Tata Safari Storme review, test drive and video
Tata’s long-awaited Safari update, the Safari Storme, hits the roads. We take it out for a spin.

When you first look at the new Safari Storme, you are immediately struck by how, even 14 years after its launch, Tata seems to have made barely any changes to the exterior. Alterations to the nose and rear suggest that it’s not much more than a facelift. However, that misconception gets blown to dust the moment you drive it. Once you’re behind the wheel, you realise just how much of an improvement the new Storme is over the previous Safari. It feels better built, it’s far more refined, it rides really well and the interior too feels a generation ahead.
The most obvious changes are to the front, where the slim, wide grille (capped with a thick chrome strip) undercuts the sharp-looking headlights in a nice, stylistic touch. Move to the side however and the Storme looks exactly like the old Safari. New cladding for the doors and wheel arches can’t hide the fact that the glass house is identical, the doors are similar and the A, B and C pillars are the same as well.
At the back, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel has now been moved under the floor. The result is a cleaner rear profile with a new set of tail-lights.
On the inside, the overall improvement in quality all around is immediately evident and almost nothing of the old car is carried over. The chrome door handles and leather seats add a touch of luxury, as do small details like the chrome on the gearlever and the flock lining in the glovebox.
Just like the previous generation Safari, the Storme has excellent seat comfort and, once you haul yourself in, you are rewarded with a commanding seating position and a delightfully spacious and airy cabin. The front seats are large and very well bolstered, whilst the rear bench is supportive too.
In stark contrast, the third row is far from comfortable or practical. The tiny, foldable jump seats are only useable on short journeys, at best.
On the mechanical front, the Safari Storme uses an updated version of the 138bhp Dicor motor, which Tata now calls VariCor, because of the use of a variable geometry turbo. This 2.2-litre common-rail, direct-injection motor uses double overhead cams, hydraulic valve adjusters and sixteen valves to breathe better.
The overall level of refinement is much better now with an engine that is quieter throughout its rev range, and a cabin that feels particularly well insulated from the outside.
Tata engineers have managed to shave around 75 kg off the old car thanks to a lighter chassis, but this hulking two-tonne SUV is a bit lethargic off the line; a result of its weight and lack of low-end torque. You need to keep the engine above 1800rpm, after which the Storme picks up the pace with a fair amount of enthusiasm. The mid-range is quite punchy and cruising is quite effortless, which suits the Safari’s role as a long-distance cruiser.
The clutch is reasonably light and the gearbox has been improved with shorter throws, but the shift still feels a bit soggy and vague.
The Storme sits on a shortened version of the Aria’s hydroformed X2 chassis and maintains the previous Safari’s 2650mm wheelbase. As a result, the Storme’s chassis is approximately 50 percent stiffer and 35kg lighter than the old Safari’s outdated ladder frame.
The ride comfort is simply fantastic. The Storme coasts over bumps and broken roads like a freight train, flattening out even the largest of potholes. The suspension, also carried over from the Aria, is on the softer side, and hence there’s a fair amount of pitching and heaving over uneven surfaces.
The Storme retains the old Safari’s comprehensive four-wheel-drive system that includes a low range and a limited-slip differential. The system is easily engaged by using a central console-mounted dial and this allows the big Tata to tackle medium to difficult sections.
The new Safari Storme comes equipped with features like ABS, remote locking and an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity standard across the range. In fact, the Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) that Tata is asking for the base Storme LX may be considerably more than the old LX, but the equipment is on par, if not better than, the old mid-level EX.
Unusually, the top-end VX versions (Rs 12.5 lakh for the 4x2) no longer get the reversing camera (there’s just parking sensors) or DVD player as they did before.
The Safari Storme, then, comes across as a quantum leap ahead of the previous Safari. It’s well-equipped, refined, better built and comprehensively updated. And with prices starting from Rs 9.9 lakh for the base 4x2 model and going to Rs 13.7 lakh for the fully loaded 4x4 option, it’s great value for money. Also, as a long-distance cruiser, nothing can quite beat it for the money. The only grouse is that, even after 14 years, Tata hasn’t got around to changing the ageing body completely.

Test drive: Tata Safari Storme
By GQ Staff
A capable off-roader that can roll in the mud, but still looks good enough to take to a black-tie event
The Tata Safari was one of the first real Indian SUVs we could buy before we had the likes of Scorpios, Fortuners and Captivas prowling the Indian roads. Expectedly, the Safari soon came to enjoy a steady fan following amongst Indian SUV buyers. Nearly 12 years after the first Safari rolled out of the production line in Pimpri, Tata Motors has overhauled the interior and exterior – and they’ve called it the Storme.
The Storme comes with a brand new front end. Gone is the smiley, traditional Tata face up front, now replaced with a more purposeful and aggressive front end replete with flared headlamps, a new honeycomb grille job, bumpers and a flatter front. The restyling continues to the rear of the car with flatness being the overarching theme. New tail lamps and the repositioned spare wheel, which now goes under the SUV, cleans up the rear.
Tata seems to have borrowed the styling from Land Rover, thereby retaining a rugged, yet contemporary appeal. Stepping into the Safari Storme, and settling down into the high-seating position offers a throne-like commanding view of the road up front. While the previous-generation of Safaris had bad plastics, yawning panel gaps and overall drab interiors, the Storme comes with soft touch plastics, faux wood inserts and a new dashboard design. While the seven-seater is comfortable for five adults, the last two side-facing jump seats in the boot are best used for shorter distances. In terms of feature and creature comforts, Tata has given the Storme a reverse camera which displays on the inner rear view mirror, reverse parking sensors, a DVD touchscreen infotainment system and safety features like twin airbags, ABS and EBD.
Powered by a 2.2 liter 140 hp - 320 Nm VariCOR turbo-diesel engine, the motor feels smooth and responsive. The gearbox housing has been changed to reduce pesky vibes. The 0-100 kph sprint comes up in about 16 seconds, and if you were to give it enough road, it will top out at about 150 kph (impressive for an SUV that weighs close to two tonnes). Transmission is by means of a five-speed gearbox, which did feel notchy although Tata claims to have improved shift quality.
While the throws were short, the shift quality leaves a lot to be desired. The Safari has always been a steady handler, and the Storme now gets the lighter hydroformed chassis from the Aria. Handling is also quite good for an SUV, probably better than even a Scorpio. That said, the Storme being a body-on-ladder top-heavy SUV, it does have its limitations in the twisties and doesn't like changing direction rapidly. Off the road, the Storme is quite a good package for soft off-roading and mud plugging, what with the shift-on-the-fly 4X4 drive system working quite well to get it out of trouble. The Storme is a big improvement over the older Safari, although quite a pricey one at Rs 13.66 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the top-end version.

Tata Safari Storme Spotted Testing Ahead of New Safari Launch
Tata Safari was first introduced in 1998 and after enjoying two successful decades in India it bid a farewell in 2019. The SUV was discontinued before the implementation of the new BS6 emission norms. The home-grown carmaker, however, is all set to revive its iconic Safari brand with the Gravitas based 6/7-seater SUV. The model is slated to launch on 22 nd February 2021.
Ahead of the new Tata Safari launch , the old Tata Safari Storme was spotted testing around the carmaker’s Lucknow-based plant called TELCO (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company). For people not in the know, the facility serves as a production hub for several components and drivetrains used in Tata passenger vehicles.
The old Tata Safari Strome is likely to be there for a particular component testing purpose that still might be in use. Rumour also has it that the spotted test mule could be the updated Army-spec Tata Safari Storme – GS800. The Army-spec model is produced on demand for the defence forces of the country. Read – Upcoming Tata Harrier Launch Date & Details
The last-generation of the Safari was equipped with a 2.2L diesel engine, which was good enough for 156bhp and 400Nm of torque. It was a proper 4X4 SUV with manual gearbox. The 2021 Tata Safari will come with the Harrier’s 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine that pushes out a peak power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. Compared to the old model, the new one is 14bhp more powerful and 50Nm less torqueier.
The new Safari will be available with both manual and automatic gearbox. However, it will miss out on the 4WD drivetrain. Reports suggest that the carmaker might introduce 4X4 system on the SUV model lineup at a later stage. The 2021 Tata Safari has been designed on the Omega platform that’s derived from Land Rover D8 platform. The same architecture underpins the Harrier 5-seater SUV.

Tata Safari Storme SUV launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 9.95 Lacs
CarTrade Editorial Team
Thursday 18 October 2012,10:45 AM IST
Tata Motors launched the much awaited Tata Safari Storme sports utility vehicle (SUV) on 17th October 2012, a day after the launch of its Manza variant. The all new Safari Storme is available at a starting price of Rs. 9. 95 lacs (ex-showroom Delhi); however, its different variants have different pricing.
Its base model 4X2 LX has been marked at Rs. 9.95 lacs, 4X2 EX is available for Rs 10.77 lacs, 4X2 VX comes for Rs. 12.37 lacs and the top variant 4x4 VX for Rs. 13.66 lacs. The much in demand SUV that has been launched now was first showcased at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.
The Tata Safari Storme, having underpinnings and engine from the aria is sure to lure a good number of buyers and create a storm, as its name sounds, in the entry level SUV market in the country. This new SUV from Tata is a more modern and superior car to its
predecessor. Having an Aria-derived chassis and suspension and powered by a 2.2 litre Dicor engine, the all new Safari Storme ensures a better drive dynamics and an excellent refinement and response. Thus, making it a perfect sports utility vehicle.
The Dicor engine is capable of delivering a maximum power of 138.1 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The engine is mated with a five-speed gearbox that has been tweaked to give a better driving experience. The other changes that have been made in the all new Tata Safari Storme in comparison to its predecessor include a shorter turning radius and disc brakes all round.
Although the Storme does not pose a look much different from the current Safari, but its bold and rugged look has been changed with a more corporate look. The headlights of the Safari Storme have received a swept back design and the front grille has been provided a large chrome strip that slightly even stretches over the headlights. The new SUV from the stables of Tata has also been provided with a projector headlamps and honeycomb front grille that is quite wide; however, it doesn't suit Storme's flat contour. Its side cladding has been given a new look and also a new side step has been provided. Apart from these, the remaining body structure has been left untouched.

2024 Tata Safari Storme Classic to take on the Scorpio Classic - Price Launch Details
Tata Safari first made its debut in India in 1998 as a more Competitive, Luxurious, and practical alternative to the 2-door Tata Sierra SUV for ₹ 8.25 lakhs Ex-showroom India . This SUV created a segment of its own and quickly became a status symbol for many upper-class Indians (as the price was pretty expensive).
Tata marketed it as a lifestyle vehicle that not only is capable of performing well on city roads but can easily conquer any other off-terrain thrown at it. People aspirated this freedom well but in 2002 Mahindra launched their Scorpio in the same 7-seater utilitarian segment at a much lower price of ₹ 5.5 Lakhs Ex-showroom India , making Indians quickly shift their Focus from Safari to Scorpio. Scorpio kept on eating Safari’s Market share due to lower cost of ownership and better product mix.
Tata Did a lot to regain their market share – from launching a much more powerful diesel option to offering a lower spec variant at almost the same price as the Mahindra Scorpio, but till now Scorpio had strengthened itself as the No.1 in the segment.
The sales difference between the Scorpio and Safari kept on increasing and went on to such a point where Tata Safari Storme’s yearly sales were less than Mahindra Scorpio’s 2-week sales (that’s crazy).
Safari for Army
But even though our Indian consumers did not realize the real potential of the Tata Safari, our Indian Army did and gave Tata an order for over 3000 Safaris in 2018 for its GS800 armed vehicle category . The Indian Army tested more than 10 vehicles for their GS800 category but only found the Tata Safari Storme fulfilling all their requirements.
But after all this and the launch of the Harrier, Tata had to streamline their production and make Harrier their new flagship SUV and also due to BS6 coming in place, there was no reason to invest additional money on the Safari Storme project due to the sluggish demand, so in late 2019 Tata officially bid Farewell to the Tata Safari Storme.
But Mahindra is still making big bucks selling their 22-year-old Scorpio with some minor updates here and there, and people still are buying even though at the same price they can buy a New Generation well-built Scorpio-n (but still their stupid minds go towards the Scorpio Classic).
So clearly there is a big demand for these iconic old-school SUVs with a big legacy among the Indian audience, so Tata has some big potential unutilized by not launching a revamped version of their Safari Storme with more features, Power, Safety, and luxury.
2024 Tata Safari Storme Classic
To make a new updated version of the Tata Safari Storme, Tata should not touch the body lines, overall shape, and appeal of the vehicle but should try to play with the small bits here and there to considerably modernize their SUV.
At the front Tata can make subtle changes with new revamped LED Headlights with big high-beam and wide-beam functions and Tata can even go with the split light treatment where the high beam and wide beam will be placed at the lower parts of the bumper, and a new bigger grill with similar indents to those found on the new Generation Harrier and Safari.
On the side, Tata need not change much and keep the iconic design language unchanged, but can go with a newer set of 18-inch dual tone alloys which will sharpen the looks of the vehicle and make it more advanced, and the fewer changes the better it would feel.
At the back, Tata needs to keep the same upright looks but with newer LED Taillights, better more advanced-looking bumpers and that’s it, that's all we need.
On the inside the Tata Safari Storme had a decent interior but is not up to 2024 marks, so Tata can move forward by updating the interiors by placing a new Dashboard with better looks, fewer controls, and a big 10-inch screen at the center. A new instrument cluster with more information and visuals to make the driving experience better.
2024 Tata Safari Classic Price
Before getting discontinued in 2019, Tata Safari was on sale for ₹ 10-97-16.35 Lakhs Ex-showroom India (pretty high for that time). So if the Tata Safari Stome makes a comeback expect prices between Rs 12-18 Lakhs Ex-showroom India.

- Tata Nano and Safari Storme bid adieu as BS6 norms come into effect
- The Safari brand was introduced more than 20 years ago
With the BS6 norms coming into effect from 1 April, multiple manufacturers have discontinued products across the line-up. The latest addition to this list is from Tata Motors, who has discontinued the Safari Storme and Nano in India.
The Tata Nano was discontinued as the model received poor sales response while another factor was the cost to upgrade the model to comply with the new crash test norms. The model was powered by a 624cc, twin cylinder petrol engine that produced 38bhp and 51Nm of torque. This engine was offered with a four-speed manual transmission and an AMT unit, sending power to the rear wheels.
The Tata Safari Storme was the last update to the legendary Safari brand that made its debut over 20 years ago. The Safari Storme was powered by a 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine that produced 154bhp and 400Nm of torque. This engine was paired to a six-speed manual transmission. A 4x4 system with electronic Shift on-fly was also offered with the model.
