Theater Review: STOMP (National Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: STOMP (National Tour)

in Theater-Los Angeles , Tours

STILL BANGING FOR THE BUCKS

The incredibly basic concept behind  Stomp , a phenom now in its third decade, remains: “Make a rhythm out of anything we can get our hands on that makes a sound.” (Luke Cresswell, co-founder/director). The result: four global productions, including permanent venues in New York and London—and the rousing tour now playing the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

stomp-1

The detonations of joy that make  Stomp  crash and bang both delight and deafen audiences with beats that rival your heart’s and pulsation that, whether from thumped cigarette packs, human chests, clashing garbage lids, or industrial drums, slowly feels universal and non-negotiable. If for one morbid minute you might measure an entertainment by its D.F.D. (distance from death),  Stomp  is as alive as it gets or a crowd can process.

stomp-2

In a non-stop 105 minutes, the eight “stompers”—six guys and two gals–combine self-made percussion sections, inevitable and irresistible movement given the rhythms, and sight gags galore. (It’s not all lockstep uniformity; the players’ differences surface along with the awesome simultaneity of metallic music.)

stomp-3

Like the break-dancing of the 80s, the source for  Stomp  can still be found on street stoops and back alleys all over our inner cities. The 1995 origin was street performances in the U.K.: Youth, with energy to burn and boredom to improvise, turned found objects into sound objects. Household goods or industrial discards–it’s all grist for the  Stomp mill (and the stuff changes with the show)–tapping shopping carts, synchronized stiff-bristle brooms, or wooden staffs suggesting medieval combat.

stompstevemcnicholas1

It’s all about implements, not instruments. Indeed, the only percussion makers not used are traditional ones–snare or kettle drums, xylophones, chimes or cymbals. Here the preferred mode requires nothing less than hub caps, inner tubes, newspapers, dustbins, mops, radiator hoses, plumbing pipes, paint cans, kitchen sinks, or just slap-happy clapping. No melodies connect non-existent notes, but the rhythmic variations are surprisingly complex as well as contagious.

stompstevemcnicholas2

It’s a triumph of blue-collar resourcefulness, this ability to turn objects into sounds, sounds into rhythms, and rhythms into galvanic excitement to the last row of a packed house. It’s like O.C.D. or A.D.D. put to good use. Even anger that might go into guns is turned into a ritualistic rivalry.

stompstevemcnicholas21

Plus throughout the romp of  Stomp —and particularly at the end—opportunities abound for the audience to test their hand-eye coordination to the max, both in volume and rhythm. You can’t fight the beat anyway: Trying to match the stompers’ percussive patterns tells you just how much practice went into the feats of their feet and the discipline of so much organized noise.

Interestingly, however frenetic the performers’ hands and feet, their faces remain impassive, like Irish step-dancers who seem to force every ounce of energy and concentration right down their legs and into their feet. It’s as if they don’t want to show how much fun they’re having. That’s our job and we couldn’t want it more.

‘Stomp’ Turns 25. Here Are 10 Things You Didn’t Know About It.

There’s more to the show than banging on a can. Ask George Lucas, Hillary Clinton — and the performer who’s been doing it for 20 years.

stomp the tour

By Sopan Deb

One man’s trash really can be another man’s treasure. At least that’s the lesson you might take from “Stomp,” the durable New York-based stage show that has become a long-running institution in a city where sticking power can be hard to come by.

About to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its New York premiere, “Stomp” has endured, not thanks to high-priced sets and effects, but from wielding everyday objects like brooms, garbage cans and wooden poles to create a wordless percussive explosion onstage. And let’s not forget the 150 or so performers who have smacked their way in and out of its cast. (On March 3, some alumni will join the current cast in the two performances, followed by a private party.)

“Stomp” is the brainchild of Luke Cresswell, 55, and Steve McNicholas, 63, who still maintain creative control. (Blue Man Group, another downtown mainstay, was sold to Cirque du Soleil in 2017.) And while they have expressed interest in branching out — in 1997, Mr. McNicholas told the Times , “We’re kind of trapped, because we don’t feel we can walk away from it” — “Stomp” has come to define their lives.

They started working together in the early 1980s, creating a one-off in their hometown Brighton, England, called “Romance Is Not Dead” that they performed on the day of the royal wedding of Charles and Diana as counterprogramming.

stomp the tour

Later, they busked on the streets outside the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in a band called Pookiesnackenburger. Mr. Cresswell described their early music in an interview as “very eclectic, punky, thrashy, scratchy,” and with “lots of running around.”

The band eventually split up, but Mr. Cresswell and Mr. McNicholas formed a new troupe: an ensemble of eight performers that made its debut as “Stomp” at the festival in 1991.

Mr. Cresswell had been the band’s percussionist; since he could only carry a few small drums, he began improvising on the street, which meant he would use surrounding objects as well. “We quickly learned how much the audience enjoyed that kind of experimentation,” Mr. McNicholas said.

After three years of international touring, Mr. Cresswell and Mr. McNicholas brought the act to New York where it has never left the Orpheum Theater in the East Village. Along the way, “Stomp” launched several touring companies, appeared on late night television, filmed an HBO special and collaborated with A-listers.

There have been bumps. In 2010, a national tour of “Pandemonium: The Lost and Found Orchestra,” another sound-centered show from Mr. Cresswell and Mr. McNicholas, was canceled after less than three weeks of performances.

But “Stomp” itself has become part of pop culture and an unqualified success, which hasn’t fazed the founding duo. “We’re British and we live in England so we’re quite reserved,” said Mr. McNicholas. “We’re quite used to people telling us that we’re nothing special.”

As the show celebrates a quarter century in New York, where a spokeswoman said it has grossed about $100 million, here are 10 things you might not know about “Stomp.”

1. The founders used to open for Madness.

In the early 1980s, Pookiesnackenburger was a supporting act for Madness at the Dominion Theater in London. Yes, that Madness, as in the guys who earwormed “Our house in the middle of the street” into an entire generation of unsuspecting British teenagers.

“They once described us as their favorite group,” Mr. McNicholas said.

The connection has lasted. Mr. Cresswell and Mr. McNicholas helped orchestrate a theatrical launch show for Madness’s 2009 album, “The Liberty of Norton Folgate.”

2. Sometimes things go overboard. Literally.

“Stomp” props might seem widely available. But Mr. Cresswell said that everyday objects, depending on where they’re made, make different sounds. He and Mr. McNicholas have the props shipped from Britain by boat.

On one voyage in the late 1990s, a freak wave hit a boat carrying “Stomp” trash cans. The cargo box carrying the cans sank to the bottom of the North Sea.

3. Still, you better have storage space.

“Stomp” has used a total of 13,000 poles, 5,200 boxes of tissues, and 52,000 candles during its New York run.

And for when the drummers have suffered injuries: 7,800 Ace bandages.

4. The show was responsible for Jar Jar Binks (Sort of).

In the late 1990s, George Lucas was looking to cast “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace,” the highly anticipated prequel to the franchise. He had seen “Stomp” on the West Coast.

“They were looking for someone really musical and with rhythm,” Mr. Cresswell recalled.

Mr. Lucas and the casting director, Robin Gurland, invited several “Stomp” cast members to audition. Ahmed Best got the job — as Jar Jar Binks, who ended up being one of the most reviled characters in “Star Wars” history.

5. The Times name-checked John Cage.

In the original 1994 review, the critic Stephen Holden wrote: “One person who would probably have given ‘Stomp’ his stamp of approval is John Cage. Not only does the show demonstrate with an entrancing charm the music to be found in everyday objects, it does so at a relatively modest volume.”

Cage, who died two years before “Stomp” debuted in New York, was the influential avant-garde composer who thrived on defying convention, and urged other artists to do the same.

6. Paul Simon played along.

The “Stomp” creators have had plenty of celebrity collaborators, from Bette Midler (the roots of the show are clear in a pre-“Stomp” segment from her “Mondo Beyondo Show” ) to the vaudevillian Bill Irwin (on “The Late Show With David Letterman” in 1997 ).

The founders’ favorite appearance, they said, was with Paul Simon and Jimmy Fallon , performing the Simon and Garfunkel hit “Cecilia” on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” in 2011.

7. One performer has been in the show for almost half his life.

Carlos Thomas, 42, is one of the longest running cast members, having made his debut 20 years ago.

He was more prepared for his audition than most prospective performers, having grown up with a single mother who couldn’t afford to buy him instruments.

“To practice rhythm, I would make drums out of pots and pans,” Mr. Thomas said in an interview. “In high school, I would be the guy who would take the desk, chair and chalk on the chalkboard and go ‘Chooka-chooka-chooka.’ I’d make music out of everything in the classroom.”

8. It can really be a family business.

In 2015, Daniela and Tom Isenschmid bought out an entire “Stomp” show in London so they could make the performance the main attraction at their wedding reception.

9. It can also be a tough business.

“Stomp” auditions occur once every two or three years. They are essentially open calls.

One time, a dancer brought her boyfriend to an audition in London. The boyfriend watched the workshop through a window.

“We said, ‘Come in, come in.’ And he came in, and he was great,” Mr. Cresswell said.

His girlfriend didn’t make the ensemble. Paul Bend did, and has been a “Stomp” cast member since 2001. The couple is no longer together.

10. The founders know how to celebrate.

In 1999, Mr. Cresswell and Mr. McNicholas were planning to mark the millennium scuba diving off the Micronesian island Yap, until they received a call from the office of Hillary Clinton, who was first lady at the time. Mrs. Clinton requested that they perform on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on New Year’s Eve. (Quincy Jones, a longtime supporter of the partners, helped make the connection.)

“Stomp” dutifully did the show and skipped the scuba diving.

“Then we partied at the White House till 4 in the morning,” Mr. Cresswell said. “It was fantastic.”

“It was the best party I’ve ever been to,” Mr. McNicholas added.

First, can you tell me about your background?

I started as a drummer, actually! I grew up in church doing drumming, and that's how I went ahead and later on got a chance to learn more about drumming. In church I had a guy named Ricky I would look at all the time, and I was interested in learning how to play the drum set. And that's how I started. Then, I went to school, I joined a band, and I also got a chance, due to my culture, to dance salsa. I loved dancing salsa on the weekends. So, when I wasn't playing drums in church, I was dancing salsa! And that's kind of how all those elements came together for me to do a tryout and join the show STOMP.

Very cool! How does it feel to be on tour with Stomp?

It feels great! This is my second year doing it. The first year, we didn't get to finish due to obvious reasons, there was a pandemic that happened. So, in March [2020], we got called to go back home. But this past September, we got a chance again to train and get conditioned and get back to it, get back to the rhythms, get back to being on stage with our other castmates, and to doing the show again! So, it's been a lot of fun. We've been going around the US right now, and our next stop is Philly!

Tell me what you do in the show!

There is dancing - but not everyone dances - there is drumming, we make music out of everyday objects, and there is no talking during the show. The castmates, we don't speak at all, there's no speaking lines, no scripts. The music is written. So, how we are, how we act on stage, is all improv. There's a lot of improv in the show, which is pretty interesting. I think a lot of people have seen the show before, or heard of it, or have at least seen a number called 'Brooms'. We start the show with 'Brooms', that's where we all come out and we greet ourselves. And then we go from there to doing other numbers.

There's a lot of different sounds that we have in the show, there's a lot of intricate sounds, the show is not a loud show the whole time. So, you won't have a headache during the show! There are moments where you get to lean in, to listen to what we're playing. It's going to be a lot of audience participation as well. And, that's how we roll! It's a great show, it's a really fun show.

I feel like a lot of people don't know that the show is a lot of improv.

We all play a character, I play a character called Doctor Who. He plays a comedic role, and he provides that comedic relief during the show. So does another character named Mozzie, he's one of the main comedians on the stage. We have the two girls, we have Cornish, she's kind of quirky. And we have another lady named Bin, she kind of holds it down for the women in the show. We also have a male called Sarge. Sarge is basically the conductor of the show, we go based on his rhythm, and on his dynamics within what he brings. We have Potato Head, Potato Head is Sarge's best friend! They go at it with the drumming. We have Ringo, he's a little more laid back. And we have Particle Man, Particle Man is a little fancy, he's doing a lot of the dancing, he's doing the flips.

So, bringing all that together, I think everyone can relate with at least one of those characters that's on stage. With no talking in the show, you see how these characters act, every show is different. The show that you would see on a Friday night is not the same show you would see on Saturday night. The music might be the same, but what happens- and how- on stage, is all improv. So, that's what keeps the show pretty fresh, even for us, the cast. One of my favorite things to do, especially because I play a comedic role, I like to break the other characters, I like to make them laugh. It's a fun experience. We also like to break the fourth wall and invite the audience to be a part of what we're doing. So, if we're clapping, you guys are clapping, if we're stomping, y'all are stomping. Whatever we do in any given time in the show, you get a chance to do it as well.

Building off of that, how has the audience response been? It's been such a long time since we could all be in any kind of space together, never mind a theater. So, what has the response of the audience been like?

It's 100% been a good response. I think we were the first show in New York City to reopen. So, that was a great moment for us as performers, because we've wanted to be creative for a very long time and coming back on that stage really made us happy again. For the audience, the audience keeps buying tickets! They really do enjoy the show. The show has been around for about 30 years now. The audience still loves the show, they love seeing what we do. One of my favorite moments is, if I'm not in the show, sometimes I'm in the back watching the show when I'm on tour. And I'll notice people. Once they leave, I'll notice kids tapping on things, I'll notice the audience clapping, and talking about the show. I love hearing what the audience reactions are. It's really fun to listen in, as a spy in the back! They really enjoy the show.

Absolutely, it's super gratifying, I imagine. How does it feel for you personally to be back performing live again after so long?

For me, personally, it's been good. It's been really good to be back on stage. It's been great to also be around the cast. It's great to be back on stage with the show, it's something I decided that I wanted to do, I went for the tryout, and now I'm back in it. Sometimes you forget and take it for granted, and when you don't do it for a while you wish you could go back to being back in the show. So it feels great to be back. And the times I wasn't in the show, I was watching videos of me being in the show, pictures of me being a part of the show. It feels good to continue my STOMP journey. I'm also a photographer, so I decided that in this tour I would take photos during the show for the cast. Because it sucked during the pandemic. Like you said, it's super gratifying knowing that we're back on sage again. We're excited to be back together as a group.

News & Features

About stomp on broadway, video & photos.

Stomp is a joyful, witty and wordless show that has been seen all over the world. An eight-member cast with energy to burn creates beautiful music and sly humor with found objects: Zippo lighters, push brooms, wooden poles, hammer handles, garbage cans, inner tubes, matchboxes—and yes, even the kitchen sink. There’s no traditional narrative; both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in this unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy. It is a journey through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum.

Know Before You Go

Stomp is like a party hosted by eight different and compelling personalities ranging from intense and ferocious to deadpan and sarcastic. There is some audience participation, though no one is singled out. A few parts of the show get loud, but the majority of it is comfortable for most audiences. The humor and fun are accessible to all audiences, from kids to grandparents.

The UConn School of Fine Arts is delighted to announce the appointment of Deanna Fitzgerald, MFA, as its new dean, ushering in a new era of artistic education and creative excellence for the School.

Fitzgerald currently serves as Vice Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona and has a multifaceted background as an administrator, as well as an artist and educator in the field of lighting design.

“Deanna brings an extensive background and record of achievement in managing complex budgets, overseeing endowment and scholarship distributions, and leading strategic initiatives,” says Anne D’Alleva, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. “This speaks to her ability to navigate the administrative challenges of higher education while remaining focused on the core mission of fostering student success and artistic excellence. Her reputation as a creative, transparent, empathetic, and pragmatic leader aligns well with the School of Fine Arts values and priorities.”

Fitzgerald’s appointment begins August 1, 2024.

Deanna Fitzgerald, newly named as dean of the School of Fine Arts

“I couldn’t be more excited to lead the next chapter of the excellent and important work being done in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut,” says Fitzgerald. “The determination of the faculty toward student success and the institution’s commitment to the Arts is indisputable. I look forward to getting to know all who are invested and dedicated to UConn SFA, and rallying them toward a bright future in which the Arts are integral to all that UConn does and the communities it serves.”

Academic Experience

Fitzgerald joins UConn School of Fine Arts with 20 years of experience in higher education. Prior to joining the University of Arizona in 2020, she served at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory as the Special Events Production Manager and the University of Utah’s Marriott Center for Dance as the Resident Lighting Designer and Technical Director and as an assistant professor.

Other academic ranks in Fitzgerald’s career at the University of Arizona include Associate Dean for Academic and Student Success, Director of Graduate Studies, Associate Director of the School of Music, Associate Director for Theatre programs, and Interim Director of the School of Dance.

She earned a bachelor’s degree at Flagler College in Florida and her master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music in Ohio.

Career in the Arts

Fitzgerald has contributed her lighting design skills to numerous domestic and international projects such as the premiere of the Las Vegas adaptation of STOMP Out Loud and tours of the original STOMP production, the Cirque Mechanics: Boom Town tour, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, La Boheme, and more.

She is a regular designer for the Rogue Theatre in Arizona and has created designs for the San Francisco Opera’s Merola and Coconut Grove Playhouse’s Young Artist programs. Fitzgerald also created original dance designs for choreographers including Deborah Hay, Ben Levy, and Andy Vaca.

She is also a published author. Her works include the book “The Heart of Light: A Holistic Primer to a Life and Career in Lighting Design,” and the articles “An Introduction to Neurodiversity for the Lighting Designer and Educator,” and “Contemplative Practices for Designers, Technicians and other Theatre Professionals.”

Other Prestigious Roles

Fitzgerald currently serves on the Western Region Exam Committee for United Scenic Artists and as a General Editor for Theatre Design and Technology magazine.

Previously, she has served on the Boards of Directors for the University Resident Theatre Association and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology and fulfilled other roles with notable companies such as the Cincinnati Ballet, the Opera Theatre Music Festival in Lucca, Italy.

Fitzgerald will take over for Interim Dean Alain Frogley, who served in the position for two years. Frogley will return to the position of SFA Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Creative Practices full-time once Fitzgerald’s appointment begins.

“The entire SFA community is thrilled by the appointment of Deanna Fitzgerald as our new Dean,” says Frogley. “Her multi-faceted administrative experience and inclusive vision will be crucial as we enter a new era for the school and for higher education.”

“Sincerest thanks to Alain Frogley for his dedicated service as Interim Dean of the School,” says D’Alleva. “His leadership has significantly contributed to the advancement and success of the arts at UConn over the past two years.”

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

ABOUT IMAGINE DRAGONS:

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Most recently, Imagine Dragons made history on Spotify, as “Bad Liar” became their 10th song to surpass 1 billion streams. The band now holds the crown for the group with most billion-plus streamed songs, becoming the first in the platform’s history to have ten songs reach this milestone. Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons’ music videos for hits “Thunder” and “Believer” have garnered an astounding 2 billion YouTube views, while videos for “Radioactive” and “Demons” have surpassed over 1 billion views.  They’ve collaborated with everyone from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa to Avicii and film composer Hans Zimmer. Giving back, they’ve raised millions for various causes, including their pediatric cancer charity the Tyler Robinson Foundation, and frontman Dan Reynolds’ LOVELOUD Foundation and festival in support of LGBTQ+ youth. In 2022, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky named them ambassadors for UNITED 24, which benefits humanitarian aid in Ukraine. Imagine Dragons earned an impressive four nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards including “Favorite Pop Duo or Group,” “Favorite Rock Artist,” “Favorite Rock Album” and “Favorite Rock Song.” The band was also nominated for “Group of 2022” for the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Most recently, they received an MTV VMA nomination for “Video For Good” for their acclaimed “Crushed” music video.

Clutch Pro Tour to be included in World Rankings

stomp the tour

The Clutch Pro Tour will be included in the world ranking system, Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) said on Thursday.

The Tour was created in 2019 for lower level professionals, especially in the United Kingdom, and now acts as a feeder to the Challenge and DP World Tours. Its tournaments are played over 54 holes with a 36-hole cut.

The announcement followed a 17-month long application process, and the Clutch Pro Tour Tier One tournaments will become an OWGR Eligible Golf Tour from this week.

"This is a significant milestone for golf, and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in developing the sport of golf in the United Kingdom," OWGR Chairman Peter Dawson said in a statement.

The opening event in the Clutch Pro Tour season begins on April 30 at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed circuit that launched in 2022 and has divided the sport, had its application to be included in the world ranking system unanimously rejected by the OWGR in October.

LIV sent a letter to its members in March informing them that the organisation had formally withdrawn its application to be included in the rankings system. REUTERS

Things To Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | journey’s 50th anniversary tour makes its way to norfolk with a ‘dirty dozen’ in store.

Journey members (from left) Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon and Arnel Pineda. Journey is on its 50th anniversary Freedom Tour 2024 and will perform with Toto in Norfolk.

Journey is back with its 50th-anniversary tour, headlining arenas this spring before spending a chunk of the summer on a stadium tour with Def Leppard.

Guitarist and founding member Neal Schon and keyboardist/guitarist Jonathan Cain say that today’s band has never played better.

“Finally, it sounds like the Journey everybody knows,” Cain said of the group, which formed in 1973 in San Francisco. “It’s back to the ’80s, that’s what it sounds like.”

Journey with special guest star Toto is coming to Scope Friday.

Schon and Cain are the two remaining members going back to the early 1980s when Journey was churning out hits like “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Any Way You Want It” and “Open Arms.” The two reflected on the band during a recent video interview, including on recent lawsuits, disputes and personnel changes, and regaining a level of popularity that has Journey back on the road.

But there were more issues to come – this time between Schon and Cain. Schon sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cain after Cain joined a sing-along of “Don’t Stop Believing” at a November 2022 event for former president Donald Trump. Cain’s wife, Paula, had worked as a spiritual advisor to Trump. Schon took offense to Cain’s performance, noting that Journey never was and never would be a political band.

Then last year, Schon and Cain traded lawsuits over a financial account for the group. The bandmates hashed out their differences without the courts, they said.

“All we really did was get fed up with the legal and having legals talk instead of us,” Schon said. “We talked for a couple of hours and we talked through it all. I think that’s what fixed everything.”

Now Schon and Cain are leading Journey (with Pineda, Castronovo and Jensen) on one of the band’s biggest touring years. Fans can expect to hear Journey’s biggest hits — the “Dirty Dozen” as the band has nicknamed them — with a handful of new or deeper cuts. This makes crafting set lists a challenge but it’s a problem many bands would welcome.

“We just have a massive catalog,” Cain said, “with so many great songs that we don’t get to.”

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Scope, 201 E. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk

Tickets: Start at $49.50
