Celebrating over 60 years of unparalleled artistry, Alvin Ailey ®  American Dance Theater never fails to remind us of the power of dance to bring people together. These dancers dazzle with their trademark technical brilliance and passionate energy, and bring audiences to their feet at every performance.

The ground-breaking, forward-thinking company returns with new and classic works, including founder Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece  Revelations , which the New York Times  called the “Ailey gift that somehow keeps on giving.”

When Alvin Ailey and a small group of African American dancers took the stage at New York City’s 92nd Street Y on March 30, 1958, the engagement was intended to be one night only. But it turned out to be the start of a new era in the arts. Ailey created a company dedicated to enriching American modern dance heritage and preserving the uniqueness of the African American cultural experience. He became one of the trailblazers of modern dance, and the work of his company grew to encompass education, community outreach, and cultural diplomacy.

Ailey is “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.”

To date, the company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents—as well as millions more through television, film, and online. More than 270 works by over 100 choreographers have been part of the Ailey repertory. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.”

Before his untimely death in 1989, Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor as artistic director of the company, and over the next 21 years, she brought the company to unprecedented success. Jamison personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and the  New York Times  declared he “has injected the company with new life.”

Beginning January 2022, Alvin Ailey® American Dance Theater will require masks and  proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or negative COVID-19 test results for audiences ages 5+:

  • Full vaccination is defined as one dose of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) or two doses of WHO-approved mRNA vaccines (Moderna or Pfizer).
  • Proof of vaccination is a CDC vaccination card for each audience member. Physical cards or digital images (on a mobile device) will be accepted.
  • PCR (lab) test within 72 hours of the performance
  • Professionally administered rapid antigen test (not a home kit) within 6 hours of the performance

If you are unable to comply with the Ailey company’s vaccine/negative test requirements, please  contact our box office  at least 24 hours prior to the performance to request a refund.

Ticket purchasers are responsible for communicating these rules to whomever they provide tickets.

Non-compliance with these requirements will result in removal from the event without a refund.

To date, the Company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents—as well as millions more through television, film, and online. More than 270 works by over 100 choreographers have been part of the Ailey repertory. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the Company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world.” Before his untimely death in 1989, Mr. Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. Ms. Jamison, in turn, personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and  The New York Times  declared he “has injected the company with new life.”

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater gratefully acknowledges The Joan & Sandy Weill Global Ambassador Fund , which provides vital support for Ailey’s national and international tours.

About the Artists

ALVIN AILEY | FOUNDER

Alvin Ailey was born on January 5, 1931, in Rogers, Texas. His experiences of life in the rural South would later inspire some of his most memorable works. He was introduced to dance in Los Angeles by performances of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, and his formal dance training began with an introduction to Lester Horton’s classes by his friend Carmen de Lavallade. Horton, the founder of one of the first racially integrated dance companies in the United States, became a mentor for Mr. Ailey as he embarked on his professional career.

more about alvin ailey

After Horton’s death in 1953, Mr. Ailey became director of the Lester Horton Dance Theater and began to choreograph his own works. In the 1950s and 60s Mr. Ailey performed in four Broadway shows, including  House of Flowers  and  Jamaica . In 1958 he founded Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to carry out his vision of a company dedicated to enriching the American modern dance heritage and preserving the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience. He established the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center (now The Ailey School) in 1969 and formed the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble (now Ailey II) in 1974. Mr. Ailey was a pioneer of programs promoting arts in education, particularly those benefiting underserved communities. Throughout his lifetime he was awarded numerous distinctions, including the Kennedy Center Honor in 1988 in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to American culture. In 2014 he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to civil rights and dance in America. When Mr. Ailey died on December 1, 1989,  The New York Times  said of him, “you didn’t need to have known [him] personally to have been touched by his humanity, enthusiasm, and exuberance and his courageous stand for multi-racial brotherhood.”

ROBERT BATTLE | ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Robert Battle became Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in July 2011 after being personally selected by Judith Jamison, making him only the third person to head the Company since it was founded in 1958. Mr. Battle has a longstanding association with the Ailey organization. A frequent choreographer and artist-in-residence at Ailey since 1999, he has set many of his works on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ailey II, and at The Ailey School. The Company’s current repertory includes his ballets  Ella ,  For Four, In/Side ,  Love Stories  finale,  Mass,  and  Unfold.  In addition to expanding the Ailey repertory with works by artists as diverse as Ronald K. Brown, Rennie Harris, Jessica Lang, and Wayne McGregor, Mr. Battle has also instituted the New Directions Choreography Lab to help develop the next generation of choreographers.

MORE ABOUT ROBERT BATTLE

Mr. Battle’s journey to the top of the modern dance world began in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, Florida. He showed artistic talent early and studied dance at a high school arts magnet program before moving on to Miami’s New World School of the Arts, under the direction of Daniel Lewis and Gerri Houlihan, and finally to the dance program at The Juilliard School, under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy, where he met his mentor, Carolyn Adams. He danced with The Parsons Dance Company from 1994 to 2001, and also set his choreography on that company starting in 1998. Mr. Battle then founded his own Battleworks Dance Company, which made its debut in 2002 in Düsseldorf, Germany, as the U.S. representative to the World Dance Alliance’s Global Assembly. Battleworks subsequently per-formed extensively at venues, including The Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, American Dance Festival, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Mr. Battle was honored as one of the “Masters of African-American Choreography” by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2005, and he received the prestigious Statue Award from the Princess Grace Foundation-USA in 2007. He is a recipient of the 2021  Dance Magazine  Award and has honorary doctorates from The University of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, and Fordham University. Mr. Battle was named a 2015 visiting fellow for The Art of Change, an initiative by the Ford Foundation. During the 1970s and 80s she appeared as a guest artist with ballet companies all over the world, starred in the hit Broadway musical  Sophisticated Ladies , and formed her own company, The Jamison Project. She returned to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1989 when Mr. Ailey asked her to succeed him as Artistic Director. Ms. Jamison’s autobiography,  Dancing Spirit , was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and published in 1993. In 2004, under Ms. Jamison’s artistic directorship, her idea of a permanent home for the Ailey company was realized and named after beloved chairman emerita Joan Weill. Ms. Jamison continues to dedicate herself to asserting the prominence of the arts in our culture and she remains committed to promoting the significance of the Ailey legacy—using dance as a medium for honoring the past, celebrating the present, and fearlessly reaching into the future.

BENNETT RINK | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Bennett Rink became Executive Director of Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation in 2013. Mr. Rink first joined Ailey as Manager of Special Events in 1994, became Development Director in 1998, and then worked as Senior Director of Development and External Affairs from 2007 to 2012. In his tenure overseeing Ailey’s development, Mr. Rink led a $75 million capital campaign supporting Ailey’s first permanent home, The Joan Weill Center for Dance which opened in 2005, and established an endowment to support major program areas. When the Company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, Mr. Rink supervised an 18-month celebration, including events, promotions, collaborations, and special performances, bringing public awareness of the Ailey organization to new heights. Mr. Rink also oversaw “The Next Step Campaign,” which grew the organization’s endowment to $50 million. As Executive Director, Mr. Rink launched a five-year strategic plan in 2014 to realize Robert Battle’s creative vision, expand Ailey’s educational offerings, and enhance technology to extend the reach of the organization. Central to the plan has been the expansion of The Joan Weill Center for Dance, which attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year. In the fall of 2017, Ailey unveiled the Center’s Elaine Wynn and Family Education Wing, providing much-needed additional studios and classroom space to meet the growing demand for Ailey’s programs. The building now comprises 87,000 square feet and is the largest destination for dance in New York City.  Mr. Rink also conceived The Campaign for Ailey’s Future, a $50 million initiative to support the Center’s expansion and the ongoing implementation of other long-range strategic priorities. During Mr. Rink’s tenure, the Company deepened its presence in New York City by establishing a spring season at Lincoln Center to complement its New York City Center winter season, while also extending its role as America’s “Cultural Ambassador to the World” with tours to Africa, Europe, and South America. In order to reach audiences beyond live performances, the Company has broadened its commitment to creating film and digital content, including its first-ever theatrical movie release as part of  Lincoln Center at the Movies: Great American Dance . Mr. Rink is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a BFA in theater.

2022 Programming Announced for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Published: december 17, 2021, please note that all programs are subject to change., program a- celebrating robert battle’s 10 th  anniversary, celebrating the 10th anniversary of robert battle as artistic director., mass by robert battle.

“The genesis of this work came to me while seeing Verdi’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall,” explains Robert Battle. “I found myself utterly absorbed in the intricacies of how the choir moved as a unit and then organized and condensed themselves in the pews. The juxtaposition of the choir themselves constrained by space while their voices traveled through the hall was fascinating. I began creating the movement you will see in Mass by deconstructing the chorus. I wanted an original score and was familiar with John Mackey from previous works I had created, making him a clear choice for the composer.”

The ballet was originally created for a “New Dances” program at The Juilliard School in November 2004. The New York Times’ review of the performance declared: “Mr. Battle, the youngest choreographer, has recently made a name for himself with original rapid-fire movement and unexpected imagery. The Juilliard Percussion Ensemble, at the rear of the stage, provided the sound, growing in intensity. Mr. Battle took the senior class along the same path. The dancers scooted around, huddled and worked themselves up wonderfully into astounding vigor. The ritual ended with the leader throwing himself to the floor and a group flying out into the wings.”

In/Side  by Robert Battle

Set to Nina Simone’s haunting rendition of the Oscar-nominated song “Wild is the Wind,” In/Side offers audiences an intimate look at a man’s most private struggles.

Artistic Director and choreographer Robert Battle noted that it was Alvin Ailey himself who said that the greatest works of art are the most personal. With this solo, he aimed to evoke a sense of openness that he says “reminds us that we’re not alone in our feelings of sadness and isolation and gives us a connection to someone else.”

Dancer Samuel Lee Roberts, on whom Battle created the work, described it as “one of the most exhilarating, exhausting, and frightening things I have ever done. I had never had to be so completely vulnerable in such a public space.” But that honesty and expressiveness are what draw both dancers and audiences to Battle’s works. “The thing I love most about performing his work is the way the drama drives the dance,” explained Roberts. “It’s never just steps and shapes.”

Ella  by Robert Battle

Originally created as a solo, this high-energy comical dance was reinvented as a duet by the Ailey company for its December 2016 opening night gala benefit, “An Evening of Ailey and Jazz” – in anticipation of the legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial in April 2017.

Using a live concert recording of Fitzgerald performing the song “Airmail Special,” Ella matches the iconic singer’s virtuosic scatting with lightning-fast, articulated movement in an irresistible tour-de-force that leaves audiences (and the dancers) breathless.

For Four  by Robert Battle (Chicago Premiere)

Take four amazing Ailey dancers and add in Wynton Marsalis’ delicious jazz score – written in 4/4 time – and you’ll understand why Robert Battle cheekily titled this exuberant short work For Four . Originally created as the opening video segment for the 2021 Ailey Spring Gala virtual broadcast, Battle used the pent-up energy of a world that had largely been cooped up for the prior 15 months during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Dance really is about being close together,” said Mr. Battle. “When we were in the studio making this dance, you could feel the electricity of what we did together, the way we felt so free to express ourselves in the way that we do, and so For Four is a manifestation of that expression.”

In its review of the Gala, The New York Times observed: “With all its spinning and attitudinizing… [ For Four ] can seem like simple release. But there’s also a darker, more desperate undertone, a hint of having to perform…. Something more than pent-up energy is being expressed.”

Unfold by Robert Battle (New Production)

Artistic Director Robert Battle’s sensuous, swirling duet evokes the tenderness and ecstasy in Gustave Charpentier’s aria. With its fluid grace, this gem exemplifies the choreographer’s skill for nuanced gesture and vivid imagery.

Takademe  by Robert Battle

Robert Battle’s bravura work mixes humor and high-flying movement in a savvy deconstruction of Indian Kathak dance rhythms. Clear shapes and propulsive jumps mimic the vocalized syllables of Sheila Chandra’s syncopated score.

For Battle, the work represents his modest beginnings as a dance-maker and reminds him of how far he’s come. He created  Takademe while still a dancer with the Parsons Dance Company, in a living room in Queens, New York. “Most dances have a lot to do with restrictions and problem-solving,” he explains. “And one of the problems was that we didn’t have a lot of space, so the dance stays very stationary. But then when we finally got studio space…the movement travels on a long diagonal. Freedom. I’m always reminded of that as a metaphor for where I am now with Ailey, where there is a remarkable amount of space.”

It’s unlikely that the young choreographer in that Queens apartment could have imagined the distinguished company he’d find himself in when critics embraced his work.

Love Stories finale  by Robert Battle

2004’s Love Stories was a collaboration among Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison, choreographer Rennie Harris, and Artistic Director Robert Battle. Inspired by the African concept of “Sankofa”, which teaches that “we don’t know where we’re going unless we know where we have been”, this extraordinary ballet celebrates the traditions of African American dance and the rich heritage of Alvin Ailey.

In the ballet’s joyful finale, being presented as a standalone piece this season, Battle portrays a luminous future built on the lessons and legacy of the past. The New York Times called it “astoundingly well danced… a breakthrough in creative choreography” and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution proclaimed, “It’s a party!”

Revelations by Alvin Ailey

Using African American spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs and holy blues, Alvin Ailey’s Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.

More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience, with audiences cheering, singing along and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked” to the rousing “Wade in the Water” and the triumphant finale, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.”

Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the African American cultural heritage—“sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.” This enduring classic is a tribute to that tradition, born out of the choreographer’s “blood memories” of his childhood in rural Texas and the Baptist Church. But since its premiere in 1960, the ballet has been performed continuously around the globe, transcending barriers of faith and nationality, and appealing to universal emotions, making it the most widely-seen modern dance work in the world.

Program A will be performed on Wednesday, March 2 @ 7:30PM and Saturday, March 5 @ 8PM .

Program b- all ailey, the river (excerpts) by alvin ailey (new production).

By turns muscular and lyrical,  The River  is a sweeping full-company work that suggests tumbling rapids and meandering streams on a journey to the sea. Ailey’s allegory of birth, life and rebirth abounds with water references, from the spinning “Vortex” solo to the romantic “Lake” duet, and from the powerful “Falls” quartet to the joyful “Giggling Rapids.” The choreography demonstrates Ailey’s admiration for classical ballet, but retains the modern and jazz influences found in all his work. “ The River  shows Mr. Ailey at his inventive best,” declared The New York Times.

The grandeur of the dancing is matched by the music, which was Duke Ellington’s first symphonic score written for dance. Ailey and Ellington collaborated closely on the piece.

Former Associate Artistic Director Masazumi Chaya, the foremost living expert on Ailey’s repertory, believes that the ballet feels fresh each time around because “each audience member can make a story of their own from  The River .” Alvin was very clever; he created something that can be applied to one’s entire life — birth, a relationship with a child, or even one’s impression of a flower. It is what the audience makes of it. It is what it means to the individual.”

This new production features costumes newly designed for the first time since the 1970s.

Blues Suite by Alvin Ailey

Blues Suite  is the ballet that launched the sensational Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958.  What is extraordinary is that Alvin Ailey was just 27 years old when the dance premiered and it was only the sixth ballet that he had choreographed.  Blues Suite  is often documented as Mr. Ailey’s first masterpiece, where he had found his own miraculous voice as a creative artist presenting real people on the concert dance stage, defining his choreographic genius.

As Jennifer Dunning wrote in her book  Alvin Ailey: A Life in Dance , “[ Blues Suite ] is set in a ‘sporting house.’ The characters are the men and women who frequent the place, drinking, dancing, and flirting to the music of the blues over the course of a night that ends with the early morning sounds of a train and church bells.”

The New York Times  adds: “Created two years before the first version of  Revelations , it has often been described as that spiritual work’s secular counterpart, a representation of the Saturday night sinning that precedes the Sunday churchgoing… hailed for its social observation, for putting ‘real people’ onstage, characters from the milieu of Ailey’s Southern childhood, then underrepresented.”

Reflections in D  by Alvin Ailey (New Production)

Alvin Ailey originally created this strong yet serene solo in 1962. The ballet is a stunning, masterful expression of Duke Ellington’s music, performed by the formidable Ailey dancers.

Pas de Duke (Excerpts) By Alvin Ailey (New Production)

Pas de Duke  is Alvin Ailey’s spirited modern dance translation of a classical pas de deux, originally created in 1976 as a showcase for Judith Jamison and Mikhail Baryshnikov. She was a reigning star of modern dance; he was one of the world’s most famous ballet dancers, having defected from the Soviet Union two years earlier. Ailey made brilliant use of the dancers’ physical and stylistic differences, crafting an elegant, flirtatious work that showed off their exuberance and virtuosity as they engaged in a playful game of one-upmanship.

The work is comprised of five solos and duets that require extraordinary technical facility, flawless timing, and strong acting skills. Since its premiere, it has been performed by generations of dancers who have each put their own unique twist on the choreography, and it has stood the test of time in part for how perfectly it captures the timeless sophistication of Duke Ellington’s jazz music.  The New York Times  has praised it as “one of those special dances that lives in new ways with each new set of performers.”

Revelations  by Alvin Ailey

Program b will be performed on thursday, march 3 @ 7:30pm and saturday, march 5 @ 2pm ., program c- lazarus, lazarus by rennie harris.

In the Company’s first two-act ballet, acclaimed hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris completes a trilogy of works—including past Ailey audience favorites Exodus and Home —with this hour-long work inspired by the life and times of Mr. Ailey.

With Lazarus , Harris connects past and present in a powerful work that addresses the racial inequities America faced when Mr. Ailey founded this company in 1958 and still faces today.

Program C will be performed on Friday, March 4 @ 7:30PM and Sunday March 6 @3PM .

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (December 21, 2021) – Kimmel Cultural Campus Presents Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as the Company’s unparalleled artistry returns to the stage and Philadelphia at the Academy of Music on Friday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 29 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, January 30, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.

Renowned for celebrating the human spirit through the African American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the

Kimmel Cultural Campus after a sold-out engagement at the Campus’ Academy of Music in 2019. Marking a decade of leading the Company forward, Artistic Director Robert Battle will present Ailey’s extraordinary dancers in exciting premieres and beloved classics, including Ailey’s seminal work, the American masterpiece Revelations.

“The arts are essential to the human experience, giving voice to thoughts and ideas that words alone cannot,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Artistic Director Robert Battle - celebrating ten years at Ailey's helm - beautifully exemplify the power of the arts as a catalyst for change. We are delighted to welcome Ailey back in their historic 60th year, where we celebrate anew their important role as powerful storytellers and boundary breakers.”

Deeply committed to the health and safety of guests, artists, and staff and proudly certified by GBAC, the gold standard for infection prevention programs, the Kimmel Cultural Campus is requiring masks to be worn at all times, as well as proof of vaccination for those over 12. Guests under 12 will be required to show a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours of the event.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents.  Presenting more than 235 works by over 90 choreographers, including 79 by Alvin Ailey, Mr. Ailey's mission was to present important works of the past, commission new ones, and provide a platform for diverse voices.

A trailblazing visionary and a recipient of this nation’s highest honors, Alvin Ailey’s resonant biography is explored in Jamila Wignot’s powerful AILEY documentary opening the 36th season of PBS  American Masters  with a national television broadcast premiere on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at 9 p.m.( check local listings ),  pbs.org/ailey  and the  PBS Video app .  Heralded as a must-see at the Sundance Film Festival, a critic’s pick at Tribeca Film Festival, and now receiving Oscar buzz, the film is told through Ailey’s own words, along with interviews with those close to him, and features evocative archival footage and rarely seen historic performances.

Before his untimely death in 1989, Alvin Ailey named Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. Ms. Jamison, in turn, personally selected Robert Battle to succeed her in 2011, and The New York Times declared he “has injected the company with new life.”

In 2020, the Ailey company reinvented the way it reaches audiences globally by creating Ailey All Access, a series of online offerings that has brought dance to 121 countries, including free streaming of full-length ballets from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey Extension dance and fitness classes, conversations, and original short films. Ailey All Access won Time Out New York’s “Time In” Archive Treasure award for best archival streaming series.  From December 22 – 28, Ailey will be sharing the gift of Holiday Revelations with a free first-ever broadcast of the #ReunitedWeDance Opening Night Gala , filmed earlier this month at New York City Center, viewable via Ailey All Access , YouTube and Facebook .

Other featured performances on the Kimmel Cultural Campus include STOMP (December 28, 2021 – January 2, 2022, Merriam Theater) and PHILADANCO! RE (April 22 – 24 , 2022, Perelman Theater).

Review from the The Guardian

“No company in the world has so intimate a relationship with a single work as Alvin Ailey does with Revelations” The Guardian

Revelations - Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

alvin ailey tour 2022 europe

Now more than ever, the world needs the power of dance

Revelations  fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul. Alvin Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the cultural heritage of the African-American—“sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.” This enduring classic is a tribute to that heritage and to Ailey’s genius. Using African-American traditional spirituals, this suite fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Leaps Back Onto The Paramount Stage

Every performance concludes with Ailey's iconic American masterpiece Revelations.

pixeltracker

With their trademark technical brilliance and passionate artistry, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Seattle for performances at The Paramount Theatre on March 26 and 27 with a variety of new and classic works, including Alvin Ailey 's American masterpiece Revelations.

Paramount audiences will be treated to an All Ailey and a Battle 10th Anniversary program, which includes the Seattle premiere of Artistic Director Robert Battle 's work For Four.

"I am deeply humbled to have led this seminal company for a decade, joined by incomparable dancers and choreographers," Battle said. "It's been a journey of discovery extending from the powerful works of our founder, to the important voices of today-an ongoing dance dialogue that shines a light on the strength and resilience of our common humanity around the world."

For the Saturday and Sunday matinees, the Battle 10th Anniversary program features a new production of Battle's Unfold. This sensuous, swirling duet evokes the tenderness and ecstasy in Gustave Charpentier 's aria "Depuis Le Jour" sung by legendary soprano Leontyne Price . Audiences will be treated to the Pacific Northwest premiere of For Four , capturing the pent-up energy of a world cooped up during the pandemic, and set to a Wynton Marsalis jazz score written in 4/4 time. Battle's dynamic works Mass, In/Side , Ella , Takademe , and Love Stories (finale) round-out the evening with music by greats such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder .

Saturday evening's All Ailey program includes Blues Suite , the founding choreographer's original masterpiece that helped launch the company in 1958. Viewers will experience Reflections in D and Pas de Duke , which celebrate the musical genius of eminent American composer Duke Ellington . A modern-dance translation of a ballet dance for two, Pas de Duke honors two of the most renowned dancers in the world, Judith Jamison and Mikhail Baryshnikov . Reflections in D highlights both Ellington's masterful expression, and the grace of the male dancer in solo performance.

All performances conclude with Ailey's Revelations , acclaimed around the world for sending hearts soaring and lifting audiences to their feet. Since its debut in 1960, Revelations has been seen by more people than any other modern dance work. Audiences remember the powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music that evoke determination, hope, and transcendence. Springing from the choreographer's childhood memories of the south and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of African Americans and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

" Alvin Ailey 's vision opened the door for generations of artists to use dance to inspire, unite, and enlighten," Battle said. "Despite twists and turns on the road we have all traveled together, we are excited to be returning to our Seattle home at The Paramount Theatre while finding new ways to share artistry that renews our spirit of courage, hope, and joy."

STG has been the presenter of record for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater since 1996. In addition to the company's powerful performances at the Paramount, the impact of this group in Seattle has reverberated through residencies, master classes, lecture-demonstrations and AileyCamp-a free summer program for middle-school students-90 percent of whom identify as Black, Mixed Race, or as People of Color.

"After an evening of watching Ailey, you will leave the theater and still be thinking about what you witnessed the next day," said Shawn Roberts who leads STG AileyCamp. "It's rare that we get to see such a diverse group of beautiful dancers on stage doing what they love, inspiring all of us in the audience toward greatness."

Tickets start at $25. Season tickets on sale May 6. Individual shows on sale June 17.

Individual Tickets Season Tickets (Save 10-15% per show)

Pre-show talk: Artistic Advisor Michael Uthoff at 6:30 p.m., Sep. 20 and 21.

Audiences will delight in a feast for the eyes as four new works premiere on Yardley Hall stage. For this festival of contemporary and modern dance, the Midwest Trust Center has enlisted four choreographers to create original works for four local dance companies to perform at the world premieres. This year, New Dance Partners is excited to welcome a new partner — the Regina Klenjoski Dance Company, Wichita's premier professional dance company!

The collaborative partners are:

  • The Kansas City Ballet, working with Peter Chu
  • Owen/Cox Dance Group, working with Alexander Anderson
  • Störling Dance Theater, working with Jacqulyn Buglisi
  • Regina Klenjoski Dance Company, working with Kia S. Smith

Peter Chu (he/him) is an award-winning multifaceted movement artist. Born in the Bronx and raised in Cocoa Beach, Chu's interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine was a gateway to a deeper understanding of his Chinese identity. Being raised by his mother, a music therapist, profoundly shaped his rhythmic and musical approach to creating. Chu began his dance training as a competitive gymnast and nurtured his artistry at Dussich Dance Studio. He was a BFA student at The Juilliard School and awarded the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreography upon graduation. Chu's career spans over three decades. He has performed with renowned dance companies such as Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Crystal Pite's Kidd Pivot, EZdanza, Aszure Barton and Artists, and Celine Dion's A New Day. Chu has also choreographed for Ballet Augsburg, Backhaus Dance, Charlotte Ballet, Cirque du Soleil, DART Dance Company, Gibney Dance Company, Giordano Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) Summer Intensive, Orlando Ballet Theatre, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and more. In 2008, Chu formed his project-based company, chuthis., which combines innovative lighting and sound with live contemporary movement. He takes great pride in chuthis., where he explores the deepest parts of his identity and artistry as a director, choreographer, and educator. Chu's accolades include receiving the 2010 A.C.E. Capezio Award and being selected as the 2008 choreographer for the Perry-Mansfield New Works Festival. In 2018, he received the Harvard Blogett Award for Distinguished Artist for his creative process and piece at the Theater, Dance, and Media Department at Harvard University. Chu has also served as Rehearsal Director for Nederlands Dans Theater 2 and Guest Rehearsal Director for NDT1. Currently based in Cocoa Beach, Florida, Chu travels frequently for freelance choreographic commissions and teaching experiences. He has looked forward to Cincinnati Ballet and Kansas City Ballet commissions in 2024. Chu's dynamic artistry and dedication to pushing the physical bounds of dance make him a highly respected and sought-after artist in the industry.

Alexander Anderson (@zanderander) is a South Florida native. He attended the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts and upon graduation, was accepted to The Juilliard School. During his time at Juilliard, he performed works by renowned choreographers such as Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Pina Baush, and Jiri Kylian, among others. Anderson’s early choreographic creations were selected for “Choreographic Honors” and featured at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. He was also the recipient of the Dizzy Feet Foundation Scholarship Award and the 2013 Princess Grace Foundation Scholarship Award. Upon graduating from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance in 2014, Anderson joined Nederlands Dans Theater 2, followed by the esteemed Nederlands Dans Theater 1 in 2017. In 2019, Anderson won critical acclaim for his performance in Crystal Pite’s “Solo Echo,” Dance Europe Magazine’s critic’s choice for “Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer.” In 2020, he joined the Gibney Dance Company as an Artistic Associate. In his final year with the organization in 2022, Anderson was named the Inaugural Choreographic Fellow and provided resources to premiere a choreographic work for the company’s Gibney Fellow program. While currently residing in New York City, he has served on the faculty of the Ailey Fordham BFA (Professional Division), Peridance, Steps On Broadway, Gibney Dance, School of American Ballet (SAB), and ABT’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. Most recently, Anderson received choreographic commissions at Earl Mosley’s Diversity of Dance, Peridance (Youth Ensemble), Ballet Austin II, Houston Contemporary Dance Company, Buglisi Dance Theater, SFDanceworks, Alvin Ailey BFA Fordham, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago for their Create Summer Intensive in 2024. He is thrilled to be a part of New Dance Partners for the 2024 season.

Jacqulyn Buglisi (Cofounder/Artistic Director, Buglisi Dance Theatre (BDT)) In her five-decade career, Jacqulyn Buglisi has made an indelible impact on the field of dance. She is the recipient of the 2024 Martha Hill Award, the 2022 Juilliard President’s Medal, presented by President Damian Woetzel for her leadership as a “model of citizen artistry,” and a 2020 Bessie Award for the 9/11 Table of Silence Project performance ritual and Call to Action for Peace, coproduced by Lincoln Center and streamed around the globe in 235 countries/territories. Buglisi cofounded BDT in 1993 following an illustrious career as a principal dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Renowned for highly visual, imagistic dances, her repertoire of more than 100 ballets is archived in the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and includes commissions for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Richmond Ballet, The Joyce Theater, The Juilliard School’s Emerging Modern Masters, University of Hartford/The Hartt School, and the Flamenco Festival at Sadler’s Wells (London) and New York City Center. Her ballet, Sospiri, performed in 2023 at Dance St. Louis’ Spring to Dance Festival, had its premiere in the 1989 Martha Graham Dance Company NYC Center season. A master teacher of Graham technique for 50 years, Buglisi is Chair of the Modern Department at the Ailey/ Fordham BFA program, teaches at the Martha Graham School, served on the faculty of Juilliard, and has held residencies and workshops at Yale, SUNY Purchase, Chautauqua Institution, UC Santa Barbara, Aspen Music Festival, and Marymount Manhattan College. Among her many honors are Artistic Director’s Council Chair, Dance/USA Board of Trustees, Advisory Boards of Kaatsbaan Cultural Park and vildwerk., Fini Italian International Lifetime Achievement Award, Kaatsbaan International Playing Field Award, Fiorello LaGuardia Award for Excellence in Dance, National Endowment for the Arts choreographer fellowships and grants, and inclusion in the Oral History Project of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, NYPL, due for release in 2024.

Kia S. Smith is a Chicago native and founder of South Chicago Dance Theatre. She was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch for 2024” and her recent choreographic commissions include Southeast Missouri State University, Chautauqua Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Giordano Dance Chicago, Houston Contemporary Dance Company, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Western Michigan University, Chicago Repertory Ballet, Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company and Madison Ballet. In 2018, she received the inaugural Young and Ambitious Entrepreneurship Award from the Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League and was chosen by the New York City-based Stage Director’s and Choreographers Foundation as a member of the national Observership class. In 2021, Smith received a 3Arts Make A Wave award and was an Ann & Weston Hicks Choreographic Fellow at the renowned Jacobs Pillow. She was a 2022 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Awardee and a participant in the Artist in Residence “AIR” Program at the Cliff Dwellers (Chicago). In 2023, Smith premiered her first evening-length work, “Memoirs of Jazz in the Alley,” for South Chicago Dance Theatre, presented by the Auditorium Theater of Chicago. After the premiere of Memoirs, See Chicago Dance lauded “Smith’s first evening-length work is a ‘tour de force,’ a sensory immersion into this artists’ creative wellsprings.” She is a member of the International Association of Blacks in Dance, where she received the Joan Myers Brown Artist Development Fund scholarship and was a 2018 invited panelist for “Women of Color Arts Leaders.” She was recently named a rising star by Chicago Magazine, and “Player of the Moment” in the category of dance for New City Magazine's annual “50 Players List” in 2023. She is thrilled to be participating in New Dance Partners and working with Regina Klenjoski Dance!
