If you paint en plein air, a portable easel is essential. Finding a reliable one can be tricky, as a winning model should have enough weight to provide stability as you work but also be light enough to carry out to the field. A portable easel is also ideal for painters who want to bring their own to classes or transport it to and from their studio. Save some cash and purchase a bundled easel set that comes with its own carry case—or at least, a strap and a handle. After all, finding a bag to accommodate the awkward shape of a collapsed easel can be its own challenge. We’re here to help with our picks below.

1. Meeden Painting Easel with Carrying Case

This easel collapses with ease and sets up to form a very sturdy painting support. Made of beechwood, it’s finished with brass-plated screws and firm knobs for adjusting its angle, individual legs, and height, which can reach a maximum length of 75 ½ inches. It’s great for painting large, being capable of holding canvases up to 44 inches tall. You can even position the easel to use as a flat surface. Weighing just under nine pounds, this model is also convenient to carry. It comes with a durable zippered nylon case with pockets that can be carried with a handle or via a shoulder strap.

If you often paint on small- to mid-sized canvases, consider picking up a tabletop easel. While convenient to carry, this model is quite heavy, weighing just over 16 pounds, which makes it a bit more challenging to have on your person for long distances. It also doesn’t provide that extra layer of protection that a bag does.

I researched recliners for a long time before settling on this one. I ordered the gray polyester, and the color is pretty close to the online color... The chair is beautiful...and it seems to be well made. It is wide enough for me to have my dog (I have Beagles) sit next to me, or one of my grandchildren. I am 5'6" and about 190 pounds, and the chair fits me very well. I'm not sure about the "extended footrest", because my feet hit the "extended" part, exactly where they would on the footrest on a regular recliner. My only negative point about this recliner is that it feels like it leans forward when just sitting in it or rocking. It only leans back when it is reclined. So, instead of leaning back into the backrest, it sits up straight, which is great for your posture, but not so great when you just want to kick back and relax at the end of the day. It also seems to inhibit the rocking motion slightly. I find myself using one foot to push back on the floor a bit to give me the comfort of leaning back. I guess on a positive side, if you need a chair that is easier to get out of, this is it. All in all, it's a nice chair. It looks beautiful and seems sturdy. I love the color and the design. This gate is awesome I am so happy I decided to go with this purchase it’s was actually really easy to assemble took about 10 minutes and that time would’ve been cut in half had I used the power drill! General information regarding hard cases:

A hard case will provide the highest level of protection for your bike. They are ideal when you start and finish the cycling portion of your travel from the same place. They also work great when you have the ability to ship the empty case ahead to a point where it will be needed for your next flight..  Some framebuilders offer trailer options (shown below) that work in conjunction with our hard cases for those who want to take the case along with them while touring. Towing the case solves the problem of what to do with it as well as making a great container for touring gear. Oversize cases

Some of our cases are available in a 12" oversize version but this size does not meet airline size requirements .  Although some people choose an oversize case for a single bike, we don't recommend it since there is a possibility that you will be charged for oversize luggage. It's very rare that a single bike won't fit into a 10" case. Packing a bike for the first time is like learning anything new, it takes following instructions , experimentation and practice . Packing tips are available here . Our oversize cases are designed to accommodate bicycles (typically tandems or recumbents) that won't fit in a 10" case. For tandems that won't fit in a single 10" case, we normally  recommend two 10" cases instead of using an oversize case. That way, the extra space in each case can be used for miscellaneous items and clothing and since there are normally 2 people traveling with a tandem,  you won't get charged for the second case. Since many airlines add a fee for cases that weigh over 50 pounds, be especially careful to check the weight of an oversize case before you get to the airport since it's easy to exceed the weight limit.

Construction styles

We offer three hard case construction methods to better meet the needs of our customers.  Our original USA made gray hard case, with its rugged look, has been in use now for over 10 years and it is known for its good looks, strength and durability. We rarely hear of one of these cases being damaged.  Our newest case, with butterfly latches, is made in the USA. The wide wheel spacing provides excellent stability when it's pulled on its edge. They are rugged and suitable for hard service.

Wheel configurations 

• Has wheels along the narrow edge and it pulled on its edge. 
• This configuration is best for maneuvering in tight places like airports or train stations.
• They are less stable than a side pull case especially on an uneven surface. 
• Our new Butterfly latch case is the most stable edge pull case that we offer.
• Has wheels along the long side of the case and is pulled on its wide side
• This configuration is very stable even on uneven surfaces.

Combination edge and side pull 

• Has wheels on the narrow edge and wheels on the side so it can be pulled either way. 
• Can be pulled on edge in tight places and on its side over rough terrain.

Methods o f pulling a case

• A handle is located on the side opposite of the wheels.
• The case is pulled at the side of the person pulling it.
• Some edge pull cases are pulled by a telescopic handle built into the case that extends above the case to make it convenient to to reach. These add cost and the handle increases the size of the case.
• Some edge pull cases are pulled by the carry handle located on the top if the case. These are more economical but not as easy to use as a telescopic handle. These do not increase the size of the case.

The Curious Case of Bird Fleas Infesting a Home

Fleas are blood-feeding parasites that are common on most mammals and well known for their ability to spread pathogens such as plague, tularemia, typhus, and a variety of parasites. They can bite multiple times in a feeding session and travel far and fast to find new hosts. This is what makes them so fearsome as vectors—their ability to explosively spread diseases through a community.

While it may seem like fleas will bite anything that moves, some species are so specific about which host they want that some individuals may choose to starve to death rather than accept an alternative. This may be because of specific nutritional requirements, an inability to control the immune system of other types of hosts, or behavioral differences between the host and the flea that make finding and staying with anything besides their preferred host difficult or impossible.

While approximately 94 percent of flea species prefer to feed on mammals, the remaining 6 percent specialize on birds. Research published in 2008 by a team at Brigham Young University determined through genetic analysis that it’s likely many bird-preferring species had ancestors that parasitized chipmunks and squirrels and that switching to birds is a recent evolution. One rather common group of bird fleas are those in the genus Dasypsyllus , which prefer small songbirds that build nests low to the ground. The subspecies Dasypsyllus gallinulae perpinnatus is the only known variant found in the western coastal area of the United States and, although common, it is rarely documented by scientists and public health professionals. For this reason, many entomologists can go their entire career without seeing a single bird flea.

As a vector ecologist, my job is to conduct surveillance for vector-borne diseases, monitor vector populations, and provide insect identification services for the people of San Mateo County, located just south of San Francisco, California. While home inspections are not a common part of my working day, I am occasionally called out to handle special cases. So, you can imagine my surprise when my colleagues and I responded to a bird flea infestation in a home, the details of which were reported in April 2024 in the Journal of Medical Entomology , part of a forthcoming special collection on One Health.

Our story begins in March 2023 when we received a request for service from a resident living in a condominium infested with fleas. Four people were living in the home; however, only one reported receiving bites. Seven fleas were submitted, which I identified as D.g. perpinnatus . At the time, I had only identified this species once as an incidental collection while sampling for ticks. None of us knew anything about this species, and brief consultations with other entomologists typically ended with, “The identity is correct, but how did you get these?”

Upon visiting the home, we found an abandoned bird’s nest behind a fire alarm bell in the front entryway of the residence. This nest was bagged up and removed, and we flagged for fleas in the entryway under the nest using a flannel cloth attached to a wooden dowel.

A total of 31 fleas were recovered by flagging from the front entryway of the residence, 20 were collected by the resident from indoors, and 387 were removed from the abandoned bird nest. All life stages (egg, larvae, pupa, and adult) were present in the nest, and all the adults were identified as D.g. perpinnatus .

As far as we are aware, this is the first record of a structural infestation by D.g. perpinnatus , but that statement warrants investigation: Is this indeed the first case? Or have we just not been looking? And, a more worrisome question, could bird fleas spread avian pathogens to humans?

Integrated pest management (IPM) practices encourage identifying any collected fleas to species before beginning a treatment plan. However, slide-mounting fleas for ID is time-intensive and reliant on an experienced entomologist with a good taxonomic key. It is valuable for pest control professionals (whether private pest control operators, extension staff, or other public health staff) to collaborate with experienced academic institutions and vector control agencies, but this isn’t always possible.

In our growing understanding that human health is inextricable from our environment and the animals with which we share it, we need widely available tools and training to help encourage people to learn about insect behavior and species ID. As this case study illustrates, having more entomologists available will help pest control professionals and those working on the front lines of public health perform their duties to modern IPM standards.

South Africa top court hears case questioning Zuma’s electoral eligibility

Ex-president could be disqualified from running in the most competitive polls in post-apartheid history on May 29.

South Africa’s Constitutional Court will decide on an appeal questioning former President Jacob Zuma’s eligibility to run in this month’s election, a race that could tilt the balance of the parliament and determine the country’s next leader.

The court in Johannesburg is on Friday hearing the appeal filed by the country’s election body after a lower court ruled that Zuma could run for office.

Zuma, 82, is fronting a new opposition party that has become a potential disrupter in the general election.

While his party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), is not expected to win enough votes to return the former leader to the presidency, it could cut into the vote share of the dominant governing African National Congress (ANC) party, and determine who will be the country’s next leader.

In the South African constitution, the president is elected by members of parliament.

The IEC had argued that the corruption-tainted politician should be barred from the race because of a 2021 contempt of court conviction.

Threat of violence

The eligibility case against Zuma revolves around the interpretation of a constitutional norm barring anyone sentenced to more than 12 months’ imprisonment from serving in parliament.

The ban lapses five years after the sentence is completed.

The IEC argued the provision applies to Zuma. But Zuma’s lawyers said it does not apply to the former leader, because his sentence was shortened.

Now it is up to the Constitutional Court to decide on the case, which experts say could take days.

The top court is the same body that in 2021 sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison after he refused to testify to a panel investigating financial corruption and cronyism during his presidency. The head of that panel is now the court’s chief justice.

In their filings, Zuma’s lawyers argued that he and another five judges who sat on the bench that convicted their client should recuse themselves as “tainted by bias”.

Were that to happen, the court would not have enough members left to hear the case.

Coming only weeks before what is expected to be the most competitive vote since the advent of democracy in 1994, the case has made some observers nervous.

Zuma’s jailing in 2021 triggered a wave of unrest, riots and looting that left more than 350 people dead.

There are fears, however, of a repeat of the violence, with supporters of the former leader accusing the court of being partisan.

“Zuma’s supporters have threatened violence again this year should things not go their way,” Zakhele Ndlovu, a politics lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, told the AFP news agency.

Judge: Alabama groups can sue over threat of prosecution for helping with abortion travel

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge on Monday said abortion rights advocates can proceed with lawsuits against Alabama’s attorney general over threats to prosecute people who help women travel to another state to terminate pregnancies.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson denied Attorney General Steve Marshall’s request to dismiss the case. The groups said Marshall has suggested anti-conspiracy laws could be used to prosecute those who help Alabama women obtain an abortion in another state. The two lawsuits seek a legal ruling clarifying that the state can’t prosecute people for providing such assistance.

Alabama bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy with no exceptions for rape and incest.

While Thompson did not issue a final ruling, he said the organizations “correctly contend” that the attorney general “cannot constitutionally prosecute people for acts taken within the State meant to facilitate lawful out of state conduct, including obtaining an abortion.”

“Alabama can no more restrict people from going to, say, California to engage in what is lawful there than California can restrict people from coming to Alabama to do what is lawful here. In this sense, the case is not an especially difficult call,” Thompson wrote.

Marshall has not prosecuted anyone for providing abortion assistance, but he has made statements suggesting his office would “look at” groups that provide help. Marshall’s office had asked Thompson to dismiss the lawsuit.

One lawsuit was filed by the Yellowhammer Fund. That group stopped providing financial assistance to low income persons over concerns about possible prosecution. The other suit was filed by an obstetrician and two former abortion clinics that continue to provide contraception and other health services.

Plaintiffs said Marshall’s comments have had a chilling effect on their work and made it difficult for doctors and others to know if they can make appointments and referrals for abortions out of state.

Thompson scheduled a May 15 status conference to discuss the next steps. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and handed authority on abortion law to the states, the Deep South quickly became an area of limited abortion access.

After a bumpy recovery, Steven Birnbaum returns ‘fonder of the game’

Birnbaum is scheduled to travel to his first away match Saturday against Atlanta and remain on call in case D.C. United needs defensive reinforcement.

When D.C. United captain Steven Birnbaum underwent knee surgery in early February — less than three weeks before the season opener — he figured to miss about four matches. Months passed, however, without the bearded center back, in the No. 15 black and red jersey he has worn since debuting 11 years ago, marshaling the back line.

Birnbaum had experienced setbacks in his recovery, none that required an additional procedure but significant enough to delay his return.

“It’s hard to explain,” the 33-year-old said Thursday. “The recovery just took a lot longer than I expected to feel like I was able to do soccer movements.”

After watching nine matches from the stands or home, Birnbaum joined the game-day squad April 27 against Seattle and made his 2024 debut last Saturday as a late substitute against Philadelphia — his 249th regular season appearance, ranking third in club history behind Jaime Moreno (340) and Bill Hamid (279).

Aside from the preseason opener in Saudi Arabia, Birnbaum had not appeared in a competitive setting since October. His lungs were not ready for it.

“Kind of gassing through the first five to 10 minutes,” he said with a smile.

Birnbaum is scheduled to travel to his first away match Saturday against Atlanta (3-4-3) and remain on call in case United (3-3-5) needs defensive reinforcement. Lucas Bartlett and Christopher McVey have started all season, and Matti Peltola joined the back line last week to create a three-man formation.

Birnbaum’s brief debut was “a good jumping-off point,” Coach Troy Lesesne said.

“But by no means should you expect he’s going to start the next match or play 45 minutes or 90 minutes,” Lesesne said. “We’re going to try to build him in the right way.”

Lesesne added that Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s artificial turf is not conducive to a player returning from a knee injury. He also noted the opportune timing of Birnbaum’s return as United enters a stretch of six games in 22 days, including a May 18 showdown in South Florida with Lionel Messi and league-leading Inter Miami.

“Anytime you go through surgery or any type of injury, it’s going to be an up-and-down recovery,” Birnbaum said. “This one was just a lot tougher on me than I think really anyone expected. You become fonder of the game when you’re away from it, and so you get more antsy to get back in with the group.”

Though United’s other center backs have performed well, Birnbaum’s daily presence was missed.

“When I see him coming back, it means soon I will have to give him back” the captain’s armband, top scorer Christian Benteke joked. In Birnbaum’s absence, the Belgian striker has captained the squad.

“I’m really happy because Steve is a good pro; he’s a leader,” Benteke added. “The good thing is he will have to push himself because [McVey and Bartlett] are doing well, and so now it’s a competition.”

Upon his hiring in January , Lesesne said he quickly appreciated Birnbaum’s importance to the locker room and hunger to get the organization back on track after missing the playoffs four consecutive years.

“He’s desperate to get this club into a winning position [and] be a part of a winner as he comes into the latter part of his career,” Lesesne said. “I say ‘desperate’ because he was desperate to get back to training; he’s a competitor. This guy wants to win, and that was the first impression for me and now we have that every day in training.”

After battling multiple injuries last year — and starting just 20 of 34 games — Birnbaum said he worked hard over the winter to “get my body right.”

His knee began to give him trouble before United’s preseason trip to Saudi Arabia. He played in one game there and realized “it was not going to be sustainable,” prompting an early return stateside for surgery.

“To have that setback happen with a new coach, a new general manager [ Ally Mackay ], a new look for D.C., was really tough on me because you want to make a great first impression,” Birnbaum said. “What I really wanted was to have my body healthy for the year. That was the biggest thing mentally that was frustrating: ‘Man, this has already happened? I haven’t even played a game yet.’ ”

The extended recovery, though, did allow for additional time with his wife, Jeanne, and their two young children, who, because of their father’s absence, have yet to attend a match this season.

“My wife’s been happy I’ve been home this whole time, but I’m eager to get back with the guys,” Birnbaum said. “You do a lot of bonding on these road trips. It’s my chance to kind of get to know some of the guys a little bit better … and the on-the-field stuff then comes through that.”

A U.S. soldier arrested in Russia on theft charges will be detained for at least two months and could face a five-year sentence if he’s found guilty, a Russian district court said Tuesday, amid allegations he stole from a girlfriend after following her from South Korea, where they were involved in a domestic disturbance.

The Pervomaisky District Court in Vladivostok said the American soldier—Staff Sgt. Gordon Black—was arrested last week on criminal misconduct charges and will be held in pre-trial detention until July 2, a court spokesperson told the state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

The 34-year-old Black, who is married, is charged with “secretly stealing property,” which caused the alleged victim “significant damage,” the court said.

Black—who reportedly faces up to five years in prison—traveled to Russia to visit a longtime Russian girlfriend who had moved from South Korea after the two were involved in an alleged “domestic dispute or altercation,” U.S. officials told the Associated Press.

Black did not notify his unit in South Korea he was traveling to Russia and did not receive authorization to go there, and was instead on leave to redeploy back home to Fort Cavazos, Texas, according to the officials.

The alleged victim filed a police report accusing Black of stealing money following an argument, and Black was later arrested at a local hotel after having purchased a plane ticket to return home, Reuters reported .

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s office in Vladivostok said Black’s arrest has “no relation to politics or espionage,” adding a “household crime [is suspected] in this case,” according to the Russian state-run news agency Tass.

A State Department official told ABC News the U.S. Embassy in Moscow was trying to get in touch with Black, though they have not been allowed to meet with him. The official said it’s likely Black’s detention will be extended.

Another U.S. citizen was arrested and detained in Russia earlier on Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported . Russell William Nycum was sentenced to 10 days in jail for “petty hooliganism,” after he allegedly climbed through the windows of a children’s library after getting drunk.

Black is the latest American to be detained in Russia in recent years. Last year, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained on espionage charges and faces up to 20 years in prison. Former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan was sentenced to 16 years in prison on spying charges by a Moscow court in 2020. Whelan said his trial was a “sham” and has maintained his innocence, suggesting he was set up after he was given a flash drive containing sensitive information he was unaware of. The U.S. government has defended Whelan and Gershkovich and said both have been wrongfully detained. Brittney Griner spent 10 months in a Russian prison on drug possession and smuggling charges, though the WNBA star was returned to the U.S. in a prisoner swap involving a Russian arms dealer.

Airbnb and its rivals have been working to establish a new normal since the pandemic.

Airbnb provided lacklustre guidance for a second consecutive quarter, indicating that growth in travel spending will slow further before the peak summer season kicks in. The shares were down about 7 per cent in extended trading.

Revenue for the current quarter ending in June will be $2.68 billion (€2.5 billion) to $2.74 billion, the company said in a letter to shareholders. Analysts were expecting $2.74 billion, according to Bloomberg-compiled estimates. In its statement, Airbnb blamed the earlier timing of the 2024 Easter holiday as well as currency headwinds.

Airbnb and its rivals have been working to establish a new normal since the pandemic. The industry’s recovery has been choppy, with demand growing faster in some regions and tapering off in others due to the different pace of reopening from Covid-19 restrictions. Last week, Booking.com gave worse-than-expected guidance and Expedia issued disappointing results.

Airbnb, which specialises in shared homes and vacation rentals both in urban cities and rural destinations, saw a deceleration in North American nights booked in the first quarter. It has been making an effort through its marketing to differentiate its rentals from hotels in the hopes that people travelling in groups will opt to rent homes with multiple bedrooms. The company said that bookings for groups of six or more people were the fastest growing segment in the region.

How does a global pandemic affect birthrates?

Growth in the current period for nights and experiences booked – a key industry metric – will be “relatively stable” compared with the 9.5 per cent gain it posted in the first quarter. That falls short of analysts’ expectations for a roughly 12 per cent increase. It also represents the slowest rate of growth since 2020, suggesting that overall demand has normalised after an initial post-pandemic travel boom.

The outlook overshadowed an otherwise better-than-expected report for the first quarter, which saw revenue surpass estimates, growing 18 per cent to $2.14 billion thanks to particularly strong gains in Asia and Latin America.

The company is expecting revenue growth to reaccelerate in the third quarter, as key international events like the summer Olympics in Paris and the Euro Cup in Germany are fuelling travel demand in the peak summer season.

The continued recovery in international travel has been a bright spot for the travel industry including Airbnb, whose businesses in Latin America and Asia have seen faster growth than in the US. It has also been investing more into less mature markets in those regions to drive near-term gains, including the introduction of limited-edition stays inspired by local cultural icons.

Chief executive Brian Chesky has said that the company he cofounded in 2007 is ready to expand beyond its core product after spending the past year refining existing offerings. In particular, the company has been focused on making listings more reliable and affordable for guests, as well as encouraging more people to host.

That work has been paying off. The number of active listings in the first quarter grew 15 per cent year-over-year and supply has continued to grow at a double-digit pace across all regions. That’s in spite of the company removing thousands of listings in the first quarter that did not meet guest expectations. – Bloomberg
