cruise along the rivers in March 2022, plus also previously sailed with UnCruise Adventures.
“There you are, sailing along, and suddenly the lush, forested riverbank topped with majestic mountains is gone, and in its place is a dry, endless desert,” she explains, adding: “It happens in the blink of an eye.”
That Pacific Northwest high desert was created in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding events that occurred thousands of years ago. But today, the desert is gorgeous in its own way.
But during this cruise, travelers will also see plenty of lush, green landscapes with majestic peaks too.
Multiple Small Ship Lines
Travelers can explore the region via a range of comfortable, well-appointed small ships that operate between March and November.
Yes, you could book a land trip to these destinations. But cruising is a more comfortable, easy way to go — as you float from destination to destination. You’ll have a range of river cruise lines to choose from too.
Small ship voyages on the Columbia and Snake rivers are operated by American Cruise Lines, American Queen Voyages, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic and UnCruise Adventures , among others. Talk with your travel advisor about travel to the region and picking the cruise line that matches best with your cruise personality and personal preferences.
In this first of two blogs about the Pacific Northwest experience, The Meandering Traveler will shine the spotlight on four prime destinations that cruisers might visit, depending on the line’s itinerary.
So, drum roll please… In this blog we’ll look at:
- Astoria , Oregon;
- Vancouver, Washington;
- Richland and Walla Walla , Washington;
- Clarkston and Spokane, Washington.
In our next blog later this week, we’ll cover The Dalles, Oregon, another popular port of call.
We’ll spotlight one cruise line example per destination. But most small-ship lines sailing the Columbia and Snake rivers include a range of these ports. So, talk with your travel advisor about all the options.
Lovely Astoria, Oregon, by Small Ship
First up is, Astoria OR , just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean. Straddling three rivers, the city is among the most picturesque port destinations in North America.
One highlight is the city’s collection of lovely Victorian-era homes . Nestled into the hillsides, they overlook the Columbia River.
In addition, Astoria has a rich history – reflecting a wide range of cultures. The people of the indigenous Clatsop Tribe have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Many current residents are descendants of early settlers from other cultures.
For instance, visitors often stroll through the Garden of Surging Waves , honoring the city’s connection to China over the years. That’s because in Astoria’s 1800s history, many Chinese workers arrived to work at railroads, canneries and jetties along the Columbia River.
Astoria Riverwalk
But the city’s energy and pulse lies along the Astoria Riverwalk. Travelers often walk under the 4.1-mile Astoria-Megler Bridge , close to the Port of Astoria .
Definitely, check out the Maritime Memorial. Also, cruisers love exploring the region’s maritime history at the Columbia River Maritime Museum .
Wildlife buff? If you’re lucky, you might see sea lions lounging around the docks near 36 th Street.
Middle Village – Station Camp
If you’re interested in Lewis and Clark history, a “must see” is the Middle Village – Station Camp . Here’s the scoop.
In 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark camped here for 10 days. They were leading a Corps of Discovery exploration during the era of U.S. President Thomas Jefferson .
As they watched the Pacific waves crashing against the land at the area’s Cape Disappointment , it was the end of two years of exploration. Traversing rugged, remote U.S. territory, they’d forged a westerly path to the Pacific Ocean.
If you’d like more touring ideas for Astoria, here are two good resources.
- Astoria Warrenton Chamber of Commerce
- Visit the Oregon Coast
Small Ship: American Song
As our one example for this port, we’ve selected American Cruise Lines’ 10-night “ Northwest Pioneers ” itinerary. It operates in both directions between Portland, OR and Clarkston, OR.
ACL has several ships on this itinerary. Among them is the 180-passenger American Song ( see photo below ), the first modern-series riverboat that debuted in 2018.
That river vessel departs for these Columbia and Snake rivers cruises in June and September of 2023 and June, September and October 2024. Along the route, the cruise will visit Hayden Island, Astoria , The Dalles, Hood River and Pendleton, OR.
In addition, the ship will call at Kalama, Stevenson and Richland, WA. Also, if you love “days at sea” on an ocean voyage, it’s good to know that this river cruise has an equivalent – one day of sailing along the scenic Columbia River Gorge and another day cruising the Snake River.
American Cruise Lines also offers shorter, seven-night cruises on several ships.
Glass Galore
With extensive glass throughout the ship, American Song features a four-story glass-enclosed atrium with a large domed skylight. Guests have superb views from both accommodations and public spaces including lounges 40 feet above the water.
At press time, 2023 fares for this 10-day “ Northwest Pioneers ” itinerary on American Song started at $8,075 per person, double occupancy; fares are subject to change and availability.
For more details about this itinerary, go to this ACL website page.
Vancouver , Washington
No, we’re not talking about urban Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. That’s a highly popular and busy embarkation port.
Instead, Vancouver, WA, is a river port that’s just a short drive from Portland, OR. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River Gorge and Mount St. Helens, it’s typically the embarkation point for river cruises billed as starting in Portland.
Historical tidbits? In 1806, Lewis and Clark explored here, and by 1825, the British-based Hudson Bay Company had established Fort Vancouver as a base for fur trading activities.
If you visit Vancouver, you’ll find diverse attractions, plenty of outdoor activities, quirky shops and a vibrant craft beer scene.
We’d suggest heading to the 90-foot-long Grant Street Pier , the focal point of Vancouver’s Waterfront. It’s fun to watch the sailboats, enjoy tasty seafood or sip a Washington State wine at Maryhill Winery’s satellite tasting room.
In fact, there are multiple wine tasting spots in the pier area. Brew fans might head for the self-serve beer wall on the second floor of Barlows Public House .
Mount St. Helens
In 1980, the majestic Mount St. Helens erupted in a powerful volcanic explosion. Touring in and around the mountain is a popular option for travelers.
Heck, you can even peruse the “Blast Zone” and get a first-hand look at how Mother Nature heals from such a catastrophic event.
Many travelers visit the Johnston Ridge Observatory, the closest stop to Mount St. Helens’ crater.
So, get out your phone for a selfie. Also, another popular stop on tours of the area is the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake.
Small Ship: American Empress
American Queen Voyages’ 233-passenger American Empres s, the largest paddlewheel cruise vessel west of the Mississippi River, sails the Pacific Northwest between March and November.
Among its itineraries is a seven-night roundtrip voyage from Vancouver, WA (Portland, OR). With Victorian charm as well as modern enhancements, its week-long voyage includes port calls at Stevenson and Camas/Washougal in Washington state and Astoria and The Dalles in Oregon.
What’s nifty on this itinerary is that Vancouver itself is akin to a port call. So, guests will embark one day but then spend the rest of that day and the entire next day exploring the destination.
At press time, pricing started at $1,299 per person, double occupancy. For more details on the voyage as well as the region and ship, visit this AQV website page.
Richland and Walla Walla, Washington
Stepping off a small ship, travelers will take a short stroll beyond the park to reach downtown Richland and its restaurants, shops and attractions. What’s special? Let’s just say that this area was critical to the outcome (and end) of World War II.
In 1910, Richland was a small agricultural community, but that ambience changed during World War II as the area turned into a bedroom community for workers at the top-secret Manhattan Project .
That U.S. government program – supported by Canada and the United Kingdom – was designed to create nuclear weapons. With the Manhattan Project in town, Richland grew from 300 residents in summer 1943 to 25,000 by World War II’s end in August 1945.
The government owned all land and buildings. Upon the start of the project, the town’s residents were evicted. Government housing was built for workers in the Manhattan Project facility handling plutonium.
Today, some prefabricated duplexes and single-family homes remain from that era. They can be viewed around town.
Walla Walla
While Richland is known for the Manhattan Project, nearby Walla Walla is famed for its wine. More than 120 wineries are spread across the area and there are thousands of acres of vineyards.
The grapes grown in the Red Mountain area, near the Columbia River, are of the highest quality. That’s because of the region’s water, soil and sunshine.
Another Walla Walla draw is The REACH Museum , officially called the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center ( see photo below ). With both indoor and outdoor exhibits, this 14,000-square-foot museum recognizes the historical, ecological and scientific importance of the last free-flowing section of the Columbia River.
It’s also a gateway to the 196,000-acre Hanford Reach National Monument , established by U.S. President Bill Clinton.
Some cruise line tours feature the Franklin County Historical Society and Museum. Housed in the 1911-era Carnegie Library, this museum has original architecture that’s gorgeous.
Inside, be sure to learn how the Northern Pacific Railroad helped shape this part of Washington and how World War II impacted the local community.
Small Ship: Wilderness Legacy
We like UnCruise Adventures’ seven-day “ Rivers of Adventure and Wine ” cruise sailing roundtrip from Portland. The 86-passenger Wilderness Legacy operates this itinerary.
With a style that’s a bit different, this vessel isn’t a typical river ship. It’s more adventure- and even expedition-oriented in many ways. For example, it offers Sea Dragon, a portable launch platform for kayaks and paddle boards.
But Wilderness Legacy , purpose-built for Pacific coastal cruising, also has beautifully carved wooden cabinetry, very nice interior spaces, plus a spacious Owner’s Suite.
UnCruise’s “Rivers of Adventure and Wine” itinerary includes Astoria, the Hood River Valley, Richland/Walla Walla, the Palouse River, Deschutes River and Rowena Plateau.
Weekly departures for 2022, 2023 and 2024 run from late August through November. Fares at press time started at $4,895 per person double for 2023; pricing is subject to change and availability.
Here’s a link to more information on this UnCruise Adventures itinerary on the Columbia and Snake rivers.
Clarkston and Spokane, Washington by Small Ship
At the confluence of the Snake River and the Clearwater River , the inland port of Clarkston, WA , was settled in 1862 by Robert Bracken. In its early years, the area was called Jawbone Flats, Lewiston, Concord and other names.
Today, though, the name is Clarkston to honor the legacy of William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. Not surprisingly, directly east across the Snake River is Lewiston, ID . As the larger and older of the two towns, it’s named for Meriwether Lewis .
The Lewis and Clark expedition passed here via canoes in October 1805, although neither of the two men visited the Clarkston side of the river. They also returned to the area in 1806.
In and around Clarkston, travelers will hear tales of the famous expedition, as well as learn about this land’s first people, the Nimiipuu.
Of course, for many travelers, the draw isn’t history nor culture — it’s viniculture! Fortunately, this is a stellar grape-growing region. Here you’ll find the award-winning Basalt Cellars Winery and Parejas Cellars among others.
Spokane and Hells Canyon
Spokane, WA, is the airport gateway for Clarkston departures. Many cruisers tour Spokane during a pre- or post-cruise tour or stay.
One fun factoid? Spokane was the childhood home of singer and actor Bing Crosby .
Near Gonzaga University , Crosby fans might opt to tour the house where Bing Crosby grew up ( see photo at right ).
They can also see a collection of the crooner’s memorabilia.
For other diversions, cruise guests also can hop aboard the historic Looff Carousel , gaze at gorgeous Spokane Falls and make an ascent up “ The Hill.”
Among the rewards for that ascent, for instance, are incredible views of elegant mansions and city sites.
Flora lovers who arrive at this destination can start celebrating now. Why? Spokane has a cornucopia of blooming attractions. They include the formal Duncan Gardens , Joel Ferris Perennial Gardens, Rose Hill Gardens and the flower-filled Conservatory.
Jet Boat Ride through Hells Canyon
Highly popular with travelers is a jet boat ride through Hells Canyon , North America’s deepest gorge.
In addition to spectacular scenery, cruisers might spot bighorn sheep, deer, eagles and other wildlife as the boat traverses the canyon.
In addition, a stop in Hells Canyon is often made at the Idaho Garden Creek Preserve , owned by the Nature Conservancy.
Small Ship: National Geographic Quest
Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic offers a seven-night “ Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey ” on dates in September and October 2022 and 2023. Other Lindblad ships will also sail this route on other dates.
Operating this voyage is the 100-passenger National Geographic Quest . With 50 outside staterooms, the small ship was purpose-built to explore the North American coast.
What’s special? During this voyage, National Geographic Quest will transit a series of eight locks that lift the ship 700 feet. That’s 10 times the elevation of the Panama Canal!
As for the itinerary, the cruise begins in Portland and subsequent days are spent in Astoria, the Columbia River Gorge/Hood River, Palouse River and the journey concludes in Clarkston .
Fares at press time started at $5,710 per person, double occupancy. They’re subject to change and availability.
For more details, here’s the Lindblad website page that explains this small-ship vacation experience.
On to The Dalles
At week’s end, The Meandering Traveler will focus on The Dalles , another popular port of call for cruise guests sailing the Columbia and Snake rivers.
Have questions? Definitely, chat with your professional travel advisor about the small ship voyages offered on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Columbia & snake rivers faq, what should i pack for a columbia & snake rivers cruise.
If you're traveling the Columbia and Snake rivers during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), average temperatures range from 65- 85 degrees during the day and cool to around 45-50 degrees at night. Pack a few long-sleeved t-shirts and light sweaters that you can layer over or under your clothes in case the weather gets chilly.
You can pack lighter, if you’re cruising in late June through late August, as daytime temperatures average between 85-95 degrees, dropping to 65-70 degrees at night.
No matter which season you are cruising, comfortable shoes are a must for your daily adventures. A windbreaker, preferably waterproof, is also ideal for watching the everchanging landscapes and native wildlife from your private balcony or the sun deck. Be sure to pack fitness clothing if you intend to use our onboard fitness center and don’t forget your daily medications.
When is the best time to cruise the Columbia & Snake Rivers?
For some, the best time to visit the Columbia and Snake rivers is late April through June, and then again in September and October. Spring is peak bloom time for the Columbia River Gorge's wildflowers and orchards and the verdant landscapes along the shore are a sight to behold.
In Autumn the temperatures are not yet too chilly, but the transitioning colors are spectacular. October is also the ideal time for wine enthusiasts to visit, as this is when the harvest and crushing take place.
Summer is the most popular season to visit the Pacific Northwest because of the long sunny days, warm temperatures, and blue skies. So, the best time to set out on your Columbia & Snake Rivers cruise will depend on whether you like it hot, or if you prefer to witness the most colorful landscapes.

Small Ship Cruise Calendar: Where to Sail & When
Pick any month of the year, and we can guide you to a small ship cruise . AdventureSmith Explorations’ style of immersive expedition cruising spans the globe, with small ships positioning to take advantage of the best sailing seasons for weather and wildlife-spotting opportunities. For example, several yachts follow the whales to spend their summers in Alaska and winters in Baja, and other ships hop between the poles as their strengthened hulls make them best suited for the ice. Here’s a look at what’s in season, where, for expedition cruising by month in a table, followed by detailed looks at each (northern hemisphere) cruise season.
Small Ship Cruise Calendar
Summer Season Small Ship Cruises
Thinking of traveling by small ship for a summer vacation? Look to these popular locales, or scroll down to see more options listed in our year-round small ship cruises section.
Alaska – March through September
Alaska is often hailed as the birthplace of small ship expedition cruising. Its remote Inside Passage coastline is prime for ship exploration as many locales and port towns are only accessible from the water. The Alaska small ship cruise season kicks off with a select few vessels sailing as early as March to take advantage of the Pacific herring migration and better chances to see the Northern Lights. There are prime times within the season for spotting bears, seeing whales in feeding pods and exploring Denali National Park. For more details about these seasons-within-the-season, see our comprehensive How to Choose Your Alaska Cruise guide.
Arctic & Northern Europe – April through October
Expeditions in the vast Arctic region, including its crossover Northern Europe locales, begin with warmer weather in April and continue through October when daylight hours are longer. When to sail during this time depends upon your interests for spotting polar bears, seeing large ice floes, hiking on land, covering more ground and/or seeing the Northern Lights. For a canal cruise in England, Ireland river cruise or Scotland barge cruise, target travel for spring through early fall. Learn more about Arctic cruises , and see our comprehensive How to Choose Your Arctic Cruise guide for more detailed information.
Mediterranean – March through November
Look for Mediterranean cruise itineraries along the shores of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia & the Dalmatian Coast and west toward Spain and Portugal to sail in the summer months’ subtropical highs. Seasonal winds called “meltemi” blow through and pleasantly cool the atmosphere during this time. In the height of summer, ports can be crowded, so look to the shoulder-season sailings for a bit slower pace. While most small ships stay put in tropical climes, we see the occasional Mediterranean vessel head north in the off season to Arctic locales like Iceland and west to the likes of Costa Rica .
East Coast – April through November
East Coast cruises begin in the south and move north, following optimal temperatures from spring through fall. Enjoy spring in bloom throughout South Carolina’s Low Country before moving up through the Chesapeake Bay and into Maine and Cape Cod, finishing with New York and New England’s fall foliage.
Winter Season Small Ship Cruises
Vessels often don’t stay in locations like Alaska and the Arctic during the dark days of winter, and thus position south to warmer waters. Here’s a look at where many vessels overwinter to seek the sun.
Baja & Costa Rica – Nov/Dec through April/May
Baja California and Costa Rica are common sister destinations to Alaska since small ships seeking to bypass the Alaskan cold can easily follow the coastline south. Looking at Baja California cruises , in particular, a number of vessels follow the whales down to their mating and birthing grounds in the gentle, warm bays off Baja’s Pacific coast and the interior haven of the Sea of Cortez. And for Costa Rica cruises and Panama cruises , small ships enjoy this time as the average rainfall is lower and migrant bird populations are highest. While it’s technically “winter” for these northern hemisphere locales, the daytime air temperature is usually in the 80s so wintertime is a great time to head to the beaches and coastlines here! For more information, consult AdventureSmith’s How to Choose Your Baja Cruise and How to Choose Your Costa Rica Cruise guides.
Antarctica – October through March
The sister cruise season to the Arctic is Antarctica , which has the opposite summer/winter timing yet many of the same requirements for vessels to be ice strengthened. Sea ice, daylight and weather are the main factors for Antarctica’s expedition cruise season, so you’ll find polar expedition vessels spending their time here in the austral summer. Ships sailing early season often have more opportunities for skiing, mid-season is prime for seeing penguin chicks and later itinerary options highlight whale watching. See our comprehensive How to Choose Your Antarctica Cruise guide for more detailed information on Antarctica’s seasonal highlights.
Patagonia – September through April
Patagonia expedition cruises in Chile also sail in the austral summer months, when the weather is prime for combining voyages to explore places like Torres del Paine National Park and Antarctica . The port of Punta Arenas is the main hub, and while it’s summer here, pack a parka as this region is known for its winds. Average air temperature during the cruise season hovers in the upper 50s.
Spring & Fall Season Small Ship Cruises
While many of the summer and winter season cruises detailed above operate in these shoulder seasons—and our year-round options detailed below all operate in the spring and fall seasons—we see a few itineraries that only sail during this time.
Pacific Northwest – April & May, August through November
Pacific Northwest cruises cover the Columbia River, San Juan Islands and Olympic Wilderness regions, the latter two being the gateway for ships sailing to and from Alaska. Find various ships sailing here in the spring and fall to take advantage of whale and bird migrations, as well as harvest seasons for grapes, oysters, hops and other regional fare.
Year-Round Small Ship Cruises
These popular small ship cruise destinations don’t have downtimes, save for slight seasonal/regional variations and dry dock periods when ships leave the water for repairs and refreshes.
Galapagos Islands
Due to the equatorial climate and combination of Panama, Peru and Humboldt ocean currents from the north and south, Galapagos cruise ships are able to stay year-round in this famed archipelago. For all the nuances of the Galapagos seasons, and when to go if you have a specific wildlife encounter on your bucket list, view our comprehensive How to Choose Your Galapagos Cruise guide and Galapagos By Month: When to Go & Why .
The Amazon River
The Amazon River and its tributaries span into the countries of Brazil, Ecuador and Peru when looking at active Amazon small ship cruise options. You can sail year-round in all these countries, but note that Peru’s Amazon is distinct in that there is a more dramatic high-water (typically November-May) and low-water season (typically June-October), the latter allowing for more trail walks on terra firma vs. skiff cruising. See our comprehensive How to Choose Your Amazon Cruise guide for more detailed information on the different regions of the Amazon and timing your trip.
For Hawaii small ship cruises , yachts choose to island-hop where the day boats can’t go. This offers an intimate way to cruise remote, untouched lands, away from tourist-heavy locales.
While you can sail any month on Australia cruises , especially in the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, there are seasonal variations that have ships positioning as far south as Tasmania (roughly January through April) and up to Cape York and the Kimberley region (typically March through October).
Southeast Asia
Many small ships in the greater Southeast Asia cruise region also sail year-round thanks to favorable seas and climate. Look for sailings any month on the Mekong River, as well as in Indonesia , which has seasonal variations like expeditions up into the lesser-visited Raja Ampat archipelago during West Papua’s dry months of November and December.
A Note About When to Book Your Small Ship Cruise
Now that you’re primed on when to sail, how about when to book? For the best selection of small ship cruises and available cabins, advance reservations are encouraged and often required. While we’ve had success finding travelers last-minute space, your best bet is to always book early for your best match at dates, travel style and cabin choice. The most popular small ship cruises are often sold out 6 to 9 months in advance. We often see the next year’s rates released a year in advance, and nearly two years in advance for polar destinations like Antarctica and the Arctic.

We want to depart Venice for Dubrovnik in May. We are two active couples in our 70s. We were booked on a Crystal Cruise luxury yacht the Esprit (under 70 passengers) that stopped in Rovinj, Sibenik, Trogir, Vis, Hvar, Korcula, and Dubrovnik. Crystal sold the Esprit to Linblad and now all we have is a refund. Can you help?

Testimonials
I cannot tell you or express in words how much we enjoyed this opportunity - I've never been in such peaceful, raw beauty, and so remote before. To think this was just a piece of what Alaska is. My favorites were watching Bear, the fish in the stream, getting out in the dingy boat and the beautiful moon over crystal clear glass water; and oh yes, the BIG calving glaciers!!
Annene R. Phoenix, AZ P.S. Your crew was pretty amazing too.

Day 1: Portland, OR
At the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, Portland was once a sanctuary for pioneers. Today, the city is surrounded by national parkland but also features an array of museums and shopping areas. Arrive a day early and visit the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum or the Portland Art Museum.
Day 2: Astoria, OR
The oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, the town of Astoria is steeped in culture and tradition, with more than 70 Victorian-era homes lining its historic streets. Visit a replica of Fort Clatsop and learn about what the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition endured on their pioneering journey into the West. Explore the Columbia River Maritime Museum, a tribute to mariners around the globe for their service on the high seas.
Day 3: Kalama, WA
Explore Kalama, a small town nestled in between the big cities of Portland, OR, and Seattle, WA. While here you can peruse one of the many antique stores, take a walk along the Columbia River, or visit one of the nearby wineries. Perhaps the most impactful of all landmarks in the region is Mount St. Helens. From high on an overlook, bear witness to the awesome power of the volcano whose eruption in 1980 scorched 230 square miles of forest land and forever changed the landscape and the lives of those in the surrounding towns.
Day 4: Day of Cruising the Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting through the Cascade Mountain Range with amazing natural contrasts of rain forest and desert, sea-level passage and alpine meadows. As a the largest federally protected National Scenic Area in the United States, the Gorge boasts stunning waterfalls, basalt cliffs, lakes, streams, rivers, and fields of wildflowers.
In the 1800’s, Lewis & Clark traveled down the scenic Columbia River Gorge on their journey westward, with the Oregon Trail pioneers following soon after. Today, the area offers a variety history museums and art centers, fine dining, theaters, wineries, many recreational opportunities, as well as some of the most impressive landscapes in the world.
Day 5: Stevenson, WA
Multnomah Falls is an awesome sight to behold. After cruising past the waterfall, enjoy an up-close view of one of North America’s tallest waterfalls. Stroll along the footpath to Benson Bridge for the best view of this natural wonder. Explore the village of Stevenson, easily accessible from our dock, offering small town charm and a unique Northwest flair.
Day 6: Hood River, OR
At the base of Mount Hood lies the sleepy town of Hood River. The old trading post is most famous as the terminus of the Mount Hood Railroad, where timber and produce would be transferred to ships and sent downriver. Now the historic railroad is a highlight of the area, winding its way high into the mountains for unprecedented views of the Gorge and the tallest peak in Oregon.
Day 7: The Dalles, OR
Located between Mount Hood and Mount Adams, The Dalles is famous for being the last stop on the historic Oregon Trail. To the pioneers, the terrain was treacherous; to today’s visitors, it is simply stunning. Overlooking the Columbia River Gorge is Cascade Cliffs Winery, the ideal place to spend an afternoon with expert sommeliers enjoying the bounty of the fertile Columbia Valley.
Day 8: Richland, WA
Incorporated in 1910, Richland sits at confluence of the Yakima and Columbia River. Enjoy strolling along its picturesque waterfront which offers walking trials, antique shops, and several wineries. This vibrant city is also home to a variety of theaters, art galleries, and museums. Visit the REACH Museum, a popular destination which illustrates the unique culture and history of the region through over 14,000 square feet of exhibits.
Day 9: Pendleton, OR
A charming city in Umatilla, OR, Pendleton began as a European-American commercial center around 1851. Incorporated as a city in 1880, Pendleton is known for its beautiful countryside, indigenous Native American tribes, and the network of underground tunnels created a century ago for illicit activities. The area is also famous for its lucrative wool trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit the Pendleton Woolen Mill and Museum to learn about the town’s weaving process that has produced world famous woolens since 1901.
Day 10: Cruising the Snake River
On your journey to Clarkston, WA, cruise the renowned Snake River along mountain ranges, canyons, and plains. Relax on the sun deck or your private balcony and view the spectacular wildlife that lives along its shores, including Otter, Coyote, Pronghorn, Deer, Coyote, Mountain Goat, and Marmots. You may also spot Osprey and Eagles and variety of different species of birds.
Day 11: Clarkston, WA
Conclude your incredible voyage in Clarkston, WA, named for William Clark of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition. After breakfast, we will transport you to the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport (LWS) to begin your journey home.
Or you may take advantage of our brand new Hells Canyon Post-Cruise Package which includes a 1-night hotel stay, Hells Canyon Jet Boat Adventure, breakfast, and transportation to the airport the following day.

- 6 Coolest Towns in The Pacific Northwest for a Summer Vacation in 2024
Low in crowds and high in attractions—what more can a heart desire for a summer getaway or vacation? How about a dose of PNW charm and wildness in equal proportion to what these towns aspire to? Spectacularly remote within the vast region, the shoreside gems offer easy access along scenic oceanfront highways, while the inland town of Snoqualmie is Seattleans' favorite escape, being 30 miles out of the city. There's no better time than this summer to visit a cool town under the hot sun with a beach nearby and shaded hikes a hop away.
Seaside, Cannon Beach's calm neighbor, offers a fair share of incredible attractions by the ocean, like the unique Painted Rock Beach, animal interactions at the Seaside Aquarium, and the mega-popular Funland Entertainment. Snoqualmie is home to a gigantic waterfall for misty picnics and adventures through the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. From the soaring mountainscapes to the soaring eagles over the ocean in Oysterville and comic baby seals, the Pacific Northwest keeps it authentic but incredibly cool.
Bandon, Oregon
Panoramic view of sea stacks along Bandon Beach in Oregon.
Bandon , at the heart of Oregon's South Coast, where the beach feels softer, and the sun feels pleasant enough to make you linger just a tad longer at ocean vistas, yearns for a true expression of the PNW. From the boulder-studded Bandon Beach to Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint, this is coastal life to the fullest, to taste in the salty air, seafood at Lord Bennett's Sand, and delectable pies and pastries throughout bakeries like Bandon Coffee Cafe. The active can enjoy fishing, hiking, and kayaking on the Wild Rivers Coast, while the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge is just to the north for a nature hike.
Once destroyed by a fire, Bandon is home to charming shops and galleries, a wooden boardwalk on the beach, and spectacular sunsets while lounging on the sands, making it undeniably cool and hitting something on the bucket list of every traveler in the PNW. Bandon is the "Cranberry Capital of Oregon," with thriving agriculture, and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is world-famous for having the best links in the country. Putting its heart into everything and bringing the storied past into the present, don't miss Coquille River Lighthouse and the intriguing outdoor sculptures of painted creatures at the waterfront Washed Ashore Gallery & Volunteer Workshop.
Camas, Washington

Camas, a small Washington town, delivers a hefty dose of cool for any taste to maximize every PNW experience. Nestled between Lacamas Lake and the Columbia River , visitors can enjoy waterfront recreation from the doorstep, from calm kayaking paddles to the thrills of whitewater rafting. One of the larger small towns, Camas, comes with a lot of attractions for active seafood lovers or if relaxing is your top priority. From the waterfront Heritage Park to Lacamas Park for hikes, Liberty Theatre and Top Burger Drive-in evoke an old-timey feel.
Home to just over 27,000, the tree-lined town nestles in between the rugged Washington Coast and the nearby forests with easy access over tranquil, misty hills, perfect for a packed picnic or a backpack for in-depth hikes. Lacamas Lake Regional Park is just a hop from the Camas downtown area with its historic buildings, where visitors can browse the Camas antique store filled with gifts before departing, while the aforesaid cinema also hosts live performances and music concerts for a romantic and cultural evening. There's no better time to plan a visit than now for the Camas Farmers Market between May and October and the 2024 Camas Plant & Garden Fair.
Oysterville, Washington
If oysters, quirky history, and dreamy seaside walks are your cup of tea, take a stroll along the shores of Willapa Bay with bald eagles diving for small fish and oysters in the tide pools—life-changing. The ocean here ebbs at its own tide, and the comic baby seals entertain passersby while their mamas snack on some of the best salmon in the country, which you, too, can enjoy. Just a tiny town of profound beauty found along the north end of the 45-mile Long Beach Peninsula, Oysterville, will take away your breath as a photographer's paradise. This historic village with ultra-fresh seafood from the bay, one of the top-producing oyster regions in the world, maximizes the sweeping views over the bay to the horizon at sunset, coloring the skies in purples and oranges.
Home to Oysterville Sea Farm, visitors can buy fresh-from-the-sea delicacies and cook 'em up over a beachside fire or a grill at a cozy waterfront rental. From fishing charters to Ilwaco on the south end of the peninsula to a scenic drive between the area’s seafood markets for some of the Pacific Northwest’s finest Dungeness crab, salmon, and Albacore tuna, don't miss a downtown stroll amid perfectly preserved homes from the 1800s and manicured gardens straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. In the mid-1800s, Robert Hamilton Epsy and Isaac Alonzo Clark befriended Chief Klickeas of the Chinook Indian tribe, who introduced them to oystering. Sold as far as San Francisco , Oysterville was the county seat of Pacific County until a legendary rebel stole all the county documents, and the seat went to South Bend.
Seaside, Oregon

Not quite as popular as the neighboring Cannon Beach , Seaside is every bit as beautiful. Home to a beachfront promenade, from the Little Beach to the Seaside Beach, the unique Painted Rock Beach is southernmost, and visitors can enjoy wistful strolls in between all three for different vibes and views to lounge in. This family-friendly town boasts attractions like the Seaside Aquarium, which has interactive marine life and creatures like seals and sea lions next door to the mega-popular Funland Entertainment Center right in the heart, by the ocean.
Don't miss a chance for a sunset stroll of your life at Seaside Cove; chances are you'll be virtually alone for the most romantic photoshoot, perfect after a day of go-karting at the fun Captain Kid Amusement Park nearby. Featuring not one but two rivers through the heart, visitors can follow the Necanicum River to where it empties into the Pacific or the Neacoxie Creek to the ocean. From there, it is all about paddleboarding or surfing in the sea, or, if you prefer to stay dry, ride the bike path along the promenade against the sea or hike some incredible trails through Ecola State Park with expansive views of the rocky coastline.
Snoqualmie, Washington
View of Snoqualmie Falls on a powerful day in Washington State.
Snoqualmie, a remarkable town in the Evergreen State to visit in the summer, stands wholeheartedly behind its nickname, delivering a dose of inland wilderness. Just 30 minutes from the city, it is Seattleans' favorite escape on the weekends, and you could discover over a whole vacation of wonders that this scenic Washington Corner is renowned for. Home to Snoqualmie Falls, a world-class natural landmark and attraction, it is a spectacular sight to behold in the refreshing mist under the sun after a hot day hike. The magnificent 268-foot waterfall is a background location in the hugely popular 1990s TV show Twin Peaks, while the 45-mile Snoqualmie River runs through the town's heart.
Great for recreation from the doorstep, waterside strolls, and pretty views while browsing for souvenirs or a bite to eat, the three forks join above the waterfall in a sight to behold and experience as boaters and anglers do while the hikers in your group explore the trails through Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Reconvene at a great camping site, Douglas Fir Campground, for a night under the stars on the banks of the North Fork Nooksack River after a fire-cooked fish dinner against sunset views. The 7.7-mile Mailbox Peak Trail Loop is an arduous and rewarding trek to reward yourself with wine at Sigillo Cellars or a deserving stay and some pampering at the Attic at Salish Lodge & Spa.
Winchester Bay, Oregon
Aerial view of Winchester Bay, Oregon.
Winchester Bay is a small port village between the open waters of the ocean at the Pacific end of the Umpqua River and the bay in the heart of the dunes, with its most notable attraction being the Umpqua River Lighthouse Museum. Whether you're in for sailing, dune buggy rides, or exploring the length of the river via kayak, Winchester Bay is an ideal base camp for all the cool pursuits, with no better place to start than the lighthouse with the Coastal Visitors Centre and gift shop for souvenirs before departing. As a long-time riverside strategic location and no stranger to expeditions, the frontier town in between the Oregon Coastal Dunes and the Southern Coast thrived early from fur and timber trades.
The legacy is its historic downtown, the flamboyant light, and plenty of unique opportunities in the outdoors for visitors, like photography, horseback along the beach, trails, and dunes, or partaking in the famous crabbing tradition. Being in the "Crab Capital of the World," there's everything from rental equipment to guides to try your own hand at crabbing for fresh Dungeness crab, ending the day with a fire-cooked dinner along the shore at sunset. Visitors can even rent out a yurt or cabin by the sea to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean and view of Umpqua Lighthouse, open for tours, and step out into the fresh morning sea breeze with gentle waves at their feet.
Discover Your Perfect Pacific Northwest Escape
The Pacific Northwest, aka Cascadia, covers mountain ranges, rugged coasts, sandy beaches with wilderness in between, and tiny towns close to it all. From Washington to Oregon , the Pacific Northwest is full of beauty, while the towns come with quirks like Bandon's intriguing outdoor sculptures of painted creatures at the waterfront Washed Ashore Gallery & Volunteer Workshop or Camas' old-timey attractions like the waterfront Heritage Park, as well as Liberty Theatre and Top Burger Drive-in for the evening. Evoking every kind of fantasy, there's a town on this list with something cool to catch your eye, where a simple stroll along the shores of Willapa Bay in Oysterville around tide pools is not just dreamy but life-changing.
