Embarking on a 13-day budget camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania was an adventure that exceeded all expectations. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the majestic landscapes of the Maasai Mara, every moment was filled with awe-inspiring sights, thrilling wildlife encounters, and unforgettable experiences. Our journey began in Nairobi, where we were warmly welcomed by our knowledgeable guides from Exciting Africa Holidays. From the very start, their passion for wildlife and dedication to providing an authentic safari experience shone through. With a small group of like-minded travelers, we set off on our adventure, ready to explore the best of East Africa on a budget. The first stop on our itinerary was the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve. Camping under the starlit sky in the heart of the Mara allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the sights and sounds of the wilderness. Our days were spent traversing the savannah in search of the Big Five, and we were not disappointed. From herds of elephants to prides of lions, every game drive brought us closer to nature in its rawest form. Crossing the border into Tanzania, we ventured into the legendary Serengeti National Park. The endless plains stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with acacia trees and grazing wildlife. Witnessing the Great Migration was a highlight of our journey, as thousands of wildebeests and zebras thundered across the plains in search of greener pastures. Camping amidst the Serengeti's vastness was a humbling experience, reminding us of the true essence of Africa. Continuing our adventure, we explored the wonders of Ngorongoro Crater, a natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife. Descending into the crater, we were greeted by a plethora of species, from rhinos to hippos, against the backdrop of the crater's towering walls. Camping on the crater rim provided us with panoramic views of this natural wonder, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As our journey came to an end, we made our way to Amboseli National Park, where the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro loomed large on the horizon. The sight of elephants roaming freely against the snow-capped peak was a fitting finale to our East African adventure. Gathering around the campfire one last time, we reflected on the incredible experiences we shared and the friendships we forged along the way. In conclusion, the 13-day budget camping safari through Kenya and Tanzania was a dream come true for budget-conscious travelers seeking an authentic African adventure. With Exciting Africa Holidays /Tourradar, every aspect of the journey was meticulously planned, from comfortable camping accommodations to unforgettable wildlife encounters. Reviews of Small Group tours to Kenya And Tanzania

The tour was exactly what we expected. It was early mornings, lots of time in vehicles searching for animals, and a lot of photography and amazing sights. The campsites were awesome, but make sure you are okay sleeping in tents with 3” foam mattresses (it wasn’t a problem for us, but you need to expect to rough it a bit). The guide, drivers, and cooks were amazing and incredibly helpful and kind.

Tour Itinerary

Our tour of East Africa starts in the Kenyan capital city of Nairobi. We meet at a hotel in the heart of this busy, bustling, modern city. For those arriving early, there are a variety of optional tours and excursions on offer – these can be arranged on arrival at the hotel. At 18h00 we meet for a pre-tour briefing before getting to know each other over an own expense dinner at a local restaurant.

We dive straight into the adventure and head directly for Masai Mara National Reserve. To get there the road climbs up to the edge of the Great Rift Valley, affording magnificent views over the Africa of our imaginations. The Mara is famous for the annual mass migration of wildebeest and zebra, and is the scene of heartbreak for the young animals taken by the hundreds of crocodiles in the Mara River. But the sheer weight of numbers ensures most animals are lucky enough to escape. We arrive in the afternoon and spend the next two nights camping adjacent to the park. An accommodation upgrade is available every night of the tour, but this must be booked before departure to avoid disappointment.

We leave early for a full day of extensive game driving. The Mara is renowned for its abundance of plains game and the ever-present predators following the herds. We follow seasonal migrations when possible, our safari truck giving us an elevated view of the plains. We stop for a picnic lunch between game drives and only return to camp in the late afternoon, tired and hungry, ready for a hearty meal around the camp fire.

Leaving The Mara, we track back to Mount Longonot National Park, with its dormant volcano. We temporarily abandon our vehicle as our guide leads us on a hike up to the crater rim, for a view of the jagged-edged caldera and the forest within. It’s also a good spot for views of the Rift Valley. The volcano last erupted in the early 1900s but steam vents may still be visible, and on the way there is a variety of plains game to be seen while we walk. We will take a packed lunch along, for a picnic with a view. Reunited with our safari truck, it’s only a short drive to our campsite on the shores of Lake Naivasha, where we set up camp for the next two nights.

This morning we drive the short distance to the famous Hell’s Gate National Park, named by 19th century explorers for a natural cleft in the high basalt cliffs. The dramatic scenery here was the inspiration for the the movie “The Lion King”, and it’s a great place to walk, with the chance of seeing zebra, giraffe and buffalo amongst various species of antelope. The adventurous have the option to explore the park on a bicycle (local hire, own expense). Hot springs are a reminder of the volcanic activity below our feet, and nearby Olkaria Geothermal Power station takes advantage of this. We head back to camp for lunch, and follow this with an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Naivasha, to get close to hippo and some of the 400 species of birds that the lake attracts. A final highlight in a busy day is a visit to Elsamere, the former home of the original “lion whisperers”, George and Joy Adamson, for high tea and to gain some insight into their fascinating lives.

Today we head for Tanzania and the town of Arusha, passing through the outskirts of Nairobi on our way south. Crossing the border, we catch glimpses of Mt Kilimanjaro through the clouds, and skirt the base of Mt Meru, Africa’s 5th highest mountain. Known as the Tanzania’s “safari capital”, Arusha is a busy cross-roads of safari operators and travellers from all over the world. It is also the seat of the East African Community and important regional diplomatic hub.

Our Tanzanian safari begins as we enter Serengeti National Park. The road climbs the flanks of Ngorongoro before descending to the flat plains of the Serengeti, the golden grassland dotted with flat-topped acacias. This is quintessential Africa, the scene of an annual migration when the grasslands turn black with the bodies of wildebeest. The game is abundant in every season and the predators that stalk the herds are never far behind. We will camp two nights on the Serengeti plain, spending our days game driving, living in one of nature’s greatest scenes, the nights around a camp fire with a star-studded sky overhead.

Rising before the sun for coffee around the camp fire, we leave for a full day of exploring the park as the day breaks. We have all day for game viewing as our guide explains the behaviour and habits of the animals we encounter. We stop regularly for comfort breaks, and have a picnic lunch in the wilds. Returning to our camp as the sun sets, we relax around the fire, swapping stories and photographs as the crew prepare a delicious meal.

At dawn we leave for our final game drive on the plains, returning mid morning to strike camp and have brunch. We then drive back up the steep slopes of Ngorongoro to the top of this extinct volcano. On the way it’s a little strange to see the Masai tribesmen herding their cattle amongst the wildlife, still living their customary lifestyle as they have for centuries. We camp tonight at the renowned Simba Camp, perched on the edge of the crater, with breathtaking views into the caldera.

At first light we board 4×4 safari vehicles to make the daring descent into the crater, a route too steep and precipitous for our safari truck. Here we explore the crater, a marvel of nature with its steep forested walls, fertile grass plains, lake, salt pan and fever tree forest. It is a microcosm of the continent’s great safari destinations, with the possibility of seeing many of Africa’s mammals all in one place, including the rare Black Rhino. We take the steep route out of the crater to return to Simba Camp for lunch, exiting the park in the early afternoon and descending the escarpment to our camp for the night, in a village amongst the Masai people. This afternoon we will tour the village with a Masai guide and hear about their way of life, their culture, and how they fit into the modern world.

We awake to the bustling noise of village life, and after breakfast we make our way back to Arusha. We have lunch in town and then spend the afternoon exploring the markets and curio shopping for those presents to take home to family and friends. Tonight we will enjoy an own expense meal at a local restaurant to celebrate our safari and our final night together.

After breakfast, we set off to complete the circle back to Nairobi. (On occasion we may use the shuttle bus to transfer clients.) This road travels through some spectacular scenery, and on a clear day, we have a second chance to see mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. En route to Nairobi city, the transfer will pass via the airport to facilitate those who are flying out today. Everyone staying on in Nairobi, or continuing their travels, will be taken into the city centre.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

When To Go On Safari …

• January to February: Summer – dry and warm; cooler at Ngorongoro because of elevation. Migration picks up, with plenty of game throughout central/southern Serengeti.

• March: Rains become possible, bringing plains animals in search of fresh grass and food. Significant movement of antelope and other game to the plains for calving season; predators follow.

• June to October: Dry season; can be cold on the rim of Ngorongoro. Wildebeest and plains game begin migrating in search of water. By late July, wildebeest migration is in full swing, with opportunities for excellent game viewing and predator kills, especially in the Masai Mara.

• November to December: Season of the “short” rains (brief daily thunderstorms); comfortable temperatures at Ngorongoro; warm in the Serengeti, with plentiful game.

Situated high on a tree-clad ridge with panoramic views over the vast Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge fuses traditional African architecture with contemporary amenities.  Circular rondavel dwellings with thatched roofs and the winding paths of a traditional Maasai village mark the lodge that sits amidst groves of indigenous trees surrounded by streams and ponds.  Amenities include an outdoor pool; two-tiered dining room dominated by a central barbecue area; traditional music and dance; massage and spa treatments; laundry service (for a fee); complimentary Wi-Fi internet access; and safari boutique and gift shop.  Guest rooms, in individual rondavel huts, feature private bath with hair dryer, in-room safe, wildwood balconies, intricately carved furniture, mosquito nets, and phone.

Small group safari Tanzania feedback

A very efficient and friendly service provided by Arno – the booking process was seamless. All information provided was very clear and helpful. The itinerary was a good mix and staying in Serengeti for two nights made for a more relaxing trip. The lenght of tour for us was ideal. We believe the trip was well priced for the overall package.

ON TANZANIA'S FAMOUS NORTHERN SAFARI CIRCUIT - THE CLASSIC SAFARI DESTINATIONS

On Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, you can discover the Big Five, incredible landscapes and stay at personal camps and lodges. Classic safari destinations await you: From the plains of the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Tarangire National Park, dotted with Baobab trees and home to many elephants. Thanks to our sister company in Kenya, we offer small group safaris as crossing-border trips to Kenya as well.

The most popular time to experience a Tanzanian safari is during the dry season from June to October. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity levels are low, and the chance of rain is minimal. It is the perfect season to witness how vast numbers of prey congregate near rivers and water holes, which encourages predators to base themselves in these areas. However, it is also a busy time on the Northern Circuit. For a more intimate experience with fewer tourists and vehicles around, we recommend travelling during the low and shoulder season months.

Baobab during the dry season

June to late October & December to February Best time for wildlife sightings; book early

Tanzania experiences a long dry season from June until the end of October and a shorter dry period from January to February. Both are superb times to travel to Tanzania as all the national parks will be easily accessible. Not only are they the best time for a safari, but thanks to the dry weather these two periods are also a great time to experience a tropical beach retreat on the Zanzibar Archipelago. Since it is the most popular time to visit Tanzania, expect to see more safari vehicles in the popular parks on the Northern Circuit.

Green season in Tarangire National Park

Rainy Season

April, May, November Ideal to see a lusciously green Tanzania and fewer other visitors

This is the season when the landscapes turn green, the sky is clear, and the light is incredible. It occurs thanks to two rainy seasons. The long rains arrive from March to May and the short rains, which are less predictable, happen in November and December. Despite the afternoon thunderstorms, it is a great time to visit Tanzania, because the northern parks remain accessible, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful and there are fewer visitors.

GREAT EXPERIENCES AT A SMALLER PRICE

Our intimate group safaris offer nature lovers, both young and old, the opportunity to experience an authentic safari with like-minded people at a very competitive price. If you want to find out more, browse our small group safaris in Tanzania below.

EXPERIENCE TANZANIAN HOSPITALITY AT SMALL AND PERSONAL LODGES AND CAMPS

We understand the difference between the feeling you receive from a warm welcome at a small intimate lodge or a beautiful camp, compared to the empty and anonymous feeling that you get from staying in an enormous hotel. This is what makes our group safaris different and special. Not only are group sizes small, but just as importantly, you will be welcomed to a selection of small and intimate lodges and camps. Every part of a safari is an experience to savour. On our small group safaris, you will be welcomed as a guest, not just a room number.

What to expect on a small group safari in Tanzania

Advantages of a small group tour.

Rather than feel like a mass market tourist, we want you to feel like an individual traveller. From the point of your enquiry to the end of your safari, our goal is for you to experience this ethos.

We understand the importance of disconnecting from the fast-paced world of urban living, to experience nature in an authentic way. We created our small group safaris so that you can experience a Tanzanian safari with all of your senses.

We achieve this by limiting the size of our groups to seven people. But did you know that if only two travellers book a group tour, that safari will still go ahead? Plus, our guides are not only knowledgeable but skilled in allowing each guest to get the most out of their safari. Best of all you get to share the cost of this intimate experience with your travel companions and travel at a fantastic price – getting back much more in return than you ever imagined.

How to plan a group safari in Tanzania

Planning a small group safari to Tanzania is quite simple and straightforward.

We have designed and planned several itineraries to the most popular highlights and some hidden gems for you to choose from.

Group safaris start and finish on specific dates. Each day is planned out, but with the flexibility to choose some of your activities and how to spend parts of the day.

Travelling with a guide has countless advantages. They are your window to a whole new world and will share their abundant local knowledge about wildlife, plants, and local life with you. Travelling with a guide means handing over all responsibility – you know you will get to the right accommodation, at the right time. Your guide will be a constant source of information and you are likely to part as friends.

Stay safe and comfortable in our custom-designed 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers. Whilst watching wildlife make use of the roof-hatch and guaranteed window seat from where you can achieve excellent photos.

Arrive at small lodges and camps to enjoy exceptional Tanzanian hospitality, great food and a private room with all home comforts.

If you want to learn more, read through our itineraries, or contact one of our country experts who can help you with any query that you may have.

What do you see on small group safaris in Tanzania?

Tanzanian safaris transpire on three circuits. The more remote Southern and Western Circuits, where you can see incredible wildlife numbers on private safaris . And the popular Northern Circuit, which is home to some of Tanzania’s most spectacular national parks. Due to the close proximity of northern parks, our group safaris explore this area. To see the southern and western national parks, book a private trip.

The Northern Circuit has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One is the vast Serengeti National Park, home to stunning and diverse wildlife all year-round; and the second is the incredible Ngorongoro Crater, a spectacular inactive volcano. Other protected areas include Tarangire National Park, an elephant lover’s paradise; and Lake Natron, a soda lake that turns pink in the dry season and hosts ~2.5 million breeding flamingos.

Those hoping to make it to the top of Africa’s highest mountain could consider one of our group treks up Mount Kilimanjaro .

All these parks are accessed from Arusha’s Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will be collected and driven to your first destination.

Small Group Safaris Kenya

Kenya is one Africa’s finest gems, showcasing a massive array of diverse wildlife. Through African Overland Tours, you can choose from a range of accommodated safaris and tours of Kenya that allow you to personally experience this incredible country.

When it comes to spotting wildlife, Kenya is renowned for offering its travellers some of the most phenomenal game-viewing opportunities in the world. It is in this magnificent region that you can also find one of the most popular game parks in the world – the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Head out on one of the shorter budget Kenya safaris that last for around four days, allowing you time to explore the Masai Mara in search of Africa’s Big Five, as well as stand witness to the marvellous Lake Nakuru, where thousands of flamingos gather to form a pink fringe around the water’s edge. You could also choose to extend your stay in Kenya through various longer overland packages and tours that stretch across several different countries, some of which include the experience of a lifetime in the form of an awe-inspiring gorilla safari in Uganda.

Perhaps one of the greatest things about East Africa is that it never has an ‘off-season’. Instead, exquisite opportunities for game-viewing are abundantly available throughout the entire year.  When booking you Kenyan safari, however, keep in mind that there a particular buzz during the dry season, which runs from May throughout August.

If you plan on experiencing an adventure safari, take full advantage of the phenomenon of the country and plan your trip during the happening of the Great Migration, which typically runs from July through to October. During this breath-taking spectacle, millions of animals – from wildebeest to gazelles, a variety of other buck, and zebra – embark on an epic adventure, traveling from the renowned Serengeti National Park in Tanzania towards the greener pastures of the Masai Mara. This event is now deemed one of the world’s Seven New Wonders, and has been become known as the World Cup of Wildlife.

Safari tours through Kenya allow for plenty of animal-spotting opportunities, from crocodiles patiently waiting to strike as the animals cross deep rivers, to big cats excitedly chasing down prey on vast, open land. Visit Lake Naivasha where you are bound to be introduced to plenty of pelican, herons, and cormorants (among others), as well as perhaps an African Fish Eagle if luck is on your side!

As with all of our safaris, you have the choice of cheap, budget safaris, or comfort options – where you will stay in top lodges, hotels and chalets. However, no matter what your choice, a tour through Kenya will leave your soul feeling rejuvenated, and your heart with a longing to soon return to the Motherland.  From the thriving city of Nairobi to the stunning Great Rift Valley, Kenya will leave you astounded and breathless.

To start planning your adventure, contact one of our consultants now, or browse through our range of Kenyan safari packages online at your own leisure.

When you embark on our group safari tours in Kenya, you have the opportunity to visit a selection of the country’s renowned national parks, each offering unique wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes. Here are some of the Kenyan national parks that you can explore as part of our group safari tours:

  • Maasai Mara National Reserve : Known for its spectacular wildebeest migration, the Maasai Mara National Reserve is a highlight of any group safari tour. Here, you can witness vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle as they cross the Mara River, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles. The Maasai Mara also offers incredible opportunities for spotting elephants, giraffes, and a myriad of bird species.
  • Amboseli National Park : Famous for its iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park is a scenic paradise that is home to large herds of elephants. With its open grasslands and swamps, Amboseli offers excellent game viewing opportunities, including encounters with lions, zebras, buffalos, and other wildlife. The park also provides a unique cultural experience as it is inhabited by the Maasai people, who add a cultural dimension to your safari adventure.
  • Nairobi National Park : Located just outside the bustling city of Nairobi, Nairobi National Park offers a unique safari experience. It is the only national park in the world situated within a capital city’s boundaries. Despite its proximity to urban life, the park is teeming with wildlife, including lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and a variety of bird species. Exploring Nairobi National Park on our group safari tours provides a convenient way to witness incredible wildlife without venturing far from the city.
  • Ol Pejeta Wildlife Sanctuary : Situated in the Laikipia County, Ol Pejeta Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for endangered species, including the last remaining northern white rhinos in the world. This private conservancy offers an exclusive safari experience with a focus on conservation and wildlife protection. In addition to rhinos, Ol Pejeta is home to elephants, lions, leopards, zebras, and a wide array of birdlife. Exploring Ol Pejeta on our group safaris allows you to contribute to conservation efforts while enjoying remarkable wildlife sightings.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park : Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned for its incredible birdlife, including thousands of flamingos that transform the lake into a pink-hued spectacle. The park also offers opportunities to spot rhinos, buffalos, zebras, and other wildlife amidst picturesque landscapes. Exploring Lake Nakuru on our group safari tours provides an unforgettable wildlife and birdwatching experience.

These are just a few examples of the national parks you can visit on our group safari tours in Kenya. Each park offers a unique combination of wildlife, scenery, and cultural experiences, ensuring that your safari adventure is diverse and unforgettable. Our expert guides will accompany you throughout the journey, providing insightful information and ensuring you make the most of your wildlife encounters in these incredible national parks.

Tanzania Shared Group Safaris

When going on a Tanzania safari, you can either join a group tour or book a private safari. Being part of a group can be a lot of fun, especially when you’re a single traveler. Groups can be small (up to six people) or larger. Even large groups are often split up in smaller groups occupying a maximum of six to eight people per vehicle. Every vehicle will have a knowledgeable driver-guide. If the group is split up, a head guide or tour leader might move between vehicles throughout the trip. You’ll have game drives together and all meals are shared. Single travelers might have an opportunity to share accommodation to avoid the single supplement.

5 Questions About Tanzania Group Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

small group safari kenya and tanzania

What are the pros and cons of a group safari in Tanzania?

“When deciding whether to go on a group safari in Tanzania, it’s good to be aware of the pros and cons before making your choice. The main consideration is arguably one of budget. If you are a single traveler or part of a couple, joining a group will be cheaper than booking a private safari. Some of the costs on safari are shared, for example the guide fees and the vehicle. An operator might also decide on a smaller profit margin per person when putting together group tours. Many people enjoy the social element of a group tour, especially if the alternative is traveling alone. Some group tours come with a tour leader as well as a local guide. Their task is to make sure everything runs smoothly, and that all your needs are looked after. In some cases, the tour leader might bring their own expertise to the safari, such as photography or bird watching. This adds value for those who share that interest. The main negative of a Tanzanian group safari is that you’ll have to fit around set dates, and that you won’t have any flexibility in the program.”

What is the maximum group size recommended for a safari?

“The ideal group size is one that fits into one vehicle, so six to eight people. Having said that, a tour consisting of two or three vehicles (up to 18 people) should be fine as well. Independent of group size, most safari packages in Tanzania are conducted in 4x4 vehicles with a pop-up roof. The terrain doesn’t really allow for larger vehicles. These vehicles typically take up to six guests in three rows. At a push they sometimes take an extra guest in the front seat. Customized stretch vehicles have an extra row and can take up to eight people. Larger group sizes are usually split up over more vehicles. With these seating arrangements, everybody gets a window seat. There are advantages of joining a small group tour. The logistics at check-in and check-out are less chaotic, and less time is spent getting everybody together at various stops or briefings. A smaller group size allows the operator to choose smaller lodgings, which have a different feel to big hotels. The group tours described above differ from one other type of tour conducted in big converted overland trucks. These mostly aim for young clients on a tight budget. Participants might have camp duties, and camping tends to be very basic.”

Are there specialized group safaris for bird-watchers and photographers?

“Aside from general group safaris, specialized tours are also on offer, the most popular aimed at bird-watchers and photographers. For people with a particular interest, a targeted tour is an excellent option. Such tours often have expert leaders sharing their experience. Bird-watching tours will usually be led by an ornithologist with experience in local conditions, while photography tours might enjoy the expertise of a professional photographer. The choice of destinations, the duration of each stay, as well as the best time to be out and about will be designed with these interests in mind. Even professional photographers and very good birders benefit from these tours. Aside from the local expertise of the tour leaders, most individuals delight in sharing a tour with like-minded people. Such a group can be highly productive in helping you achieve your goals, whether it is ticking off a long list of birds or taking amazing photographs.”

Is there a minimum age for a group safari in Tanzania?

“Some group tours do have a minimum age. The main reason is that children might become a burden on the group. Not all travelers are child-friendly, and having young children in the group might create friction. It might also be that age restrictions apply to some of the lodges you’ll stay at, or to the activities you’ll undertake. That said, if your children have successfully been on safari before and you know they will do well in the group environment, there is no reason not to take them on a group safari, age limitations permitting. However, if you intend to take small children on a first safari, it might be better to book a private tour, which will give you more flexibility to cater to their needs. A safari can be a wonderfully enriching experience for children, but as their attention span is relatively short, a Tanzanian group safari might just be too demanding for them.”

How full will the safari vehicles be on a group safari?

“How full the safari vehicle will be will depend on your operator and you should check this prior to booking. The group size of a safari is important, but even more important is the number of people in a vehicle when on a game drive. And most important for the best wildlife viewing is that all guests have a window seat on a game drive. There are two types of group safari, a road safari or a fly-in safari. If you travel by road, your vehicle for the trip is also your game-drive vehicle. These are usually pop-up-roof 4x4 vehicles, and they can usually seat six or eight people in three or four rows (which means that everybody gets a window seat). The operators will usually try to fill the vehicle, but if they don’t have enough bookings, they might still run the tour with a vehicle at half capacity. This will then give you a lot of extra space. If you book a fly-in tour, your group will be flown around from park to park where you’ll probably be picked up in open-sided 4x4 vehicles. These vehicles usually take up to 10 passengers (three rows of three people and the front seat). That means that not everybody will have a side seat when at full capacity. The lodges use their discretion in how to fill up the game-drive vehicles, and your party or group might have to share a vehicle with other guests. However, chances are that they will allocate a vehicle for your group. So you might be sharing the 10-seater with only six or eight people. Many top lodges will not fill up their vehicles to full capacity, but try to give everybody a side seat (two people per row). It is a good idea to clarify these arrangements before booking a tour.”

East African Landscapes at Their Best With the Enticing Additions of a Kilimanjaro Climb or Zanzibar Beach

Most itineraries in Tanzania are designed around the world-famous Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, and for good reason. The fabulously impressive African landscapes and sheer concentration of game are the reasons they’re so popular,...

Which is the better pick for a safari: Kenya and Tanzania?

W hether you choose Kenya, Tanzania, or even a mix of the two, you are bound to go through unforgettable adventures in the heart of East Africa.

When it comes to epic African adventures, you’ll find two names that always come up: Kenya and Tanzania . These two iconic East African destinations offer breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife and a vast cultural background, making them prime destinations for travellers eager for unique experiences. But which is the best option for an unforgettable safari ?

Kenya vs Tanzania: where should you go on safari?

National parks and nature reserves:.

Kenya is renowned for its vast national parks such as the famous Maasai Mara, which offers some of the best viewing opportunities for the annual wildebeest and zebra migration. Amboseli National Park is another star attraction, with its majestic elephants standing out against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzania, on the other hand, is home to the Serengeti National Park, one of the continent's oldest and most diverse ecosystems, as well as the Ngorongoro Crater, an immense caldera home to an incredible concentration of wildlife .

The verdict : Both countries offer breathtaking national parks and reserves, but Tanzania stands out with iconic sites such as the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Watching the Great Migration:

The Great Migration is one of nature's most fascinating phenomena, with millions of herbivores crossing the plains in search of fresh pasture. The Maasai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania are hotspots for this mass migration, offering incredible opportunities to observe animals on the move.

The verdict : Although both countries are able to make you experience animal migrations from a vantage point, Tanzania's Serengeti is often considered to be the main stage for this natural spectacle, making it a must for safari enthusiasts.

Accommodation and facilities:

Both destinations can offer a diverse range of accommodation, from luxurious lodges to more rustic tented camps, to suit all budgets and preferences. Kenya has a long tradition of tourism and a well-developed infrastructure able to accommodate any traveller, while Tanzania has also invested in its tourism sector, offering modern facilities in its main safari regions.

The verdict : Both countries offer a wide range of accommodation options , but Kenya may be your best bet when it comes to accessibility and variety.

Discover the culture and meet the locals:

Beyond the safaris, Kenya and Tanzania also have a unique cultural background to show off. In Kenya, you can visit Maasai villages and learn about their traditional way of life, while in Tanzania there are the bustling markets of Stone Town in Zanzibar to explore, and you can also take part in safaris on foot, walking alongside local tribes.

The verdict : Both destinations can offer rich cultural experiences, but Kenya can provide you with a deeper immersion into the lives of tribes such as the Maasai .
