Tanguar Haor Travel Guide

Tanguar haor (wetlands)..

Tanguar Haor is one of the major wetlands in Bangladesh located at Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazillas of Sunamganj district. The entire marsh area is naturally spectacular and has great importance to the environment, economy and food supply. There are forty villages in and around the wetlands, with almost fifty thousand people dependent on the wetlands for their livelihood. Every winter thousands of migratory birds travel to these wetlands from cooler climate regions. In the monsoon season The wetlands is completely underwater, whilst in the dry season around 30 percent remains under water.  Tanguar Haor is spectacular year round, and during the monsoon this extensive body of water is reminiscent of the ocean. Boats are used to transport people and goods from one place to another. Thousands of visitors, from home and abroad, visit Tanguar Haor every year, especially during winter. At this time of year the water becomes very clear and blue. Travel conditions allow easier access to Tanguar Haor in winter time.

How to travel to Tanguar Haor.

From sunamganj: .

During the monsoon one has to travel to Shaheb Bari boat station first, from where a boat can be hired to visit Tanguar Haor. Be sure to negotiate the cost of boat hire. In general, the hire cost will be in the region of BDT. 2000-3000 for a motorised boat for a 4 to 6 hours ride, and BDT. 5000-8000 for a speed boat for a 2 to 3 hours ride. During winter it is necessary to cross the river from Shaheb Bari Ghat, then travel to Sripur Bazar by motorbike (as a pillion passenger). This journey takes around two hours at a cost of BDT. 100-300 one way. The cost to hire a boat from Sripur Bazar to Tanguar Haor is between BDT. 500-1000 for a two hour trip. An early start from Sunamganj is recommended in order to maximise time spent at Tanguar Haor.

From Sylhet: 

In order to visit Tanguar Haor it is necessary to travel to Sunamganj first. If going on a day trip from Sylhet, privately hiring reserved transport to and from Sunamganj is highly recommended. Alternatively one can travel by bus from Sylhet to Sunamganj. Depending on the season, once at Sunamganj, there are two ways to get to Tanguar Haor. During the monsoon take a boat from Shaheb Bari boat station. In the winter it is necessary to cross the river first, travel to Sripur Bazar by motorbike then hire a boat from there to visit Tanguar Haor.

From Dhaka: 

There are several direct bus services available between Dhaka and Sunamganj, including Shemoli Paribahan, Al Mubaraka Paribahan, Mamun Paribahan. Most buses depart from Saidabad bus terminal, except Ana Paribahan, which departs from Mahakhali bus terminal. The journey from Dhaka to Sunamganj takes around 8-10 hours. Alternatively one can travel to Sylhet by train, bus or air and then by private transfer to Sunamganj. Follow the above mentioned guidelines to visit the Haor from Sunamganj. 

Where to stay? 

Accommodation options are limited in and around Tanguar Haor. There are a few basic house boats available for an overnight stay, though it needs to be said that local authorities do not recommend this. There are a few private basic hotels and government guest houses are available at Tekerghat. The recommended option here is to stay at a government guest house. Be sure to reserve the accommodation a few days in advance.

Where to eat?

There are very few choices in this area, as such it is recommended to carry all necessary food with you.

Cancellation

• To cancel any tour, an email has to be sent to [email protected] mentioning the tour booking ID and details about the cancellation.
• The time of sending the email will be considered as the time of cancellation.
• The email will be considered as the final application for cancellation. A phone call to the GoZayaan hotline number or any other team member of GoZayaan will not be considered as a request for cancellation.
• The full amount of the tour fee will be refunded if the booking is canceled ten (10) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.
• Fifty Percent (50%) of the tour fee will be refunded if the booking is canceled seven (7) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.
• No refund will be provided if the booking is canceled less than five (5) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.
• Convenience fee is non-refundable and will be deducted from the paid amount.
• All refunds will be processed within seven (7) working days.

Child Policy

• No fee will be needed for children below the age of three (3). No separate seat will be provided in case of transportation and accommodation.
• 50% fee must be paid for any child between the age of three (3) and seven (7) years old.
• Full amount of money must be paid for anyone above seven (7) years old.

টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওরের দর্শনীয় স্থান সমূহ

ট্যাকের হাট, ওয়াচ টাওয়ার, নীলাদ্রি লেক, জাদুকাটা নদী, শিমুল বাগান, বারিক্কা টিলা.

টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওরের হিজল বনটি দেশের সবচাইতে পুরানো হিজল বন। বলাই নদীর পাশেই আছে এই হিজল বন। হাওরের মাছ ও পাখির অভয়াশ্রম এই হিজল বন। টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওরে আছে শতবর্ষীয় হিজল গাছ। বর্ষায় গলা সমান পানিতে ডুবে থাকা গাছে গাছে ঝুলে থাকা হিজল ফুলের সৌন্দর্য আপনাকে মুগ্ধ করবে।

হাসন রাজার যাদুঘর.

সুনামগঞ্জ শহরের সুরমা নদীর ঠিক পাশেই রয়েছে মরমী কবি হাসন রাজার বাড়ি। হাসন রাজা একজন সম্ভ্রান্ত জমিদার ছিলেন। জমিদারির পাশাপাশি তিনি অসংখ্য গান রচনা করেছিলেন। সে সকল গান এখনো জনপ্রিয়তার শীর্ষে রয়েছে। বর্তমানে সুনামগঞ্জের হাসন রাজার বাড়িটি যাদুঘর হিসেবে গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে। এই যাদুঘরে হাসন রাজার স্মৃতি বিজড়িত অনেক জিনিসপত্র আছে। এইখানে আসলে আপনি দেখতে পাবেন মরুমী কবি হাসন রাজার রঙ্গিন আলখাল্লা, তিনি যেই চেয়ারে বসে গান রচনা করতেন সেই চেয়ার। তার ব্যবহৃত তলোয়ার। আরো আছে চায়ের টেবিল, কাঠের খড়ম, দুধ দোহনের পাত্র, বিভিন্ন বাটি, পান্দানি, পিতলের কলস, মোমদানি, করতাল, ঢোল, মন্দিরা, হাতে লেখা গানের কপি, ও হাসন রাজার বৃদ্ধ বয়সের লাঠি। টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওর থেকে ফেরার পথে ঘুরে যেতে পারবেন হাসন রাজার যাদুঘর।

ডলুরা শহীদদের সমাধি সৌধ

বাংলাদেশের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে ডলুরা ছিল সুনামগঞ্জ জেলার সীমান্তবর্তী এলাকার অন্যতম রণাঙ্গন। এই রণাঙ্গনে সম্মুখ যুদ্ধে যারা শহীদ হন তাদের কয়েকজনকে এইখানে সমাহিত করা হয়। ১৯৭৩ সালে শহীদদের স্মরনে এইখানে স্মৃতি সৌধ নির্মান করা হয়। এইখানে ৪৮ জন শহীদের সমাধি রয়েছে। সুউচু পাহাড়ের পাদদেশে লুকিয়ে আছে ১৯৭১ এর রক্তাত্ত সংগ্রামের স্মৃতি চিহ্ন।

পাইলগাঁও জমিদারবাড়ি

সাড়ে পাঁচ একর জমির উপর ৩০০ বছর আগে তৈরি করা হয় পাইলগাও জমিদার বাড়ি। কালের পরিক্রমায় ক্ষয়ে যাওয়া জমিদার বাড়িটি আজও সৌন্দর্য, ইতিহাস এবং ঐতিহ্যের ধারক। এই জমিদার বাড়ির অবস্থান সুনামগঞ্জ জেলার জগন্নাথপুর উপজেলার ০৯নং ইউনিয়নে। এই জমিদার বাড়ির প্রতিটি ঘর যেন এক অন্যরকম নান্দনিক স্থাপত্য শিল্পের সাক্ষী হয়ে আজো বিদ্যমান রয়েছে। পাইলগাও জমিদার বাড়ি প্রাচীন পুরাকীর্তির এক অনন্য নিদর্শন।

Cancellation:

·           To cancel a tour, an email must be sent to [email protected] , stating the tour booking ID and details of the cancellation.

·          The time of sending the email will be considered as the time of cancellation.

·          The email will be treated as the final request for cancellation. Phone calls to the Nariatravels hotline number or any team member of Naria Travels will not be considered as a cancellation request.

·           A full refund of the tour fee will be provided if the booking is canceled five (5) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.

·          Fifty percent (50%) of the tour fee will be refunded if the booking is canceled three (3) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.

·          No refund will be given if the booking is canceled less than three (3) days prior to the start of the experience/tour.

·          The convenience fee is non-refundable and will be deducted from the paid amount.

·          All refunds will be processed within seven (7) working days.

Child Policy:

·          No fee is required for children below the age of four (4). They will not be provided with a separate seat during transportation and accommodation.

·          A 50% fee must be paid for children between the ages of five (5) and ten (10) years old.

First Night:

·       Departure from Dhaka to Sunamganj via Naria Travels and Tours.

·       In the morning, after reaching Sunamganj, have a fresh breakfast at a local restaurant.

·       Then, head towards Taherpur and reserve a Nau Boat for a tour of Muktamoni Lake.

·       Afterward, take a break and have lunch on the boat.

Tangua Haor Travel Guide [Houseboat, Food, Total Cost]

Spread over an area of ​​about 100 square kilometers in Sunamganj district, Tangua Haor is well-known to travel lovers. Its popularity has increased in 2022, thanks to the luxurious and attractive houseboats.

Tangua Haor

Tanguar Haor is located in Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj district at the foothills of Meghalaya hills.

The spectacular view of the mountains in Meghalaya makes the appearance of Haor more majestic. It is the second Ramsar site in Bangladesh after the Sundarbans. For those who don’t know, Ramsar is a collective effort to protect the global ecosystem.

The total area of ​​Tanguar Haor is about seven thousand acres during the rainy season, which increases almost three times in size. More than 30 springs from Meghalaya, India merge into Tanguar Haor. This vast reservoir of biodiversity includes about 250 species of birds, 140 species of fish, more than 12 species of frogs, more than 150 species of reptiles, and more than 1000 species of invertebrates.

This haor is also home to migratory birds from far Siberia in winter.

Best Time to Travel

July to October is considered to be the best time to visit Tanguar Hawar.

Besides, many migratory birds arrive in this haor during winter. For bird lovers, winter is the perfect time to visit.

There are two routes,

• Sunamganj City/Taherpur -> Tanguar Haor
• Netrakona->Mohanganj->Dharmapasa->Madhyanagar -> Tangua Haor

Dhaka to Sunamganj

Daily direct buses of Mamun, Shyamoli, Hanif, and Ena Paribahan leave for Sunamganj from Fakirapool, Sayedabad, and Mohakhali. Non-AC bus fare is Tk 750. It will take about six hours to reach Sunamganj.

Sunamganj to Tangua

From Sunamganj bus stand CNG, Laguna and Bikes to Tahirpur are available. It will take about an hour and a half.

You can hire a small or big troller according to the number of people in the group from Tahirpur Ghat.

Also, there are many houseboats with various facilities. However, houseboats must be booked in advance.

During the rainy season, you can reserve houseboats/trollers from SahebBari Ghat of Sunamganj city. In this way, you do not have to travel for one and a half hours by road to Tahirpur.

In winter you have to go to Solemanpur by bike/CNG/Laguna. You can hire a troller from there.

Netrokona to Tangua

Hour express train from Dhaka to Mohanganj. From Mohanganj by Auto/Laguna/Bike to Dharmapasha or directly to Madhyanagar.

It will take about 3 hours to go to Tanguar by reserve troller from Madhyanagar.

Netrakona by bus from Dhaka. Then Madhyanagar Bazar by bike. Or by bus directly to Mohanganj/Madhyanagar Bazar. Tangua hour by troller from Madhyanagar.

Troller rent mainly depends on four factors.

• Size and carrying capacity of the troller
• Days of travel (Weekend/Weekdays/Long Holidays/Blackouts)

• Small trollers: 2000 to 3000 Tk
• Medium trollers: 3000 to 4500 Tk
• Big trollers: 5000 to 7500 Tk

• Big trollers: 8000 to 12000 Tk

Accommodation

Usually, Tourist stay in troller or Houseboats.

Besides, you can stay in a wooden house called Haor Bilash at Tekerghat at a low cost. Moreover, there are several boarding and hotels to stay in Tahirpur Bazar, Sunamganj. But being on a trawler at night will be a different experience.

If you are planning for a day trip, you can eat at Tahirpur/TekerGhat hotel with hoar fish, chicken, and duck.

If you stay in the troller at night, you have to do grocery shopping according to the number of days you will stay. If there are more people, you can hire a cook, or else, the sailor can cook.

• Houseboats and many other standard trollers have good overnight accommodations and meals. Make sure you know what services you are getting while renting.
• While hiring a troller from Madhyanagar, ensure the stove, plate, umbrella (useful if it is sunny), lifejacket, and kacha bazaar are properly taken.
• You have to rent a bike or auto at Tekerghat to go to various spots (Lakmachara, Niladri Lake, Shimul Bagan, Barikka Tila, Jadukata Nodi). 2 people can sit on one bike (three including driver).
• If you go to Netrakona by bus or train, you can spend a day more and visit Durgapur, Birishiri.
• The fares mentioned here are subject to change at any time so check the fares before travelling.

Travel Plan

• Sunamganj bus stands first from any district of the country. Try to be there by 7 am.
• After breakfast ride CNG/Bike/Laguna from Surma Bridge to Tahirpur. It will take 1-1.5 hours. Fix the troller from the ghat and do the necessary shopping for 2 days and 1 night. Fish need not be taken from here. You can buy fresh fish from the small markets of Haor.
• Start the journey by 9/10 am and go to Watch Tower first.
• After noon depart for Tekerghat. Spend afternoon and evening at Niladri Lake. If you haven’t been swimming in watch tower, you can swim here. Take a life jacket wherever you swim.
• From Tekerghat to Lackmachra. You can go around by bike, auto or on foot. Asking a local will show you. Stay at Tekerghat at night.
• Wake up in the morning to enjoy the beauty of Barikka Tila and Jadukata river. Bike should be taken from Tekerghat. If you want, you can go by troller, but you should mention it at the time of hiring the troller.
• You will visit the Shimul garden when it is time for Shimul flowers. Come to Tahirpur in the afternoon. Sunamganj city in CNG/Bike/Laguna as before. From there convenient transportation (bus/train) to your home.
• Here everything will be as per the previous plan except for the 1-1.5 hour journey to Tahirpur. In Sunamganj city you can start your journey from Saheb BariGhat.
• If you don’t want to stay overnight in Hoar, rent a troller from Tahirpur Ghat till afternoon. Talk to the majhi and decide where to go. You can have lunch at Haor Vilas Restaurant. In that case it is better to order food in advance.
• Mohanganj by hour express train from Dhaka.
• Mohanganj to Madhyanagar by Auto/Laguna/Bike. Tanguar hoar by reserve troller from Madhyanagar. It will take about 3 hours.
• Go to Tekerghat after visiting the watch tower. Have lunch at Tekerghat.
• After visiting Niladri Lake, go to Lockmachhara by bike. Visit all places and leave for Madhyanagar within 6 hrs.
• Ask Majhi to fix Auto/Laguna/Bike in Madhyanagar. Otherwise there may be problems at night. Reached Netrakona by Mohanganj Express train to Dhaka.

Houseboat Tour Plan

If you have planned a houseboat tour then your only task is to reach Sunamganj or Tahirpur. After that, the houseboat is responsible for the rest of the movement. They will guide you on the complete tour.

N.B: Be sure about whether houseboat will leave from Saheb Bari Ghat in Sunamganj city or from Tahirpur.

• Tahirpur CNG/bike rental from Sunamganj is Tk 300-600 per person.
• Troller rent 5000 to 15000 taka. The troller fare will be divided according to the number of team members.
• The food cost is Tk 120-200 per person per meal. Apart from this, others cost another 150-250 taka per person.
• It will cost approximately 4500-5500 tk depending on the troller if a group of ten people goes.

If you travel by houseboat, almost all expenses are included in the package, except the cost to and from Sunamganj.

Travel Tips

• Do not swim without a life jacket. (Haor, Niladri Lake, Jadukata River nowhere)
• Stay inside the troller during thunderstorms or heavy rain. Don’t stay on the roof.
• Keep an umbrella, and towel with you. It will be very useful during the extra heat.
• Fix the price beforehand before buying anything.
• The cost will be lower if grouped.
• Going in the middle of the week will save you money, while also avoiding the extra crowds and allowing you to get around peacefully.
• Do not play any mic, or speakers at high volume.
• Do not use bright lights at night.
• Do not act or behave in any way that causes trouble to the natives.
• Do not do anything that harms nature.
• Do not throw any type of non-perishable material into the water.

Booking Tanguar Haor Luxury House Boat

Tanguar Haor is the second largest sweetwater swamp area in the Sunamganj district, the area is about 100 sq km. After Sundarbans , it is the most beautiful largest sweetwater swamp in the northeast reign of Bangladesh is located in Dharmapasha of Sunamganj district and Tahirpur Upazila.  This Haor is decorated with outstretched water, Water Forests, blue sky, hills, and green environment. In the foothills of Jaintia hills, Khasia of Meghalaya in India, Tanguar Haor is full with a huge habitat including fish, birds and other aquatic animals. The total area of ​​Tanguar Haor is 6912 acres. However, during the monsoon, this Haor area goes up to 20,000 acres for increasing the water.

Tanguar Haor is very rich with natural resources. It has developed great biodiversity consisting of 140 species of fish, 12 species of frogs, 1 species of amphibians, 6 species of turtles, 7 species of lizards, 21 species of snakes. and more than 150 species of reptiles. In winter, there are about 250 species of migratory/guest birds in this Haor. It is estimated that 20/25 lakh birds were in the TanguarHaor in the last winter season.

From Tanguar Haor, the hills of Meghalaya of India are seen clearly. About 30 small fountains or tributaries from Meghalaya came to Tanguar Haor. There is a watchtower on the side of the Haor. The water in the surrounding areas is very transparent as if anyone can see the floor of the Haor from the above.  The main two bird sanctuaries of the Tanguar Haor are the Leuchamara and Berberia Beel.

The construction of this Haor is with 120 Beals and 180 low-level/Kanda mills familiarly known to the local people as “Noikuri Kandar Soikuri Beal.” There are nearly small/large 46 floating village/island in the Tanguar Haor. The Government of Bangladesh declared Tanguar Haor as Ecologically Critical Area (ECA) in 1999. In 2000, Tanguar Haor took place on the Ramsar site list.

After reaching Sunamganj, you will find Laguna, CNG or Bike for going to Tahirpur. From Taherpur Bazar Ghat, you will find the affordable boat for visiting Tanguar Haor. According to your financial conditions, you will get different types and sizes boat here. If you go to Sunamganj in the winter season, you have to go Sulemanpur Bazar first using the Laguna, CNG or Bike. You have to take a boat from here to move the Haor. Important to realize, you will get various types of birds in the winter season and it is very amazing.

Where will you stay at Tanguar Haor:

There is no way to stay in Tanguar Haor. But you can stay on the boat. if you want to spend the night in the boat try to stay near the Bazaar. If you want to rent the house, you can rent a room at a low price in a hotel called Haor Bilash in Tekerghat area. Apart from this, you will get the room for staying in Sunamganj from BDT 200 to 1000.

Bamboo roofs create less hot inside the boat in the sun, and it is also comfortable when sitting on the roof. To get the boat comparatively low prices, bargain before starting the journey. Typically small boats can be rented from 1500 to 2000 taka, medium boat 2500 to 3500 taka and large boat for 3500 to 5000 Taka for the whole day. If you want to spend 2 days and 1 night in the boat, it will take BDT 7000 to 8000 on renting a big boat. If you pay the cost of cooking to the boatman, he will take a cook or arrange himself for cooking. You must discuss the overall plan of what to do in the boat with the boatman before negotiating with the boat fare.

Where will you Eat at Tanguar Haor:

In the Taherpur hotel, you will find 20-25 species of fresh fish of Haor, you can eat with the favorite fish of you from here. If you plan to stay more than one day, you can buy the fish from the local market for taking and cooking it on the boat. For buying the fresh fish, you can go to the Bazar at the side of the Haor. You can also take deshi duck or chicken which will make the dish tempting. If you are not used to eating the food from the boatman, you can take preparation to cook it with your team.

2 Days 1 Night Tour Plan To Tanguar Haor:

When you are starting your journey at night from Dhaka, you will reach early in the morning to Tanguar Haor. First, complete your breakfast, then start for Taherpur using CNG, Auto or Bike, It will take you nearly one hour to reach Taherpur. If you want to stay on the boat, buy your daily Bazar from the local market for cooking or eating on the boat. Try to take the boat between 9 to 10 AM and go to the Watchtower area.

You will find the local boys are passing their time on the boat and it is really enjoying. If you want you can finish your cooking here (at the side of the watchtower). Now, you can go to the middle of the Haor and you will be amazed by watching the water all around you. After taking your launch, you can now move to Tekerghat. The more you go, the water will be transparent. Even you can see the bottom/ground of the Haor.

If you don’t take your bath already, you can finish it here at Niladri Lake. When you want to pass the nights on the boat, you can stay in this area. You can cook your food here. I can assure, it will be the best night in your life! After passing the night, in the morning, you should start for Jadukata Nodi Barikkatila. You can go here by Motorcycle. Of course, you can go with the boat, but it is too far from here, so the boatman doesn’t agree with you or he can charge more money nearly 3000 to 4000 from you. It is a good idea to talk about visiting Jadukata Nodi when you are hiring the boat from the Taherpur Bazar.

Visit Jadukata Nodi and Barikkatila and finish it before the launch. Take preparation that you will take your launch returning back to Tekerghat bazar. Surely, you can pass the rest of the time in the Haor. Now come back to Taherpur Bazar before the evening. Now take the CNG, Auto or Bike and return to Sunamganj for getting the bus of Dhaka. Tips for visiting Tanguar Haor:

As Tanguar Haor is in a remote place from the main town and you have to pass the days and nights on the water/boat, you have to become more conscious for taking the necessary items and following some other rules. Let’s check out the tips for traveling Tanguar Haor.

• When visiting Tahnuar Haor, take (must) the life jacket for everyone.
• During the rainy season, the thunderstorm is more in the Haor area, so during the thunderstorm, sit under the bay of the boat.
• In the winter season, Boat should be taken from Suleimanpur, because it is dry season and water is available from Tahirpur boat ghat/river.
• Don’t through excessive portions of food/water in the Haor. Put a polybag for yourself to keep the waste, then keep in a certain dustbin when returning back to the land. It is our natural beauties, so it is our responsibilities to save the areas.
• Avoid high noisemakers or devices in the Haor area.
• Do not use extra bright light at night.

• Stay away from the work that threatens the lives of Tanguar fish, wild animals or birds.
• Be careful not to damage any type of wild animals or forestry areas of Tanguar Haor.

Tanguar Haor Tour for 2 Days 2 Nights

Night Journey: Start from Dhaka at 11 PM by bus. It is a night journey that you will reach Sunamgonj in the early morning.

1st Day: After breakfast, we start our journey to Tahirpur for one and half hour by leguna/ pick up. Then check in hotel for refresh. Just after this, our day long excursion will start to Tanguar Haor. It is a whole day trip in Tanguar Haor. You can swim in the Haor too. Lunch is in the boat. Afternoon, we will visit a limestone that local people know it as Niladri. We will back to Tahirpur. After dinner in town, we stay in hotel.

2nd Day: This early in the morning, we will travel to Jadukata river. Here will visit Shimul bagan (cotton garden) and Barikka Tilla. Dock at Lawrer Garh and transfer to Sunamgonj by CNG/ pick up.

Night Journey: Bus journey from Sunamgonj will take you to Dhaka at 11 PM. Trip ends.

Tanguar Haor is a freshwater howl and a popular tourist spot in Bangladesh . It is a stunning lake in the Sunamganj district of Bangladesh, close to the Meghalaya border of India . The haor covers an area of about 100 square kilometers and encompasses an array of wetlands, grasslands, and bayous. This vast lake is a delight for twitchers, owning a dazzling array of over 250 species of waterfowl that travel here every year.  

History  

Tanguar Haor dates back to the 7th century when the Mughal territorial army used the lake as a strategic military site. In the 16th century, the King of the Gour kingdom used this lake to supply water to his castle and bastion. Throughout the British reign, the lake became a prevalent destination for anglers and fishers who used to come here to take advantage of the profusion of different fishes. 

Location  

Tanguar Haor is in the Sunamganj district of Bangladesh, about 87 miles away from Dhaka. You can see the mountains of Meghalaya from the location. Over 30 waterfalls of Meghalaya congregate in this lake. The haor covers both Dharmapasha and Tahirpur Upazila, and it is the second Ramsar location in Bangladesh. 

Food Arrangement  

There are a few great restaurants around Tanguar Haor, but mostly the food arrangement is taken care of by the boat if you let them know beforehand. The local specialties include fish curry, Shatkora (a type of citrus fruit), and Bhapa Pitha (rice cakes with molasses filling). There are also several restaurants and hotels in the area that offer a variety of local and national cuisines. 

Boat Price  

There are a few things to keep in mind before booking a boat. You should always check if the boat has washrooms, lights and fans, and a mobile charging facility. Prices may vary depending on the size of the boat and the number of people in your group. But you should always bargain to the best of your ability. The price ranges from BDT 1500 ($15) to BDT 10000 ($100). For extra safety, you can rent life jackets and solar panels from the Tahirpur market. 

How to go there  

From dhaka:  .

You can go to Tanguar Haor by bus or microbus. There are a lot of intercity bus operators from Dhaka to Sunamganj. The bus journeys usually take up to 9 hours depending on traffic and breaks. 

From India:  

There is no direct transportation from India to Tanguar Haor, but you have two great alternatives to consider. You can fly to Sylhet Airport, and it is only a 4-hour drive to Tanguar Haor. Alternatively, you can consider any land ports close to Sylhet for entering Bangladesh. 

If you are planning to go to Dhaka first, leave the airport and head to Abdullahpur. Multiple operators run nonstop bus services on this route. Just book a ticket on your convenient schedule and sit back and relax. 

From the USA:  

The easiest way to reach Tanguar Haor from the USA is to fly to Dhaka or Sylhet and take a bus or car from there. The journey from Dhaka airport takes up to 9 hours and from Sylhet, it’s only 4 hours. 

From the UK:  

If you are planning to visit Tanguar Haor from UK, you can fly to Dhaka, the capital of the country, and then take a domestic flight or bus to Sunamganj, where Tanguar Haor is located. Alternatively, you can directly fly to Sylhet, which is close to Tanguar Haor. 

Other Necessary Information:  

Although you can visit the haor any time of the year, the best time to visit Tanguar Haor is from October to March, when the weather is calm and cool, and the lake is at its fullest. I would suggest you not go in the rainy season as the place becomes terrifying due to the constant thunderstorms and rain. You might face life-threatening situations in the rainy season. 

Things to keep in mind:  

• Bring your life jacket (You can rent it from the Tahirpur market) 
• Bargain for anything you buy or hire 
• Don’t stay outside during thunderstorms. 
• Avoid using microphones and speakers 
• Don’t use high-luminance lights at the night 
• Throw waste in the trash can and don’t refrain from catching the endangered fishes.

Tanguar Haor is one of the largest natural water reservoirs in South Asia. Because of its diverse natural and aquatic features, it has been declared as a Ramsar site by IUCN. The site wears different looks at different seasons to attract tourists from around the world. During the rainy season, the Haor becomes a sea with strong waves, and cruising across the Haor is a lifetime experience for the visitors. In wintergreen fields of miles after miles, hundreds of canals, thousands just of migratory birds, fishermen in the ditches are just fabulous for the tourists

By using road/train/air from any places to Sylhet then By local transport to Destination. During the monsoon season, one can go directly to Tangua by engine boat or speed boat from the city's Saheb Bari boat ghat. It takes 5 hours on an engine boat and 2 hours on a speed boat. In that case, the cost of the engine boat is  2,000 / - to 2,500 / taka- whereas the cost of a speed boat is  6,500 / - to 6,000 / -. There is no provision for an overnight stay under private management but it can be located in the rest house of Tekerghat Limestone Mine Project 3 km northeast under government management. In summer, one has to cross Saheb Bari ferry ghat of the city and go to Sreepur Bazar / Dumper Bazaar in 2 hours by motorbike from the other side. Rent 200 takas. From there you can reach Tangua by rented boat. In that case, the cost of rent may be 300-400 / - taka.

The trip will start from kallyanpur from 10:30 pm to 11:00 pm approximately. Time will fix after your confirmation and also will depend on the bus schedule. And return will from Sunamganj bus counter within 9:30 pm to 10:00 pm approximately.

Description

Package Duration: Total 2 Days and 3 nights (Only one night stay on The boat) Accommodation: One night stay on standard types of the boat at Tanguar Haor.

Note: - Must be booked at least 7 days ago by completing the 50% payment of the declared package price from the travel date. Note that, after getting your confirmation then Bus ticket and boat will be issued.

Additional Information

You must be at the counter 30 minutes before the scheduled bus ticket time. Otherwise, if the bus misses due to a delay, Pegah will not be responsible for it, and in that case, you will not get any refund amount.

Cancellation:

The partial amount will be refunded from the tour fee if the booking is canceled 7 days before prior to the tour date. It'll be depending on the Bus and Boat refund policy.

Day Trip to Tanguar Haor

A one day tour to tanguar haor.

Tanguar Haor is a river basin situated at Tahirpur Upazila in Sunamgonj district at Sylhet Division. It is one of the largest Haor of the country.

It will roughly take you few hours to reach there from Dhaka so it will be better if you start a little early from the busy city. After you get off at the Surma Bridge just at the Bus station, you can hire your ride to get yourself at Tahirpur. And if you are taking your own ride then get straight to Tahirpur Ghat.

Tahirpur Ghat is your ultimate destination. By the time you reach, it will be lunch hour, finish your lunch at a local restaurant and move forward towards your joyous ride.

There you will figure various kinds of boats, among them choose according to how many of you will be going and don’t forget to bargain.

Once you start your boat ride, you will surely feel the hype as the beauty of Haor will melt your heart. You can carry few snacks to nibble while enjoying the breezy ride. Take plenty of pictures to capture the unimaginable beauty of the humongous Haor.

Tanguar Haor consists of 51 swamps located between Dhormopasha and Tahirpur Upazilas under the Sunamganj district of greater Sylhet. Spread over an area of about 100 sq-km, this river basin is the second largest freshwater wetland in Bangladesh. Tourists often flock to Tanguar Haor to see the mountains of Meghalaya in the distance, the clear water coming down from the springs, the chirping of innumerable birds, and the amazing beauty of the Koroch-Hijol forest. Let's have the details about the Tanguar Haor trip .

The specialty of Tanguar Haor

To enjoy the magical beauty of Tanguar Haor, many tourists spent days on boats. This experience sets the Tanguar Haor tour apart from all other tours.

More than thirty springs descending from the Meghalaya hills made this Mother Fishery, which contains 200 species of aquatic animals, including 200 species of fish. Hijal Karach's sight has given shelter to more than two hundred species of plants including blue water lily, Helancha, Swarnolota.

In winter, about 250 species of migratory birds, such as the extinct Palaces eagle and the large Gray-Kingstork, fly from faraway Siberia. Among the local birds, you will see many different types of birds including Balihash, Ganchil, Egret, Stork. Tanguar Haor is a sanctuary for two birds called Leuchchamara and Berberiar Beel. Right in the middle of Tanguar Haor is the beautiful Bill Hatirgata, most of which dries up in winter.

Tanguar Haor: The best time to visit

The monsoon is the best season to travel to Tanguar Haor. Because at this time all the swamps of the whole Tanguar Haor are filled with water full to the brim. The best time is from mid-July to the first week of September.

But if you would like to witness the wonderful birds, winter would be a perfect choice. In this case, from the end of December to the whole month of January is the right time. Although the water level in the Haor is very low at this time, there is still no lack of beauty.

Dhaka to Tanguar Haor tour guide

To go to Tanguar Haor, you have to go to Sunamganj first. The distance from Dhaka to Sunamganj by road is about 269 kilometers. From Sayedabad and Mohakhali bus terminals in Dhaka, several AC and non-AC buses including Hanif, Ena, Shyamoli travel directly to Sunamganj. It takes about 6 hours and a half to reach Sunamganj by Non-AC bus with ticket fare 550 Tk.

Then you have to take a rickshaw from Sunamganj bus terminal to Shahebbazar Ghat. During monsoon, it is possible to reach Tangua in 2 hours by speed boat directly from Saheb Bari Ghat. The cost to go by speed boat is 7,500-8,000 Tk. However, it is possible to go between 2,500 Tk and 3,000 Tk by an engine boat. In that case, it will take about 5 hours to reach the destination.

Accommodation for overnight stay

You can rent a room at a low price in a wooden house called Haor Bilash in Tekerhat adjacent to Haor. However, it is a bit difficult to get a room in the on-season. Apart from this, there is no accommodation in private management. However, in Sunamganj you can get a residential hotel for 500 to 2000 Tk.

If you are adventurous, there is an arrangement for you to stay overnight on the boat. In that case, the rent for a local engine-driven boat will be around 5000 Tk. And the modified engine-powered boats which have modern facilities will cost around 15000 to 16000 Tk on holidays. On other days you can get it for 1000 to12000 Tk. However, when renting a boat, don’t forget to make the necessary purchases in advance.

Local meals

If you come to visit Tanguar Haor on a long tour, you can have a feel of a picnic. In the midst of natural beauty, here is a different experience where you can cook and eat by yourself. Moreover, Tanguar Haor is also a favorite for stomach filling. Almost every time there is a variety of fish in the food arrangement.

For those who love to eat duck meat, there is an arrangement of duck meat in the Haor area. Having meals on the roof of the boat with enjoying the surroundings enhances the taste of the food many times over. You can get all the cooking ingredients from the nearest Tahirpur market.

However, if you think of it as a hassle, you can eat delicious food from more than one hotel in Tekerhat. Also, if you go on a one-day tour, you can easily get a three-course meal from a local restaurant. Food prices there are also relatively low.

Spots to roam around Tanguar Haor

Around Tanguar Haor you can see small swamp forests, Shaheed Siraj Lake (Niladri Lake), Barik Tila, Jadukata River, and Laoorer Garh.

Neeladri Lake is basically an abandoned limestone mine of limestone. The combination of the lake's beautiful blue water, small and large hillocks has made it a place of unearthly beauty.

About 40 aborigines live in Barik Tila on the Bangladesh-India border. Jadukata river from the Khasia hills of Meghalaya flows by the side of Tila. An additional enjoyment of this place is the custom called 'Baruni bath' and a fair at the pilgrimage monastery. This occasion takes place 13 days after the full moon of the Hindu community.
