Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film release in India has been a long time in the making

By Sanjana Nair

Back in 2012, when I first heard Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story’ on 9xO for the first time, I was blown away. As a diehard romantic aged 12, the song made me believe that there really was someone out there who would fight the world to be with me, the way Romeo did for Juliet. It wasn’t long before Swift’s music took over my iPod. I’d spend hours and hours screaming her songs out in my room and hoping that life would someday feel as dreamy as her music videos did.

For many of my classmates too, ‘Love Story’ was the first Taylor Swift song they listened to. As young girls on the cusp of adulthood in India , its premise resonated with us all too well : growing up with strict parents, we became accustomed to their disapproval of the slightest interest in amorous relationships. Of course, our parents would object. Of course, my partner and I would convince them anyway. Swift’s Fearless fed into the sweet teenage fantasy that a perfect love conquers all. Starry-eyed as she sang about boys she had fallen for—boys she had kissed and had crushes on, boys who often ended up hurting her—Swift helped me and many other teens in India escape the restrictive world we lived in , where any implication of romance was seen as bad.

This rose-coloured narrative surrounding the singer began to shift in 2017, with the release of reputation. In her sixth studio album , Swift did not want to be perfect anymore: she was fierce, introspective and lustful; she was unapologetically sexy and feminine. Six years later, my younger sister still remembers how she felt when she listened to the album for the first time. “It’s such a powerful female narrative. All your life, you’re asked to tone down your girliness, and then you see someone embrace it, along with all the heartbreak that came their way—and also make money off of it. That’s powerful.”

Sadly, despite thousands of Indian fans begging her to perform in the country , the singer has never visited, and only alluded to India once in the song ‘seven’: “We’ll move to India forever,” she promises her lover. The Indian theatrical release of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film on November 3 has therefore been a long time in the making as Swifties have tearfully clamoured for the singer-songwriter to acknowledge her legion of fans in India. Ritu Bhoite and Priyanka Shirsath, who founded Swiftie Night India —evenings designed for Taylor Swift fans to come together and celebrate her music as a community—are thrilled about the upcoming release. “This is the closest we have come to experiencing a Taylor Swift concert in India. Many fans here have waited over ten years to see her live.” Started in December 2021, Swiftie Night has now hosted events across multiple cities, with tickets selling out within hours of release—a testament to Swift’s passionate fanbase in India.

What is it about Swift that draws Indians to her in hoards? Maria Jose Kurian, a clinical psychology student, shares, “Her songs are not just fun, they also make people feel seen. She writes about friendships and falling in love, which helps us hope we have that passion for somebody or something .” Bhoite and Shirsath echo this sentiment. “She has always written songs based on real-life experiences and feelings, which makes us feel a lot closer to her.”

As young Indian women finding their place in society, they are also impressed by how Swift refuses to back down. A woman in a male-dominated industry , the singer-songwriter has let any hatred only fuel her career and spoken up repeatedly against the media’s sexist portrayal of her. In a culture that teaches us to distance ourselves from all things feminine in order to be taken seriously, Swift is not ashamed of her femininity and the enormity of her emotions and knows these qualities can coexist with being assertive and strong. Her fanbase plays a huge role in her confidence, and she frequently finds newer, more interesting ways to engage with them on a personal level. Kurian elaborates, “You see her watching TikToks and Tumblr posts, reacting to fan theories, donating to fans in tough times like Covid. I love that she’s so passionate and grateful even after 15 years in the music industry .”

Taylor Swift is why a younger version of me learned to embrace, reinvent and accept herself. As she switched genres from country pop to electronic, rock and hip-hop, I saw myself grow more rebellious, loving and comfortable with my evolving notions of femininity. Ishita Anand, a UI/UX designer, sums it up perfectly when she says, “You sing her songs as passionately at 23 as you did when you were 11.” Whether it’s a heartbreak, new love, a situationship , a friendship breaking up or scream-singing her song after a successful day at work (we’re looking at you, Richie Jerimovich), Taylor’s got you.

Taylor Swift's Indian fans take over theatres as The Eras Tour releases, internet compares frenzy to Salman, SRK films

As the eras tour released in indian cinemas on friday, swifties across the country danced, sang, and hooted along with the popstar..

Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour won't premiere on streaming anytime soon

Swifties take over theatres

Several Swifties took to X on Friday and Saturday to share videos of their fellows dancing, singing, and hooting to Taylor's songs during the screenings of The Eras Tour in different cities of India as the film released two weeks after its record-breaking North American release.

A user shared a video in which Swifties are wearing glow bands and recording the moment on their phones while singing along to Taylor's song Willow.

Another video shows Swifties dancing excitedly not only at their seats but also in the space in front of the screen on Taylor's You Belong With Me.

Another video shows a montage of Taylor's performance of various hits from the film, as Swifties in the hall sing along and cheer loudly. The user wrote in the caption, “Since Taylor isn’t bringing the eras tour to India, we brought the tour to the eras movie first day first show.” Here are some more videos from the opening day in India:

Internet compares it to Shah Rukh, Salman frenzy

One user reposted a video of Swifties taking over a show of The Eras Tour in India and called Taylor “basically ladkiyon ki Sallu bhai” (The female version of Salman Khan), comparing the frenzy in the theatre to when a Salman Khan film releases in say, Gaiety Galaxy, Mumbai on Eid.

HT's Soumya Srivastava rated the craze she saw in the theatre even above that of a Shah Rukh Khan film.

About The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour released in the US theatres last month and became the highest-opening concert film of all time after beating Justin Bieber : Never Say Never (2011). It earned $97 million across North America during its opening weekend. It is compiled from Taylor’s summer shows at Southern California’s SoFi Stadium. Taylor, who produced the film, went around the Hollywood studio system to distribute the film, making a deal directly with AMC, the largest exhibition company in the US. The pop star recently also released a new album, 1989 (Taylor's Version), which became the most streamed album on Spotify in a day, allowing her to break her own record of Midnights (2021).

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Movie Will Screen In India & We’re Like, It’s Been A Long Time Comin’

Days after the release of her ‘ Midnights ‘ album, Taylor Swift announced her sixth concert world tour titled ‘ The Eras Tour ‘, describing it as a journey through the musical eras of her career spanning 19 enchanting  years.

Along with the announcement, Swift also revealed the dates for the first leg of the tour in the States and promised the international dates would be out soon.

The tour commenced on March 18 in Glendale, Arizona, and soon became one of the most iconic tours of all time, witnessing unprecedented demand while elevating the US economy and leaving a manifold cultural impact. In the US alone, it was  estimated that the tour would surpass the billion mark .

As the US Swifties dressed in ensembles and relished the night in sold-out stadiums, Taylor Swift fans worldwide drew solace in the viral concert videos and manifested for Swift to tour in their country.

For us, the Indian Swifties, we hoped and hoped like we’d never hoped before. You see, we knew Swift had never toured in India previously. And call us DELULU, but ‘MOTHER’ spoke to us through one of her songs in  Folklore , ‘ seven ‘. She said she’ll move to India forever, and we were thinking it may be an Easter Egg for debuting in India, because you know, there is no one like T Swift when it comes to dropping cryptic cues.

Imagine if Taylor came to India on the Eras tour and performed Seven as the surprise song!!!!! I swear I'd pass out! It'd be one of the happiest moments of my life 😍 #TSTheErasTour #TaylorSwift pic.twitter.com/gaBkZlJ705 — Shirley (@jshirley95) March 20, 2023

Our dreams were shattered for the first time when she sang ‘ seven ‘ as one of her surprise songs in Pittsburgh. And then they were completely crushed when she announced the international dates, which had no mention of India.

We had barely begun to make peace with it when Swift made a really clever and wise business move known as ‘ The Eras Tour Movie’  for theatres in North America.

But WAIT, the movie is no more for the US alone, and, as per Swift’s latest announcement, will be screening worldwide. Among the list of over 100 countries revealed on her website on Tuesday, there is — for the love of everything that’s good and pure — INDIA.

However, for India and some other countries, the movie will start screening from November 3. Unsurprisingly, Indian Swifties are over the moon and saturn.

are you gonna believe when I say that.. just today I was talking to my mom about the movie being released only in America,,,and I told her i could never have that experience,,,…but we will…we finally will😩😩😭✨️✨️💓💓💥 https://t.co/k9Tfq2pgcj — india(taylor's version) (@TaylorSwift0510) September 26, 2023

Taylor Swift, a name synonymous with blockbuster entertainment, is making waves in India with her concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” The advance booking for this highly anticipated film has seen an impressive response, with 25,000 tickets already sold for its opening day.

Known as one of the most influential figures in the world of entertainment, Taylor Swift’s star power is on full display as her concert film enjoys a promising start in the Indian box office. “The Eras Tour Concert” is creating a buzz with reports of sold-out shows, positioning it as one of the highest-grossing music tours in concert history.

Despite being a modestly budgeted project, Taylor Swift’s concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” made a remarkable impact in North America last month. During its opening weekend, the film grossed over USD 90 million, and its success has only continued to climb. To date, it has exceeded the impressive milestone of USD 150 million in North America and a staggering USD 200 million worldwide.

As the film gears up for its Indian release on November 3, 2023, it’s expected to set new records, potentially outgrossing all other films in its path. Even with the arrival of new releases like “The LadyKiller” and “Aankh Micholi,” Taylor Swift’s “Miss Americana” is not facing any immediate threats. While “12th Fail” could pose a challenge, it’s still too early to predict the outcome.

Taylor Swift has undoubtedly established herself as a formidable force at the box office, showcasing her influence and popularity across the globe.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” the concert film, will be available for viewing in select Indian theaters starting November 3, 2023. Directed by Sam Wrench, this 2023 American concert film offers an exclusive look at the “Eras Tour,” a series of concerts held by Taylor Swift in 2023-2024 in support of her extensive discography.

What sets this release apart is Taylor Swift’s innovative distribution strategy. When negotiations with major film studios fell through, she took the unconventional route by partnering with AMC Theatres and Cinemark Theatres. This unique move generated considerable interest and discussion within the entertainment industry.

They shot the film during August 2023 at three performances held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with a budget ranging from $10 million to $20 million. Notably, the production continued despite the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, marking it as a significant achievement.

Taylor Swift’s announcement of “The Eras Tour” took the studios by surprise and prompted several other films with release dates near October 13 to shift their schedules. This bold approach in releasing the film directly through theaters, bypassing the traditional producer-distributor-exhibitor model, garnered praise from journalists and industry experts, highlighting Taylor Swift’s ability to challenge conventions and shape the future of entertainment distribution.

‘This Is Extraordinary’: Why The Eras Tour Is Taylor Swift’s Greatest Live Triumph Yet

For three straight nights she turned a packed New Jersey stadium into a sea of joy, sobs, and communion

' src=

“Jersey, welcome to the Eras Tour!” Taylor Swift yelled on Friday night. “There is one thing that I daydream about with the childlike enthusiasm of a hundred birthday parties, and that is MetLife Stadium Night 1.” That gets the mood about right. She spent this weekend at her long-awaited MetLife Stadium shows in New Jersey, destroying the hearts and lungs of 83,000 of the planet’s most godforsaken messes. All three shows were chaotic jubilation, full of songs we’ve waited years to sing. And Taylor missed this more than any of us.

Taylor Swift keeps building the legend of her Eras Tour, week after week, city by city, making every night so much longer, wilder, louder, more jubilant than it has to be.   There’s nothing in history to compare. This is her best tour ever, by an absurd margin. It’s a journey through her past, starring all the different Taylors she’s ever been, which means all the Taylors that  you’ve  ever been. Taylor always designs every tour to be the best night of your life. But she designed this one to be the best night of  all  your lives. Every Era you’ve ever lived through, it’s in here. She does 46 songs, plus snippets of a few more. That means this show has 22 percent of her songbook, and don’t even imagine she didn’t plan it that way.

This weekend I spent three consecutive nights at these shows, singing and weeping and suffering and agonizing through an emotional epic Tay-pocalypse every night. But it feels brutal that it’s over so soon. Nobody wanted it to stop. Not even Taylor, who paused on Sunday night at her piano during “Champagne Problems” to rave, “If you think I’m just coasting along thinking this is normal, I can assure you this is not the case. This is extraordinary.”

taylor swift eras tour india

No matter how many Taylor tours you’ve seen before, there’s something extra about the joy, the craving, the ecstatic release that people bring to this one. She’s had six Number One albums since her 2018  Reputation  tour, and we’ve got some serious overfeeling to catch up on.   The woman behind me who responded to the intro of “All Too Well” by dropping on her knees and spending the entire 10 minutes sobbing in a fetal position, you are my goddamn hero.

The communal vibe is always intense at a Swift show, but never more than at this one. I was in the Night 1 parking lot about 10 minutes before someone I’d never met gave me a BETTY’S CARDIGAN friendship bracelet that I’m still wearing right now. I brought extra packs of pocket tissues, which came in handy when the  Fearless  interlude inspired a few meltdowns in my row Sunday night. When Taylor began the  Evermore  section into “Tis The Damn Season,” the security guy came over and said, “You the guy with the tissues?” Another couple of fans were having tear-duct emergencies, sobbing to me, “I really love this album!” ONLY at a Taylor show.

The sheer bombardment of genius songs was physically overwhelming — there was a shock that went the crowd all three nights, as she went from the  Phoebe Bridgers  duet “Nothing New” to the show-stopping ten-minute “All Too Well,” with people ready to be carried out on a stretcher, only to realize  We’re barely halfway through . It’s two hours into the show, but she’s not close to finished with the crowd. Taylor, what are you even doing to us right now? You know you won so what’s the point in keeping score?

taylor swift eras tour india

One of the central paradoxes of Taylor Swift — and this woman is nothing BUT paradoxes — is how she writes songs about the tiniest, most secretive agonies, the kind you wouldn’t even confess to your friends, except the only way she knows how to process these moments is turning them into louder-than-life stadium scream-alongs. It is so weird to sing “My Tears Ricochet” in a stadium with 80,000 people, with Taylor swirling in a goth-priestess gown, leading a funeral procession of black-hooded mourners. For most of us,  Folklore  and  Evermore  are albums we learned to sing along with by ourselves, at a moment of quarantine, fear, and isolation. Hearing other voices sing these songs with us completely changes how they feel. The moment when Taylor gets to the almost-hidden line “when I’m screaming at the sky”—and she really does scream it at the sky—was cathartic on a level that’s totally new for a Taylor show.

Over the show, she celebrates every part of her career, except her 2006 country debut, which surprisingly doesn’t even make a token appearance, though she’s done some of the songs as acoustic one-offs. (There’s no other career where such a  great debut  could turn out to be Not Era Enough.) Some of the eras turned into full-blown dance parties, like  1989 ,  Reputation , and  Midnights .  Fearless  was the one era where she flashed her early twangy side — she made such a statement by stepping out on the catwalk after the first verse for a triumphant power twirl. It was pandemonium when she introduced “You Belong With Me” and “Love Story” by asking, “Jersey, are you ready to go back to high school with me?”

Daringly, she kept  Speak Now  to just one song, maybe figuring that we’re all about to get a massive feast when she drops  Speak Now  ( Taylor’s Version)  on July 7. But what a song — “Enchanted” was the only song she needed for that era, the one that sums up all the glorious emotional excess in her songwriting that really caught fire on this album. She sang “Enchanted” in a princess gown (new for these shows) that captured the wonderstruck sparkle of the song.

taylor swift eras tour india

By the time she got to the  Folklore  era, it was already a few hours into the show, but her emotional brutality never let up—honestly, the worst thing that she ever did was what she did to us. She sang “The One” on the roof of a mossy cottage — the line that blows up into a real audience screamer is “You meet some woman on the internet and  taaaaake  her  hooome .” She did just the peak of “Illicit Affairs,” the “don’t call me kid” chant—a song about sordid meetings in parking lots hit hard coming an hour after “Fearless,” a very different song about a couple in a parking lot, but maybe the same girl a few years down the line. So many of the songs felt extra cathartic live, since virtually all of us in the crowd learned to sing these songs in a moment of extreme solitude and isolation. She did “Betty,” “Cardigan,” “My Tears Ricochet,” and the unstoppable “August,” pouncing on that final “get in the car!” Also, it wouldn’t be Tay’s style to forget that MetLife Stadium is literally  behind a mall .

She slips acoustic surprise songs into the set list every night, one on guitar and one alone with her piano. On Friday night, she did “Getaway Car” (with Jersey boy Jack Antonoff) and “Maroon.” Satuday it was a pair of New York love songs, “Holy Ground” and “False God.” But the peaks were Sunday night, when she did a stripped-down “Welcome to New York,” leaning hard on the line that people chose to overlook in 2014—“You can want who you want/Boys and boys and girls and girls.” Then she did a devastating “Clean” on piano. Her enthusiasm spilled over with quips like “You guys always give 113 per cent” or “You will get a treat for that!” Early on Friday night, she declared, “You guys are historically a great crowd. Do you think that you want to continue that tradition?” When the fans roared, she replied, “I was hoping you would say that. In case you said no, I was going to just ditch this plan completely.

Evermore  really loomed large—it might be the most Era of the Eras, the one that transforms most in a live setting. It’s startling how her moodiest, most introspective songs translate as stadium bangers, from the U2 guitar pulse of “’Tis The Damn Season” to the heartache of “Champagne Problems.” “Willow” became a goth ritual — the fans next to me said, “This is where she has a seance.” “Marjorie” had Taylor singing along with the voice of her late grandmother Marjorie Finlay—almost exactly 20 years to the day after she passed away. “She would have loved to sing at MetLife Stadium,” Taylor said on Sunday night. “I guess technically, she just did.”

taylor swift eras tour india

“All Too Well (Ten Minute Version)” was the coup de grace, filling up the enormous space with the sound of just Taylor and her thousands of confidantes. It couldn’t help but evoke the moment when she sang it the first time she played MetLife Stadium — ten summers ago, in July 2013. That night, it already seemed incredibly to think of how far she’d come so fast. But ten years later, hearing “All Too Well” on that same stage, it seemed to sum up everywhere she’s traveled in those past ten years. Like the rest of the Eras Tour, it was a celebration of all the holy ground she and her audience has covered.

Phoebe Bridgers played all three nights with a fantastic guitar-hero set—what a kick to see “Kyoto” and “Garden Song” take on their rightful grandeur as stadium bangers. These were her final  Eras  shows, and unsurprisingly, she and Taylor got sentimental about it. When she came out on Sunday to duet on “Nothing New,” Phoebe confessed, “You are my hero,” making Taylor groan, “What are you  doing  right now?” Tay told her her, “Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for making the best music ever.” Then she apologized to the crowd. “Sorry you had to see that. It was like the last day of summer camp for us.” (We’re Taylor fans. We’re used to seeing “that,” whatever “that” happens to be at the moment.) Taylor also lavished love on her openers  Gayle, Gracie Abrams, and her “Lover” video co-star Owenn. She also went onstage to a brilliant old-school feminist anthem: Lesley Gore’s 1963 classic “You Don’t Own Me,” a song Taylor could have written.”

She ended all three nights with a very special guest: Ice Spice doing her guest verse on “Karma.” Friday night she debuted their “Karma” video during the show, sitting on the stage with her dancers to view it on the screen along with the crowd. “Karma” was a high note to end on, but the amazing thing about the Eras Tour is that it’s so forward-facing, a complex pop history that’s so rich and deep and multilayered, but one that’s still being rewritten right before our eyes, week after week. And there’s no doubt this mastermind is at the absolute peak of her creative powers, after 17 fairly relentless years. This show makes an excellent case that in so many ways, Taylor Swift’s era is really just beginning. (And oh yeah — over the weekend she also released a new song with the hook, “I wouldn’t marry me either.” Yeah, she’s got a lot going on at the moment.)

At one point on Sunday night, during the  Midnights  finale, I heard voices and thought the security guard near me was arguing with a fan. It turned out they were just trading friendship bracelets. It’s THAT kind of show. That’s the world this woman and only this woman creates, on an epic scale, night after night. There’s no experience in music like being part of that world Taylor Swift creates for a few hours. And there’s no way not to feel joyful about taking it all with you when you leave.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Movie Hits Indian Screens – A Long-Awaited Spectacle!

Following the recent release of her highly anticipated album, “Midnights,” Taylor Swift has unveiled exciting news for her global fanbase. Swift has officially announced her sixth concert world tour, aptly named “The Eras Tour.” This tour promises to be a remarkable journey through the musical chapters of her illustrious career, spanning an impressive 19 years.

In addition to the thrilling announcement of “The Eras Tour,” Taylor Swift has graciously shared the eagerly awaited dates for the tour’s first leg in the United States. As fans around the world eagerly anticipate the opportunity to experience Swift’s musical journey in person, these initial tour dates in the States mark the beginning of what promises to be a spectacular global tour.

“The Eras Tour” kicked off its remarkable journey on March 18 in Glendale, Arizona, marking the beginning of what would soon become an iconic and historic tour. This tour quickly earned its place among the most revered and legendary concert series of all time, achieving unparalleled levels of demand and making a profound impact on both the cultural landscape and the U.S. economy.

The tour’s overwhelming popularity and fervent fan support resulted in unprecedented demand for tickets and merchandise. Swift’s ability to connect with audiences through her music and performances led to sold-out arenas and stadiums across the United States. Fans from all walks of life came together to experience the magic of “The Eras Tour,” creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration.

While enthusiastic Swifties in the United States adorned themselves in striking ensembles and reveled in unforgettable nights within the confines of sold-out stadiums, Taylor Swift’s dedicated global fanbase found solace in the digital age. Fans across the world, unable to attend the tour in person, turned to viral concert videos, live streams, and social media to share in the magic of “The Eras Tour.”

For Indian Swifties, hope and anticipation reached levels they had never experienced before. The reason was simple but profound: Taylor Swift had never embarked on a tour in India before. In the world of Swift fandom, where deciphering clues and hidden messages is a beloved pastime, the lyrics of one of her songs from the “Folklore” album, specifically “seven,” sparked excitement and speculation.

In the song “seven,” there’s a line that speaks of moving to India forever, and for Indian Swifties, this lyric held a special significance. They couldn’t help but wonder if it might be a cryptic cue, an Easter Egg, as Taylor Swift is known for embedding hidden messages and hints in her music and public appearances.

The rollercoaster of emotions experienced by Indian Swifties took a heartbreaking turn when Taylor Swift performed “seven” as one of her surprise songs in Pittsburgh during the tour. This moment likely raised hopes of an India tour among fans, only to see those hopes dashed as the international tour dates were announced, with no mention of India on the list.

Just when the disappointment of not having an India tour seemed difficult to bear, Taylor Swift made a strategic and ingenious business move that offered solace and excitement to fans around the world. This move, known as ‘The Eras Tour Movie,’ was specifically tailored for theaters in North America.

In a thrilling turn of events, Taylor Swift has extended her generosity and inclusivity to her global fanbase by expanding the screening of ‘The Eras Tour Movie’ beyond the United States. In her latest announcement, Swift has shared the exhilarating news that the movie will now be screened worldwide, and among the list of over 100 countries included, there is, for fans in India, the long-awaited inclusion of their beloved country.

The tour isn’t the only thing we’re taking worldwide…….. 🌎 Been so excited to tell you all that The Eras Tour concert film is now officially coming to theaters WORLDWIDE on Oct 13! The news that ‘The Eras Tour Movie’ will start screening in India and several other countries from November 3 has sent Indian Swifties into a state of pure elation and excitement. This long-awaited announcement has been met with immense enthusiasm, with fans in India and beyond eagerly anticipating the chance to finally experience Taylor Swift’s tour on the big screen.

The phrase “over the moon and Saturn” aptly captures the sheer delight and euphoria that Swifties in India are feeling. The wait has been worth it, and the anticipation has only heightened the joy of knowing that Taylor Swift’s cinematic tour experience is just around the corner.

Taylor Swift's Eras tour could generate over $2 billion from just ticket sales

As the first tour to break the $1 billion mark in gross ticket sales, Taylor Swift's "Eras" Tour has established a new standard in the music industry. A live-music trade magazine called Pollstar estimates that the tour brought in $1.04 billion just from ticket sales. Between November 17, 2022, and November 15, 2023, 60 gigs and almost 4.35 million tickets were sold, making this historic accomplishment possible.

In addition to selling a lot of tickets, the "Eras" Tour generated a sizable amount of cash from merchandise sales; Pollstar estimates that sales during the same period totaled about $200 million.  Pollstar predicts that ticket sales for the next eligibility box office year may surpass another $1 billion, potentially taking the tour's total to over $2 billion. These are not the only financial forecasts for the tour's success.

Taylor Swift On World Tour But No Concerts In India. Here's Why

Taylor swift's eras tour, currently her most expansive yet, boasts 151 shows across five continents, making it the highest-grossing tour of all time..

Taylor Swift On World Tour But No Concerts In India. Here's Why

Indian fans will have to wait a while longer to witness Taylor Swift in action.

Taylor Swift is regarded as one of the world's most popular singer-songwriters and has a massive fan base in India. Yet when she announced the dates for her global Eras Tour, there were 6 concerts planned in Singapore and none in India. The reason: A deal between the Singapore government and the concert promoter.

The revelation was recently made by Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin who revealed that the concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) told him that Taylor Swift could not perform anywhere in Southeast Asia during the tour.

According to Mr Thavisin, AEG informed him that the Singapore government had secured an exclusive deal with Taylor Swift, offering a substantial sum of $2 million to $3 million per show in exchange for the sole right to host the tour in Southeast Asia.

Swift's Eras Tour, currently her most expansive yet, boasts 151 shows across five continents, making it the highest-grossing tour of all time, surpassing an impressive $1 billion in revenue. With six sold-out shows scheduled at Singapore's National Stadium in March, it seems the island state has strategically positioned itself as the sole Southeast Asian stop for the global pop sensation.

Prime Minister Thavisin expressed disappointment on behalf of Thai fans, highlighting that hosting the concert in Thailand would have been more cost-effective and could have attracted additional sponsors and tourists to the country.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

"The Singapore government is astute," Prime Minister Thavisin remarked, acknowledging the strategic move made by Singapore to secure the high-profile tour. He mentioned that AEG helped him understand why Taylor Swift had not previously performed in Thailand, stating that if he had known earlier, efforts would have been made to bring the Eras Tour to the country.

Indian fans will have to wait a while longer to witness the global pop sensation in action and are currently left with no option but to consider making the journey to Singapore to witness Taylor Swift's iconic performances.

Taylor Swift's Eras is finally coming to India. The movie, not the tour

Dristi Sharma

India soon is set to witness Taylor Swift performing in the theatres nearby. This comes as a ray of good news after thousands of Swifties were disappointed to learn that Taylor Swift wouldn't be bringing her Eras Tour to India.

A month ago, Taylor Swift took to her Instagram and X to announce the news that the Eras tour movie will be released in North America, but later was expanded to other countries.

Now, if you're looking for dates, here's the thing: Even though Taylor's Instagram and everywhere else it says it's October 3, it is only for certain parts of the US and Canada.

However, in countries like India, according to the official website of the Eras Tour,  the screening will begin only after November 3. For countries like Pakistan, Chile, Japan and others, the movie will release October 13 onwards.

Taylor Swift and OpenAI’s Sam Altman join the ranks of freshly minted billionaires

Left: Singer Taylor Swift. Right: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

More than 260 new names have made it onto the list of the world’s billionaires, Forbes has revealed, with both Taylor Swift and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman making an appearance for the first time.

The new rankings also confirmed Tesla CEO Elon Musk once again lags behind luxury goods titan Bernard Arnault in the race to be the richest person on earth.

The 75-year-old French kingpin Arnault, who oversees fashion empire LVMH with a net worth of $233 billion, led the record-breaking pack of 2,781 billionaires—more than ever before.

Moreover, the report found that 14 people are now centibillionaires with 12-figure fortunes.

Who are the world’s richest people?

Behind Arnault and X owner Musk—who has a fortune of $195 billion—are Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ($194 billion), Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg ($177 billion), and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison ($141 billion).

Further down the top 10 are Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett ($133 billion), Microsoft duo Bill Gates ($128 billion) and Steve Ballmer ($121 billion), Asia’s richest person Mukesh Ambani ($116 billion), and Google founder Larry Page ($114 billion).

And while the forerunners are made up of well-known faces, a host of new individuals also made it onto the list.

Swift’s Eras Tour propelled her to a net worth of $1.1 billion, while OpenAI’s CEO Altman also appeared courtesy of $1 billion in wealth.

Altman’s wealth isn’t made up of a stake in the company he runs —he has repeatedly said that he does not own equity in the company.

Rather, much of his traceable wealth is in a web of VC funds and startup investments, which is set to grow with the initial public offering of Reddit , where he’s among the largest shareholders.

The list’s youngest name—and appearing for the first time—is 19-year-old heiress Livia Voigt, who has inherited a $1.1 billion fortune courtesy of stakes in Brazilian wind manufacturer WEG, which was founded by her grandfather.

And despite a reported slowdown in luxury goods sales , fashion designer Christian Louboutin made it into the rankings with a net wealth of $1.2 billion.

America prevailed as home to the world's richest people, boasting a record 813 individuals with a combined wealth of $5.7 trillion.

Coming second: China and Hong Kong, with 473 individuals worth $1.7 trillion.

India ranks third with $954 billion across 200 individuals on the list.

“It’s been an amazing year for the world’s richest people, with more billionaires around the world than ever before,” said Chase Peterson-Withorn, Forbes senior editor, wealth. “Even during times of financial uncertainty for many, the super-rich continue to thrive.”

It's worth noting that Forbes's annual list does differ in its rankings from the likes of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index , which also places Arnault in the number one spot followed by Bezos.

Musk comes in third, followed by Zuckerberg, Gates, and Ballmer—though the net wealth of the majority differs between the two rankings.

How did Taylor Swift make her billion?

Swift, now a 14-time Grammy award winner, has had a stratospheric 12 months courtesy of her global tour which was the first ever to gross more than $1 billion .

Demand for tickets was so high that Ticketmaster experienced a raft of glitches and technical problems , with the fiasco ending in the cancellation of a public sale for the spots.

Fans traveled from far and wide to see the 34-year-old songstress in action, with research firm QuestionPro finding Swift will add a total of $4.6 billion to the U.S. economy courtesy of consumers spending on meals out, merch, and overnight stays.

As well as live shows, Swift also has a massive catalog of music, estimated by Bloomberg to be worth $400 million since 2019 alone.

This includes the re-releases of albums such as Fearless and 1989 , which Swift re-recorded after her masters were sold to music mogul and manager, Scooter Braun.

According to Bloomberg , Swift's earnings from Spotify and YouTube total around $120 million while royalties from music sales rake in another $80 million.

The Pennsylvania-born songwriter and actress also owns property worth a reported $110 million per Bloomberg , with the New York Post listing her assets across a Tribeca townhouse with an attached apartment for security, an eight-bed mansion in Rhode Island, and a penthouse in Nashville.

Also in her portfolio is a four-bedroom Nashville complex with an adjacent guest house, as well as a seven-bedroom home in LA.

Swift is one of a small but powerful group of women on Forbes's rich list .

While women make up just 13% of the world's billionaires, their wealth is growing.

L’Oréal heiress Françoise Bettencourt Meyers's wealth jumped $19 billion since last year's list to $99.5 billion while MacKenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos's ex-wife, is up $11.2 billion from last year to $35.6 billion.

That's despite giving away millions following an "open call" to charities and organizations in need of support.

Swifties pose for a picture at the National Stadium in Singapore during Taylor Swift's Eras tour.

The Taylor Swift gig economy is so big it’s even causing geopolitical tensions

Zing Tsjeng

Singapore reportedly paid the singer £2.4m a show to host her Eras tour, causing dismay in Thailand and the Philippines

C ongratulations are in order for Taylor Swift, who makes her Forbes Rich List debut this year as one of the world’s newly minted billionaires . Not content with inspiring her own branch of economics – Swiftonomics, FYI – the singer is also responsible for causing geopolitical tension in south-east Asia, with her record-busting Eras tour.

The financial value of a Swift gig is of such national importance that Singapore reportedly paid her up to $3m (£2.4m) a show to ensure it was the only place to host Swift on her jaunt to the region this spring, prompting complaints from Thailand and the Philippines. In the words of one Filipino politician: “[It] isn’t what good neighbours do.” If $3m sounds like an awful lot to secure a concert exclusive, that’s small change when you consider the benefits – it’s estimated that her six shows have boosted the Singapore economy by $370m .

Singaporean government ministers aren’t the only ones looking at Swift with dollar signs in their eyes. With the singer en route to Britain this summer, hotels and Airbnb landlords here have hiked their rates accordingly. A Swiftie friend of mine is considering paying £419 for a bed in Edinburgh at the Holiday Inn. Call it dynamic pricing, or just plain old daylight robbery.

Downwardly mobile

A thief taking a smartphone from a man’s back pocket.

I have lost a phone twice in the past month. The first one was yanked out of my hands by a thief on an ebike, and the second – its replacement – has disappeared into the depths of the DPD sorting office without a trace. Unfortunately, stolen mobiles are par for the course in London – two-fifths of robberies here are phone-related, with one snatched almost every six minutes in 2022. The real question is where all these stolen phones are going. According to the Met police officer I spoke to, on a borrowed mobile, lots of them apparently end up in Dubai, where they are sold on to unsuspecting customers. Unfortunately, it seems almost impossible for theft victims like myself to see any kind of justice – within 24 hours of the police looking up the CCTV (or rather, the lack thereof), my case was closed. If it happens to you, the best advice I can give is: get your mobile phone network to blacklist the model’s IMEI number, and render it unusable for the next sucker who tries to get a cheap deal on a stolen phone.

Un-till later

An Amazon Fresh store in London with a sign indicating how to use its Just Walk Out programme.

The Amazon Fresh supermarket in my neighbourhood has always struck me as looking like a badly designed Black Mirror set – all shabby-looking prefab shelving and weirdly glossy produce. Now it turns out that its pièce de résistance is a fiction. Amazon trumpeted its Just Walk Out programme – in which you could scan your phone, load your basket and leave without using a till – as an AI triumph. According to an investigation by the Information , it was actually powered by people – specifically, around 1,000 workers in India who had to review 700 of every 1,000 sales. Amazon claims these workers are used to train its AI model, but somewhat tellingly, has decided to start getting customers to use its self-scan trolleys.

Horror is the hottest trend in publishing, with sales of spooky stories rising by 54% in 2023 and the Bookseller reporting that it was a record-breaking year for the genre, pulling in £7.7m in revenue. Try British novelist Alison Rumfitt, whose chilling works of social horror have seen her compared with Haunting of Hill House author Shirley Jackson .

Girl in Red Is Ready for Her Superstar Era

By Brenna Ehrlich

Brenna Ehrlich

Singer Marie Ulven Ringheim, known as "Girl in Red," in NYC on Feb. 12, 2024.

M arie Ulven is not a chill person. Over the course of lunch at a slick New York spot packed with women in expensive-looking black athleisure, she swings between aping Taylor Swift ’s arm flex on “The Man” from the Eras Tour — a move that Ulven, who opened for a few of those dates last summer, knows all about — and clutching her chest, breathless. “I’m just trying to deal with my anxiety when it comes,” she says. “Right now, my heart really hurts.”

Ulven, 25, has pretty much always taken music seriously — she’s a true workhorse, like those superstars. The Oslo resident started writing songs when she was eight, playing guitar at 14, and has been producing her own music for a decade. After uploading her first song, the sad-and-sweet “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,” to YouTube in 2018, things started moving very fast for the then-teen. She dropped two EPs in 2018 and 2019, followed by her debut album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, in 2021. A poppy therapy session of a record that dealt with everything from macabre intrusive thoughts to the indignity of being a fuck buddy, the LP cemented Ulven’s place in a weird-girl pop canon that includes the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Gayle. She’s relatable, but not cliché.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

In the end, Ulven went back to the studio when she was ready — when she had her fill of experiences to translate into music. “I’m inspired by paper and folders and fonts and light,” she says, crunching into a crouton. “I’m inspired by espressos and traveling and trains. I’m inspired by waiters having etiquette. How he pours wine very nicely and lets you smell it first. I’m inspired by absolutely everything.”

In Our Gifting Era: The Best Gifts for Taylor Swift Fans

Taylor swift starts countdown to ‘the tortured poets department’ with her favorite number, taylor swift soundtracks the five stages of grief with new apple music playlists.

In her classic fashion, the album ping-pongs between highs and lows. Opener “I’m Back” creeps in almost bashfully, with Ulven proclaiming: “I’m back, I feel like myself/I was gone for a minute/’Cause I went to get help.” The switch flips with “Doing It Again Baby,” a bombastic strut of a song, and the first one she wrote for the record after compulsively picking out the melody during soundchecks. “That song is about feeling like I have so much self-esteem that I feel like I’m a cocky-ass bitch walking down the streets with my sunglasses on,” she says.

Still, the bravado isn’t a constant — single “Too Much” is about being just that (her mom was always telling her to quiet down), while tracks like “Phantom Pain” and “Pick Me” remind us that Ulven wasn’t always so lucky in love. Sabrina Carpenter does help her go scorched-earth on an ex, though, on “You Need Me Now.” The two singers both gained big new audiences last year as openers on separate legs of Swift’s Eras Tour, but they’ve been friends since around 2022 — Ulven says they formed a mutual-appreciation society in each other’s DMs before she asked Carpenter to guest on the dark rocker of a track for her new album.

“When she reached out to me, it felt like a no-brainer and I was immediately drawn to the record,” Carpenter says. “It was exciting to make because it pushed me into new sonic territory.”

Ulven is perhaps most herself on the ominous, echoey “Ugly Side,” in which she grapples with feeling like Jeykll and Hyde — torn between being “cute” and “lovable” and “boiling inside.”

The Far Right Is Crawling With Eclipse Conspiracy Theories

Ted cruz is getting nervous he’s going to lose his senate seat, trump lies that it ‘came out’ he won wisconsin during gaffe-filled rally, the wait is over: billie eilish announces new album 'hit me hard and soft', nancy pelosi among 40 house democrats demanding biden halt weapon transfers to israel.

“I have these incredible highs, and then I have these very low lows,” Ulven says as the waiter whisks away our plates. “Maybe that’s good. I don’t want to be just one thing. I don’t want to be just this confident person who never doubts themselves. I think doubt can be great as much as it can be very paralyzing.”

She pauses for a moment. “Yeah. I just need to chill the fuck out.… I think that’s exactly what I need to do.” There’s a first time for everything.

  • Taylor Swift, Magic Johnson, and Sam Altman are among the new additions to Forbes' billionaire list.
  • Swift's "The Eras Tour," Johnson's business deals, and Altman's startup bets have paid off hugely.
  • AMD's Lisa Su, Todd Graves of Raising Cane's, and fashion icon Christian Louboutin made the cut too.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift, Magic Johnson, and Sam Altman are among the 265 new faces on Forbes' annual list of billionaires, published this week.

The full rankings feature a record 2,781 people, worth an unprecedented $14.2 trillion between them as of March 8.

Swift ($1.1 billion) has joined the three-comma club thanks to "The Eras Tour," her ongoing marathon of 152 shows in 54 cities across five continents.

The global concert tour has generated more than $1 billion in revenue, and has been turned into a movie that premiered in AMC Theatres before moving to Disney+.

The singer-songwriter's net worth also reflects the estimated value of her music catalog — which includes hits like "Blank Space" and "Anti-Hero" — and her real estate holdings.

Johnson ($1.2 billion) is best known for leading the Los Angeles Lakers to five championship titles in the 1980s. But the basketball star has made most of his fortune since retiring.

He owns small stakes in the Washington Commanders, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Sparks, and Los Angeles FC. He's also made lucrative investments in Starbucks franchises, movie theaters, and real estate over the years.

Altman ($1 billion) is the CEO of Microsoft-backed OpenAI — the company behind ChatGPT and an artificial-intelligence pioneer.

His inclusion on the rich list is a product of his bets on nascent companies when he was Y Combinator's president ; an early wager on Stripe; a position in Reddit , which went public this month; and a stake in Helion , a nuclear fusion startup.

The wealthiest person to debut this year is Andrea Pignataro ($27.5 billion), the ex-Salomon Brothers bond trader behind ION Group, a financial-software company. His net worth reflects his ION stake plus other assets, including an assortment of high-end villas and hotels in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

That group includes Super Micro Computer CEO Charles Liang ($6.1 billion), Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su ($1.3 billion), Tesla and SpaceX investor Antonio Gracias ($1.1 billion), Nvidia director Harvey Jones ($1 billion), and Giancarlo Devasini ($9.2 billion), who worked as a plastic surgeon before launching crypto giant Tether.
