Seit stolzen 50 Jahren steht Suzi Quatro bereits auf der Bühne – und begeistert auf ihren Konzerten nach wie vor mit einzigartiger Energie. Davon kann man sich im Mai 2023 aus erster Hand überzeugen, wenn die Musiklegende zusammen mit ihrer Band und dem vielversprechenden Tournee-Motto „The Devil In Me“ in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz zu Gast ist! Sogar im hochgradig Adrenalin-befeuerten Musikbusiness findet man ein Energiebündel wie Suzi Quatro nur äußerst selten. Seit ihrem 14. Lebensjahr steht die Amerikanerin auf der Bühne, feuert regelmäßig ihre großen Hits aus der Hüfte. Mit „Can The Can”, „48 Crash”, „Devil Gate Drive”, „If You Can’t Give Me Love”, „She’s In Love With You” oder „Stumblin In” wurde sie in den 1970ern zur Ikone. Kein Wunder also, dass sie keinen Gedanken ans Aufhören verschwendet. „Ich gehe erst in Rente, wenn ich mich umdrehe, mit dem Hintern wackele und es herrscht Stille“, erklärt sie – wohlwissend, dass bis dahin noch viel Zeit vergehen dürfte. Suzi Quatro wird zwar immer wieder mit dem Glam-Rock assoziiert, steht aber mit ihrer beispiellosen über 50-jährigen Karriere und ihren großen Hits, die schon längst zu Evergreens geworden sind, hoch über diesem Subgenre, ihre Vielseitigkeit beweist sie immer wieder – zuletzt mit ihrem 2019 erschienenen Studioalbum, das ihrem künstlerischen Freiheitsdrang entsprechend „No Control“ heißt. Klar hört man hier mehr oder weniger harten Rock, aber es wird auch gegroovt und geswingt, was das Zeug hält, außerdem hat das Energiebündel auch jede Menge Soul und Blues mit einfließen lassen. So klingt es mal wie ZZ Top, mal hat das Honky-Tonk-Piano die Kontrolle – und wenn in einem Song Calypso oder Psychedelic passt, warum nicht? Die quirlige Musikerin vermengt alles ohne Berührungsängste zu einem abwechslungsreichen, unverwechselbaren Sound. Man erkennt den Stolz, den Suzi Quatro für „No Control“ empfindet. Stolz und Freude über eine Karriere, die seit fünf Dekaden anhält und der amerikanischen Rock-Ikone bis in die Gegenwart hinein ihre Kreativität erhalten hat. Sie sagt: „Ich habe in all den Jahren nie aufgehört, neue Scheiben aufzunehmen. Suzi Quatro (born on June 3, 1950) is an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, bass player and actor, hailing from Detroit, Michigan, U.S.

Initially influenced by the likes of Elvis Presley and Billie Holliday as she was without a female rock and roll role model, Quatro’s earliest musical excursion came playing in her father’s band The Art Quatro Trio. She later moved on to join her sister’s band The Pleasure Seekers and released the singles “Never Though You’d Leave Me”/ What A Way To Die” in 1966, and “Light of Love” / “Good Kind of Hurt” in 1968. Uninspired by their label's direction for them, the group soon departed Mercury Records and changed their name to Cradle, and began playing the Midwest rock ballroom circuit.

Quatro subsequently signed with RAK Records as a solo artist and moved to England where the label was based. The rock singer’s debut single “Rolling Stone” in 1972, proved popular in Portugal but nowhere else unlike her sophomore single “Can the Can”. Utilising the glam rock proclivity of writers and producers Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, “Can the Can” topped the charts in both the UK and Australia and paved the way for string of hit singles including “48 Crash”, “Devil Gate Drive” and “The Wild One”.

Despite this single success and album successes with “Suzi Quatro” (1973) and “Quatro” (1974) in Europe and Australasia, popularity in the U.S. proved hard to come by. That was until she appeared as Leather Tuscadero in the U.S. sitcom “Happy Days” which coincided with the released of her fifth studio album “If You Knew Suzi” in 1978. The album shot to No. 37 on the Billboard 200, aided by the No. 4 single "Stumblin’ In” featuring Chris Norman.

Quatro released the album “Suzi… And Other Four Letter Words” in 1979, followed by “Rock Hard” in 1980 on Mike Chapman’s label Dreamland Records. The label soon perished however and with the days of glam rock coming to an end with the arrival of the ‘80s, Quatro altered her sound in a new-wave direction with the album “Main Attraction” in 1983.

The singer then pursued an acting career and starred in the West End musical “Annie, Get Your Gun” in 1986, hosted a TV chat show “Gas Street” and became a disc jockey on BBC radio. During this time Quatro released the albums “What Goes Around” in 2003, “Back to the Drive” in 2006, “In the Spotlight” in 2011, and continued her extensive touring the UK, Australia and Japan in support of them. To mark 50 years in rock and roll, Suzi Quatro issued the anniversary box set “The Girl from Detroit City” in 2014.

The stage is black except for the strobe lights flashing over the band members. A trumpet, saxophone, horn, guitar, and drum set accompany Suzi Quatro's bass guitar and vocals. The happy cries from the audience mingle with the drum beat and the hazy lights dance from musician to musician on stage. Suzi Quatro, looking like the rocker she is in black jeans and a black leather vest studded with metal spikes, steps on with her electric bass guitar and simultaneously belts out the lyrics to “Rock Hard” and plays the guitar part. Suzi Quatro has produced an astounding amount of music. Over the course of a forty plus year music career, she has released fifteen studio albums, from Suzi Quatro to In The Spotlight, eleven compilations/non studio albums, and fifty three singles. She has won multiple gold, silver, and bronze Bravo Otto rewards for female singers, and was selected as one of only twelve Queens of British Pop by BBC TV. Quatro's fame stems not only from her epic rock music, but also from the fact that she is the first female bass player to emerge as a leading rock star. This American musician revolutionized the woman's role in rock music. Today, after an extensive career touring the world, this rock goddess still puts on an exceptional show.

American rock singer/songwriter Suzi Quatro has a relatively universally recognised name due to enjoying hits in the 70s and 80s. She was labelled as one of the most evocative and aggressive women in rock in her heyday and although all these years later the snarl has faded, there is an indescribable attitude bubbling under the surface of Suzi's synonymous vocal.

She has some musicians onstage to aid her in recreating the rocking riffs of '48 Crash' and 'Devil Gate Drive' tonight yet she has a special power source in the audience who continuously energise the performance with cheers, bellowed choruses and rapturous applause. Suzi Quatro to celebrate 60 year reign as official Queen of Rock and Roll with five-date UK tour

Suzi Quatro's 2024 tour dates come 60 years after the glam legend formed her first band, the Pleasure Seekers

Glam rock legend Suzi Quatro has announced plans to celebrate her 60th anniversary in the music business with a UK tour. Quatro, who formed her first band, the Pleasure Seekers, in Detroit in 1964 after watching The Beatles appear on the Ed Sullivan show, will play five shows this November.

“It's my 60th year in the business, and it still feels like I've just started," says Quatro. " Devil Gate Drive , Number 1, 51 years ago. Are you ready now? Let’s do it one more time for Suzi."

The five dates begin with a performance at London's iconic Palladium on November 13, wraps up at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester on November 20, with dates also scheduled in York, Cardiff and Liverpool. Tickets go on sale on March 1 at 10am. 

Quatro is currently on tour in Australia, topping a bill that also includes Cheap Trick , Jon Stevens, The Angels , Baby Animals, Screaming Jets and Chocolate Starfish. She also plays a series of European shows and festival dates over the summer. Full dates below.

The iconic rock trailblazer Suzi Quatro will be headlining Wickham Festival on Friday 2nd August 2023 . She paved the way for a new generation of female rock stars in the 70s.  We really are over the moon to welcome Suzi and her fantastic band to the Wickham stage.  There’s no doubt that as far as live rock performances go, Suzi is up there with the all-time greats . We’re sure this will be a night to remember!  To date she has sold over 55 million records. Her hits include, Can the Can, 48 Crash , Too Big , Devil Gate Drive, Daytona Demon, The Wild One , She’s in Love With You, Mama’s Boy, If You Can’t Give Me Love, Rock Hard, and a million seller in the USA, Stumblin In a duet with Chris Norman .

She was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in a musical family with three sisters and one brother, who all played various instruments. Suzi herself made her debut on stage playing bongo’s in her fathers jazz band, The Art Quatro trio.

From an early age she studied classical piano and percussion, then aged 14, began an all-girl band with elder sister Patti  called The Pleasure Seekers . Suzi was ‘told’ she would be playing bass guitar, which was as tall as her! She quickly became the lead singer and front person.

The band toured successfully for 7 years releasing a few singles along the way.  They changed their name to Cradle in 1969. It was in this band, a couple of years later, that Mickie Most (a producer behind scores of hit singles for acts such as the Animals, Herman’s Hermits, Donovan, and many others) came to a Cradle concert one night and offered Suzi a solo contract. Since then she never looked back and flew to England in 1971 to begin her journey to fame. When Mickie asked her what she’d like to wear to promote Can the Can she said “leather” which he thought was old-fashioned. But she stuck to her guns and THE look was born …

Soon after Suzi began working with now legendary songwriters Chinn and Chapman (Mike Chapman also produced). This resulted in the huge hit, Can the Can, which topped the charts in May 1973, and went on to sell two and a half million copies worldwide .

Between 1973 and 1980 Suzi featured in the British charts for no less than 101 weeks.  She has sold to date over 55 million records , and still counting.

As the 1970s drew to a close, Suzi spread her wings and landed a part on the worldwide hit TV  show, ‘Happy Days’, playing Leather Tuscadero opposite Henry Winkler and Ron Howard .

She continued to act in other shows including Minder, Dempsey and Makepeace, Absolutely Fabulous, and Midsomer Murders. In 1986 Suzi made her West End debut playing the leading role of Annie Oakley in Irving Berlin’s ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ for which she received great critical acclaim. 1988 saw Suzi spread her wings again as she hosted her own talk show called ‘Gas Street’ which ran for a year.

In 1989 Suzi was one of the first rock and roll acts to go to Russia where she performed for over half a million people in just six weeks. In 1991 Suzi was triumphant again when realised a lifelong ambition by co-writing the music and lyrics to ‘Talullah Who?’, a musical about notorious actress Tallulah Bankhead. She also starred in this production.

1999 saw Suzi start her radio career with BBC Radio 2 , which is ongoing today. Suzi has done her own weekly programs, and many special documentaries including Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Patsy Cline, and a recent special on her home town of Detroit. Suzi has met, interviewed or played on stage with most of her hero’s. She was nominated for music broadcaster of the year at the Sony radio awards in 2006. 1999 also saw Suzi honoured in ‘This Is Your Life’, with Michael Aspel and the famous red book.

In 2006 Suzi released the autobiographical album, “Back to the Drive”… which has become a fans favourite worldwide. Suzi also made an appearance alongside Charles Dance in the theatre in a play called “Exonerated at this time”. Unzipped, Suzi’s Autobiograpy was released in 2007 and has done extremely well worldwide.

In 2014, to celebrate her 50 years in the business, BBC Radio 2 featured this show as part of their Christmas schedule taped at the BBC Radio Theatre. It was prime time 2 hours long, unzipped, turning into a mini concert at the end, and was attended by such luminaries as Bruce Welch (The Shadows) and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Suzi did a 23 date sell out tour of Australia in 2015 , her 32th tour of this country. It was to be her *final* tour of the Australia.  But this decision was turned around about a year later when she realised she was nowhere near retiring and promised her audience to NEVER use the f-word again.. In may 2017, she headlined a ‘Legends’ Arena tour in the UK , along with Hot Chocolate , The Osmonds and David Essex.  In 2019 her documentary, “ Suzi Q ” was released. It has been featured on CNN, Entertainment Tonight, Golden Globes Page, Billboard, Rolling Stone and Variety just to name a few. 

It is a warts and all, raw and real film, and because of the attention it has received she has now signed to do a movie of her life. The script is nearing completion and a list of names has been drawn up to play Suzi.

In 2021 she released a second album, with her son, ‘The Devil in Me’, which also charted around the world. In 2022 she released ‘Uncovered’ on the Sun Record label.  This release has six of her favorite cover songs including James Brown’s “The Boss”, Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move”, and Rufus Thomas’s “Walking The Dog”.  There will soon be a live stream of this which will be a one time only chance to see her play these track live.

Last year she released her duet album ‘Face to Face’ with Wickham Festival favourite, singer/songwriter and guitarist Kt Tunstall .’ This has charted in numerous terriorities around the world, even getting in to the top 10. It was album of the week on BBC Radio 2 , and picked up the ‘Album of the Year’ award, presented by Jools Holland. It has impressed critics with tracks like Shine A Light and Overload …

2023 marked the 50th anniversay of Can the Can being number one .  Throughout this time Suzi is never idle … she must entertain, she must create, and she must communicate. Her famous quote says it all…

The legendary Suzi Quatro to tour Australia for the 40th time

Heading to Australia in January 2025, Suzi will perform her full theatre show, “Rockin On” where there are no limits as she takes her fans on a musical journey through her Life.

Her show features all her greatest hits such as ‘ Can The Can’, ‘48 Crash’, ‘If You Can’t Give Me Love’, ‘She’s In Love With You’  and  ‘Devil Gate Drive’ , and as always with Suzi a few inspiring surprises are included.

Combining her unbridled energy,  crash-through  stage presence with her legendary bass guitar and powerhouse vocals, on stage Suzi is a pure rock n’ roll legend, who has perfected her craft over six decades of touring.

Suzi reminisces: “Looking back on my career, 60 years now in the “biz”, and now my 40th tour of Australia, I still can’t believe it. 

“Since my first time in 1974, with two tours that year, I totally fell head over heels for Australia, with the country and the people, everything about it,” she said.

Quatro released her self-titled debut album in 1973 and has since produced fifteen studio albums, ten compilations, and one live album. Her duet “Stumblin’ In” with Smokie’s lead singer Chris Norman reached No. 4 in the US. She remains active, recently releasing the studio album “Face to Face” in 2023. She also hosts radio programs on BBC Radio 2

Suzi Quatro will play at The Palais in St Kilda on 26 January 2025. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster.

Suzi Quatro: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester – Live Review

Louder than War’s Martin Mathews (words) and Melanie Smith (photos) were lucky enough to spend an evening in the presence of rock royalty. The undisputed Queen of Rock and Roll Suzi Quatro, played to a sold-out crowd on the last date of a short UK tour, celebrating 50 years since her first hit ‘Can the Can’ in 1973.

Whilst this show was to celebrate the anniversary of her first hit this was way more than a nostalgia trip, this was a retrospective career-spanning showcase of an artist featuring songs recorded and released between 1973 and 2023 and what a show it was. At 7.30pm prompt the eight-piece band took to the stage followed by Suzi herself looking fabulous in a bedazzled double denim outfit, oozing confidence and stage presence, which proved the title Queen of Rock and Roll is deserved and justified.

Suzi promised us all the old favourites, as well as some new, which was a reference to her most recent album that was released this year, her 15th studio album, a collaboration with KT Tunstall, called Face to Face. Suzi played an extended and exemplary version of Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World, which raised the bar and was most fitting for today’s climate. The songs were perfectly balanced and each one of them delighted the appreciative crowd, who were having a ball singing along, clapping and cheering. Suzi also told us that she has a rule to only perform songs on stage that she has recorded, so any covers on the setlist have been recorded by her.

The second half of the show saw Suzi return to the stage in her trademark figure-hugging black leather catsuit declaring “Now I feel like me” and whilst any artists age shouldn’t be an issue or even discussed she is by her own admission a proud 73 year old.

As the show went on she took the opportunity to introduce us to all eight members of the band, including her three “horny boys” playing saxophone, trumpet and trombone and she then went on to tell us how like the engine in a car the most important part of any band was the bass and drums, which led into a drum and bass solo, before she joined the drummer at his kit for an unmistakable extended intro to THAT song, the one we had all been waiting for Can the Can, followed by Devil Gate Drive which closed the main show.

A further three songs followed, in the two encores with Suzi proudly telling us that she was, and is and always will be a “Sweet Little Rock and Roller”. The last song of the night once again saw Suzi alone on the stage, singing her version of The Eagles ballad Desperado, one of her favourite songs, “the lyrics mean so much to me” before receiving a standing ovation and leaving the stage.

Suzi Quatro once famously said “I will retire when I go onstage shake my ass and there is silence”. Judging by this show and the crowds’ reaction in Manchester retirement isn’t going to be happening anytime soon.

I came to this show as a casual fan knowing only the big hits and left converted and wanting to explore more of her incredible body of work. Suzi, thank you for an amazing, unforgettable night and a show that is up there with the very best I have been lucky enough to see. Long live the Queen of Rock and Roll.
